LETTER FROM THE BOARD CHAIRWOMAN Dear Chamber Members, Supporters and Stakeholders, It is an honor to serve as Chair of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Louisiana (HCCL). It gives me a great pleasure to work with such a dedicated board of directors and staff as we assist all our members, sponsors and stakeholders across the state of Louisiana. The year 2020 has been an unprecedented year, and the current COVID-19 pandemic variants have been difficult for everyone. In response to the crisis, the HCCL in partnership with the Hispanic Young Professionals Committee (HYPLA) and the HCCL Foundation has served a vital role in our community in helping spread awareness of important economic resources and public health guidelines through our COVID-19 Resources page at www.HCCL.biz and social media. The Chamber has shifted its live events to hybrid events bringing virtual and in-person participation, allowing our members, sponsors and friends to connect and engage, regardless of location. The Chamber is still connecting the community and business in very different ways, such as webinars, conferences calls and radio shows, you name it; the Chamber is doing it, bringing us all together. As we continue to recover from the pandemic, the HCCL is working together with corporations, businesses, non-profit organization, community leaders and governmental bodies in providing innovative and progressive solutions to move us into the future. HISPANIC CHAMBER OF COMMERCE OF LOUISIANA

THE CHAMBER’S GUIDING LIGHT The Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Louisiana rises to the challenge of uplifting and supporting marginalized business owners. By Misty Milioto

W

hen Mayra Pineda took on the role of President and CEO of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Louisiana (HCCL) in 2014, she did so with the mission of paving pathways to success for underserved communities. “It is important to me to serve as the president of HCCL because the Hispanic community does not have the same ability to access resources and create generational wealth that other communities do,” she says. “We are a disproportionately impacted community, something that has only been further exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic.” In fact, several studies from 2020 indicate that Hispanic/Latino individuals were unemployed at a higher rate during the pandemic in comparison to their white counterparts. “The Economic Policy Institute details this further in a 2020 3rd and 4th Quarter study, noting the overall unemployment rate for Hispanic Workers was high compared with white workers,” Pineda says. “Furthermore, Hispanic workers faced unemployment greater than 10 percent in eight out of the 18 states with available data. This study is a clear representation of the disproportionate impact felt by the Hispanic community, particularly with unemployment.” Ramiro Cavazos, president and CEO of the United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (USHCC), says Latinos were disproportionately affected in the five hardest-hit sectors during the pandemic: leisure/hospitality, retail, transportation, construction and general professional. “Hispanic businesses have been disproportionately hurt by the pandemic, and the stimulus packages have fallen short of addressing the needs of these businesses,” he says. “The Hispanic community lost about 25 percent in revenue during the pandemic, according to a recent McKinsey & Company Report.” With so many factors affecting the Hispanic workforce and business community, the work of HCCL—and in turn, the national USHCC— 8

Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Louisiana 2021

became even more critical to ensuring that minority-owned businesses not only made it through the pandemic, but that they were also able to rebound and revitalize their operations.

On a Mission Like all such chambers of commerce, the USHCC serves to promote the economic growth, development and interests of a particular community—in this case, more than 4.7 million Hispanic-owned businesses that contribute more than $800 billion to the American economy every year. Advocating on behalf of a national network of more than 250 local Hispanic chambers, the USHCC focuses on three main areas: access to capital, building capacity and helping Hispanic business enterprises make the connections they need to secure procurement contracts and new growth opportunities. The Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Louisiana shares that same goal—to foster the continued economic growth, development and promotion of Hispanic businesses and their associations—on a more regional scale, directly applying its efforts to the State of Louisiana. HCCL is the conduit between the Hispanic business community and the community at large, and one thing the

pandemic has unequivocally shown is that community connections are fundamental to a business’s prosperity. However, minority populations, especially those who do not speak English, continue to face more obstacles than their Englishspeaking counterparts, and thus, their access to community networking and resources is more limited and can be detrimental to starting or maintaining a successful business. “The barriers that hinder the growth of Hispanic businesses and prevent access to opportunities must be erased to truly bring economic development to the areas and allow for the creation of wealth,” says Pineda. “We at HCCL are committed to advocating for diversity, equity and inclusion as the foundation of this growth throughout the State of Louisiana.” The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated language disparities in the Hispanic community, due to a lack of Spanish-language materials and information regarding the pandemic, government aid and business resources. Pineds says that as soon as the HCCL observed this particular challenge, they sprang into action. “We consistently updated our community with the latest information, in both English and Spanish,” Pineda says. “Furthermore,

