Thanks so much to our cover models: Event Chairs Krystal HardyAllen, Norman Barnum and Jeanette Weiland; Graham Ralston representing presenting sponsor Regions Bank; and Executive Director Elise Gallinot Goldman! This fabulous fundraiser will be on March 10, which gives you plenty of time to become a sponsor for this important creative schools program that takes place in over 14 New Orleans Public Schools! KID smART engages children in hands-on arts-integrated learning to ensure that all students have access to a holistic and arts-rich education. The photo on the cover was taken at one of their partner schools, Edward Hynes Charter School in Lakeview. “Cocktails for KID smart”

will be held in the Shops at the Contemporary Arts Center complete with live music, hors d'oeuvres and cocktails! Sponsors and patrons will receive limited edition giclées by Featured Artist Ron Bechet and Featured Emerging Artist Brent Houzenga. To purchase your ticket call 504-940-1994 or visit EventBrite.com/cocktails-forkid-smart-tickets-156009038233. Now that it’s January, our thoughts turn to getting fit and turning over a new leaf! Turn to our "Raising the Bar on Fitness" for a glimpse into the offerings of the New Orleans wellness scene. From infrared-heated workouts to plunge baths and oxygen therapies, there's so much to learn! What’s Hot features beauty products to make your new year better from your scalp to your soles. Our editorial team worked

hard on our “Registry of Charitable Events: JanuaryApril 2022”, but it’s only as good as your input! You don’t want to compete with another fundraiser on the same night, so if you don’t see your event listed, email Morgan (Morgan@MyNewOrleans.com) and fill out our online form today (MyNewOrleans.com/ submit-a-charitable-event)! Last month we featured Walker Beery’s nonprofit Kids Join the Fight, and we’ve heard from some of you on how you’re raising money for this important cause. Even though this brave little boy has passed away, his family and support are continuing the fight. Isabel Schmidt told us that her daughter, Ellie Schmidt, realized that she could get teens to join the fight by donating their babysitting funds to KJTF. She did it on her own in September 2021

and then got teens from all over New Orleans to babysit and raise funds for pediatric cancer research and families currently in cancer care. They raised about $2,600 in one weekend! Congratulations to Ellie and all of her friends! Good luck on your New Year›s Resolutions! Beverly Reese Church

Join Prospect.5 at StudioBE, the famed creative hub of Brandon “Bmike” Odums, to celebrate the closing of “Prospect.5: Yesterday we said tomorrow.” The P.5 gala is the sole fundraising event during the three-year exhibition cycle. The evening will honor individuals and groups who have made important contributions to New Orleans’ contemporary art community and to Prospect, and will include an incredible live performance by five-time Grammy nominated trumpeter and composer Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah, pictured here, and food from the city’s top chefs. Let te r f ro m t h e Ed i to r

A Note from Morgan Holiday Happenings For most people the holidays have past, but in New Orleans we’re just warming up. With Twelfth Night here and Carnival approaching, our holiday season is just getting started. Whether or not we have the parades New Orleans Mardi Gras is known for, Carnival cannot and will not be canceled, especially this year. (If you have any doubt of this, just ask our own expert and historian Errol Laborde.) The new year always brings thoughts of rebirth and fresh starts, and this year is no exception. Wellness has become a buzz word encompassing anything that might improve our lives, but it has also become a pressure. We’re told that to be happy we must be certain we’re balancing every part of our bodies, minds, spirits, calendars, family, friends, work, home, etc. Frankly, trying to achieve this balance is exhausting! So I say forget it. This new year I’m embracing the madness. I’m choosing to see the Lucky Charms on the floor of my car as a reminder of the road trip we took last month and not as a sign that I really need to vacuum. To look at a canceled lunch with a friend as an opportunity to call my mother and rest my body. To hug the little moments close and let the bigger picture go hazy a bit (remember those Magic Eye posters?). As Carnival takes over more and more of our time in the coming months, my plan is to schedule in some wellness (the sound baths and Lymphatic Foam Rolling Class + Infrared Sauna I learned about from our fitness feature this month sound quite tempting) but not become overwhelmed by an attempt at balance. If I want to eat fried chicken and King Cake, I’m going to do it, and not because I’m going to promise to only eat quinoa and celery after. I’m going to dance to marching bands and cheer the dance troupes until I lose my voice. And if parades are canceled again, I’m going to cue up some Wild Tchoupitoulas and throw beads to my kid from the couch. And I’m going to nap without guilt; napping, it’s not just for babies anymore!

This month includes our Registry of Charitable Events: JanuaryApril 2022. Recently if was brought to my attention once more (this happens every couple years) that it's a very long piece and not horribly interesting to read or look at. And I get it. But doing our best (there are many of us that work on these pieces) to make certain that every nonprofit event gets its fair share of space to entice you to buy a ticket, go to their event and support their nonprofit is of exceeding importance to me, and to Avenue. So I'm asking you: How should we improve the Registry? Should we keep it as is but add some photos from years past or images from upcoming invitations? Should we just list the basics and put the event descriptions online? I'd love to read your ideas and work on implementing them before the next Registry: May-August. Please email your thoughts to Morgan@MyNewOrleans.com. If you're driving down St. Charles Avenue and you get distracted about 2125, I wouldn't blame you. Christian Shane Properties, now the "only luxury real estate brokerage on the Avenue" has recently redone the Grand Victorian mansion, made it their headquarters and has even made the ballroom available for special events. Learn more at ChristianShane.com. From beauty products to make you glow to workouts to make you sweat and all the nonprofit events you can handle, this issue has everything you need to decide what wellness looks like to you. Happy New Year and Happy Carnival Season! Morgan Packard Griffith

