AN ENLIGHTENING APPROACH TO CLEARING THE CLUTTER
Spring is a busy time of year; people are selling, renovating, renting and cleaning their homes from top to bottom. Although come winter, our homes have returned right back to their original state of clutter. This spring will be different, right? It’s time to take some pointers from the best-selling author and minimalist lifestyle master, Marie Kondo to help us cleanse both our homes and our mindsets through tidying up. At the core of Kondo’s philosophy is a simple question; does it spark joy? Our understanding of joy can help us to identify the objects and possessions that bring a sense of delight to our lives. When you are forced to study each feature in your home by this approach, you’ll find refining your collection and the way you store what remains comes with a new sense of perspective. It’s not just about stuff, it’s about how that stuff makes us feel - and where we can claim back some space.
1. There is a method to decluttering. Sort by category, not by location. Start with clothing, books and papers then move onto miscellaneous items and finally the sentimental things. 2. Put every item of clothing you own on the floor – this is the only way to get an overview of just how much you have (and let’s be honest, we often have too much). 3. Discard first and store later. You can’t organise things properly until you have done a brutal elimination. 4. Be ruthless. 5. Learn to fold your clothes. A better technique improves storage and will give you a more streamlined appearance. Rolling and stacking is key. Despite our hectic lifestyles, a change in season gives us the perfect opportunity to step back and check in with ourselves. Reorganising and simplifying the spaces we live in can do wonders for our mindset. Ultimately, tidiness turns out to be less of a virtue, more a philosophy of living.