when the Small Business Administration, State of Louisiana and other nonprofits and/ or corporate organizations began advertising for relief funds and grants, we helped small business owners through the applications and with technical assistance.” In addition, the HCCL offers financial workshops every month that are most relevant to the community and even maintained this programming virtually during the pandemic. Past workshops include QuickBooks 101 and Best Saving Techniques, both of which guided business leaders through need-toknow practices and technologies. Even outside of regular workshops, HCCL deploys constant communication through digital channels in an effort to educate locals about procurement opportunities in Greater New Orleans and surrounding regions. “Whenever we receive information about an open opportunity, we share that with our community so they can be the first to apply,” Pineda says. “In addition, we work closely with certification entities to encourage business owners to become certified and have a better opportunity to access contracts.” On top of these monthly workshops and seminars, the HCCL hosts seven annual signature events that provide members and attendees with insight from local and/ or national leaders, as well as networking opportunities. The annual Women’s Business

Symposium provides tools for women to enhance their skill sets and to excel amidst the challenges of the pandemic or any other personal or professional barriers. The annual Healthcare, Technology and Innovation Summit provides a space to discuss the latest innovations in healthcare and technology with keynote speakers and various industry professionals. Meanwhile, the Hispanic Business Forum and Tradeshow and the Excelencia Gala further connect Hispanic professionals to the community at large, with the Gala serving as the HCCL’s biggest fundraiser of the year. The way Pineda sees it, staying constantly active is key to being constantly visible, both to the larger business community and to Hispanic professionals who might not be aware of the resources and opportunities the Chamber affords its members. And in order to bring the most up-to-date resources and information to Louisiana, Pineda continues to represent the local business community as a board member for the USHCC. Ramiro Cavazos says Pineda’s and the HCCL’s work exemplifies everything a local chamber should be. “Mayra Pineda and her team at the HCCL have done a great job providing innovative bilingual programming in her community,” Cavazos says. “Last year, we had the opportunity to co-host several Town Halls with the HCCL to share important information about data, federal programs and more. We also co-hosted a conversation with Louisiana Lt. Governor Billy Nungesser where we urged him to support more contracting opportunities for Hispanic and minority-owned businesses.” With every new event, informational session or community initiative, the HCCL strives to enhance its impact on existing members and to reach even more minority-owned businesses leaders who could use a helping hand.

Expanding Horizons & Forging Connections In addition to making the most of its own capabilities, partnerships are equally crucial to advancing the HCCL’s visibility and reach in the community. More than 50 national and local companies support the Chamber through sponsorships and collaborations, including Louisiana Economic Development (LED). Together, LED and HCCL host a Small and Emerging Business Development (SEBD) program, which convenes new and scaling

businesses for a yearlong peer-to-peer learning experience that covers problem solving skills, developing best practices and establishing a supportive network. Among the Chamber’s other new and growing partnerships is JP Morgan Chase, which recently doubled down its commitment to creating equity for Hispanic professionals by becoming HCCL’s Diamond Partner. Pineda says this expanded partnership will further establish a sustainable and diverse business environment. “We will be rolling out new initiatives to meet the community in their space and provide the needed tools and resources to build a more equitable community,” Pineda says. “JP Morgan Chase has been an important partner for the HCCL for many years, but [the company’s] new vision to empower communities aligns with the organization’s work, and the current and urgent needs presented by COVID-19.” One such need was to educate Spanishspeaking populations about COVID-19 vaccines as they became available, as a lack of Spanish language resources regarding distribution, effectiveness and other essential information put marginalized populations at further risk. To that end, HCCL partnered with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Louisiana for an informative #GetTheVax campaign via social media networks, which included Spanish social media graphics with vaccine distribution sites and availability. “We are very proud of this partnership and will continue to update our community with relevant information until everyone has gotten their vaccine,” Pineda says. While it is a common misconception that a business owner must be Hispanic to become a member or partner of the HCCL, the organization encourages businesses and professionals of all backgrounds, ethnicities and industries to join its membership. The Chamber actively seeks partnerships and collaborations with both Hispanic-owned and allied businesses and organizations, because everyone can have an impact on creating an equitable and prosperous economy. “The need for diversity, equity and inclusion within all spheres of society is more necessary than ever before, and becoming more involved with the Hispanic business community is a powerful step in the right direction,” Pineda says. “We have an extraordinarily strong and loyal network, and, once you join, you immediately feel the positivity, dedication and support of our community.” www.hccl.biz

CHANNELING COMMUNITY Ernesto Schweikert, III of KGLA-DT Telemundo 42 New Orleans, uses Spanish-language broadcasting to shine a light on the Hispanic community. By Dylan Evers Hawkins

