We made it to 2021! This past year was so very hard for so many reasons, but there's a light at the end of the tunnel – unfortunately, it's past Carnival. But there will still be King Cake for King's Day, and though the Phunny Phorty Phellows and the Funky Uptown Krewe won't be partying in the streetcars, the Funky Uptown Krewe has invented a new way to celebrate Twelfth Night – a scavenger hunt along the St. Charles Avenue streetcar line to collect their signature throws: handdecorated bedazzled vinyl records! The krewe is 100 percent volunteer-run and more than 90 percent of every dollar spent by the krewe is spent locally. Their goal is to encourage revelers to responsibly flock to the St. Charles streetcar line on Twelfth Night and provide some small boost to local

businesses. Follow their Instagram account (@funkyuptownkrewe) for hints starting the afternoon of Twelfth Night, January 6! This issue features our Registry of Charitable Events: January-April 2021, which we'll be continuing to update online at SaintCharlesAvenue.com. If you missed the deadline or your nonprofit just finalized its event, visit MyNewOrleans.com/submit-acharitable-event today, and feel free to email me at Morgan@MyNewOrleans.com with any questions or concern. Our New Orleans Opera has undergone some major changes! Since March they have: hired a new General Director – its first woman in the position – Clare Burovac; created an Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Committee; produced three concerts with limited, socially distanced seating; hired a COVID officer; joined the Zoom world with "Cocktails with Clare" and an adult lecture series, Allons; and managed an entire virtual singing competition for regional high school students. In addition, digitally they'll be offering a collaboration with the Louisiana

Philharmonic Orchestra for a concert of operatic favorites, to be presented as a streaming event in January through the LPO’s Orpheum Sessions, as well as a recital filmed at the Women’s Opera Guild Home in the Garden District, featuring internationally acclaimed tenor Bryan Hymel and soprano Irini Kryiakidou, joined by pianist Michael Borowitz, Artistic Director of Opera Louisiane. Live performances will include (locations TBA): Gian Carlo Menotti’s chamber opera, The Medium on March 19 and 20; the Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess in concert on April 30 and May 1; and, following the sold-out success of "Opera on Tap’s Guild Home" concerts in October 2020, they're planning another "Opera on Tap – In Our Yard!" series in April. To learn more and join today, visit NewOrleansOpera.org. Eat some King Cake and enjoy the month – but wash your hands!

House Floats, Apps, Baking & More Though parades may be cancelled, the spirit of Carnival lives on By Brittany Kennedy

At this point we’ve all celebrated various holidays and milestones a bit differently than in years past. Birthdays, Thanksgiving and Christmas have been socially distanced, Zoomed or even cancelled. Carnival, however, is like Christmas in that you cannot cancel it. We will celebrate Carnival this year as we always do – it will just look a little different. For children, these changes and adjustments have been constant and, in some ways, overwhelming. However, there are ways we can keep the Carnival spirit alive in our homes not just by eating King Cake and making shoe-box floats, but by embracing new ideas and creating new traditions. For Megan Boudreaux, a resident of Algiers Point, this type of innovation began by a simple idea of decorating her house to look like a Mardi Gras float in the hopes that her neighbors would do the same. What began as a simple Facebook group has ballooned into a metro-wide initiative to make Mardi Gras on our front porches. The Krewe of House Floats currently has over 7,000 members, and similar “krewes” have popped up all over the metro area. There have been suggestions for common throws for neighborhoods, and while the hope is that it will help artists who would normally be employed making real floats, there’s ample opportunity to involve children – and perhaps their classmates – in the endeavor. Not only will we be walking by

home “floats” in our neighborhood, the Krewe of Bacchus’s decision to hold a “virtual” parade via an app proves there are ways to use technology to bring about the Carnival spirit. Small shoebox parades on Zoom or socially distanced among friends can be easily organized, and even organized posts on Facebook and Instagram can create community among groups. If you want your Mardi Gras floats to be of the edible variety, there’s also the option of creating a gingerbread float, but instead of using gingerbread, you can simply add cinnamon to sugar cookie mix and make it taste closer to King Cake (baking perhaps a bit longer to have a tougher, more structural cookie). Floats can be easily crafted with four rectangles and a base, and then placed on larger marshmallows to look like the wheels. Your local party supply or craft store will have a plethora purple, green and gold (or yellow) candy, and you can easily use any leftover cookie dough to make signature cookie throws – you may want to source cookie cutters in the shape of shoes, sunglasses or coconuts ahead of time. Besides Carnival crafts that are edible, now is also the time to re-visit your parade route food and even invent some new things. One can easily re-create sidewalk or neutral ground festiveness with some Popeye’s and a boom box on the front porch. Meanwhile, this may be the perfect year to

