National President’s Message

Thank you to everyone who attended our AFDA National Convention in Adelaide in March.

What a fabulous few days of learning, networking, and reconnecting with friends and colleagues from across the country and beyond! This year's event was particularly special as we collaborated with the Australian Institute of Embalming for several sessions and social events, fostering stronger relationships and mutual learning between our two professional groups.

Promoting professional standards and emphasising the importance of funerals were central themes in our Convention program. The variety and depth of our speakers reflected the evolving landscape of our industry. Dr Hannah Gould from the DeathTech Team provided invaluable insights into evidence-based death care, highlighting the future of our services. Kosha Gada's session on global digital trends offered a comprehensive look at technological advancements worldwide. From the UK, Ben Whitworth led three enlightening sessions on the crucial role of mortuary care and embalming, emphasising the importance of expertise in these areas. Kev Perry's session on creating safe workspaces was equally important, addressing a critical aspect of our profession.

We also had the opportunity to learn from one another during our panel session and were moved by Errol Barrett’s reflections on his 60 years of service in the industry. Many of you found the presentation by Anna Meares OAM truly inspirational, and we wish her the best in her role as Chef de Mission of the Australian Olympic Team for the Paris games.

At the President’s Dinner, I expressed my gratitude to everyone working behind the scenes, particularly our National Office team – Dale Gilson, Deanne Brown, Sherida Good, Kate Chapley, Edwina Ellicott, Lucinda Cate, Theresa Bernstein, and Coralie Higgins. Your efforts were instrumental in making the Convention a success. Thank you for providing us with such a wonderful experience in Adelaide.

The dedication of our Divisional and National Councillors is a testament to the commitment of our industry leaders. On behalf of our members, I thank you for your hard work and dedication. I would like to particularly acknowledge our National Councillors: from Tasmania, Paul Graham and Travis Tann; from South Australia, Sharyn Moll and Peter Caporaso; from Queensland, Don Burstow, Matt Hansen and Laurel Shanley; from Western Australia, Immediate Past National President Adrian Barrett and National Junior Vice President Deanne McLeod; from New South Wales, Simon Law, Nick Maurer, and National Senior Vice President Asha Dooley; and from Victoria, Past National President Andrew Pinder and National Treasurer James MacLeod. Your contributions to advocacy, media, governance, education, training, and strategic planning are deeply appreciated.

As we plan for the upcoming financial year, we are in the process of securing sponsors for the 2024-2025 period. I extend my heartfelt thanks to our incredible sponsors. Your support is invaluable, enabling us to serve families with the highest level of care. We look forward to continuing our partnership

over the next year.

As we move into the winter months, I encourage you to take advantage of the Funeral Learning Hub and set aside a regular time each week for self-development and to explore the broad range of topics, including new Lunch & Learn courses. We are also excited to announce that we are working on integrating AI capabilities into our platform, a world-first feature that we will introduce soon!

Looking ahead, please ensure your passports are up to date. In March 2025, we will gather in the vibrant location of Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, for our National Convention and to celebrate our 90th anniversary. This promises to be a remarkable event with a diverse program designed to offer something for everyone. We will provide more information in the coming months, so you can start planning. Mark your calendars now as this is an event you won’t want to miss!

I look forward to catching up with many of you at the upcoming AGMs in Darwin, Hobart and Swan Valley – the programs for these weekends are coming together beautifully so book early to avoid disappointment!

Finally, remember to look after yourselves and each other. Check in with your friends and colleagues and ask, “Are you OK?” Our work is critical and challenging, but knowing that your actions make a difference can be incredibly encouraging. Take a moment each day to reflect on the positive impact you have on others. Thank you for your dedication and support.

Warm regards

Kelly Scott

CRITICAL INFO

After the unexpected death of a close friend just over 12 months ago, Catherine Ashton came up with the idea of developing Critical Info – a cloud-based web application that allows you to document your life, your wishes, and your legacy to share with your loved ones.

“Losing a friend so unexpectedly brought me face-to-face with the crucial importance of endof-life planning and made me determined to establish a secure platform that would empower people with the knowledge and tools they need for informed decisions and comprehensive preparation,” says Catherine.

“While going through this

process, I have had the opportunity to speak with a range of people and I learnt everyone has their own experience with death. These stories are often unique and untold as people tend not to discuss death. I realised there was an opportunity to share these stories which is why I created the Don’t Be Caught Dead podcast, Catherine states.

“We have collated over 200 national organisations on our Resource Hub that specialise in end-of-life planning, deathcare or bereavement; saving people time, stress, and money when trying to find resources after a loved one has died.”

To help ease the stress and uncertainty

of dealing with estates and end-of-life arrangements, Catherine has written a guide – My loved one has died, what do I do now? in consultation with Greg Russo of Greg Russo Law Pty Ltd, a specialist in Wills and Estates Law in Victoria, and assistance from AFDA.

The guide details each state of Australia and covers the first hours, days, weeks and months after a loved one dies, stepping you through a prioritised list of tasks you will need to complete, from the funeral arrangements to finalising the estate.

Catherine would like to offer AFDA Members the opportunity to purchase this downloadable guide in bulk lots of ten at the reduced rate of $34, instead of $38. Some funeral homes have decided to use this guide as a gift for their clients. If you would like to take up this offer, please contact Catherine directly.

Don’t Be Caught Dead can be listened to on any of the major podcast apps. Critical Info cloud-based web app will be launched later in 2024 and the guide is now available for download. Visit www.criticalinfo.com.au or call Catherine on 0419 883 443 to learn more.

From the CEO

What an extraordinary few days attendees had at the aligned AFDA Convention and AIE Conference in Adelaide!

With over 340 attendees participating in both joint and individual training and social events, it marked a milestone for both associations. The speakers provided a blend of education and entertainment, with an inspiring keynote luncheon address by Anna Meares OAM. Errol Barrett, reflecting on his 60 years in the funeral industry, was also a highlight. The resounding message stressed the importance of valuing and honouring the wisdom of those who paved the way before us, and reiterated that, as funeral directors, our paramount duty is to care for those entrusted to us.

We were fortunate to have Greg Shorland present on the exciting new initiatives coming to the Funeral Learning Hub, including Artificial Intelligence. The online Funeral Learning Hub continues to thrive, with over 580 funeral industry staff now registered and learning. Additionally, over 240 digital badges have been issued. If you and your staff would like a one-on-one session with Greg, please contact Edwina Ellicott at the AFDA office.