E

rnesto Schweikert, III, a native of Guatemala, comes from a long line of entrepreneurs. However, he never anticipated being at the helm of New Orleans’ KGLA Radio Tropical 1540AM, let alone KGLA-DT Telemundo 42 New Orleans, the only full-power Spanish-language TV channel in New Orleans. “It’s in my genes,” Schweikert says. “My whole family are entrepreneurs, but I’m a broadcaster by coincidence! I had my own tourguide business for the Latino community visiting New Orleans, and we advertised on the radio station.” When he eventually heard that Radio Tropical was being sold, Schweikert decided to buy it. “I wanted to preserve the only Spanishlanguage station in the area, because I saw its value to the community.” In 2005, Schweikert decided to stay in New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina, operating Radio Tropical using only a small generator. He fielded over a thousand calls each day, providing vital information, urging people to evacuate and finding help for those who needed transportation. Those efforts led to a moment Schweikert says he will never forget. He describes seeing footage of a woman in her 80s, her house flooded, using a small radio by the window to reach his channel for updates during the storm. Seeing that image, Schweikert says he realized the impact his station was making on the community. “I said, ‘Wow. Now I am really proud.’” For their heroic diligence broadcasting during the storm, Schweikert and the staff of Radio Tropical received the The National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ) Broadcast Journalist of the Year Award, as well as other accolades. This recognition, combined with Schweikert’s dedication, prompted investors to support the creation of KGLA-DT Telemundo 42 New Orleans. “They said that if I can do this much with a little daytime radio station, I could do a lot with a TV station,” says Schwikert. In December 2007, KGLA-DT went live, providing local news in Spanish (it is the only regional station to do so) as well as entertainment programming. By that time, the Hispanic population in New Orleans had doubled during rebuilding efforts after Hurricane Katrina, and the fledgling station was an immediate success. Today, Schweikert is CEO and general manager of MayaVision, Inc., also known as KGLA-DT, Telemundo 42 New Orleansand Radio Tropical KGLA 1540AM. Both the TV and radio stations have been highly successful, providing the thriving Hispanic community with music, news, entertainment and Saints games broadcast in Spanish. Schweikert says Hispanic businesses have also found great success by advertising on the stations, and he is always eager to be a resource for other Hispanic professionals. That support only stands to grow, as KGLA-DT completed a $4.8 million overhaul and refresh of their TV Broadcast Center in 2021. Their new main transmitter, new back-up transmitter, transmission line, antenna and tower enhancements will 10

Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Louisiana 2021

help them reach an additional 1.5 million people in 12 parishes and two counties in Mississippi. Schweikert also encourages other Hispanic entrepreneurs to take advantage of another prime resource in the region: the HCCL. “I am proud to be part of the HCCL,” says Schweikert. “The Chamber shows people how to become more productive in their business ambitions. They open a lot of doors that we cannot open. And during the pandemic, they’ve done a lot for the community, providing many of these resources online.” The pandemic has left no community untouched by tragedy, and last year, KGLA-DT lost two wonderful and highly-valued members of its team. That loss is still felt today, but Schweikert and his team seek to honor those they lost by becoming an even stronger beacon of hope. Soon, KGLA-DT plans to expand their service to the Hispanic community by bringing Telemundo to Baton Rouge. “The community is growing, and we’re excited to continue growing with them,” Schweikert says. “We may not have the resources that big companies have, but we have the passion. The things that seem impossible to do, we make them possible.” Photo by Cheryl Gerber

FAMILY, FUN AND FOOD How Los Jefes Grill became a community staple in the heart of Metairie By Dylan Evers Hawkins

