PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

I am pleased to present the 169th Annual Report of the Australian Hotels Association – Victorian Branch. I’d like to begin by acknowledging the effective leadership of Paddy O’Sullivan as Chief Executive Officer of the Association, ensuring a seamless transition from his predecessor Brian Kearney at the conclusion of the 2015/16 Financial Year. Paddy’s first 12 months as CEO has been characterised by action and results while maintaining stability and confidence in the process. This past year has, without a doubt, advanced

the position of the Association with the introduction of new member events, a restructured and reinvigorated AHA (Vic) Administration Team and significant outcomes for members. I’ll start with AHA (Vic)’s lobbying efforts that have led to significant member outcomes over the past 12 months across the key pillars of liquor, gaming, wagering, smoking and workplace relations. Managing reforms in these key areas have been effectively achieved through political engagement in representing and advancing the interests of members. It’s pleasing to reflect of the

fact that we benefit from effective working relationships with both the Daniel Andrews’ State Labor Government and the Matthew Guy State Opposition which typically provides for consultation in policy development affecting members’ interests. Members also benefit from professionally planned and executed AHA (Vic) industry events which represent more than just a convivial setting to enjoy first-class food and beverage in award-winning venues. These well-orchestrated events are fundamental to the success of our Association where members from across the state reconnect, corporate partners derive value from networking directly with hotel owners (the decision makers) and other key stakeholders gain valuable insights into the industry that we represent. Over the past 12 months, AHA (Vic) events have continued to evolve, and this past year has been no exception with the needs of our diverse membership front of mind. Our Annual Cocktail Party outgrew the AHA (Vic) Bar and has successfully migrated to the prestigious Park Hyatt, a fitting location, providing the choice of both indoor and outdoor spaces and accommodating our growing member/partner networks. Our Annual General Meeting Luncheon has also outgrown the Grand Hyatt Melbourne and has moved to the character-rich Hotel Windsor, for a final opportunity to enjoy the historic hotel prior to the commencement of its much publicised renovations.

Paddy O’Sullivan, Peter Burnett AM, Premier Daniel Andrews

6 | 2017 ANNUAL REPORT AUSTRALIAN HOTELS ASSOCIATION (VICTORIA)

We have re-launched our exclusive Council Dinner (July) with its new home at the

Park Hyatt to recognise the longstanding partnerships of both Carlton and United Breweries and Treasury Wine Estates. Each company enjoyed the benefit of having a captive audience made up of AHA (Vic) Councillors and their partners creating an elite event to showcase and provide commentary on their first-class product portfolios. The past year has also seen the introduction of new events such as; the ‘Pubovation’ Pub Tour, the Pub Performance Forum and Women’s Network, specifically designed to meet the emerging needs of our diverse membership. The AHA (Vic) Administration Team, led by Paddy O’Sullivan, has undergone a significant transformation over the past year with many new enthusiastic faces leading to an injection of fresh ideas, an enviable team culture and invigorated approach to servicing members’ needs and partners’ returns. Some of these strategic personnel changes include; a fulltime in-house TAA (Vic) General Manager (Dougal Hollis), a dedicated Communications Coordinator (Ashleigh Brice) and a Senior Manager of Membership and Industry Engagement (Kimberley Malcolm). These structural changes to the AHA (Vic) Team have also allowed for Alex Bourjaili to engage with members at the ‘coal face’, doubling our resources on the road. Our constitution, the rules governing the conduct of AHA (Vic), has been recently reviewed ensuring that we not only have regard to requirements of the Fair Work (Registered Organisations) Act but also modernise some ‘pounds and shillings’ references of the original document. The updated constitution of AHA (Vic) removes provisions that have become inefficient

over time and considers the evolution of the Association. As the Association continues to evolve, remaining relevant to the needs of its diverse, growing membership, we do so in the world’s most liveable city. I’m not surprised that Melbourne has, for the seventh consecutive time, been awarded the converted accolade of the World’s Most Liveable City. The significant capital investment made by pubs and hotels complements the broader appeal of Melbourne. We work hard at maintaining this high standard of our first class hospitality offer and we should naturally be proud of this crowning achievement of our world-class City.

