The charm of a stylish log cabin has been reimagined through the lens of Scandinavian design at the norsu cabin.

Ever since norsu founders Nat Wheeler and Kristy Sadlier opened the doors to their very first norsu store, the dream of purchasing their very own norsu property was born. Customers would visit the store and enthuse about how much they loved the store and how being there made them feel so calm and ‘at home’. It birthed the idea of a place they could design themselves in which guests could stay and truly unwind, meanwhile immersing themselves in norsu’s famed Scandi-style products.

Nat’s real estate husband Dan (Wheeler, of Marshall White Armadale) shared the Macedon listing with them one evening and it was love at first sight for the business owners, who had first met in mothers’ group years before. After spontaneously making an offer moments after the initial inspection, by that evening it was secured, and the dream of making norsu short stay accommodation, soon to be the norsu Cabin, was about to become reality.

‘The uniqueness of this property really stood out to us, I mean, how many log cabins do you see in Australia?’, says Kristy.

‘We loved that it reminded us of a quaint retreat in the heart of Scandinavia - a nod to the ‘Scandi’ roots of our retail business, and the fact that it was located less than an hour’s drive from Melbourne had us sold!’

The duo picked up the keys on a Monday and had the builders onsite the next day. They were already in reno-mode with Nat’s home renovation taking place concurrently which was the perfect synergy, as they were able to piggyback off the stages and selections and knew exactly what needed to take place in what order. Being able to streamline this process helped enormously and in total the renovation took just four months to complete.

Believed to have been built in the mid-1990s, the retro-inspired home featured a quirky A-frame design with timber log walls, pitched ceilings and landscaped gardens.

‘The biggest challenge we faced was the logs themselves,’ says Kristy.

Neither the external or internal log walls could be moved, so they were unable adjust the floorplan and needed to work within the home’s existing footprint. The exterior was eventually painted black for a modern touch, while the existing logs inside were carefully sanded back by hand, before being treated to a lime wash to reveal a restful blonde timber.

The magic of the norsu Cabin is unmistakeable.

There’s enough room for up to eight people across the three bedrooms and there’s even a concrete bath overlooking the rows of silver birch trees in the gardens.

‘There are some homes that just have that ‘feeling’ that you can't quite explain - you need to experience it to understand - and this Cabin has it in spades!’ explains Kristy.

Not surprisingly, the Cabin has been in high demand since listing for short term rental, and Nat and Kristy’s families too enjoy the Macedon retreat.

‘We’ve had the pleasure of spending several precious weekends there with our families together so far,’ says Kristy. ‘Watching the kids make memories by exploring the gardens and toasting marshmallows while the adults enjoy great conversation by the fire over a cheese board and a nice bottle of red is what really puts a smile on our faces.’

The norsu Cabin features design and styling by Norsu Design. The Cabin sleeps up to eight guests and is now available to book. ■

The Fluted Revival

In the world of interior design, certain elements manage to transcend fleeting trends, becoming timeless features that continue to captivate homeowners and designers alike. One such element that has firmly established its place in contemporary home aesthetics is the fluted finish. With its origins in classical architecture, fluting has experienced a resurgence, bringing texture, depth, and sophistication to modern interiors.

Fluting, characterised by a series of shallow, concave grooves running vertically along a surface, has a history dating back to ancient Greek and Roman columns. Today, this architectural detail has been reimagined and applied to various elements within the home, from statement walls to kitchen cabinetry, creating a striking blend of classic elegance and modern simplicity.

The appeal of fluted finishes lies in their versatility and ability to elevate any space. In kitchens, fluted island fronts or cabinet doors add a touch of luxury without overwhelming the space. The play of light and shadow across the grooved surfaces creates visual interest, transforming utilitarian elements into artistic focal points. Similarly, in bathrooms, fluted vanities or shower enclosures introduce a spa-like serenity, their rhythmic patterns evoking a sense of calm and refinement.

Beyond cabinetry, fluted wall panels have emerged as a popular choice for adding character to living rooms, bedrooms, and entryways. These panels serve as an alternative to traditional wainscoting or wallpaper, offering a three-dimensional texture that engages the eye and invites touch. Whether applied floorto-ceiling or as a partial wall treatment, fluted panels can dramatically alter the perception of space, making rooms feel more expansive.

The versatility of fluted finishes extends to their material applications. While wood remains a popular choice, particularly in rich, dark tones that highlight the depth of the grooves, designers are increasingly experimenting with other materials. Glass, metal, and even concrete are being fluted to create stunning architectural elements. Fluted glass partitions, for instance, offer privacy without sacrificing light transmission, making them ideal for open-plan living spaces or shower enclosures.

