Davenport Sr. and his wife at the third annual “Diana Lewis Citizen Participation Awards.” His church (St. John #5 Baptist Church) trains community members on issues of health and violence, and empowers them to reach out to their own high-risk communities. He fights to educate his members about AIDS and non-violence. Pastor Davenport needs our help to make a difference in our city. We are so excited to feature our favorite Saint, Archie Manning, who will be the eighth recipient of the Pat Summerall Award. He will receive this honor at the Legends for Charity® Dinner on Thursday, January 31, at the Hyatt Hotel during the Super Bowl XLVII weekend in New Orleans. This event benefits St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, so we’re thrilled to have Anna James, a local patient treated at St. Jude, on the cover as well! Rich Eisen will be the NFL Network Host, and guest speakers will include the amazing Mary Matalin and James Carville. The dinner will celebrate the life and career of Archie Manning, a legendary sports figure who has helped so many causes during his career, but who’s best known in New Orleans as an honorable and giving man – he’s a role model, an incredible father of three boys, and a great husband to Olivia Manning! How appropriate that all proceeds will support the miracles performed daily at St. Jude. The Summerall Award was created by Cheryl DeLeonardis, President of Ocean 2 Ocean Productions, in 2004 and it has also honored CBS broadcasters James Brown, Greg Gumbel and Jim Nantz; ESPN’s Chris Berman; and NBC’s Cris Collinsworth and Al Michaels. Some of these former honorees will be in attendance at the dinner. There are still tickets available, and of course they want to raise as much as possible for St. Jude, so call (225) 282-3240 or visit LegendsForCharity.com today. We all will want to see Archie Manning honored for all of his accomplishments. Now that the holidays are over, we all want to get into shape for Mardi Gras, so check out our Health, Beauty and Fitness feature by Judi Russell. What’s Hot this month features everything from luxurious spa treatments to the best dry cleaners, all what’s new for the New Year. We also have a special advertising section on Assisted Living. Whether we’re ready to choose a place for ourselves or someone in our family, the information will be invaluable.

Great news: We have two new columns for the New Year that you’ll love! Young Bloods is a column by Lindsey Mack, who will be spotlighting young professionals with new nonprofits in our city. This month, check out Dana Reed of Hope Stone Kids of New Orleans who’s making such a difference! Also, Shop Talk by Mirella Cameran will feature two of New Orleans’ finest retailers chatting about trends and their favorite fashion finds. You don’t want to miss it! Our favorite Town and Country (1514 St. Charles Ave., 523-7027, TownAndCountryBridal.com) is having their annual January Bridal Sale with all bridal gowns at great discounts. I just went in and they have a fabulous selection of Mardi Gras and formal gowns by designers such as Teri Jon, Montage and Jade Couture. They also carry great dresses for the mother of the bride. You have got to see the selection to believe it! I just spoke with George “Keys” Izquierdo and he’s back in New Orleans after playing in Europe, South America, Canada and farther afield. He would be great for your next party or social event – he plays a baby grand piano at home but can bring a keyboard complete with microphone and drums with him. He plays everything from Fats Domino to Frank Sinatra. Check out his website, Zymondo.com, or call 733-0490 – he’s great! Get ready for Mardi Gras and the Super Bowl! We live in a city that celebrates every day and we really know how to do it well. How blessed we are to live in New Orleans! F

cruisin’the crescent So we made it through the holidays, and in New Orleans we all know what that means – it’s time to get ready for Carnival! It is hard to believe that we are one of the few cultures that still upholds the traditions of Twelfth Night. This topic came up while I was at dinner with some British colleagues in London. One of my dining companions commented on the chaos of the holidays and how he was looking forward to January 6 so he and his family could get back to normal. I replied, “January 6th? You mean Twelfth Night?” Suddenly I had a table of Brits staring at me puzzled. They knew exactly what Twelfth Night was, but it had been centuries since it had been celebrated in the UK. This goes for several other countries as well; for most of the modern world the celebrations end on January 6. For New Orleans, the celebrations not only end, but begin again! It is the day we take down

By Shelby Westfeldt

the trees, wreaths and ornaments, and put up the Boeuf Gras, crowns and flambeaux figurines. As we compared our different society’s Twelfth Night festivities, I realized we once had much in common – in fact, many of our traditions sounded to be derived from theirs. Their “Lord of Misrule” held a feast, with a cake that contained a bean. Whoever found the bean ruled the feast. Then several masked men would rush into the streets with bells to drive away the evil spirits. Sound familiar? Now I’m sure back then their hilarity wouldn’t have been put on pause for the Super Bowl, but then again they aren’t New Orleanians. Many of our traditions may have stemmed from other cultures, but we’ve certainly made them unique. Many of these customs have since faded away in other communities, but here in New Orleans we’re definitely going to keep the party going. F

The evening was so nice that they broke down the walls of the tents before the party so that attendees could feel the breeze from the Mississippi River close by. Several local companies were very generous in donating their services for the event. Ralph Brennan Catering and Events, Portobello Catering and Louisiana Pizza Kitchen were among

many restaurants that provided a delectable menu. The Groovy 7 kept the dance floor hopping during both silent and live auctions. With more than 150 auction items up for grabs, there was plenty on which to bid. One of the most coveted was the Mardi Gras Bead Dog Sculpture, which was painted by the Dream Factory Art Studio. The Sculpture was part of the raffle that was sponsored by Haydel’s Bakery of the Paws on Parade public art project. It was a beautiful evening for a great cause to support adults with developmental disabilities.

skin deep

By Cat Wall Aschaffenburg

Stressing Less Stress If you’re like me, it seems like life has been moving way too fast. I seem to be always on a plane and striving for some kind of balance between being a wife, a mother, a clean freak, working and keeping my friends close – life really can become a lot to handle. There is so much to do yet so little time to do it. It is easy to feel anxious – you’re tired and exhausted, yet you have to run because you’re already late for work. Yikes! All of this can be very stressful and, sadly, our skin receives the brunt of this.

