History Once part of the Mississippian culture and home to the Mound Builders, the area now known as Columbia was first populated by Osage and Missouri Indians. The Lewis and Clark Expedition passed by the area on the Missouri River in 1803. In 1806, Nathan and Daniel Morgan Boone discovered a salt lick 40 miles northwest of Columbia. The Booneslick Trail wound from Kentucky through St. Charles, Missouri, to the Boones’ saltworks. In 1818 a group of settlers, incorporated under the Smithton Land Co., established the village of Smithton less than a mile from current-day downtown Columbia with the purchase of more than 2,000 acres. Due to lack of water, the settlers moved in 1821 across Flat Branch Creek to the plateau between Flat Branch and Hinkson creeks — in what is now the downtown district. They renamed the settlement Columbia. l 10

New residents moving to Columbia will automatically receive a voucher within three weeks of signing up for city of Columbia utilities. The vouchers can be redeemed at most local grocery stores for complimentary blue recycling and black trash bags. If you expected to receive a bag voucher and did not, please contact WasteZero Inc. at 1-800-866-3954. • Columbia uses a dual-stream recycle system, which means “Fiber” (paper, cardboard, newspaper) and “Containers” (plastic No. 1 to 7, glass, aluminum) are collected separately. For curbside customers, containers must be placed in the blue bags, while fibers need to be broken down and placed in a paper bag or box. Piles should be clearly separated at the curb. • Items such as demolition debris, automotive parts, hazardous materials, whole tires and felled trees cannot be collected with regular refuse. A map of Columbia’s 11 recycling drop-off locations can be found at CoMo.gov/ utilities/solidwaste. Please do not deposit plastic shopping bags in the drop-off containers. • To arrange a free pickup of oversized items, call the Contact Center or complete the online request form at least 48 hours prior to your scheduled collection day. This includes bulky items such as furniture and carpet (cut in lengths of 4 feet and in rolls not to exceed 2 feet in diameter). For more information, call 573-874-CITY(2489). • Major appliances — washer, dryer, range, freezer, dehumidifier, stove, dishwasher, refrigerator, water heater, air conditioner, trash compactor, conventional oven —

will be picked up on your regular collection day. Call 573-874-CITY at least 24 hours before, or submit your request online at least 48 hours before your regular trash day. The appliance will need to be curbside by 7:30 a.m., and an additional fee will be added to your monthly utility bill.

Yard Waste Collection • When possible, leaves, grass, twigs and small branches should be dropped off at a yard waste site. Alternatively, they may be placed in a bag by the curb on your regular collection day and taken to the landfill. • Limbs must be bundled and should not exceed 4 feet in length, 2 feet in diameter and 50 pounds per bundle.

Household Hazardous Waste Drop-off • Columbia residents may take their household hazardous waste products to the Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Collection Facility at 1313 Lakeview. • The facility is only open on the first and third Saturdays April through November, 8 a.m. to noon. • No hazardous products are collected curbside. • If your paint can is empty or the paint is completely dry, you can throw it away. To dry any remaining paint, leave the lid off for a couple of days, or use kitty litter to absorb the excess paint. Then throw the can away.

Downtown Columbia has a vital and growing business district, and with Stephens College, Columbia College and the University of Missouri outlining downtown, there is limited parking. The Municipal Parking Utility maintains all parking garages, surface lots and street meters.

PARKMOBILE APP Easy to download, go to Parkmobile.com or scan the QR code on any Parkmobileenabled meter, download the app, register and begin paying for parking via the app. All downtown meters accept payment via the Parkmobile app. Each Parkmobile-enabled meter will have a bright green sticker with a unique fourdigit parking zone number. Meeting or appointment runs longer than expected? With the Parkmobile app you can add time to the meter, up to the maximum allowed, remotely from your smartphone. And you can set reminders so that you are notified before your meter expires.

NEW COMO PARK CARDS CoMo Park Cards are the new reloadable parking payment cards and are accepted by all downtown meters. CoMo Park Cards can be obtained and reloaded at the Public Works department office on the third floor of City Hall.

There are six multilevel parking garages in downtown Columbia. The six facilities have a total of 2,300 parking spaces. Parking garages are made up of hourly, permit and reserved spaces. The hourly spaces at Seventh and Walnut currently use a ticket and attendant system. The remaining parking garages utilize pay machines that use a payment-in-advance concept, with the exception of Eighth and Cherry and Short Street, which have parking meters at each hourly space. The payment machines are located at the facility exits. Patrons are required to take note of their parking space as they park and then pay the machine for the space and anticipated period they will be parked there.