ShopTalk Blog

I believe you can start fresh any time you want. If you aspire to start a new hobby, change your eating habits or even end a bad relationship, there’s nothing stopping you but an imaginary barricade of your own design. That said, you must be ready to want more for yourself. I missed countless opportunities over the years for fear of not meeting my own expectations. Instead, I chose to float slowly out to “Comfort Island” and wash ashore on the beach of “Nothing Ever Changes.” It’s warm and sunny there all year round. No surprises. No challenges. I don’t know if it’s growing older, growing wiser or simply experiencing the isolation of the pandemic, but I finally feel like it’s time to set sail into unchartered waters. It’s a new year and it feels like the time to stay yes to new opportunities. So, I’m saying yes for all the times I’ve said no. Giving myself a chance to expand in every way possible. I’ll fail. I’ll probably feel silly and sometimes afraid, but I’ll have tried! On this month’s Shop Talk blog, I’ll talk to the individuals and businesses who embody change and self-improvement. I’m researching the best ways to expand the mind, body and soul with the help of local practitioners, healers, mixologists and everything in between. Now, let’s just say yes and see what happens next!"

Patricia Brinson Interior Designer By Stephen Maloney

While Brinson said she remains firmly in the classical, antique-loving design camp, she always tries to find ways to surprise her clients and their future visitors. “You have to have an air of excitement in your project, and surprise,” she says. “People love like a splash of a color in a room, where it’s like ‘oh, that’s such a surprise, I never would have thought of that.’”

14 ST. CHARLES AVENUE JANUARY 2022

Patricia Brinson has had a long career as an interior designer, but the secret to her success has more to do with a term usually reserved for the world of journalism: editing. “Editing is one of the biggest things about design,” Brinson says. “You have to know how to pick the right pieces to have the whole look in a room come together.” That process of focusing on what works and casting aside everything else has driven Brinson’s design philosophy for more than four decades. “We can’t have every single thing we love out all the time,” she says. “It just doesn’t work. So editing, to me, is extremely important.” Brinson says she loves to work with colors and comfortable pieces that bring out the best in any given space, from a renovation for a young couple in Old Metairie to a new St. Charles Avenue

condo unit designed by Michael Carbine. The young couple wanted to work in as many colors as possible, which Brinson says pushed her designs in new and interesting directions. “I do like to keep things fresh,” she says. “I love to make things comfortable, and I love to make things pretty at the same time.” For her recent work in Carbine’s new construction, Brinson says she worked with her client to pick out the perfect pieces of furniture to bring life to the condo. Together with the client, Brinson brought over older pieces, refinished others and purchased a few more. The key, she says, was editing. “It’s amazing when you move things from one space to another. Sometimes they don’t work at all, and sometimes they just shine even more in the new space.” ✦

Kendall Winindger, Deborah Peters & Diana Fisher Founders, Spyre By Lindsay Mack

When Diana Fisher faced a cancer diagnosis five years ago, she sought out alternative therapies in addition to Western medicine treatments. But driving all over for mental health, reiki and acupuncture treatments proved inconvenient. So at a fortuitous lunch three years ago, Fisher, along with her sisters Kendall Winindger and Deborah Peters, happened

18 ST. CHARLES AVENUE JANUARY 2022

upon the idea of starting a health collective right in New Orleans. Now Spyre exists to offer a group of health practitioners, meditation spaces, a gym and fitness studio, community gathering areas and a health café all in one gorgeous, peaceful location on Prytania Street. Once greeted in the spacious reception area, guests are welcome to drop in the renovated

Norwegian church (aka “The Nave”) for group yoga classes and community events. Outdoors, the heated saltwater pool is available for lap swimming or water aerobics classes, and a labyrinth in the lawn invites quiet walking meditation. There’s also a dedicated meditation room and gymnasium available, as well as services such as an infrared sauna, hydrotherapy (including a hot and

cold plunge tank) and a dry float bed. In addition, the Well Café is headed up by Chef Amelie, a nutrition consultant who works with local farms to offer fresh, organic meals and snacks. Some of the food is even grown on-site in the Spyre garden. A variety of fitness classes such as core and Pilates workouts are available, as well as group meditation. Prices start at $115 for monthly unlimited access to the pool and gym, and everything is also available a la carte. Discounts for seniors and those with financial need are available as well. In the 15 on-site offices, the many practitioners also support Spyre’s philosophy of treating the body holistically. Currently, the tenants at Spyre offer services such as acupuncture, cupping, light therapies, Ayurvedic practices, CranialSacral massage and integrative physical therapy. Board-certified physiatrists, licensed counselors and licensed social workers are also part of the team, because supporting mental health is another key goal for the organization. As the sisters explain, Spyre provides a place where all bodies and abilities are welcome, and they hope to build a community around this health-based space. With everything in one location, it’s easy for someone to drop by for a therapy visit, then add in some time in the sauna or a spin on the Peloton bike as well. It’s a joyful, relaxing space designed to help support a holistically healthy lifestyle. ✦