The Convention survey results revealed that the majority of AFDA Members rated the aligned

AFDA Convention and AIE Conference as either ‘very good’ (46%) or ‘excellent’ (49%). Bringing both events to the same location over similar days required a tremendous amount of effort from many individuals. Thank you to the AFDA National Council and the AIE Board, and members of both associations for embracing this new approach. The AFDA staff dedicated significant time and effort to make this a reality. Special thanks to Deanne Brown for overseeing the aligned events, with wonderful support from all the staff at the AFDA office. Next year, AFDA Members will head to Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam for our Convention, and preparations are well underway to ensure it is an amazing experience for all attendees.

It's that time of year when we reach out to our National Corporate Partners to confirm if they wish to continue supporting AFDA and our members. The income generated from their support makes many of our Divisional and National events more affordable throughout the year. Our corporate partners are reputable businesses, and their contributions play a significant role in maintaining the high quality of our Association. Any support you can provide them in return greatly benefits the funeral industry.

Thank you to members who have submitted their Statutory Declaration for 2023 along with their copyright requirements. Although it's a time-consuming task, it's a crucial aspect of our year as it enables us to finalise our Divisional and National budgets for 2024/25. It is also important to remind members to complete their PEVs online through the member portal. The initial online PEV may pose challenges as all information must be provided, but in subsequent years, you'll only need to update any changes. This approach ensures that we can confidently assert the current status of members' PEV inspections, avoiding the issue of outdated inspections that may occur when relying on in-person visits across states. New members will still need to undergo an in-person PEV.

In addition to launching the online Funeral Learning Hub this financial year, we have dedicated resources to reviewing the AFDA Constitution and Bylaws. This review is nearly complete, and members will have the opportunity to view the updated documents before they are finalised. A special thank you to the Hon Stephen Parry, Don Burstow, Kelly Scott, Deanne McLeod, and Andrew Pinder for your hard work and diligence.

At national office, AFDA brand awareness is always a key focus. Our top priority is promoting the AFDA and encouraging families to seek services from our member firms during their time of loss. We regularly engage in media interviews and collaborate with organisations like Palliative Care Australia, GriefLink SA, COTA SA Rainbow Hub, Critical Info, and My Tributes. You can help by ensuring the AFDA logo is prominently displayed on your business website, making it easy for families to recognise your business as an AFDA Member.

It's incredible to think that I have been with the Australian Funeral Directors Association for five years now, having started as CEO in May 2019. What a journey it has been! Thank you for your ongoing support. We have exciting new initiatives on the horizon, so stay tuned for upcoming announcements.

The AGM season is about to begin, and I look forward to seeing many of you at these wonderful events in impressive locations across Australia. It’s a busy time for everyone, but it’s also one of the best times of the year to be part of the AFDA.

In the News Cemeteries & Crematoria NSW Interment Changes

Cemeteries

& Crematoria NSW (CCNSW) has released a new strategic statement which proposes significant changes to the sector and for NSW funeral directors.

The new strategic statement ‘Delivering strong consumer outcomes for Cemeteries and Crematoria in NSW’ will guide the transformation of the state’s cemeteries and crematoria sector with the goal of ensuring that all people in NSW have access to sustainable and affordable burial and cremation services.

CCNSW was established in 2014 under the Cemeteries and Crematoria Act 2013. It is an independent statutory agency, regulating over 400 cemeteries and crematoria operators across NSW and reports into a skillsbased Board, responsible to Minister for Small Business, Land and Property, Multiculturalism and Sport.

With a proposed implementation date of 1 July 2024, the strategic statement proposes significant changes and information that funeral directors in NSW need to be aware of and understand. The full strategic statement can be accessed at www.cemeteries. nsw.gov.au/about-us. The two key factors impacting funeral directors are:

• The Interment Industry Scheme

• The Expansion of the Interment Services Levy.

The Interment Industry Scheme

The Internment Industry Scheme (IIS) was introduced in 2023 to create clearer industry standards, lift the overall standard, reduce common customer complaints, and address key findings in the Statutory Review. Cemetery and crematorium operators will be required to apply for a licence by 30 September 2024. The licence operators will be grouped according to interment numbers. Funeral directors will be required to act as an agent when acting on behalf of families to interact with crematorium or cemeteries. CCNSW have created template contracts for funeral directors and operators to use.

The Expansion of the Interment Services Levy (ISL)

The levy commences on 1 July 2024 and will be calculated on the number of interment services. CCNSW cites the need for increased levies to enable an effective regulator for all consumers and industry. The proposed levies:

Service Levy amount

Cremation

Ash Interment

Burial

$41

$63

$156

Exemptions to the levy will include inactive operators (holders of Cemetery Operator Caretaker Licence), interment services for children under 12, stillborn children and miscarriages and interment services for destitute people. There will be a focus on simplifying the administration as much as possible and considering annual vs quarterly payments and the impact of payments in the next financial year.

Since the release of the statement CCNSW has held webinars and face to face sessions across NSW for funeral directors and operators. Jennifer Hickey, CEO CCNSW attended the NSW/ACT General Meeting weekend in Orange to provide an update and discuss members' concerns. AFDA lodged a submission with CCNSW requesting more information in relation to the following issues as follows:

• Cost to the consumer – Given the ongoing cost of living increases, this is

JENNIFER HICKEY, CEO CCNSW AND ASHA DOOLEY, PRESIDENT NSW/ACT DIVISION

particularly difficult for consumers at a time of grieving.

• Communication with consumers –Funeral directors will need collateral/ communication assets to assist with explaining the levy to the consumer.

• Implementation – The timeframe is tight. There is industry cognitive overload from the CCNSW Interment Industry Scheme. AFDA recommends this be pushed out to 2025 to allow time for an effective communication and education campaign.

• Revenue raising – Further clarification on what is meant by “revenue raised will be used for further regulation”.

CCNSW’s response to feedback and design refinements were announced on 31 May 2024. AFDA has since written to the Hon Stephen Kamper, MP, Minister for Small Business, Lands, Property, Multiculturalism and Sport to highlight ongoing concerns including the implementation date of 1 July 2024 remaining a problem for the majority of operators; that the extent of the problems CCNSW is seeking to address with the extension of the ISL be presented for public scrutiny; that the application of the increased amounts of the ISL be delayed until cost-ofliving pressures ease; and that the ISL only be applied to cremations and not on interment of ashes as well.