try your hand at making a King Cake from scratch (Gracious Bakery is selling a King Cake kit with almost everything you need) or even trying King-Cake like desserts. For example, brown butter and cinnamon added to rice crispie treats that are then frosted are an easy and kid friendly way to re-invent a Carnival classic. No matter how you decide to celebrate Carnival this year, know that, while it may be a

little different, it will never be something you can cancel because as Al Johnson tells us in his song, “it’s Carnival time, and everybody’s having fun.” ✦

Seeking Comfort, Oh Joy Eschewing virtue in the interest of the public good By Jyl Benson

12 ST. CHARLES AVENUE JANUARY 2021

La Boulangerie

Every January I write about healthful habits that will carry me into the new year and ready me for my childish practice of out jumping teenagers for Mardi Gras beads. I started last year off as a teetotaling vegan in anticipation of the string of parades that roll just steps from my door. On the first night of parades an off-duty police officer started banging on our front door before Andrew and I could make it out to the route. He informed us that someone had been attempting to cut through the parade line at the end of our block in an SUV. “I told her to turn around and leave,” he said. “Instead she backed down the street … she’s over there.” As she careened down the block in a Hummer H3 the driver nicked one car, dented another, really nailed my car, hit Andrew’s truck and swiped a minivan before the officer stopped her. I went over to talk to her. She appeared to be in her late 70s and was a dead ringer for Chrissie Hyde of The Pretenders, but with none of the swagger. She was scared, confused. I gave her a hug. She clutched at me as though for dear life until her husband arrived. He was Elvis Costello’s Doppelganger.

Perhaps this strange encounter was a harbinger of things to come? The following days brought the death of a woman after being hit by a float on Wednesday and the death of a man after being hit by a float on Saturday. Two people fell from a second-story balcony on the Uptown parade route on Sunday evening. Earlier that day two riders fell from floats in separate incidents along the same route. I took myself out of the game after I tripped on some beads and face planted in the street resulting in a mild concussion, two black eyes and no desire to investigate what else the season might bring. Two weeks later the ’Rona came to call on New Orleans. As a preventative measure I’m starting this year off seeking comfort and, by extension, joy. Here are a few of my favorite things, none of them healthy, none of them vegan, all of them delicious and worthy of indulgence. 1. Pork Tonkotsu ramen from kin. Kin is on my regular “route” around town and a tug of longing hits every time I’ve passed the sweet little restaurant that has sported boards over the door and windows since ever since this effing pandemic took hold last March and shattered our lives and livelihoods. Kin has been hosting pop-ups around town, and their limited menu usually includes a pork Tonkotsu ramen kit to be prepared at home. The kit includes housemade ramen noodles, braised pork belly, confit ground

➺ Try This:

It is always “island time” at The Rum House. The popular Caribbean taco joint recently reopened after a renovation and introduced a new brunch menu with an emphasis on day drinking.

pork shoulder, a marinated soft egg, scallions and caramelized onions. They will reopen soon on Washington Avenue, no firm date yet. 2. Crab Croquettes with green onion remoulade; Lobster Daddy (fried lobster tail on a biscuit with Cajun gravy) and crispy potatoes. This goodness comes from Bearcat Café. 3. My daughter and I recently sat in the sunshine outside of La Boulangerie and shared a Croque Monsieur and Le Parisienne (Butcher ham, butter, Comté and cornichons on baguette). We sighed with joy and contentment and could’ve melted into the sidewalk. We would’ve scarfed down some King Cake, but that doesn’t arrive until January 6. 4. Pretty much anything from Juan’s Flying Burrito. Right now I’m digging the Luau quesadilla (grilled shrimp, bacon, pineapple salsa and Cheddar-Jack) and the Bacon Azul quesadilla (beef, bacon, blue cheese, Cheddar-Jack, roasted mushrooms, grilled onions and salsa, served with a side of chipotle ranch). Whatever your choice at Juan’s when eschewing virtue, it’s always a good idea to wash it all down with a Margarita the size of your head. ✦

Le Petit Théâtre’s “Curtain Call Ball”

1

Filled with song and guest appearances, Le Petit’s biggest annual fundraiser supports access to the arts. By Shelby Simon

