DESTI N AT I O N Lower Mississippi River Delta

:: TIGERS PASS :: Tigers Pass is a shoot off from the Lower Mississippi River. It is actually considered part of an alluvial plain, created by the regular flooding of the Mississippi and Yazoo rivers over thousands of years. The land is flat and contains some of the most fertile soil in the world, where cypress trees make a home for countless wildlife and fishing habitat. This waterway is where Red and Brown make their living and call it home.

PUBLISHER’S NOTE

“BUMPS” R.I.P. 2011 - 2018 One of our friends passed away earlier this year. Bumps, the English bulldog, so affectionately known to thousands of paddlers across the U.S., succumbed to cancer earlier this year. Before he left for the big animal pasture in the sky, he stole the hearts and gave smiles to so many people across the water with his happy and carefree demeanor and laid back personality. In our Quiver and Wheels feature of back issue V7N3 “The Mini Van with Mini, MAB and Bumps” the canine caught the attention of Van Life paddle readers. Proving a dog’s life on the road was both a way of keeping trips calm for the long hauls across the country and a way of sharing the water with your best human friend(s). A dog of few words, relying more on his actions — primarily on the safety side, this bulldog inspired many others to wear

PFD’s and stressed safety for all pets and pet owners. A much-traveled canine that put in over a thousand miles on the water, his balance and agility combined with a kind sense to other animals and many a manatee, brought sunshine every where he went. Allowing everyone who paddled with him to learn and respect things in the true sense of life — becoming happier, kinder and more soulful. He will truly be missed! Our sympathies to Mr. Bumps and his family and hope you find more peace in canine heaven while teaching the angels how to “doggy paddle.”

DHA GOLD:: These days just about everyone has at least heard of the value of Omega 3 fatty acids for health and longevity and millions of people are supplementing with some form of Omega 3’s from fish oil mostly since it’s the number one supplement sold in the U.S.A.

According to the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) in 2012 18.8 million Americans were supplementing with Omega 3’s from fish oils and a tiny percentage of plant-based or algae sources. This number has increased significantly from 2007 with an increase of approximately 8 million more people using Omega 3’s in 2012. It is a number that continued to rise today in 2018. Projections globally are targeted at about 57 billion dollars in market value by 2025. Apparently many people interested in their health are agreeing that Omega 3’s are a good thing to help them. It’s not a hard idea to get through people’s minds that consuming fish and shellfish has health benefits since we have a love affair with seafood globally. Plant-based sources have been growing in popularity with the rise in plant-based diets. There is a growing concern for the exposure of heavy metals like mercury and radiation elements combined with increasing acidic ocean environments all affecting sea life in general. More people are questioning the safety of seafood these days not to mention the sustainability of the seafood industry as a whole and the environmental pressures this has created with growing demand globally.

biochemical reactions that are involved in both healing and general functioning. Humans evolved along coastal regions and ate a lot of seafood, both fish, and bivalves such as oysters. There is a significant amount of evidence to suggest that it was seafood (DHA) that built the human brain, not protein. DHA, iodine, selenium, copper, and zinc are all potent nutrients for proper brain function.

The science is clear of the benefits for human health; since the 1970’s over 20,000 scientific papers have been published on Omega 3’s, second only to aspirin as the two of the most studied substances. DHA or the technical name (docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) are both Omega 3 fatty acids found in nature. However, DHA is really where the emphasis should be and really what we are highly deficient in (DHA makes up about 80% of the bodies Omega 3’s amount and is received into the cell to perform functions while EPA is not and stays outside of the cell.) In an optimal human body, we should have about three pounds of DHA to insulate and protect the whole nervous system and receive light photons (electrons) from the sun through our eyes and skin receptors. I can’t emphasize how vital this is to human health especially in a modern chemical filled world with non-native EMF radiation and artificial blue light hitting us all day long, which depletes DHA unless of course, you live on a mountaintop or secluded island away from all that exposure!

In recent years Krill Oil has emerged as a better option for DHA as its lower on the food chain than bigger fish as a supply and has a better absorption rate of about 30%, still not optimal, but at least better than traditional fish oil supplements that absorb lower than 30% or less. The plant-based sources like chia, flax, and hemp all force the body to convert them into useable Omega 3. The efficiency isn’t very high, and it burns more energy resources for the conversion — again not the best option for DHA, but those plant sources are still good fiber, minerals, and amino acids.

