History Once part of the Mississippian culture and home to the Mound Builders, the area now known as Columbia was first populated by Osage and Missouri Indians. The Lewis and Clark Expedition passed by the area on the Missouri River in 1803. In 1806, Nathan and Daniel Morgan Boone discovered a salt lick 40 miles northwest of Columbia. The Booneslick Trail wound from Kentucky through St. Charles, Missouri, to the Boones’ saltworks. In 1818 a group of settlers, incorporated under the Smithton Land Co., established the village of Smithton less than a mile from current-day downtown Columbia with the purchase of more than 2,000 acres. Due to lack of water, the settlers moved in 1821 across Flat Branch Creek to the plateau between Flat Branch and Hinkson creeks — in what is now the downtown district. They renamed the settlement Columbia. l 10

When they sign up for City of Columbia utilities, new residents moving to Columbia will automatically receive a starter pack of refuse and recycling bags, bearing the official City of Columbia logo, which must be used for all curbside collection. Vouchers will be sent via mail within two weeks and can be redeemed at most local grocery stores for additional official bags. If you expected to receive a voucher and did not, please contact 573-874-CITY (2489).
air conditioner, trash compactor, conventional oven — will be picked up on your regular collection day. Call 573-874-CITY at least 24 hours before, or submit your request online at least 48 hours before your regular trash day. The appliance will need to be curbside by 7:30 a.m., and an additional fee will be added to your monthly utility bill.
• Columbia uses a dual-stream recycle system, which means “Fiber” (paper, cardboard, newspaper) and “Containers” (plastic No. 1 to 7, glass, aluminum) are collected separately. For curbside customers, containers must be placed in the blue bags, while fibers need to be broken down and placed in a paper bag or box. Piles should be clearly separated at the curb. • Items such as demolition debris, automotive parts, hazardous materials, whole tires and felled trees cannot be collected with regular refuse. A map of Columbia’s 11 recycling drop-off locations can be found at CoMo.gov/ utilities/solidwaste. Please do not deposit plastic shopping bags in the drop-off containers. • To arrange a free pickup of oversized items, call the Contact Center or complete the online request form at least 48 hours prior to your scheduled collection day. This includes bulky items such as furniture and carpet (cut in lengths of 4 feet and in rolls not to exceed 2 feet in diameter). For more information, call 573-874-CITY(2489). • Major appliances — washer, dryer, range, freezer, dehumidifier, stove, dishwasher, refrigerator, water heater,
• When possible, leaves, grass, twigs and small branches should be dropped off at a yard waste site. Alternatively, they may be placed in a bag by the curb on your regular collection day and taken to the landfill. • Limbs must be bundled and should not exceed 4 feet in length, 2 feet in diameter and 50 pounds per bundle.
Yard Waste Collection
Household Hazardous Waste Drop-off • Columbia residents may take their household hazardous waste products to the Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Collection Facility at 1313 Lakeview. • The facility is only open on the first and third Saturdays April through November, 8 a.m. to noon. • No hazardous products are collected curbside. • If your paint can is empty or the paint is completely dry, you can throw it away. To dry any remaining paint, leave the lid off for a couple of days, or use kitty litter to absorb the excess paint. Then throw the can away.
Questions about solid waste or recycling? Call the city of Columbia at 573-874-CITY(2489). Unsure of what recycling goes where or when to leave materials for curbside pickup? Download the COMO Recycle and Trash app to see directions on how to properly dispose of certain items. Enter your address to receive reminders the day prior to pickup, including any holiday schedule adjustments. 12

Downtown Columbia has a vital and growing business district, and with Stephens College, Columbia College and the University of Missouri outlining downtown, there is limited parking. The Municipal Parking Utility maintains all parking garages, surface lots and street meters.
Parking Garages There are six multilevel parking garages in downtown Columbia. The six facilities have a total of 2,300 parking spaces. Parking garages are made up of hourly, permit and reserved spaces. The hourly spaces at Seventh and Walnut currently use a ticket and attendant system. The remaining parking garages utilize pay machines that use a payment-in-advance concept, with the exception of Eighth and Cherry and Short Street, which have parking meters at each hourly space. The payment machines are located at the facility exits. Patrons are required to take note of their parking space as they park and then pay the machine for the space and anticipated period they will be parked there.
PARKMOBILE APP Easy to download, go to Parkmobile.com or scan the QR code on any Parkmobileenabled meter, download the app, register and begin paying for parking via the app. All downtown meters accept payment via the Parkmobile app. Each Parkmobile-enabled meter will have a bright green sticker with a unique fourdigit parking zone number. Meeting or appointment runs longer than expected? With the Parkmobile app you can add time to the meter, up to the maximum allowed, remotely from your smartphone. And you can set reminders so that you are notified before your meter expires.
NEW COMO PARK CARDS CoMo Park Cards are the new reloadable parking payment cards and are accepted by all downtown meters. CoMo Park Cards can be obtained and reloaded at the Public Works department office on the third floor of City Hall.

Because of these roadways, Columbia is one of the most accessible cities in Missouri. • I-70 travels straight through Columbia and heads west toward Boonville and Kansas City and east toward Kingdom City and St. Louis.