The NSW/ACT Divisional Council has listened to members’ concerns and advocated on their behalf through in person meetings with senior staff at CCNSW and a written submission, and will continue to provide updates as this progresses.

Funeral Learning Hub Hits a Milestone

New features

It was fantastic to see so much interest in the AFDA Funeral Learning Hub at the recent AFDA National Convention held in Adelaide in March.

The announcement of the AI feature coming soon has sparked considerable interest and even more engagement on the hub. So much so, that in April we hit a milestone with our 500th member signing up to the Funeral Learning Hub. A big congratulations goes to Rachel Wagstaff from Peter Murray Funerals in Victoria. Thank you, Rachel, and thank you to everyone else who has signed up, completed courses, earned Digital Badges and provided excellent ideas and feedback.

AI is coming!

Have you ever needed a quick and accurate answer to a funeral industry related question while on your way to a funeral? Coming soon to the Funeral Learning Hub, you’ll be able to do just that. Through the Funeral Learning Hub AI App – Eternal Ed you’ll be able to type in or voice activate a question, getting an instant response, generated from the information provided in the Funeral Learning Hub. Still in its beta stage, this is an exciting development and will be available soon.

The last few months has seen a number of new developments and courses now available on the Funeral Learning Hub.

• Symbolism in Cemeteries – a fascinating new Lunch & Learn which takes you on a journey through common symbolism found in cemeteries.

• Legislation tab – for quick and easy access to current industry legislation for your state go the Legislation tab on the menu bar of your dashboard. Here you can access direct links to relevant Acts and Regulations for your specific state.

• AFDA Convention 2024 – all the sessions from the 2024 AFDA Convention are now housed on the Funeral Learning Hub. Go to the AFDA Convention 2024 tab on the menu bar, just beneath the Legislation tab to locate the session recordings.

We are constantly updating the Webinar section and each month you’ll find new webinars. The latest additions to this space are: AFDA National Webinars – Better Preparing Families for the Experience of Selecting a Casket or Coffin presented by ACC Higgins, Driving Performance Outcomes for Your Funeral Home presented by Key Business Advisors and Voluntary Assisted Dying in NSW.

The benefits of a Digital Badge

AFDA has issued 249 Digital Badges – just on half of the Funeral Learning Hub sign ups, and we’ll continue to issue these each month. A Digital Badge is a tangible verification of your learning. To earn a Digital Badge, all the courses in a Bundle need to be completed. Eligible learners will receive an email from our partner Credly advising them they have earned a Digital Badge. Make sure you set up your account, download your Badge and start sharing on social media to showcase your knowledge and achievements. This will allow readers to click through to find out more about the course and the learning level

achieved. Your notification from Credly will provide full instructions on how to do this.

Funeral Learning Hub fun facts

There are over 580 members engaging on the Funeral Learning Hub; the top three Digital Badges earned are: Introduction to the Funeral Industry, The Arrangement and Funeral, and Care of the Deceased. NSW is still leading the way with the number of signups followed closely by QLD. However, ACT and Victoria are showing a sharp spike in the number of users.

What would you like to see?

We are grateful for receiving such positive feedback and helpful advice. If you think there’s a learning gap or topic that needs to be available for AFDA Members, please let us know. As the industry lead for learning, AFDA wants to make sure the Funeral Learning Hub continues to deliver value and best practice learning for our members.

Grieving Together – Part 5: Embracing Spirituality

Regardless of the beliefs of those grieving, spiritual practices can help them survive the early months of grief as well as profoundly enrich the remainder of their days.

This is the fifth article in a six-part article series by Alan D Wolfelt, author, educator and consultant to the funeral industry adapted from his new book You’re Not Crazy – You’re Grieving as a reminder that crazy is normal in new grief and to help funeral staff support families through their intense grief during the early hours, days and weeks following the death of a loved one.

In early grief, existential questions tend to naturally arise. Why did the person have to die? Why now? Why in this way? Why does anyone live and die? Why are we here? I often say “why” questions naturally precede “how” questions. “Why did this happen?” instinctively comes before “How will I survive that it did happen?”

It is normal for those grieving to try to make sense of things, to try to understand

It is normal for those grieving to try to make sense of things, to try to understand. It is normal to wonder about and search for the meaning of life – their life, the life of the person who died, and life in general.

Most “why” questions and concerns after a death are esoteric in nature. In other words, they’re spiritual. They’re spiritual because they can’t be answered with concrete facts and hard sciences. Instead, they have to do with our innate sense that there may be something bigger or greater than us at work in our lives and in the universe.

It is important to acknowledge that spirituality and religiosity are not synonymous. In some people’s lives they overlap completely – their religious life is their spiritual life. Other people have a rich spiritual life with few or no ties to an organised religion. Still others may not consider themselves ‘spiritual’ but have a philosophy of life they live by.

Searching for answers

In the early weeks of grief, many people struggle with finding reasons to get out of bed in the morning. This is mostly a practical, not spiritual, kind of searching. The more spiritual kind of searching in grief, however, is the main theme of this article. There generally aren’t easy answers to the grand why questions. That’s one of our chief challenges in grief, in fact – learning to live with not knowing and uncertainty. But even if there aren’t answers, there is still a lot of value in the search.

Simply by talking to other people about their search, exploring their questions, looking for answers, those grieving are allowing themselves to mourn authentically. You can help those grieving by being open to whatever spiritual and/or religious impulses and ideas they bring to your funeral home. If they want to integrate certain spiritual concepts into the funeral experience, you can help them do so.

Caring for the spiritual self

When I’m counselling someone who’s grieving, I always encourage them to build spiritual practices into their everyday routines. Even just ten minutes a day devoted to caring for their spirit can have a profound impact on their healing and wellbeing.

The spiritual practices which will clear their head, help them feel grounded, and nurture their divine spark will differ between each grieving person but if you are ever asked to give ideas for spiritual nurturing and exploration, here’s a list you can use:

- Go for a walk in nature

- Attend religious or spiritual services

- Speak with a clergyperson or other spiritual leader

- Sit outdoors somewhere beautiful

- Breathe deeply

- Listen to music that speaks to your soul

- Do something good for your body

- Write in a journal

- Pay attention to your five senses in this moment

- Pray

- Meditate

- Make something

- Spend time with someone who loves you

- Do something that makes you feel hopeful

- Help someone else

14

- Watch the sun rise or set

- Read a spiritual text

- Practice yoga

- Garden

- Get a massage

- Give a gift

- Read or write poetry

- Express gratitude.

