Living on an island like Guam lends itself to tropical and island décor, just by adding small pieces that mimic the outdoors. Colors, landscapes, trees, plants, flowers and even wildlife specific to Guam can be used to feature the island which can whisk you away to a secluded beach and relaxing all day in the shade.

“Tropical colors always bring a lot of life on any bad day,” said Sid Nama, executive director of Vertex Guam, a general contractor. “I would recommend using lush greens, ocean blues, vibrant coral shades, citrus and sandy shades, with artwork including marine creatures, birds and of course palm trees.”

An easy way to add tropical flair to your decor is by incorporating some plants in the aesthetic.

Local plant nurseries and landscape companies will have a variety of offerings to add to your tropical living room, bedroom, dining room or family room. Local furniture stores also carry artificial pieces that are less maintenance and can be a focal point in a room that carries with it the relaxing climate and mood of the island.

“Choose interior and exterior art, furniture and rugs made of natural fibers such as jute, sisal and sea grass to add to the tropical feel. Bamboo-inspired elements are also another way to enhance the tropical look,” Nama added.

Aside from plants, the right accent pieces in the right colors will make your room complete.

Tropical inspired pieces such as clocks, picture frames, tropical inspired beverage containers, accent pillows in colors that tie the room together are endless. Throw pillows and throw blankets in dramatic green with palms or that feature tropical flowers can make a big impact. Wall art with a tropical flower like a hibiscus or a dragonfly and some coconut leaf woven features shout the tropics. Installing a hammock or chair that hangs from the ceiling will definitely meet the goals of incorporating tropical décor in your home.

Color and foliage from the outside can turn your home into a cozy vacation spot.

While we live on an island, the daily routine can often take away from the soothing vibe of the island tropics, so turning your home into a sanctuary can help you slip into relaxation. p