I

n 2016, Los Jefes Grill was born from humble beginnings with only a handful of employees and a strong desire to succeed. That it endures today as a thriving business is due to the creativity and resilience of founder Oscar Chimal, who credits his work ethic to his family. “My motivation to become an entrepreneur stems from my family’s sacrifices to get me here,” says Chimal. “I was born and raised in Mexico and migrated to the US at the age of 11. My journey and obstacles that were overcome continue to motivate me each day as an entrepreneur.” It’s this very background that has kept Los Jefes on course as the business grew, never compromising the recipes, techniques and standards Chimal learned growing up. “Los Jefes has stayed true to our original authentic Mexican cuisine concept,” Chimal says. “We use fresh ingredients, keep our original homemade flavors and create a family-friendly environment.” Since its opening, Los Jefes has grown to a staff of 50, hosts an annual Cinco De Mayo festival, a Taco Eating Contest and other events that have established the business as a go-to in Metairie. Like many businesses last year, Los Jefes had to pivot amid pandemic restrictions, offering take-out instead of its usual dine-in experiences. But Chimal saw this moment as an opportunity to give back, and by tapping into his natural creativity, he found ways to reach and engage with the community to keep business running smoothly. “We take pride in the work we do in the community,” Chimal says. “These relationships are key in scaling and growing the business. During the pandemic, we gave away hundreds of free burritos to healthcare workers at major hospitals.” Others noticed Chimal’s proactive approach to honoring frontline workers, and Los Jefes soon partnered with other brands and companies who wanted to sponsor his efforts. Building relationships has always been key for the restaurant’s success, such as Los Jefes’ enduring relationship with the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Louisiana. And by securing so many new and supportive partnerships, Los Jefes was able to host its most elaborate Cinco De Mayo event in May 2021. There, Chimal’s passion, resilience and ingenuity were on full display. “This year was the restaurant’s biggest and most successful Cinco de Mayo event yet,” Chimal says. “We featured all-you-can-eat tacos, vendors, live bands, family activities and our headliner celebrity, DJ Mannie Fresh. We had giveaways and sponsors such as Diamonds Direct, Avion Tequila, Entergy, Geico, Fidelity Bank and more.” Chimal isn’t just concerned with big picture events and initiatives, either. He is always ready to roll up his sleeves to support his staff, taking each new challenge in stride, delegating responsibilities and keeping top-tier quality as his main focus. From kitchen dynamics to marketing and branding, each of these alone can be a full-time Photo by Cheryl Gerber

job, but Chimal believes they’re all vital for success. “I refuse to be complacent,” he says. “I am always building valuable relationships with vendors, customers and influencers.” Chimal’s refusal to settle for ordinary results is what makes Los Jefes so consistently innovative and unique. In 2020, the restaurant received multiple Top Taco awards for many of its specialty recipes, including “Barbacoa Taco” and “Guava margarita.” “Fresh ideas and creativity are very important in captivating our customers,” Chimal says. “Our creativity allows us to grow the brand each year!” With this mindset, the future is bright for Los Jefes. In the Fall, patrons will be able to compete in their taco-eating contest, with the chance to win free tacos for a year. And Chimal has plans to make future Cinco De Mayo Fests even bigger to foster a more tight-knit and supportive community. “My vision is to have all Fat City businesses participate to attract people from other cities,” Chimal says. “I believe Fat City is a very unique area that everyone should know about.” www.hccl.biz

WHERE PASSION MEETS PAINT Painting with a Twist owner Johanna Natale on the rewards of picking up a paintbrush — and doing what you love. By Dylan Evers Hawkins

B

efore she became franchise owner of three Painting with a Twist locations, Johanna Natale was already a believer in the power of art. “I loved going to Painting with a Twist,” she says. “I went by myself, I went with friends. I still have my first painting!” So, when Natale’s family moved from Houston back to Metairie in 2018, the pivot from a corporate job to franchise-owner felt natural. On the heels of several years of work as an account and sales executive, Natale began researching the “paint and sip” industry and noticed that three Painting with a Twist locations—Baton Rouge, Metairie and Gretna—were available for purchase. Originally conceived in Mandeville in 2007 by Cathy Deano and Renee Maloney, Painting with a Twist offers an experience to relax, unwind and be creative. It has since expanded to over 300 franchise locations across the nation. “I wanted to be involved with something that brought joy to the community,” Natale says. “It made perfect sense for me, not only because Painting with a Twist is the leader of the paint and sip industry, but also this was where they were founded.” Natale says the entrepreneurial spirit runs in her family. She was just two years old when her parents migrated from Honduras to the Greater New Orleans area, where Natale’s mother soon became the owner of a Hispanic grocery store. Watching her mother persevere in a new environment taught Natale a valuable lesson about finding and sticking with a passion. “My mother was a small business owner,” Natale says. “She owned Kenner Supermarket, at the time one of only a few Hispanic grocery stores in the whole of metro New Orleans. We noticed that she liked what she did, and we definitely inherited an entrepreneurial spark from her that runs in the family. My sister owns her own business, and I majored in business. It’s a lot easier to go to work when you find something you’re passionate about.” Becoming a business owner was a smooth transition for Natale, who spent years studying and gaining real-world experience before setting out on her own ventures. She constantly feeds creative energy into her business, expanding offerings and 12

Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Louisiana 2021

activities to share the healing power of art with as many people as possible. In addition to classes, Painting with a Twist hosts birthday parties, baby showers, date nights, girls’ night out, team-building experiences and programs for kids. “Most of our customers have never picked up a paintbrush,” Natale says. “They’re there for the experience.” For Natale, knowing that people are creating lifelong memories is one of the most rewarding aspects of the business. In 2020, when people couldn’t take in-person classes due to the pandemic, she and her team found a different way to create the experience. “Twist at Home” was born. “The kit includes materials and step-by-step video instructions,” Natale says. “It took off! People love it. We started doing virtual classes. Companies wanted to continue team-building, even though they couldn’t get together in-person.” The morale boost was in high demand, and Natale says virtual classes have been able to reach vulnerable members of the community. “We did a virtual event for kids who are cancer patients. It was so rewarding! It was a niche we didn’t realize existed, and we’re definitely going to continue offering these events.” Lifting spirits is part of the mission of Painting with a Twist, which Natale believes made harnessing and sharing the power of art even more important during the COVID-19 pandemic. Natale also found tremendous comfort and support in her partnership with the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Louisiana, and she cites President Mayra Pineda as a source of inspiration and guidance through difficult times. “Once I found out that Mayra was leading the HCCL, I knew I wanted to be a member,” Natale says. “I knew Mayra would represent the needs of Hispanic-owned businesses in legislation, and I was also certain that she would find many resources and opportunities to help make our businesses succeed. The Chamber allows you to meet other business owners in order to support and patronize each other’s businesses.” Even as the world eases back into normalcy, Natale says she’ll continue working to reach more and more people who could use a little light in their days. “Painting with a Twist was born during a catastrophic time, right after Hurricane Katrina,” Natale says. “And luckily, during this dark time, we’re able to lighten spirits as well. Sometimes an opportunity presents itself, not dressed the way you think it should be.” Photo by Cheryl Gerber

DIRECTORIO 2021

IN CONVERSATION: Cornelio Pacheco, President & Owner of AccounTax Business Group, LLC AccounTax Business Group is a full-service accounting firm dedicated to giving new and established businesses the keys to success. Their wide range of services include everything from QuickBooks training, setup and troubleshooting to tax preparation, planning, filing and audit representation. As a Hispanic business owner, President Cornelio Pacheco is dedicated to supporting and scaling minority-owned businesses and nonprofits of all sizes. Here, he speaks with the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Louisiana about his inspirations, professional journey and advice for budding professionals.

How did AccounTax get started? The company formally started after Hurricane Katrina, in January 2006. As we know, there was a massive closure of businesses, including the place where I was working at the time, and I forced myself to look for business opportunities. We started from a space in my own home. Subsequently, we have grown until this moment, where we have nine employees and two offices, one in New Orleans and one in Baton Rouge. What is the team culture at AccounTax, and how has your staff grown since opening? We started as a one-man company. We are always looking to grow, and the team has had new additions. We function as a good team, almost like a family, where everyone does their job, and together we find the best way to work and help each other out. That is one of the things that identify us as a company. We have a very positive work environment, where each person, from their individuality, contributes something different to the team.

The pandemic brought hardships to many industries. Did AccounTax encounter any challenges, and how did you address them? For my company, the pandemic was a great opportunity to grow. With all the changes and all the assistance that companies needed in order to survive, for example, government financial aid programs, we were able to become a key piece between the governments, the companies and individuals. People who didn’t do their taxes had the need to do so in order to apply for financial aid. We had a privileged place during this pandemic where we became a bridge and managed to help many people, and at the same time, we managed to grow.

What achievement are you most proud of? What makes me most proud is being able to give people a job and help them grow. To know that we are a pillar in the community, where around eight families have a stable job, where they can learn and be happy. Also, I’m proud to see my community grow; to see the companies that have trusted us to help them with their process become bigger, more stable and better What motivated you to become an entrepreneur? Did you always positioned is just amazing. know you want to own your own business? Life keeps changing. With Katrina, the conditions of the city and the state of Louisiana What is your vision for Accountax Business Group’s future? Being able changed, and many people, like me, lost their jobs. I was forced to to continue opening more stores in other cities, that clearly implies being find strategies to be able to do what I like, so, resorting to creativity, able to employ more people. To continue helping people who need it, I decided to start a small business. Having my own company was and to be allowed to continue doing what we have been doing up to now. always a dream. I always knew it was something I was going to do in the future. What advice do you have for young people who want to become entrepreneurs? GO FOR IT! Having your own business is the best thing What does a typical day at AccounTax look like? The working you can do. I am your number one fan, and I will support you along the day varies; it depends on what month it is. In December, we usually way. We are here to help the Hispanic community, and we always want have more time for recreation and to get to know each other. In tax to share the information we have with the community. In the same way, we all assume the responsibility provide advice to Spanish-speaking people. So the language barrier is to do our job in the best way, but also to have fun while we do it. HCCL’s Women in Business