Columbia is centrally located within the state, and two major roadways — Interstate 70 and U.S. 63 — divide the city. Because of these roadways, Columbia is one of the most accessible cities in Missouri. • I-70 travels straight through Columbia and heads west toward Boonville and Kansas City and east toward Kingdom City and St. Louis.

It’s a Seller’s Market in Columbia “Homes currently on the market are inundated with showings and offers,” says Realtor Denise Payne. “And many people are building because they can’t find something they like.” Prices for rentals are also up, making purchasing a home often more attractive than renting. So if you don’t want to miss out on the property you want, Payne recommends being prepared to make a decision quickly. Have your loan approval letter in hand, and be ready to pull the trigger. For remote buyers, that can mean committing to buying a home before seeing it in person. Payne says she has used FaceTime to show houses to remote buyers. “I had one couple who lived three hours away. The first time they saw their new house in person was at the inspection,” she says.

When Realtor Denise Payne saw a new construction come on the market last December in Steeplechase Estates, located within the Thornbrook community, she reached out to her clients Marilyn and Wesley May right away. Location, Location, Location COLUMBIA REALTOR DENISE PAYNE SHARES HER APPROACH TO HELPING BUYERS FIND THE RIGHT NEIGHBORHOOD. How do you help newcomers know where to start in finding a home in the right location? We really take it on a case-by-case basis according to what’s best for the individual. Sometimes it will be based on where their job is and how long of a commute they want to have. If they have children, it might be based on what school they’d like their kids to attend. Maybe they’re avid bicyclists, and they’d like to be near a trailhead. We like to sit down and have those conversations ahead of time, whether in person or by phone, to see what part of the area is best for them. Then we try to limit the homes based on the area of town that will make them happy, so it’s customized to their needs.

What should newcomers know about finding a home in Columbia? I always like to start by telling them about the different features Columbia has to offer. I give them a community tour where we go downtown, to Cosmo Park, to Stephens Lake to help them see all the different aspects of the city. It only takes about an hour and

a half to go through the whole town, but it’s so helpful for getting a feel for what appeals to them, what they like to do in their spare time and how that will affect their home search.

What are the most popular new neighborhoods in Columbia? The Brooks, out on the east side of town, is very popular right now. Golfers like the close proximity to Old Hawthorne. Three newer condo developments to keep your eyes on are Vintage Falls (they’ve got a new plat opening up); Bristol Lake Villas, a brand-new development; and Smithton Crossing, which has built more condos recently because of the great demand. Nursery Heights, in the southwest part of town, is another new subdivision that’s really popular right now. They’ve kept the homes there at starter-home prices (low $200,000s), so young families can get into the schools that funnel in the southwest but won’t have to pay $300,000 for a house. There are also a couple of great newer ones up north. Somerset Village, near Battle High School, is right next to Lake of

the Woods Golf Course and the city swimming pool, so you get those amenities. Also up north, Tuscany Ridge and Arbor Pointe, both near the newer elementary school, are popular and affordable. That said, as a Realtor, we can’t tell buyers what neighborhood to move to or not move to, so it’s important to do your research.

What is one thing you wish all those in the market for a new home knew? A lot of people don’t understand that the listing agent works for the seller. When you call that listing agent thinking they should show you the house, you’re actually doing yourself a disservice. If you have your own agent, you’ll probably have a happier outcome. It’s not war, but it is negotiations, and you might in hindsight wish you had your own representation. As an agent, we can show buyers any house, whether or not it’s listed with our company. What’s important is that they have their own advocate.

Wide-open Spaces Although large lots aren’t the norm within the city limits, there are a few Columbia neighborhoods that offer a bit more room to spread out. The Country Meadows neighborhood, established in 1988 in southwest Columbia, offers large lots, at a median home price of $323,000. Homes in Harpers Pointe,

also in the southwest, are built on three- to five-acre lots, with a median home price of $438,000.

With the Cosmo Nature Trail, Hinkson Creek Trail, MKT Nature and Fitness Trail and many more spread throughout the city, you’re never far from an opportunity to exercise or explore. The city’s trails are open to everyone, but some neighborhoods boast direct trail access. For instance, in the southwest, the Cascades neighborhood has its own lake and walking trail, and Chapel Hill Estates is located near Twin Lakes parks and trails.