Cristiane Maria Rosales Fajardo El Pueblo Nola – Nola Village By Sue Strachan

After Hurricane Katrina, Cristiane Maria Rosales Fajardo jumped into the recovery, connecting anyone affected by the storm, as well as the influx of workers to help in relief efforts, with much-needed services when she was at the Vietnamese American Young Leaders Association (VAYLA). While working at VAYLA, Cristi shared with her supervisor, MK Ngyuen, how much she wanted to see an organization “that focused on the needs of Black and brown community,” she says, as VAYLA focused at that time on the city’s Vietnamese community. While VAYLA has expanded its mission, Cristi was encouraged to start her own and she founded El Pueblo Nola – Nola Village. “We work with various group such as Culture Aid NOLA, Journey for Justice and many different mutual aids group in New Orleans,” Cristi says also noting that the organization was busy during the aftermath of Hurricane Ida helping people as far away as Houma and Lafayette. Giving back to the community is a natural for Cristi. As an 8-year old, she moved from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to New Orleans, first living in Metairie, then in New Orleans East. She soon became her mother’s advocate saying that, “As a child, I was put into adult situations to translate.” El Pueblo Nola is run from her home, with one of her goals to find an office or center to run existing programs and to expand. To find out about the group and its services, visit ElPuebloNola.org

20 ST. CHARLES AVENUE JANUARY 2022

Tell us what your organization does: We serve the Black and Brown communities of New Orleans, with specific programs for the underserved Latinx community, in four key areas: health, education, civic and cultural. Our services include, but are not limited to: free HIV testing, health education, student advocacy, cultural programming, language rights and access, legal resources and know-your-rights training. We work to co-create support systems for our community so that members in need can access essential services and participate in mutual aid networks. We do this by training a core group of local leaders to use the key pillars of the organization by identifying needs, providing services and creating a nurturing environment in which people’s innate strengths can be harnessed for personal and community transformation. Our work aims not only to provide services, but also to honor the dignity and culture of our members, no matter their legal status. What have been the biggest – or most important – accomplishments? I take every daily task as a win. I have so many beautiful memories that if I had to

choose just one it’s hard, so I’m sharing two. First, we received a grant in the amount of $250,000 to directly support 600 families with $400 gift cards during the [COVID-19] pandemic and it was a beautiful moment to be able to help families in need. Another memory was teaching a young garifuna young lady her history in planning for a cultural event. She became so proud to be a dark-skinned garifuna female and said to me, “Mrs. Cristi, This means that I am a Goddess and my skin color isn’t ugly.” And from that day forward she has blossomed into the Goddess she truly is. No grant or material things can make up for that moment. What’s something about your organization that people most likely don’t know? We support many families with burial arrangements for our community members and we have done more than 160 funerals. Is there a person (or mentor) that inspired you? MK Nguyen, my former supervisor [at VAYLA]. She would always say to me how brilliant I was. And how much knowledge I had and

that I needed to be heard. At that time I didn’t understand or know my worth. Is there a movie that changed your life? I love the movie Walkout, based on a true story of the 1968 East LA walkout, also known as the Chicano blowout. This movie showed me the power of true community support in creating a change with direct action. What are you reading now? I haven’t had the pleasure to read anything lately. I’m in a state of life where I could write a couple of best sellers. What is your perfect night out in New Orleans? I would have a full day of pampering myself and not feeling guilty about it. With a horse carriage ride in the French Quarter, dining at Dooky Chase’s Restaurant and watching the sunset at the Lakefront. Secret ambition? My secret ambition is to have a fully funded nonprofit community center that supports youth and families. I would love to have centers here in New Orleans as well as in South America and Central America. ✦

New Orleans Botanical Garden’s “Magic in the Moonlight” This year’s event celebrated 25 years of the New Orleans Botanical Garden Foundation.

➺ By Shelby Simon

An elegant evening of al fresco dining in the Botanical Garden brought patrons together to enjoy fine dining and dancing for an after-hours soiree marking a quarter-century milestone of the New Orleans Botanical Garden Foundation. The décor, described as “simple, yet elegant, tasteful and refined,” mirrored the style of one of the esteemed honorees: Genevieve “Gen” Trimble. Centerpieces of white hydrangeas, lisianthus and freesia, donated thanks to Dunn & Sonnier Antiques, Flowers and Gifts and The Garden Study Club, adorned tables dressed in white. The menu included cocktails, passed hors d’oeuvres of pear, brie and walnut pizzette, oyster shooters and foie mousse served in the Arrival

Garden and Conservatory of the Two Sisters. Chef Chris Anderson of Joel’s Cuisine created a dinner of corn crème moulée, grilled tuna, ginger and citrus served along the Main Axis of the Botanical Garden. Featured entertainment was The Raphael Bas Trio during the cocktail hour and dining. Later, DJ Ann Glaviano: Heatwave got the beat going for the After Party in the Conservatory of the Two Sisters. Several North Carolina escapes proved popular in the auction, as did a Culinary Staycation at The Chloe and a Fish Hawk Dinner in the Outdoor Kitchen of the Botanical Garden. Beauregard-Keyes House’s “Soirée in the Vieux Carré” A garden party gathering reunited friends of the historic French Quarter home.

➺ By Shelby Simon

Supporters of the historic Beauregard-Keyes House were treated to a French Quarter fête with music and mingling in the restored courtyard and garden. For 75 years of stewardship and architectural services, Beauregard-Keyes House extends a special thanks to Koch & Wilson Architects under the direction of Samuel Wilson Jr., FAIA, from 19451993, and Robert J. Cangelosi Jr., AIA, since 1994, for careful supervision of the façade and dependency restorations. The evening began with the Last Straws welcoming guests on the front gallery. Guests were treated to a lovely Sunday supper feast provided

by Palate New Orleans and enjoyed dancing to Bon Bon Vivant in the historic and newly restored courtyard, made possible through grants from the New Orleans Town Gardeners. The parterre garden has been maintained for decades through grants and support provided by the Garden Study Club of New Orleans. Both spaces are maintained by NOLA+Design. Vice President of the Board Larry Schmidt provided the lush decor, including greenery foraged from the property and from friends. Chairs of the event were Board Member Hal Williamson and Dale LeBlanc, both French Quarter residents.✦

Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Louisiana’s “Excelencia Gala” A meaningful celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month and leaders supporting the resilient Louisiana community.