In closing, I would like to take this opportunity to express my appreciation to members of the AHA (Vic) Executive and Council for their input throughout the year. I also take this opportunity to thank our CEO Paddy O’Sullivan for his inclusive management and leadership of the AHA (Vic) Administration Team. Cheers,

Peter M. Burnett AM President Australian Hotels Association (Victoria)

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER’S MESSAGE

The overarching performance priority for the Australian Hotels Association (Victoria) for 2016/17 was the delivery of professional administration to effectively service the interests of members while operating in accordance with the requirements of the Fair Work (Registered Organisations) Act 2009. STRATEGIC OBJECTIVES In accordance with the 2015/16 Business Plan, the strategic objectives of AHA (Vic) were to: • Protect, promote and advance the interests and rights of members; • Uphold and promote the quality, integrity and reputation of the hotel industry; • Provide timely, effective, relevant and valueadding services to members; • In collaboration with key partners, develop strategies to promote on-premises trade; • Create a supportive forum for the next generation of publicans to network, discuss challenges and voice concerns which may direct specific lobbying efforts; • Recognise and promote the diversity of our Council Group and Executive Board by creating an environment that values a diverse range of views, knowledge and experiences which can be leveraged to maximise our service delivery capabilities; • Develop and maintain value-adding partnerships with key industry stakeholders to the benefit of members and such partners; and • As an organisation, achieve best practice in the administration association sector.

GENERAL PRIORITIES FOR 2016/17 INCLUDED: • Maintaining effective working relationships with the Daniel Andrews’ State Labor Government and the Matthew Guy State Coalition Opposition to ensure that appropriate attention was provided to pub and hotel interests in policy development, including legislative implementation; • Establishing and maintaining appropriate working relationships across all relevant Ministerial offices, Government Departments, regulatory agencies, enforcement bodies to enable effective advocacy and representation in the interest of pubs and hotels; • Further promotion of the need for a policy and program agenda by the State Labor Government that facilitates responsible innovation and growth within Victoria’s licensed hospitality industry; • Active pursuit of reasonable workplace relations reforms to the benefit of employers in conjunction with the AHA National program for reform of the Hospitality Industry (General) Award through the four-yearly reviews of modern awards by the Fair Work Commission; • Provision of professional representation services to accommodation hotels through TAA (Vic) directed to issues management and initiatives to protect and advance the interests of respective members; • Conducting a program of member events to enhance business development and commercial partner networking opportunities;

8 | 2017 ANNUAL REPORT AUSTRALIAN HOTELS ASSOCIATION (VICTORIA)

• Providing measured engagement with various media representatives to promote pubs and hotels as safe, affordable and firstchoice destinations within the hospitality and tourism industries; and • Achieving real outcomes for members through successful negotiation with the State Labor Government. 1. Continuing initiatives to deliver outcomes to members’ advantage (A) Liquor (1) AHA (Vic) has maintained a constructive and on-going dialogue with both the Andrews Labor Government and the Guy Coalition Opposition such that equivalent unnecessary venue-based interventions such as “Lockouts” have been rejected as inappropriate and not required in Victoria’s late night economy; (2) AHA (Vic) provided a detailed submission to the Victorian Government’s review of the Liquor Control Reform Act (LCRA) 1998. Key features of the submission included: • Ensure no amendments to the LCRA seeking to extend the definition of “intoxication” to include substances other than liquor e. g. illicit drugs, pharmaceuticals, synthetic stimulants etc. or to amalgamate the concepts of “intoxication” and “drunkenness” per the LCRA; • Streamline and significantly reduce the administrative burden on licensees in respect of record-keeping liquor-serving staff Responsible Serving of Alcohol training;

• Strengthen the application of the existing Section 58 of the LCRA allowing the VCGLR to seek to amend licence conditions of its own volition, including that such applications may also be directed to a class of licences; • Maintain existing LCRA provisions related to the admission of non-members to Licensed club premises and to consume liquor; • Review the regime of licence types to the extent necessary to remove inconsistencies and uncertainty; • Reduce the over-utilisation of Renewable Limited Licences by providing that the VCGLR must be satisfied that a “substantive” licence type is not more suitable, notwithstanding that the scale and scope of the supply of liquor is limited; • Consideration to be given to enhancing the VCGLR’s legislative ability to conduct an initial assessment of an applicant’s risk status prior to detailing the application requirements; • Affirm that the existing section 3B provides that General Licensees are able to serve liquor into on-street non-licensed areas without the requirement for any additional licensing approval, subject to any local government local laws in respect of consumption in public places; • Provide that any demerit points accrued pursuant to the risk-based licence fee may be waived by the VCGLR in respect of an approved incoming transferee;