Cultivating Opportunity Delta Personnel owner and CEO Teresa Lawrence on staying the course and helping others achieve their goals. By Dylan Evers Hawkins

S

ome people find change daunting. Others thrive under pressure. For Teresa Lawrence, the ability to turn obstacles into opportunities has been a hallmark of her success. Of course, that success didn’t happen overnight. It took years of hard work, overcoming a learning curve and extensive networking to turn Delta Personnel into the multi-million dollar enterprise it is now. “I took each challenge one by one and worked diligently to grow Delta over the years,” Lawrence says. Now, Delta Personnel is a thriving staffing company in New Orleans, helping others turn their setbacks into success. Even still, Lawrence says she never anticipated becoming an entrepreneur until 1988, when she and her husband quit their jobs to take over her ailing father-in-law’s business. “The idea of owning and managing a business never entered my mind!” she says. “When I took over the company, it was struggling. We had no formal training, and spent years trying to get out of debt and just survive.” The unexpected situation still presented an opportunity for growth, however, and Lawrence began refining her abilities. Along the way, she discovered a natural talent, one that would eventually prove handy in forging her own entrepreneurial path. “This dramatic event sharpened my sales skills, and closing deals became my specialty,” Lawrence says. In 2000, she became the sole owner of Delta Personnel, but not long after, another setback tested Lawrence’s resilience. “Just when I felt we had really turned things around, our community was devastated by Hurricane Katrina,” Lawrence recalls. “It brought immeasurable changes not just to my business, but to an entire community.” Lawrence is no stranger to uncertainty. Born in Cuba, she migrated to the United States with her mother and brother in search of a better life. “My mother and grandmother were a huge inspiration to me,” she says. “They instilled in us the drive to want the best for ourselves and our families.” With her business struggling after Katrina, Lawrence found strength in her network. Other members from WBENC, NMSDC and WBEC South pointed her towards executive programs. Lawrence graduated from the Tuck School of Business-WBENC Executive Program and the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses Program, using tools from those programs to revive her business. “I started to see light at the end of the tunnel,” she says. Lawrence was also encouraged by a friend to join the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Louisiana, a community resource she says has had an 14

immeasurable impact on her personal and professional growth since she became a member in 2010. While she says networking of any kind is essential to professional development, Lawrence believes finding specific networks that meet the needs of diverse populations is one of the best ways for minority entrepreneurs and business leaders to learn how to effectively harness their skills and knowledge. “Through HCCL, I have been able to meet key influencers in our local community, as well as outside our Hispanic business community, that have opened many doors for me,” Lawrence says. “Being a woman/ minority-owned global provider of HR and staffing solutions, I have appreciated and benefited from the inclusivity and personal support HCCL has provided to me, as well as to many of my constituents. Staying connected to the HCCL and other organizations is essential to the growth of my business and to other minority-owned businesses.” Today, Delta has been in operation for over 50 years, placing over 40,000 workers in positions across the U.S. And in 2020, Lawrence became the majority owner and CEO of Delta Administrative Services, LLC., a professional employer organization with room for expansion into new industries and lives. Throughout it all, Lawrence has stayed true to her values, and although there were obstacles along the way, she is proud that she was not only able to meet her goals, but to go further than she ever anticipated. “My primary focus was to build a company I could be proud of,” Lawrence says. “My heart, then and now, is dedicated to helping people find work and put food on the table for their families.” Lawrence also remains an advocate for diversity. She actively pushes for opportunities for minority and women-owned businesses and reminds her professional peers that “there is no equity without diversity.” “As an immigrant, Latina and business owner, I will not forget where I came from, or take the opportunities I have been given for granted,” Lawrence says. “The biggest lesson I have learned through the years is that everything happens in cycles. The best thing you can do is to expect change and stay focused.” Photo by Cheryl Gerber

2021

Empowering Entrepreneurs Using her own experiences, WBEC South’s Tiffany Carter teaches other women the business playbook By Dylan Evers Hawkins