Stress can affect your whole body, including your skin, hair and nails. Yep, your emotions have a powerful effect on your skin. Since stress is a part of life, what matters is how you handle it. How Does Stress Affect Skin? Stress causes a chemical response in your body that makes skin more sensitive and reactive. Why? Because the adrenaline rush we’re experiencing almost in a daily manner can also make it harder for skin problems to heal. Have

12 | St. Charles Avenue www.saintcharlesavenue.com

you ever noticed that when you’re stressed, you break out more? This is because stress causes your body to produce cortisol and other hormones, which tells your sebaceous glands to produce more oil. Oily skin is more prone to acne and other skin problems. Stress can also worsen psoriasis, rosacea and eczema. In addition, stress can cause hives and other types of skin rashes, and trigger a flare-up of fever blisters. It can also interfere with daily skin care. If you’re stressed, you might skimp on your skin care, which can aggravate skin problems. Skin problems themselves can also be stressful. I had my first case of the 24-hour hives this week—it completely freaked me out. A big thank you to local board-certified dermatologist Dr. Mary Lupo for patiently holding my hand and viewing photos via text four states away. Anyway, point is some people are so embarrassed by their skin that they keep their issues to themselves or create behavior that adds more stress, which can in fact can worsen the problem. 8 Ways to Reduce the Effects of Stress on Your Skin • Do not neglect your skin. Take care of your skin, even if you’re tired or stressed. • Get regular exercise. It is good for your skin and the rest of your body. • Take time for yourself to do

something you enjoy, such as taking a bath or reading an article from start to finish, even if you only have 10 minutes. • Take a walk around the block. • Practice stress management techniques, such as breathing exercises, yoga, mediation or visual imagery. • Get enough sleep – seven to eight hours each night is ideal. Lack of sleep is a major contributory factor to our stress, and this causes major changes in our skin that are detrimental to our beauty including blotched skin, dull complexion, dried skin, weight gain and noticeable dark circles around the eyes. • Say no. You don’t have to say yes to everything! It is OK to set limits and boundaries to lower your stress. • Talk to someone. Seek support from a friend or a professional therapist or a boardcertified dermatologist. So rather than letting a vicious cycle of stress affect both you and you skin this new year, remember healthy and younger looking skin is also a result of a healthy mindset – just a healthy lifestyle isn’t enough. You need to think positively about things so your body can perform the way it should. Remember, stress will make your skin suffer and your beauty as well. If you don’t get stress under control, it will control you – so be sure that your mind is exactly where it’s supposed to be. Happy New Year! F

A boom boom cocktail with a yucca fritter at Booty’s

Takin’ It To The Streets Street food might not be a concept that you think about in New Orleans, but it’s actually a growing trend in our dining landscape, spanning way beyond Lucky Dog. With street food restaurants opening and more forthcoming, plus the possibility that City Hall will expand the cap and other out-of-date regulations on local trucks – allowing for more competition – it’s possible that 2013 just may be the year of street food. Here is where you can start getting your fill, whether you want

to dine-in or eat on the street. Booty’s Street Food is a brand new addition to the Bywater food scene and is already attracting attention for chef Greg Fonseca’s globally inspired approach to small plates. Here, Fonseca offers dishes the diner eats mostly with their hands, or maybe with a skewer. Papadums, Indian lentil crisps that sort of look like huge Tostito Scoops bend ever so graciously into taco form, engulfing the steaming coconut curried mirliton inside them. It is truly a decadent and exotic hands-on

dish you won’t find anywhere else in town. Doughnuts, lightly dusted with powdered sugar, literally melt in your mouth. There are dishes that call for a fork, such as the shrimp ceviche, oddly topped with salty popcorn that lends whimsy to the dish, and the Yuca Mofongo, a fritter stuffed with pork that’s executed surprisingly well, (sometimes yuca has a cumbersome texture, but here it remains crispy). The Banh Mi is another unexpected delight, with housemade pork belly, meatballs and pâté. The bar is home to amazing cocktails, concocted by tincture wizard Jeremy JF Thompson (formerly of Maurepas Foods) who creates housemade syrups and invests in interesting ingredients that read like a Hong Kong Supermarket grocery list. He also serves up a daily “Amuse Booze” such as his “Cube-O-Libre,” basically fancy little Jello-like shots, which, along with the skeleton unicorn on the wall, really capture a fun dining experience that manages to leave the circus outside. When Anthony Bourdain shot his new show “The Layover” in New Orleans over the summer, he tweeted about this “excellent taco truck.” Meet Taceaux Loceaux, which will likely be featured on the show with Bourdain stuffing his face in front of the Kingpin. You may recognize the Taceaux Laceaux truck as soon as it rolls up, whether for the chalk renderings of Day of the Dead masks and a new mural of a skeletal (yes, skeletal) Last Supper, or the

hoards of taco fans that flood the truck on weekend nights for their fill of Messin With Texas Brisket and Carnital Knowledge pork tacos. The popular truck, which is run by Alex and Mari Beth del Castillo, also offers gourmet Tex-Mex specials like Maker’s mark glazed pork belly tacos served with apple jalapeño chow chow, Maker’s aioli and chopped fire roasted jalapeños on warm corn tortillas. You can

find this food truck almost every night of the week, usually outside of Uptown hangouts Dos Jefes, 45 Tchoup and the Kingpin. If you want to know where they’re parked, it’s imperative to follow them on Twitter and Facebook for daily updates. La Cocinita, aka “The Little Kitchen,” is just that, a little kitchen located inside a bright red truck, devoted to bringing fresh and authentic Mexican and South American street food to the people of New Orleans. Co-owners Rachel Billow and Venezuelan chef Benoit Angulo offer a build-your-own menu, allowing diners to choose between tacos, arepas (stuffed cornmeal patties), patacones (stuffed plantain sandwiches) or a bowl. Diners choose a protein, including more adventurous options like roasted beets, and their own sauces and extras. Fried plantains, anyone? La Cocinita also turns out delicious specials such as chicken quesadillas, Cuban poor boys and sliders and papusas. Their thorough website shows the truck’s weekly schedule. F

Green nonprofit Parkway Partners celebrates its “30th Anniversary Gala.”

