History Once part of the Mississippian culture and home to the Mound Builders, the area now known as Columbia was first populated by Osage and Missouri Indians. The Lewis and Clark Expedition passed by the area on the Missouri River in 1803. In 1806, Nathan and Daniel Morgan Boone discovered a salt lick 40 miles northwest of Columbia. The Booneslick Trail wound from Kentucky through St. Charles, Missouri, to the Boones’ saltworks. In 1818 a group of settlers, incorporated under the Smithton Land Co., established the village of Smithton less than a mile from current-day downtown Columbia with the purchase of more than 2,000 acres. Due to lack of water, the settlers moved in 1821 across Flat Branch Creek to the plateau between Flat Branch and Hinkson creeks — in what is now the downtown district. They renamed the settlement Columbia. l 10

New residents moving to Columbia will automatically receive a voucher within three weeks of signing up for city of Columbia utilities. The vouchers can be redeemed at most local grocery stores for complimentary blue recycling and black trash bags. If you expected to receive a bag voucher and did not, please contact WasteZero Inc. at 1-800-866-3954. • Columbia uses a dual-stream recycle system, which means “Fiber” (paper, cardboard, newspaper) and “Containers” (plastic No. 1 to 7, glass, aluminum) are collected separately. For curbside customers, containers must be placed in the blue bags, while fibers need to be broken down and placed in a paper bag or box. Piles should be clearly separated at the curb. • Items such as demolition debris, automotive parts, hazardous materials, whole tires and felled trees cannot be collected with regular refuse. A map of Columbia’s 11 recycling drop-off locations can be found at CoMo.gov/ utilities/solidwaste. Please do not deposit plastic shopping bags in the drop-off containers. • To arrange a free pickup of oversized items, call the Contact Center or complete the online request form at least 48 hours prior to your scheduled collection day. This includes bulky items such as furniture and carpet (cut in lengths of 4 feet and in rolls not to exceed 2 feet in diameter). For more information, call 573-874-CITY(2489). • Major appliances — washer, dryer, range, freezer, dehumidifier, stove, dishwasher, refrigerator, water heater, air conditioner, trash compactor, conventional oven —
will be picked up on your regular collection day. Call 573-874-CITY at least 24 hours before, or submit your request online at least 48 hours before your regular trash day. The appliance will need to be curbside by 7:30 a.m., and an additional fee will be added to your monthly utility bill.
Yard Waste Collection • When possible, leaves, grass, twigs and small branches should be dropped off at a yard waste site. Alternatively, they may be placed in a bag by the curb on your regular collection day and taken to the landfill. • Limbs must be bundled and should not exceed 4 feet in length, 2 feet in diameter and 50 pounds per bundle.
Household Hazardous Waste Drop-off • Columbia residents may take their household hazardous waste products to the Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Collection Facility at 1313 Lakeview. • The facility is only open on the first and third Saturdays April through November, 8 a.m. to noon. • No hazardous products are collected curbside. • If your paint can is empty or the paint is completely dry, you can throw it away. To dry any remaining paint, leave the lid off for a couple of days, or use kitty litter to absorb the excess paint. Then throw the can away.
Questions about solid waste or recycling? Call the city of Columbia at 573-874-CITY(2489). Unsure of what recycling goes where or when to leave materials for curbside pickup? Download the COMO Recycle and Trash app to see directions on how to properly dispose of certain items. Enter your address to receive reminders the day prior to pickup, including any holiday schedule adjustments. 12

Downtown Columbia has a vital and growing business district, and with Stephens College, Columbia College and the University of Missouri outlining downtown, there is limited parking. The Municipal Parking Utility maintains all parking garages, surface lots and street meters.
Parking Garages
PARKMOBILE APP Easy to download, go to Parkmobile.com or scan the QR code on any Parkmobileenabled meter, download the app, register and begin paying for parking via the app. All downtown meters accept payment via the Parkmobile app. Each Parkmobile-enabled meter will have a bright green sticker with a unique fourdigit parking zone number. Meeting or appointment runs longer than expected? With the Parkmobile app you can add time to the meter, up to the maximum allowed, remotely from your smartphone. And you can set reminders so that you are notified before your meter expires.
NEW COMO PARK CARDS CoMo Park Cards are the new reloadable parking payment cards and are accepted by all downtown meters. CoMo Park Cards can be obtained and reloaded at the Public Works department office on the third floor of City Hall.

