I

found that while I was carrying out this photoshoot there were many textures in big structures such as trees or buildings but i found it hard to find interesting textures in small objects, until I looked in my fruit bowl. Fruit really wasnt the first thing that came to my mind but I managed to find a wide variey of texture within the fruit and I was lucky as the fruit was old giving it more bruises and marks. Concrete is a haven for remarkable textures as it suffers from natural corossion inflicted by the environment and this blurs the lines between man made and nature.

found that putting a black and white filter or reducing the saturation of the photos really emphasises the details in the texture. This is because the distraction of colour is taken away from the viewer making the texture the main focal point.


I

have placed these two photos together because they are widley contrasting. The blue material has a very subtle soft texture and some might not consider it as a significant enough texture but textures can come in all ranges. Bricks are a lot more obvious and rough. There are suprising similarities between them, such as the structure of the pattern. They both have a very methodical and structured pattern.



T

he thing that i started to investigate more after I had got the basic texture shots were artificial texture or textures that had been disturbed by somthing. I think these two photos work well because they are simple but effective. The stripping paint in the photo on the left adds a layer of texture to the concreate which I think adds effect because it looks almost deliberate. The photo below creates interest based on the accidental streak in the middle. the white streak was actually bird poo but I think that it has added a lot to the photo as without it the photo would just be a brown fence


I

n these photos I specificly focused more on circular shapes. It is quite hard to find circular shapeed textures in nature because things naturally grow in segments like rectangles and squares but I managed to find some man made objects that displayed a circular texture. The texture on the leather bag draws attention because of the vast number of circles that contrast against the light brown colour inbetween the circles. Funnily enough, even though the task was to photograph the textures, the zip actually becomes the focal point of the photo as it is the only flat texture present making stand out. The dull brown colour of the bag also helps emphasise the shapes as there arer no colour distractions. The second texture is exciting because it will be almost impossible for the viewer to determine what it is.



This composition is made up of four individual photos of curtains that I have ro-

tated and reflected in order to create this effect. This composition is very successful Ithink, because it looks quite mysterious almost like an optical illusion and unlike the other photos, the colour in this photo actually helps highlight the texture. The collection of photos on the right are arranged together based on the colour tone. they are all a shade of brown and I think this colour compliments each individual texture as it isnt to overpowering yet not to dull. They also have a small amount of metal present and in each of them it has become the focal point.



T

his texture is the strangest and most unique that I photographed . It originates from a pigskin drum that i was given many years ago and the reason that it is so strange is because there are still lots of hairs coming out of the skin. The drawing on the drum of a hippo really makes the photo as without it the photo would lack depth.

I managed to find some texture in the grass which i thought I

wouldnt only because grass genrally is quite boring and in a predictable pattern. This photo presents grass that has been cut and left on the floor creating a mount of greenery. I also like how there are lots and lots of different individual shapes if you look closely.


T

ree bark provides a nice variety of different atributes that makes the photo interesting. This tree bark provides colour, texture and depth. The tint of green provides the tree bark with a nice refreshing touch to the usual brown texture. The natturally aged look of the bark also provides focal interst within the deep lines and shapes.

LEATHER

I

carried out an extension photos-hoot to the textures one because I wanted to experiment further on the theme of textures. As apose to using a camera, this time i used a scanner as it creates a totally different effect. In this series of scans I planned to scan different types of leather, paper, leaves and scratched surfaces.


M

y first collection of textures was based around leather so first I began to collect a bunch of leather items such as wallets, watches and belts. I then proceeded to scan them in a range of different positions. I think using the scanner works as a great advantage because it adds a new element of isolation between the objects . the white backgrounds really emphasises the detail and the shadow of my hand adds extra interest to the photo.



T

he shoes were particularly interesting to scan because they had the most amount of detail and pattern. The brogues in particular will catch the viewers eye mainly because of the holes that are cut out of the leather that form a pattern and also because the viewer wouldn’t be used to seeing a shoe displayed in this way. I also scanned the other side if the shoe because I wanted to show the difference in texture between the texture of the top of the shoe and the bottom to compare. The trainer below had similar patterns and texture but that isn’t what makes t effective, the focus displayed in the scan is interesting because only certain parts of the trainer are in focus but it is all the important textural parts and the rest of it is obscured. The sole of this trainer has a more intricate texture than the sole of the shoe. It it creates interest because the amount of lines and patterns in it which creates a series of shadows.


