On the Cover “Sugarplum Ball” Co-Chairs Cherie Albro and Jamie Cangelosi with Children’s Hospital patients and brothers Christopher (9) and Henry (7) Dufrene, stand outside what will soon become one of two family housing units for Children’s Hospital patient families. Christopher and Henry were both born with congenital heart defects and have had numerous surgeries and procedures at Children’s Hospital. Many patients and families like the Dufrenes travel from around Louisiana and the Gulf South to receive care at Children’s

Hospital. Often, families must stay in the hospital with their child, for days and even months at a time, far from their homes. The 36th annual “Sugarplum Ball” aims to help provide a solution to this challenge. Co-Chairs Albro and Cangelosi have been hard at work planning this year’s “Sugarplum Ball,” the hospital’s largest charitable fundraising event of the year. On April 1, friends of Children’s Hospital will gather together at the New Orleans Public Belt Railroad for the ball, themed “Casino Royale: A Night in Monte Carlo.” Each year,

proceeds from the event are allocated to a specific project that will help the hospital give the most comprehensive care to its young patients. This year’s ball will benefit the Patient Family Housing Initiative, on-site family housing that will provide 28 private suites for families. The facilities will be located across Henry Clay Avenue and will allow parents to stay close to their child in the hospital with the comforts of home. February Events

February is a fun-filled month with Valentine’s Day in the center and Carnival season running the entire month. In this issue, we’re making your shopping, planning and partying easier, with What’s Hot for Valentine’s Day, a feature on spring restaurant specials and our annual Couture Wedding Guide. To pull on your heartstrings a little further, we present photographer Jeff Strout’s “Isn’t It Golden,” in which four couples married over 50 years share some of their secrets for long and happy relationships. As we gear up for months heavy with balls, galas and parties, I want to go back to our December 2016 issue for a moment. In our Snapshots section we highlighted the 50th anniversary celebration of Mrs. Herman deBachellé Seebold’s gift of her home to the Women’s Guild of the New Orleans Opera Association. Recently, Renaissance Publishing’s Editor-in-Chief Errol Laborde received a brochure printed in 1974 outlining the history of the home, its donation, its renovation and the Guild itself. Some facts I found interesting include: in the formal double parlor hang “two chandeliers of fire-crystal and gilt from a Royal Palace in St. Petersburg, Russia;” the crest of the Guild portrays a shield with four quadrants representing “Music, Art, Drama and Dance,” flanked by the figures of Mimi of La Boheme and Carmen; and the brochure’s final statement, “The Home stands in stately beauty and elegance amid lovely gardens. It is to be treasured and preserved by all of us through the years to come and the generations ahead.” We hope you enjoy your February and this issue,

Musical Memories LPO and Poydras Home partner for Soul Strings for Seniors By Catherine Freeman

New Orleans’ Carnival season offers entertainment for all ages at our Mardi Gras parades, recognized world-wide for their elaborate, creative and clever themes. While I’m mesmerized by the artistic craftsmanship and labor that go into producing floats for a parade, the reason I clamor for the perfect spot on the sidewalk is the marching bands. There is something about the pounding drum beat I feel deep in my stomach and the contagious melodies of the brass sections that gives me goose bumps. As each band passes by, I smile watching friends and strangers around me unite for a brief moment with joy and gratitude for the music enveloping us. Music can make us generally happier people, and it provides a multitude of additional health benefits. A 15-week music therapy program launched in September 2016 through a unique community partnership between Poydras Home and the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra combines each organization’s talents to benefit seniors. Expanding the successful Soul Strings music therapy-informed program currently serving students and adults with developmental disabilities, this new program, Soul Strings for Seniors: Musical Memories, provides sensory and intellectual stimulation to an enthusiastic group of Poydras Home residents through exposure to creative culture. LPO Director of Philanthropy Mimi Kruger explains, “Thanks to Whitney Bank, Soul Strings for Seniors: Musical Memories has been designed to engage those Poydras Home residents who have an Alzheimer’s or dementia diagnosis.” Founded in 1817, Poydras Home works to respect and preserve the dignity of the human spirit among the elderly by continuing legacy care through

14 st. charles Avenue february 2017

quality supportive services for the elderly, promoting understanding for their particular needs and advocating on their behalf. A smile of recognition upon hearing a familiar tune can often be the catalyst necessary to produce conversation starters, and enhanced memory and mood elevation for seniors. Each session with the 13 to 17 Poydras Home residents focuses on a variety of specifically targeted activities that increase the quality of life and functional skill sets of seniors in need of memory care. Poydras Home Vice President of Resident Affairs Erin Kolb notes, “The LPO musicians are working with a licensed music therapist in sessions that complement and reinforce therapy goals such as improving communication, memory and attention skills. The intimate setting with small groups of our residents allows the LPO musicians to extend their talents into a new direction impacting wellness as they reach members of our resident population who can find traditional modes of communication to be difficult.” In addition to the weekly workshops, which family members are encouraged to attend, Poydras Home participants are also invited to attend a number of open rehearsals

of the full LPO. Residents’ families appreciate the meaningful and uplifting interaction in addition to the behavioral and social long-term benefits experienced by their loved ones. “Poydras Home’s long history of missiondriven dedication to provide expert level memory support to all residents affected by Alzheimer’s and other dementias make us ideal candidates to populate this innovative program with the LPO,” says Poydras Home CEO Jay Rive. “We are proud participants in this enriching music therapy endeavor that can broaden the depth of positive life experience for our residents.” While both organizations are hopeful the program will continue into the fall, Soul Strings for Seniors: Musical Memories has already greatly brightened the lives of seniors and their families in New Orleans. n

A little more … The LPO (LPOMusic.com) offers a 36-week season with more than 120 performances in New Orleans and across multi-parish areas. It is the oldest full-time musician-governed and collaboratively operated orchestra in the U.S.

