Once part of the Mississippian culture and home to the Mound Builders, the area now known as Columbia was first populated by the Osage and Missouri indigenous peoples. The Lewis and Clark Expedition passed by the area on the Missouri River in 1803. In 1806, Nathan and Daniel Morgan Boone discovered a salt lick 40 miles northwest of Columbia. The Booneslick Trail wound from Kentucky through St. Charles, Missouri, to the Boones’ saltworks. In 1818, a group of settlers, incorporated under the Smithton Land Co., established the village of Smithton less than a mile from current-day downtown Columbia with the purchase of more than 2,000 acres. Due to lack of water the settlers moved in 1821 across Flat Branch Creek to the plateau between Flat Branch and Hinkson creeks — in what is now the downtown district. They renamed the settlement Columbia.

North Star Real Estate

Building Mid-Missouri’s freshest real estate brokerage was a longtime dream of real estate brokers and business partners, Adam Curtis and Billy Dexheimer, but it didn’t happen overnight. Through intense education, business planning, and purchasing and designing a new space, Billy and Adam’s vision took more than a year to take shape. In January of 2024, North Star Real Estate opened its doors in the heart of Columbia. “We wanted to create something that elevated the real estate sales experience,” Adam said.

“We put our clients at the very center of everything we do. People come before profits; when you go the extra mile, when you show your clients how much you care about them and their dreams, the business grows on its own.”

While their brokerage may be new, Billy and Adam are far from newbies in the world of real estate. With over $100 million in sales and hundreds of happy clients, they know experience is something that many local buyers, sellers and investors are looking for. With an education and background in IT, Billy is excited about how the company’s technology can help clients have a better experience. “We use cutting-edge technology throughout the entire buying and selling process. From client advocacy to advertising our listings, everything we implement is at the forefront of the industry,” Billy added.

North Star Real Estate stands out in its dedication to the mid-Missouri community. One of the company’s core values is supporting other local businesses.

When considering who to trust for your next real estate transaction, consider North Star Real Estate to help guide you home.

"From the company merchandise to the art on our walls, to every bite of food at our launch party, we want to support this community that has generously supported us," Adam said. "We're happy to spend a bit more if it means we're helping other businesses in our community thrive,“ says Billy. “Mid-Missouri is home; I've raised my kids here, and I love this area.”

That’s not all- a portion of all the business’s proceeds goes back to various charity and advocacy organizations in the area. Since its founding, North Star has already planned events and fundraisers for various organizations, including Boys and Girls Club, The Missouri Disability Empowerment Foundation (MoDE), Mareck Dance, and The Trevor Project. Billy is the 2024 President-Elect for the Columbia Board of Realtors, a competitor on this year’s Dancing with Missouri Stars, and hosts an Emmy nominated TV show “American Dream TV” that features North Star Real Estate’s listings and local businesses. Adam serves on the Board of Directors for the MoDE Foundation and was elected to CBOR’s Board of Directors, Finance and MLS committees. “Being involved in all aspects of local real estate helps us serve our clients and better advocate for their needs,” Adam explained.

As North Star Real Estate focused on clients and community, the company quickly found the need to grow and that required finding the perfect REALTORS® who shared the values of the brand. “We want to be very careful and intentional about our growth, and working with dedicated agents who share our vision is a top priority,” Billy said. They appear to be well on their way, as talented local agents Jordan Barnes, Kayla Beasley, Trinity Green, Georgia Aslanidis and Elizabeth Facio joined North Star Real Estate this spring. “We have amazing agents, and together we are excited to bring a fresh perspective to mid-Missouri. We love what we do and we can’t wait for all to see what the future holds for North Star.”

Neighborhoods & Communities

Choosing a neighborhood in a vibrant city like Columbia, Missouri is an intricate art that involves considering more than just the physical structures of houses. It’s about finding a community that resonates with your lifestyle, preferences, and values. It's understanding that the streets outside your doorstep become the pathways to your everyday experiences.

Columbia shelters more than 400 distinct neighborhoods, and the perfect one for you is out there, waiting to be discovered. Whether you're drawn to the charm of a historical district, the fresh canvas of a new development, or the tranquility of serene trails, it’s essential to analyze the tapestry of options to find the patch of fabric that feels most like home. As you wade through the options, here are the key elements to consider in your quest to find the ideal Columbia neighborhood.

