MELBOURNE’S NORTH EAST
With sprawling parklands, bushland, open spaces and large family houses within easy commuting distance of the city, Melbourne’s north east is known for its architectural gems, culture and nature. The area has been popular with families and those seeking a relaxed lifestyle amongst the trees for many years and more recently with those looking to expand their property search from Melbourne’s inner eastern and northern suburbs. From Ivanhoe to Rosanna, Greensborough and Eltham, Melbourne’s north-eastern suburbs have a lot to offer those looking to enjoy a laidback lifestyle, just a short distance from Melbourne’s CBD. Ivanhoe is known for its large family homes situated on The Boulevard and the Yarra River. This stretch draws in thousands of people each year at Christmas time with an impressive display of lights put on by the home owners that live along the picturesque Boulevard. Since the 1950s, residents have decorated their houses, gardens and windows with illuminating displays of lights, nativity scenes and everything Christmas. Rosanna is known for its beautiful parklands, comprising a mix of open space, passive recreation and bushland areas. The parklands are used
for many different purposes such as walking, jogging, cycling, and picnicking. They also boast an impressive array of native flora and fauna from a diverse mix of indigenous species including the rare Pepper-top Sun Orchid, four different frog species and native birdlife including the Yellowtailed Black Cockatoo, pictured on the cover. If you want city convenience but bushland serenity, Greensborough can meet you halfway. From the surrounding bushland to the shopping and café lifestyle, Greensborough offers the perfect mix for those who want to be close to nature but still have access to many community amenities. Eltham is a goldmine for mid-century, mud-brick architecture. With a distinctive use of natural materials, architects like Alistair Knox pioneered the movement in the area. The suburb is also home to artist colony, Montsalvat, established by Justus Jorgensen in 1934. Today, visitors can pay a small fee to walk through the dozens of buildings, houses and halls set amongst richly established gardens on 48,562 square metres.