Zoo Camp Exploring more than just animals at Audubon Zoo By CeCe Colhoun

Our school holiday or winter break this year was 16 days long – basically half of a month. Going from the daily routine of school where meals, rest time, bed time and play is all perfectly scheduled, this amount of time off can really shake up kids, and even more so parents. One of New Orleans’ best kept secrets in my opinion are the holiday zoo camps offered at Audubon Zoo. Manager Charlotte Page, an old friend I’ve known for many years ago since my own sleep-away camp in Brevard, North Carolina, is a seasoned veteran in the world of camps. She knows better than anyone that camp is an institution where kids can satisfy their need for physical play, creative expression and cooperation in their community. Camp helps build tools that allow children to gain self-esteem, selfreliance and pro-social behaviors by meeting new children. This helps kids practice working together, making choices and taking responsibility. They also experience interactions with positive role models in the camp counselors and interact with these adults in a way that’s sometimes more relaxing and reflective than their normal school environments. The camp experience offers this nurturing environment that allows children to develop their creative skills, build independence and self-reliance in order to gain confidence. If your child has a passion for animals, or is just looking for something new that’s fun, Zoo Camp at Audubon Zoo is the place to be! Besides being offered during most school holidays, zoo camp is also offered during the summer. Children are engaged in many activities, carefully crafted around a curriculum that incorporates the love of animals along with arts and crafts. Daily zoo time is, of course, a part of camp, as well as lots of animal encounters and behind-the-scenes tours. My kids came home telling me about their train rides to each of the animal dens, and they

16 st. charles Avenue february 2017

were spouting off knowledge about the length of giraffe’s neck! They also have lots of time to explore nature and free time to play outdoors. With its beautiful oak trees and lush greenery surrounding, I can imagine no better place for a child to roam free. For summer campers, the fun doesn’t stop there. The cool zoo and the lazy river are now a part of the weekly schedule! The cool zoo and lazy river are described as “a wild and wet splash park ... Highlights include Gator Run, jumping water spouts, a huge alligator water slide, spider monkey soakers and water-spitting snakes. … The splash park offers three different splash zones with one area specifically for toddlers and younger kids. ...Visitor favorites include the 750-foot lazy river with two sand beaches, lounge chairs, four water cannons, two water curtains and jumping jets. ... Gator Run also offers a food cart concession area, outdoor seating, additional showers and restrooms. Rafts are free for all floaters and kids under 48 inches will need a life jacket (supplied by Audubon Zoo).” At Zoo Camp, you can be sure that your Campers are in a very nurturing environment. They are arranged into classes

by age groups that extend to 4-12 years and are supervised four to five staff per group. Each group is led by a certified teacher or Zoo Camp Expert. The camper to counselor ratio is one to six. Camp offers a discounted rate to zoo members, and camp tuition varies depending on length of session. n

Just the Facts •

Fees: $250 per week for Members; $295 per week for non-members

Camp runs: 9 a.m.-3 p.m.

Before care ($7 per day) available at 7:30 a.m.

Per the zoo: “Audubon Nature Institute strives to accommodate all interested children. Please understand that our camps are very active, with multiple transitions and sensory changes throughout the day. All campers are expected to follow directions and safety rules. If you have specific concerns, please contact our camp director Charlotte Page at 212-5357 or cpage@auduboninstitute.org to discuss your child’s needs. Lip Service Kisser care By Lorin Gaudin

For kissing, pursing, sipping champagne and more, there’s nothing sexier than a beautiful mouth with soft, smooth, plump lips. During cold weather months, dry, chilly air can wreak havoc on the lips’ tender skin, causing chapping, cracking and peeling. Unsightly for sure, but damaged lips can also be painful. There are tons of products on the market to help with healing, but time, hydration (a good lip balm) and eating well can all aid. An expert quoted by Women’s Health recently talked about how keeping lips moist and pretty requires the body to “constantly replace old skin cells with new ones.” What might help “regulate turnover so that it happens all the time?” Walnuts. Packed with Omega-3 fats, walnuts and fish are considered foods that may help ensure healthy lips. Walnuts are meaty, distinctly flavored and rich in polyunsaturated fats. Technically, walnuts are the seed of a drupe, not a true botanical nut, and they’re the oldest known tree food, dating back to 10,000 B.C. Considered medicinal, walnuts are said to help battle bad breath, reduce inflammation and heal wounds. Introduced to California in the 1700s, walnuts have long been a popular salad ingredient. One serving of walnuts, one ounce, is about 12-14 shelled halves or ¼-cup. Cracked and eaten out of hand, walnuts are also delicious added to yogurt and baked goods, or tossed onto oatmeal. In addition to eating walnuts to enhance lip health, there are some great treatment and cosmetic products on the market. Lip scrubs made with fine sugar and emollients are great for helping reduce dry, flaky skin. Best done in the shower, gently rub a small amount of scrub across closed lips, taking care to rinse well and gently pat dry. Follow with a lip balm in the morning before lipstick, and slather some on again at night before bed. With lips in top condition, statementmaking and trendy matte lip creams look especially beautiful. Even those who 18 st. charles Avenue february 2017

only wear a bit of color or gloss will see improvement in lip texture and product staying-power. From designer to drugstore, there are exfoliators, balms and treatments for all.

has always been my most adventurous dining companion, and we’ve shared many memorable meals in her 20 years. Then, three years ago, she went vegan, and when the thrill of vegan pho quickly wore off for me the adventure came to a halt. The segue to a vegetarian lifestyle 18 months ago brought back some of the fun, but I was thrilled when she recently resumed her former lifestyle with a health-driven approach to eating pretty much anything. Hooray! In celebration, we hit up a collection of places. Seither’s Seafood is a small, popular seafood joint tucked into a commercial strip in Harahan. We started with a straightforward dozen Gulf oysters that will please fans of steak-sized raw oysters. From there, nothing else is straightforward at Seither’s. There is a kinda-sorta Asian but sometimes French Creole and sometimes Cajun bent playing out. The Shrimp OMG combines a pile of nicely fried shrimp with four sauces – some sweet, others savory – swirled together in a kaleidoscope. The Eggplant Harahan features fried discs arranged in a stack with layers of seafood dressing between them. Boiled shrimp and a lavish dose of cream sauce complete the rich concoction.