Contemporary Developments

Opting for a newly-established neighborhood affords you the opportunity to carve out your haven from the ground up. Customized living spaces, state-of-the-art infrastructure, and planned communities designed for convenience and connection are just a few attractions of Columbia's newest residential enclaves.

Neighborhoods with a Fascinating Past

For some, the greatest comfort lies in the arms of history. Columbia's historic neighborhoods, with their meticulously preserved architecture and stories that line the streets, offer a unique sense of place. For those who appreciate the architectural styles of bygone eras and the culture that underpins them, settling in one of the neighborhoods listed on the National Register of Historic Places is akin to becoming a curator of living history. These areas often come with community regulations aimed at preserving the historical charm, which, for many, is a most welcome commitment to maintain the area's character.

Trailside Living and Urban Access

Columbia is a city that cherishes its natural beauty and makes it accessible in its neighborhoods. Direct access to trail systems such as Cosmo Nature Trail, Hinkson Creek Trail, and MKT Nature and Fitness Trail is a coveted feature for residents who relish the outdoors. Choosing a neighborhood with proximity to these green corridors means integrating the serenity of nature into your daily life. The therapeutic benefits of morning jogs, evening walks, or weekend cycling are right at your doorstep.

Selecting a neighborhood in Columbia is more than a real estate transaction; it's the commencement of a new chapter. The city's patchwork of communities ensures that there's something for everyone, whether you seek the adventurous spirit of trailside living, the pastoral calm of spacious homesteads, or the cultural richness and community heritage found in historic districts.

Movers You Can Trust

What started as a college dream became a company that can assist in moving you into your dorm or from an apartment to your forever home. Levi Alldredge founded Tiger Moving in 2020 and since then, he’s grown into a team of professional packers and movers that tend to commercial and residential logistics - so you don’t have to.

If you’ve ever moved yourself, then you know the pain of sorting everything, trying to pack it correctly so nothing breaks, struggling to lift heavy objects or overfilled boxes, and then taking trip after trip to unload - or worse - to get more supplies from the store, wasting your precious time.

What makes moving more simple, enjoyable, and practical is to hire professional household movers like Tiger Moving. As “Tetris Experts” their team is trained in how to respect your belongings while they pack, ship, or store your items during a move. That’s right. For residents in the middle of a move without a place to put your stuff, Tiger Moving can arrange temporary storage solutions for a day- a week- a month- or longer! From loading the truck to unloading in a unit until they deliver it for you, the Tiger Moving team are your storage specialists, too.

With every move comes a load of new things in life, from turning on utilities to settling in and establishing the feng shui of your home decor. When boxes or broken down furniture pile up, Tiger Moving can even show up to remove the junk for you. Feeling at home in a new town can take a lot of thought and effort.

Tiger Moving encourages you to consider these factors (in the box) when selecting your movers, and use the New Home Checklist (page 17) to ensure a smoother move.

When Interviewing a Moving Company

New Home Checklist

Moving into a new home comes with a long to-do list. Follow this checklist to help you stay organized.

Getting Started

❑ Set up utilities (visit como.gov/utilities/ucs/ to start or transfer service online)

❑ Obtain a Change of Address form from the post office or complete online at usps.com

❑ Change your addresses on all your accounts (voter registration, driver’s license, tax forms, bank accounts, post office, etc.)

❑ Update your address for any online purchases you may regularly make, such as those via Amazon.com

❑ Open a new bank account, but don’t close your old one until you move

❑ Notify your doctors and dentists, and request copies of records be sent to your new health care providers

❑ Select a pharmacy in Columbia and transfer your prescriptions

Save moving receipts for tax-deductible expenses

Expenses you incur while moving may be tax deductible. Before you move, create a folder to store receipts of your moving expenses, and check online or with your accountant about what you may deduct. Visit irs.gov/newsroom/frequently-askedquestions-for-moving-expenses for online help in determining what expenses are eligible.

Make sure your new home is safe and secure with these steps:

• Change locks

• Install or reprogram garage door opener

• Test smoke detectors/carbon monoxide detectors

• Make sure there are fire extinguishers (recommended locations include the kitchen, laundry room, near sources of heat, on each floor or bedroom and the garage)

❑ If you have kids, notify old and new schools, and transfer school records to new schools

If you have pets

• Create emergency plans (fire escape, severe weather plans, intruder plans, etc.)