Parkway Partners celebrated its 30th anniversary with a downtown gala at the Hyatt Regency on Thursday, October 25, raising over $100,000 for the general operations and programs budget. The concepts of growing and eating local were never far from the main event, as the three-course dinner featured the best of locally grown produce. Creamy pumpkin bisque was the attention-stealer of the night. Most guests didn’t sit for too long though, with the sweet sounds of Deacon John headlining a night of

dance floor reverie that also included Anais St. John, Lena Prima, Banu Gibson and the Tom Hook Trio. The board of directors selected Dan Gill, an associate professor in consumer horticulture at Louisiana State University, as recipient of the third annual Green Spirit Award. Gill also serves as a spokesperson for the LSU AgCenter’s Get it Growing initiative and is a well-known media personality, appearing with Channel 4 Morning News, The Times-Picayune and WWL 870-AM. Gill was honored

at an earlier patron party, while 30 other honorees were recognized at the gala, each representing one year of Parkway Partners’ existence. In 30 years of service dedicated to rebuilding and preserving the beautification of New Orleans neighborhoods and community gardens, Parkway Partners has planted over 10,000 trees through ReLeaf New Orleans, restored Lee Circle and coordinated the involvement of over 3,000 students with schoolyard gardens, to name

just a few of the organization’s accomplishments. Parkway Partners continues to generate new initiatives to emphasize environmental responsibility and education, and community and economic development. F

The New Orleans Botanical Garden celebrates its third annual “Magic in the Moonlight.”

The stunning grounds of the New Orleans Botanical Garden in City Park dazzled visitors even more than usual on Friday, October 19, as the lush bushes and elegant oak trees sparkled with celestial blue and white lights in honor of “Magic in the Moonlight.” The third annual fundraiser for the Botanical Garden was a sold-out affair, raising over $120,000 for the construction of a new entrance to the Botanical Garden and Storyland.

Renowned New Orleans jazz trumpeter and singer Jeremy Davenport provided entertainment for the evening, served alongside a four-course al fresco dinner prepared by Emeril’s chef Chris Wilson and chefs de cuisine from Emeril’s, NOLA and Emeril’s Delmonico. LA/SPCA hosts its 34th annual “Howling Success” patron party and gala. The scene of caped crusaders, masked villains and brightly hued Lycra in the Hyatt Regency’s Empire Ballroom on Sat., Oct. 20, looked more like Gotham City or Metropolis, but the spirit of the event was homegrown from New Orleans. The Louisiana Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals’ superheroesthemed 34th annual “Howling Success” patron party and gala was a smashing success, raising almost $200,000 for the cause.

Jazz vocalist Ingrid Lucia, of the Flying Neutrinos family, performed at the patron party and was succeeded at the gala by the Twilight Band, with their genrebending fusion of classic New Orleans jazz and current Top Forty hits. Patrons hit the dance floor in style, and faster than Clark Kent can navigate a phone booth the night wrapped up way too soon. Super Fired Up

Super Bowl XLVII Host Committee holds its “Annual Kickoff Luncheon.”

Halloween in the Superdome was filled with treats for the 1,040 guests who gathered for the Super Bowl XLVII Host Committee’s “Annual Kickoff Luncheon.” The theme, “A Toast to Tom Benson,” honored Benson for his ownership of the Saints and Hornets in addition to his community involvement. As the rallying cry for January’s Super Bowl extravaganza, the luncheon offered a sneak peek for

special events to come, including Taste of the NFL, NFL Gospel Brunch, NFL Experience, Super Bowl Media Day, Super Bowl Media Center Fan Gallery and the Super Bowl Media Party. Guests who purchased table packages received passes to some of these exclusive events, as well as Corporate Membership to the Greater New Orleans Sports Foundation. Premiere Table attendees were also able to mingle

with the guest of honor and his wife before the luncheon. Retired New Orleans Saints quarterback and WWL-AM “Sports Talk” co-host Bobby Hebert played host as guests dined on pecan and fig salad, grilled petit tenderloin with lemon thyme shrimp, and a tiramisu tort for dessert. Centerplate provided catering for the affair.

Saks Fifth Avenue “Key to the Cure Kickoff Gala” benefits Louisiana Cancer Research Consortium.

The 12th annual “Key to the Cure Kickoff Gala” on Wednesday, October 17, signaled the start to a four-day shopping extravaganza at Saks Fifth Avenue New Orleans, all in the name of charity. Two percent of all in-store sales from October 17 through October 21 were donated to the cancer research programs of the Louisiana Cancer Research Consortium, yielding over $175,000 for the cause this year. The grand-scale opening

event boasted three full floors of entertainers and edibles, and all departments were open for shoppers to start showing their support. A Fabulous Under Forty section was open exclusively to younger patrons and featured the funky fusions of the Honey Island Swamp Band. Roast for a Cause

The LPO roasts its music director to raise money for community engagement.

“The Roast of Carlos Miguel Prieto” was the first fundraiser of its kind for the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra, held at The Roosevelt New Orleans on Thursday, October 25, to honor its Music Director with humor and to raise funds to support community engagement with the LPO. This season marks the Mexican conductor’s sixth season with the LPO. Mimi Kruger, Associate Director

of Patron Development for the LPO, was quick to explain the lightheartedness of the evening. “It was an event designed to honor the music director.” The 200 guests at the sit-down dinner were treated to a roasted beet salad, braised short ribs with mashed potatoes, brown sugar honey glazed carrots and blackberry crisp à la mode before the real cooking of the night started.

Mayor Mitch Landrieu broke the night open by cracking a few jokes, followed by monologues from a few other local celebrities: Dr. Stephen Hales, Nell Nolan, Principal Pianist Jim Atwood and Mr. and Mrs. Carlos Prieto Sr., the music director’s parents. Internationally renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma closed off the night with a few biting yet

Tickling the Ivories

Danny Driver is the featured performer at The Musical Arts Society of New Orleans’ “Nocturne X.”