T

he scan of the hat is one of my most successful scans out of this collection because I distorted it which will create interest. The way that I created this effect is by moving the hat down the scanner as it was scanning. The reason that I decided to use the effect on this particular object is because I realised that it didn’t have any sort of patters or a particularly interesting texture which meant it needed something else to make it an effective scan. The second scan is of one of my leather wallets and although it doesn’t have a particularly interesting form or pattern I wanted to display the way that the texture of leather can

P

aper isn’t usually a very interesting texture but once it is manipulated it can create something obscure. In order to create these scans I crumpled the tissue and experimented with the lighting choices. The texture scan that I think is the most successful if the bottom right, I think this because the minimal light in the photo compliments the tissue as it crates a whole range of shadows that highlight the creases.


P

aper is a similar texture to tissue but it has much harsher lines which creates deeper lines and darker shadows. I enjoyed manipulating paper because there were more choices of shapes to turn the into. Also because of the hard lines and deep shadows the scan has a lot of depth and creates a more 3d effect.

L

eaves have an interesting texture because they are full of lines. Main structure of the leaves are made up of lines but this doesn’t have an impact on the texture because it is very smooth. The leaves also presented me with a series of choices on the shape of it because it was very flexible but didn’t create any creases.



T

hese three types leaves all have different textures but ahve the same sort of shape. the first set of leaves at the top have a rreally furry, soft texture which comes across in the scan based on the lack of lines and shadows. the leaves in the middle has a completely different texture to the one abouve as it is very rigid, shiny and has dark shadows. the lines in the leaves create highlights but also deep shadows. the last leaf has an interestinng texture because it is a mix between the first and second one. it has linees that create shadows but they arnt very deep and it doesnt create a shiiny effect.


A

s the rest of the leaf textures were quite similar i wanted to experiment with more of a variety of leaves so i decided to scan some decomposing flower petals. the flowers petals had a really interesting texture because each petal was different. some of them were very wrinngled and rough whereas others had a softer feel. the colours of the petals is what will draw the viewers eye because it contrasts against the white background. the brown decomposing parts of the petal really helped in develping the scan because the deep lines creates shadows which gives it a 3 dimentional effect.



SCRATCHES

T

he final texture that I wanted to explore was scratching. Scratches can occur on almost every surface and I wanted to display the difference in the scratches. The scratches in the metal pot are a lot more detailed than then the rest and it has actually changed the original state of the material. The scratches in the cardboard was quite similar because they were very noticeable and have created a rough surface whereas the plastic isn’t doesn’t have such deep lines and the scratches didn’t change the surface severally, also there wasn’t much detail in the scratches of the plastic.

DRAWING ONTO PHOTOS TO EMPHASISE SHAPES OR ADDING WORDS USING PENCILS, PERMANENT MARKER PENS.


T he manual edit then I used in these set of photos is drawing over them using a pen. In this particular photos I drew cartoon characters over the photo because I wanted to change the perception of the photo as the audience will now have a different response based on the manual edit.


Iuallycarried on with the horror theme when manediting this photo. I wanted to create a sense of suspense and creepiness for the audience by drawing the eyes. The eyes are a representation of the atmosphere in the photo and makes the audience feel uneasy due to the eyes always seeming like they are looking at the viewer.


Iphoto n this photo I changed the whole atmosphere and theme of this and created an illusion that the viewer will try and uncover.

The way that I did this is by drawing on the iconic pieces that link to the 1960s such as dip dye clothing, round sunglasses, an afro and a peace sign. This then masked the original horror content of the photo, and the hand gestures of the model also assists in this illusion.


2. COMBINED BLENDED LAYERS ON PHOTOSHOP TO SHOW DEPTH, SCALE AND FANTASY WORLDS.


Iitaln technique these next set of photos I used the digcalled blending which is on

Photoshop. There are many different variety’s of blending modes, this particular one is called multiply. Blending these two photos together creates a fantasy theme and injects some vibrant colours to the dull photo.


T he blending technique that I used in this photo is

called difference. It created a haunting, mysterious feel. It also creates interest because it is difficult for the viewer to discover what the main focal point is. The subtle colours in the photo lets the viewer focus on the shapes and forms in the photo.


T

hese three photos are the most successful out of all of them because the intended message they carry and a also the end result created. The photo above is very eye-catching and interesting because it almost looks like an abstract painting. The focus points in the photo are off centre which could give the viewer an uneasy feel and also the colour blend is very subtle, its hard to know where each face starts and ends. Lines in this photo confuse the viewer even further as they don’t follow the colour of each character. The large photo on the right is successful because it has a hidden meaning behind it that the viewers wouldn’t figure out. The reason that I blended these two photos together in that particular position is because that is the women in the photos son and I blended him into her head because the it is supposed to represent her always having him on her mind.