Embracing mystical experiences

After a death, a number of those grieving have mystical experiences, which often give comfort and sometimes, because they fall into the realm of the supernatural, these experiences make some people who are grieving feel crazy! You can help assure those grieving that they are not crazy and that these encounters are common and normal.

It is not unusual for people experiencing grief to feel they are being contacted by the person who died, for example. Sometimes, this sign comes in the form of a bird or animal. When a butterfly, for example, suddenly appears in their yard or path they might take it as a sign from the person who died that they are safe and well. Such synchronicities often feel mystical when we are searching for meaning.

Finding healing in rituals

I often find that additional rituals after the funeral can be helpful in surviving early grief. By rituals, I simply mean actions that we

perform in a certain way and in a certain sequence. We perform them for a purpose that has emotional and spiritual meaning and is greater than the sum of its parts.

As you know, the funeral is a foundational grief ritual. It helps those grieving begin to acknowledge the reality of loss, remember the person who died, activate social support, express feelings and search for meaning. Grief rituals don’t have to be formal ceremonies, though. In fact, most of them can be brief, informal, and simple.

One example is what I call the ‘Ten-Minute Grief Encounter Ritual’. Here’s how those grieving might use it:

- First, find a quiet space and centre yourself.

- Then set your intention for the ritual on that day. For example, it might be to feel calmer or to appreciate the love you still have for the person who died. It can be anything you want.

- Next, while holding or looking at a symbol of the person who died (such as a photo or article of clothing), name the grief feelings

you are having in that moment and acknowledge their normalcy.

- As you name each new thought and feeling, place your free hand over your heart, pressing gently, then allow your hand to fall to a resting position again.

- If you’re someone who prays, you can pray these thoughts and feelings instead as you step through the ritual.

- Continue feeling, naming, and exploring your emotions for five to ten minutes. When the time is up, take a moment to express your gratitude for anything authentic you thought, felt, and acknowledged during the ritual.

- Close with an affirmation that restates the intention you set at the beginning of the ritual but this time as a present truth. For example, “I love [name of person who died]. I am capable of grieving and loving and healing at the same time.”

An amazing thing about small grief rituals is that they naturally facilitate healing. This is especially true when they’re done regularly, day in and day out. I have seen them work effectively many times in the lives and hearts of grieving people. For those not already comfortable with spiritual practices, the idea of grief rituals might sound a little crazy. But learning to embrace the crazy is what this article series is all about.

2024 AFDA Convention

Adelaide turned on the charm for the 2024 AFDA National Convention from 22-24 March held in conjunction with the AIE National Conference at the Hilton Adelaide.

Members from both Associations enjoyed each other’s company and appreciated the joint learning opportunities, as well as engaging in separate activities suited to their own professional development.

The Convention kicked off with a joint cocktail reception at Sol Rooftop, SkyCity where members of AFDA and AIE enjoyed canapes, a Japanese BBQ and wine from Adelaide’s many wine regions.

National President Kelly Scott and AIE Chairman Andrew Mitchell joined to welcome all attendees and encouraged them to spend time with each other and strengthen the bond between funeral directors and embalmers.

The Convention was officially opened on the Saturday by Past National President, Life Member/ Councillor and Adelaide member

Simon Berry before Past National President and Life Member/ Councillor John Scott conducted a moving memorial service.

Lauren Hardgrove, President of Australasian Cemeteries and Crematoria Association, Andrew Malcolm and Gillian Boyes, President and CEO of Funeral Directors Association of NZ and Andrew Mitchell, Chairman of AIE presented industry updates before National President Kelly Scott and CEO Dale Gilson presented an update on AFDA.

Dr Hannah Gould, who is part of the DeathTech Research Team, then spoke about the fascinating topic of the intersection of death, technology and society and Ben Whitworth from MazWell Group spoke on the role and value of decedent care. Guests then settled into lunch, at which Taryn Hunt from McGlynn Hunt Funerals received her prize for winning the 2023 AFDA Scholarship proudly sponsored by Foresters Financial. As members enjoyed their meal, keynote speaker Anna Meares OAM relayed her inspirational life story about how she overcame a devastating injury to go on to win four individual medals at four consecutive Olympic Games, and collect 18 gold medals, 16 silver medals and 10 bronze medals at Olympic, World and Commonwealth Games level over her 15-year cycling career. The day was topped off with a sports-themed dinner at the Adelaide Oval.

On the final day of the Convention delegates were inspired by the life story of AFDA Past National President, Life Member, Master Funeral Director and AIE Fellow Errol Barrett. With many members involved in family businesses, there is no doubt Errol’s recollection of taking over the family business at the age of 17 and building it into the innovative and community-oriented business it is 60 years later resonated with many.

Kosha Gada, CEO of Memories Group Limited, presented on the impact of AI technology on the industry, digital trends globally and how problems are solved by leveraging technology. Kev Perry from Persec Services was another highlight of the Convention, relaying experiences with emergency and critical incident management and providing tips to navigate any situation confidently. The education sessions concluded with a panel session focused on the future of funerals, the Association and business facilitated by Asha Dooley.

The coaches were loaded up for the last time, taking members to the National Wine Centre for an insightful journey into the Flavors of South Australia via a wine and canapé pairing experience. Partners did not miss out over the weekend, and all reports are that the partner program tours of the iconic Adelaide Central Markets and Hahndorf were greatly enjoyed.

The final dinner on Sunday night was held at the Hilton. Members frocked up for the traditional group photo before enjoying dinner and dancing. Thank you to the sponsors who supported the event, the members who gave their valuable time to attend and AFDA staff who worked so hard to pull it off. We look forward to seeing you in Vietnam for the 2025 AFDA National Convention.

Adelaide AIE Conference

2024

It was an AIE Conference with a difference in 2024. For the first time in history, the Australian Institute of Embalming Conference aligned with the AFDA National Convention.

The 2024 AIE Conference was held at the Hilton Adelaide Hotel on 21-23 March, with AFDA holding their Convention in the same location on 22-24 March. These two national events ran simultaneously, allowing AIE and AFDA members to come together at allocated times providing valuable opportunities to network at social events, hear from keynote presenters and share learnings.