DHA is a 600 million-year-old compound responsible for allowing animals to perform photosynthesis. It built the photoreceptors in the eyes of ancient organisms. It allowed them to convert photons into electrical current to run the many complex

OTHER BENEFITS: • Helps to regulate blood pressure and prevents hypertension • Balances blood chemistry lipid levels • Balances Omega 3 to Omega 6 ratios • Extremely neuro-protective • Supports nerve cell functioning • Improves memory, cognition, and focus • Helps prevent age-related macular degeneration • Helps protect the eyes from artificial blue light exposure • True support of eye, brain, heart and nervous system health • Increases electron exchange and overall mitochondria function and health

their health level and protect the vital nervous system. This is especially relevant if any mental illness like depression and anxiety has been an issue; same for people looking to protect the whole cardiovascular system. For our paddling community, the good folks at Mito Life have given us a discount code “pure brain food” at checkout when ordering online. The website for ordering: www.mitolife.us As much time as the SUP tribe spends outside on the water, in the sun, this is an incredibly paramount piece to us. We receive the electrical, photonic energy from the sun and convert it to do all the things it does to support health and longevity. It takes about three months to build blood levels and about twelve months to produce tissue levels — being fat soluble not water soluble means it is stored in the brain, heart, eyes, sex glands and nervous system. DHA is the most electrically conductive substance in relation to light on the planet. Think about that with all the time we spend on the water in the sun’s life-giving rays! Here’s to longevity on the water and vibrant health for all! For info on this topic or other health/nutrition topics email Scott Estrada: scott@risesup.com

The best option as of today is pure algae-sourced DHA — precisely how all the krill and fish get their sourcing, so in essence; we can now go directly to the lowest point on the food chain and supply our needs! The reason this is exciting news is that it revolves around the fact that the algae source can be grown and harvested indoors away from toxic exposure to ensure a pure source. I’m my opinion, Mito Life Pure DHA is the optimal source for quality and absorption produced from a wild strain algae that are 50% DHA by weight harvested without toxic chemicals that other sources commonly use. 1000 mg is recommended daily as a minimum, and 2000 mg daily would be for those that want to upgrade

H O W TO TRAINING with Casi Rynkowski

PUSHUP RENEGADE ROW:: Your body was designed to work as a whole unit, just as it does while you are paddling; so why not cross train in the same way. Compound exercises are multi-joint movements that work several muscle groups at the same time. They can be more difficult to perform with correct form but they build more muscle and burn more calories because of the energy required to do them. Core development is a great benefit of compound training. Forcing your core to stabilize while performing a compound exercise builds power better than just about any other exercise. This is important to paddling because your core is a huge part of the power in your stroke.

Ths is an intermediate exercise but can but can be modified and done on your knees if necessary. Choose a weight that will allow you to keep your hips square to the floor while preforming the rowing portion of this exercise.

1

Start in a push-up position holding a dumbbell in each had. Your shoulders should be over your hands, your feet wider than shoulder width and your core nice and tight.

3

Next, push your weight into the balls of your feet, row one arm back while keeping your hips square to the floor and your core nice and tight. Return the weight to the floor.

2

Holding your body in a tight plank position, compete a push up by lowering your body down until your elbows are bent 90 degrees and then push back up to the starting position.

4

Repeat this row with the other arm. One rep equals one push up and rowing on the left and right side. Complete as many reps as you can until failure.

SIDE PLANK VARIATIONS:: FOR GREATER BALANCE AND POWER Our side body muscles are mainly used for lateral flexion of the spine and hiking the hip. When we’re paddling and balancing on our board these muscles engage as we bend slightly to one side in the final stage of our forward stroke and help us balance when we’re rotated over to the side for other strokes. They also contract and release as we alternate pressure on our feet to keep our board stable. They also work when we’re carrying our board by the handle on one side. The two following side stretches will help to lengthen and strengthen for greater range of motion, which leads to enhanced balance and power.

1

2

Start on all fours hands and knees.

Take your left foot out to the side as if it were a kickstand on a bike. Extend your right leg and press the bottom of the right foot, especially the outer edge of the foot into the mat. Extend your right arm up to the sky and gaze up. Then take both shoulders back by squeezing your shoulder blades toward one another.