There are six multilevel parking garages in downtown Columbia. The six facilities have a total of 2,300 parking spaces. Parking garages are made up of hourly, permit and reserved spaces. The hourly spaces at Seventh and Walnut currently use a ticket and attendant system. The remaining parking garages utilize pay machines that use a payment-in-advance concept, with the exception of Eighth and Cherry and Short Street, which have parking meters at each hourly space. The payment machines are located at the facility exits. Patrons are required to take note of their parking space as they park and then pay the machine for the space and anticipated period they will be parked there.

With 90+ neighborhoods in Columbia that vary by location, walkability, schools and more, there’s a lot more that goes into finding a place to call home than choosing the perfect house. From historic charm to trail access to modern and unique amenities, Columbia neighborhoods have a lot to offer, all over the map. In search of the perfect neighborhood? Here are some basics — beyond bedrooms and square footage — to keep in mind: New Construction Construction in Columbia is booming all around the city. The Brookside Square, Monterey Hills and Willow Falls neighborhoods in northwest Columbia; Bay Hills, Bristol Lake, Old Hawthorne and Vineyards in the southeast; and Barcus Ridge, Deerfield, The Gates, Oak Park, Parkside Estates and Thornbrook in the southwest all have lots available, many with neighborhood amenities such as pools, clubhouses and access to nearby recreation. Choosing new construction means finding the right spot and having the opportunity to tailor the home to your needs.
It’s a Seller’s Market in Columbia “Homes currently on the market are inundated with showings and offers,” says Realtor Denise Payne. “And many people are building because they can’t find something they like.” Prices for rentals are also up, making purchasing a home often more attractive than renting. So if you don’t want to miss out on the property you want, Payne recommends being prepared to make a decision quickly. Have your loan approval letter in hand, and be ready to pull the trigger. For remote buyers, that can mean committing to buying a home before seeing it in person. Payne says she has used FaceTime to show houses to remote buyers. “I had one couple who lived three hours away. The first time they saw their new house in person was at the inspection,” she says.

When Realtor Denise Payne saw a new construction come on the market last December in Steeplechase Estates, located within the Thornbrook community, she reached out to her clients Marilyn and Wesley May right away. The Mays had been considering a move to Columbia from their home in Moline, Illinois, for several years now, in order to be closer to their son, daughter and grandchildren. The house that Payne found for them features no stairs, good accessibility (such as a walk-in shower) and relatively low maintenance. “It’s a slab home but looks out over the neighborhood lake, great for an outdoor enthusiast like Wesley,” Payne says. “With an absolute zero-entry shower and extra grab bars installed by the builder (Dynamic Builders), it meets their accessibility needs. It covers a lot of the bases.” CONTINUED

Location, Location, Location COLUMBIA REALTOR DENISE PAYNE SHARES HER APPROACH TO HELPING BUYERS FIND THE RIGHT NEIGHBORHOOD. How do you help newcomers know where to start in finding a home in the right location? We really take it on a case-by-case basis according to what’s best for the individual. Sometimes it will be based on where their job is and how long of a commute they want to have. If they have children, it might be based on what school they’d like their kids to attend. Maybe they’re avid bicyclists, and they’d like to be near a trailhead. We like to sit down and have those conversations ahead of time, whether in person or by phone, to see what part of the area is best for them. Then we try to limit the homes based on the area of town that will make them happy, so it’s customized to their needs.
What should newcomers know about finding a home in Columbia? I always like to start by telling them about the different features Columbia has to offer. I give them a community tour where we go downtown, to Cosmo Park, to Stephens Lake to help them see all the different aspects of the city. It only takes about an hour and
24
R E LO C AT I N G I N C O LU M B I A
a half to go through the whole town, but it’s so helpful for getting a feel for what appeals to them, what they like to do in their spare time and how that will affect their home search.
What are the most popular new neighborhoods in Columbia? The Brooks, out on the east side of town, is very popular right now. Golfers like the close proximity to Old Hawthorne. Three newer condo developments to keep your eyes on are Vintage Falls (they’ve got a new plat opening up); Bristol Lake Villas, a brand-new development; and Smithton Crossing, which has built more condos recently because of the great demand. Nursery Heights, in the southwest part of town, is another new subdivision that’s really popular right now. They’ve kept the homes there at starter-home prices (low $200,000s), so young families can get into the schools that funnel in the southwest but won’t have to pay $300,000 for a house. There are also a couple of great newer ones up north. Somerset Village, near Battle High School, is right next to Lake of
the Woods Golf Course and the city swimming pool, so you get those amenities. Also up north, Tuscany Ridge and Arbor Pointe, both near the newer elementary school, are popular and affordable. That said, as a Realtor, we can’t tell buyers what neighborhood to move to or not move to, so it’s important to do your research.
What is one thing you wish all those in the market for a new home knew? A lot of people don’t understand that the listing agent works for the seller. When you call that listing agent thinking they should show you the house, you’re actually doing yourself a disservice. If you have your own agent, you’ll probably have a happier outcome. It’s not war, but it is negotiations, and you might in hindsight wish you had your own representation. As an agent, we can show buyers any house, whether or not it’s listed with our company. What’s important is that they have their own advocate.