Walkability/Bikeability Depending on your place of employment, many Columbia neighborhoods will likely require a car for the morning commute. But thanks to the city’s extensive network of bike trails and bike lanes, taking two wheels to work is a viable option from many of the city’s neighborhoods. The Grasslands, one of the oldest neighborhoods in Columbia, is sought after for its central location and easy access to downtown and the university. Missouri weather can be unpredictable, with sunshine and mid-70s one day and snow the next. To help ensure your home is safe and prepared for the cooler months ahead, consider these winterization tips from mid-Missouri experts. Winter is coming, but first, some fall cleaning is in order. Here’s what to tackle to get your home ready: 1. DRIVEWAYS

Missouri typically has more ice in the winter than other states due to high levels of humidity, so it’s wise to have kitty litter or de-icer on hand before the storm hits. But keep in mind that de-icer isn’t all good. In fact, it can be damaging to concrete, which is why experts recommend homeowners clean their concrete ahead of bad weather. Cleaning and sealing concrete driveways and sidewalks protects against salt and de-icers, which can cause cracking and ultimately pitting and disintegration. 2. WINDOWS

Cold temperatures mean bigger heating bills. Clean your windows thoroughly to allow more sunlight into your home, which improves natural heating.

3. ROOF

One of the biggest fall cleaning tips is to keep a weathered eye on your roof. Black streaks are a sure sign of mildew and algae, which can deteriorate your shingles — not ideal come the impending snow and ice. Experts at Presidential SoftWash suggest lowpressure cleaning instead of powerwashing when it’s time to cleanse any exterior surface of a house, including a roof. QUICK TIPS • I nstall a whole-house humidifier for the winter. Air tends to be drier when the furnace runs, which can spur nose bleeds and other sinus issues. A whole-house humidifier addresses the dry air throughout all your living spaces rather than just one room. •T urn down the heat when you leave the house. Forgetting to do so can add up to hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars over the course of the winter. Many companies sell and install Wi-Fi-controlled thermostats, which can be controlled from your phone when you’re away. If that idea’s too pricey, try posting a reminder at the back door. l

Columbia boasts an abundance of sites where you can indulge your passion for musical performances. Whether you catch a great concert or watch a dance troupe in action, bust out your own moves or showcase your talents in a singalong, the CoMo beat goes on and on.

MUSIC Music lovers will find a variety of Columbia venues to enjoy a wide range of favorite genres. And for those who see music as an experience best enjoyed alongside other interests, take note of these key haunts whether you love food, nightlife, concerts … or all three.

For Foodies Downtown, Cafe Berlin and Broadway Brewery double as venues that bring in all types of musicians from solo acts to big bands. Although the kitchen isn’t open during concerts at Cafe Berlin, be sure to grab one of their signature waffle sandwiches for brunch and plan to return when the sun goes down for indie tunes and noteworthy drinks. At Broadway Brewery, Sundays equal brunch with bluegrass, and the last Monday of every month brings the Columbia Jazz Orchestra. Head over to west Columbia where Jazz, A Louisiana Kitchen cooks up authentic Southern cuisine often paired with live jazz, blues and rock.

On the south side of town sits Murry’s, known for excellent food and live jazz. The musical menu includes solo piano Monday through Thursday, a trio on Saturday nights, and Sunday shows featuring special entrees and the world’s top jazz artists as Murry’s continues its decades-long legacy in food and entertainment.

For Night Owls Eastside Tavern transforms into a karaoke bar on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays after 9 p.m. If you’re interested in taking the stage to sing one of the hundreds of classics offered, make sure you sign up as soon as possible — slots fill up quickly. If singing loudly and off-key isn’t your thing, the tavern brings in local comics on Tuesdays. Dancearts of Columbia Providing dance instruction since 1979, Dancearts of Columbia offers classes for people ages 2 and up in ballet; tap; jazz; modern; body toning; stretch, flex, leaps and turns; lyrical; hip hop; musical theater; and yoga. The studio accepts students for full-semester enrollments, but there are also dropin ballet classes every Saturday. Jabberwocky Studios Founded in 2015 by Linda Schust to create arts programming for diverse populations, Jabberwocky Studios invites people of all ages and experience levels to learn break dancing, tap, swing, ballet, contemporary African dance and its specialty: hip hop. Classes run one hour per week for 12 weeks. In addition to dance classes, Jabberwocky offers curriculum in art; theater; voice; and STEAM, or science, technology, engineering, art and math. Missouri Contemporary Ballet The only professional dance company in mid-Missouri, Missouri Contemporary Ballet doesn’t just boast an incredible company of dancers. It also provides a not-for-profit ballet school that relies on instruction from professionals. The School of Missouri Contemporary Ballet, founded in 2011, offers classes in various genres from classical ballet to jazz for dancers of all ages and experience levels. Students have the opportunity to perform at venues throughout mid-Missouri, and some have gone on to be accepted into the most acclaimed dance programs in the country. Columbia’s Drag Scenedom: Nclusion+ When Columbia’s Yin Yang Night Club closed the curtain on its final show in April 2020, the local LGBTQ community wasn’t ready to say goodbye to its outlet for entertainment and safe expression. The brainchild of seven business partners with a goal to create a sustainable LGBTQIA+ community club in Columbia, Nclusion+ fills that void, providing a safe space for LGBTQIA+ gatherings. Member support creates a sustainable source of revenue for the organization, enabling weekly drag shows, plus education and physical and mental health resources.