Selecting the right place to live is one thing — it’s a big decision. Selecting the right gift to give someone can feel pretty close to the same magnitude as selecting where to live. While some might enjoy window shopping and traveling from location to location to hunt down the perfect gift that’s “unique yet affordable,” in Columbia there’s a special place where locals go to make that selection process easier. Not only does a visit to Tucker’s – the Jewelry Architects make finding the right gift easier, but it also makes it more likely that the gift will be cherished and passed down through generations of family members.
remodeled historic homes around town and catered to Columbia’s jewelry needs at every opportunity through a long-standing business that people trust.
At Tucker’s, the team has had a lifetime worth of experience designing, fixing and appraising jewelry, watches, stones and more. Although Lee, Dan, Randy and Robert have dedicated their lives to becoming experts in their industry, each has a focus, each has a story, and each of them knows that when you come into Tucker’s, you have a story, too.
One of the other iconic faces and names on the Tucker’s team is Lee. Lee has made a career as a silversmith and knows how to work with more than just silver in an expert-level manner. Although we may know him for his history in metalwork, he is no novice when it comes to custom work, cleaning, repairing or brokering jewelry.
Originally from St. Louis, Robert Tucker found his passion and entrepreneurial fervor at a young age working alongside his stepfather. That bonding led to Robert understanding the value of hard work, being creative and cordial and drove his mind into the world of architecture. Although some of his professional career was spent in that field, Robert is a jewelry connoisseur and eventually launched Tucker’s in the mid-1990s. His personal life solidified his affinity for Columbia when he met Deb, who became his wife, here and they decided to make Columbia their home. Now, some 30 years later, Robert and Deb (an English teacher) have raised a family,
Inside Tucker’s – the Jewelry Architects, you’ll meet an extraordinary watch master named Randy. A collector, a careful tinkerer and a zealous consumer of all things watchmaking over the centuries is just part of what makes Randy so superb at selecting your next wristwatch, pocket watch, desk clock, grandfather clock or other ticking apparatus. He offers appraisals, repairs and procurement as well.
While the team has more than 100 years of combined experience, the air inside Tucker’s remains approachable, casual yet refined and driven by experts that “give it to you straight.” Moreover, the friends, families and customers that come through the doors are constant reminders to the team that everyone has a story, everyone has a reason to give a “unique yet affordable” gift and everyone is welcome at Tucker’s – the Jewelry Architects.

With 90+ neighborhoods in Columbia that vary by location, walkability, schools and more, there’s a lot more that goes into finding a place to call home than choosing the perfect house. From historic charm to trail access to modern and unique amenities, Columbia neighborhoods have a lot to offer, all over the map. In search of the perfect neighborhood? Here are some basics — beyond bedrooms and square footage — to keep in mind: New Construction Construction in Columbia is booming all around the city. The Brookside Square, Monterey Hills and Willow Falls neighborhoods in northwest Columbia; Bay Hills, Bristol Lake, Old Hawthorne and Vineyards in the southeast; and Barcus Ridge, Deerfield, The Gates, Oak Park, Parkside Estates and Thornbrook in the southwest all have lots available, many with neighborhood amenities such as pools, clubhouses and access to nearby recreation. It’s a Seller’s Market in Columbia “Homes currently on the market are inundated with showings and offers,” says Realtor Denise Payne. “And many people are building because they can’t find something they like.” Prices for rentals are also up, making purchasing a home often more attractive than renting. So if you don’t want to miss out on the property you want, Payne recommends being prepared to make a decision quickly. Have your loan approval letter in hand, and be ready to pull the trigger. For remote buyers, that can mean committing to buying a home before seeing it in person. Payne says she has used FaceTime to show houses to remote buyers. “I had one couple who lived three hours away. The first time they saw their new house in person was at the inspection,” she says.

Choosing new construction means finding the right spot and having the opportunity to tailor the home to your needs.
“We couldn’t have done it without Denise,” Lisa adds. “She’s awesome! She even set us up with our babysitter.”
Realtor Denise Payne had just the right spot in mind when physicians David and Lisa Lemons contacted her in 2019 about a new home for them and their young son. The Lemonses were looking to relocate from Northern California to Columbia, where David, a Jefferson City native, had attended the University of Missouri. Payne steered the couple to Patrick Wells, owner of Dynamic Builders, who built the Lemons family home next door to his in Steeplechase Estates.
A Piece of History
Building a home during the COVID-19 pandemic was not without its challenges, Lisa says. “We had to choose all of our finishes online,” she says. “It’s hard to estimate fit without actually measuring things, and colors are not always exactly what you see on your computer screen. But it all worked out, and we love it here.” The Lemonses moved into their new home in July 2020. They’re enjoying the city’s parks and trails system and looking forward to their son starting kindergarten next fall. The welcoming openness among Columbians has made it easy to meet people in their new neighborhood, Lisa says.
If it’s charm and history you’re looking for, Columbia has plenty to fit the bill. In fact, four of the city’s neighborhoods are recognized as Historic Districts on the National Register of Historic Places. Perhaps not surprisingly, these neighborhoods are all concentrated near downtown and the University of Missouri: Downtown Columbia, East Campus Neighborhood, Francis Quadrangle and the North Ninth Street Historic District. Although many of the homes in these neighborhoods have already undergone extensive renovations, there are a number of fixer-uppers, along with rentals at various price points.
Wide-open Spaces Although large lots aren’t the norm within the city limits, there are a few Columbia neighborhoods that offer a bit more room to spread out. The Country Meadows neighborhood, established in 1988 in southwest Columbia, offers large lots, at a median home price of $323,000. Homes in Harpers Pointe, also in the southwest, are built on threeto five-acre lots, with a median home price of $438,000. CONTINUED