Neighborhoods & Communities
In fact, four of the city’s neighborhoods are recognized as Historic Districts on the National Register of Historic Places. Perhaps not surprisingly, these neighborhoods are all concentrated near downtown and the University of Missouri: Downtown Columbia, East Campus Neighborhood, Francis Quadrangle and the North Ninth Street Historic District. Although many of the homes in these neighborhoods have already undergone extensive
CONTINUED
renovations, there are a number of fixer-uppers, along with rentals at various price points.
Wide-open Spaces Although large lots aren’t the norm within the city limits, there are a few Columbia neighborhoods that offer a bit more room to spread out. The Country Meadows neighborhood, established in 1988 in southwest Columbia, offers large lots, at a median home price of $323,000. Homes in Harpers Pointe,
also in the southwest, are built on three- to five-acre lots, with a median home price of $438,000.
Trail Access
With the Cosmo Nature Trail, Hinkson Creek Trail, MKT Nature and Fitness Trail and many more spread throughout the city, you’re never far from an opportunity to exercise or explore. The city’s trails are open to everyone, but some neighborhoods boast direct trail access. For instance, in the southwest, the Cascades neighborhood has its own lake and walking trail, and Chapel Hill Estates is located near Twin Lakes parks and trails.
Walkability/Bikeability Depending on your place of employment, many Columbia neighborhoods will likely require a car for the morning commute. But thanks to the city’s extensive network of bike trails and bike lanes, taking two wheels to work is a viable option from many of the city’s neighborhoods. The Grasslands, one of the oldest neighborhoods in Columbia, is sought after for its central location and easy access to downtown and the university. See pednet.org for more on the city’s most walkable, bikeable and accessible areas. l

If you have pets
Moving into a new home comes with a long to-do list. Follow this checklist and tips to help you stay organized.
Choose a new veterinarian in town, and secure a city license for any cats and dogs older than 3 months. You may apply for a city of Columbia animal license at a local veterinarian office, and you may purchase animal tags at the city Cashier’s Office located on the first floor of the historic Daniel Boone Building, 701 E. Broadway. You must provide proof of rabies vaccination. Note: Dogs are licensed for periods up to three years. Cats are normally licensed for one year.
Getting started
q Set up utilities (visit como.gov/utilities/ucs/ to start or transfer service online)
q Obtain a Change of Address form from the post office or complete online at usps.com
q Change your addresses on all your accounts (voter registration, driver’s license, tax forms, bank accounts, post office, etc.)
q Update your address for any online purchases you may regularly make, such as those via Amazon
q Open
a new bank account, but don’t close your old one until you move
q Notify your doctors and dentists, and request copies of records be sent to your new health care providers
q Select a pharmacy in Columbia and transfer prescriptions
q If you have kids, notify old and new schools, and transfer school records to new schools
Save moving receipts for tax-deductible expenses Expenses you incur while moving may be tax deductible. Before you move, create a folder to store receipts of your moving expenses, and check online or with your accountant about what you may deduct. Visit irs.gov/newsroom/ frequently-asked-questions-for-movingexpenses for online help in determining what expenses are eligible. 30

Take advantage of rebates available for energy efficiency A valuable step in moving into your new home is to evaluate potential efficiency upgrades. Utility rebates (see list that follows) through Columbia Water & Light and Boone Electric Cooperative encourage customers — both new homeowners and longtime residents — to make their homes more energy efficient. They help you save money when making energy-efficient home improvements by increasing the return on investment and decreasing the payback period. Not only that, but they also increase demand for energy-efficient technologies and products that help protect the environment, so over time, these technologies will decrease in price and become more affordable. Every rebate program has its own set of qualifications, guidelines and rebate amounts, so be sure to carefully review the procedures of each program, and don’t be afraid to call for an expert’s help if you have questions along the way. Keep in mind that most of the rebates mentioned below require a certified energy audit prior to the improvements to qualify. Columbia Water & Light * Rebates available for Home Performance with Energy Star energy-efficiency upgrades • Rebates available for qualifying air conditioners and heat pumps • Low-interest loans to help finance efficiency and solar projects • Up to 500/kW installed for rooftop solar Visit columbiapowerpartners.com for info. Boone Electric Cooperative • Incentives for Home Performance with Energy Star energyefficiency upgrades • $750 per ton for qualifying ground-source heat pumps • $300 for a qualifying electric dual-fuel system • Rebates for lighting upgrades for commercial accounts Visit booneelectric.coop for info. l