When we saw a lady lunching on a massive unidentifiable mound we had to inquire. It was the Tuna Volcano. The kitchen starts with a fried bowl of the sort that usually holds a taco salad. The bowl is turned upside down, a hole is punched into it and the mound is filled with “fried, shrimp, oysters or some other surprise from the kitchen,” our waitress said. The sides of the volcano are covered in slabs of seared tuna and slices of avocado. The volcano effect is provided by massive protrusion of creamy snow crab salad topped by the kind of crunchy bits you find in sushi rolls. It is a sight to behold. Cecilia and I have spent many an afternoon cruising around the region munching out of gas stations, so Shawarma on the Go was on our list. The line within was impressive as people waited patiently for what turned out to be excellent carved-toorder gyro meat that was piled up on hefty sandwiches. The chicken shawarma plate was also fresh and plentiful, and the

The star of the Falafel Platter is crisp on the outside and light and fluffy on the inside, and it comes with creamy hummus, slaw, greens, tahini, zhoug and toum. prices are thrifty. Two can dine lavishly for $20. We did wonder about the couple who seemed to be enjoying a romantic meal at an outdoor table adjacent to the pump where I filled my car with high octane, though. We had an impromptu dinner party one night and fed everyone takeout (served on china, of course) from Ideal Market, where the produce is arranged in neat, towering, visually appealing vertical rows by color. Head to the back of the market to the steam table for unforgettable carne asada, yellow rice, roasted pork loin, crisp fried fish, grilled chicken and chicken mole. We made some sangria and our guests raved about the meal all night long. We completed that week’s dining adventure at Taqueria Corona, a family favorite Cecilia has long missed. We ordered the same thing we always did before the whole vegan thing started: a Numero Tres with a shrimp flauta, a bean burrito and shrimp, fried fish and chorizo tacos. When she was a child the satisfying platter could be had for less than $10. Now, at $16.75, it’s still one of the area’s great bargains and it easily feeds two with plenty of leftovers. n

KID smART raised more funds than ever to support arts-based learning in schools. By Shelby Simon

The 2016 “Cocktails for KID smART” was a record-breaking fundraising year for the organization, which supports arts-integration programming in 12 New Orleans schools, enabling more than 3,000 students to benefit from interactive arts-based learning. The event took place at the home of Elly and Merritt Lane, which already featured art by Nicole Charbonnet. A giclée of Charbonnet’s painting “Safari No. 7” was offered to sponsors and patrons. Event Chairs were Suzanne Dumez and Jill McKay Pipes. Board chair Scott Howard, Fund Development Committee Chair Phil Gunn, Executive Director Echo Olander and featured artist Nicole Charbonnet were all in attendance. Joel Catering provided a delectable selection of treats, including artichoke beignets, petit southern fried green tomatoes, creole stuffed chicken, shaved and grilled Brussel sprouts salad, corn maque choux, cheesecake lollipops and mini s’more blondies. Meschiya Lake, Tom McDermott and Tuba Skinny provided musical entertainment. The KID smART programming transforms a typical learning system into a creative, fun experience: for example, a teaching team might teach students fractions through mixing paint colors, or students might learn the stages of the water cycle through dance and movement. This year, six school leaders from Creative Schools were in attendance. n

United Way of Southeast Louisiana honored Alexis Hocevar with its highest award. By Shelby Simon

Alexis Hocevar, philanthropist, entrepreneur, volunteer and recently retired Vice President/General Manager of Enterprise Holdings Inc., was honored as the 2016 recipient of Alexis de Tocqueville Award in a November 2 ceremony at the Hyatt Regency New Orleans. The United Way of Southeast Louisiana’s highest award for exemplary leadership in volunteerism and philanthropy was presented to Hocevar for his leadership in the transportation industry and support of several nonprofits. The event featured a classic New Orleans party atmosphere with festive décor, colorful fall florals by Perfect Presentations Floral & Event Designs and music by the Nayo Jones Experience. An umbrella-twirling Hocevar led the lively group in a second-line into dinner. After a list of Hocevar’s accomplishments were read to the crowd, the question was asked “Has he ever been honored for all his good work for United Way?” Immediately Nayo Jones began singing “At Last” with vocals created specifically for Hocevar, which received thunderous applause and laughter. After receiving the award, Hocevar thanked United Way, the Tocqueville Society and his wife Debbie and their children. Hocevar was joined on stage by former Tocqueville Award recipients including: Bob Merrick, David Fennelly, Carol Wise, Kim Sport, Frank Stewart and Florence Schornstein. It is United Way’s goal to eradicate poverty in Southeast Louisiana. With the help of community leaders such as Alexis Hocevar, United Way of Southeast Louisiana is strategically investing in programs, initiatives, collaborations and advocacy efforts to meet the greatest needs in Jefferson, Orleans, Plaquemines, St. Bernard, St. Tammany, Tangipahoa and Washington parishes. n