Internationally acclaimed British pianist Danny Driver graced guests with his repertoire of innovative classical interpretations at “Nocturne X,” this year’s annual fundraiser for the Musical Arts Society of New Orleans. The artist, on Hyperion’s label, has occupied a spot on the MASNO’s wish list for years, and the organization was lucky enough to finally secure him as featured performer for the night.

Driver played his signature blend of genres ranging from baroque to contemporary, much to the delight of the 180 patrons at the RitzCarlton on Sunday, October 14. The concert was particularly fitting for October, as the Arts Council of New Orleans’ designated it “New Orleans Performing Arts Month.” Guests were greeted with a champagne reception before moving on to Driver’s salon recital. One for the Record Books

Jefferson Performing Arts Society sets attendance record at its 17th annual “Pasta & Puccini.”

The 35th year of the Jefferson Performing Arts Society has been one of record-setting success, even in the midst of economic downturn, and the nonprofit’s 17th annual “Pasta & Puccini” fundraising gala was no exception. Guests flocked to the community theater’s Friday, October 19, event, setting a record for gala attendance with 650 attendees. Patrons, committee members and local celebrities donned

elaborate headpieces to keep with the theme, “Un Ballo Machera (The Masked Ball),” leaving many more apt to break it down on the dance floor. It was no difficult task for Maestro Dennis Assaf and the JPAS Orchestra to coax partygoers out of their seats with their lively performance of big band music. Assaf’s wife and daughter, Nancy and Ariel respectively, treated the audience to the soaring heights of their voices, as did Italian tenor

Fillippo Pina Castiglioni and New Orleans native Micah Desonnier. Several of the night’s highlights belonged to guests – lucky Gloria Woodward won the Raffle VIP Wine Experience excursion to Sonoma, Calif., and the Pastor and Pettit couples placed the top bids on stays in Chef Andrea Appuzzo’s private villa in Capri, Italy. Make a Healthy Start

N

ew year, new you – it’s a familiar saying, but it’s more than a cliché. January makes most of us think of new beginnings and ways to improve our health, our fitness and our appearance. Luckily, New Orleans has plenty of places you can count on to help get the new year off to a healthy start. For example, any exercise that works for Drew Brees has got to be good, right? The Parks

Health & Fitness (111 Robert E. Lee Blvd., 288-PARK (9275), TheParksFitness.com) offers TRX (Total

Resistance Cross Training), a workout using suspended bands and ropes that Brees and lots of other athletes use. Owner R.J. Rice says the equipment, which takes advantage of your body’s weight, is popular with the center’s small-group exercise classes. If you prefer one-on-one training, The Parks offers that, too, Rice says. And its roster of group exercise classes is comprehensive, including yoga, Pilates, cardio, kickboxing, aerobic and spinning. What makes The Parks special, Rice says, is its friendly, welltrained staff. “Our staff separates us. We have a great team of people.” Rice’s family has been

in the business for about 50 years, so they’re always ready to help you find the program that best suits your needs. Wish you could trim your waist in just one hour? It sounds too good to be true, but Dr. Deirdre Hooper, a board-certified dermatologist at Audubon Dermatology (3525 Prytania St., No. 501, 895-3376, AudubonDermatology.com), says their new Liposonix machine uses a technique called high-intensity focus to heat a layer of fat cells and permanently destroy them. The technique is FDA-approved, takes only one hour and is done in the office. Eighty-five percent of people undergoing the treatment lose one inch of waist circumference, Dr. Hooper says. The discomfort is minimal and can be treated with pain medication. “It’s a good January procedure,” Dr. Hooper says, and it’s great for people who can’t afford a lot of down time. Other in-office procedures that work wonders are fillers and laser resurfacing treatments. If your plans for 2013 call for travel, stop by Perfect Fit Shoes (5625 Magazine St., 456-5993, PerfectFitShoes.net) to make sure you – and your

feet – tour in comfort. Physical therapist Gini Davis opened her store in 2007 in Metairie and moved Uptown in 2011. She specializes in difficult-to-find shoe brands that come in all widths and plenty of styles. Perfect Fit Shoes grew out of her patients’ need to find comfortable shoes that didn’t look clunky. She carries brands like Monroe, which are difficult to find in our area – as well as men’s shoes – and she can special order just about anything a customer wants. Pregnant women often visit the store to find shoes that will carry them comfortably during their pregnancy, Davis says. And the shoes are well made. “Our shoes last forever,” she says. Thanks to the new healthcare laws, preventive health visits for many should be covered fully by your insurance, says Dr. Janifer Tropez-Martin of Tulane’s Center for Women’s Health

(4720 Interstate 10 Service Road, No. 302, 988-8070, TulaneHealthCare.com). Take out your calendar

now and schedule your annual gynecological visit, she says, and talk with your physician about how often you need mammograms and Pap smears. Your annual visit is also a good

time to have an HPV screening and receive any immunization booster shots that are due. If 2013 is the year you’re planning to have a baby, Dr. Tropez-Martin recommends seeing your doctor before you get pregnant so you can find out about the prenatal vitamins and other supplements you might need. And those annual visits are good times to ask about other health worries you might have, such as depression, poor sleep habits or obesity. Those talks often turn out to be a vital part of the visit. On a lighter note, maybe this is the year you’re really going to streamline your hair care regimen. Opening mid-January, Blo Blow Dry Bar (5330 Magazine St., BlowMeDry.com) hears you, and offers a “wash, blow and go” service that owner Emily Kupperman says is sure to catch on in humid New Orleans. “We don’t cut, we don’t color,” Kupperman says; each stylist is specially trained in all the popular blowout styles, and the fee is a flat $35, no matter how long your hair is. Service should take about 35 to 45 minutes, so you can be in and out on your lunch hour. And because all stylists are trained, you can book with whomever is available and still get the look you want. Blo will also offer hair products and extensions. A bonus: There’s plenty of parking. A new year is a great time to kick-start your exercise routine. If you use a personal trainer, you can achieve results that would take you a year or more in eight to 12 weeks, says Eduardo Yibrin ((225) 588-0045, EduardoYibrin.com). Yibrin works with clients at Temple Gym on Magazine Street or in their own homes. (Clients don’t need to join the gym.) Using a personal trainer is advantageous because they know the correct way to use exercise equipment, Yibrin says, so workouts are more effective. Trainers also encourage their clients to work as hard as they can, every session. “You wouldn’t do that on your own,” he says. Yibrin works with clients of both sexes and all ages and can help people recovering from knee or hip replacement, as well as those who just want to look better and feel healthier. It is true: Wearing the right clothes can make workouts more fun, and feeling comfortable in your clothes can make you more inclined to hit the gym. Marloe Goodman, owner of Priorities (5523 Magazine St., 899-2212, PrioritiesNola.com), has years of experience in helping customers find the appropriate outfits for tennis, Pilates, yoga, Zumba or any other exercise. Goodman prides herself on service; she knows her merchandise and can help customers find the most comfortable, flattering pants and tops. A plus is that many of these outfits are also great for travel or running errands. Her lines are all wash-andwear; no ironing and no dry cleaning, and they don’t shrink or fade. They turn out to be clothes