Location, Location, Location COLUMBIA REALTOR DENISE PAYNE SHARES HER APPROACH TO HELPING BUYERS FIND THE RIGHT NEIGHBORHOOD. How do you help newcomers know where to start in finding a home in the right location? We really take it on a case-by-case basis according to what’s best for the individual. Sometimes it will be based on where their job is and how long of a commute they want to have. If they have children, it might be based on what school they’d like their kids to attend. Maybe they’re avid bicyclists, and they’d like to be near a trailhead. We like to sit down and have those conversations ahead of time, whether in person or by phone, to see what part of the area is best for them. Then we try to limit the homes based on the area of town that will make them happy, so it’s customized to their needs.
What should newcomers know about finding a home in Columbia? I always like to start by telling them about the different features Columbia has to offer. I give them a community tour where we go downtown, to Cosmo Park, to Stephens Lake to help them see all the different aspects of the city. It only takes about an hour and
26
R E LO C AT I N G I N C O LU M B I A
a half to go through the whole town, but it’s so helpful for getting a feel for what appeals to them, what they like to do in their spare time and how that will affect their home search.
What are the most popular new neighborhoods in Columbia? The Brooks, out on the east side of town, is very popular right now. Golfers like the close proximity to Old Hawthorne. Three newer condo developments to keep your eyes on are Vintage Falls (they’ve got a new plat opening up); Bristol Lake Villas, a brand-new development; and Smithton Crossing, which has built more condos recently because of the great demand. Nursery Heights, in the southwest part of town, is another new subdivision that’s really popular right now. They’ve kept the homes there at starter-home prices (low $200,000s), so young families can get into the schools that funnel in the southwest but won’t have to pay $300,000 for a house. There are also a couple of great newer ones up north. Somerset Village, near Battle High School, is right next to Lake of
the Woods Golf Course and the city swimming pool, so you get those amenities. Also up north, Tuscany Ridge and Arbor Pointe, both near the newer elementary school, are popular and affordable. That said, as a Realtor, we can’t tell buyers what neighborhood to move to or not move to, so it’s important to do your research.
What is one thing you wish all those in the market for a new home knew? A lot of people don’t understand that the listing agent works for the seller. When you call that listing agent thinking they should show you the house, you’re actually doing yourself a disservice. If you have your own agent, you’ll probably have a happier outcome. It’s not war, but it is negotiations, and you might in hindsight wish you had your own representation. As an agent, we can show buyers any house, whether or not it’s listed with our company. What’s important is that they have their own advocate.

Trail Access With the Cosmo Nature Trail, Hinkson Creek Trail, MKT Nature and Fitness Trail and many more spread throughout the city, you’re never far from an opportunity to exercise or explore. The city’s trails are open to everyone, but some neighborhoods boast direct trail access. For instance, in the southwest, the Cascades neighborhood has its own lake and walking trail, and Chapel Hill Estates is located near Twin Lakes parks and trails.
Walkability/Bikeability Depending on your place of employment, many Columbia neighborhoods will likely require a car for the morning commute. But thanks to the city’s extensive network of bike trails and bike lanes, taking two wheels to work is a viable option from many of the city’s neighborhoods. The Grasslands, one of the oldest neighborhoods in Columbia, is sought after for its central location and easy access to downtown and the university. See pednet.org for more on the city’s most walkable, bikeable and accessible areas. l

New Home Checklist nn BY JENNA ALLEN & SCOTT SCHNELLE
Moving into a new home comes with a long to-do list. Follow this checklist and tips to help you stay organized. Getting started
q Set up utilities (visit como.gov/utilities/ucs/ to start or transfer service online)
q Obtain a Change of Address form from the post office or complete online at usps.com
q Change your addresses on all your accounts (voter registration, driver’s license, tax forms, bank accounts, post office, etc.)
q Update your address for any online purchases you may regularly make, such as those via Amazon
q Open
a new bank account, but don’t close your old one until you move
q Notify your doctors and dentists, and request copies of records be sent to your new health care providers
q Select a pharmacy in Columbia and transfer prescriptions
q If you have kids, notify old and new schools, and transfer school records to new schools
Save moving receipts for tax-deductible expenses Expenses you incur while moving may be tax deductible. Before you move, create a folder to store receipts of your moving expenses, and check online or with your accountant about what you may deduct. Visit irs.gov/newsroom/ frequently-asked-questions-for-movingexpenses for online help in determining what expenses are eligible. 30

Make your new home safe and secure with these steps: • Change locks • Install or reprogram garage door opener • Test smoke detectors/carbon monoxide detectors • Make sure there are fire extinguishers (recommended locations include the kitchen, laundry room, near sources of heat, on each floor or bedroom and the garage) • Create emergency plans (fire escape, severe weather plans, intruder plans, etc.) • Look over the main circuit breaker (aka the electricity shutoff) • Find water and gas shutoffs
If you have pets Choose a new veterinarian in town, and secure a city license for any cats and dogs older than 3 months. You may apply for a city of Columbia animal license at most local veterinarian offices. You must provide proof of rabies vaccination. Note: Dogs are licensed for periods up to three years. Cats are normally licensed for one year.
Take advantage of rebates available for energy efficiency A valuable step in moving into your new home is to evaluate potential efficiency upgrades. Utility rebates (see list that follows) through Columbia Water & Light and Boone Electric Cooperative encourage customers — both new homeowners and longtime residents — to make their homes more energy efficient. They help you save money when making energy-efficient home improvements by increasing the return on investment and decreasing the payback period. Not only that, but they also increase demand for energy-efficient technologies and products that help protect the environment, so over time, these technologies will decrease in price and become more affordable. Every rebate program has its own set of qualifications, guidelines and rebate amounts, so be sure to carefully review the procedures of each program, and don’t be afraid to call for an expert’s help if you have questions along the way. Keep in mind that most of the rebates mentioned below require a certified energy audit prior to the improvements to qualify. Columbia Water & Light • Rebates available for Home Performance with Energy Star energy-efficiency upgrades • Rebates available for qualifying air conditioners and heat pumps • Low-interest loans to help finance efficiency and solar projects • Rebates for solar pv solar system Visit columbiapowerpartners.com for info. Boone Electric Cooperative • Incentives for Home Performance with Energy Star energyefficiency upgrades • $750 per ton for qualifying ground-source heat pumps • $300 for a qualifying electric dual-fuel system • Rebates for lighting upgrades to existing buildings for commercial accounts Visit booneelectric.coop for info. l