The 2016 “Distinguished Alumni Gala” was the culmination of a weeklong schedule of events entitled “Making History: A Celebration of University of New Orleans Leadership,” which included the formal investiture of the university’s seventh leader, President John W. Nicklow. The gala was a major civic event to strengthen community engagement and pride in UNO and prominently celebrate the university’s important contributions to the city and region. The gala’s venue was a testament to UNO’s lasting impact on the community – the National World War II Museum was conceived in UNO’s history department by professors Stephen Ambrose and Nick Mueller, the latter of whom currently serves as the museum’s president and CEO. Barbara Johnson served as Event Chair and Norman Robinson served as Emcee. Both UNO President John Nicklow and Nick Mueller spoke at the gala. Mark Romig was bestowed with the UNO International Alumni Association’s top honor as the Homer L. Hitt Distinguished Alumni honoree. Clancy DuBos and U.S. Judge Jay Zainey introduced Romig with brief personal remarks. Additional college honorees were: College of Business Administration, Rick Gratia; College of Engineering, Joe Becker; College of Liberal Arts, Education and Human Development, Melissa Ehlinger and Donna W. Joseph; College of Science, J. Michael Fitzpatrick; and Interdisciplinary Studies, Gerard Williams. Entertainment was provided by the University of New Orleans Jazz Band and the National World War II Museum Victory Belles. The silent auction featured popular experience packages, including a ride in the Krewe of Pygmalion, budding broadcast “Kids on Camera” with WWL-TV, a coaching session with former UNO baseball coach Ron Maestri, fishing with Sheriff Newell Normand, an exclusive National World War II Museum Behind the Lines experience, vacation packages and more. The “Moonlight on the River Gala” raised more than $167,000 for Magnolia Community Services, which supports the residential, vocational, social and wellness needs of adults with developmental disabilities in the New Orleans community. Event Chairs were Jeanne Gallo, Marion Eagan and Karen Oertling. Spacious tents and café lights transformed the great lawn of Magnolia Community Services’ 11-acre main campus on River Road to a sparkling soirée. Centerpieces created in the Dream Factory by Magnolia clients paid homage to the 21 group homes where half of the clients live. Special touches of client art could be found throughout the event. Food was donated from over 30 local restaurants, grocers and caterers. Ashley Hansen of Hansen’s Sno-Bliz created a satsumaginger “Magnolia Mule” cocktail which was mixed with spirits donated by Republic National Distributing Co. The Topcats provided the dancing music and the Pussyfooters performed that evening. Both groups engaged with Magnolia clients, encouraging them to share the stage, dance floor and mic. Auction items included original works of art by Magnolia’s Dream Factory client artists, a signed Michael Kors designer handbag, a signed Thomas Morstead 2009 Superbowl jersey, a Zurich Classic package and JPAS and Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra season tickets. Diamonds added to the evening’s sparkle in a Friend & Co. and Ramsey’s Diamond Jewelers raffle. ‡ From King Cake to Crawfish 10 spring restaurant specials By Kelcy Wilburn | Photos by Sara Essex Bradley

Cause for celebration abounds from February though the spring season as New Orleans returns to its lively form.Valentine’s Day and Mardi Gras lead to the Irish and Italian celebrations of St. Patrick’s and St. Joseph’s days, as well as Easter, Mother’s Day and a tidal wave of graduations and weddings that make it difficult to find a quiet weekend. Food is the centerpiece of every celebration, and in New Orleans the drinks are always flowing. This month, we’ve checked in with 10 local food and drink purveyors to find out what the season will bring.

Arnaud’s Valentine Special

One of New Orleans’ grand dame restaurants, Arnaud’s (813 Bienville St., 524-5433, ArnaudsRestaurant.com) always manages to be at the center of the party from its original French Quarter location at 813 Bienville St. This month, in partnership with Moët, along with Adler’s Jewelers, Arnaud’s plans to make Valentine’s Day super special for a lucky guest with a surprise diamond in their glass of Moët. For more information on the reception-style event, call the restaurant. “Arnaud’s is the hub for all things celebration, offering everything from romantic dining for two in the main dining room perfect for Valentine’s Day to private dining options, including our Bourbon Suites with balconies overlooking Bourbon Street, ideal for Mardi Gras reveling,” says Co-Owner Katie Casbarian.

Arnaud’s menu is replete with seafood dishes, great for those observing the Lenten Season. Casbarian’s favorites include the Pompano Duarte and Pompano David.

Red Gravy’s King Cake French Toast

“The whole idea behind Red Gravy is family recipes and traditions. While I may be a little Italian girl from North Jersey, I’ve won two different red beans and rice throwdowns,” says Roseann, who serves her award-winning red beans and rice and gumbo during the two weeks leading up to Mardi Gras. Guests around St. Patrick’s Day can expect her New York-style corned beef and rye, and the Easter season will bring secret-recipe Italian breads and pies.

Lunch and brunch are big in the CBD this season over at Red Gravy (125 Camp St., 561-8844, RedGravyCafe.com), which was recently named by New Orleans Magazine readers their favorite Brunch Restaurant in New Orleans. The restaurant also ranked notably as the second-place Italian Restaurant. Through Mardi Gras, Owner Roseann Melisi Rostoker is featuring King Cake French Toast. On Nyx parade day (February 22), the restaurant will host a Nyx-themed brunch with a raffle drawing for a handmade purse and assorted Nyx throws. Roseann loves celebrating traditions, and you’ll always find seasonal specials on her menu.

Bayona’s Chef Eason Barksdale

Bayona (430 Rue Dauphine, 525-4455, Bayona.com) recently made a change in the kitchen. “This past fall Bayona was thrilled to welcome back Eason Barksdale as Chef de Cuisine, and Bayona’s guests and regular patrons have experienced him flourishing in our kitchen since,” says Proprietor Regina Keever. Barksdale most recently helmed the kitchen at Susan Spicer’s Lakeview restaurant, Mondo. “There’s no better way to enjoy a French Quarter afternoon during Carnival season than with a glass of bubbly in hand, enjoying our secluded, tropical courtyard,” says Keever.

This month, Bayona continues its Ooh La La lunch special, which adds a bit of bubbly flare to the mid-day meal. A three-course meal with complimentary champagne, the Ooh La La lunch features some of Bayona’s signature dishes, such as the roasted Cream of Garlic soup, balsamic Bayona salad with shaved Parmesan and Smoked Duck “PB&J” with cashew butter and pepper jelly.

Another of New Orleans’ grand dames, Brennan’s Restaurant (417 Royal St., 525-9711, BrennansNewOrleans.com) is excited to partner with New York’s legendary Four Seasons for a rare, collaborative dinner pop-up February 8-11. The two iconic restaurants will team up for dinner service and treat guests to signature favorites from both establishments, which share a similar history and prestige in their respective cities. In addition to signature favorites, the offerings will also include a preview of new dishes planned for the reopening of the Four Seasons later this year.

