Robert, you’ve been such a constant in my life for over 27 years... Since that first time we met on Bridlington promenade and you stood up on that JCB with my outline showing it to everyone. We’ve travelled the UK and Europe together, painted god only knows how many walls together. In fact we pretty much spent most of our twenties at each others homes and in more recent times we’ve done some truly amazing projects together as part of AOC. I am a hugely better human being for having you in my life and I am the artist I am today largely because of you. Long may our friendship continue... Rem x

Cheers for memories of you smoking 3-skin rollies that looked like spliffs, drawing endless double-takes from passers by. Cheers for nights spent at your place amongst piles of old newspapers drinking Wray & Nephews. Cheers for always being a renegade and an inspiration. Cheers for being a black man in a kilt... Respect! ‘One Love’. Happy 50th mate, you’ve earned it. Slàinte! Steve More

As the toys slipped in and out of consciousness, dreaming of ways to replicate their belt buckles onto every available space on Earth, you made paint dance across the surface of Mars. With one giant landslide of holts automotive, the mountains shifted and oceans parted, leaving nothing but a trace ephemeral. You allowed us to break the seals of your metal books, still moist with the flower pressings of other worldly varieties. You gifted us with the rites of passage, to perform alchemy with electric blues and reddish violets, held firmly between the feminine valves of our jedi weapons. We came to the hive for salvation, and be forgiven for our sins. To discover the compass and sleep with the giants. Between man and the sea, we took a leap of faith! Together relentlessly, we harnessed your spirit to transform the concrete spheres with a colourful music. Although we battled hard, still high on the emissions, the scores continue to resonate today in a universe without end or meaning. Many nights, we emptied the residual elements of the Isle of Skye, containing 45.8 per cent soul power, while consuming entire volumes of Baudelaire. The original ghetto dandys ‘burning fire pon Harborne!’ On streets without pavements, we always found our way, with nothing but 50 grams of Golden Virginia and cardboard tubes of aluminium tin foil to mask our faces. Even amidst the echoes of Sleng Teng, we summoned the great Don King to levitate! How he sailed the sky and trespassed on the balconies terrorising the neighbours! Feeling nervous as hell, we rescued him just in time for omelettes and fresh English tea. Brother in arms… How rich are the flavours of Birmingham’s beloved Balti House. As you reach this half century milestone, I give to you these verses…. Keith K. Hopewell

Rob, Its always a pleasure. The first time I saw you was on my brothers home video of Bridlington, You made an immediate impression, “Wow, this guy is passionate about art. I think that every person that met you for the first time ran home and covered everything in paint. The drip paint technique was so unique, it had to be tried but no one has ever mastered it the way you have. Although I may not understand your fascination for a good romance novel, I finally appreciate the benefits of two layers of trousers. You are always an inspiration, from our early meetings after Bridlington talking about changing how we approach graffiti to setting up plans for Ikonoklast. The Ikonoklast years will always be my favorite time in my life. The many hours spent sifting through art books talking about Giger, Bellmer, Egon Schiele and Klimt. Too long pouring through countless typography manuals. I hope there will be many more hours to come. Jason

Dear Robert, well let me start this by saying Happy Birthday, 50, it won’t be long & i’ll be there myself! Which gives me time to reflect on all the years I’ve known you, they are considerable now, Jason, brought me to Birmingham, to Selly Oak for the first official Ikonoklast meeting in 1990, from the beginning it was to be a roller coaster of a ride/movement, it was only two years later you pronounced it dead! but if the idea of Ikonoklast wasn’t to last the friendship has. Thank you my friend for teaching me so much, from the technical of mixing nozzles to the much border of why using a medium isn’t as important as how the medium is used. The early days of rolling up to somewhere to paint like Carlisle, to having everyone to stay at my flat in North Wales to paint “Ghosties” or years later to Melissa’s & my place in Perth have left me with a lot of good memories, stories & insights. Not to mention the funniest library of quotes like “I don’t draw” but fondest of all is the memory of every time I’ve seen you, no matter how long it may have been, is your warmest of smiles. One Love brother & happy 50th. Stormie

Reptiles

For over a decade reptiles was a huge part of my life and of course you were a huge part of reptiles. Success can be debated one way or another but one thing is certain and that is that I am very proud of what we achieved and specifically what you contributed and if I have never said it before, thank you for that. Being unfairly outnumbered it was always down to you to travel to London, which you did without complaint (probably). The last to fall and the first to rise. Always calm and yet enthusiastic, gently (and not so gently) pushing things forward.. (“Bag o’shite!”) Opinions were voiced once or twice, but more often than not five or six times, with increasing ferocity and amplitude, the climax of which would invariably lead to tales of a “shoeing” or two. The shoes of course provided by Clarks. Trousers that could accommodate entire off licences at a time, and more often than not, did, particularly when leaving someone else’s dressing room! topped off with the omnipresent rollie, presumably made by Willy Wonka by virtue that each one seemed to last weeks at a time! The laughs and good times though were all your own making. For those I will always be grateful. Happy birthday Rob! Joe

I remember being fresh outta music school and joining Reptiles, in school we always worked with sheet music, so imagine Rob’s face when I asked can I see lyrics sheets :) !!! ‘Let me take you in my mind a little deeper, let you shake make you shiver’ my favourite as is his delivery of the line ‘I wrote the electric love song for you !! Man, first time I met Rob I was a very drunk american in Aberdeen - was sobered up by his devastating infectious type skills just enough to get inspired and do our set before I got drunk again - got to admit was very glad to run into such a solid brother so far north - even if we were both a long way from home. Your knowledge and influence goes deeper than you could ever imagine. Creative. Kind. Trusting. Passionate. Original and True. It’s a pleasure, and honour to count you as one of my true fiends. Pete Sola

Robert Elliot, you have touched our hearts and expanded our minds in so many ways throughout the years. Whether it be through your art, your music or your views on life, the environment or knowledge of history; you never fail to engage and interest us. We feel honoured to have you as our friend and Herbs & Mags adore their Uncle Robert. They are lucky to have you in their lives to help us, nurture and guide them into adulthood. Even though you are now, officially, an old bastard, we look forward to many more days and nights of laughter, drinking, great conversation and messy moments! Happy 50th, Robert! One love, Laura and Jim xx