More than 40 years serving Missouri homes and businesses.
Columbia is filled with skilled contractors and professional service providers that you should get to know when you relocate and settle down. Some of the companies that exist in CoMo end up servicing and solving problems for residential or commercial customers outside of the city or even region. One such company that has settled locally but has grown regionally and beyond is Scott Electric. While most homeowners know Adam Scott and his team for doing small jobs like: • changing out lighting fixtures • replacing noisy bathroom or ceiling fans • updating wall sockets or electrical panels to code • installing security or surveillance cameras • preventing electrification of swimmers and dock owners and more That’s just a general short list of what inspires and encourages folks to call their team back time and time again.
Yet, it’s been the 40+ years serving Missouri that has fostered trust, referrals, and projects that have pulled this team out of Columbia and to major cities to work on projects like wiring entire hotels as part of brand new construction or assisting with entire commercial residential developments as they begin laying ground wire to service the neighborhood and homes. In this kind of regard, Scott Electric has answered the call and completed them up to code, to complete satisfaction, and within approved timelines. All this experience makes them and keeps them prepared to handle any and all electrical concerns or needs that you might have. As you’re getting settled in, consider having Adam and his team come by your home or business to perform a safety inspection, make some upgrades, and discuss the future needs you might have. About Scott Electric: Established in 1985, Scott Electric is a family owned business specializing in both commercial and residential projects.
Bob Scott, the patriarch of the family, has more than 40 years of electrical experience and knowledge. He learned the trade working with several local electrical companies before starting his own company. Beginning with two or three employees, he and his team now number 10 – 20, depending on the size of the job, and have successfully completed a large variety of projects from single family homes to hotels and senior living facilities. Adam Scott, began his informal apprenticeship with his father at the age of 12 and has become a renowned electrician in his own right. With 20 years’ experience, he is a licensed Master Electrician in both Missouri and Illinois. He is also a licensed substation electrician, having helped build electrical substations for power companies throughout the U.S., including Colorado, Texas, New Mexico and Wyoming. Adam has worked on 13,800-volts to 345,000 -volts power lines and large transformers, giving him wide-ranging electrical expertise.
Scott Electric has the experience, knowledge and manpower to complete any project – big or small – commercial or residential.

Top Columbia Spots for Music, Dance and Self-Expression
nn BY JENNY O’DONLEY
Columbia boasts an abundance of sites where you can indulge your passion for musical performances. Whether you catch a great concert or watch a dance troupe in action, bust out your own moves or showcase your talents in a singalong, the CoMo beat goes on and on. In 2020 and early 2021, some businesses suspended live performances due to COVID-19; visit individual websites for up-to-date information.
MUSIC Music lovers will find a variety of Columbia venues to enjoy a wide range of favorite genres. And for those who see music as an experience best enjoyed alongside other interests, take note of these key haunts whether you love food, nightlife, concerts … or all three.
For Foodies Downtown, Cafe Berlin and Broadway Brewery double as venues that bring in all types of musicians from solo acts to big bands. Although the kitchen isn’t open during concerts at Cafe Berlin, be sure to grab one of their signature waffle sandwiches for brunch and plan to return when the sun goes down for indie tunes and noteworthy drinks. At Broadway Brewery, Sundays equal brunch with bluegrass, and the last Monday of every month brings the Columbia Jazz Orchestra. Head over to west Columbia where Jazz, A Louisiana Kitchen cooks up authentic Southern cuisine often paired with live jazz, blues and rock.
On the south side of town sits Murry’s, known for excellent food and live jazz. The musical menu includes solo piano Monday through Thursday, a trio on Saturday nights, and Sunday shows featuring special entrees and the world’s top jazz artists as Murry’s continues its decades-long legacy in food and entertainment.
For Night Owls Eastside Tavern transforms into a karaoke bar on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays after 9 p.m. If you’re interested in taking the stage to sing one of the hundreds of classics offered, make sure you sign up as soon as possible — slots fill up quickly. If singing loudly and off-key isn’t your thing, the tavern brings in local comics on Tuesdays. Downtown on Eighth Street, the Social Room gives you a chance to dance under the giant disco ball at this arcade-nightclub-lounge-speakeasy hybrid. Bonus: You don’t have to worry about paying cover. The Social Room also offers a robust cocktail menu, updated seasonally and featuring some
locally sourced food — order online for curbside pickup if you decide to stay in but still want a taste.
For Concertgoers On Ninth Street, The Blue Note books acts that impress. The massive music destination once hosted the Red Hot Chili Peppers — enough said. Don’t miss this classic Columbia venue, established in 1980. Shows include both musical acts and comedy. Rose Music Hall, created by the masterminds who run The Blue Note, focuses on local musicians. Music lovers here enjoy an indoor space with a full bar and stage, but outdoor events make the most of the location’s parklike setting in downtown Columbia. Down Broadway, in the heart of the District, Nash Vegas is a live country music hub. Open Friday and Saturday nights, Nash Vegas invites you to break out your cowboy boots and line dance to live country music. If you’re interested in formally joining Columbia’s dance community, check out these options for everything from ballet to hip hop.