➺ By Shelby Simon

The Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Louisiana celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month and the amazing contributions of exceptional leaders with the “Excelencia Gala.” Originally planned with a September date to celebrate the September Independence Day of nine Latin American countries, Hurricane Ida forced the HCCL to postpone the gala until October 15. In light of this, HCCL’s focus shifted to supporting our communities, first responders and authorities in all recovery efforts to ensure people have access to the information and resources they need in their native language.

Excelencia Awards and honors were given to: Shell, Excelencia Award for Corporate Partner; Hispanic Apostolates of New Orleans and Baton Rouge, Excelencia Award for Community Leader; Hancock Whitney Bank, Excelencia Award for President’s Choice; Brewster Procurement Group, Excelencia Award for Small Business; and Cathy Alfonso, Port of New Orleans, Excelencia Award for Young Leader. Julio y Cesar y Su Banda entertained patrons at the Hyatt Regency New Orleans as they enjoyed gourmet fare by acclaimed Chef Yvan Didelot and an open bar. ✦

f you’re one of the many people considering a health reboot during the new year but you’re feeling uninspired by seasonally discounted gym memberships and promises of a new you using tired, old methods, you may want to dive a little further into the offerings of the New Orleans wellness scene. From infrared-heated workouts to plunge baths and oxygen therapies, a variety of boutique and specialty fitness clubs, spas and studios are changing the ways we think about healing and strengthening our bodies. As new research and technologies evolve, so do the options for maximizing the power of an elevated heart rate or the body’s reaction to sounds and temperatures.

H OT, CO L D & V I B R A N T DROP Sauna Studio opened in New Orleans in 2020, and in less than a year doubled its infrared saunas due to demand. Providing that post-workout euphoria without the workout, these 40-minute sessions in private, 140-degree infrared saunas can reportedly burn up to 600 calories while helping the body detoxify, boost immunity, relieve pain and increase blood flow. According to DROP Owner Amanda Martiny, DROP’s full-spectrum saunas incorporate near-, midand far-infrared energy with penetration of skin tissue, joints and muscles that allows up to seven times more detoxification than typical sweating. “With all that we come in contact within our daily lives, there’s no doubt we’re all in need of consistent, quality detox, and the list of reported health benefits is astounding,” says Martiny.

Customers choose how to spend their private sessions – some relax or meditate while others watch their favorite shows or lift light weights. Sessions end with a frozen, essential oil towelette. New to DROP is a Lymphatic Foam Rolling Class + Infrared Sauna: a combination of 20 minutes of foam rolling and a 30-minute sauna session. On the other end of the spectrum is NOLA Chill, a cryotherapy and wellness studio that offers cold therapies to reduce pain and inflammation and other services aimed at body contouring and anti-aging. “Our whole-body cryotherapy is targeting inflammation throughout the body but also assists in burning calories and giving our clients a metabolism boost,” says Owner Walt Marcus. While whole body cryotherapy is great for athletes and people with injuries, the energy boost,

skin tightening and added collagen production can benefit anyone, he says. NOLA Chill’s CryoSlim service targets fat in the body by using carbon dioxide to freeze and break down fat cells. The CryoFacial applies cold therapy via mask to the face, which is reported to reduce wrinkles, tighten pores and firm the skin. In addition to its cold services, NOLA Chill also offers infrared sauna, HydroMassage, NormaTec compression and NuCalm. Another way to experience the health benefits of cold is through a plunge bath, such as the Hot + Cold Plunge Hydrotherapy treatment at newly opened Spyre Center. Spyre Center’s plunge tanks are set in the back of its courtyard in a discrete annex lit by natural light by day and candles at night. According to Co-Owner and Director Diana Fisher, cold therapy activates the autonomic nervous system and encourages deep, full breathing. Hot + Cold Plunge Hydrotherapy treatments at Spyre are bookable in 15- and 30-minute intervals. “Our hydrotherapy clients report increased focus, elevat-

ed mood, pain relief, increased focus and stress reduction,” says Fisher. “Being in the 55-degree water really forces you to be present and breathe through the external stressor, which can be of great benefit in other stressful areas of life. We’re really excited to provide an exciting way for people to expand their comfort zones and show themselves what they’re capable of.”

In addition to its cold services, NOLA Chill also offers infared sauna (pictured on opposing page) Hydro Massage, NormaTec compression and NuCalm services. One of the newest additions to the New Orleans wellness scene, Spyre Center, pictured above, centralizes a host of healing resources all under one roof.

One of the newest additions to the New Orleans wellness scene, Spyre Center centralizes a host of healing resources all under one roof. Its first-floor Soul Center features therapeutic modalities such as infrared sauna, hydrotherapy and meditation. Upstairs, the Health Collective consists of physical and mental health practitioners. The Zone features a gym, group fitness studio and heated pool, while The Well Café offers up mindfully crafted foods. Founder of Vibrant Market, Lauren Trostorff is focused on increasing vibrancy through clean beauty and wellness. Vibrant Market offers clean beauty products and “biohack” services like its Cold Plunge, Infrared Sauna Sessions, Red Light Therapy, BallancerPro Lymphatic Drainage, and – coming soon – Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy. “The first time I did Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy, I brought my computer in with me to do some work and it was like a light turned on,” says Trostorff. “My brain function was totally switched on, and my inflammation also drastically went down.” Hyperbaric oxygen therapy creates a high pressure, high oxygen environment to increase blood and tissue oxygenation, lower inflammation, increase blood flow and speed healing – it’s a favorite of professional athletes both before and after games.