Winter Is Coming Prepare your home for the cooler weather ahead. nn BY EVAN HENNINGSEN
Missouri weather can be unpredictable, with sunshine and mid-70s one day and snow the next. To help ensure your home is safe and prepared for the cooler months ahead, consider these winterization tips from mid-Missouri experts. Winter is coming, but first, some fall cleaning is in order. Here’s what to tackle to get your home ready: 1. DRIVEWAYS
Missouri typically has more ice in the winter than other states due to high levels of humidity, so it’s wise to have kitty litter or de-icer on hand before the storm hits. But keep in mind that de-icer isn’t all good. In fact, it can be damaging to concrete, which is why experts recommend homeowners clean their concrete ahead of bad weather. Cleaning and sealing concrete driveways and sidewalks protects against salt and de-icers, which can cause cracking and ultimately pitting and disintegration. 2. WINDOWS
Cold temperatures mean bigger heating bills. Clean your windows thoroughly to allow more sunlight into your home, which improves natural heating.
3. ROOF
One of the biggest fall cleaning tips is to keep a weathered eye on your roof. Black streaks are a sure sign of mildew and algae, which can deteriorate your shingles — not ideal come the impending snow and ice. Experts at Presidential SoftWash suggest lowpressure cleaning instead of powerwashing when it’s time to cleanse any exterior surface of a house, including a roof. Soft-washing treats the root issue while gently using a more environmentally sustainable cleaning approach. Additionally, there are algae-repellent roofing options, which include certain metal varieties. Nick Allen, owner of Manor Roofing and Restoration Services, knows how damaging winter conditions can be and even helped develop a U.S.-patented steel shingle system that resists algae growth and helps homes endure the harsh winter months. 4. HVAC
Before turning up the heat, get your system checked by a qualified HVAC company — experts say it’s a lot easier to prevent HVAC issues than fix them. Have them check for problems such as possible carbon monoxide leaks
(aging furnaces are more prone to this ailment), which can lead to illness and sometimes death. Buying a carbon monoxide detector or new batteries for an old detector is a must.
QUICK TIPS • I nstall a whole-house humidifier for the winter. Air tends to be drier when the furnace runs, which can spur nose bleeds and other sinus issues. A whole-house humidifier addresses the dry air throughout all your living spaces rather than just one room. •T urn down the heat when you leave the house. Forgetting to do so can add up to hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars over the course of the winter. Many companies sell and install Wi-Fi-controlled thermostats, which can be controlled from your phone when you’re away. If that idea’s too pricey, try posting a reminder at the back door. l