The studio accepts students for full-semester enrollments, but there are also dropin ballet classes every Saturday. Dancearts also boasts a well-established, award-winning competition team open to junior and senior dancers who are at least 8 years old, who are enrolled in a ballet course and technique class for the entire school year, and who are attending summer technique workshops. 110 N. 10th St., Suite 3; DanceArtsOfColumbia.com
Jabberwocky Studios Founded in 2015 by Linda Schust to create arts programming for diverse populations, Jabberwocky Studios invites people of all ages and experience levels to learn break dancing, tap, swing, ballet, contemporary African dance and its specialty: hip hop. Classes run one hour per week for 12 weeks. In addition to dance classes, Jabberwocky offers curriculum in art; theater; voice; and STEAM, or science, technology, engineering, art and math. Aside from classes, the studio provides opportunities in outreach and public performances, paid internships, slam poetry and celebration of African culture in its Africa Fest. 1308 Grand Ave., JabberwockyStudios.org
Missouri Contemporary Ballet The only professional dance company in mid-Missouri, Missouri Contemporary Ballet doesn’t just boast an incredible company of dancers. It also provides a not-for-profit ballet school that relies on instruction from professionals. The School of Missouri Contemporary Ballet, founded in 2011, offers classes in various genres from classical ballet to jazz for dancers of all ages and experience levels. Students have the opportunity to perform at venues throughout mid-Missouri, and some have gone on to be accepted into the most acclaimed dance programs in the country. Participants may join classes virtually, via Zoom, upon request. 110 Orr St., Suite 102, MissouriContemporaryBallet.org l

Columbia’s Drag Scenedom: Nclusion+ When Columbia’s Yin Yang Night Club closed the curtain on its final show in April 2020, the local LGBTQ community wasn’t ready to say goodbye to its outlet for entertainment and safe expression. The brainchild of seven business partners with a goal to create a sustainable LGBTQIA+ community club in Columbia, Nclusion+ fills that void, providing a safe space for LGBTQIA+ gatherings, and has grown considerably in its first year of existence. Member support creates a sustainable source of revenue for the organization, enabling weekly drag shows, plus education and physical and mental health resources. “Drag shows are not exclusively drag,” says Anthony Plogger, one of the business partners and head of the Nclusion+ education committee. “You’ll see gay chorus, LGBTQ improv, burlesque, musicians and vocalists.” Nclusion+ currently has more than 125 entertainers on the roster (100 drag and 20 non-drag), and fans currently enjoy shows at six different Columbia venues — Farnham & Byas Playhouse, Pressed, Columbia Entertainment Company, Hampton Inn & Suites on Stadium Blvd., and the Tiger Hotel, plus monthly shows at the Regalia Hotel & Conference Center at the Lake of the Ozarks. In a typical show, four performers perform three numbers in each round. Expect fabulous makeup and costumes and great entertainment. A membership structure funds the shows and pays the entertainers, enabling Nclusion+ to operate as a sustainable LGBTQIA+ community organization. The shows provide performers an outlet to share their talent and a safe space to express themselves. Nclusion+ is a certified Safe Space organization. “This is a safe space to be who you are — whether LGBTQ or an ally,” says Plogger. Check the Nclusion+ website at NclusionPlus.com or follow the group on social media for the latest events (online or in-person) and opportunities to connect with and/or support Columbia’s LGBTQIA+ community. l
The Farnham and Byas Playhouse
WA new and diverse addition to Columbia’s stage, the Farnham and Byas Playhouse offers high-quality performing arts education and theater productions at an affordable price. It’s the brainchild of local theater community members Ashley Farnham and Marvin Byas IV, united by their common goal to make instruction available to all, regardless of economic status or background. Open to both children and adults from beginner to advanced, the Playhouse provides a wide range of classes including various dance styles and voice as well as private instruction in audition technique. The flexible registration format allows students to pick and choose what they want to learn, with no penalties for changing month to month.
Seeking productions that align with their mission, Farnham and Byas Playhouse partners with other local inclusive, performance-based organizations. A collaboration with Jabberwocky Studios offers theater opportunities to underserved populations. The Playhouse also shares its stage with Nclusion+, Columbia’s pop-up LGBTQ memberowned club, providing a location for its drag competitions and performances. Visit farnhamandbyasplayhouse. com or follow on social media for the latest class schedules and performances. A nonprofit organization, the Playhouse also accepts sponsorships and donations via their website. l