Vibrant Market, pictured along the top row, offers clean beauty products and biohack servies. Romney offers a diverse array of fitness classes that aim to improve strength, alignment and balance..

According to Trostorff, Vibrant Market’s BallancerPro Lymphatic Drainage machine – the “Rolls Royce of Lymphatic Drainage” – is more effective than manual lymphatic drainage and activates the lymphatic system to push out toxins, increase circulation, reduce cellulite, relieve pain and much more. “Your lymphatic system is what’s responsible flushing toxins and pathogens from your body, so it’s hugely important for detoxification and your immune function. This treatment is perfect before an event or to recover from a workout or an injury,” she says.

Romney

SW E AT I T O U T When it’s time to raise the heart rate and burn calories the oldfashioned way, there are several fitness clubs and studios that shake up the routine, whether with added heat, specially curated playlists or innovative workout methods. Romney offers a diverse array of fitness classes that aim to improve strength, alignment and balance. Owner and Operator Erin Romney has grown the original 1,000-square-foot space to two locations and a booming online streaming program. Today, Romney

44

offers music-fueled cycling, boxing, rebounding cardio, BOSU cardio, Pilates, infrared-heated yoga, Megaformer (Lagree Fitness), PULSE heated cardio + sculpt and now SHRD HIIT (high intensity interval training). According to Romney, her studio is the only licensed facility in Orleans and Jefferson parishes to offer Megaformer (utilizing the Lagree Method), a full-body, highintensity and low-impact program that targets every muscle in the body. Romney’s heated studios used for yoga and PULSE use

infrared to not only sculpt and trim fat but also improve flexibility. When it’s time to relax and be renewed, Romney offers crystal sound baths from trained sound healers. Conducted privately or in groups, these baths allow participants to lie in a comfortable, meditative state while being engulfed in various healing and aligning sound frequencies specific to each chakra. Combining heated workouts with an inclusive, feel-good fitness community, Founder Kelsey

Greenfield opened Body Shoppe in 2019. For people of all levels and abilities, Body Shoppe offers five signature infrared-heated classes, an infrared sauna and a superfood smoothie bar called Shake Shoppe. “Our heated – not hot – classes feel like a big hug the moment you walk into the studio,” says Greenfield. “All of our classes emphasize the importance of listening to your body and making adjustments to make class work for you, which makes it a super welcoming environment for first timers.” Body Shoppe’s 80-to-85-degree classes help muscles warm up quicker and give an extra bump to the heart rate. Greenfield describes Tempo Dance Cardio as a “sweatfest dance party” that spikes both your heart rate and confidence with easy-to-learn choreographed dances and spicy sculpting work. Flex + Flow features mobility work, Pilates, strength training, breath work and mindfulness. Intervals of strength training and cardio feature prominently in Body Shoppe’s HIIT and HIIT + Flow classes. The Hardcore class focuses on the core from the inside out.

“Many of our members describe this class as a moving meditation because it facilitates such a deep connection to the powerhouse of the body through movement and education,” says Greenfield. For some people, a fitness club or studio with a singular focus can be the way to go. With locations in Lakeview and Downtown, Hour Blast opened in 2013 to fill the void of high intensity interval training classes at the time. Hour

Blast classes combine cardio and strength/resistance training using various equipment and intervals. Class sizes are intentionally kept small, and a traditional class includes about 30 minutes of cardio on the treadmill and 30 minutes of strength on the floor. Hour Blast offers a variety of levels to fit clients of all ages and fitness levels with some new strength-based classes and low-intensity classes. While some would-be participants speculate that HIIT is “too hard,”

Eastman contends that Hour Blast classes are only as hard as you want them to be. “You are your only competition in Hour Blast,” she says. With the option to walk, jog or run in every class, classes can accommodate a wide age range. Another studio with a singular focus is Club Pilates, which operates with the belief that Pilates provides the path to a fuller, more satisfying physical existence. “We believe that being in control of your body helps you to be in control of your life,” says Owner and Franchisee Denise LeBrun, who opened the Metairie Road studio in 2017. Benefits of a consistent Pilates practice include increased balance, strength, mobility, and flexibility. Club Pilates offers group classes with Balanced Body equipment and private, one-on-one training from comprehensively trained instructors. “Our classes are all Pilates-based and include contemporary Reformer Flow, CP Control (a barre fusion class), Cardio Sculpt, Suspend – TRX suspension training and our

Center and Balance, which takes stretching to a whole new level,” says LeBrun. Club Pilates offers a free introductory class to anyone new to Pilates to familiarize them with the Reformer, the cues used in class and the know-how to feel comfortable going into a group class. According to LeBrun, members are like family, and the studio sets a high bar for cleanliness. Many of the clubs and studios named are offering low or free introductory rates

and discounted packages for January, so if you’re looking for a new path to a new you, now may be the time to hop on the boutique wellness train and see where it takes you.

