• The “Flash Gordon” comic strip begins publishing in the United States on Jan. 7. • Frank Capra’s “It Happened One Night,” starring Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert, is released Feb. 22. It becomes a smash hit and the first of Capra’s great screen classics. It becomes the first film to win all 5 of the major Academy Awards – Best Actor, Best Actress,
Best Screenplay, Best Director, and Best Picture. Gable and Colbert receive their only Oscars for this film. • The newly refurbished Fenway Park opens April 17 in Boston. Seating capacity was increased and the mound known as Duffy’s Cliff along the left-field wall had been leveled, a scoreboard installed at the base of the wall in its place. The entire park gained its distinctive shade of green at this time, although the left-field wall later to be famously nicknamed the Green Monster would remain covered in advertisements until 1947. • The United States Department of Justice offers a $25,000 reward for John Dillinger on May 15. • A team of police officers, led by Texas Ranger Frank Hamer, ambush bank robbers Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow near their hide-out in Black Lake, Louisiana, on May 23 killing them both. • President Roosevelt signs the Securities Exchange Act into law June 6, establishing the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. • The Disney animated short “The Wise Little Hen” featuring the debut of Donald Duck is released June 9. • The world famous Brookfield Zoo opens July 1 in Brookfield, Illinois. • “Pretty Boy” Floyd is shot and killed by FBI agents Oct. 22 near East Liverpool, Ohio.