• Extend Responsible Serving of Alcohol training to liquor serving staff of Restaurant and Cafe licence types; and • Amend the definition of “amenity” per section 3AA of the LCRA to provide that the evidence of detraction from or detriment to the amenity of the community is required to create a likelihood that the relevant behaviour inside the premises will have a subsequent unacceptable impact outside the premises. (3) A detailed submission was provided to the VCGLR regarding their defence of a matter at the Supreme Court relating to the imposition of a condition on a liquor licence. The matter involved absolute liability being applied by Police rather than statutory defences under the Liquor Control Reform Act. Pleasingly, the Police subsequently decided to withdraw proceedings; (4) Continued assistance to member venues on a case-by-case basis where applications had been made for variation of licence to extend hours of trade in inner-metropolitan Local Government areas affected by the State Government’s decision to extend the post 1am freeze on new and/or varied liquor licences;

whole of population “one-size fits all” late night venue intervention strategies; (7) Continuing to contribute to the State Government’s and the VCGLR red-tape reduction initiative highlighting priority areas in respect of liquor and gaming regulation; (8) Consultation with the Minister for Gaming and Liquor Regulation regarding her program for the restructure of the VCGLR including appointment of the new chair Mr Ross Kennedy; (9) Maintaining effective and productive dialogue with Victoria Police Command and at an operational level in order that matters of concern are identified and addressed in a timely manner, e.g. policing at a precinct and venue level, robberies at gaming venues, etc.; (10) Actively engaging with and participating in licensee forums and related accords across Victoria; (11) Continuing advocacy in conjunction with AHA National and other Branches to the Federal Government directed to: • Maintaining the existing differential excise in respect of draught beer,

(5) Impressing upon the Andrews Government and Guy Opposition the merits of rejecting a container deposit scheme being introduced in Victoria;

• The restoration of reasonable entertainment expenses as a tax deduction and the removal of FBT on staff business meals, and

(6) Through representation on the Ministerial Liquor Control Advisory Council, AHA (Vic) has successfully advocated for the rejection by the State Government of

• Managing continuing and persistent efforts by certain health and welfare agencies to redefine acceptable drinking guidelines.

(B) Gaming and Gambling (1) AHA (Vic) lodged a detailed submission in response to the State Government’s Consultation Paper on the “Review of Gaming Machine Harm Minimisation Measures” in Victoria.

• Venue staff interaction with customers displaying signs of distress from gambling should continue to be dealt with through the Responsible Gambling Code of Conduct;

allows the Government to confidently extend the term of the entitlements in full expectation of the continuing provision of safe and responsible gaming.

• Continue to provide for the current industry-based self-exclusion arrangements delivering two entry points to a common database and single operating system;

The decision is a confirmation of the success of the gaming venue operator model introduced in 2012. This model allows gaming venue operators to effectively respond to the expectations and demands of the local communities.

• The development of a further module of Advanced Responsible Service of Gambling training is premature in that significant reform of existing training was implemented in January 2017; and

Importantly, the announcement removes the uncertainty regarding the post-2022 gaming environment and will facilitate significant investment in gaming pubs across Victoria.

• Continue to provide EFTPOS services to customers at gaming venues at a $200 per transaction limit;

• AHA (Vic) opposes any further extension of regional and municipal caps. Rather in light of significant recent population growth, the basis of current cap calculations should be reviewed.

AHA (Vic) looks forward to working with the Government to finalise details and to give effect to the announcement.

• Amend the Gambling Regulation Act to increase the cheque winning threshold from $1,000 to $5,000 or amend the Act to provide that the threshold be prescribed from time to time by the Responsible Minister;

(2) AHA (Vic) provided input to the Department of Justice Industry Advisory Group on gaming for the development of policy arrangements for the extension of the term of the gaming licence beyond August 2022.

• The exchanging of personal cheques for cash not be permitted;

On the 11 of August this year, the Andrews’ Government announced its intention to extend the term of gaming machine entitlements.