Feel the Beat
Top Columbia Spots for Music, Dance and Self-Expression
nn BY JENNY O’DONLEY
Columbia boasts an abundance of sites where you can indulge your passion for musical performances. Whether you catch a great concert or watch a dance troupe in action, bust out your own moves or showcase your talents in a singalong, the CoMo beat goes on and on.
MUSIC Music lovers will find a variety of Columbia venues to enjoy a wide range of favorite genres. And for those who see music as an experience best enjoyed alongside other interests, take note of these key haunts whether you love food, nightlife, concerts … or all three.
For Foodies Downtown, Cafe Berlin and Broadway Brewery double as venues that bring in all types of musicians from solo acts to big bands. Although the kitchen isn’t open during concerts at Cafe Berlin, be sure to grab one of their signature waffle sandwiches for brunch and plan to return when the sun goes down for indie tunes and noteworthy drinks. At Broadway Brewery, Sundays equal brunch with bluegrass, and the last Monday of every month brings the Columbia Jazz Orchestra. Head over to west Columbia where Jazz, A Louisiana Kitchen cooks up authentic Southern cuisine often paired with live jazz, blues and rock.
On the south side of town sits Murry’s, known for excellent food and live jazz. The musical menu includes solo piano Monday through Thursday, a trio on Saturday nights, and Sunday shows featuring special entrees and the world’s top jazz artists as Murry’s continues its decades-long legacy in food and entertainment.
For Night Owls Eastside Tavern transforms into a karaoke bar on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays after 9 p.m. If you’re interested in taking the stage to sing one of the hundreds of classics offered, make sure you sign up as soon as possible — slots fill up quickly. If singing loudly and off-key isn’t your thing, the tavern brings in local comics on Tuesdays. Downtown on Eighth Street, the Social Room gives you a chance to dance under the giant disco ball at this arcade-nightclub-lounge-speakeasy hybrid. Bonus: You don’t have to worry about paying cover. The Social Room also offers a robust cocktail menu, updated seasonally and featuring some
locally sourced food — order online for curbside pickup if you decide to stay in but still want a taste.
For Concertgoers On Ninth Street, The Blue Note books acts that impress. The massive music destination once hosted the Red Hot Chili Peppers — enough said. Don’t miss this classic Columbia venue, established in 1980. Shows include both musical acts and comedy. As of press time, The Blue Note has canceled and rescheduled shows due to COVID; visit TheBlueNote.com for an up-to-date schedule. Rose Music Hall, created by the masterminds who run The Blue Note, focuses on local musicians. Music lovers here enjoy an indoor space with a full bar and stage, but outdoor events make the most of the location’s parklike setting in downtown Columbia. Down Broadway, in the heart of the District, Nash Vegas is a live country music hub. Open Friday and Saturday nights, Nash Vegas invites you to break out your cowboy boots and line dance to live country music. CONTINUED relocatingincolumbia.com

Columbia’s Drag Scenedom: Nclusion+ When Columbia’s Yin Yang Night Club closed the curtain on its final show in April 2020, the local LGBTQ community wasn’t ready to say goodbye to its outlet for entertainment and safe expression. The brainchild of seven business partners with a goal to create a sustainable LGBTQIA+ community club in Columbia, Nclusion+ fills that void, providing a safe space for LGBTQIA+ gatherings. Member support creates a sustainable source of revenue for the organization, enabling weekly drag shows, plus education and physical and mental health resources.
In a typical show, four performers perform three numbers in each round. Nclusion+ currently has about 45 drag performers on the roster, most from Columbia but some from as far away as Texas and Florida. Expect fabulous makeup and costumes and great entertainment. The shows provide performers an outlet to share their talent and a safe space to express themselves. Nclusion+ is a certified Safe Space organization. “This is a safe space to be who you are — whether LGBTQ or an ally,” says Plogger. Check the Nclusion+ website at NclusionPlus.com or follow the group on social media for the latest events (online or in-person) and opportunities to connect with and/or support Columbia’s LGBTQIA+ community. l PHOTOS BY NCLUSION+
“Drag shows are not exclusively drag,” says Anthony Plogger, one of the business partners and head of the
Nclusion+ education committee. “You’ll see gay chorus, LGBTQ improv, burlesque, musicians and vocalists.”

