VERKHOVYNA DISTRICT COMMUNITY PROFILE
BASIC FACTS Verkhovyna district is a unique area covering the most alpine southern part of Ivano-Frankivsk region within the Great Carpathian Arc. The uppermost summits of Eastern Carpathians including the third highest peak of Ukraine – Mount Pip Ivan (2028 m) are located here. In the skies, on the top of this mount appears an impressive architecture known as ‘White Elephant’ observatory. One cannot find in Ukraine other building constructed on a higher altitude above sea level. Verkhovyna district is one of 14 administrative districts of Ivano-Frankivsk region. It neighbours with Rakhiv district of Zakarpattia region, with Nadvirna and Kosiv districts of Ivano-Frankivsk region, with Putyla district of Chernivtsi region. In the south and southwest the district boundary coincides with the state border with Romania (Maramures county), 49 km of length, which runs along the Chyvchyny range.

According to the Decree of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine of 11.08.1995 â„– 647 2009 all residential settlements in Verkhovyna district have special status of highland 2012 settlements. According to the article 6 of the Law of Ukraine "On the status of highland settlements in Ukraine" the state pensions, 2013 scholarships and all types of state material 0 aid paid under the current legislation for those who work, live or study in the highland settlement, are being increased by 20%.

Verkhovyna district is the famous holiday destination in Ukrainian Carpathians. The most visited tourist attractions are sandstone cliffs at Synytsya mount, associated with the name of legendary hero of the people's avengers Olexa Dovbush; mount known as ‘Painted Rock’, and ruins of the former Polish observatory on Pip Ivan mount (2028 m).
Many interesting exhibitions and interpretation information fascinate the visitors at the Historical museum of Hutsulshchyna, Roman Kumlyk Museum of Hutsul Life, Ethnography and Musical instruments, and Museum of one film ‘Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors’ in Verkhovyna. Ivan Franko Literary and Memorial Museum and Mykhailo Hrushevsky Museum in Kryvorivnia village, as well as Gnat Khotkevych National Museum of Hutsul Theatre in Krasnoillia village familiarise their guests with the famous historians, writers and actors.
Verkhovyna is rich on natural mineral springs that account for over 100 in the area. The studies prove that at least 10 mineral springs in Verkhovyna district taking their healing properties and chemical composition are close to prominent Caucasian mineral 11 local amateur musical and dancing groups spring known as ‘Narzan’. are awarded with the ‘folk’ title. Verkhovyna district has the highest figure for household floor space per capita in Ivano-Frankivsk region.
There are 35 secondary schools in the district, including Verkhovyna lyceum, 15 schools of I-III levels, 10 schools of I-II levels and 10 schools of I level. 3 educational establishments combine secondary and primary schools. 17 kindergartens and 2 out-of-school institutions.
The health care system in Verkhovyna district includes district hospital with 164 beds, 11 medical departments, 2 hospitals in medical districts, 2 primary care ambulant clinics in Krasnoillya and Zelene villages, 38 medical and obstetric posts. The clinic of general practice with a daily capacity of 150 visitors belong to the district hospital.