The submission proposes to maintain core existing regulatory arrangements in their current working order such as Selfexclusion programs and codes of conduct. Additionally, the AHA (Vic) submission sought to reduce the burden of “red tape” where appropriate, eg. Increase the threshold for payment of winnings by cheque. Key features of the submission included:

• Ticket-in-ticket-out be implemented without the need for further harm minimisation requirements; • Continue to maintain the existing Responsible Gambling Codes of Conduct with no additional requirements regarding the operation of loyalty schemes;

This decision provides certainty for venue operators and their business operations can now be valued in the context of having gaming operations until at least 2042. Victoria has a world’s best-practice responsible gaming regime in place which

10 | 2017 ANNUAL REPORT AUSTRALIAN HOTELS ASSOCIATION (VICTORIA)

Most of the requirements relating to the number and distribution of gaining machines will not change. These include: • the maximum number of machines (27,372); • the maximum number of machines per venue (105); • the requirement that at least 20 percent of machines are outside of metropolitan Melbourne; • the 35 percent restriction on the ownership of hotel entitlements; • There will be some changes to the club regulatory settings, including: • the maximum number of entitlements held by a club venue operator will increase from 420 to 840 (subject to conditions)

We are advised that the 50:50 rule will be adjusted to facilitate the allocation of unused club entitlements to the hotel sector. The size of the adjustment to be made to the 50:50 rule will be determined by the Government after clubs have been provided with the opportunity to purchase up to 50 percent of all entitlements, two or more clubs will be permitted to enter into a revenue sharing agreement or amalgamation (subject to conditions which are yet to be determined). Some of the government’s decisions are dependent upon the passage of legislation. On behalf of AHA (Vic) members, we will continue our thorough engagement with the Guy/Walsh Coalition Opposition in order to obtain their support for the successful passage of the legislation. AHA (Vic) looks forward to working with the Government to finalise details and to give effect to the announcement. This includes the price of an entitlement to be calculated using a formula based on each venue’s gaming revenue. This means that venues with similar revenue will pay a similar premium. A second premium will be payable for the period 2032 to 2042. The same methodology will be used to determine the amount of the second premium. You will be advised of the amount of the second premium before 2032. The Government has announced that the tax scales will be amended to make the tax structure more progressive. This will be done by inserting a new tax bracket and

adjusting the tax rates for the top three brackets. (3) AHA (Vic) continued to provide input to the Department of Justice and the VCGLR on the implementation and expansion of the “Your Play” voluntary pre-commitment system; (4) AHA (Vic), in conjunction with AHA National and other Branches, successfully advocated to the Federal Government that any proposed increase in GST should be tax neutral in respect of the operation of gaming machines; (5) AHA (Vic) actively engaged with the VCGLR and where appropriate the Department of Justice on key gaming system innovations, including: • Ticket-In-Ticket-Out technology, and • the implementation of loyalty schemes in conjunction with the “Your Play” voluntary pre-commitment system. (6) AHA (Vic) continued to actively advocate to the Department of Justice and the Minister for Gaming and Liquor Regulation for an increase in the current $1,000 threshold for payment by cheque of gaming winnings; (7) AHA (Vic) actively engaged with AUSTRAC in respect of AML / CTF requirements applying to gaming venues; (8) AHA (Vic) in conjunction with AHA National and other Branches continued to lobby the Federal Government on illegal off-shore wagering and successfully advocated for the introduction of a ban on on-line in-play wagering;

(9) Through the AHA (Vic) / Tabcorp PubTAB Development Commitment, significant technological advancements are now being trialled across Victoria directed to effectively integrating the retail and digital wagering services to the benefit of PubTAB operators including the introduction of digital betting commissions being attracted to PubTAB operators; (10) Continuing to facilitate VCGLR requirements for venue operators to lodge annual reviews of self-exclusion and Responsible Gambling Code operational in all gaming venues across Victoria; and (11) Maintaining close and confidential contact with Victoria Police in their continuing efforts to address armed crime events against gaming venues, including the conduct of seminars for gaming members. (C) Workplace Relations 1) Continuing to provide high quality workplace relations support, service and advice to all AHA (Vic) members, including visitation to members for award awareness and other day to day employment related areas of concern; 2) Support to members in the areas of unfair dismissals, adverse action / general protection claims, issue resolution and related issues; 3) Support to members in relation to Fair Work Ombudsman issues including alleged underpayment of entitlements and other investigations; 4) Strategic workplace structure reviews and restructuring support upon the request of a member;