T

iffany Carter always knew she wanted to break down barriers. Born and raised in New Orleans, she initially dreamed of being a sports journalist. “I wanted to be on the sidelines at football games,” Carter says with a laugh. “I wanted to handle the tough questions!” But after Hurricane Katrina devastated small businesses, Carter found that her skills were needed elsewhere. So, she became a consultant for the Louisiana Department of Transportation, helping small businesses market themselves. That’s when helping small businesses grow became Carter’s mission. “A lot of companies just didn’t know how to gain momentum and get back on their feet,” she says. “It wasn’t just about marketing. It was about bonding and access to capital and networking. The seeds were planted then of the work that I am doing now.” From there, Carter began her evolution into a “full-fledged business coach.” After fifteen years of procurement and contracting experience, she became a consultant for Regional Transit Authority’s rail expansion, and in 2014, she joined the Sewerage & Water Board of New Orleans as the Director of the Disadvantaged Business Enterprise, a role in which she streamlined the certification process for small businesses. Carter’s next turning point came in 2016, when was offered the position of Director of the Department of Procurement at the Port of New Orleans. “It was a tremendous opportunity,” Carter says. “Just to be a woman of color in maritime, which is typically a male-dominated industry.” Throughout her career, Carter found that she was often the only woman in the room, and on top of that, was often the only woman of color. Observing this pattern — and a growing desire to change it — inspired Carter to take yet another big step five years later. In 2021, Carter left the Port to become the director for the Enterprising Women of Color Business Center, part of The Women’s Business Enterprise Council South (WBEC South). “At the Port, I was the decision-maker in multi-million dollar contracts,” she says, “And I walked away from all of that to teach other women how to do it, too. I told them, ‘I’m not leaving — I’ll be coming back with a group of women. We’re going to show up, and we’re going to be in the room, and we’re going to ask questions.’” Now, Carter helps other women find their footing and carve a path forward as entrepreneurs. Her work serves to challenge both Photo by Forest Photography

gender and racial disparities in the workplace, as well as to create a new pattern of equity for future generations. “This program is so wonderful and purposeful,” she says. “I did it alone, but they don’t have to. We have a lot of resources between us.” One of those resources is the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Louisiana, whose own equity-driven mission shares a distinct overlap with Carter’s. The relationship between HCCL and the Enterprising Women of Color Business Center is mutually beneficial, as Hispanic business owners are able to connect to Carter’s program, leading to a diversified workforce and more plentiful opportunities for minority professionals in the region. Carter’s advice to budding entrepreneurs? “You don’t have to know it all! Use the resources available to you,” she says. “Many programs, like mine, are free of cost. We can empower you. You don’t walk in this space alone. “And,” she adds, “be fearless. You’re good at what you do, and the world deserves what you have to offer.” www.hccl.biz

Learning and Growing Together HCCLF helps entire families understand virtual-learning platforms By Suzanne Pfefferle Tafur

I

n the spring of 2020, as cases of COVID-19 swept through the region, school campuses promptly shut down to protect the safety of students, faculty and their families. Classes – along with lectures, exams, homework and everything that comes with them – continued via virtual learning. Students connected with teachers and classmates by logging onto Zoom and other online platforms. They sat in front of a computer for several hours a day, navigating the internet and manipulating software that many parents have never heard of. But when kids needed help with homework and technical difficulties, caretakers were put to the test – especially Spanishspeaking parents who had to face an added language barrier

before they could even help their children with their curriculum. The Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Louisiana Foundation (HCCLF) and the Jefferson Parish School System (JPSS) took notice. The organizations partnered to create a basic computer program for literacy and technical assistance, with classes covering fundamental computer programs and functions meant to benefit adult students in more ways than one. “We really wanted to make sure that our parents got some technology literacy skills that will help parents assist their kids in their education, but then also provide technology skills that they can apply to other aspects of their lives,” says James Gray, JPSS superintendent. www.hccl.biz

17

HISPANIC CHAMBER OF COMMERCE OF LOUISIANA

Longtime HCCL partner Cox Communications provided laptops, HCCLF recruited participants and distributed information to the Hispanic community, and members of the JPSS staff conducted the classes. A total of six sessions were held on both the East Bank and the West Bank of metro New Orleans. “We wanted to provide flexibility for our parents in terms of location, and try to make it as easy as we possibly can,” Gray says. “One of the barriers that we know is: getting to these locations on time. And so, we want to make them in the afternoons, on both sides of the river, to make sure that we can accommodate parents.” According to Gray and Angelica Rivera, HCCLF Chair, parents were eager to participate and were excited to see their unique needs being addressed by community organizations. “We got really good feedback from that program, and it’s something that we plan to keep doing in the future,” Rivera says. While it operates as an extension of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Louisiana, which focuses on high-level economic development initiatives, the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Louisiana Foundation targets its efforts on language development, digital literacy and other soft skills that, for many Hispanic professionals, might stand in the way of opportunities. The partnership with JPSS to create the basic computer program for literacy and technical assistance is just one of many such initiatives and partnerships. HCCLF and Delgado Community