Ask someone to rank the most important things in their life, and almost universally, “family” is at the top of their list. The east side is where you’ll find big-box retailers and other national chains that draw shoppers from all over central Missouri. Broadway Marketplace, at the junction of U.S. 63 and Interstate 70, features Academy Sports + Outdoors, Hy-Vee supermarket, Lowe’s, Sam’s Club, Staples, a Walmart Supercenter and several fast-casual dining options. Just down the road is Broadway Shops, a complex of national, regional and local merchants such as GameStop, Massage Envy, Palen Music Center, Palm Beach Tan and Plato’s Closet. Cross over I-70 to shop The Home Depot. Drive a little farther north to indulge a variety of retail needs at Bass Pro Shops, Menards and Furniture Row.
WEST Some 40 years ago, the western edge of Columbia was rolling farmland, a bucolic buffer between the interstate and the smattering of businesses at the intersection of West Broadway and North Stadium. These days, you’d be hard-pressed to find a cow or a hay bale in this playground for the shop-till-you-drop crowd. The 90 tenants of Columbia Mall — anchored by Dillard’s, JCPenney and Target — offer everything from clothing to books, housewares to electronics, plus entertainment and dining. Next door, The Shoppes at Stadium features such national retailers as Bed Bath & Beyond, David’s Bridal, PetSmart, Old Navy, Shoe Carnival and Dick’s Sporting Goods. This section of Stadium Boulevard is lined with well-known retailers — Ashley HomeStore, Best Buy, Hobby Lobby and Marshalls among others. Crossroads West Shopping Center at the junction of Broadway and Stadium is home to Petco, Planet Fitness and Red Weir Athletic Supplies.
SOUTH Follow Providence Road south past Stadium Boulevard and you’ll find specialized retailers to suit any CoMo lifestyle. The intersection of
Providence and Nifong Boulevard is an epicenter of bustling commercial activity. Nifong Square boasts services from Peak Sport and Spine physical therapy, Ell & Company salon and Tiger Cleaners. Across Peachtree Drive, you’ll find Authority Gymnastics, The French Laundry & Alterations, Show Me Guitars and more. Farther south is A-1 Party & Event Rental and Big O Tires. Just past Rock Bridge High School, tap into various services for health care, veterinary medicine and landscaping, plus an artisan gift shop called Plume. Across Providence is Rock Bridge Shopping Center with Big Lots, HyVee and Joann Fabrics and Crafts. Head east on Nifong to check out Kohl’s department store and another Walmart Supercenter. Due south are several storage vendors, Orscheln Farm & Home and a range of automotive services. If your south CoMo tour routes you along Forum Boulevard, start at Forum Shopping Center. Look for retail enterprises such as Schnucks supermarket, pet favorite Treats Unleashed and the bargain hunter’s paradise Tuesday Morning. Catch a movie at Forum 8 or head south to find Clovers Natural Market and Songbird Station.
NORTH Columbia’s north side is the industrial heart of the city. Local factories situated primarily north of I-70 pump out all manner of goods for the entire country. Here you’ll find 3M, American Air Filter, Environmental Dynamics International, Honeywell, Kraft Heinz, Nanova Biomaterials Inc., Patric Chocolate, Quaker Oats, Schneider Electric Square D and Watlow Electric Manufacturing Co. Suppliers tend to gravitate to this side of town — including Bolivar Insulation, Con-Agg Companies, Crown Power & Equipment, Henderson Implement Co., MidCity Lumber and Midwest Block & Brick. There are automotive services, body shops and salvage yards aplenty on the north side, as well as recyclers, waste collectors and the city landfill. l relocatingincolumbia.com

Raise Up a Child nn BY JENNY O’DONLEY
Early education and child care in Columbia For working parents relocating to Columbia, finding a child care service that fits both the needs of your child and your family is crucial. Here are the three questions you should ask when evaluating options. 1. ARE YOU LICENSED? In Missouri, if a provider cares for more than four children and is of no relation to those children, he or she must be licensed, which ensures the service provided meets health and safety regulations. 2. WHAT ARE YOUR QUALIFICATIONS? Experience and education may give you insight into the child care provider’s professionalism, level of care and expertise. Ask for details about qualifications. 3. WHAT ACCREDITATION DO YOU HOLD? Missouri Accreditation (MOA) provides quality standards for programs serving children from birth to school age within the state of Missouri. Nationally, the National Association for the Education of Young Children and the National Association for Family Child Care are two of the largest associations that provide accreditation.

A Great Start: Parents as Teachers Supports Columbia Families To help kids reach their full potential, Columbia Public Schools’ Parents as Teachers (PAT) is a free parent education and family support program for qualifying families with children from age 0 to 5. PAT helps parents lay a strong foundation for children’s future success in school and life through: personal visits, which are facilitated by parent educators, specially trained in child development, who make visits to the family home on a regular basis to engage in discussions about child development and the family’s needs; group connections, which provide opportunities for parents and children to come together to learn more about child development, network with other families and observe their child with other children and practice parenting skills; annual screenings in health, hearing, vision and overall development, offered to each child; and the PAT resource network, through which parent educators can help link families to appropriate community agencies whenever appropriate. The importance of an excellent education is a staple of the Columbia community. The area offers a wealth of educational opportunities through public and private means. Students here excel in their classrooms and in their postsecondary education careers, whether they attend public or private school. Both systems equip students with the tools necessary to succeed — it’s just a matter of finding the right fit for your family and, most importantly, your child. Explore the key components of Columbia public and private schools below.
Columbia Public Schools Accredited with distinction by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, Columbia Public Schools is the fifth-largest district in the state and includes 21 elementary schools, seven middle schools, four high schools, a career education center and an early childhood learning center. The school district’s newest building is the recently completed John Warner Middle School, opening for the 2020-21 school year. The district is also renovating and completing an addition to Locust Street Expressive Arts Elementary School and will begin construction soon on a classroom addition to Rock Bridge Elementary School. In 2019-20, CPS boasted an enrollment of 19,052 students from preschool to grade 12 and a studentto-teacher ratio of 13:1. Nearly 90% of Columbia Public School students extend their education beyond high school and more than 75% attend a college or university.
E D U C AT I O N
Private Schools More than 4,000 students in Columbia receive their education through area private schools. Options include
Montessori programs, faith-based schools (such as Christian Fellowship School, Father Tolton Catholic High School and The Islamic School of Columbia-Missouri), college preparatory choices (such as Columbia Independent School) and more. Private education, with its smaller enrollment numbers, offers unique opportunities for individual growth and leadership development in a family environment. Kari Dowell, director of admissions and marketing at Columbia Independent School, says that small
class sizes are a key contributing factor to student success. “[Private school class sizes] are smaller than in public schools,” Dowell says, “and that allows the teachers to provide more individualized instruction to students.” Advocates note that private schools often have a close-knit atmosphere as teachers, students and families get to know each other well. The community they create is a supportive educational environment that encourages individual achievement and improves academic abilities. l PHOTOS BY COLUMBIA PUBLIC SCHOOLS
Student performance on the ACT and SAT exams exceed state and national averages. Of the 2,300 students taking advanced placement courses, 81.1% earn college credit. The average Columbia teacher holds a master’s degree and has 12½ years of professional experience. To learn more about Columbia Public Schools, visit cpsk12.org.