3. CUTTING OUT SECTIONS OF PHOTOS AND REPLACING WITH OTHER PHOTOS OR LEAVING BLANK OR ADDING IN TEXT.

his particular photo was one of the mos effective out of the rest because the pa out follow the shape of the face which become an addition and doesn’t look out of


arts cut f place.

T

hese set of photos are all manually manipulated by cutting out shapes from certain parts of the photo and replacing them things such as pieces of card. I thought that this edit was most successful on portraits so I focused on that aspect . I carefully cut out pieces of the faces by leaving the main features of the face or following the contours of the face.



4. MAKING A JOINER FROM PHOTOS LIKE HOCKNEY



Ibecause decided to make the joiners digitally it means that I have more choice

in the display it. I took a joiner of my bedroom because it is personal to me and doing a joiner of a room creates a panorama.



T his joiner almost records a 360 degree angle and I think that is quite ef-

fective because the shape that it has created. This photo doesn’t really have a main focal point because there isn’t anything centralised in the photo and there is a theme with the colours used.



5. WORKING IN BLACK AND WHITE AND ADDING PAINT TO EMPHASISE AREAS.

U sing paint to cover parts of a blck and white photo is a very effective way to manually edit a photo because removing somthing from a photo can be even more effective than leaving it in. in these first set of photos i used red paint to cover significant parts of the face.


O

n this first photo on the left I used the red paint to eliminate the focal point of the photo and create confusion for the viewer because now there isn’t any eye contact between the viewer and the person in the photo. In the photo below it I created a shape in order to centralise the photo and to also eliminate the lines within it that separate parts of the photo. The red paint also gives it a sinister atmosphere. I changes my ideas in the way I applied the paint in the next two photos because I wanted it to represent the emotions going on in the photo. The top left photo is a high intense action shot so I decided to splatter the shots to represent chaos. In the bottom right photo I wanted to represent the emotions anxiousness and loneliness.

6. SCANNING OBJECTS AND IMAGES TO CREATE A COLLAGE OF WORK.

I

n this section of the photo-shoot I collected a range of objects and placed them over images from my previous photo-shoot. I chose carefully what sort of objects I would be placing on top of the image as I wanted it to either have a contrast against the photo or to link in some sort of way. In the photo above I decided to add party objects onto the photo so that the context of it will change. Before the photo had a very sinister feel to it and the character looked like her was doing a creepy smile but now that the objects are added he can be persevered as looking happy as party’s represent happiness.



T

he photo above is the most effective out of the collection, this is because it doesn’t just look as if I have placed a random object onto the photo, the object has actually become part of the photo. The reason that I chose this particular objects is because it contrasts against the content of the photo and creates a new atmosphere. The object covers most of the face apart from the eyes and this means that the audience will find it very hard to decipher the original emotions of the photos because the emotions lie in the facial expressions which are covered.




I

n the photo above I took out all the change that I had in my pocket and placed it on this photo because if the expression that the character is displaying. I wanted to create the sense that the character I counting the change. I reused the same objects in the photo below because this photo has a similar theme to the previous one. The content has completely changed and he now looks like a magician.


7. PINHOLE PHOTOGRAPHY

P

inhole photography is the simplest form of photography as all that it requires is a light proof tube and light sensitive paper. I really like pin hole photography because it isn’t refined like digital photographs and it would be nearly impossible to create the exact same photo again. This particular photo was taken in a 40 second exposure which created quite a dark photo but all of the detail is highlighted. What I think is interesting about this photo that happened just by coincidence is the writing going across it, this came about because I had to write the amount of seconds I used to expose the paper and it ended up seeping through.



T

he second pin hole photo that I made wasn’t as successful as the first one because it is over exposed and only displays the intense light in the photo. Even though the photo didn’t come out as expected it is still quite effective as when I change the positioning of it then it can be made into a pattern.


I

experimented with the blending tool using the photos from the texture photo-shoot which was particular effective form the photo above as the petals that are overlayed blend naturally into the photo and create a magical atmosphere. The other two photos also have a syfy element to them.



I

experimented further with merging the layers of interesting textures and the pin hole camera. The ones that were the most successful were the textures that didn’t have a lot going on in the background.