WEST
SOUTH
Some 40 years ago, the western edge of Columbia was rolling farmland, a bucolic buffer between the interstate and the smattering of businesses at the intersection of West Broadway and North Stadium. These days, you’d be hard-pressed to find a cow or a hay bale in this playground for the shop-tillyou-drop crowd. The 90 tenants of Columbia Mall — anchored by Dillard’s, JCPenney and Target — offer everything from clothing to books, housewares to electronics, plus entertainment and dining. Next door, The Shoppes at Stadium features such national retailers as Bed Bath & Beyond, David’s Bridal, PetSmart, Old Navy, Shoe Carnival and Dick’s Sporting Goods. This section of Stadium Boulevard is lined with well-known retailers — Ashley HomeStore, Best Buy, Hobby Lobby and Marshalls among others. Crossroads West Shopping Center at the junction of Broadway and Stadium is home to Petco, Planet Fitness and Red Weir Athletic Supplies.
Follow Providence Road south past Stadium Boulevard and you’ll find specialized retailers to suit any CoMo lifestyle. The intersection of Providence and Nifong Boulevard is an epicenter of bustling commercial activity. Nifong Square boasts services from Peak Sport and Spine physical therapy, Ell & Company salon and Tiger Cleaners. Across Peachtree Drive, you’ll find Authority Gymnastics, The French Laundry & Alterations, Show Me Guitars and more. Farther south is A-1 Party & Event Rental and Big O Tires. Just past Rock Bridge High School, tap into various services for health care, veterinary medicine and landscaping, plus an artisan gift shop called Plume. Across Providence is Rock Bridge Shopping Center with Big Lots, HyVee and Joann Fabrics and Crafts. Head east on Nifong to check out Kohl’s department store and another Walmart Supercenter. Due south are several storage vendors, Orscheln Farm & Home and a range of automotive services. If your south CoMo tour routes you along Forum Boulevard, start
at Forum Shopping Center. Look for retail enterprises such as Schnucks supermarket, pet favorite Treats Unleashed and the bargain hunter’s paradise Tuesday Morning. Catch a movie at Forum 8 or head south to find Clovers Natural Market and Songbird Station.
NORTH Columbia’s north side is the industrial heart of the city. Local factories situated primarily north of I-70 pump out all manner of goods for the entire country. Here you’ll find 3M, American Air Filter, Environmental Dynamics International, Honeywell, Kraft Heinz, Nanova Biomaterials Inc., Patric Chocolate, Quaker Oats, Schneider Electric Square D and Watlow Electric Manufacturing Co. Suppliers tend to gravitate to this side of town — including Bolivar Insulation, Con-Agg Companies, Crown Power & Equipment, Henderson Implement Co., Mid-City Lumber and Midwest Block & Brick. There are automotive services, body shops and salvage yards aplenty on the north side, as well as recyclers, waste collectors and the city landfill. l

Raise Up a Child nn BY JENNY O’DONLEY
Early education and child care in Columbia For working parents relocating to Columbia, finding a child care service that fits both the needs of your child and your family is crucial. Here are the three questions you should ask when evaluating options. 1. ARE YOU LICENSED? In Missouri, if a provider cares for more than four children and is of no relation to those children, he or she must be licensed, which ensures the service provided meets health and safety regulations. 2. WHAT ARE YOUR QUALIFICATIONS? Experience and education may give you insight into the child care provider’s professionalism, level of care and expertise. Ask for details about qualifications. 3. WHAT ACCREDITATION DO YOU HOLD? Missouri Accreditation (MOA) provides quality standards for programs serving children from birth to school age within the state of Missouri. Nationally, the National Association for the Education of Young Children and the National Association for Family Child Care are two of the largest associations that provide accreditation.

A Great Start: Parents as Teachers Supports Columbia Families To help kids reach their full potential, Columbia Public Schools’ Parents as Teachers (PAT) is a free parent education and family support program for qualifying families with children from age 0 to 5. PAT helps parents lay a strong foundation for children’s future success in school and life through: personal visits, which are facilitated by parent educators, specially trained in child development, who make visits to the family home on a regular basis to engage in discussions about child development and the family’s needs; group connections, which provide opportunities for parents and children to come together to learn more about child development, network with other families and observe their child with other children and practice parenting skills; annual screenings in health, hearing, vision and overall development, offered to each child; and the PAT resource network, through which parent educators can help link families to appropriate community agencies whenever appropriate. The importance of an excellent education is a staple of the Columbia community. The area offers a wealth of educational opportunities through public and private means. Students here excel in their classrooms and in their postsecondary education careers, whether they attend public or private school. Both systems equip students with the tools necessary to succeed — it’s just a matter of finding the right fit for your family and, most importantly, your child. Explore the key components of Columbia public and private schools below.
Columbia Public Schools Accredited with distinction by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, Columbia Public Schools is the fifth-largest district in the state and includes 21 elementary schools, seven middle schools, four high schools, a career education center and an early childhood learning center. The school district’s newest building is the recently completed John Warner Middle School, opening for the 2020-21 school year. The district also completed an addition to Locust Street Expressive Arts Elementary School in 2020 and is currently constructing a classroom addition to Rock Bridge Elementary School. In 2019-20, CPS boasted an enrollment of 19,052 students from preschool to grade 12 and a student-to-teacher ratio of 13:1. Nearly 90% of Columbia Public School students extend their education beyond high school and more than 75% attend a college or university.
E D U C AT I O N
Private Schools More than 4,000 students in Columbia receive their education through area private schools. Options include
Montessori programs, faith-based schools (such as Christian Fellowship School, Father Tolton Catholic High School and The Islamic School of Columbia-Missouri), college preparatory choices (such as Columbia Independent School) and more. Private education, with its smaller enrollment numbers, offers unique opportunities for individual growth and leadership development in a family environment. Kari Dowell, director of admissions and marketing at Columbia Independent School, says that small
class sizes are a key contributing factor to student success. “[Private school class sizes] are smaller than in public schools,” Dowell says, “and that allows the teachers to provide more individualized instruction to students.” Advocates note that private schools often have a close-knit atmosphere as teachers, students and families get to know each other well. The community they create is a supportive educational environment that encourages individual achievement and improves academic abilities. l PHOTOS BY COLUMBIA PUBLIC SCHOOLS
Student performance on the ACT and SAT exams exceed state and national averages. Of the 2,300 students taking advanced placement courses, 81.1% earn college credit. The average Columbia teacher holds a master’s degree and has 12½ years of professional experience. To learn more about Columbia Public Schools, visit cpsk12.org.