One of the most exciting developments in the use of fluted finishes is their application in furniture design. From sideboard fronts to bedhead designs, fluting adds a bespoke quality to pieces, elevating them from functional items to works of art. This attention to detail reflects a growing appreciation for craftsmanship and uniqueness in home furnishings.

Colour plays a crucial role in the impact of fluted finishes. While natural wood tones and neutral hues remain popular for their timeless appeal, bold colour choices are gaining traction. Deep greens, rich blues, and even dramatic blacks are being used to

accentuate the three-dimensional quality of fluting, creating statement pieces that anchor room designs.

The ability of fluted finishes to add texture and interest without overwhelming a space makes them a versatile choice for a wide range of design styles, from minimalist modern to luxe contemporary. Moreover, the tactile quality of fluted surfaces resonates with a desire for sensory experiences within the home, a trend that has gained significance in recent years.

For those looking to incorporate fluted finishes into their homes, the key is balance. A fluted feature wall or statement piece of furniture can serve as a room's centrepiece, complemented by simpler, smoother surfaces to avoid visual overload. The scale of fluting can also be varied to suit different spaces and purposes, from fine, delicate grooves for a subtle texture to broader, more pronounced channels for dramatic effect.

Fluted finishes represent a perfect marriage of form and function in interior design. As homeowners and designers continue to seek ways to create unique, personalised spaces, fluting has become a key element in modern interior design. Whether used boldly as a central design feature or subtly as an accent, fluted finishes offer endless possibilities for adding sophistication and character to any home. ■

Egypt Unveiled

In a spectacular celebration of ancient Egyptian art and culture, the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) has opened its doors to ‘Pharaoh’, an extraordinary exhibition that transports visitors through three millennia of history. Launched on June 14, this Melbourne-exclusive presentation is set to captivate audiences until October 6.

As part of the Victorian Government’s Melbourne Winter Masterpieces series, Pharaoh stands as the most extensive ancient Egyptian exhibition ever mounted in Australia. Curated in collaboration with the British Museum, it showcases over 500 objects, many of which are making their Australian debut. This monumental collection represents the largest international exhibition the British Museum has presented in its illustrious 270-year history.

The exhibition spans from the 1st Dynasty (c.3000 BCE) to the Roman period (3rd century CE), offering a comprehensive journey through the lives, myths, and images of Egypt’s successive rulers. Visitors will encounter meticulously crafted examples of art, design, and architecture commissioned by and celebrating some of Egypt’s most renowned pharaohs, including Tutankhamun, Ramses II, Queen Nefertari, and Khufu, the builder of the Great Pyramid of Giza.

Among the exhibition’s highlights are spectacular examples of sculpture and statuary that epitomise the iconic image of the pharaoh. A striking green siltstone Head of Thutmose III showcases the timeless representation of Egyptian royalty, while a larger-than-life limestone statue of Ramses II depicts the famous king as a high priest making offerings to the gods.

The Seated statue of Pharaoh Sety II, considered the most complete sculpture of a pharaoh in the British Museum's collection, offers visitors a rare glimpse into the exceptional craftsmanship of ancient Egyptian sculptors.

The grandeur of ancient Egypt is further evoked through monumental architecture, including a limestone wall from an Old Kingdom mastaba tomb standing nearly 2.5 metres high.

An enormous granite statue of a lion, weighing approximately three tonnes, bears the cartouche of Tutankhamun, illustrating the importance of dynastic succession in ancient Egyptian culture.

A unique feature of the exhibition is its comprehensive display of ancient Egyptian jewellery, comprising over 180 pieces. This collection, the largest loan of ancient Egyptian jewellery in the British Museum’s history, reveals the sophisticated craftsmanship of Egyptian artisans through exquisite necklaces, amulets, girdles, and rings crafted from precious metals and semi-precious stones.

The exhibition provides an immersive experience, with a contemporary layout and soundscape that evokes the timelessness of ancient Egypt. To complement the main exhibition, the NGV has curated ‘Ancient Egypt for Kids’, a free exhibition introducing younger audiences to Egyptian art and culture through engaging, hands-on activities.

As winter well and truly settles over Melbourne, Pharaoh offers visitors a unique opportunity to delve into the mysteries and marvels of ancient Egypt. With its unprecedented scale and scope, this exhibition is a landmark event in Australia’s cultural calendar, promising to educate, inspire, and awe visitors of all ages. ■ LEARN MORE