you can live in, not just work out in. Treat yourself to a new outfit and face your exercise routine with a new attitude. What you eat, of course, is just as important as what you wear. Molly Kimball, fitness expert at Ochsner’s Elmwood Fitness Center (1200 S. Clearview

Parkway, Suite 1200, and three other locations, 744-1600, ElmwoodFitness.com), reminds health-

Priorities

conscious people to expand their food horizons. Kale, spinach and blueberries are just a few of the “superfoods” getting all the press, but lots of other fruits and vegetables are equally as good for you. She also warns that some of the foods with good credentials, such as quinoa, hummus, nuts and olive oil, have lots of calories, so it’s best to watch your portions even when dining on so-called healthy food. If you’re setting health goals for the new year, Kimball recommends making them small enough to accomplish, and adding details. Getting more exercise, for example, is too vague; instead, pick a specific class you plan to attend and enroll. That boosts your chances of achieving your goal. You will enjoy eating those healthy foods a lot more if you take care of your teeth. Dr. Jeffrey Richardson, owner of Metairie Dental Care (3401 W. Esplanade Ave., 301-3590, MetairieDentalCare.net), stresses prevention with his patients; taking care of the teeth you have, he says, is much better than replacing them. He reminds people to limit the number of fitness drinks, such as Gatorade, that they consume during workouts. The drinks promote an acidic environment in your mouth, which can lead to bacteria and then to cavities. For children, replace soft drinks and juice with water as often as possible. Fluoride treatments are usually routine for kids, Richardson says, but adults might want to ask the dentist about them because the fluoride can strengthen aging teeth. And don’t stress over dental X-rays, he says. They are the only way for dentists to see hard-to-reach places in your mouth, and the radiation is minimal. F January 2013 St. Charles Avenue | 37

Assisted Living & Independence Lifestyle is key in deciding what kind of retirement living is right for you or your loved one. By Kelcy Wilburn

W

hether you’re the adult child of an aging parent, or someone approaching 65 or older looking for ways to enrich your lifestyle in and out of the home, New Orleans has an astounding abundance of options for increasing quality of life and providing care when needed for its senior community. Needs are specific to every individual and family, and retirement or assisted living can be tailored to those needs. In some cases, there are no needs, just wants – desires for less home maintenance and more mobility and social activities. From completely independent living in a continuing care retirement community, to the helpful companionship of an in-home service or required medical assistance in an assisted living or nursing care residence, researching and choosing the right option for your family need not be frightening nor intimidating. The services

are here to help individuals to continue living their lives as they want to live them. Located in Uptown and overlooking the Mississippi River is Lambeth House (150 Broadway St., 865-1960, LambethHouse.com), an age-qualified community that offers condo-style residences for independent living with the option for assisted living and nursing care if and when needed. Lambeth House is New Orleans’ only continuing care retirement community with LifeCare, a program allowing residents the ability to move across levels of care if ever needed with little to no increase in fees. Maintaining a person’s lifestyle is paramount at Lambeth House. Residents can customize their home, maintain their pet and enjoy a robust offering of services and amenities that include flexible meal plans, weekly housekeeping and grounds maintenance, parking, wellness and fitness center, business center, interfaith chapel,

game room, salon and cultural, educational and social events across the city. According to Helen Foster, owner of Foster Strategy, LLC, a recent survey from Lambeth House residents described their living environment as “delightful” and “stimulating” – some remarking that they “can’t imagine living anywhere else.” This year, Lambeth House is expanding with a new $17 million state-of-the-art building. Continuing the legacy of St. Anna’s Residence, St. Anna’s at Lambeth House will be located on the Lambeth House campus. The building will feature a new wellness and fitness center, lap pool, chapel, meditation garden, massage therapy room, salon and additional nursing suites. Poydras Home (5354 Magazine St., 897-0535, PoydrasHome.com), is another nonprofit

continuing care retirement community located Uptown, which, in addition to independent

living, assisted living and nursing care, also offers memory support services, as well as PHASE, a senior day program for older adults still residing in their homes. PHASE allows a respite for caregivers, providing them time to attend to responsibilities or break from the caregiving routine, and it allows participants the opportunity to interact, socialize and benefit from programs and activities while having onsite medical supervision. Poydras Home’s grounds include the Garden House for independent living in one-bedroom apartments, Historic House for assisted living and nursing care in private rooms and Hunter House for Alzheimer’s and memory care in private rooms. Currently under expansion is the new Oak House, which will feature 33 new assisted living rooms, 11 of which will be dedicated to memory support. Additionally, the Historic Home is currently being renovated to include a new nursing area, a therapy and wellness room, and two new dining spaces with fine dining and bistro settings. “One strength of ours is the small size,” says director of Admissions & Social Services Erin Kolb. “We’re able to provide a personal experience to residents in a true homelike atmosphere.” Now in its 195th year, Poydras Home has nearly two centuries of experience in caring, first as a home for female children and now for older adults. “We have the history and service to back up our mission and what we do, a reputation of caring,” says Kolb. Overlooking picturesque Bayou St. John and City Park is Vista Shores (5958

and barbershop is available, along with a full calendar of social events. While moving to independent living communities works for many, there are also those who wish to remain in-home despite changing needs and abilities. As these changes occur, non-medical and/or medical assistance may be necessary.