• Look over the main circuit breaker (aka the electricity shuto )

Choose a new veterinarian in town, and secure a city license for any cats and dogs older than 3 months. You may apply for a City of Columbia animal license at most local veterinarian o ces. You must provide proof of rabies vaccination. Note: Dogs are licensed for periods up to three years. Cats are normally licensed for one year. Take advantage of rebates available for energy e ciency

A valuable step in moving into your new home is to evaluate potential e ciency upgrades. Utility rebates (see list that follows) through Columbia Water & Light and Boone Electric Cooperative encourage customers — both new homeowners and longtime residents — to make their homes more energy e cient. They help you save money when making energy-e cient home improvements by increasing the return on investment and decreasing the payback period. Not only that, but they also increase demand for energy-e cient technologies and products that help protect the environment, so over time, these technologies will decrease in price and become more a ordable. Every rebate program has its own set of qualifications, guidelines and rebate amounts, so be sure to carefully review the procedures of each program, and don’t be afraid to call for an expert’s help if you have questions along the way. Keep in mind that most of the rebates mentioned below require a certified energy audit prior to the improvements to qualify.

Columbia Water & Light

• Rebates available for Home Performance with Energy Star energy-e ciency upgrades

• Rebates available for qualifying air conditioners and heat pumps

• Low-interest loans to help finance e ciency and solar projects

• Rebates for solar pv system Visit columbiapowerpartners.com for info. Boone Electric Cooperative

• Incentives for Home Performance with Energy Star energy-e ciency upgrades

• $750 per ton for qualifying ground-source heat pumps

• $300 for a qualifying electric dual-fuel system

Insuring a Connection to CoMo

Everyone’s “Welcome to Columbia” story is unique. When Columbia Shelter Insurance® agent Krista first came to Columbia to attend college, she chose the big MIZ(ZOU) and relocated from Rolla with her high school sweetheart, Curt Kippenberger. Little did she know that as they continued to fall deeper in love, they’d both fall deeply in love with the town.

Columbia bolsters a reputation as one of the best places to live, work and play in many surveys, yet it’s the people who contribute to that culture.

“Having great schools to raise a family in, seeing a growing business startup support system and enjoying the beautiful balance of parks to urban development, Columbia just immediately felt comfortable — felt like home,” Krista  Kippenberger says. “So we settled in, started a couple of businesses and do our best to contribute to the culture that kept us here after college.”

After making Columbia their home, the couple got involved in the community outside their two local small businesses. Curt spends his time helping the community through his wellness and health care practice, which  Krista also supported while discovering the thrill of being involved in the local Chamber of Commerce.

“As business owners, we want to support business owners because we see the struggles,” Krista says. “We advocate for everyone to be successful, and we love attending fun events. That’s just a couple of reasons why I love being a Chamber member and ambassador.”

Although Chamber events are one way to stay involved,  Krista takes another unique approach to keeping the “culture of Columbia alive” and dedicates her time to putting on the original Magic Tree Festival in Cherry Hill every year.

With her involvement, entrepreneurial spirit and the opportunity arising to take over a Shelter Insurance ® Agency,  Krista  knew she could help others protect their businesses, their families and their lives by getting involved as an insurance agent in June 2021.

Since then,  Krista has catered to the legacy of Shelter clients in her agency while serving more locals who relocate each year and have questions about new or existing coverage. When not involved in work or volunteerism,  Krista finds herself caring for their two girls, doing home remodeling, gardening and enjoying the parks around town.

As a new resident, if you have an interest in the local Chamber of Commerce, ACA Business Club, Women’s Network or supporting events and fundraisers around town, get to know Krista, and she’ll ensure you have all the information you need to know about living in the big little ol’ CoMo!

D.W. Cole’s

Return

to Columbia as Cole Properties Realty

In the heart of Missouri, where the rolling hills meet the serene landscape of Columbia, a real estate broker named D.W. Cole has embarked on a remarkable journey. In 2023, he returned to his roots in Columbia, bringing with him a wealth of experience, a passion for real estate, and a commitment to helping residents find their dream homes.

D.W. Cole's story is not just that of a successful real estate broker, but a tale woven with the fabric of family, hard work, and a deep connection to the vibrant communities of Kirksville, St. Louis, and Columbia. Born and raised in the charming city of Kirksville, D.W. Cole relocated to Columbia to raise a family. He worked in advertising and marketing here for over two decades, and spent many years exploring the picturesque neighborhoods and forming an unbreakable bond with this community.

After leaving for brief stints in St. Louis and Kirksville, he discovered his calling in real estate. But his love for Columbia, coupled with his astute business and marketing acumen, fueled his desire to help others find their place in Columbia, just as he had found his own.