8. PHOTOGRAMS


C reating a photogram was a difficult technique because it took quite

a few goes to actually get the exposure time right as it was different for every photo.. I specifically chose certain photos that have a lot of detail and contrast between the lights and the darks in the photo. In the photo above I decided to experiment with the hue and saturation of the photo so that I could add some colour into it and I think it s effective because it takes away the main element of photograms which is that they are always in black and white

BROWNIE SIX 20

U sing a brownie six 20 camera is a very interesting way of taking photos because even though it looks like a film camera its essentially just an empty shell but I really like how much control you have over the image created, also the image quality is surprisingly very good given the fact that everything is done manually.


I

experimented with the photos by creating a series of the same photo but with a different hue and created this, which actually works together because the colours compliment each other, even the photos that didn’t seem to turn out very well created an interesting effect as most of the detail was captured on the inside of the photo.






Level 5


WARM BODIES

F

or my next three photo-shoots, I decided to focus the main theme on horror films. I decided to do this, because it was the week leading up to Halloween, so I thought that it was fitting to base the next photo-shoots with that theme in mind. This first photo-shoot is based on the character above who is from the zombie film Warm Bodies. I chose this particular film is because it is my favourite zombie film as it defies the normal conventions of horror films. During this photo-shoot I will use a series of techniques and ideas; experimenting with shutter speed and varied aperture settings. I will also be doing a literal photoshoot and a symbolic photoshoot. During the process of this particular photo-shoot; I had to firstly do the costume and makeup in order for my model to look like the character and this took a bit of time, but the main things that I did to show a significant enough similarity, was to add the key features of the character. These key features included the blue stain in the corner of his mouth, the green veins down his neck and the redness around the eyes.



I

firstly experimented in the different ways to photograph him using different angels and positions. I thought that to make this shoot as effective as possible and for the character to be the main focal point then it should be against a white wall as I’m not focusing on the location. The white background contrasts well against the model enhancing all the details needed.


T

his is one of my favourite photos from this particular shoot as I think that it is successful because it is centred, making it clear that the face is the main focal point. The colours in this shot also really complement each other as the background is tinted blue which works nicely with the blue stain on the mouth and also the slight blue tint in the face carrying on the theme and giving the image a very cold feel. The expression used portrays a sense of ‘creepiness’ which is supposed to make the viewer of the image feel uncomfortable, as that is how the character was portrayed in the film. The darkness under the eyes enhances the piercing feel of the eyes looking straight at the viewer.



T

he photo on the left is supposed to carry a deeper meaning which links very closely to the ideas in the film. The meaning behind it is that; the zombies are human and can still be saved but everyone on the outside sees them as monsters that need to be put down. The person outside of the mirror looking in represents the human side of the zombies that no-one sees and the figure in the mirror represents the monster that everyone else sees. The way that I achieved the is by first only painting the front of the face but then also using camera raw to brighten all the whites and darken the dark shades in the mirror which gives the person on the outside a sense of purity and the figure on the inside to represent evil. This photo above continues with the creepy theme and making the audience feel uncomfortable, I feel that the most successful way to do this is by using close up as it increases the relationship between the character and the audience.


T

he first technique that I used was high aperture, this overexposed the light in the photo giving them a ghostly feel. In this photo I used a very high aperture which created this very abstract photo that almost looks like a painting. I think that this photo is effective is because it will create a lot of interest to the audience because it is very hard to tell how this photo was taken and it will also raise questions on whether it has been edited.


T

his was another successful aperture photo because the photo created a cool blue overlay with minimal shadows that emphasise the shapes. The blue tone of the photo emphasises the eyes as it creates a large contrast enhances the eyes as the focal point.



T

he second technique that I used in this photo-shoot is shutter speed. I think that this was the most successful technique as I created the desired effect and also there was a lot that I could explore within this technique. I first experimented with the technique putting the setting on a slower shutter speed for 3 seconds. Similar to the photo above and in order to fully display the types of effects I could achieve. By instructing my model to move parts of his body such as the arms and the head I learnt that 3 seconds work well to display small movement. I later experimented using different times ranging from 2 to 8 seconds to measure the difference in effect achieved.


T

his photo is the most successful photo of the shutter speed collection based on a number of reasons, such as; the positioning of the model, facial expression, colour produced and shutter speed exposure time. The shutter speed that I used was 1 second, this made the photo simple but effective because the movement is very minimal but gives it a mystical feel. The colours in the photo give the photo a cool atmosphere which enhances the character link as the model has a cold lifeless feel just like the zombies in the film. The positioning of the model playing the character is a significant part of this photo because he looks enchanted or as if he is casting a spell.



