The concept of ‘Art on the Floor’ is one that multi-international award-winning Australian rug designer, Jenny Jones, is passionate about.
Jenny Jones Rugs are bespoke generational pieces sustainably handcrafted in pure wool or silk by artisan rugmakers. They are considered investment pieces and are curated by high-end interior designers and clients all over the world.

“Ideally, a beautiful rug in the right colour, size, and design should be the foundation of your room. It then becomes the anchor for all the other furnishings. My rugs can be truly transformative and they are created so that they will last for generations.”
Jenny and her team of design consultants at her Perth and Melbourne showrooms love helping people choose the perfect rug for their space.
“I recommend clients come to our showroom view our collection and bring with them as much information as possible about the space they want to put a rug in. That includes photos of their existing furnishings and artwork, as well as the room measurements.”
Jenny says that colour is the most important element when selecting a rug. To help with this process she provides ‘colour poms’ which are little tufts of hand-spun wool and pure silk colour samples.
“It’s a matter of deciding on a colour pom. Once I know what colours the client prefers, we can then work out the style, whether they want a contemporary or traditional design.”
Jenny has been involved in the rug trade for more than 30 years, after a stint living in Turkey with her young family in the early 1990s. Upon her return to her hometown of Perth, she brought a selection of traditional Turkish rugs with her, which she quickly sold, and so began her business importing and selling rugs. By the early 2000s Jenny had switched her focus to design.
“I realised that contemporary tastes were changing. People didn’t want the really heavy dark traditional rugs anymore”. So Jenny took matters into her own hands, and began hand-drawing designs and establishing her own colour poms.
“It was very painstaking, I would spend hours drawing then I would fax my designs to my producers in India and they would make up my rugs for me.”
Later Jenny learned to use CAD software and this enabled her to create design templates so she could ‘cut and paste’ elements of her designs and colours to create bespoke pieces, which quickly proved in high demand by international interior designers – each pixel representing one knot in the final design allowing her to have total design control.
Jenny has now created more than 1,870 bespoke rugs for clients all around the world, including a collection commissioned for Sydney’s Government House.
Jenny Jones Rugs’ current range covers all interior styles from Hamptons and Coastal to Ultra-Contemporary as well as continuing to celebrate traditional rug design. Her Transitional range translates timeless motifs into modern styles while the Classics range also uses traditional designs in contemporary colour pallets. Jenny’s stunning ‘Wildflowers’ range, is inspired by nature and the Australian bush around which she lives.
