• Cuban Missile Crisis. The world was the closest its ever been to nuclear war when Russia is discovered building missile silos on and sends large numbers of bombers and MiGs to Cuba. President Kennedy proposes to remove missiles from Turkey if USSR removes them from Cuba, with the promise the the U.S. would not invade Cuba. Although no formal announcement was ever made, this incident led to a direct communications hotline being established between Moscow and Washington, D.C. • The United Nations General Assembly passes a resolution condemning South Africa’s racist apartheid policies and calls for its member states to cease military and economic relations with the nation.