I

n these two particular photos I tried to create a spooky and surreal atmosphere. The way that I did this is by increasing the shutter speed time to 6 seconds this gave the secondary figures more detail making it look like there are spirits emerging from the original figure. The mirror in the photo also helps to carry on the theme as it adds more depth to photo because the figures look like they have emerged out from the mirror..



I

experimented with the shutter speed further and used the shutter speed 1.5 seconds in order to create the photo above. This shutter speed created a slight off-set effect. This particular shutter speed time is quite interesting because it distorts the image in a way that isn’t really obvious which means that it isn’t obvious what technique has been used. I prefer for the audience to create a series of questions after seeing my photos. The photo on the right is a perfect example of how changing the shutter speed can change the whole visual concept and perception of a photo. For the photo on the right, I used the shutter speed time 5 seconds and this created the illusion of a ghostly hand appearing on his shoulder. The photo has a very mysterious feel to it and the facial expression of the model enhances that, the cool blue tone helps give it a cold lifeless feel.



T

he next camera technique that I used was sports mode setting. This takes photos as quickly as possible to capture fast movement. This technique is very interesting because it captures action and movement perfectly, the only downside to this technique is that the quality of the photo decreases. During this photo-shoot I wanted to capture the movement that I made the actor create which would represent the movements made by the zombies in the film Warm Bodies.


T

o create this effect I made the model constantly move using the required movements as if I was filming, this then created authentic movement that looked natural and really captured the story.


I

took a series of about 20 action shots and these are the photos that display the technique most effectively in the order they were taken.



I

n this photo I used the Harrison shutter effect which splits the photo into three different colour layers. The reason that I decided to use this effect on this particular photo is because it doesn’t have any particular focal point and focuses more on texture, the effect then adds a distorted colour overlay. I think this photo is effective is because the colours from the effect blend perfectly with each other to create a spectrum which also adds interest to the texture of the beard.


I

n order to create this technique I had to make two layers of the photo (one in black and white, one in colour) and then use the marque tool to cut out shapes of the black and white layer to reveal the colour underneath. I used this technique to explore the ways I could use colour to create a different atmosphere to the photo. Colour changes a lot about the mood of a photo; the black and white photo has a dark cold feel where as the colour photo has a cool mysterious tone.



T

he photo on the right was only edited slightly using rotation and multiplying because the specific photo already had everything needed and would have been overbearing if I decided to edit it further. To create this effect I just reflected the photos and then joined them together on Photoshop, this created an abstract look. The photo above was created using the crystallize filter; it is effectual because the face is still recognisable and colours used are enhanced by this edit.



T

he photo on the right is my favourite of all the edits from the zombie photo-shoot because it is a very striking photo that will draw the audience in. The eyes are the main focal point of the photo and it is centred which enhances this, also the colour under the eyes draw the viewers to the eyes because it is one of the only things on the photo that are in colour. The shades of blue really complete the photo contrasting to the greys of the photo. The way that I created this photo is by creating two copies of the photo (one in black and white the other in colour) then I used the rubber tool to rub out sections of the black and white photo to reveal the colour. The second photo above creates a layered ominous feel. This photo was created using the blended tool, I layered these two photos on top of each other and then used the blending tool called lighten to complete this effect.


T

his photo is supposed to portray a ghostly atmosphere. I used several techniques in order to create this photo, the first thing that I did was duplicate the photo four times and then I reduced the opacity of each of them, then placed them alongside each other to create this effect.


T

he reason that this photo is effective is because of the colours used. The main face in the photo has been put in black and white to contrast against the luminous blue overlayed face. The way that I created this photo is by layering the photos 0ver each other in Photoshop and then using the blending technique called difference to create this effect.



T

his photo-shoot is to illustrate the horror convention of possession as a lot of horror films use children’s dolls and toys as a means of scaring the audience, as children’s toys represent innocence and playfulness. So when this is reversed, this is a stark contrast and presents a more shocking and out of sync distortion to the usual visual image of a child’s toy. This photo-shoot links to me personally as this is actually my own childhood toy which provides a deeper sense of meaning and purpose to the photo shoot. Using my childhood toy to produce this series of photos I aim tell the story of possession through the photo-shoot that is intended to present a dark and disturbing altered reflection of a child’s toy. During this photo shoot I will be taking a series of photos that document the journey of the toys possession presented in different locations within the house.