WWW.AHAVIC.COM.AU | 11

5) Continuing to provide member briefings and seminars on current and emerging workplace relations issues; 6) Working with Migration Agent Corporate Partners to provide the growing need for advice in relation to migration visa issues and changes within the visa requirements and obligations; 7) Providing leadership in the AHA National workplace relations agenda; and 8) Working with members to understand their day to day workforce issues and assisting with discussion and possible solution for the longer term benefit of the member business. (D) Political Engagement (1) Following the re-election of the Turnbull Coalition Government in July 2016, AHA (Vic) in conjunction with AHA National and other Branches provided considerable input to relevant Ministers having previously canvassed the AHA Policy Agenda prior to the Federal Election; (2) AHA (Vic) continued to financially support political parties and current and aspiring members of State and Commonwealth Parliaments who demonstrate an empathy for pub interests and a willingness to consult on relevant matters; and All disclosure requirements of the Australia Electoral Commission, the Fair Work Commission and the Industrial Registrar are complied with.

TAA (VIC) REPORT

Performance Review In the 2016/17 year, Tourism Accommodation Australia, Victoria, (TAA (Vic)), worked assiduously to address issues and opportunities of interest to our diverse network of 3, 4 and 5-star hotels, motels and serviced apartments. Activities of note included: • Shaping the agenda on salient industry issues and engaged with members, through regular general managers’ meetings, to provide timely updates on activities undertaken by TAA (Vic) to protect and promote the interests of accommodation hoteliers; • Continued interaction with key industry stakeholders, for example, relevant parliamentarians, Visit Victoria, Tennis Australia, Melbourne Airport, Melbourne City Council, Victoria Racing Club, Marriner Group and Her Majesty’s Theatre, to provide them a platform to engage with accommodation hoteliers and discuss matters of mutual interest; • Leveraged TAA (Vic)’s relationships with, and access to, prominent hotel and tourism industry leaders to conduct regular Boardroom lunch meetings and determine an agreed platform to address relevant challenges and opportunities; • Lobbied all levels of government to achieve outcomes on key issues for accommodation hoteliers, including pending changes to relevant workplace relations legislation; lessening of restrictions relating to hotels advertising room rates via online channels; securing a reduction in the backpacker tax

and increased flexibility in related employment provisions, and exclusions gained on applicable stamp duty and land tax surcharges, for foreign investors purchasing hotels; • Interacted with members across a range of communication channels, including electronic newsletters, industry relevant reports and submissions and the TAA (Vic) website to keep them abreast of evolving industry issues. This included publishing a range of relevant articles in the ‘Hotel Today’ magazine; • Conducted meetings on topical matters, for member benefit, including Human Resources and Financial Controllers meetings; Director of Sales and Marketing meetings; staff and management training to enable them to interact and share relevant ideas and insights; • Developed and delivered specialist workshops and seminars to provide current industry trends and performance on key metrics, for example, the TAA (Vic) hotel market update and economic outlook forum, and • Celebrated the success of hotels and service staff located across Victoria via event planning and execution of the TAA (Vic) State Awards for Excellence, an event that also provided winners a pathway for recognition at a national level. Outcomes achieved During 2016/17, TAA (Vic) worked with TAA and AHA nationally to:

16 | 2017 ANNUAL REPORT AUSTRALIAN HOTELS ASSOCIATION (VICTORIA)

• Achieve a reduction in Sunday and public holiday penalty rates and a pending decision on more flexible part-time provisions in the Hospitality Industry (General) Award 2010; • Highlight the anti-competitive behaviour of Online Travel Agents (OTAs). The outcome of this sustained lobbying saw some lessening of restrictions, in particular the removal of the all of inventory clause, and the ability for hotels to control rates offered via offline channels and to loyalty program members. TAA (Vic) has assisted TAA National in gathering an evidence base to assist the ACCC in putting together a case on the need for full online rate parity. This work is continuing; • TAA National worked with industry to campaign against the backpacker tax, securing a decrease in the applicable tax rate from 32.5 percent to 15 percent as well as increased flexibility in the conditions applying to working holiday maker (WHM) visas. TAA was the primary advocate of the decision to allow a single employer with premises in different regions to employ a WHM for 12 months, with six months in each region; • Representations made to the State Government concerning stamp duty and land tax surcharges. Exclusions afforded to accommodation providers mean a transaction tax surcharge does not apply to foreign investors purchasing hotels, motels and serviced apartment complexes. - Exemptions for land tax surcharges are now also available to commercial operators who make a strong and positive contribution to the Victorian