services begin with a professional assessment visit. A plan of care is designed specific to the client’s needs while incorporating family input. Experienced, bonded and insured caregivers are chosen based on need and personality. If Geriatric Care Management services are needed, such as in the case of long-distance caregiving, professional Geriatric Care Managers are available to consult with family on complex Home Care Solutions (828-0900, care issues, act as a liaison between family and HomeCareNewOrleans.com), provides in-home, healthcare provider and coordinate services. non-medical assistance and companionship “In one or two consultations with a Geriatric as well as Geriatric Care Management services Care Manager, clients gain an accurate picture when needed. of their needs and the local resources available “While Home Care Solutions isn’t an assisted to meet those needs,” says owner and director Dianne Boazman, LCSW, CMC. Home Care Solutions “Often times, people won’t call for help until they’re in a crisis situation. Our Geriatric Care team knows the full gamut of available care options and how to efficiently access services needed. They are invaluable in helping families prepare for the best fit for loved ones.” Locally owned and operated, Gifted Nurses (2748 Metairie Lawn Drive, Metairie, 832-8985, (888) 566-8773, GiftedNurses. com) provides both non-medical

residence with three “neighborhoods” of one- or two-bedroom apartments and an entire floor dedicated to memory care. Their mission is to encourage residents’ own unique balance of independence and to provide them with the greatest level of assistance possible. The innovative community design incorporates community, familiarity, safety and support in a home-like environment. “Because we’re locally owned and operated, we have the ability to truly personalize care and services according to the unique needs of our residents,” says director of Community Relations Denise Gordy. “Unique to Vista Shores is our 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. open dining policy. We offer elegant, restaurant-style dining prepared by chef Sylvester Campbell, formerly executive chef at the Le Pavillon Hotel’s Crystal Room.” Additionally, an on-site beauty salon

living facility, our caregiver staff frequently provides complementary support services for residents of various assisted living facilities as well as in the home,” says owner and director Betty Landreaux, LCSW, CMC, NCG. “Based on a professional assessment of need, our caregivers can assist residents with such activities as running errands, walking pets, cooking light meals, doing laundry, helping residents shower, dress, move to and from bed, go to the salon or doctor appointments – any personal care assistance and/ or personal tasks their adult children cannot accomplish because of time or distance.” With Home Care Solutions, all in-home

and medical in-home assistance. In non-medical assistance, Certified Nursing Assistants and specially trained sitters help with daily activities. Gifted Nurses offers services anywhere the client calls home, including independent living communities and, in some cases, assisted living residences. If and when medical needs grow, Gifted Nurses can also provide skilled medical assistance, offering a smooth and flexible transition. “We also have care givers with specialties,” says co-owner Mullady Voelker,. “If the client has Alzheimer’s, for example, we have a core group with training in the disease and in cognitive stimulation exercises that help slow its progression.” The amount of daily or weekly care is based on the need of the individual after the initial assessment. “We offer services from an hour a week up to 24/7,” says Voelker, emphasizing Gifted Nurses’ flexibility in working with individuals and families. Flexibility is key with each of these service providers, as they flex to your lifestyle or that of your loved one. They make it their business. In a city where lifestyle is everything, rest assured no matter your needs, you still get to be you. F

Everyone Asked For You Lowery Church’s animal-inspired second birthday party It is so easy to have a birthday party at home with an animal-themed room – we just happened to create one. We have five grandchildren, so we decided to redecorate an upstairs bedroom with the help of Kevin Gillentine and Vincent Bergeal. They painted the backdrop, and I resurrected the animal headboards that I made for our children more than 30 years ago. I added two new giraffes, Lowery’s favorites, and we were ready for his second birthday party! We had a birthday cake, cupcakes,

gummy worms and teddy bears, chocolate candies and pretzels. Each child got an animal bowl filled with ice cream, puppet washcloths, a small white box filled with toys and markers, all topped with fish sponges. They even got to take home lettuce and parsley to plant in their own gardens. We played games, sang songs and drew pictures. If you really want to go over the top, have the farm animals come visit – you can rent pigs, goats, turtles, chickens and more with which the children can play. F Linda Reese Bjork photographs

LARRY CURTIS “MY MISSION IS SIMPLE—TO OBTAIN AN OUTSTANDING RESULT FOR EVERY CLIENT THROUGH DEDICATED, AGGRESSIVE AND RELENTLESS REPRESENTATION.

“In complex, high-stakes cases, there is no substitute for experience— none, Curtis says. “And experience teaches that, among other things, careful preparation wins cases.

Larry Curtis is recognized as one of Louisiana’s pre-eminent personal injury lawyers. Curtis has represented maritime workers—drilling rig and platform workers, commercial divers, offshore construction workers, special service workers, dredge workers and fishermen—wrongfully injured or killed. “My mission is simple—to obtain an outstanding result for every client through dedicated, aggressive and relentless representation.

He recalls an early lesson he learned as a young law student. “I read an interview of one of the country’s top trial lawyers, Curtis says. “In speaking about trial preparation, he remarked that if you ever see a lawyer pull a rabbit out of a hat, the lawyer probably had 10 rabbits and 10 hats. I believed that statement to be true when I first read it and my own courtroom experience has confirmed its validity.

EXPERIENCE AND EXPERTISE With more than 30 years of experience, Curtis is a seasoned trial lawyer, with a national reputation in maritime personal injury cases. Over and over, Curtis has won multimillion-dollar verdicts and settlements for his clients. “I am always motivated to provide the best possible representation to my clients, because I know that they are counting on me to help them through a very difficult time in their life. He believes that his three decades of trial experience gives his clients a decided advantage in the courtroom.