Getting the New Year Off to a Clean Start I used to say my annual January health kick was motivated purely by vanity and immaturity – and it still is to a great degree – but these days I also just feel poisoned by January 2, and look forward to my postholiday cleanup as much as the bacchanal that necessitated it. I’ll be relying on these local woman-owned business to help me start the new year afresh. By Jyl Benson

Just Add Sauce

Be it a ho-hum weeknight family meal, a dinner party or a luncheon for friends, chances are you’ll win no fans with grilled chicken, broiled fish or steamed vegetables. But adding a flavorful, exciting sauce will change the game. Lauren Mora had the “aha moment” while cooking a stuck-at-home pandemic meal for her young family in October 2020. She quickly forged a partnership with Ochsner’s Eat Fit NOLA program and built her products around the organization’s principles. The result is four distinct sauces: Green Dream, Full Gusto, Voo Doo and Jazmo, with more flavors on the way. Each eight-ounce package of sauce costs $8 and is available for pickup from Mora’s Lakeview home. She also does local deliveries every Tuesday. She’s currently marketing her rapidly growing business through Instagram and Facebook and encouraging people to sign up for the company’s weekly order email. “My products are getting people excited about dinner,” Mora says. “The sauces are easy to use and don’t feel like a ‘health’ food, just a ridiculously flavor-slammed sauce.” Lively Sauces, LivelySauces. com, @LivelySauces

Celebrating Edna Colton’s 100th Birthday By Bev Church

If anyone has had the honor of knowing the fabulous Edna Douglas Colton, born September 19, 1921, they know that she’s known for her love of fun, family and dancing, and that’s just what her family celebrated on her 100th birthday party! Her four children and their spouses – Ann and Newt Reynolds, Dee and Ernie Eustis, Lynn and Lars Pedersen and Susan and Ed Colton – hosted the party at Ed and Susan’s and they went all out! Tables were decorated throughout the house for the 43 guests, including her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. They served Edna’s favorites: filet, creamed spinach, potato supreme and crabmeat salad. Laura Arrowood Catering created the shrimp and avocado hors d'oeuvres. Of course Edna’s favorite cocktail, bourbon mist, was served while her family cheered her on! Edna is known for her sparkling aqua blue green eyes, so choosing the color scheme for the decorations was easy. Balloons of aqua, silver and blue with a large silver “100” greeted guests as they arrived, and the balloon bouquet was created by Balloon Float NOLA. There was an aqua iced birthday cake created by Maurice Bakery. Aqua napkins by Elle Paperie featured the names that she’s known by, including NaNa, Mother and Edna. Johnny

was the last to leave her own party! Her family also provided the birthday girl with a video of featuring all aspects of her amazing life, including photos of Edna when she was young and photos of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren! Actually there was another 100th birthday cake created by Maurice for Edna’s next birthday celebration at her favorite Orleans Club about a month later. The Orleans Club is celebrating their 95th birthday and Edna her 100th, so friends and members sang “Happy Birthday” to Edna, The Grand Dame, and to the fabled club at the same time. Stall – Falconer By Megan Holt

On a cold night in New York City, Lindsay Lane Stall, her mother and some friends went to their favorite bar, Spotted Pig. As luck would have it, Peter George Falconer, who had recently moved to NYC, was there with a colleague. They all ended up chatting, and Pete mentioned that they were looking for someone to decorate their shop, Thom Sweeney, for Christmas. Lindsay, who was working for designer Daniel Romualdez, offered to take the job. During the week she worked on the shop, Lindsay and Pete began getting to know each other. By the end of the week, Lindsay

50 ST. CHARLES AVENUE JANUARY 2022

invited Pete to a Christmas party at her apartment. He was too nervous to come alone, so they met up after the party. Soon after, they were a couple. Two and a half years later, during the height of the COVID pandemic, Lindsay and Pete were living with her parents in New Orleans. The entire family had just spent the weekend at their house in Kiln, Mississippi. Everyone else had left when Pete and Lindsay walked out to the dock, and Pete proposed in a quiet moment with just the two of them. They called Lindsay’s parents to tell them the news, and somehow by the time they drove home an impromptu engage-

ment party was waiting for them! Like the engagement party, the wedding reception was also at a family home – this time in Lindsay’s grandmother’s backyard in the Garden District, which was transformed into an enchanted garden full of all the things the couple loved. The reception tent was draped in pink and was bursting with flowers and antique designs. Because Pete is from Northern Ireland, many of his family and friends were unable to attend due to the travel ban, so they made sure to add several touches that made Pete feel at home. As they exited their wedding ceremony on October 10, 2021, an Irish band played and then led the celebratory parade to the reception. Part of the reception tent was devoted to Pete’s Pub, which featured walls draped with Irish tweed fabric, photos of Pete’s family and the 1999 Manchester United Champion’s

League Final on TV. Of course, the pub was serving Guinness. In addition to the Irish stout, guests also sipped spicy margaritas and Billecart-Salmon Brut Rosé. These signature drinks were the perfect complement to a menu created by Patti Constantin that included an amazing raw bar, a pasta station and late-night fried rice. The meal was perfect fuel for a fun-filled evening kicked off by the couple’s first dance to “To Love Somebody” by the Bee Gees. The newlyweds had a great time showing off their moves on a mirrored dance floor accented by disco balls and neon pink lighting. After the celebration, the couple spent five days in Mexico before returning to NYC, where they live on Washington Square Park. Lindsay has her own interior design firm, and Pete is Retail Director for Thom Sweeney. ✦

Token Trouble The Luxury Tax Act of 1936 created problems while trying to create a solution. By Seale Paterson

While the state luxury tax was 2%, New Orleans enacted a city tax as well, so New Orleanians faced a total 4% tax. This city tax was to be a temporary, stopgap motion to bring the city out of debt and balance the budget; 85 years later, the city sales tax still exists and is currently at 5%. Image by Seale Paterson. Luxury Tax Token and 1929 Sanborn Map provided for use by the City Archives & Special Collections at the New Orleans Public Library.