In a typical show, four performers perform three numbers in each round. Nclusion+ currently has about 45 drag performers on the roster, most from Columbia but some from as far away as Texas and Florida. Expect fabulous makeup and costumes and great entertainment. The shows provide performers an outlet to share their talent and a safe space to express themselves. Nclusion+ is a certified Safe Space organization. “This is a safe space to be who you are — whether LGBTQ or an ally,” says Plogger. Broadway Marketplace, at the junction of U.S. 63 and Interstate 70, features Academy Sports + Outdoors, Hy-Vee supermarket, Lowe’s, Sam’s Club, Staples, a Walmart Supercenter and several fast-casual dining options. Columbia Public Schools Accredited with distinction by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, Columbia Public Schools is the fifth-largest district in the state and includes 21 elementary schools, seven middle schools, four high schools, a career education center and an early childhood learning center. The school district’s newest building is the recently completed John Warner Middle School, opening for the 2020-21 school year. The district is also renovating and completing an addition to Locust Street Expressive Arts Elementary School and will begin construction soon on a classroom addition to Rock Bridge Elementary School. In 2019-20, CPS boasted an enrollment of 19,052 students from preschool to grade 12 and a studentto-teacher ratio of 13:1. Kari Dowell, director of admissions and marketing at Columbia Independent School, says that small

class sizes are a key contributing factor to student success. “[Private school class sizes] are smaller than in public schools,” Dowell says, “and that allows the teachers to provide more individualized instruction to students.” Advocates note that private schools often have a close-knit atmosphere as teachers, students and families get to know each other well. Remember Primary Care Urgent and quick care facilities have grown exponentially over the past decade, filling a void for individuals who can’t access their regular medical doctor on nights, weekends and holidays. At quick and urgent care facilities, the providers’ purpose is to offer quick, easy access to affordable health care only when your regular doctor isn’t available. It’s a casual meal with some of the church pastors, held at various times throughout the year. The church also offers Adult Connection Class to help participants develop a more biblically informed faith.

2. Join a small group Life Groups at Forum Christian Church help people connect to one another and the community in a relaxed, casual environment. These groups meet in homes around town throughout the week and cover a variety of topics. Community United Methodist Church hosts Sunday morning adult small groups as well as others throughout the week. For the majority of these and similar groups hosted by other local churches, the goal is to

build community while promoting Christian education.

3. Connect with other parents Mothers of Preschoolers is an international organization for expecting moms or moms of infants to preschoolers who are looking for support, friendship and encouragement. Created in 1973 by eight women in Colorado, MOPS groups meet in more than 60 countries. In Columbia, these groups are hosted at First Presbyterian Church of Columbia and offered as virtual meetings, mixed virtual/in-person meetings and inperson meetings. Additionally, churches might offer groups tailored specifically for women or men, where you can get to know other parents; research a church near you to see your options. Columbia’s Compass Evangelical Free Church, for example, offers men’s ministry groups via Zoom that “forge men of character, loving husbands and dads that disciple,” according to its website.

A lot of faith-based organizations offer events that are open to the entire community, regardless of whether you attend there for worship. Many churches offer vacation Bible school during the summer months, as well as day cares and preschools housed on their campuses. “The kids had a great time dancing the night away, as did the parents, who were able to drop their kids off and have an evening out,” McEntyre says. First Baptist also hosts six to seven online concerts per year through the Odyssey Chamber Music Series, which focuses on classical music. 5. Volunteer Serving others is a great way to connect with your new town, and many faith-based organizations facilitate volunteer opportunities in-house and throughout the community.