Beyond his role as a broker, D.W. Cole is also a seasoned property investor with almost ten years of experience. With multiple properties in his portfolio across mid-Missouri, he understands the investment potential that the region holds. His keen eye for opportunities has not only benefited him but also enriched the local real estate landscape. With a vision to contribute even more to his beloved community, D. W. Cole decided to bring his real estate brokerage- Cole Properties Realty to Columbia.

As a real estate broker, D. W. Cole specializes in guiding residential buyers and sellers through the intricacies of the housing market. His approach is not just about closing deals but ensuring that families find a home that resonates with their dreams and fits their budget. To that end, D. W. Cole stands out among the sea of agents by offering his clients a special 4% commission rate that undercuts the competition. Moreover, he accentuates this deal and makes it better by adding his “90-Day Guarantee” to any home listing. While some exclusions and details apply to his offer, his commitment to honesty and transparency have earned his clients’ trust and admiration. This is not just a business venture for him; it’s a way to give back to the place that has shaped his life and the lives of his sons and now two grandsons.

In an era where real estate sometimes feels impersonal, D. W. Cole stands out as a beacon of warmth and integrity. His story is one of resilience, family values, and a commitment to creating relationships that settle into homes they love, not just houses they can buy. To new or prospective residents of Columbia, D. W. Cole is more than a real estate broker; he is ready to guide his clients through the journey of finding a place where they can build their dreams and make lasting memories. As a passionate advocate for the city’s growth and prosperity, his story is a testament to the enduring spirit of Columbia, and his presence promises a future where more families can call this enchanting city their home. Take time while you’re in town and get to know D.W. Cole and Cole Properties Realty.

A Great Start: Parents as Teachers Supports Columbia Families

To help kids reach their full potential, Columbia Public Schools’ Parents as Teachers (PAT) is a free parent education and family support program for families with children from prenatal to age 5. PAT helps parents lay a strong foundation for children’s future success in school and life through: personal visits, which are facilitated by parent educators, specially trained in child development, who engage in discussions about child development and the family’s needs; group connections, which provide opportunities for parents and children to come together to learn more about child development, network with other families and observe their child with other children; annual screenings in health, hearing, vision and overall development, offered to every child; and resource network, through which parent educators can help link families to appropriate community resources whenever appropriate. Visit cpsk12.org/pat for more information. For questions and to fill out an online enrollment form. For questions, please call 573-214-3955

Columbia Public Schools offers a developmentally appropriate education through which young children actively build their potential in a positive, nurturing, culturally diverse school family environment. Preschool is a federally funded program providing services to children with developmental needs, ages 3 to 5 (non-kindergarten) years of age. Services are provided at no cost to eligible children. Eligibility is determined through a developmental screening process.

The Columbia Public Schools

Preschool program serves more than 600 children, with 28 classrooms located in elementary and high schools throughout the Columbia Public School District. Half-day and full-day options are available. This program is designed to prepare children for successful school entry. Active family involvement is required to help children achieve this success. An early childhood teacher and instructional assistant plan age- appropriate learning experiences to promote development in literacy, communication skills, decision- making, and problem-solving skills. Teachers follow the High Scope teaching curriculum and a variety of other teaching resources to meet the developmental needs of each child.

Excellent Schools

Columbia Public Schools is the fifth largest district in the state. It includes 21 elementary schools, seven middle schools, four high schools and the Columbia Area Career Center, as well as an early childhood program with an enrollment of 18,800 students.

The school district is accredited by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, citing such educational advantages as:

• Comprehensive curriculum and services at all grade levels, including preschool and adult

• Exceptional programs for at-risk students and students with special needs

• Extensive depth and breadth in middle school and high school course offerings

• Award-winning career education programs designed for all students

• Successful community partnerships and volunteer programs

• Significant emphasis on staff development and school improvement efforts

Columbia Public Schools' students excel in the classroom and in their post-secondary education, careers, and beyond. Seventy percent of Columbia students extend their education beyond high school. Ten percent achieve industry credentials making them ready to enter the workforce in skilled jobs. More than 30 percent of Columbia graduates earn the College Preparatory Studies Certificate.

Student performance on the ACT and SAT exams exceed state and national averages. Additionally, of the 1,100 students taking advanced placement courses, nearly 80 percent earn college credit. Another nearly 40 percent of high students earn dual college credit. Additionally, 48 students graduated from high school with both a high school diploma and an associate’s degree through the district’s Early College program in partnership with Moberly Area Community College.

