TROOP 400

SUMMER 2024 NEWSLETTER

St. James’s Episcopal Church 1205 West Franklin Street, Richmond, VA 23220 Meetings are held in the basement of Michaux House

A YOUTH MINISTRY PROGRAM OF ST. JAMES’S EPISCOPAL CHURCH

This is a quick overview of the Troop 400 program and is a compilation of our 2023-2024 monthly newsletters. The first Scout Meeting of the 2024-2025 Scout Year is on Wednesday, September 4th, 2024 and the first Hike is Friday the 20th through Sunday the 22nd. Included is the 2024-2025 Proposed Calendar.

Our Philosophy

Every Scout Troop operates independently within the guidelines and procedures of Scouting America, yet every Troop is different. At Troop 400, we focus on what is most important in a concentrated amount of time to empower Scouts in acquiring and practicing critical life skills in safe and challenging environments. Our goal is to help every Scout that wants to be an Eagle Scout become an Eagle Scout.

Troop 400 is for your family if you value building life skills, rising to new opportunities and are willing to put in several weekends of commitment.

Some Highlights Of Our Program

 Family Kick-Off Pool Party on September 15th. Meet other Scout Families.

 Six 2-Night Hikes: We have one two (2) night Hike most months, exceptions are in January and April when there will be a different program.

 One 2-Night Father & Son Hike in May. Includes our “Future Scout” program.

 Special programs of interest to Scouts, Tree Time Adventures, Triangle Rock Climbing, Marine Museum.

 Ten Scout Meetings: We have limited Scout Meetings during the week because of school conflicts. Meetings are held on a Wednesday starting at 7:00pm and ending around 8:30pm.

 Troop wide Family Banquet in April for Advancement Recognition from Tenderfoot to Eagle.

 One

 Five day Hampden Sydney College Merit Badge Day.

Day Scout Camp, T. Brady Saunders in Goochland, Summer Camp fees are approximately $450.00.

 Troop 400 T-shirt, neckerchief, all the patches you can earn.

Attendance is generally required and recorded because without an acceptable attendance record, Scouts will not be able to advance. Excused absences are to be arranged in advance with Scoutmaster Billy Parrish.

Some Important Details

Procure, maintain, and wear formal Scout uniform for all events. Uniforms are NOT required on Hikes. With the weather we have on Hikes and the difficulty in changing into a uniform for a brief time period, we issue Troop T-Shirts and encourage Scouts to use them on Hikes. Full uniforms will be required for all other Troop functions unless Scouts are specifically notified in advance.

THE DUES ARE $275.00 PER SCOUT PER YEAR. Payment is due by October 31st, 2024.

Fees associated with The Heart of Virginia Council and Scouting America account for $115 of the dues. Our programs are partially covered by funds raised from the sale of HUBS peanuts and some generous benefactors. With the costs of Troop T-Shirts, neckerchiefs, patches, and several fee related programs, the dues also help cover these expenses. There may be additional programs and a separate fee may also be required, you will receive notice of those well in advance. We expect that all Scouts will sell HUBS peanuts and those funds go into equipment and programs.

There is a more complete description of our program in the 2024-2025 Handbook.

...Important Details Continued

In rotation, a Scout will be responsible for the food for an assigned weekend Hike for his Patrol instead of the assigning specific items to several Scouts. The menus will be assigned from the Patrol Cookbook provided to Patrol leaders and the Patrol leader will confirm in advance the items and amounts. The plan is standardized menus and to spread the burden evenly. Cooking and meal preparation is a major component in advancement. In the event your Scout is assigned the food and will not attend, you need to advise Scoutmaster Billy Parrish ASAP.

General Expectations

We have expectations of our Scouts and it involves a commitment from the Family:

 Attend a minimum of 75% of the Scout Hikes and Meetings.

 RSVP to all events to set Troop up for success.

 Ensure Scout meets food obligation even if not able to attend Hike.

 Don’t stand up your children or our Staff by arriving late or not showing up for pick-up.

 Inform Scoutmaster of outlier behavior immediately. Working through an adversity is part of growing; fear for personal safety is not.

 Father, Uncle, Grandfather, older Brother, or Friend registers for and helps with at least One Overnight Hike per year.

 Participate in Trailer Day and help clean and organize Troop equipment.

 Arrive on time, Don’t leave early. Everyone needs to help.

 Leave all electronics at home. No cell phones!

 Help advancement for younger Scouts on Hikes.

What your Scout gets back for his investment of time:

 Critical life skills that help him address ambiguous and uncertain situations with confidence and agility.

 Ability to navigate and succeed at new and different scenarios.

 Positive memories that will last a lifetime and shape a positive attitude for adulthood.

 Meaningful friendships that span ages, interest and social groups.

If your Scout embraces the Scout program and achieves Eagle Scout, he will become a Member of an elite group of upstanding young men. By doing so, he will create a competitive advantage for his future life ambitions.

We look forward to greeting our returning Scouts and to new ones joining the Troop. If you know of anyone that would be interested in joining the Troop, please let us know and feel free to share this information.

Parents are always welcome to attend Scout Meetings or functions.

Thank you in advance for your interest, support and possible participation. At Troop 400, it will be an honor to help your son through Scouting.

Please contact us with any questions, suggestions or concerns.

Troop 400 December 2023 Newsletter

With three recent deaths, the Troop has lost over 100 years of volunteer leadership, commitment and experience. Cliff Fleet, our Honorary Troop physician, passed away September 16th, but not before the Troop was able to present him with a Resolution. Among other things, the Resolution mentioned his wide range of Scouting involvement, his generosity to Boy Scouts, his uncanny memory and sense of humor and specifically his being a role model for dealing with adversity for both Scouts and Leaders.

On December 3rd, Tony Smith passed away. Tony served as Scoutmaster of Troop 400 for literally two generations of Scouts and was a dedicated Troop leader, a leader in the greater Scouting Community and a role model for both Scouts and Leaders. His sense of humor, willingness to help and his desire for Scouts to do their best are legendary. His services are scheduled for January 5th and 6th of 2024.

On December 9th, Walter Scott passed away. In addition to serving in almost all roles, from Cook to Peanut Salesman, Walter served as the Troop Treasurer for many years. Walter's reputation for value and frugality became Troop legend, a role he enjoyed and perfected. Walter was also a role model for Scouts and Leaders alike, always happy to see you and to greet you with a smile. At this writing, Walter's services have not been announced.

Because of these three men and other leaders they symbolize, hundreds of young boys have matured into fine young men. Their dedication to the ideals of Scouting has changed a number of lives and the Troop is grateful for their service. They will be missed.

The Troop 400 family lost a special member when former Assistant Scoutmaster Dan Moseley passed away on March 1st, 2023. Dan was a man of few words, but they were always worth hearing and most of them were accompanied by a dry sense of humor. His quiet demeanor and patient leadership style endeared him to all the Scouts. In fact, Scouts only knew what rank they really earned when Dan read their names at the Recognition Banquet. For Staff Members, Committee Members and Guests over some 35 years, Dan was a legendarychef“EggswithAshes” and “StaffBurgersWithBuns” werehisspecialties.