18

Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Louisiana 2021

College also teamed up to offer free English as a Second Language (ESL) classes that helped students to improve their English reading, writing, speaking and listening skills. The Foundation also offers Entrepreneurship Training Courses, with seminars covering topics related to business management, in addition to a robust Bilingual Workforce Training & Business Development Program for Hispanic individuals searching for lucrative, meaningful employment. Connectivity and fair access is always top priority for HCCLF, and Rivera says they make their services available for basic tasks like filling out applications to higher level professional needs like preparing for an interview, finding resources to launch their business or maintaining efficiency while on the job. “We teach people how to access the computer and basic programs so they can get up to date with the technology,” Rivera says. “We help people work on their résumé in order for them to find good employment, we help small companies with some technical assistance, and we also offer workshops to help them grow and go to the next level.” Technology and digital literacy is woven throughout most of HCCLF’s programs, with much of this programming conducted in partnership with tech organizations including Cox, AT&T, Verizon Wireless and UnidosUS, who Rivera calls “really good partners.” But because of its importance in everyday life, digital literacy

DIRECTORIO 2021

is also the basis of an entire course launched by HCCLF and Verizon last year. Prior to the pandemic, lessons were held at learning centers equipped with mobile technologies and professional software, and the classes pivoted to a virtual format when safety mandates halted in-person lessons. For those without computers at home, HCCLF and Cox’s Computer Loan Program made it easy for students to continue learning. The Foundation plans to continue its work by building on what they’ve already established, and that includes maintaining partnerships like the one with JPSS. “We hope to expand our bilingual programming to include STEM education for youth, develop additional workforce development courses, continue our digital literacy courses to improve lives, and build partnerships with agencies, both public and private, to ensure we have access to the most important information,” Rivera says. Gray echoes this sentiment for JPSS. He describes the 2020 program as “Level One,” noting that he hopes to add levels so adult students can broaden their computer skills, and ultimately further their professional careers. “The goal is to build opportunities for parents of our students, and to give them the skills that will make them more employable,” Gray says. “Our kids will see their parents become more successful.” Rivera says that because the program was successful during

a pandemic, when they were forced to operate under unusual circumstances, the initiative has incredible potential in future iterations. The same is true for HCCLF’s digital literacy and small business development programs, which will help Hispanic professionals get even closer to the economic opportunities as the region recovers from the pandemic. “We feel really proud,” Rivera says. “We’re always looking for new partners and new ideas to help us serve the community in new ways and meet their needs. That’s always been our goal.”

HYCP went virtual with their Lunch and Learn event and discussed the importance of taking care of one’s mental health (watch the recording on the Chamber’s Facebook page!) with the help of three incredible mental health professionals. HCYP has also had committee members volunteer their time and talents at vaccination events in the city and have offered support to the Hispanic Chamber Foundation’s events. collection of businesses—it is the community I never expected. Events such as the Hispanic Business Conference & Trade Show, the Women’s Symposium, the annual Town Hall and the joint luncheon with the Baton Rouge Chamber provide valuable opportunities for business growth and networking. In addition, the Chamber has taken a leadership role in providing a focus on supplier diversity, financial literacy and gaining skills any small business should have access to. “ Our brand VIVA NOLA Magazine has

enjoyed recognition during its three years in business by providing relevant content and representing a vibrant, resilient Latino community in print, digital and multimedia formats. During a time of uncertainty, we were fortunate to have the equipment and resources to provide live, critical information to the Spanishspeaking audience. These same resources, paired with years of live broadcasting expertise, were valuable to help the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce pivot in its hybrid and virtual event capacity. We consulted and designed broadcast quality, virtual and hybrid events that allowed the organization to continue holding its signature events by bringing on remote speakers and seamlessly connecting them with the Chamber’s member base and sponsors. Working with the Hispanic Chamber has allowed us to add these services to our portfolio and connect with other organizations that can trust us to provide the expertise, quality, equipment and knowledgeable team for their creative and video production needs. At VIVA NOLA Magazine and VN Media Pro, we are grateful for the connections that we have been able to foster through our membership and partnership with the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Louisiana. We look forward to serving our corporate community through multi-platform marketing, advertising and creative services. We take pride in being a woman, minority-owned business and in representing our clients with professionalism and integrity.”