3

In the next variation take your right arm by your right ear with your fingertips pointed forward. Press the entire sole of the right foot into the mat, especially the outer edge of the right foot and stretch through the right fingertips. Hold for 5 deep and easy breaths and release; switch sides.

SIDE PLANK This pose is a core and side body strengthener. When the hips of the bottom side of the body engage and lift, it becomes a stretch for the topside of the hip. • • • • • • •

26 /SPMagazine / VOL 10Nº1 2O18

Start on all fours hands and knees. Inhale to plank position. Turn onto the outer edge of your right foot and stack the left foot on top of the right. Press your right hand and feet into the mat to lift your hips up toward the sky. Extend your left arm to the sky and gaze up. Take both shoulders back on your back. Hold for five deep and easy breaths, release and switch sides.

OMBRAZ OMBRAZ.COM

Ombra(z): Italian for shade. English for the most comfortable, durable, and ecological specs you’ll ever own. Partners Nikolai and Jensen are grass-roots, a two-man team from Seattle, WA, pioneering fundamental design change in the eyewear industry while tackling environmental concerns with impressive ‘tree-commerce’ initiatives. “We’re fired up to introduce a revolutionary pair of handmade sunglasses that don’t break, won’t fall off, and never cause tenderness on the sides of your noggin. How’s that possible? Side arms — the weakest link in eyewear. It turns out; these comfortable action eyewear sunglasses don’t have side arms. We eliminated frickin’ side arms. Our beautifully handcrafted frames connect directly to an adjustable cord that wraps around your head and keeps your sunnies securely in place. Whether you’re jumping off a boat or getting hit by a car, your Ombraz will always stay on your head. Sounds like something that might look a little goofy? WRONG! A superb product would never sacrifice aesthetics for functionality. Ombraz frames and cord were developed to make you look good, blending the style of the city with the spirit of the outdoors. aesthetics meets athletics technically brilliant, fashion-forward designs they might even change your life.” “I’ve personally taken these Ombraz out in the water and intentionally jumped off my board,” says Eric Haka, our photographer. No matter how many times he’s going over the side, he declares, “The adjustable cord that wraps and holds these glasses in place, prevents me from losing the glasses. I wear them tight enough to have it seated on the bone structure of my face, and I’ve never had them come off.”

30 /SPMagazine / VOL 10Nº1 2O18

Nikolai says, “We have hand-sewn hundreds of pairs of Ombraz and become intimately familiar with our product. We are determined to deliver a highquality pair of sunnies that will improve your eyewear experience.” We were thrilled to find that each frame is handcarved and meticulously hand-filed into its unique shape. Each frame is tumbled in wood-chips to soften the edges. The process proceeds from the cord sewn on, then frames equipped with Zeiss optics, and then hand-polished and quality-checked. “No cord has ever been worn the way we intend. We sorted through hundreds of cords from dozens of manufacturers before realizing we needed to develop a custom cord that was elegant, ultra-comfy, withstood abrasion, and could be adjusted when sweaty or wet. Jensen boasts. Ombraz is here to deliver a positive ecological impact. We call it our shade project. We are committed to planting 20 trees for every pair of sunglasses we sell. We provide you with comfy shades, and you help create shade for degraded ecosystems.” Ombraz plants their trees through Eden Reforestation Projects, a nonprofit that employ local farmers in Madagascar, Indonesia, Nepal and Haiti to plant and protect native trees. When you buy a pair of Ombraz, they donate a portion of the proceeds to enable Eden’s reforestation efforts. Not only does their shade project make Ombraz carbon negative

— meaning they sequester more carbon than they emit to produce and deliver a pair of Ombraz to your doorstep, it also provides economic opportunities to indigenous communities. “Trees sequester carbon in the atmosphere. By planting 20 trees, we are sequestering nearly 3X the amount of carbon that is emitted to produce and deliver a pair of Ombraz to your doorstep, making Ombraz a tree-mendously carbon-negative product. None of this would be possible without your help. As Ombraz grows, so does our impact. Let’s plant some trees!”