Quick, Urgent & Emergency Care Facilities
How do you know where to go?
nn BY JENNY O’DONLEY
Traditional health care is booming in Columbia, and there’s no shortage of primary care physicians and specialists to meet your needs. But what happens during evening hours, weekends or other times when your regular doctor isn’t available? That’s when quick and urgent care facilities come in. So how do you know where to go? Take a quick assessment of your injury or illness, and seek help accordingly. If it’s a severe or life-threatening emergency (such as chest pain, severe breathing problems, major bleeding or unexplained loss of consciousness), call 911 or head to the ER right away (see listing on page 73). But for minor health concerns or serious but not life-threatening issues, quick or urgent care are great options that not only provide the skilled medical attention you need but also help you avoid a long wait in the ER.
Quick Care Minor health issue but still need quick service? Choose quick care for fast, convenient care for common health issues when you aren’t able to visit your primary care physician. Staffed by nurse practitioners and physicians assistants, these facilities typically treat patients 24 months and older. Go here for sore throats, minor cuts and wounds, cold, cough and flu, etc.

Urgent Care More serious issue but not at emergency-room level? Urgent care is your best choice for immediate but not life-threatening
H E A LT H & W E L L N E S S
Quick Care? Urgent Care?
Emergency?
Ask Your Care Provider… Do you participate in my insurance plan? Just like when
choosing a primary care physician, make sure you check what insurance plans are covered before seeking treatment.
Do I need follow-up treatment/tests? This
information is not only important to you, but your regular doctor will likely also want to discuss next steps.
Remember Primary Care Urgent and quick care facilities have grown exponentially over the past decade, filling a void for individuals who can’t access their regular medical doctor on nights, weekends and holidays. But one of the biggest fallbacks of quick medical treatment is that it lacks continuity of care. At quick and urgent care facilities, the providers’ purpose is to offer quick, easy access to affordable health care only when your regular doctor isn’t available. A primary care physician knows your medical history and provides care accordingly. That’s why urgent care is a supplement to regular care, not a replacement.
Can you explain that again? If you don’t understand an aspect of the service or treatment plan (tests, medication, etc.), always ask for clarification.
Emergency Care
When will I get my results? You might need to call the clinic back to get results. Clarify this before leaving the facility.
Can I get everything in writing? Make sure you get
written documentation of your diagnosis, prescribed medications, instructions for follow-up treatment, the name of the facility and the doctor or nurse who treated you. This may be used for insurance purposes, as well as following up with your primary care doctor.

NMT gives therapists specific protocols that are researchbased to alleviate pain and dysfunction. “Our massage therapists are looking for physical root cause of dysfunction, so we tend to ask more questions and will work on areas like the abdominals or muscles related to breathing to uncover more of the contributing factors of dysfunction and pain,” owner Barb Duggan says. “We want people to experience more freedom of movement in their bodies.”