MOVING CAN WEAR YOU DOWN! LET US PICK YOU UP! The Emels spend time caring for you and your family! The Emels know what it's like to move around and settle down in different places. These Missouri-nomads have lived in multiple places around the great state of Missouri. Most recently, their family relocated to Ashland, Missouri - a bedroom community of CoMo. While their home is located outside Columbia city-limits, their heart and soul relocates to CoMo every day. If it weren't for the beautiful land and custom home they have in Ashland, they would be pulled to town for an easier commute. Yet, like so many others, they drive to Columbia for work. After the Emels get their 2 daughters up and off to school, they begin work running their independent businesses. Dr. Ashley opens the doors of Compass Chiropractic and Wellness, welcomes her team, and begins adjusting everyone's health in the right direction. At the clinic you can find relief through chiropractic adjustments, acupuncture, massage, kinesio tape, nutritional products, e-stim, cold laser therapy and much more. Dr. Ashley is Webster Certified and known around Columbia for being one of the best Chiropractic Physicians in the area. Caring for others is a family affair with the Emels. Aaron is the owner & operator of several Cost Cutters and Supercuts hair salons in mid-Missouri. In their salons, the stylists provide traditional cut, color, and simple waxing services, as well as sell designer hair line products for personal use. When the Emels are not helping others look and feel better, they enjoy spending time with family at their country home where their life is filled with hunting, ATV riding, and plenty of outdoor family adventure! Quick, Urgent & Emergency Care Facilities
How do you know where to go?
nn BY JENNY O’DONLEY
Traditional health care is booming in Columbia, and there’s no shortage of primary care physicians and specialists to meet your needs. But what happens during evening hours, weekends or other times when your regular doctor isn’t available? That’s when quick and urgent care facilities come in. So how do you know where to go? Take a quick assessment of your injury or illness, and seek help accordingly. If it’s a severe or life-threatening emergency (such as chest pain, severe breathing problems, major bleeding or unexplained loss of consciousness), call 911 or head to the ER right away (see listing on page 73). But for minor health concerns or serious but not life-threatening issues, quick or urgent care are great options that not only provide the skilled medical attention you need but also help you avoid a long wait in the ER.
Quick Care Minor health issue but still need quick service? Choose quick care for fast, convenient care for common health issues when you aren’t able to visit your primary care physician. Staffed by nurse practitioners and physicians assistants, these facilities typically treat patients 24 months and older. Go here for sore throats, minor cuts and wounds, cold, cough and flu, etc.

Quick Care? Urgent Care?
Emergency?
Ask Your Care Provider… Do you participate in my insurance plan? Just like when
choosing a primary care physician, make sure you check what insurance plans are covered before seeking treatment.
Do I need follow-up treatment/tests? This
information is not only important to you, but your regular doctor will likely also want to discuss next steps.
Remember Primary Care Urgent and quick care facilities have grown exponentially over the past decade, filling a void for individuals who can’t access their regular medical doctor on nights, weekends and holidays. But one of the biggest fallbacks of quick medical treatment is that it lacks continuity of care. At quick and urgent care facilities, the providers’ purpose is to offer quick, easy access to affordable health care only when your regular doctor isn’t available. A primary care physician knows your medical history and provides care accordingly. That’s why urgent care is a supplement to regular care, not a replacement.
Can you explain that again? If you don’t understand an aspect of the service or treatment plan (tests, medication, etc.), always ask for clarification.
Emergency Care
When will I get my results? You might need to call the clinic back to get results. Clarify this before leaving the facility.
Can I get everything in writing? Make sure you get
written documentation of your diagnosis, prescribed medications, instructions for follow-up treatment, the name of the facility and the doctor or nurse who treated you. This may be used for insurance purposes, as well as following up with your primary care doctor.

Holistic health is a growing industry, and Columbia is home to numerous small businesses dedicated to treating the whole person — body, mind and spirit. “Holistic health looks at the body as a unit,” says Barb Duggan, owner of Connective Health Massage Therapy. “It’s a unit with parts, for sure, but everything is connected.” Check out these local businesses helping Columbians reach optimal wellness.

NMT gives therapists specific protocols that are researchbased to alleviate pain and dysfunction. “Our massage therapists are looking for physical root cause of dysfunction, so we tend to ask more questions and will work on areas like the abdominals or muscles related to breathing to uncover more of the contributing factors of dysfunction and pain,” owner Barb Duggan says. “We want people to experience more freedom of movement in their bodies.”