YOLO is a time-tested leader in delivering the highest quality products to transport their Tribe members on their next adventure. They’ve applied their same hands-on manufacturing expertise, which they’re famous for with paddleboards and other gear. Quality craftsmanship was essential in designing this sturdy and rugged, yet stylish fat-tire electric bike. Electric bikes were built to transport you to new places you may have once thought were out of reach. You’ll bike farther, climb higher and journey longer. High-end components and striking design combine style and performance to empower your next adventure. You Only Live Once — enjoy the ride! Just like their beach cruisers, the YOLO Bolt is built to last with a rustproof aluminum alloy frame. Whether you are pedaling through

mountain terrain, around tranquil lakes, or along ocean landscapes, the Bolt won’t care and neither will you because it is built to assist you when pedaling. The 48-volt battery is standard. It allows for a longer-lasting charge which makes it possible for you to travel distances up to 75 miles, while the 500-watt motor provides serious acceleration when you feel the need for speed — peaking around 28 m.p.h. Hydraulic front and rear disc brakes offer the extra advantage of a cut-off switch, which immediately suspends power to the motor, and before the brakes engage. To break it down — the cut-off switch provides riders the ability to bomb into gnarly areas and controls the Bolt’s exceptional power, by pausing their pedaling which suspends the electric assist, or by what is essentially a hand clutch

YOLO BOLT that cuts power even quicker. Twenty-six inch by 4.0” tires roll over everything — and much better than narrower treads. With an actual total diameter that’s close to a 29ner, the CST tires (parent company of Maxxis) add to an all-around great ride, no matter where you choose to go.

34 /SPMagazine / VOL 10Nº1 2O18

Their display screen is both durable and easy to operate. The Bolt’s battery is not just attached to the frame; it’s built to streamline to the frame. The internal frame routing of the cables is another functionally aesthetic design enhancement that keeps the bike looking sleek and protects your control systems. With top of the line Shimano components allowing for smooth shifting and resist miscues while all-terrain riding. You’ll find comfort in the saddle as it provides an excellent base, offering a supportive seat and additional shock absorption, while still allowing the rider maximum mobility. You pedal — YOLO Bolt powers! A Bolt of adrenaline with every pedal!

and take pictures of friends. I had such an enjoyable time that first year, I committed myself to come back and race on my unlimited sup. I’m not an elite racer, but I love the sport. This race allows me to return each year to compete against myself and improve my time. Each year I bring some new improvement, whether it’s my equipment, conditioning, or technique.” One of California’s elite women paddlers Shae Foudy adds, “I always come out for this event because it is just a fun, well-run event! I’ve been doing it since I began paddling. I don’t go into it with any stress or pressure, so it definitely is not a serious race for me, but like any other event I paddle my hardest. It is nice because I can see where I am at with my training and gauge out what I need to be doing differently!” Bob Long, the owner of West Coast Paddleboards, who also is involved with their own SUNDAY, SUNDAY, SUNDAY race series in San Diego along with his own Turkey Paddle Race, says this, “It’s a terrific kickoff to the new season, a time to reconnect with the paddling community. It is also an affordable event, so the value one gets from this, and the raffles are well worth it. Where else do you have a chance to win a HUKI OC canoe for a raffle ticket? For our San Diego retail outlet, it is tremendous exposure to local as well as outside paddlers. It gives our store a chance to get in front of potential customers who may not know where to get the good stuff.” Coming down from San Clemente every year, one of California’s premier paddlers, Rob Rojas shares, “Why do I go to Hanohano every year? Because it is a lowkey, family-oriented event that has extremely reasonable entry fees and they recognizes and allows all kinds of watercraft. Most importantly it’s seeing friends, and getting a jump on the year! I’m always checking out different board designs to see what the new trends are out of sheer interest. I’m not a shaper, and I don’t work in the

industry, but it’s cool to see what the different brands are doing. I’ve seen several design concepts come then go then reappear over the years. Of course, the raffle is top notch — you can win boards and an OC as well. And getting out there and racing is a big part of the event if you survive the chaotic start, but hey, the start line at the Hanohano is part of the character of the event! See you next year!” Dan Van Dyck adds, “I’d also like to thank this year’s major support from the sponsors who look forward to being part of this every year — Jude Turczynski from Huki Outrigger Canoes who donated the big OC-1 raffle prize every year, Greg Renna of Paddle Planet from Leucadia, Austin Cox of Isle

SUP, Surf in San Diego and of course the support from our Hanohano Outrigger Canoe Club for which this would never have happened.” Our magazine observer, Eric Haka flew over from Hawaii to check the event said in closing, “I believe more of these kind of events are needed all across the United States — it is the consumers who are the backbone of supporting the industry. Ninety-eight percent of people paddle recreationally, and this race is all about having fun, all about meeting new people and seeing everyone smiling on the water for a minimal entry fee. It gave me a sense of stoke, and I felt as though I was one with this good vibe tribe. Wait — I know I was!”