RECOGNIZED AND HONORED Curtis holds the highest rating, AV, given by the Martindale-HubbellŽ Law Directory. He is listed in the Bar Register of Preeminent Lawyers, Woodward/White’s publication, The Best Lawyers in America, and selected to Louisiana Super Lawyers. More than a decade ago, St. John’s University honored Curtis with its Alumni Outstanding Achievement Medal. In the summer of 2005, Curtis was invited to join The Academy of Trial Advocacy, an exclusive group of some of the country’s most experienced and accomplished trial lawyers. He is also a founding member of The Aletheia Institute, a national by-invitation-only organization of lawyers committed to promoting truth in advocacy, full disclosure in discovery and a fair measure of justice to all litigants. SERVICE TO THE PROFESSION AND COMMUNITY Curtis is a member of the American, Federal, Louisiana, and Lafayette Bar associations, The Maritime Law Association of the United States, as well as the American and Louisiana Associations for Justice. He has served as a member of the President’s Advisory Council, the Board of Governors, and the Council of Directors of the Louisiana Association for Justice. Curtis is a member of The American Inn of Court of Acadiana. Curtis also currently serves as President of the Lafayette Parish Bar Association. He has been asked to speak at state and national professional meetings on various topics concerning trial practice. Community involvement is important to him as well: for five years he has served as the host of a monthly TV program about Catholic social teaching.

NELSON & HAMMONS, APLC LOUISIANA MEDICAL MALPRACTICE A sick or injured person relies upon the doctors and nurses treating him to provide appropriate care. Sadly, not all medical treatment achieves the intended result; sometimes a bad outcome is caused by medical malpractice. The disappointed patient or his surviving family members want to find answers to explain what happened, often seeking help from an attorney. In Louisiana, the health care industry is heavily protected, making it critically important for sick or injured patients to obtain legal advice from attorneys who are capable of handling this complicated and professionally sensitive area of Louisiana law. For 30 years JOHN HAMMONS has concentrated his law practice in the area of medical negligence.

EXPERIENCED AND KNOWLEDGEABLE Medical malpractice litigation requires a unique devotion to detail and an appreciation for the nuances of the law along with a keen understanding of applicable medical standards. Having focused his practice exclusively on medical malpractice litigation, Hammons has developed the skills, the knowledge of both law and medicine, and the experience to provide superior representation to his clients. COMPASSIONATE AND PRACTICAL Practicing this type of law is challenging and rewarding for Hammons. Every potential client who seeks help from Hammons has suffered at the very least a disappointment and quite often a tragic, permanent loss. When making a decision to investigate and pursue a medical malpractice claim, Hammons is highly selective because the overall process is time-consuming, expensive, and emotionally difficult for clients and counsel. HAMMONS NAMED TO LOUISIANA SUPER LAWYERS FOR SEVENTH-CONSECUTIVE YEAR Hammons leads a firm that devotes its resources and efforts to investigating and prosecuting medical malpractice cases in a thorough and professional manner throughout Louisiana. He has been at the forefront of the development of Louisiana’s medical malpractice law and precedentsetting cases. Hammons practices law with the help of three associates, Mrs. Cornell R. Flournoy, Mrs. Chaile M. Allen, and Mr. William W. Murray, Jr., and his talented staff. From his office in Shreveport, Hammons remains committed to fighting for quality medical care for his clients and their families as well as seeking to obtain just compensation for those who have been seriously injured as a result of substandard medical care.

Fred Herman is a trial attorney who has represented individuals, families, and businesses in serious injury and complex business litigation for over 37 years. Mr. Herman has served as a mediator, arbitrator, hearing officer, and special master in complex civil disputes. His practice areas include serious injury, business transactions and litigation, and health care litigation. Mr. Herman has taught and lectured at Loyola and Tulane Law Schools and is a member of various professional associations, including Academy of Court Appointed Special Masters, Louisiana and American Associations for Justice, Louisiana Bank Counsel and American Healthcare Lawyers Association.

At 32, John Houghtaling purchased the firm he started working in as a law student, under the tutelage of the late, great trial attorney Wendell Gauthier. Houghtaling has enjoyed an astonishing litigation record collecting over $138 million for businesses and individual clients. With a specialty of insurance and business litigation, Houghtaling has been recognized by New Orleans CityBusiness for Leadership in Law 2005-2008 and was inducted into its Hall of Fame in 2009. As managing partner, he leads a staff of 37, including 16 attorneys with offices in New Orleans and Houston. In 2010, Houghtaling partnered with actor Kevin Costner and successfully brought to market technology that was used to assist in the cleanup of the BP oil spill.

James Williams is a catastrophic personal injury and business litigation attorney, having won over $100 million for individual clients since 2003. He became the youngest judge in Louisiana when the Supreme Court appointed him Judge Pro Tempore in Orleans Parish Civil District Court. He was named one of the Top 100 Trial Lawyers by ATLA and one of the Top 40 Lawyers under 40 by the National Bar Association. Williams was inducted into the New Orleans CityBusiness Hall of Fame and named in the Million Dollar Advocates Forum’s list of Top Trial Lawyers in America. Mr. Williams has litigated cases in California, Florida, Illinois, Maryland, Missouri, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Milan, Italy.

Stumm – Howard Celie Carriere Stumm and Alvin Pike Howard III have known each other their whole lives, as a result of the close friendship between their mothers, Kit Stumm and Rand Mason. The two didn’t see much of each other growing up, as Pike grew up in Baltimore and Celie in New Orleans, but began dating after college following a trip with both families to the British Virgin Islands. After dating for a few months, Pike made the decision to leave New York City and move down to New Orleans to be with Celie. He knew he was with the woman with whom he would spend the rest of his life. Early one morning on February 15, 2012, when Celie was on her way back from an exercise class, Pike surprised her with breakfast on her porch – and proposed.