T

his photo illustrates the very start of the possession with the shadows of a dark spirit looming in on the monkey from above as the monkey stares upwards frightfully, the monkey is gradually overcome and possessed. I chose to use a corner as the shadows are more effective across two walls simultaneously displaying a 3D effect and giving more drama and emphasis to the shadows. I edited this photo in camera raw to change the temperature from a warm tone to colder tones that better represent the tone of a generic horror film. The only downside to taking photo shoots in low light, indoors and without a flash is the reduced quality of the images due to lack of lighting.


T

his photo shows the monkey in a state of possession slumped on the floor half way behind a door looking barely conscious and almost trying to cling to the door out of desperation or confusion. This photo is aimed to provide a sense of chilling drama and the use of placing the monkey half way behind the door is to reference the unknown. The audience is left wondering; is the monkey being pulled or left behind the door trying to escape or simply laying there. I chose this position utilising the natural lines in the wood grain of the door and also the flooring, both sets of lines lead the eye towards the monkey making it the focal point and the only object that is not uniform within the shot. Using a low angle shot I attempted to give a better sense of presence within the foreground of the image and also the impression of the monkey having a sense of more power and authority.



T

hese two photos represent the next stage of the possession of the monkey as the monkey begins to take on a darker and more sinister nature. This part of the photo shoot is inspired by cult horror films like ‘Child’s Play’ famous for the toy doll with a knife. I did various things so that the monkey could be represented as a living organism, I did this is by positioning the monkey into a upright sitting position like a child, I also added the knife in the photo because it represents violence which can only be carried out by a person. There are certain factors in this photo that creates this dark atmosphere such as the spotlight torch I put on the monkey as this enhances the focal point.


T

his photo has a very dark and creepy feel to it, this is because of the limited light that I purposefully used and also the angle used. I used a high angle shot because I wanted the monkey to look like it was looking up into the camera, this camera height also gives the audience a point of view shot as it is almost as if someone has just opened the back door and discovered this toy with a knife. This also increases the relationship between the photo and the viewer.


T

his photo is one of the most effective of this particular photo-shoot because it displays a deep sense of emotion for an inanimate object. The spotlight on the monkey draws the viewers eye to the face of the monkey where the detail lies. The face of the monkey is what really makes the photo what it is, this is because the monkey looks like it is smiling which gives it character and a creepy feel.



I

wanted to introduce more human actions to my photo because I wanted to build a bigger connection between the audience and the monkey by giving it roles that they might do. The way that I did this is by seating it on a chair and sitting it in a way that looks almost natural. The knife that I added into the photo gives it a sinister atmosphere. In the photo on the left I used a low angle shot to make the monkey seem bigger than it is and like it is looking down on the audience.

his photo is particularly striking because of the violent connotations linked to it. The monkey looks as if it is climbing over the wall looking for its next victim. The way that I portrayed this idea is by placing one of the monkeys hands over the wall with the knife as if it was pulling itself up and also I used a low angle close up of the knife to emphasise the size of it and also to give the photo more depth.


T

his photo is very interesting because it has the concepts and conventions of the effective horror movies. The ideas behind it that you don’t know who’s watching who, its either the viewer is watching the monkey and it noticed or the monkey was always watching you.


T

his is another version of the previous photo just from a slightly different angle and also a different positioning of light. In the previous photo I used a torch to illuminate the monkey from below as this deepens the shadows in the face making it look menacing, I decided to change this and light the monkey from the left which makes the monkey look more curious and also the knife is revealed more as it reflects the light.


T

his photo displays the monkey almost at the end of its journey and I wanted it to represent the monkey deeply thinking which I think gives of a creepy vibe as if you look closely there is a little smile on its face. The way I created this photo is by tying its hand onto a washing line, I didn’t want the intentions behind this photo to be obvious I wanted the audience to find their own interpretation.


I

used these to photos in order to show how lighting can change the mood of the photo. In the first photo I used very low light, only highlighting half of its face and this automatically gives off a dark vibe as the shadows are very deep and it is looking straight into the camera increasing the relationship between the photo and the audience. The photo on the right was taken using a lot of light, this increased the contrast between the background and the monkey which enhances it as the focal point. More importantly the photo has a calm mood to it as the monkey almost looks happy, this shows that lighting has a big influence in the atmosphere and meaning of a photo.



This photo-shoot is based on cult classic

horror films from the 80’s and 90’s. During this photos-hoot I will be taking a series of photos that link to the specific film posters that I have chosen. The photos-hoot doesn’t end there though, I will have to then go onto Photoshop and edit them further. I will have to match the text in the poster as closely as I can and also the colours. The whole idea of this photos-hoot is to recreate iconic 80s film posters but make it personal to me by using my family as the models for the photos.

