We spoke to Beth Richards, Founder and Creative Director of Kinnon, about the brand’s journey, her proudest moment, and what’s next for this sustainable Australian label.

What inspired you to launch Kinnon, and how did the journey begin?

I didn’t start my career expecting to be where I am today. A small idea stuck with me and threw me off course… in a good way. I have a background in brand strategy and PR and ran my own communications agency for many years. Fashion and design have always been close to my heart, and after travelling extensively throughout my career, I began working on designs for work and travel bags and accessories that I couldn’t find — pieces that offered both functionality and personal style. I started researching suppliers and materials, developed a brand and launch strategy, and Kinnon was born.

What has been your proudest moment since founding Kinnon?

Aside from our continued focus on sustainability and longevity, one of my proudest moments was the December launch of our first product collaboration, Kinnon by Romy, with the incredibly talented stylist and creative director Romy Frydman of Style Me Romy. Reflecting the spirit of endless summers and global wanderlust, the resort-inspired collection of six pieces is lovingly handcrafted in our Cambodian factory from sustainably, ethically sourced, and certified materials. The KR collection features a bespoke hand-woven leather rattan weave exclusive to Kinnon. It took about a year from initial concepts to launch due to the intricacy of the design and the care we took to perfect every detail — but it was worth the wait.

Which Kinnon piece best represents the brand’s philosophy, and why?

I love that we develop collections for both men and women, with crossover across many styles.. If I had to choose one piece that best represents Kinnon, it would be our Ada business

bag from the Paloma collection. It is fearless, sleek, unpretentious, and minimalistic in design — but with a clear purpose. It’s a beautifully crafted business and laptop bag with space for workday essentials. It features the collection’s signature gold bar detailing and is made from soft Italian nappa leather.

What do you hope people feel when they own and use a Kinnon piece?

I hope they feel confident and proud to wear a sustainable Australian label — one that helps them move effortlessly through their day and travel while elevating their personal style.

How do you stay inspired and keep your designs fresh in a competitive market?

It’s a constant process that never slows down. I draw inspiration from many places and always try to stay ahead of global trends. We also speak with our customers to learn what they love and what they’d like to see more of. Different markets lean towards different styles and colour palettes, which we take into consideration, but our main focus is always on designing products we love and are proud of — and that we believe our customers will love too.

I’m passionate about design across all areas, not just fashion. My team and I bring this into every meeting and project. We love travel, new technologies, and sustainable materials that reduce waste and make a positive impact on the planet. We’re always exploring how these elements can be integrated into our products. As cliché as it sounds, inspiration really is everywhere.

What’s next for Kinnon? Do you have any exciting plans or new collections on the horizon?

Absolutely! We’ll be releasing new drops to our existing collections, including Kinnon by Romy, in the coming months. We’re also launching a beautiful collection of travel bags made from organic cotton with leather contrast details mid-year — we can’t wait to share it. ■

Emerging Voices In Victorian Art

Victoria’s next generation of artistic talent is being celebrated as Top Arts 2025 takes centre stage at The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia. Now in its 31st year, this much-loved annual exhibition spotlights 40 outstanding students who have excelled in the VCE subjects of Art Making and Exhibiting and Art Creative Practice.

Top Arts presents a dynamic and thought-provoking collection of works in various mediums, including painting, photography, moving images, textiles, sculpture, and digital media. The exhibition captures a spectrum of personal and cultural narratives and reflections on contemporary life, nature, and the complexities of knowledge.

Among this year’s highlights is Eden Thomas’s Copper Lining (Please Don't Touch the Artwork), a striking installation featuring a large-scale copper panel embossed with Braille text. The work plays with the irony of inviting and restricting interaction simultaneously, encouraging viewers to reflect on the accessibility of information in the digital age. Created in consultation with Vision Australia, Thomas’s piece challenges audiences to consider who has access to knowledge and who is left out.

Also featured is Ethan Mangopoulos’s vivid photo series My Life, which charts his personal journey into adulthood. Through layers of colour and x-ray-like textures, Mangopoulos captures moments of self-discovery, navigating shifting relationships and the emotional landscape of growing up.

In Our Rooms, Meg Kane documents the intimate spaces of friends, pairing striking photographic portraits with curated collections of personal objects. The project delves into the influence of personal spaces on identity and celebrates the shared human experience of expressing individuality through the things we choose to display.

First Nations artist Eva Philippiadis contributes Hold Me Gently, a delicate woven basket adorned with oyster shells and inscribed boab nuts. The work is a meditation on family, culture, and the gentle ties that shape one’s sense of self.

Top Arts 2025 offers visitors a powerful and inspiring window into the creative minds of Victoria’s emerging artists, each with a unique story to tell. ■

MARCH MARKET HOLDS STEADY

We are pleased to report steady and consistent performance across the prestige Melbourne property market as we progressed through March. Our teams continue to deliver strong outcomes for our clients, with healthy transaction volumes recorded over recent months. This consistency speaks to the trust our clients place in us and our commitment to every campaign.

Broader market challenges persist, with factors such as increased property taxes and a growing supply impacting investor sentiment in some areas. However, the Melbourne market continues to show resilience. We are encouraged by the steady buyer demand, particularly across the city’s inner suburbs, which confirms the ongoing appeal of quality property in key locations.

Melbourne’s auction clearance rate remains solid, tracking above 70%, which reinforces the level of competition we’re witnessing week-on-week. We are also seeing a notable number of underbidders eager to secure their next opportunity, which bodes well for the months ahead as we move further into the busy autumn selling season.

At Marshall White, we remain focused on helping our clients navigate these evolving market conditions while delivering standout results. Our success is a testament to the hard work, expertise, and professionalism of our entire team. I am proud of the collaborative energy we bring to serve our clients and look forward to building on this momentum in the months ahead. ■