The “Curtain Call Ball” is Le Petit Théâtre’s biggest fundraiser of the year, and the $150,000 raised at this year’s virtual gala will support the theater’s main stage season, live digital content and education program. A video of Bryan Batt and Tom Cianfichi set the tone for the evening. This was followed by a welcome video by Co-Chairs Joey Brown and Dana Hansel in which they did a bit of acting themselves. Board of Governors Chairperson Kathleen Van Horn followed with a welcome video from her home. During their remarks, Executive Director Don-Scott Cooper and Artistic Director Maxwell Williams revealed Le Petit’s brand-new mobile stage. Donors at the Backstage Level and up were provided wine, champagne and snacks from Martin Wine Cellar. Pianist Tom Hook and his band opened the show with a rousing rendition of “Down in New Orleans,” and Batt sang an emotional version of “Infinite Joy” from the musical of the same name. Patrons agreed that the highlight of the evening was the performance of “A Million Dreams” from The Greatest Showman by students from Le Petit’s Young Conservatory acting program. Staff collaborated with the students to film them both at home via Zoom and by themselves on stage, then edited the footage together to make it look as though the students were all performing on stage at once. A variety of actors (including Keith Claverie, Leslie Claverie, Ricky Graham, Taylor James, Rachel Looney, Meredith Owens, Adam Seagrave and Tomeka Williams) closed the show with a medley of songs that have been in musicals performed on Le Petit's stage, accompanied by Jefferson Turner on piano. The live auction saw spirited bidding for two items: a pair of art deco earrings from Friend & Company, and an original artwork by Tim Trapolin created exclusively for the Ball and donated by the artist in honor of Joey Brown and Dana Hansel: “Thunderhead, Avery Island Road.” Mark Romig served as Emcee and Main Stage presenting sponsors were Friend & Company and The New Orleans Advocate | Times-Picayune | NOLA.com. ✦

Fans of WWOZ donned their favorite festival attire in a virtual, worldwide gathering to celebrate WWOZ’s 40 years of broadcasting and Guarding the Groove. Sylvain Society’s “Summer Seersucker Soirée” Approximately 40 patrons donned their best seersucker for socializing and cocktail mixing at this virtual annual event. By Shelby Simon

The Sylvain Society kicked off the 2020-2021 Opera Season with their annual “Summer Seersucker Soirée.” The virtual event was held on Saturday, August 22, via Sylvain Society’s Facebook live, streaming from Roulaison Distilling Co. in Mid-City, which also sponsored the fête. The affair provided an entertaining virtual mixer for Sylvain members and friends, allowing patrons the opportunity to dress up in seersucker, socialize, learn how to make and mix drinks using rum from the Roulaison Distilling Co. and participate in a best dressed competition. Gabriel Virdure served as the Seersucker Judge, awarding Kat Gilbreath the Best Dressed award. Dylan Tran won Rum Trivia, and the two winners were each given a bottle of Roulaison Cacao Rum. Maria Thomas, winner of the Opera trivia, won a Porgy & Bess mask from the New Orleans Opera Association. Participants also learned how to make a cocktail named The Destin, which includes two ounces of Roulaison Cacao Rum, half an ounce of El Guapo Strawberry Syrup, half an ounce of lime juice and an ounce and a half of coconut water shaken with ice, poured and served with a lime garnish. Andrew Lohfeld, Co-Founder of Roulaison Distilling Co., gave a tour of the distillery. Clara Grace Conatser St. Martin’s Episcopal School By Mallory Lindsly

“Realizing that there are people my age who would give their right hand for a life like mine has made me so grateful for all of my blessings. It is so easy to get caught up in the petty annoyances of everyday life that you forget to be grateful,” says Clara Grace Conatser, a senior at St. Martin’s Episcopal School. Conatser is involved in many clubs and organizations at St Martin’s and in her community. She is the Founder and President of St Martin’s Cloaks and Dresses Club, which provides clothing and other resources for abused kids and teams. “My activism has definitely increased my empathy. Imagining what these kids and teens are going through makes me never want to complain about my circumstances again,” says Conatser.