80’ CLASSIC

horror films were exploding onto the big screen with the increase in the interest in the general public going to cinemas. During this era horror films were mass produced and were the films most released around this time. In an article about 80s horror films they explained that “ Horror movies of the 1980s (which probably begin in 1979 with Alien) exist at the glorious watershed when special visual effects finally caught up with the gory imaginings of horror fans. Technical advances in the field of animatronics, and liquid and foam latex meant that the human frame could be distorted to an entirely new dimension, on screen, in realistic close up. This coincided with the materialistic ethos of the 1980s, when having it all was important, but to be seen to be having it all was paramount. People demanded bigger, shinier, faster, with more knobs on - as verification of their own value in society. In the same way, horror films during this decade delivered the full colour close-up, look-no-strings-attached, special effect in a way that previous practitioners of the art could only dream about. Everything that had lurked in the shadows of horror films in the 1950s could now be brought into the light of day. The

experimented further with the psycho poster by recreating the same pose but changing the object in the photo, by doing this I changed the who perspective of the photo and the way that it is portrayed to the audience.


I

decided to do a complete contrast by using a less aggressive object to completely change the context of the image because I wanted to display how important the object is to the photo because even though the facial expression and pose hasn’t changed the audience will give a completely different response to each of them.


I have created a series of quotes for each photo from the characters perspective which will develop the relationship between the viewer and each character and show the viewer how different the responses can be just based on the change of one object in the photo

carried out a photoshoot based on the first zombie shoot because I wanted to explore the idea using different environments ,lighting and angles.




I

n this shot I wanted to create a feeling of cold and the use of a blue light helps to illustrate this. I also wanted to add perspective and so I used a focused foreground perspective with a out of focus background and the character is looking away from the camera which makes the audience question what he is looking at.





T

his image represents true horror genre and is a symbolic reference to the theme. I used a mid shot to create an Erie atmosphere and utilised the light in the background to crate an elongated shadow for further effect. Then specific aspects that make this photo effective is the lines, colour and lighting. There are many lines used in this photo and they all lead the viewers eye to the focal point in the middle. The lighting helps to separate the focal point from the rest of the photo so the viewers eye doesn’t get distracted by what else is happening in the shot. To increase this I digitally edited this photo on camera raw by increasing the exposure and highlights in the photo.






T

his photo has a very chilling feel to it and that is mainly based on the lighting used. In this photo I used a blue light which illuminates the character giving him a ghostly glow which links to the whole horror aspect. The blue light also provides different and more interesting range of tones in comparison to the normal white and black tones. It also provides more depth as the light is very harsh and focused which means some parts are more illuminated than others.







T

he angle of this particular image is shot in a way that provokes a feeling that the character is about to jump down unto an unsuspecting victim. However, this is a clever use of environment as the character is actually in a bush crouching down. Again, the use of blue light provides a sense of depth to the image and only illuminates the focus of the image, being the character and doesn’t detract from the theme of the shoot.



F

or this image I chose to use an off centre shot and using a completely black background, allows the audience to focus solely on the character. The position of the character is set to be very sinister, hiding in a bush as though ready to ambush his prey.





T

his image is intended to look creepy and the use of the sign is purposely placed to provide a sense of reality to the shot and give a darker feel to the image. The character lurching over the sign is to give the indication that he is coming for you. I have used clear symmetry to centre the audience view on the character







I

used the straight lines of the metal bars in this image to reflect a sharp focus against the blue light which provided varied tones to the shot. The position of the character slightly obscured by the metal bars offers the audience a perspective that the character is held back by the gate, like a caged animal. The low angled shot is used to give the character more power in the shot and the depth of field brings this to life.













I

n this image I chose to full represent a use of the environment bringing to life the available colours within the natural setting. The vibrant greens in varied shades give the image a different feel and the lack of blue light within this particular shot provides an alternative feel to the other images within this shoot. I felt this was important to be able to provide a slight contrast to the context of the character just through the use of colour.


T

he image displays technique in using a low angled shot with a defined tilt. I decided to experiment with the angle and find some different ways of showing the character in a menacing way through the use of silhouette and the hard light in the background. I like the detail in the blades of grass in the foreground as they stand out against the line of the wooden fence which leads the eye up the path and to the central character.