economy by, for example, engaging local labour and utilising local materials and services; and • Collect benchmark state and national salary data, to track trends for the benefit of our members. This information was anonymously aggregated with data received from states and territories across Australia to compare salaries and benefits paid to management and employees. This information provided a snapshot of movements in salary levels across the industry over the past financial year and will be used as a basis to map salary and benefit trends in future years. Looking forward Approaching the end of the 2016/17 financial year, the TAA (Vic) Board agreed upon four nationally relevant and four state-specific priority issues for attention in 2017/18. Priority issues of national significance include: National Goal One: Unregulated accommodation and the need to work with relevant stakeholders and all levels of government to address the short-stay accommodation issue. National Goal Two: Industrial Relations – The development of an education campaign to help members implement changes to the Hospitality Industry (General) Award 2010 National Goal Three: On Line Travel Agents (OTAs) - Continuing to advocate the right for hotels to publicise their room rates on their own public website, at whatever price they determine, including lower than rates offered by OTAs.

National Goal Four: Labour Force Planning - Address labour force planning issues to position the hospitality industry as an employer of choice, able to attract and retain a high calibre of staff at multiple entry points to the industry. Priority goals of state significance in 2017/18 will include: State Goal One: Visit Victoria - Understand the role, performance and structure of Visit Victoria and the fundamental function the organisation plays in attracting meetings, events and visitors to Victoria. State Goal Two: Industry Infrastructure Actively participate in discussions regarding the future development of industry infrastructure, including the Queen Victoria Market, the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre, new rail loop, airport access, load and carriers.

State Goal Three: Lead the hotel industry’s support for the continued development of arts and theatre precincts, as an integral component of the Victorian tourism experience. State Goal Four: Assist members to address rising utility costs, presenting energy and cost saving initiatives that offer alternatives to hoteliers to mitigate market price volatility. These priority issues will dictate how TAA (Vic) directs its resources and attention in 2017/18 to address issues and opportunities of relevance to members. Cheers,

Dougal Hollis General Manager Tourism Accommodation Australia (Victoria)

2017 H otel C are REPORT

HotelCare was established in 1999 as an on-going initiative of AHA (Vic) to raise and distribute funds to worthy charities and organisations and to advance the overall interests of the pub and hotel sector in Victoria. HotelCare is funded on behalf of all AHA (Vic) members through contributions by members with gaming machines. Since its foundation, HotelCare has directly distributed nearly $4.4 million to charitable organisations. One of the biggest fundraising events is the HotelCare Golf Day held each December with the kind assistance and support from the Victorian Liquor Industry Golf Club, Victoria Golf Club and our corporate partners. This day provides funds to HotelCare beyond the contributions of gaming pubs, with 100% of monies raised directed to charities and worthy causes.

The Ovarian Cancer Foundation also received a donation of $25,000 which was made at the May Ladies Lunch at the Woolshed Hotel. Ovarian cancer is the deadliest of all women’s cancers. Each year in Australia approximately 1,580 women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer and more than 1,047 women die from the disease. This donation will help the foundation to provide support services, raise awareness of the signs and symptoms, and help fund research into treatment. Another substantial donation this year was made to Whitelion Inc. Our $10,000 donation will go towards supporting youth at risk through employment programs, mentoring and a range of other outreach programs aimed to engage disadvantaged youth. The tragedy that occurred in the Bourke Street Mall earlier in the year captured our hearts and we are proud to have donated $20,000 to the fund to provide financial support to assist the families most affected by the Bourke

Street tragedy. This money will be used for psychological support, funeral costs and other ongoing care needs depending on the family. Funds within HotelCare are also utilised to support political parties and current or aspiring members of Parliament who demonstrate a willingness to genuinely consult on relevant policy development and implementation, as well as to fund targeted initiatives in members’ interests.

2016 AUSTRALIAN HOTELS ASSOCIATION (VIC) STATE AWARDS FOR EXCELLENCE

The winners of the 2016 Australian Hotels Association (Vic) State Awards for Excellence were announced at a gala dinner held on Monday 14th November at The Palladium at Crown. The finalists and winners were honoured at the ceremony in front of 1200 guests and professionals of the hotel industry. The Masters of Ceremonies, Dave Thornton, and Ian Cover hosted the industry night of nights with a great comedic flair that set the tone for a fun-filled ceremony. There was no shortage of musical talents, with the night being kicked off by “The Voices Of”; the new calibration of Jason Singh from Taxiride and Dale Ryder from Boom Crash Opera and later by emerging Australian artists Miss Abbey Stone and Benny Walker, there was definitely no shortage of entertainment. The AHA (Vic) State Awards for Excellence program was established in the late 1980s to recognise hotels and pubs in Victoria that demonstrate excellence across a range of categories. This year the judges noted an emphasis on investment in staff training and

