Columbia is filled with activities for those in their golden years.
Columbia is a beautiful city that has many mid-Missouri retirees flocking to the area in droves. Columbia’s atmosphere can be a persuasive reason to retire here, but if you need another motive, consider the plentiful shopping and dining opportunities as well as the ample recreational prospects. With several golf courses, local artisan shops and galleries and more than 100 restaurants to choose from, Columbia is a wonderful place to retire. Most importantly, Columbia offers retirees economical living and accessible health care, in addition to a safe living environment.
The best way to get to know Columbia is by getting involved in local organizations and recreational activities. Some of the greatest draws to the Columbia area are the universities. Columbia is known as college town, and it is the home of many avid MU Tigers fans. There are countless activities hosted by the University of Missouri, including athletic events, art exhibitions and public festivals.
These festivals have volunteer positions that can often score you free access to the festival after you’ve done your part. You can explore volunteer options by working with the local Chamber of Commerce or visiting the city website.
The best way to explore all that Columbia has to offer its retired citizens is through the city’s 50+ Program. Visit como.gov, and type “50+” into the search bar to find the program page. We’ve highlighted some of the most exciting programs below.
The Columbia Area Senior Center is an activity center run by Boone County Senior Services. Here, you can enjoy a meal in the dining room, have a jam session, exercise and play games. You can even participate in wood-carving, linedancing, card games and educational seminars. The Columbia

Osher@Mizzou provides classes and workshops to stimulate minds and develop friendships among people 50 and older in central Missouri. Classes are relaxed and informal — just for the sheer joy of learning. The program shares knowledge, sparks ideas, inspires new thinking and forges friendships. COLUMBIA NEWCOMERS AND NEIGHBORS CLUB
Offers opportunity to become acquainted with others in the community, both new residents and those who have lived here for years. An atmosphere of friendliness, good will and helpful information is a priority. Members have various backgrounds, experiences and skills — everyone is welcome. Organizes a variety of activities, monthly special interest groups and volunteer opportunities throughout the year. The Columbia Newcomers Club is nonpartisan, non-sectarian and does not sponsor legislative activities.