A health treatment rapidly growing in popularity across the United States, cryotherapy uses cold temperatures (-180 degrees F to -240 degrees F) to safely lower body temperature, quickly send blood, oxygen and nutrients to the skin, and in doing so reduce inflammation and pain and increasing collagen production. The four main health benefits are recovery, beauty, weight loss and overall health and wellness. Cryotherapy sessions last only three minutes, and because the air in the treatment chamber is dry, the temperature doesn’t feel as cold as it sounds. 2901 W. Clarity Float Spa Said to relieve stress, muscle tension, pain, anxiety and more, floating is a relaxation practice that involves submerging your body in shallow water (about 10 inches deep) with magnesium sulfate content. The high salt content makes the body more buoyant in the water, allowing you to “float.” At Clarity Float Spa, this occurs either in the Dream Pod, a “futuristic, sleep and womb-like” device, or the Dream Cabin, a larger flotation device (tall enough to stand up in) that “feels more like floating through outer space.” Floats last 90 minutes and deliver a deep sense of calm. 309 S. Columbia is filled with activities for those in their golden years. Columbia is a beautiful city that draws retirees to the area in droves. The city’s dynamic atmosphere can be a persuasive reason to retire here but if you need other motives, consider the plentiful shopping and dining opportunities as well as ample recreational prospects. With several golf courses, local artisan shops and galleries, and more than 100 restaurants to choose from, Columbia is a wonderful place to retire. Most importantly, the area offers economical living and accessible health care, in addition to a safe living environment. The best way to get to know Columbia is by getting involved in local organizations and recreational activities. Known as Collegetown, USA, the city is home to six college campuses offering an assortment of educational, cultural and recreational opportunities. The University of Missouri, Columbia College and Stephens College host countless activities, including athletic events, art exhibitions and public festivals. These festivals have volunteer positions that can often score you free access to the festival after you’ve done your part. You can explore volunteer options by working with the local Chamber of Commerce or visiting the city website at CoMo.gov/volunteer. Get an overview of all that Columbia has to offer its retired citizens through the city’s 50+ Program. Currently, limited inperson activities — bingo, painting group, knitting and rug hooking — allow for social distancing during COVID-19 restrictions. For the foreseeable future, trips for 50+ Tours are not scheduled. The tours via motor coach offer travel opportunities for active individuals 50 and older. Faith Walk
New city New home New job New school New church
If your relocation checklist includes a new home for worship, Columbia offers several avenues for your faith journey. With more than 150 congregations in the area, opportunities abound to meet your spiritual needs. From intimate gatherings of a few believers to dynamic assemblies of a few thousand, ministries here run the gamut of doctrine, mission and worship styles. Take your time to select the best fit for you and your family, advises the Rev. Keith Simon, co-lead pastor at The 82

Crossing, one of Columbia’s largest churches. “Finding a new church in a new city can be difficult,” Simon says. “It usually takes about six weeks before you can start to get a sense of whether a church is a good fit for you. Of course, a church’s beliefs are foundational. But it’s also important to assess whether a particular church will provide opportunities for you to learn and grow in your faith, whether the church community is friendly and whether you can support the church’s mission in the community.” A good fit can take many forms. Columbia’s spiritual landscape includes small neighborhood enclaves, suburban settings, sprawling urban centers and even a few megachurches. Services can be on-site or online. Although Christianity dominates, there are also worship options for various Eastern and Western faiths.
High-energy, contemporary services with theater-like seating and crystalclear acoustics attract thousands to The Crossing and Woodcrest Chapel, churches lauded by local musicians as the best gigs in town. In small family settings such as Rock Bridge Christian Church or Little Bonne Femme Baptist Church, you’ll quickly get to know everyone’s name. Worship in the country, perhaps at Olivet Christian Church, on the east side of town since 1874, or Midway Locust Grove United Methodist Church, established in 1817 and the oldest church west of the Mississippi. Savor the history at Second Missionary Baptist Church, St. Paul AME and Log Providence Missionary Baptist, all built by former slaves freed to form their own congregations in the 1860s.
LIFESTYLE & LEISURE
‘O come, let us worship…’ Columbia is home to more than 30 religious denominations, as well as numerous independent and interdenominational churches.
Downtown, you’ll find the imposing edifice of Missouri United Methodist Church occupying a full block of Ninth Street; inside, the magnificent strains of the Skinner organ add joy to the services. First Baptist Church, at Broadway and Waugh, is the city’s oldest church, formed in 1823 when Columbia was just 2 years old. Another “first church” — First Christian — has welcomed Disciples of Christ to the corner of 10th and Walnut since 1832. Catholics have worship options downtown, on campus or on the city’s west side. “Columbia’s Catholic ministries offer opportunities for sacramental worship, community, faith formation and service,” says the Rev. Chris Cordes, pastor of Our Lady of Lourdes. “There are three Catholic parishes, a Catholic K-8 school and Catholic high school. You are welcomed and encouraged to attend and become involved in any of our parishes and activities!” Reflecting Columbia’s diverse population, worship can have an international flavor: Agape Fellowship Church, catering to refugees from
Rwanda, Burundi and eastern Congo; Columbia Chinese Christian Church; Columbia Korean Baptist Church; Korean First Presbyterian Church. Iglesia Alfa y Omega Baptist Church and Sacred Heart Catholic Church both offer Hispanic ministries. At St. Luke’s the Evangelist Greek Orthodox Church, services are in English and Greek; worshippers often recite the Lord’s Prayer in their own native language. Congregation Beth Shalom serves the mid-Missouri Jewish community as the only synagogue in the region. The Islamic Center of Central Missouri ministers to local Muslims, international students and immigrants. Shanthi Mandir Hindu Temple is open to all sects of Hinduism and all deities. Show Me Dharma advances Theravada Buddhist ideals through teachings and practices. Columbia’s college campuses offer additional ministries in The Rock campus church, St. Thomas More Newman Center, Baptist Student Union, Hillel and Chabad House, as well as other student outreach services.