VENICE LOUISIANA... yeah, I know... until a few years ago I had never heard of it either. A friend of mine a told me stories of visiting there and seeing redfish schools as big as football fields, giant pelicans and people who didn’t much like “outsiders.” Ever since then it has been just out of reach — until now. Assignment: Pick up friend and film maker “Cavin Brothers” from the airport in New Orleans, get on Highway 23, and go till you can’t go any further. There you will meet up with Red and Brown Frenette. On the drive down it was rainy and dismal. I love that shit and so does Cavin. I think we stopped every ten minutes the whole way. I was geeking out on all the old buildings, rough looking people, and flames shooting into the air from all the refineries. Did I mention the FLAMES?! If “Jurassic Park” and “Mad Max” had a love child it would be Venice. I have never seen so much wildlife. You feel like you are part of the food chain. You feel alive. My first impression of the Frenette family is that they loved each other a lot and so did the community surrounding them. I think it is safe to say they are legendary in that area. Over the next couple days we immersed ourselves into the lives of Red and Brown and the way of life for their family and the small group of people living this wild existence. I could write a book about my three-day experience in this special place. There is a reason that there are not many people living there. It is rough around the edges to put it mildly, but paradise for some.

THE DRIVE DOWN LA 23 IS A GRITTY VIBE

— an adequate description for the stretch of highway connecting Gretna into Venice. Between Belle Chasse and Venice, the highway serves as the primary road along the west bank of the Mississippi River. In Belle Chasse, the highway crosses the Gulf Intra-coastal Waterway via two antiquated crossings — southbound traffic uses the 1955-vintage Belle Chasse Tunnel, a narrow passage that does not allow passing; northbound traffic uses the 1967-vintage Judge Perez Bridge, a vertical-lift bridge.

The Glide series, manufactured using our bamboo technology, is eye-catchingly colourful and its performance is every bit as good as its looks. This SUP’s excellent glide, combined with its superb stability, delivers smooth performance, allowing you to enjoy long excursions on calm seas and flat water, or more ambitious overnight trips. The 12’6 x 29’’ x 280 L is aimed at medium to heavy weight riders (up to 95kg) and gives impressive stability. The flat section under foot has been extended forward towards the nose to improve stability while a lower profile-piercing nose increases efficiency by smoothly parting the water on entry. A squared off ‘chisel’ shaped tail reduces drag, while the standing area was revised to more efficiently shed water. Deck attachment points make it easy to secure extra gear for extended trips. Starting price at: $1599.95

Short for ‘Rocket Ship’ the RS Series is proving to be one of fastest all-water race boards in the world. We have developed and tested these shapes starting at Pacific Paddle Games 2016 and have made countless prototypes, refining and honing perfect design characteristics. In 2017 all the R&D culminated into final prototypes that would be put to the test in technical, long distance, sprint, and downwind races in order to validate that the RS is one of the fastest, most well-rounded, all water race boards in the world. This board has been a top finisher against the world’s elite paddlers in races such as the Olukai, Association of Paddlesurf Professionals Tour Ho’okipa Beach on Maui, the Carolina Cup and on the Euro Tour. These boards have been tested more than any other race board in SIC’s history. The RS has proven to be race ready and will surely take you to the top of your game and front of the pack. Starting price at: $2699.95

After years of shaping, testing, racing and creating world-class watercraft, Raaphorst took all of this cumulative knowledge into the shaping bay and what came out were the Bayonet 14.0 and Bayonet 17.1. A sleek, narrow and super-fast downwind board that worked amazing in sub-twenty knot conditions and increased top end speed in all conditions. This board does not have F.A.S.T. for 2018. As many downwind races in the 14.0 class are fixed-fin, we opted to leave F.A.S.T. off to make sure the board is as light as possible. This board features a higher bow volume, lowered deck standing area and balanced outline. The board has a balanced outline and wider tail to enhance rail-to-rail stability. Starting price at: $2699.95