In May, Brennan’s will honor Mother’s Day with its thirdannual Turtle Parade, a festive celebration of its courtyard mascots: five turtles named after the “mother sauces” of French Cuisine. “All are invited to march along with the Krewe of Turtles as they parade along the streets of the Vieux Carré and return home to the glorious historic residence with an after party including a blessing, champagne sabering and complimentary hors d’oeuvres and confections,” says General Manager Chris Pendleton. The “slowest second-line on earth” assembles on Bienville Street at 11 a.m., Saturday, May 13.

Brennan’s Steak Dianne

Bourbon House’s Chef Erin Cook

For the eighth year in a row, Bourbon House has reinstituted the decadent King Cake Bevvy, a riff on the famous frozen Brandy Milk Punch. According to Wesley Janssen, Marketing Manager, the drink tastes remarkably like a King Cake and is festively garnished with glittering sugar in purple, green and gold. In the kitchen, Bourbon House recently welcomed lauded Executive Chef Eric Cook to its team.

The family of restaurants owned by Dickie Brennan & Co. are currently in Mardi Gras mode, celebrating with a number of a cocktails and confections. All located in the French Quarter, Palace Café (605 Canal St., 523-1661, PalaceCafe.com), Bourbon House (144 Bourbon St., 522-0111, BourbonHouse.com), Dickie Brennan’s Steakhouse (716 Iberville St., 522-2467, DickieBrennansSteakhouse.com) and Tableau (616 St.Peter St.,934-3463, TableauFrenchQuarter.com) are offering King Cake-inspired desserts, which range from eclairs to gateaus.

stcharlesAvenue.com 51

“The atmosphere of the restaurant was designed to feel very cozy and inviting with the intent of creating a space where people would enjoy breaking bread together, sipping wine or cocktails and making memories with friends and family,” says Managing Partner Michael Buchert. To that end, the restaurant is excited to introduce “Nibbles & Sips” from 3-6:30 p.m. on weekdays and all-day on Wined Up Wednesday. All wines by the bottle and on tap are priced half off and the menu’s Tidbits, Grazers, Smallish Plates and Share or Don’t items are also discounted.

Paradegoers, residents and visitors to Uptown looking for a quaint and delicious breakfast, lunch or dinner spot can expect “fine comfort food made from scratch” at Magazine Street’s relatively new Red Dog Diner (3122 Magazine St., 934-3333, RedDogDiner.com). Red Dog Diner’s eclectic menu combines traditional Southern comfortfood flavors with a sophisticated approach. Notable dishes by chef Terri Savoie include the Chicken & Gravy sandwich, the Fried Quail & Waffle and the Crab & Bacon dip. The warm and rustic feel of the restaurant suits its flavors well.

Red Dog Diner’s Quail Waffles

Dick & Jenny’s (4501 Tchoupitoulas St., 894-9880, DickAndJennys.com) presents another option for warm and welcoming Uptown dining. Located near the parade route, Dick & Jenny’s occupies an old Creole cottage with authentic neighborhood charm. Chef Vidak Spaar offers a menu of contemporary Creole cuisine with seasonal, fresh ingredients sourced from Louisiana farmers, fisherman and artisanal producers. In the springtime, guests can look forward to an infusion of blueberries, strawberries and crawfish. In late spring, corn and watermelon usually make an appearance. “Blueberries and strawberries can be utilized in anything from salads and desserts to cocktails – probably all three. Crawfish will also be utilized across the menu, from sauces to risotto to savory cheesecake – we use it as much as possible,” says General Manager Abraham D’Aquin.

From Easter to Mother’s Day and graduation, guests can keep an eye out for special daytime brunches hosted by Dick & Jenny’s, which is usually only open for dinner service. The restaurant also plays host to a variety of private events in spring, from luncheons and rehearsal dinners to full wedding receptions. According to D’Aquin, Dick & Jenny’s prides itself on the undivided attention and family feel they’re able to offer for private events as well as regular restaurant guests.

We’re best friends and we just enjoy being together. It’s a give and a take during the hard times, but the key is to give more than you take. When we started doing business together we each had our own specialty, and I yielded to her and she yielded to me and it’s worked very well.

“

There are a couple of key things to making a marriage work: Devout love, of course, but also respect for each other and allowing each other to pursue our own interests and supporting each other in those interests. Well, and a great sense of humor.

“ ”

The grace of almighty God, prayer and a lot of working together is what has kept us together for 51 years. We do a lot of things together for our faith and what we believe in. We aren’t perfect, but we never stop trying.

Dolores and Ellis Marsalis married December 31 1959

“ ”

You have to start off on the same page. Dolores was very supportive of me being a musician, which in some ways is kinda crazy ... especially in this town. I know that there’s no formula to a good marriage, because formulas dictate a consistency that’s not flexible and marriage has to have a lot of flexibility.

St. Charles Avenue’s Annual

Couture Wedding Guide by Mirella Cameran photos by Cheryl Gerber

Imagine you’re Taylor Swift and you’re getting married. You can just pick up the phone and the most seasoned experts will be at your beck and call to bring your dream wedding to life. Well, being a bride in New Orleans is a bit like that. The city is chock-full of experts who are at the top of their game and easily accessible with a phone call or a visit to their store. In addition, these wunderkids have access to the amazing resources this creative and cultured city offers. This presents a unique opportunity for local and destination brides for a truly couture wedding: one that’s created and made just for them, which fits their idea of their perfect wedding, well perfectly. Sara Ruffin Costello, New York Times writer, author, New Orleans resident and