The first Louisiana state sales tax was introduced as the “Luxury Tax Act of 1936.” It levied 2 percent tax on what were deemed luxuries: cakes, candy, cosmetics, clothing that cost over $3, etc. These tax revenues would go toward social services, supporting “the unemployable” of Louisiana. Because of pricing in the 1930s, these taxes would often present as fractions of cents. To ensure consumers would only pay the exact tax amounts, luxury tax tokens were manufactured: very thin aluminum 1-millimeter and brass-washed 5- millimeter

52 ST. CHARLES AVENUE JANUARY 2022

tokens with triangle center cutouts. These tokens could only be used to pay the taxes on goods, not the goods themselves. Before the tokens were even introduced, New Orleans merchants started protesting, claiming it was too complicated and that corner grocers and other small vendors shouldn’t be expected to do that level of calculation and bookkeeping. A housewife suggested reenacting the Boston Tea Party by throwing all the tokens in the Mississippi River. The tokens debuted on October 1, 1936, and instantly became

problematic. Cashiers at cafes and shops were backed up with 40-minute waits for patrons to pay. People were walking out on bills. Waitresses complained of tokens left in lieu of tips. Some businesses were too confused by the tax and just ignored it completely; others applied the tax to everything. And the city immediately ran out of tokens with which to make change. Months later, the tokens were still taxing goods as well as consumers’ patience, but had also worked their way into the cultural fabric of the city. Newcomb College put on a luxury tax-based

drama series called Token Toters Campus Night. Mardi Gras revelers created costumes by tying them onto clothing and masks. A time capsule placed in the cornerstone of the 1938 restoration of the French Market contained a handful of the tokens. Over the following years token shortages, inconsistencies with collection and general disdain continued. On January 1, 1941, the state tax was abolished, and the tokens were no longer needed or used. Merchants and consumers had three months to redeem the 61 million tokens in circulation. ✦

Junior Achievement of Greater New Orleans continues to make it possible for thousands of southeast Louisiana K-12 students to have the JA Experience. Our formula has been simple, yet effective: We equip business and community volunteers with our proven programming and send them into the classroom to join teachers in introducing students to the basics of money, careers, business and entrepreneurship. On behalf of our staff, our board of governors and the young people who benefit from JA’s programs, we invite you to attend the "City Stars Soirée" on February 4 at JA’s BizTown for what will be a fun and exciting night celebrating our outstanding and deserving honorees. We are only as strong as the support we receive from you, and we encourage you to help us empower the next generation of leaders, entrepreneurs and Rising Starts!

It is my distinct privilege to share the news that Junior Achievement of Greater New Orleans (JAGNO) will honor our 18th class of Rising Stars at this year’s “City Stars Soirée” on February 4, 2022. As Chair of this year’s event, I can assure you that the diverse members of our 2021 class exemplify the values, spirit and mission of Junior Achievement. Each year, hundreds of JAGNO volunteers work with more than 20,000 students across Greater New Orleans and southeastern Louisiana to help them achieve three core goals: financial literacy, work readiness and entrepreneurship. While our programs achieve demonstrable success in each of these areas, what I find truly breathtaking is the degree to which the young people in our programs gain something even deeper: a sense of self-worth, of potential and of possibility. Our students learn that big dreams are within reach. I have had the good fortune of getting to know this year’s honorees, personally and professionally. Each of them in their own right is a strong role model for students across the region; together, they will help shape a positive future for New Orleans and beyond. Please join me in congratulating them all.

Rising Stars 2021 On Friday, February 4, 2022, Junior Achievement of Greater New Orleans will honor its 18th class of Rising Stars at the “City Stars Soirée.” Junior Achievement is excited and grateful to have Renaissance Publishing and St. Charles Avenue magazine as our print sponsor. The event will take place at JA BizTown (a kid city) located on the City Park campus of Delgado Community College. We are honored to introduce our amazing and diverse class of 2021 JA Rising Stars in this section of the St. Charles Avenue magazine. They are: Ryan Berger, Executive Principal of The Berger Company; Jason Burns, Former President, QCS Logistics; Katherine Eshleman and Parke McEnery, Partner and President, McEnery Company; Gabrielle Glasgow, Lauren Hernandez, Suzy Kingston and Kendall Connick, Co-Owners, Sprout Pediatrics; Reid Martin, Founder, MidCitizen Entertainment; and Ashwin Vilkhu, Chef and Co-Owner, Saffron NOLA. Junior Achievement empowers young people to own their economic success with its many experiential learning experiences and business lessons. A part of this education is learning about successful role models and what it takes to become one. Recipients are individuals aged 40 and under from the Greater New Orleans area that demonstrate leadership, vision, integrity and innovation. These Rising Stars serve as role models for others in business and in life.

Ryan Berger

Ryan Berger has grown up around real estate investment and development. His father founded The Berger Company in 1972. As a young adult, Ryan joined the family business. The Berger Company has holdings in parking, retail and hotels. Their projects include the Westin New Orleans Canal Place, the Hyatt Regency New Orleans and the Hampton Inn Metairie. A key to success is often location, location, location. “Real estate in unassailable locations tends to best maintain value through tumultuous market conditions,” Berger says. “Throughout New Orleans history, that prime location has centered on the French Quarter Riverfront and CBD, which is where many of our holdings are located.” While The Berger Company is a business, Ryan says he and his father both have a personal stake in matters. “Our family is deeply committed to the future of New Orleans,” Berger says. Berger’s works allow him to get involved with organizations focused on making New Orleans a better place for everyone, like Son of a Saint, WYES and the NOCCA Foundation. “Civic engagement is far and away the most rewarding part of my job,” Berger says.