infrastructure which resulted in a significant number of overall finalists in many of the 39 categories. A new award category was introduced to this year’s program, the People’s Choice Award. All 134 nominees from this year’s awards were eligible to participate in People’s Choice Award and from the number of votes lodged it was incredibly well embraced by hotels and their local communities. Over 3000 votes were received which resulted in a highly competitive contest, with only 37 votes determining first from fifth place. Congratulations to Criterion Hotel in Sale on being the inaugural winner of AHA (Vic) People’s Choice Award! Another coveted award is the Nikakis Award which was established in 1997 in memory of Nick Nikakis, “recognising an individual or organisation who by their sustained performance and commitment serve as an inspiration to all in the industry”. The 2016 Nikakis Award was awarded to Mark Robertson OAM. Mark initially joined Victoria’s pub industry in the early 1990s

20 | 2017 ANNUAL REPORT AUSTRALIAN HOTELS ASSOCIATION (VICTORIA)

and quickly established a reputation as a no holds barred businessman and publican. His interests include the Lower Plenty Hotel, Epping Plaza Hotel, Mail Exchange Hotel, Welcome Stanger Hotel and Watergardens Hotel. Included in his AHA activities, Mark helped establish “HotelCare” to advance AHA’s charitable activities and through his leadership of the HotelCare Golf Day it has raised over $2 million for Victoria’s most needy charities and causes. He has been an AHA-nominated Board member of HOSTPLUS Superannuation for almost 13 years – a time when the fund has distinguished itself through its excellent management, financial performance and return to members. Mark is truly worthy of this award in recognition of his contribution to the industry and the broader community. Congratulations to the 2016 Nikakis Award Mark Robertson OAM. AHA (Vic) congratulates all finalists and winners of the 2016 AHA (Vic) State Awards for Excellence and encourage all members to be involved in next year’s awards.

2017 TAA (VIC) ACCOMMODATION AWARDS FOR EXCELLENCE

Victoria’s finest accommodation hotels and venue staff were recognised at the 2017 Tourism Accommodation Australia (Victoria) Accommodation Awards for Excellence event. Winners were announced at a gala dinner held at the Grand Hyatt Melbourne on Thursday 22nd June 2017. The dinner was attended by in excess of 500 accommodation hoteliers and hospitality industry leaders, including representatives of the Victorian Government, Arts Centre Melbourne, Melbourne City Council, Destination Melbourne, Australian Grand Prix Corporation, Melbourne Food and Wine Festival, Melbourne Convention Bureau and Queen Victoria Market. The “Outstanding Contribution to the Industry” award recognises the sustained impact of a hotelier or industry leader, who has made a significant contribution to the Victoria’s tourism and accommodation sectors. This year the recipient of this prestigious award was hotel industry doyen, Darryl Washington. In his forty six years of service to the hospitality industry Darryl has owned and operated hotels, held a number of Board positions with the Australian Hotels Association, including

2017 AHA NATIONAL AWARDS FOR EXCELLENCE The stars of Australia’s booming hospitality and accommodation industry were honoured in a glittering national function on the Gold Coast on Monday 18th September. Nearly 500 VIPs and industry guests gathered for the Australian Hotels Association National Awards for Excellence dinner, held at the RACV Royal Pines Resort. AHA National President Scott Leach said the winners, chosen from more than 5,000 members nationwide, were the reason Australian hotels continue to lead the world. He said the night was about rewarding new ideas, excellence and old-fashioned hard work in venues ranging from mum and dad run country pubs to huge, five star accommodation hotels. Among the highlights was the induction of AHA (Vic) Vice President (Metroloplitan), Mark Robertson OAM, into the AHA National Hall of Fame. Mr Robertson joined Victoria’s pub industry in the tough times of the 1990’s recession, and quickly made his mark in a range of roles. He has been a key player in major decisions made by the Victorian AHA, particularly in regard to property acquisition and in the establishment of AHA charitable activities, including the HotelCare Golf Day, which has now raised over $2m for needy causes. Mr Robertson has also served as the AHA metropolitan vice president since 2008.