There was a feeling of excitement in the air as attendees registered and received their conference gift of an instruments tray, kindly donated by Millingtons Funeral Services. The Conference opened with a formal dinner, jointly sponsored by MFE and FIDA and held at the Hilton Hotel. During the evening certificates were presented by the training organisations (MFE, FIDA) to those who had completed their studies in mortuary science.

Certificates were also presented to those people who were becoming members of the AIE which included fully qualified embalmers and student embalmers, and to a number of AIE members who were presented with their Fellow

Certificates. The winner of the 2024 AIE Scholarship, Leah Gardiner was also presented with her award. Many thanks to Bowra & O'Dea for their continued sponsorship of the scholarship.

The education sessions started with Ben Whitworth from the MazWell Group Ltd. Ben’s presentation ‘What’s in the Tank? Using Embalming Chemistry to Overcome Challenging Cases’ certainly delivered by conveying to the audience how his team and he had overcome challenging cases through teamwork, innovation and the implementation of expertise and experience. Later in the day Ben’s session ‘Keeping the Casket Open! Treating Challenging Cases to Allow for Positive Viewing Experiences’, built on this theme by presenting real life case studies to illustrate their expertise.

Ian Mellor, QUT Body Bequest Coordinator took attendees on a fascinating journey into how he grew the Body Bequest Program at QUT to become the success it is today. Ian’s tenaciousness and willingness to go above and beyond and develop valuable stakeholder relationships all with an empathic approach have contributed to this achievement.

Wellbeing, self-management and having the support when needed are important to all of us, but even more so for embalmers.

Samantha Young, Clinical Psychologist from Human Psychology presented a valuable session titled ‘Think, Feel, Perform Better’ providing practical tools to assist in wellbeing and signals to be aware of, flagging when you or a colleague may need to access additional support.

The program also featured a twist on the usual 'Meet the Member' segment as AIE Past Chairman John Tidman acknowledged Jennifer Burge on her retirement for her dedication towards embalmning, teaching and her contribution to the AIE and the funeral industry.

One of the advantages of the aligned conference format was the chance for members of AIE and AFDA to get together at social and professional development sessions. All of the conference attendees came together for the AIE & AFDA Joint Cocktail Reception to enjoy the Adelaide skyline, the delicious food and wine that Adelaide is renowned for and each other’s company.

On Saturday, AIE joined AFDA for the first day of the AFDA Convention. Dr Hannah Gould from the University of Melbourne shared the latest in industry technology with her ‘Dead Serious Research: Approaching New Technologies through Evidence-based Deathcare and Ben Whitworth spoke on the value of embalmers in his session ‘The Role and Value of Decedent Care and Embalming in Funeral Service Now and in the Future’. Over lunch, Australian cyclist and Olympian, Anna Meares OAM showed what true perseverance and hard work can do to overcome obstacles and achieve extraordinary results.

The Conference wrapped up with the Chairman’s Gala Dinner with all attendees enjoying the sport’s theme for the night. Thank you to everyone who attended including all the AIE and AFDA members, suppliers, sponsors, family and friends.

Did you know?

The deceased’s super fund (AustralianSuper, Cbus, etc.) may include automatic life insurance that the family may be entitled to.

AFRM Claims Advocacy (ACA) is a proud National Corporate Partner of the Australian Funeral Directors Association (AFDA), working to enhance the support offered to families during times of loss. We make it easier and quicker for families to access the deceased’s life insurance claim.

Here’s why this can be essential for funeral directors and the families they assist:

“It is so easy – we mention to all families where the deceased is under the age of 65 in the initial arrangement, that they may have life insurance available.

Most families have not thought about life insurance – often families comment about the super amount but forget the insurance aspect, and given Bruno conducts a free check on the availability of life insurance for the family, it becomes a great value added service.

We have the conversation, hand over the flyer and we know that Bruno and his team will look after our families with compassion and expertise. ”

- Jesse, William Farmer Funeral Directors

“We have over 280,000 reasons to recommend William Farmer Funerals. We are still grieving at the tragedy, but knowing we are doing everything possible is important – Dad has indicated that the life insurance funds are likely to support me to get into the property market to buy a home – Paul would like that.”

- Peta, sister of Paul who passed away aged 38.

Over $280k was found in Paul’s Super/Insurance.

• Total Care: Funeral arrangers reminding families that the deceased may have life insurance in their super fund demonstrates total care for families. This is care that considers the family's physical, emotional, and nancial wellbeing.

• Easy: Funeral arrangers are provided a simple script and yer which they can hand to families. Once the family has the yer, there is nothing more for the funeral arranger to do. From here, Bruno and his team get to work and check if the deceased had life insurance in their superannuation (for free).

• Referrals: Families who are receiving our help often comment on how the funeral home has thought of everything. Most families are not aware that the deceased had automatic life insurance in their super fund, so when funds are found, it often exceeds expectations.

The ACA flyer is available for your families.

Contact and Support: To make it easier for your families, contact ACA at aca@afrm.com.au or call Bruno on 1300 013 328

AFRM Claims Advocacy Welcome New National Corporate Partner

AFRM Claims

Advocacy is excited to be a National Corporate Partner of the Australian Funeral Directors Association (AFDA). This partnership enables funeral homes to provide total care for your families.

AFRM Claims Advocacy simplifies and expedites the process for families to access life insurance claims. According to Bruno Muraca, CEO of AFRM Claims Advocacy, it is likely that deceased individuals under the age of 65 have unclaimed life insurance in their super fund (e.g., AustralianSuper, Cbus, Hostplus). When funeral arrangers inform families about the possibility of life insurance in the deceased's super fund, it shows a level of care that extends beyond the funeral, addressing the physical, emotional, and financial needs of the family.

How can we help your families?

The availability of life insurance applies to all families where the deceased is of working age (under the age of 65). To make it easy for funeral arrangers to remind families that the deceased may have life insurance in their super fund, AFRM Claims Advocacy have a personalised conversation script that you can

use to position the help available to families.

We also have a flyer which can accompany your personal conversation, therefore making it easy for families to get our help and access the deceased’s life insurance claim.

Why help families with life insurance claim?

The common theme with families we have helped is they say, “the funeral home has thought of everything”.

Delivering peace of mind at a time of need, which extends beyond the funeral, makes your service one to remember. When a loved one passes away, they can leave an emotional and financial gap in the family.

of life insurance for the family, it becomes a great value-added service.” – Jesse Cattell, William Farmer Funeral Directors

When to have the conversation with the family

delivering financial comfort for both the family and the funeral home

The intent of life insurance is to address the financial gap, but industry research shows that less than 40% of working Australians are aware there is automatic life insurance in super funds, so reminding the family becomes an important conversation.