Parker McEnery and Katherine Eshleman

McEnery Residential launched in 2018 as part of the McEnery Company, a diversified real estate services firm, to offer best-in-class boutique residential real estate services in the New Orleans area. Parker McEnery, Broker and Owner, and Katherine Eshleman, Realtor and Owner, along with their ownership partner, Ansley Marshall, work tirelessly to help their clients achieve their real estate goals. Eshleman says the current market is challenging for buyers because of low housing inventory. When a property goes on the market, it will likely receive multiple competing bids. “A large contributing factor … is the increased motivation of buyers -record low mortgage rates and lifestyle changes resulting from the pandemic have pushed more buyers to purchase property,” Eshleman says. In a challenging market like this one, Eshleman says creative thinking is needed. One such solution is seeking off-market opportunities for McEnery’s buyers. A homeowner may want to sell but may not want to publicly list the property for privacy reasons or may not want a parade of people coming through during an open house. They can approach McEnery and explain the situation, and Eshleman can connect them with an interested buyer. McEnery recently opened a Northshore office, and they soon hope to expand to the Mississippi Gulf Coast, too.

Reid Martin

Pursuing a career in the arts isn’t easy, but Reid Martin at MidCitizen Entertainment works to help local artists create successful, sustainable careers. The idea for MidCitizen Entertainment first came to Martin in 2014, when he watched Sweet Crude play at Gasa Gasa. He knew he wanted to manage them, and now he does! Martin defines his work in this way: “The artist is the owner and the creative force of their business. I’m the CEO that they’ve hired to run it. All functions of an artist’s career – booking, publicity, distributions, radio, legal, accounting, logistics – report to me and I report to the artist.” For Martin, it isn’t just about profitability. He wants to help artists who stand for something bigger than that. For example, he represents Big Freedia, who represents the bounce music culture of New Orleans to the rest of the world. Sweet Crude is part of a movement to return Louisiana French to art. He wants to use the success of his artists to help create more music industry jobs in New Orleans. “We don’t want to represent artists who sound like a million other artists,” Martin says. “We want to work with artists that own their own lane.”

Jason Burns

Jason Burns’ parents started QCS Logistics in 1984. It began as a payroll service, but quickly transformed into a courier and delivery service. In 2008, Burns joined the family business. “We become what we see in life, and I was fortunate to see both my mother and father navigate the highs and lows of entrepreneurship,” Burns says. “I want to thank my parents for taking a leap of faith more than 36 years ago to become entrepreneurs.” Burns said the pillars of his business are integrity, problem solving, accountability and going above and beyond for customers. “It (the pillars) separates us because in this business, you are only as good as your last delivery, and these values guide how we communicate with our internal and external customers,” Burns says. The problem solving is Burns’ favorite part of the job. He said customers often QCS when they’ve had a problem elsewhere. It’s QCS’ job to step in, find a solution and “stop the bleeding.” The COVID-19 pandemic has created a demanding but exciting time for the transportation and logistics industry. Burns says delivery volume has spiked, making shippers realize how critical “final mile” delivery services like those QCS provides are to the supply chain.

Sprout Pediatrics

Sprout Pediatrics is the brainchild of Dr. Gabrielle Glasgow, Dr. Suzy Kingston, Dr. Lauren Hernandez and Kendall Connick, NP. The four women worked together for over seven years before opening their practice in Metairie in winter 2019. Their dream was to emphasize wellness in pediatrics. To achieve this goal, Sprout offers CPR certification classes, talks with adolescents about what to expect during puberty and offers drive-thru flu clinics, group therapy classes and yoga sessions. New parents are invited to monthly meet-and-greets to ask questions and meet the doctors. Parents place a great deal of trust in pediatricians, and that trust is something the team at Sprout Pediatrics is grateful for and doesn’t take for granted. “The most rewarding aspect of our job is the ability to connect with members of our community both in the clinic and beyond,” says Dr. Hernandez. “We’re blessed to be chosen as a small part of each family and watch them (children) grow.” Dr. Hernandez adds that initial reaction to Sprout Pediatrics has been overwhelmingly positive. “It has been a privilege to be accepted and embraced in the community, and we look forward to continued growth and meeting new families in the years to come,” says Dr. Hernandez.

Ashwin Vilkhu

New Orleans is a fusion of cultures, as is New Orleans cuisine. At Saffron on Magazine Street, Ashwin Vilkhu and his family have merged Indian cooking with New Orleans tradition and ingredients. Ashwin is Chef, General Manager and Beverage Director for Saffron. His sister, Pranita, is Director of Human Resources and Finance. His father, Arvinder, is President and Executive Chef. His mother, Pardeep, is Vice President and Director of Operations. The Vilkhu family journeyed from India to New Orleans in 1984. They quickly fell in love with their new home, but they felt Indian cuisine was underrepresented in the local food scene. In August 2017, they opened Saffron. Ashwin said his parents instilled a love for food, beverages and hospitality in him at a young age. “My parents used to entertain a great deal,” Ashwin says. “It was a humble home, but I experienced firsthand at an early age how to create an experience.” Indian-Creole dishes, such as curried seafood gumbo, came to the Vilkhus organically. Living here made them want to mix the cuisine of their old homeland with their new homeland. “New Orleans just finds its way into your heart and influences you,” Ashwin says.

Enter the perfect solution: a set of press on nails from M.A.D. Nails.

Owned by Morgan Dixon (whose work you may know from the New Orleans-filmed TV show “Claws”), M.A.D. Nails offers both ready-made and custom kits. If you haven’t tried press-ons since the set you bought at the drugstore in the 1980s, you’ll be pleasantly surprised by how far the technology has come! All press-on sets come with a personal application kit and instructions; are ready to last one-to-two weeks per use; and can be used more than 10-20 times with proper care. M.A.D. Nails (appointments recommended), 527 St. Joseph St., 631-938-6245, MAD-Nails.com, info@mad-nails.com, @madnails.
