Message from the Board

W

e’ve had another great show with the Reining Alberta Summer Classic. Entries were up quite a bit from last year, and it was great to see so many people in attendance. This year the Board was happy to introduce a new 4, 5&6 Year Old Derby at the Summer Classic, and we thank all those who brought out horses to compete in it. It appears to have been a great success!!

always. The Peace Branch held a Judging Seminar and Schooling show on July 19&20th; branch members got a great deal of insight into the judging process and how they can improve their runs.

What to look for when evaluating a sale video of a finished show horse

W

hen I am looking to purchase a finished show horse for a client by video I really prefer to see a video of the horse being shown. We have all had the experience of feeling a horse being fantastic in the warm up pen but then showing like a completely different animal! A show video gives me a good idea of the horses strengths and weaknesses and also their “eye appeal” in the pen. I try to compare the ability of the rider in the video to that of my clients. Do they have to do a lot of slipping rein or careful riding to get the horse shown or is it more of a “point and shoot” kind of horse? If a show video is not available then I like to see a video of a horse at home with very little editing. That can be quite difficult to do but gives a potential buyer a better idea of how the horse handles things when maneuvers are strung together. For me personally, I really dislike videos that are over 6 minutes in length and 5 of those minutes are loping circles! Include a few circles that include speed control and lead changes but then get to stopping and spins before your potential buyer loses interest and moves on. You need to include a sample of all of the maneuvers but try to play up your horses strong points and minimize the weak. I do believe you should include the weak maneuvers in the video because it is a red flag for me personally if there are no spins or lead changes ect for a potential reining horse. By including the weak maneuvers also I feel it gives the viewer the confidence that you aren’t trying to hide anything in the video and they can decide then if the maneuver can be improved or suitable for the skill level of the purchaser ect. There are so many horses available for viewing on line that you need to capture your viewers attention immediately with a strong maneuver, catchy graphics or music. NAJYRC

Reining Alberta received the below letter from the Chef D ‘Equip of the Canadian Reining Team, and would like to share it with our members.

Dear Friends and RA members We are sad to announce the official cancellation of the NAJYRC REINING championship this year in Kentucky. Team members (west) Maxine Whiteside, Raelyn Serhan and Alexandra Hibberd would like to extend a huge thank you for all of your support in our Fund Raising Efforts. Special thanks to everyone that helped make this past weekend at the Summer Classic a success (Show directors and announcer – Leslie, Kathie and Nancy, RA Board of Directors, the donators and bidders of the Silent Auction items, everyone that requested a song for their fellow riders’ or themselves, and to the people that booked their stalls to be bedded) and a special thank you to Brenda Fitzgerald of “Just A touch of Western Couture” that created custom show shirts designed for the individual competition in Kentucky. The team intends to hold funds in trust for next years’ team, and with positive thoughts and aspirations for the future, we would like to use this year and into 2015 to properly prepare to send a team (or two?) to Kentucky. Thank you, on behalf of, the team and their support group, Very Sincerely, Wendy Johnston, Chef D ‘Equip Team Members: West – Maxine, Raelyn, Alex & Ontario – Emily Wilson, Amanda Peters Below is the official notice from Beth Hora, Chair of the CRC

"Hi Folks, It is with great regret that USEF and the CRC have cancelled the Reining component of NAjYR. Ten of the US riders pulled from the show late yesterday afternoon, for various reasons. and only six riders remain. With the chance of more cancelling by the end of the week, we did not want to risk anyone going to such expense and having no competition. I Thank You all, so much for all your outstanding efforts towards sending a Team of our Canadian Youth to Kentucky. It is sad that this wonderful competition continues to have some issues around Reining. However, we will work closely with USEF in order to bring reining back to the NAYRC even better and bigger than before"