I

n this photo I intended to change the colour scheme of the shoot by adding warm orange colours into the background that contrast from the cold blue of the character. I wanted the character to look like he was about to intrude on the happy atmosphere of the home and carry the cold darkness with him. Also the fact that the character doesn’t have a defining edge and has slipped into the darkness of the background brings the whole photo together as there isn’t one specific focal point.






I

n this photo I intended to convey the sense of horror purely using the facial expressions of the character. Using a close up means that the audience can read the emotions of the shot and the eyes are looking directly into the camera which builds the relationship with the viewer.

he glimpses of original colour of the character subtly creeps back into focus in this image almost presenting the character as reverting back to being human, or at the point of transforming into being a zombie. The use of the blue light against the steel post brings emphasis to cold the metal enhancing the image further.










I

n this photo I intended create a creepy atmosphere . the way that I did this is by digitally editing the colour of the photo and reducing the saturation which gave it a more intense feel. The other things that assisted this is the positioning of the character, he is pressed up against a fence like a predator waiting to pounce.

like this image as the detail is striking and the image is very interactive as the audience are compelled to look into the one visible eye of the charterer







I

n this photo I decided to focus on the colour aspects mainly from the background. The vibrant purple background will attract the viewers eye and the tree branches look almost as if they are bolts of lightning in the shy. The tree in the shot also breaks up the photo using an interesting angle.

ames Welling creates these flower effects by placing the blossoms of a common southern California plant on sheets of 8x10 film and exposing them to light. The negatives were then projected onto special photo paper through a colour mural enlarger and colour filters, to produce the dramatic, colourful effect. This technique is really abstract and I am really interested in using bright vibrant colours in my final piece and contrast them against something black and white .I could use this idea to create a similar effect using roses and them overlay them with photos from


MARIO PASCUAL

M

ario pascual uses objects to add effect to his photos and then this also turns them into a 3D composition. I really like this technique because it is a very simple concept but the way the objects link to the photos as if they were always there means he spent a lot of time choosing the right images for the photo. I could use this idea in my final piece by placing significant objects from the film that I am replicating.


MATHEW BRANDT

M

atthew Bradt is my favourite artist that I have researched so far based on his lake. For his project “Lakes and Reservoirs�, he used two tools: a photo camera and a 3 gallon container, to be filled with water. The thing that is significant about the water is that its the water from the lakes that he’s been photographing for years on the western coast of the United States. After photographing the lake he collected their water in the container and printed the photos, Brandt emerges them in the liquid for days, weeks or even months, allowing the image to alter with spectacular chromatic effects. To create this result Brandt uses different types of photographic prints based on the traditional process of developing negatives to positives, called c-print (chromogenic print). this technique gives my many ideas of what to do. One of my ideas is to create a giant film strip which would contain A4 sized photos and those photos will be from the zombie shoot arranged in a way that looks like it is telling a story. The photos will be edited using this technique and I will use bleach to edit the actual film strip to add effect.


SIGMAR POLKE

igmar polkes is a German painter that blurs the lines between photography and art. I like his photos because he uses a range of mixed media and colour to create a contrasting effect on the photos. The photos attracted my attention because he used black and white photos and then paints and draws on them with vibrant colours changing the whole atmosphere of the photo.

his is one of my final piece ideas. I will be making a movie based poster board that will display 4 of my photos. Each photo will be edited using a different manual technique such as bleaching, cutting shapes out, inking and collage. In the background I will attach roses but the will be pressed against the board so that the posters can go on top of them.



T

his is one of my mock ideas for the final piece. I wanted to bring the photos to life and tell a story. The way that I thought to do this is by creating a 3D environment which represents the story in the photos. The way I did this is by making an abandoned derelict house where I will place each photo into different positions around the house to give a haunting effect as if it is a haunted house.






I

have decided what design I am going to use for my final piece. I have decided to use the film strip idea but develop further on it. I will be using the template on the left as my base design but the way that I will be editing it is by splitting the photos onto three layers and spacing them evenly apart from each other.

T

he black film strip boarder will be on the first layer which will be made of a glass or perspex thick sheet. The faces will be on the second layer in the same position as they would be in this example and the background will be on the last Layers.

T

he way that I have enhanced certain aspects of the piece to get the best result is by turning the background into a moving object. The way that I will do this is by putting a selection of coloured oils into a very thin perspex box so that the background is constantly changing.

W

hat I have also changed to add interest to this piece is adding a light box to the back of the third layer and printing the photos of the model onto acetate which would mean it would be projected a wall with the moving background.