“I’ve also gained a lot of insight as to how the vicious cycle of abuse starts and is perpetuated.” Cloaks and Dresses is the sister charity to Listen to Kids which helps abused kids and teens in the New Orleans area.Conatser is also in the National Honor Society, the Greater New Orleans Youth Orchestra, where she plays principal horn, captain of the St Martin’s Quiz Bowl, and Co-President of the Admissions Ambassadors Club. One of her favorite volunteering experiences was a delivery bake sale that she did for Listen to Kids. In March 2020, the Cloaks and Dresses Club planned for a bake sale, but a few days before it was scheduled St. Martin’s switched to virtual learning. Conatser realized that just because she

and her classmates switched to virtual learning, the abused kids’ and teenagers’ needs weren’t going away. During the summer, Conatser and her friends baked goods to delivery to people’s houses. Conatser's father created an online order form and engaged in social media to help spread the news about the bake sale to raise money for Listen to Kids. Michelle Scandurro, the founder of Listen to Kids, helped Conatser become a student activist by helping her realize the hardship abused children have to endure. After high school, Conatser’s dream college is Harvard University, where she plans to major in biophysics and become a climate change researcher. She also plans to continue playing the French horn and her activism. ✦

Nicette Louise Gensler Weds Glenn Gill Goodier November 21, 1970 By Bev Church

It was pretty much love at first sight for Glenn Gill Goodier and Nicette Louise Gensler, but it took five-and-a-half years before they were married. Glenn met Nicette at a Jesuit dance when she was a junior in high school. They were both dating other people when Glenn heard that Nicette had broken up with her boyfriend. He asked her best friend, Peggy McCausland, if Nicette would go out with him and the rest is history! Nicette went to Newcomb and Glenn to Loyola and then to Loyola Law School, where he had top honors including Law Review, president of Alpha Sigma Nu national Jesuit honor society and more. They dated on and off and Glenn asked her to marry him on Christmas Eve 1969 at Holy Name’s midnight Mass! Of course, he asked her parents first. Glenn tied the engagement ring to a rose and proposed right before midnight Mass so she could let all of their friends and family know that she said yes! Glenn had just been offered a position at Jones Walker and

42 ST. CHARLES AVENUE JANUARY 2021

Nicette was going to take a job with Delta Airlines right after graduation, so everything was perfect for a November wedding. Nicette’s mom’s friends had the engagement party and the showers, bridesmaid’s luncheon, dinners and cocktail parties followed. Glenn’s mother hosted the rehearsal dinner at Etienne’s Restaurant. They were married at a noon Mass at Holy Name with Nicette’s brother, George, as the officiant. Nicette’s mom planned the decorations in the church and at the reception at the Orleans Club with Rohm’s Florist, and the cake was from Gambino’s. (Her mom was good friends with Mr. Gambino, so the cake was extra special!) Leon Trice took all of the photos. The dresses were from Town & Country. After changing into their going away outfits they were off to St. Thomas for their honeymoon. Glenn and Nicette have just celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. They have four children and five grandchildren. ✦

Throneberry – Roussel By Megan Holt

Each hoping to meet someone special, Sarah Bess Throneberry and Peter Conway Roussel decided to join the dating app Bumble. Because Bumble gives the power to initiate conversations only to women, Sarah made the first move, which eventually led to her inviting Pete to a Shania Twain concert at the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville. The concert turned into the most fun date either had experienced, and both knew that evening was the beginning of a relationship. Almost exactly one year later Pete was planning his proposal. He popped the question during a trip to Cape San Blas, Florida. The couple went for a long walk along the water, and he timed it so that they got back to the boardwalk just as the sun was setting. Pete got down on one knee with an absolutely stunning sunset in the background, and Sarah happily said “yes!”. Their celebration began with a rehearsal dinner at Nashville restaurant Etch, where guests enjoyed classic Southern food. On July 18, 2020, Sarah walked down the aisle of Wightman Chapel, which the couple selected for its beautiful grounds and greenery. Julian Goodpaster pronounced them husband and wife. Knowing their big day would be a whirlwind surrounded by friends and family, Sarah and Pete wrote a letter to one another before the ceremony and exchanged them during their “first look” on their wedding day – a perfect way to have a private moment for just the two of them. Following the wedding