celebrated party-giver comments: “You could be getting married in Malawi and probably have access to experts online … but this town is unique in that throwing parties is its life force – bridal and otherwise. I could name three creative titans in New Orleans who would make you a wedding for the ages – dress, venue, food and music. Actually, I might just renew my vows.” These titans exist in every category, but let’s start with the invitation. Margaret Jones and Betty Hunley are the two grande dames of stationery in the city. Happily, there’s no month-long waiting list for an appointment. All you have to do is walk into their stores, Scriptura and Betty Hunley Designs (BettyHunley.com) respectively, and you’ll be met with a warm welcome. Both Jones and Hunley will guide a bride through all the nuances of wedding etiquette, as well as personally overseeing the creation of a one-of-a-kind invitation. Betty Hunley explains, “My team and I go to great lengths to create the invitation the bride has been dreaming of. We want her personality to be reflected in her selection.” Scriptura (Scriptura.com) has a letterpress studio filled with antique presses and a team of designers and illustrators in-house to create anything from a new monogram to a perfect illustration. Jones’ couture service includes sourcing custom handmade paper, custom monograms, foil stamps and wax seals, earning her and her store a national reputation for the most creative and beautiful beginnings to many a wedding. When it comes to the dress, think again before booking a trip to New York. New Orleans offers several bridal-wear experts who will find and fit you with your dream dress. Take Town & Country Bridal (TownAndCountryBridal.com) on St. Charles Avenue; the stylists at this intimate salon can steer a bride through dresses from the most prestigious names in bridal wear, including Badgley Mischka and Atelier by Pronovias. Contact one of the friendly staff there and they’ll also invite you to the many trunk shows they hold with designs fresh from the runways. Yvonne LaFleur (YvonneLaFleur.com), a doyenne of fashion and style in the New Orleans, has only one dressing room in the bridal section of her 10,000-square-foot store in the Riverbend area. Her wedding service is based on individuality, and each bride enjoys undivided attention from LaFleur, her team and her seamstresses at each and every fitting. Complimentary couture custom alterations are done in-house, and LaFleur’s extensive knowledge of fabrics is evident in her collections, which she handpicks. All elements of the bridal trousseau, as well as gowns for bridesmaids and the bridal party are also available. Tieler James (TielerJames.com), a “Project Runway” winner and rising women’s wear star from the Crescent City, is still only 16 years old,

but any bride commissioning a dress by him will probably be purchasing a valuable heirloom. Suzanne Perron (SuzannePerron.com) established her reputation for once-in-a-lifetime custom gowns in New York, but now creates in her Uptown couture design studio and is available by appointment. Given that entertaining seems on a par with living and breathing in the Crescent City, it’s no surprise that some of the most elite event planners are based here. Valerie Gernhauser, owner and principal planner and designer of Sapphire Events

Town and Country Bridal

(SapphireEvents.com), creates extraordinary experiences of all shapes and sizes. A Gernhauser-orchestrated wedding held in the Mississippi River Valley for 500 guests will appear in Martha Stewart Weddings in March, and featured a massive installation of 25,000 tulips suspended over the dance floor. Gernhauser is a regular speaker at conferences alongside peers such as celebrity planner Mindy Weiss and Oprah Winfrey’s event designer Colin Cowie. Commenting on why New Orleans provides brides with the opportunity to create a truly tailor-made wedding, Gernhauser says: “New

Orleans provides a wealth of inspiration and a multitude of environments from antebellum mansions to reclaimed industrial spaces to create a remarkable event aesthetic unique to the clientele.” The Riverview Room (RiverviewRoom.com) is one such place. It occupies the entire fourth level of the Jackson Brewery in the heart of the French Quarter and features panoramic views of the Mississippi River and the city through floor-to-ceiling windows and four terraces. Sales and Events Coordinator Mary Quarls says: “The location of the Riverview Room is unmatched.

The space also offers the flexibility to create whatever vision the bride and groom have for their wedding. We’ve had Lucky Dog Stands, Drago’s Oysters, snowballs and live praline and bananas Foster stations to name a few.” Messina’s at the Terminal (MessinasTerminal.com) is just another of many incredible spaces. An art deco masterpiece, it opened in 1934 at The New Orleans Lakefront Airport. Despite damage during Hurricane Katrina, it still boasts seven of the original eight murals by artist Xavier Gonzalez and original friezes created by Enrique R. Alferez. Consisting of The Atrium and The Walnut Room, there’s also an

observation deck for outdoor ceremonies. Longue Vue House and Gardens (LongueVue.com) is a city estate with a classical revival-style mansion and eight acres of beautifully landscaped gardens. A National Historic Landmark property, it provided the most beautiful backdrop for Hillary Hogan, whose wedding there was featured recently in Vogue magazine. Coordinated by event planners and cousins Glenny Beahm and Anna Schaefer of Angle Events (AngleNola.com), the site provided the overgrown garden inspired by the Charles Dickens’ novel, Great Expectations, for which the bride was looking. Another historic site, The Pontchartrain Hotel (ThePontchartrainHotel.com) opened in 1927 and was home to many visits by Sinatra, Truman Capote, Tennessee Williams and a handful of presidents. It recently reopened after a $10 million renovation. Cooper Manning, eldest son of legendary Saints quarterback Archie Manning, and award-winning restaurateur John Besh collaborated in bringing the hotel back to life. New event spaces will be available in 2017 for couples to make memories at this landmark site. New Orleans and its surrounding environs also provide a wealth of nature, flowers and foliage, which the most creative floral minds in the city put to good use. When Lake Bell got married at the Marigny Opera House (MarignyOperaHouse.org), it was Kim Starr Wise (KimStarrWise.com) that she tapped for floral designs. Born and trained in New York, Wise has built a reputation for breathtaking environments with exceptional beauty, and her creations are revered among experts and in the press. Not matter how elaborate the environs of a New Orleans wedding, one of the highlights of the event will be the food. Brides and their families can choose from James Beard Award winners or inspirational newcomers, such as PDR (PDRNola.com), a food speakeasy. Joel Catering and Special Events (Joels.com), owned by local Joel Dondis, is undoubtedly a titan in this area where every bite is perfection, whether it’s a spoon of homemade gumbo or a tasty oyster Rockefeller. Brides can also enjoy the best of both worlds when it comes to their engagement rings and wedding bands, as Brandon Boudreaux of Boudreaux’s Fine Jewelers (BoudreauxsJewelers.com) explains, “We’re big enough to have great buying power to locate the finest diamonds and gems in the world at the best prices, but small enough where clients come in and ask for family members by their first name.” Boudreaux’s Jewelers and others, such as Aucoin Hart (AucoinHart.com), offer bespoke, in-house design services. However, these family-run businesses pride themselves not only on providing their customers with jewelry as