“Most families have not thought about life insurance – often families comment about the super amount but forget to check the insurance aspect, and given Bruno conducts a free check on the availability

Most funeral arrangers choose to have the conversation at the initial arrangement. The advantage of the family engaging us in the early stages of preparing the funeral, enables us to check the availability of life insurance (for free), and communicate to the family the life insurance funds available – delivering financial comfort for both the family and the funeral home.

Let us help your families

AFRM Claims Advocacy can arrange a virtual meeting with your funeral arrangers (15 min) so that at the end of the session, they know how they can position our help to all families where the deceased is under the age of 65. In addition, we can arrange the flyers to be sent to you, simply by calling or emailing Bruno on 1300 013 328 or email aca@afrm.com.au.

Industry Spotlight Compassionate Communities Australia Launch

Compassionate Communities

Australia (CCAus) was officially launched by the Western Australian Governor at Government House in Perth on 27 March 2024.

This significant event, attended by national and international colleagues both in person and online, marks a pivotal moment for Compassionate Communities in Australia. Founder of Compassionate Communities, Professor Allan Kellehear, highlighted the importance of this initiative, stating, “CCAus is a significant international development. It is incredibly important in the history of public health and also in the history of hospice and palliative care in Australia.”

Compassionate Communities

Australia aims to foster connectedness and compassion by collaborating with communities, industries, and the health sector. Their goal is to create a supportive environment for individuals facing life’s most challenging times, such as life-threatening or life-limiting illnesses, chronic disabilities, caregiving, frailty, aging, dementia, dying, and grief.

The founding team of Compassionate Communities Australia includes Professor

Samar Aoun, Dr Stephen Ginsborg, Dr Joanne Doran, and Harpreet Kalsi-Smith. These individuals bring diverse expertise in research, palliative care, primary care, community development, and personal experience. Their combined efforts aim to establish CCAus as a leading national peak body.

During the launch, Professor Aoun described the vision of CCAus: “This national notfor-profit organisation aims to become a hub of knowledge, skills, and resources for community-led solutions that lead to social and systems change.”

What are Compassionate Communities?

Compassionate Communities practice an ethos of caring for one another during life’s most testing times. This approach involves individuals, families, neighborhoods, workplaces, schools, health services, government, faith-based organisations, and voluntary services working together to provide support.

The benefits of Compassionate Communities include:

• Enhanced feelings of being cared for and supported during times of need.

• Significant improvement in social connectedness.

• Increased support networks and community links.

• Improved ability to engage in daily activities.

• Financial savings through reduced hospital service usage.

• A holistic approach addressing the social, practical, and emotional aspects of care.

Role of CCAus

CCAus is committed to supporting communities in reclaiming their central role in caring, dying, and grieving. By promoting community-based caregiving networks, CCAus aims to empower individuals to engage with serious illness and death in a supportive environment.

As a national peak body, CCAus seeks to:

• Build the capacity of Compassionate Communities across Australia.

• Serve as a hub of knowledge and skills for community-led solutions.

• Drive social and systems change.

Compassionate Communities Australia envisions a society where everyone can live well until their last breath and die surrounded by those they care about. By fostering a culture of compassion and connection, CCAus encourages everyone to participate in creating supportive environments for those in need. Association News

NSW/ACT Division

GENERAL MEETING

NSW/ACT members and sponsors met in Orange over the weekend of 3-4 May. The weekend commenced with a Council Meeting on Friday afternoon followed by a casual dinner at the Orange Ex Services Club. On Saturday members heard from a range of speakers including Pip Brett, a local entrepreneur from Orange who shared her authentic leadership and business approach; Ben Finn from NSW Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages; Jennifer Hickey, CEO, CCNSW and Lilia Szarkski, Relationships Australia, who spoke about mediation skills.

The NSW Councillors have worked hard to forge strong relationships with industry stakeholders and welcomed the effort from Ben and Jennifer in taking time out from their weekend to come to Orange and update members.

Creating seamless and simplified processes and communications with funeral directors is a focus for NSW Births, Deaths and Marriages, while Jennifer took on board member concerns regarding the interment contract and expansion of the levies. The weekend concluded with wine tasting and dinner at Rowlee Wines, showcasing Orange’s flair for gourmet food and delicious wine.

CCNSW

NSW/ACT members continue to have concerns in relation to the Interment Industry Scheme, the new model contract and the expansion of the interment services levy, which are being introduced from 1 July. Despite opportunities to ask questions at the stakeholder engagement webinars and face to face meetings, there is no certainty that funeral director concerns will be taken into consideration.

Jennifer Hickey, CEO, CCNSW attended the NSW/ACT General Meeting weekend to outline the scheme and respond to questions. Key issues from members relate to the cost to the customer, communication flows, training and education, extra administrative load, implementation, and timing. AFDA have lodged a detailed submission outlining these concerns.

METROPOLITAN MEMORIAL PARKS

Asha Dooley met with Denise Ora, Metropolitan Memorial Parks CEO to discuss the concerns of NSW members with the first draft of the MOU. Divisional Councillors continue to work with Metropolitan Memorial Parks staff to refine the MOU.

BIRTHS, DEATHS AND MARRIAGES (BDM)

NSW/ACT Council have forged strong relationships with the team at BDM and meet on a fortnightly basis. Ben Finn, Business Manager Performance attended the NSW/ ACT General Meeting weekend in Orange to provide a face-to-face update to members, which was appreciated.

BDM are making a range of changes to their communications channels with funeral directors. From 1 July, the phone service is being replaced by a dedicated email response service which will ensure responses are optimised and streamlined. A survey to funeral directors has been circulated encouraging feedback to identify pain points and will inform the development of other communication channels such as purpose built information videos for funeral directors.

Victorian Division

EVENTS AND TRAINING

The Division successfully held the second Zone Meeting of 2024 in Warragul on 15 May, attracting over 60 members. The event featured a presentation on navigating aged care reforms and a new ‘Local Member Firm Profile’ segment, both of which received positive feedback. Planning is complete for the remaining Zone Meetings: the third in Yarrawonga on 10 July will include a presentation on resilience and leadership by former MP Tania Maxwell, and the re-introduced Metro Zone Meeting on 16 October at Mercure Doncaster will feature a guest Coroner and a tour of the State mortuary.

