When replacing things back onto the shelf, be ruthless. Ask yourself if you really want it there and if you’ll ever look at it again. If not, turf it! You don’t have to reserve the shelves of your bookcase for books only. Mix up the items on the shelf to keep it interesting and tell a story about your family and your style. I like to use vases, trinkets, boxes and trays on bookshelves when styling for clients. Mixing the horizontal and vertical pieces make the shelf more interesting to look at and discover things. You can also lean some small framed prints or photographs on the shelves too to really personalise the space. 21 MAGAZINE

INTERIORS Another area to review in autumn is your sofa. Does it need a steam clean to refresh it after the hammering it got over the sweaty summer days and nights or wet bathers on the fabric? You can hire a steam cleaner yourself or outsource it to the professionals. Much cheaper than replacing the entire sofa! If you have slip covers, even better. Throw them in the wash and voila, a brand new sofa (sort of..)! I also like to wash my scatter cushion covers every three months or so (if not sooner). Take this opportunity to either throw them out and purchase a new set or soak the existing ones so they’re nice and fresh. I usually have a lighter summer throw rug on the sofa in the warmer months as sometimes it can be chilly at night but once autumn hits I find a need a thicker weight throw rug to handle the change in temperature. Keeping the material natural makes all the difference when snuggling on the sofa with loved ones, so opt for a heavier weight cotton throw rug or a woollen knit for extra cosiness.

Lastly, create some attractive new vignettes around the home. I love styling little corners of the house with a mix of new bits and pieces and some old treasures. I use trays to collate all the pieces together to tell a story. Vignettes look great on hallway tables, buffets in dining rooms and bedside tables. The key is to keep the collection of objects to an odd number, groupings of 3’s and 5’s is more pleasing to the eye than even groupings.

Case Study This is a renovation I did a couple of years back in Sydney’s outer western suburbs for my renovation segment on TEN’s The Living Room. The original house was located on a 670 square metre, wide and level block, so the block was big enough to divide in two and put a twobedroom granny flat out the back. With no formal sub-division required (just complying development for the granny flat), a new paling fence was erected to split the house at the front from the new rear dwelling, providing separate access from the rear lane, making it completely self-contained. For around $50,000, I purchased a two-bedroom granny flat shell with awning from a local supplier, which I had my own tradies fit out. By ordering a bare shell with only the base structure and walls, I was able to achieve a more premium, quality fit-out at a similar cost to a standard, fully finished granny flat. As my tradies were already in full swing renovating the main property, and therefore on site, labour costs were kept to a minimum. Some minor work was necessary to connect water and electricity. Fully completed and ready to rent, the two-bedroom granny flat cost approximately $75,000 and was ready to rent at a tidy $330 per week. In today’s Sydney market, I estimate it would rent for closer to $400.

2.PLANT SPRING FLOWERING BULBS Start planning for a stunning display of bulbs in spring with mass plantings of daffodils, dutch iris, hyacinth, lachenalia, ixia, muscari, ranunculi, Freesia, crocus, anemone, Babiana and tulips. Choose a spot with light, welldrained soil or plant in pots that can be moved out of sight after flowering. In warm areas, chill hyacinth and tulip bulbs in the fridge (about 8 weeks) before planting.
3.TRIM AND PRUNE HEDGES AND PLANTS Trim hedges before the onset of winter to keep them compact and bushy from ground level. The thing about pruning is that it actually stimulates new growth. The reason it does is because a chemical is contained in each terminal bud, or leader, and once you’ve removed that it allows the buds below to break. This means a much bushier plant. Don’t make the mistake of pruning back everything in the garden, because if you do you might miss spring blossoms. A Wisteria, for example, has already set its spring buds – look for the flowering spur and leave it because pruning that means missing its spring flush.