A health treatment rapidly growing in popularity across the United States, cryotherapy uses cold temperatures (-180 degrees F to -240 degrees F) to safely lower body temperature, quickly send blood, oxygen and nutrients to the skin, and in doing so reduce inflammation and pain and increasing collagen production. The four main health benefits are recovery, beauty, weight loss and overall health and wellness. Retired, Not Tired nn BY TIA KEENE
Columbia is filled with activities for those in their golden years. Columbia is a beautiful city that draws retirees to the area in droves. The city’s dynamic atmosphere can be a persuasive reason to retire here but if you need other motives, consider the plentiful shopping and dining opportunities as well as ample recreational prospects. With several golf courses, local artisan shops and galleries, and more than 100 restaurants to choose from, Columbia is a wonderful place to retire. Most importantly, the area offers economical living and accessible health care, in addition to a safe living environment. The best way to get to know Columbia is by getting involved in local organizations and recreational activities. Known as Collegetown, USA, the city is home to six college campuses offering an assortment of educational, cultural and recreational opportunities. The University of Missouri, Columbia College and Stephens College host countless activities, including athletic events, art exhibitions and public festivals. These festivals have volunteer positions that can often score you free access to the festival after you’ve done your part. You can explore volunteer options by working with the local Chamber of Commerce or visiting the city website at CoMo.gov/volunteer. Get an overview of all that Columbia has to offer its retired citizens through the city’s 50+ Program. Currently, limited inperson activities — bingo, painting group, knitting, and a bluegrass group — allow for social distancing during COVID-19 restrictions. For the foreseeable future, trips for 50+ Tours are not scheduled. The tours via motor coach offer travel opportunities for active individuals 50 and older. To learn more, call 573-874-7475 or

build community while promoting Christian education.
3. Connect with other parents Mothers of Preschoolers is an international organization for expecting moms or moms of infants to preschoolers who are looking for support, friendship and encouragement. Created in 1973 by eight women in Colorado, MOPS groups meet in more than 60 countries. In Columbia, these groups are hosted at First Presbyterian Church of Columbia and offered as virtual meetings, mixed virtual/in-person meetings and inperson meetings. Visit www.mops.org/ groups/columbia for more information. Additionally, churches might offer groups tailored specifically for women or men, where you can get to know other parents; research a church near you to see your options. Columbia’s Compass Evangelical Free Church, for example, offers men’s ministry groups via Zoom that “forge men of character, loving husbands and dads that disciple,” according to its website.
A lot of faith-based organizations offer events that are open to the entire community, regardless of whether you attend there for worship. Many churches offer vacation Bible school during the summer months, as well as day cares and preschools housed on their campuses. “The kids had a great time dancing the night away, as did the parents, who were able to drop their kids off and have an evening out,” McEntyre says. First Baptist also hosts six to seven online concerts per year through the Odyssey Chamber Music Series, which focuses on classical music. Other faithbased organizations bring in special guest speakers, host parents’ night out, trivia nights and more. Check out the organizations’ online calendars for a full listing of events.
5. Volunteer Serving others is a great way to connect with your new town, and many faith-based organizations facilitate volunteer opportunities in-house and throughout the community. Missouri United Methodist Church is looking for volunteers to help with daily business, such as answering phones, making photocopies and greeting newcomers. The church also promotes volunteering at 15 organizations including The Food Bank for Central & Northeast Missouri, CROP Hunger Walk, Granny’s House, Habitat for Humanity and Meals on Wheels. l relocatingincolumbia.com

For the active set, Rocheport is your passport to the Katy Trail, the rails-to-trails state park that traverses the entire width of Missouri along the old Missouri-Kansas-Texas railway. BOONVILLE (25 miles) Just a short hop down Interstate 70 is the inviting town of Boonville. Named for the sons of frontiersman Daniel Boone, the city sits just south of where Nathan and Daniel Morgan Boone operated a saltworks in the 19th century. Today’s Boonville is a history buff’s dream, adorned with architectural gems such as the Hotel Frederick, Thespian Hall and elegant homes of a bygone era. Pick up a map for a walking tour at the River, Rails, and Trails Museum in the Visitors Center at the Katy Trailhead. You’ll find access nearby to the Katy Trail, Katy Bridge and the historic Katy Depot, the only surviving Spanish mission-style depot on the Missouri-Kansas-Texas railroad. Feeling lucky? Try your hand at the Isle of Capri casino for gaming
and live entertainment. Rack up some “aww” moments at Warm Springs Ranch, the breeding farm of the Budweiser Clydesdales. Take the tour for a closer look at these gentle giants, chat with the horses’ handlers, check out the latest crop of baby Clydesdales and snap all the selfies you like. GoBoonville.com