All spots sold out to the Introduction to Mortuary Care training day, facilitated by Mortuary and Funeral Educators (MFE) on 1 June in Melbourne. The course was tailored to meet the needs of each individual participant and required completion of the AFDA Funeral Learning Hub's Infectious Disease Course prior to attendance.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

The full program has been released for the Joint TAS/VIC AGM Weekend, scheduled from August 23-25 in Hobart at Hotel Grand Chancellor. Keynote

speaker Sam Cawthorn, along with education speakers Mitch McPherson and AFDA Past National President, Life Member/Councillor Darren Eddy, will headline the education program. A casual dinner on Friday night will bring Tasmanian and Victorian Members together, followed by a formal Saturday night dinner off-site at the new Italian restaurant, Fellini, located on Hobart's waterfront. A fun 'Meet the Maker' afternoon activity is planned to provide members with a taste of Hobart, including a visit from AFDA Past National President and Life Member/Councillor, the Hon Stephen Parry, who will share insights into his distillery.

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE SCHEME (FAS)

Two recommendations have been tentatively accepted by the Victorian Government for incorporation into the draft FAS guidelines following the Victorian Council's feedback submission late last year. The guidelines will replace the Victims of Crime Assistance Tribunal (VOCAT) and bring changes to the way families apply for financial assistance for funerals when they have lost a loved one who is a victim of crime.

VICTORIAN DEATH STATISTICS

The Victorian Council has signed a oneyear contract with the Births, Deaths and Marriages (BDM) Data Team for custom quarterly reports on Victorian death statistics. This valuable new VIC member benefit will provide detailed data on deaths by location (postcode and type – hospital, nursing home, residence) and disposal type, allowing members to effectively plan resources. The Council have an upcoming stakeholder meeting with BDM where they will be pleased to report improvements to overall service delivery since writing to the State Government last year suggesting additional Registry resources.

CORONERS COURT OF VICTORIA (CCOV)

The VIC Council had a positive first meeting with CCOV's CEO in February as part of the Council's goal to re-establish the Division's relationship with CCOV. Pleasingly both parties agreed to maintaining an open line of communication, and scheduling meetings to discuss any pertinent matters as required. Additionally, the Council has secured a Coroner to speak at the upcoming Zone Meeting in October, with CCOV agreeing for a tour of the State mortuary for the first time in many years.

CEMETERIES SECTOR

The Victorian Division had an introductory meeting with the CEO of Remembrance Parks Central Victoria in February, followed by a positive stakeholder meeting with the Greater Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust (GMCT) in May. The VIC Council is looking forward to its next stakeholder meeting with the Southern Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust (SMCT) to discuss various matters on behalf of members and the Council.

We are also fortunate to have Sarah White and Lisa Boeyen, who have lived experience supporting loved ones through VAD, who will provide members with valuable perspectives to better serve families who have a loved one opting for VAD. Finally, AFDA’s National Education Manager, Edwina Ellicott, will present a session on the Funeral Learning Hub.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

Please note that the date of this event has changed and is now being held from 13-15 September due to venue availability. Councillors Natasha Siebert and Sharyn Moll continue to hold regular discussions with Births, Deaths and Marriages about improving processes and issues affecting the timely completion of death certificates. Council welcomes feedback from members to support requested changes to procedures. The Division continues to escalate its concerns about excessive mould and decomposition affecting bodies being released from the State Mortuary.

ADVOCACY

The WA Council’s main priority in the last six months has been on preparing feedback on the Review of the Cemeteries Act 1986 and Cremations Act 1929. All feedback received by the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries (LGCSI) is now being considered and recommendations will be made to the Minister based on that feedback. The Council previously reviewed draft changes to the Tasmanian Burial and Cremation Regulations which encompassed definitions for alternative body disposal methods. The Council is actively seeking to engage with the proposed Alkaline Hydrolysis operator to address Council's concerns

funeral directors to manage vicarious trauma and Kev Perry from Persec Services who shared some practical strategies for creating safer workplaces.

THANK YOU TO LAUREL SHANLEY

Long standing Queensland Divisional Council Member and current Treasurer, Laurel Shanley, has announced her retirement from the Queensland Divisional Council. Laurel has been a dedicated AFDA and Queensland member, giving her time freely while holding Council member and senior roles such as Treasurer and Junior Vice President. The Queensland Council would like to acknowledge Laurel’s hard work and

about regulatory compliance, environmental impacts, and to clarify processes for handling and storing deceased individuals, including the final disposition of coffins and caskets.

MAGISTRATES COURT

The TAS Council has drafted a response to the Coroner's Court letter which addressed Councillor's concerns of a member experiencing delays during clearances of deceased persons at the Court. Since the Coroner's response, the impacted member has not encountered further delays, suggesting the issue may be resolved.

dedication and thank her for her valuable contribution.

ADVOCACY

Following on from the members’ concerns regarding the eDeath Registration System being shut down Ryan Vasquez, Acting Client Relationship Manager from Births, Deaths and Marriages (BDM) and his colleagues Tanya Sander and Matthew Kleu, joined the QLD Divisional Council Meeting on 7 February 2024 to discuss member concerns. Since this meeting, the Division has written to BDM expressing their concern that eDeaths was closing from 26 April and removing batch upload capacity.

The QLD Division wrote to the Department of Justice & Attorney-General (DJAG) alerting them to the impact the change in hospital location for autopsies has had on funeral directors in Far North Queensland who have government contracts for police transfers. DJAG has since advised that they have reached out to affected contactors to work with them to reach an appropriate solution, ensuring there are no delays to families.

AIE Update Industry News

The aligned AIE Conference and AFDA National Convention recently held in March at the Hilton Hotel in Adelaide was a huge success for members of both the AIE and AFDA.

2024 AIE Conference

Over 85 people attended the AIE Conference held from 21-23 March in Adelaide and when combined with the AFDA National Convention held from 22-24 March there were 340 people in attendance during the conferences. Attendees from both associations enjoyed the company and networking that the aligned conferences allowed at various times when both AIE and AFDA came together for either education sessions or social occasions, while still enjoying the education sessions and social activities in their individual programs.