Unbeknownst to many people there, Sarah and Pete had taken dance lessons in preparation for their first dance as a married couple, and they wowed guests with their footwork to “You Are the Best Thing” by Ray LaMontagne, which they chose because it’s an upbeat song with a great message. Following this and many more dances, the magical night drew to a close. Guests took home monogramed personalized matchbooks with the inscription “The Perfect Match” as keepsakes. For their honeymoon trip, Pete and Sarah took a nine-hour road trip back to the place where their life together officially started, Cape San Blas. After a relaxing week at the beach, they returned to Nashville, where Pete is a sports agent representing college and NFL coaches and Sarah is a registered nurse in the Cardiac Cath Lab. ✦

ceremony, the newlyweds and their guests headed to CJ’s Off The Square in Franklin, Tennessee, for a reception full of special touches that truly represented Pete and Sarah. The venue was decked out in pastel watercolor florals with a mix of soft shades ranging from purple to pink to blue. The décor felt like the perfect complement to the specialty cocktail, a “Perfect Pear Martini” made with Pear

Grey Goose and St. Germain. Everyone raved about both the cocktail and the catering from Red Pony, especially the shrimp and grits. Accompanying the meal were two spectacular cakes, and the groom’s cake featured a message from a someone who couldn’t make it to the party. The cake was adorned with a personalized Golden-Retriever cake topper of the couple’s dog, Samson, and read “I do, too.”

Amy Wilson Co-owner, Louisiana Caviar Company By Lani Griffiths purchase our caviar over 30 years ago. We (Amy Wilson, Alden Lagasse and Allison Vega-Knoll) purchased Cajun Caviar in 2016 because we wanted more people to be able to indulge in this affordable luxury. We all have a passion for fine foods, and we thought with a new face, some marketing and a little work we could reintroduce Cajun Caviar to not only New Orleans but the greater South and beyond.

What is Cajun Caviar? It is a caviar produced from choupique or bowfin roe. What do you do for the company? I run the operations; a little bit of everything since we’re such a small company. How does your product stand out in the market? We have a local seafood delicacy fished from the fresh waters of the Atchafalaya basin. Our caviar is a premium bowfin, arguably the best on the market. The roe is milder than most and the pearls really separate and pop in your mouth. Do you sell anything in addition to Cajun Caviar? We sell our traditional bowfin, spicy bowfin and paddlefish, and starting next week we will be introducing a couple of different flavors of smoked salmon. Tell us a little background on the company. Commander’s Palace was the first restaurant to

Is there anything else you’d like to highlight about Cajun Caviar? Our home base will now be located at Larder, a new market in Metairie co-owned by my husband and Alison. Opened in mid-December, Larder sells all our products and features them on the menu. Last month we won food runner-up for Garden & Gun’s “Made in the South Awards,” which was a huge honor for us. Our caviar can be found at Larder, Martin Wine Cellar, Rouses, Langenstein’s, Whole Foods, Destin Ice and across many menus in the South.

Kathryn Fitzpatrick, Ed.D. Head of School, St. Andrew’s Episcopal School By Lani Griffiths What does your job for St. Andrew’s entail? As Head of School I’m responsible for ensuring the continued academic, financial, operational and spiritual health of the St. Andrew’s community. Every day I’m moved and inspired by what I see, and I marvel at the incredible faculty and staff devotion to utilizing their unique abilities to teach and inspire our children. I believe that the success of our school is built on a foundation of mutual respect and inclusiveness. How has the pandemic impacted the school’s education process? FWe opened the 2020-2021 school year on August 12 for in-person learning as planned and are taking extraordinary measures to keep everyone safe. Since St. Andrew’s has one class per grade, each grade is socially distanced from all of the others. If one person in a grade – teacher or student – tests COVID-positive, then the entire grade will quarantine and learn from home. So far, we haven’t had to quarantine any classes or move to distance-learning.

What's new? St. Andrew’s has recently renovated the play yard at the corner of Short and Zimpel streets thanks to the generosity of our donors, friends and the hard work of our Director of Development Dominique Chauvin. Not only is this play yard a crucial element of our preschool students' experience, it also serves as the “front porch” of St. Andrew’s.

St. Andrew’s Episcopal School, 8012 Oak St., 866-6553, StAndrewsEpiscopalSchool.org

What are some of the core beliefs of St. Andrew’s? St. Andrew’s Episcopal School is the oldest Episcopal school in New Orleans, with 63 years of experience in educating the mind, body and spirit of young children. We enroll boys and girls from 12 months through eighth grade, offering a nurturing yet challenging education that focuses on cherishing childhood, developing character and cultivating leaders. St. Andrew’s is unique not only for its intimate size (we’re especially proud of our student-to-teacher ratio of 5-to-1), but also for creating an educational environment in which every child is known and loved by experienced faculty and staff. At St. Andrew’s we strive to build on each child’s individual strengths, interests and abilities while fostering teamwork within the greater school community.