Dana Reed

dancer in New York City for many years, jumped at the chance to return home to the South. Given Reed’s background in dance, she teaches everything from traditional ballet to modern dance and African drumming. In addition, she introduces students to a variety of arts at a young age, so that they may specialize in their interest later on. Hope Stone’s programs also introduce students to lessons in music, theater, yoga, creative writing and the visual arts. Reed’s newest program, Dance Quarter, will launch this fall. Starting with three schools, with plans to expand to three more in the spring, it will introduce children to ballroom dance lessons during their PE classes. At the end of the school year, children from all of the schools will participate in a gala performance. Additionally, Reed began the Alternative Collaborations dance group in 2003, and she decided to continue the program when she relocated to New Orleans. It is a professional troupe featuring all-local dancers. She will soon create an offshoot of this group for

area teenagers, allowing the young students to learn from a variety of professional dancers. When it comes to launching new programs, Reed says that making connections and networking the New Orleans area is key. She notes that most New Orleanians are grateful to help launch original programs. The Greater New Orleans Foundation, with its partnership in youth development and community outreach, also aided her. Furthermore, Reed notes that parents are always willing to help. Although New Orleans famously embraces the arts, Reed notes that community support is crucial to the survival of her programs. Unlike many after-school programs, Reed operates Hope Stone at no cost to her students. She always welcomes volunteers. Additionally, her program is currently in need of office space. What is the most fulfilling aspect of her work? “I get to do what I love every single day,” she says. “Every day I leave my job knowing that I touched the lives of children. It is very fulfilling.” F

Hope Stone Kids New Orleans Dana Reed, the director of Hope Stone Kids New Orleans, draws from her background as a professional dancer to inspire creativity in area students. Founded in 2002, the Hope Stone Kids program meets the artistic and emotional needs of underserved students in Houston, Texas. The New Orleans program, its first national launching, provides outreach to the New Orleans community by partnering with local schools. Hope Stone Kids New Orleans serves 250 children all over the metro area,

providing free weekday arts programs to deserving students from neighborhoods such as Tremé, as well as homeschoolers. Reed began her career as a professional dance instructor at the Bates Dance Festival, a three-week event in Maine begun in 1983. After serving as an education intern, she decided to pursue dance instruction as a full-time profession. At Bates she met Jane Wiener, the Hope Stone founder, who invited Reed to launch the New Orleans program. Reed, a Mississippi native who worked as a professional steven hronek photographs

David Judd Brother Martin High School

David Thomas Judd is a senior at Brother Martin High School with a passion for reading and volunteering. Judd founded and serves as president of the Brother Martin Bibliomaniacs Book Club, as well as editor-in-chief of The Pen and the Sword literary magazine. He is also highly involved in the Speech and Debate club – though he finds his book club the most rewarding. Even though most students Judd has come in contact with dislike reading – because it can feel like homework, he says – he feels that this club is essential for Brother Martin. “Students learn to love reading and make it a hobby of theirs for the rest of their lives. The most rewarding part of starting the Bibliomaniacs is knowing that I provided someone the opportunity to fall in love with books,” says Judd. Education is a strong theme in Judd’s activism. In 2010, he volunteered with Catholic Charities to help an educational summer camp for families in need at Incarnate World School. As a camp counselor, he helped campers with their academic and cheryl gerber photograph

athletic lessons. He taught the campers how to use educational computer software and also how to organize a football game. “At Incarnate Word, I could actually see the good I was doing for these children. I saw it every time one of the children understood their lesson because of me, or when their face would light up with joy while playing a basketball game outside,” he says. “It was truly rewarding knowing that I helped provide an opportunity for impoverished kids to enjoy summer.” Judd has also worked for Second Harvesters Food Bank by helping package food for needy families. For about a week, he would head to Second Harvesters to start the long day of picking through different food donations. While volunteering, he assembled thousands of packages with food and supplies. His oldest brother, Kevin Judd, has inspired him to become an activist while still a student. Kevin was an Eagle Scout, and Judd would watch his brother clean apartments and repair vents and appliances at retirement homes for his Eagle Scott Project. Even though he was much younger, the experience still impacted him. He says, “I remember seeing how thankful the people were for my brother’s help and how happy that made him. I was exposed to the benefits of activism by my brother and it inspired me to pursue my own path of service.” Judd is considering on becoming a teacher or journalist as his future career. He knows that wherever he goes for college, he plans on being active in antibullying and environmental protection groups. F January 2013 St. Charles Avenue | 67

new orleans nostalgia

By Seale Paterson

With Super Bowl XLVII, New Orleans ties Miami for the most prolific Super Bowl Host City, at 10 each. The Louisiana Superdome – now Mercedes-Benz Superdome – is the clear winner of host stadiums at seven games. Tulane Stadium, where the first three local Super Bowls were played, is tied for third place. The first local Super Bowl – IV, 1970 – was fought hard for by Mayor Victor Schiro and his politically connected task force. But it was lagniappe that brought the game to New Orleans: Al Hirt’s trumpet playing. After wowing the owners at the bid party, his offer to play the Super Bowl halftime show free of charge was an offer they couldn’t refuse. Game tickets cost $15, and the entertainment alone was worth the admission. Al Hirt and Doc Severinsen faced off in a “Battle of the Horns,” which was followed by two hot-air balloons lifting off for a race. One balloon crashed into the stands instead (the only injury was a member of the princess’ court suffered a broken leg). Halftime featured Carol Channing and the Southern University Marching Band in a tribute to Mardi Gras, complete with a mini-parade. The most recent New Orleans-hosted Super Bowl – XXXVI in 2002 – was also full of firsts. It was the first Super Bowl after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, and it was by far the most patriotic and emotional event in its history. The attacks caused the date of Super Bowl to be moved back a week, which in turn created another first for New Orleans: the first time Mardi Gras festivities were paused for a week to accommodate the sporting event. The halftime show featuring U2 included a few firsts as well: the first time a single act performed the halftime show alone, and the first time the music was performed live, rather than lip-synched to prerecorded music. Super Bowl XII, in 1978, was the first time the game was played in the Superdome, and the Cowboys beat the Broncos 27-10. It was also the first time the game was played in prime-time, and the first (and only) time two people received MVP honors (Dallas’ Randy White and Harvey Martin). The Southern University marching band led the pregame festivities, accompanied by cheerleaders from both playing teams. Al Hirt and Pete Fountain led the halftime entertainment in a production titled “From Paris to Paris of America.” Image provided courtesy of the New Orleans Public Library, Louisiana Division.