The AIE Conference attendees survey revealed the following session highlights: Ben Whitworth's ‘What’s in the Tank? Using Embalming Chemistry

to Overcome Challenging Cases’ followed by ‘Keeping the Casket Open! Treating Challenging Cases to Allow for Positive Viewing Experiences’. These were topped off by the education session for both associations delivered by Ben titled ‘The Role and Value of Decedent Care and Embalming in Funeral Service Now and in the Future’.

Conference attendees also enjoyed education sessions by QUT Body Bequest Coordinator Ian Mellor who took them on a journey into the Body Bequest Program at QUT and Clincal Psycholgist, Samantha Young who provided practical tools to assist in wellbeing for ourselves and our colleagues.

Social activity and networking highlights for both associations were the joint cocktail reception at the Sol Rooftop Bar at SkyCity and the joint keynote speaker luncheon with an excellent presentation by Anna Meares OAM. While these activities were enjoyed immensely so to were the usual other social activities enjoyed while at Conference.

During this year’s AIE Conference the usual ‘Meet the Member’ session was re-named to ‘Meet the Retired Member’ in recognition of AIE Past Chairman Jennifer Burge on her retirement. Immediate AIE Past Chairman John Tidman asked Jennifer about her career in the funeral industry and what the future holds. This gave AIE members an insight into Jennifer’s dedication to the funeral industry and more importantly embalming, and it is Jennifer’s dedication towards embalming and teaching her FIDA students that both the AIE and AFDA are extremely grateful for.

For those AIE members who were unable to join us for the AIE Conference or for attendees who may wish to re-watch any of the education sessions you can access the session recordings and view the gallery of photos from the Conference in the Members Lounge on the AIE website.

AIE Board Casual Vacancy

Earlier this year AIE Board Director Kim Browne stepped down from the AIE Board for personal reasons. Kim has been on the AIE Board for a number of years and during

that time has contributed to the continued professional growth of AIE and its membership in South Australia both as a Board Director and CPD State Coordinator. The AIE Board would like to thank Kim for her valuable contribution.

To fill the vacancy on the AIE Board expressions of interest in a casual capacity were called for at the AIE Conference and via member email. Due to the number of responses received, the credentials of the applicants and the short period of time until the October AGM the Board decided to keep this position vacant until the October AGM when prior to the AGM nominations for consideration to join the AIE Board will be called for. Thank you to those members who took the time to respond, and the Board asks that you consider nominating again when the nomination forms are emailed prior to the AGM.

AIE Strategic Plan

As with any association you are only as strong as your membership and though the AIE has strong membership it must continue to grow and evolve as we move into the future. AIE will continue to do some of the things we have done well in the past but there are some things we acknowledge that could be done better for both our members and our employer members and with this in mind a survey was emailed to all AIE members requesting their feedback to assist the Board in planning for the future. Responses from both the AIE member survey and AIE conference attendee survey will be discussed at the next AIE Board Meeting and will help formulate the AIE Strategic Plan.

Finally thank you to all the AIE and AFDA members, sponsors and supporters who were able to attend the AIE and AFDA aligned conferences. As we move into the winter months can I please ask everyone to take care, look after yourselves and importantly look after one another.

ACCA Update Industry News

On behalf of myself and ACCA Chief Executive Officer Ben Kelly, I would like to express our gratitude to AFDA for inviting us to attend and speak at the recent AFDA National Convention in Adelaide.

The hospitality shown to us by all AFDA and AIE attendees at the Convention was outstanding, and we both saw it as a wonderful opportunity to exchange ideas, address common issues, and forge stronger connections across the industry. Participating in each other's conferences enables us to unite the industry and ultimately provide better service to the community in its time of need.

In 2023, the ACCA Board convened a series of meetings to develop a new strategic plan. Recognising the significant changes in the sector in recent years, it was imperative for ACCA to adapt to continue supporting our members, the sector, and the wider community. Societal views and expectations regarding death, funerals,

interments, and memorialisation are evolving, necessitating adaptation within our sector to lead the ongoing conversations and meet community needs effectively.

A central focus of the ACCA strategic plan was to enhance collaboration within the Australian Cemetery and Crematoria industry and the broader Deathcare sector, both domestically and internationally. ACCA is actively fostering collaboration with state associations in Australia, our suppliers, and international associations to exchange knowledge and support one another in navigating the changing industry landscape.

Participating in each other's conferences enables us to unite the industry

Strengthening our relationship with the AFDA and its members is integral to this strategic plan. By working together, our two associations and respective members can drive positive and enduring changes within the sector. Through idea sharing, addressing common challenges, and mutual participation in events, we can tackle many industry issues collectively.

This collaborative spirit inspired the theme for our National Conference later this year: ‘Shaping the Future Together’. From 30 September to 2 October 2024, ACCA will host its national conference at the Oval Hotel in Adelaide. Planning is well underway

for this pivotal event, which will bring together industry professionals, experts, and stakeholders to explore innovative solutions and relevant topics such as limited tenure burials, cemetery safety, cultural interments, and grief management. Distinguished speakers, including Australia's beloved gardener Costa Georgiadis and the team behind the Good Mourning podcast, will deliver insightful talks.

The conference will also include a tour of the worldclass Evergreen community precinct at Enfield Memorial Park, along with a trade show highlighting cutting-edge technology. ACCA extends a warm invitation to AFDA Members to participate, offering valuable networking and learning opportunities.

In the coming months, you can expect to see several exciting new initiatives from ACCA and the sector resulting from our increased focus on collaboration. The ACCA Board and our members are enthusiastic about the journey ahead and eagerly anticipate working closely with AFDA Members to shape the future of our sector together.

Dying to Know Day is a vibrant national campaign dedicated to breaking down the barriers that make conversations about death and dying uncomfortable.

The focus of the 2024 event, culminating on 8 August, is around personalising final arrangements and building community. This theme aims to encourage people to think deeply about their end-of-life plans and to communicate their wishes clearly to their loved ones. By fostering these

conversations, the campaign seeks to ensure that everyone’s end-of-life preferences are known and respected.

The aim is to help all Australians to feel supported and inspired by their own wishes for their final arrangements and help to dismantle the misconception that end of life planning must be a solitary endeavour.

Dying to Know Day was originally an initiative of The Groundswell Project Australia (which is now a fully owned entity of Proveda Ltd). Now in its twelfth significant year, it is important to remember that Dying to Know Day, is more than just a ‘day’. It is a transformational campaign focusing on ensuring that people have access to a good death, and that their wishes are at the forefront for others.
