Design movements to watch in 2023

Susan Pehar, founder of ducksnest. interiors and ducksnest. furniture is a believer in investing in authentic design that goes the distance, rather than trends that date quickly and contribute to landfill. Susan looks to the European design industry for inspiration, here are the design movements she is seeing for the year ahead.

Biophilic design

More architects and interior designers are designing based on the principles of Biophilic Design, a concept where the occupant becomes connected to nature through their built environment. The design could be interwoven directly with nature through space and place, or indirectly, through the use of natural materials. Specifying timber pieces that are in their most raw form, allowing the wood to breathe and feel as natural as possible is a design focus of mine.

Sustainability focus

Sustainability has been on designers’ minds for years, however, it is now at the absolute forefront. We are seeing a shift to specifying sustainable and local materials. There are now some fabulous furniture makers out of Europe where protecting the earth is at the core of their business models. We are launching a phenomenal new furniture brand in 2023 that explores how plastic waste can be used as a material to create a product that is long-lasting and has a higher emotional and material value.

Viva Magenta

I am loving the return to colour and deep pigment hues used across joinery and furniture. The 2023 Pantone colour of the year, Vivid Magenta is bold and energetic. I see it being applied in upholstery, natural and sustainable fibres and would look incredible in a wool texture.

A celebration of scale

One of my favourite directions in the design world is the new take on scale and proportion. We are seeing oversized furniture being placed in small spaces for drama and impact, or similarly very small pieces being used within expansive spaces. Curves are back in a big way and it’s been interesting to watch large, curved and sculptural forms used in surprising ways for example in staircases and walls.

Traditional meets Contemporary

I have always enjoyed combining furniture from various eras, mixing heirloom with contemporary pieces or antiques with modern art. Fabric houses are embracing this ethos, designing traditional motives and applying them to a very modern colour palette. Designers Guild is a fabric house I’ve long admired and specified. Their colour palettes and use of shape and motif are always fresh, inspiring and of the current moment yet understated and timeless.

Modern Times

Though not new, Modern Times is an ever-evolving showroom and gallery space in Melbourne’s Fitzroy that is refreshed every fortnight with newly restored pieces. The pieces are all handpicked by the brand’s expert team on their vintage product trips to Europe, then lovingly restored and added to the light and airy showroom. My Neighbourhood

You entered the real estate industry nearly two decades ago. What do you love most about living and working in Bentleigh?

I am born and bred in Bentleigh. It is such a great location, I have fond memories of jumping on my bike straight after school and either riding to the beach or to Moorabbin to watch St Kilda train.

I love working in this area as it is a family friendly place to raise kids. An abundance of great schools, parks, cafes.

It really has the feel of a country town – you walk down the main street and know everyone.

Tell us what has changed in your area over this time.

Redevelopment has doubled in the area since I started my career in real estate. The design of homes has varied. We have an eclectic mix of beautiful period homes with contemporary builds.

The demographic of residents has changed dramatically due to young families wanting to buy in the area for the great schools and amenities. It’s also a stones throw away from the bay and beach lifestyle.

Do you remember the first home you sold? Tell us about that.

It was an unrenovated period home in Bentleigh. I was lucky enough to sell it at Auction and they still live there today!

What advice would you give to an up-and-coming agent on how to form and maintain great relationships?

Trent Collie, Director and father of two, has lived in Bentleigh his whole life and has witnessed the evolution of period homes to contemporary builds. With a long history and specialised focus on the Bayside and Glen Eira real estate market, he contributes his success to maintaining relationships and being present in his local area. We sat down with Trent to find out his recommendations in and around Melbourne’s bayside area and how he and his family spend their weekends.

Be humble – people want to deal with a genuine, real person. I love the saying “be yourself, everyone else is taken”.

My key for maintaining my relationships is to check in, not everything is about a sale.

I am present in my local area – at the coffee shop, the butcher, the supermarket. I love to getting to know everyone in my area – my wife finds it funny that every trip down the street takes me twice as long because I love a chat.

Do you have a favourite sold property? What made that so memorable?

My absolute favourite was 9 Colin Street, Bentleigh East – it broke the record for the highest price in Bentleigh East and built by a very well known builder in the area, Thomas Archer. We had over 100 groups through and every single person loved it! It had everything you would want in a beautiful family home. A entertainers dream!

What is a must-read book or podcast you recommend?

Rich Roll. He delivers intimate and deep conversion with his podcast guests - some of the brightest and forward thinking minds.

Can you share a favourite quote from someone you look up to?