stunning as anything available anywhere else, but also with customer service that takes care of their customers and their jewelry on a long-term basis. Hope Goldman Meyer (HGMJewelry.com) is another trusted expert who runs a jewelry salon and consultancy business. With access to the world’s finest diamonds and gemstones, she can help produce custom pieces. As an alternative to creating a new piece, jewelers in New Orleans have access to the finest estate jewelry, sourcing unique antique items, which are coveted by collectors throughout the United States. Despite the depth of resources and expertise locally, it still might be tempting to shop for vendors in New York or Los Angeles, but Susan Zackin of Z Event Co. (ZEventCo.com) has this sage advice, “Sometimes clients feel it’s necessary to bring in professionals from other places and that the talent is not readily available locally. In some instances there are times when that could be true, but in most cases it isn’t, and with a realistic budget it can be done by local planners. We mostly all have access to utilize the same sources that out of town planners use.” The city’s clutch of creative types provides brides with multiple options for photographers and videographers. However, a favorite way of capturing the momentous occasion of your

Scriptura

wedding is through live painting. Heirloom Live Event Painting (HeirloomLive.com) provides talented artists to paint during your event, creating entertainment during the party and an heirloom to keep thereafter. For a truly couture wedding – created from scratch, just for you – brides can do no better than what New Orleans offers. This guide has only scratched the surface of the limitless

potential and the people available to brides and their families. There are no long waits to make an appointment that is finally held with an “expert” you never meet in person. New Orleans offers accessible, affordable, astonishing experts who are friendly and trustworthy. Whether your style is a crawfish boil or a masked ball, there’s arguably no better place to turn your dreams into reality.

Chastine MacGregor Hardy to Warren Kearny Watters Saturday, January 27, 1951 By Bev Church

Chastine “Tatine” Hardy of Cincinnati met Warren Watters of New Orleans on a blind date, and she knew from the minute she met him that she was going to marry him! Her mother attended Newcomb and studied art under Ellsworth Woodward and loved New Orleans, but Tatine had never met anyone from New Orleans until that date. Tatine was supposed to be a bridesmaid in her good friend’s wedding, but she got the mumps and wasn’t allowed to be in the wedding. She was in tears, but soon another good friend who lived in Chicago called and said, “Keep your suitcase packed and come to Chicago to go on a blind date with me and another friend.” The blind date, Warren Watters, was a Deke at MIT and was the most handsome man she had ever

88 st. charles Avenue february 2017

met. They went out every night and visited each other every chance they got. The Korean War was raging and Warren, an officer in the Navy, asked Tatine to marry him when he finished his tour of duty two years later, because he was afraid something might happen to him. Tatine explained that she wanted to get married now or she would just marry someone else; that was all it took! On Saturday, January 27, 1951, they were married at 4:30 p.m. at The Church of the Advent with a reception for 450 friends and family at The Queen City Club. Her mother planned the wedding in six weeks and friends in Cincinnati had nonstop parties. There were 10 bridesmaids (Tatine wanted 12 but her mother insisted) and 10 groomsmen. Tatine’s

dress was exquisite, but the handmade veil of Pointe applique lace was the show stopper! It was created for her great-grandmother and won first prize at the 1870 Paris Exposition. It had been worn by every bride in the Hardy family since the 1800s. The veil cascaded down from a coiffure wreath of miniature pink rosebuds. The color scheme of pink and coral was carried out in extraordinarily beautiful bouquets throughout the church and reception. After the reception, Tatine changed into her going away outfit and Warren whisked her away to Nassau for their honeymoon. Warren and Tatine have been married for 66 years, have three beautiful daughters and are still madly in love with each other! n

McHenry – Arant By Mirella Cameran

We are so used to tumultuous stories that we can forget that true love can also be clear and simple. After Marion Emerson McHenry graduated from Southern Methodist University, she was enjoying life in Dallas, Texas. When Aaron Russell Arant walked up to her, called her by name and asked her how she was doing, she was surprised and instantly impressed. Marion and Aaron shared a mutual friend and Aaron had done his homework, having found out the name of the girl who had caught his eye. Fast forward two years later and Marion was standing in baggage claim in Louis Armstrong Airport, having returned home for Christmas. Marion and Aaron were still living in Texas and Marion believed Aaron was back in Dallas, so she was surprised again when she felt a tap on her shoulder and saw him standing there. That same evening, Aaron took Marion to Southern Oaks Plantation and asked her to marry him. Marion had always dreamed of a destination wedding and just assumed that she wouldn’t be able to find that place in her hometown of New Orleans. It was her father who drove her to Longue Vue House and Gardens, and Marion instantly fell in love with the place. Having planted the seed, Marion’s father Lewis McHenry had to work really hard to secure the last day (there were only two) in 2016 that Longue Vue was available for a wedding. That day was Saturday, November 12, 2016, when Marion and Aaron were married by Aaron’s grandfather, Robert Barks. The wedding party had already enjoyed a wonderful rehearsal dinner the night before at Ralph’s on the Park, and Ralph’s also catered the sumptuous wedding feast that followed. Stations included charcuterie from St. James Cheese Company and an oyster bar with chefs preparing oysters raw, fried and charred. 90 st. charles Avenue february 2017

Specialty cocktails were served, including the French 75 for Marion and the Old Fashioned for Aaron. Event organizers Glenny Beahm and Anna Schaefer of Angle Events oversaw the proceedings and Giverny Designs executed the couple’s wish for the décor to appear organic to the historic location. From the flowers to the linens, everything reflected the beautiful style of Longue Vue, Wedding Gown: Christos gown, Neiman Marcus Bridesmaids’ Dresses: Amsale, Town & Country Groom’s and Groomsmen’s Attire: Perlis Bride’s Engagement and Wedding Ring: Motek Diamonds Groom’s Wedding Band: Symmetry Jewelers Invitation: Scriptura Wedding Cake: Flour Power Photographer: Greer Gatusso Videographer: Bride Film Hair: Marcia Gautraux Music: AzIzz