Our district's teachers represent the primary reason Columbia's schools and students are so successful. The average Columbia teacher holds a master's degree, has 12 years of professional experience, and stays in the district a good many years.

Investing in your child's development is paramount to their future success. For that reason and many more, parents in Columbia prioritize getting the best early childhood education possible by enrolling in Preschool programs with organizations such as Academy of Early Childhood Learning. The Academy team understands the challenges parents face in balancing work and childcare. Therefore, the institution strives to create a nurturing environment resembling a second home for your little ones.

The commitment to providing top-notch care and education for children is emphasized by Executive Director and Owner, Abbie Perry. She states, "At Academy, we prioritize the well-being and growth of each child. Our dedicated staff treats every student with kindness, respect, and love, helping them reach important developmental milestones in a safe and secure environment."

The facility transcends the conventional definition of a preschool, resembling a castle where children are surrounded by caring individuals dedicated to their success. The Academy experience, with experienced teachers, state-of-the-art facilities, and a curriculum focused on social-emotional learning, sets the standard for early childhood education.

Given the high demand for quality childcare, planning ahead is essential. Families are encouraged to inquire about enrollment early and schedule a tour to secure a spot on the waiting list. Whether expecting a new addition to the family or seeking summer care for a school-aged child, Academy aspires to be your child’s home-away-from-home.

For older children in the age group of 5-12, the academy's STEAM-based summer program offers a fun and educational experience centered around Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics. Early registration is recommended due to limited seats available.

Family involvement is integral to Academy's approach, the team welcomes parents to participate in special events and performances to foster a sense of community and connection.

Individuals passionate about working with children, and those possessing childcare experience, are encouraged to apply to join the teaching team. Academy is always on the lookout for exceptional individuals who share the commitment to providing unparallelled education and care.

Parents are urged to invest in their child's future and provide them with the best possible start at Academy of Early Childhood Learning, where the castle awaits, ready to inspire and empower the next generation of learners.

Welcome to Columbia!

Restoring Homeostasis and Bringing Balance to the Body

Chiropractic physician and founder of Compass Chiropractic and Wellness LLC, Dr. Ashley Emel, takes pride in the startup and success of her Columbia business.

“We chose Columbia as a business location because it is close to family, and we (my husband and I) were excited about the opportunity Columbia would bring being a ‘big little town,’” Emel says. “We have found the community is very like-minded when it comes to wellness, and we are proud to call it our home.”

Compass Chiropractic offers a variety of services including chiropractic adjustments, interferential electrotherapy, cold laser therapy, massage therapy, acupuncture, decompression therapy and nutritional counseling. Emel, Dr. Jennifer Sutherland and their team focus on providing individualized care to each of their patients by considering their unique needs and goals.

The clinic emphasizes the importance of patient education as Emel and Sutherland work with their patients to develop strategies for improving their overall health and wellness. Compass Chiropractic and Wellness aims to provide a welcoming and comfortable environment for all patients, with an overall goal of wellness. Intervention is always to restore homeostasis, or balance to the body, not to relieve symptoms or treat disease.

Chiropractic care for moms and babies is an integral part of the Compass Chiropractic services. As a charismatic prenatal and women’s health specialist whose passion is helping families enjoy their journey without pain and stress, Emel provides care to babies by giving them proper alignment to reduce colic, reflux, poor sleep, help breastfeeding issues such as proper latch and more.

In addition to women, the team also focuses on men through the treatment of chiropractic care, nutritional health and physiotherapy in order to achieve realignment and nutritional balance so they can perform at their optimal level.

Emel says she loves being a part of the Columbia community.

“There are many connections and familiar faces — no matter where you go, there is someone you know,” she says. “Columbia is the perfect size and has a lot of events, shopping, outdoor trails and small businesses to support. Columbia has a lot to offer when it comes to activities for kids, too. Both of my children participate in local sports and activities here in Columbia.”

Providing a few tips for those relocating to Columbia, first Emel suggests finding small, local businesses to support.  “The locally owned shops and restaurants have the best clothes, food and opportunities,” she says. “All Columbians have their favorites; it is easy to discover — just ask any local to guide you in the right direction.”

Additionally, when making a new city your home, Emel emphasizes the importance of finding the right chiropractor for you.