Dancing began with the couple choosing “You Are the Best Thing” by Ray LaMontagne for their first turn as husband and wife. Marion and Aaron honeymooned at Sugar Beach in St. Lucia and returned to live in Dallas, where Marion is an E-Commerce Manager for Corporate Neiman Marcus and Aaron is a Finance and Accounting Recruitment Manager. n

Kim Starr Wise Owner & Chief Designer, Kim Starr Wise Floral Events By Mirella Cameran

How did you start your business? After working in the local wedding industry, I saw a need for a fresh approach and a new aesthetic. What makes you different? All of my clients receive 100 percent of my attention as I hone in on their style and bring it to life. Our arrangements are always unique. Can you share with us some of your favorite events since you started? One was a wedding based on the HBO series “True Detective,” which was filmed locally. We used antlers, vines and teepees. Another one was Lake Bell’s wedding; it was very fun mingling with a cast like that!

94 st. charles Avenue february 2017

Is there anything new at KSW? We launched a new website called “A Wise Bride” that caters to clients looking for the KSW aesthetic at a more affordable price point. They choose from a wonderful selection of pre-set packages. What are you excited about for 2017? One thing is a high-end local wedding that took place in March 2016 at the French Quarter Ursuline Convent. It’s going to be featured in Martha Stewart Weddings, out on March 6, 2017, and I’m thrilled! Kim Starr Wise Floral Events 437 Philip St. 315-5607 KimStarrWise.com

Do you ever have any unusual requests? Yes! I have suspended 24 karat dipped white tulips over a dance floor, created an 11-foottall flower plinth encased in Plexiglas and recreated an arch from the Twilight vampire series wedding.

You have just moved into a great new location; what’s your success secret? A fantastic social media presence, my reputation locally and nationally, and too many new props in the showroom!

Mary Quarls Sales and Event Coordinator, The Riverview Room By Mirella Cameran

What’s the history of the Riverview Room? In 1991 the Riverview Room hosted its very first event, a spectacular New Year’s Eve Party. A few weeks ago, we held our 25th New Year’s Eve celebration. Greg Leighton had the vision to renovate the space and open it for private events; Bruce Trascher was the chef. Together they created a thriving business in a unique location.

photo by j effery johnsto n

What kind of events do you hold? Every kind, wedding receptions, corporate cocktail parties and dinners, debutante parties, team building events, Bar and Bat Mitzvahs – you name it, we can host it! What’s the capacity of the space? We can host wedding receptions for up to 400 people or 500 for stand-up cocktail parties, but we can make the venue work for smaller groups, too. What kind of catering do you offer? Everything is prepared fresh on site. Our chef Eric Perkins has a knack for making our clients happy, from wedding receptions to formal seated served dinners.

What makes the Riverview Room special? It’s a combination: the incredible staff, the breathtaking views and the indoor and outdoor capabilities of the space. Is there anything you are excited about now? Yes, I’m working on an event with a group from Australia and I’m always working with local businesses and brides, which is wonderful. Is there anything coming up that you want to tell us about? Yes! Soon we’ll be hosting a French Quarter Business Association luncheon. This will be a great showcase of our new renovation.

In December of 2015, Frank Loria, a local small business owner, had the idea of creating opportunities for Not for Profit organizations to come together for the purpose of “knocking down” the silos between them and creating something that would build greater relationships and collaboration. The positive response he received to this idea from several in the community was all that was needed to bring this vision to life. A month later, ConnectNOLA was birthed.

In April and November of 2016, the vision to bring together NPO leaders was successfully launched with positive and ongoing results as nearly 100 NPO’s participated. Steve Niles, Margaret Ether, Richard Martinez

ConnectNOLA sees within its mission the importance of “Serving the Servers” throughout the GNO area. “We want to encourage these leaders who are sacrificing so much through their service to those in New Orleans who are truly in need. ConnectNOLA accomplishes that without any financial expense to the NPO. All costs are absorbed by businesses and foundations that see the value of such a tool,” said Loria.

Royal Design Rex’s female artisans By Seale Paterson

a King, the art direction of the Rex parade during the first half of the 20th century was led by women. Ceneilla Bower Alexander moved to New Orleans with her husband, Rev. William Alexander, who became the pastor of the Prytania Street Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Alexander was the designer of Rex from 1911-1923, and her costume creations were known for their extravagance and grandeur. Her float designs were so involved and detailed that, as a result, they were often not able to be executed by the sculptor or decorator. Louis Andrews Fischer, named for her father, was a resident of the Pontalba Apartments in the French Quarter and was an active part of the growing literary and artistic lifestyle embraced there during the 112 st. charles Avenue february 2017

1920s. She first worked on costumes for Rex in 1919 as a Newcomb College art student, and then took over full design duties after Mrs. Alexander’s departure. She was witty and flamboyant, and these traits were reflected in her designs, which celebrated the mischief and comedy of Carnival and included elements of art deco, the Arts and Crafts Movement and more. Her last design – for the 1931 parade, “The Story of the Drama” – was the first parade to address theater, another of her great passions. Leda Hincks Plauche, a New Orleans native from a large, wealthy Creole family, also attended Newcomb. Her family was very involved in Carnival; her husband was Captain of the Atlanteans for 40 years and her daughter served as royalty on multiple krewes. While she designed during the 1930s

and 1940s, her glamorous and vividly colorful designs didn’t reflect the times of economic hardship – and she was widely celebrated. Yet another Newcomb College student, Alice Peak Reiss, took over Rex design from 1954-1968, creating detailed living works of art in bold colors and a whimsical, dreamy design style. Her first parade was taken on late in the season, as the other designer had taken ill; in just 4 weeks, she researched and designed an entire parade on the theme “George Washington.” n

The King of Rex is greeted by Mayor Chep Morrison on Mardi Gras Day 1953. The golden canopy and crown design of the Rex King float was designed by Leda Plauche in the mid-1930s. It is still used today.