“Naturally, I would tell you to pick Compass Chiropractic and Wellness,” she says. “We truly have the best doctors and team. But most importantly, decide what you need, and find a chiropractor that supports that need. Look at their websites and see if they adjust with your preferred technique. Make sure they treat the issue you have. We have so many phenomenal chiropractors in Columbia — I am sure you will find the one that fits your needs best.”

The “Little Bit Different” Jewelry Store

Jewelry is more than decoration. It reflects who you are and what you value. It makes you feel special. A deep understanding of these truths is what makes Tucker’s, The Jewelry Architects, stand out. “We are the last of the folks that actually make jewelry in store, restore jewelry in store and repair jewelry in store,” Robert Tucker says. “We make our jewelry and put it in the cases for sale.

“Instead of walking into a traditional glitzy retail reseller of mass-produced items, they are in the midst of a working shop,” Tucker says. “We are the highest skilled people in our industry that do what we do very well. Clients get to speak with the makers and repairers of the jewelry firsthand.”

“We turned the conventional retail jewelry store inside out by placing us in front of clients to see us work,” he adds. “We have no sales team. All we have are bench jewelers. This way, clients can speak to the folks actually doing the work — and not be sold something  they don’t  need or want.”

“Bench jewelers” might be a bit modest. Although Tucker refers to his team as a “band of weirdos,” they are truly master jewelers, a title that comes only from decades of continual practice to fine-tune every aspect of their craft.

Whether repairing an heirloom, updating a vintage piece or creating a custom item, these masters blend your vision and their imagination into something yours and yours alone. It sounds a little like magic, but it’s actually something seemingly rarer these days — a focus on you.

“I shut up,” Tucker says. “Then I listen to what they want and expect out of the piece of jewelry to be made. I’m not  interested in selling them something pre-made  from a showcase.  I am interested in creating  a new (to them) heirloom piece. The ideas must come from our clients. Sometimes they need a little inspiration, and there I can help spur that along to help get their creative ideas flowing.”

Even the shop itself is designed more for creativity than commerce, with a tiny showroom and 80% of the 2,000-square-foot space dedicated to the fashioning of jewelry.

It may sound cliché, but at Tucker’s, caring is at the center. They care about listening to their clients and making their visions real, and they care about their team and their families and their well-being. And they care about making the best jewelry.

“Occasionally we are not the right fit for some folks that don’t care about their own jewelry, but for those that do care, we are the right place,” Tucker says.   While the team has more than 75 years of combined experience, the air inside Tucker’s remains approachable, casual, yet refined, and driven by experts that “give it to you straight.” Moreover, the friends, families and customers that come through the doors are constant reminders to the team that everyone has a story, everyone has a reason to give a “unique yet affordable” gift and everyone is welcome at Tucker’s, The Jewelry Architects.

When Michael LaFrieda, chief operating officer for Shangri-La, begins to talk about cannabis, he does so with an encyclopedic knowledge of the industry. He throws out words like terpenes, limonene, THC, CBD, topicals, tinctures and oils at a rapid-fire pace.

The terminology is extensive, and, for many, there are a lot of myths, misconceptions and unknowns where both medical and recreational marijuana are concerned. LaFrieda wants to change that.

“We want to educate the community,” LaFrieda says. “We want to be a community partner, to educate patients and recreational users about marijuana usage, its benefits and uses.”

The information surrounding marijuana, the regulations and the commercial aspects of it are not only immense, but often also confusing. Because the recreational use of marijuana is still new to Missouri — with dispensaries selling their first products for recreation in February 2023 — many are still unfamiliar.

LaFrieda is a former law enforcement official with more than 25 years of experience in security. This background, though unusual for a marijuana dispensary, is beneficial for Shangri-La.

Regulations and safety

There are many legal requirements placed on everyone involved in the marijuana industry. When entering the dispensary, you must check in before entering. All products are behind locked doors, and security is a high priority.

“Beyond safety and security in our locations,” LaFrieda says, “there are checks throughout the manufacturing process. Lab tests occur after cultivation, before manufacturing and again after the manufacturing process but before it’s available in dispensaries.”

Being a community partner

As the owners and staff at Shangri-La continue working to educate the public about the marijuana industry, they know that sometimes the biggest hurdle is getting people to come to the dispensary. At their northeast location, they offer electric vehicle charging stations for public use, have a gathering space and a marijuana museum of sorts that showcases all things cannabis.

“We want to be a gathering place for people,” LaFrieda says. “We are a true community partner, ready to educate Missourians about our industry.”
