A fresh look for a new year, we hope that you enjoy St. Charles Avenue’s updated layout! Art Director Sarah George has crafted a new appearance that’s clean, classy and classic all at once. We hope you enjoy it as much as we do. The start of a new year also brings thoughts of resolutions, and many of those tend to be focused on making ourselves fitter, healthier and happier. To that end, we bring you a feature on how to achieve those results using the tips, tricks and products of eight local experts. Maybe because of those resolutions, we’re living longer. Because of that, many of us will have to help our parents as they age. Our second feature lays out local options and helps to guide your steps along the way. This issue also includes our annual Registry of Charitable Events for January through April. Please look to these events to see what you want to attend, which nonprofits you want to support and what dates are already very busy – before you set a date for your fundraiser! If you don’t see your event here, or you’d like to add your date to our monthly rolling calendars, please visit MyNewOrleans.com/CharitableEvent and fill out the form you find there for each fundraiser you’d like to see listed. We also use these forms to decide coverage, so fill it out today! Personally, I always get antsy as one year rolls into the next. As I look back at what I’ve accomplished as well as my failures, at the wonderful moments I’ve had with friends and family and the losses we’ve all suffered, at the moments I’ve felt most secure and confident within myself and at the ones where I questioned my every choice, sometimes I wonder what horrors await. And then, well, then I share a laugh with my co-workers, a hug with my friends and a kiss from my husband and those worries dissipate like smoke. I hope that as you make your resolutions and celebrate Carnival, you take a moment to look around you, count your blessings and see this life for the happy miracle it is! Happy Mardi Gras!

Growing Local NOLA Our connection to local sources just got stronger by Marilee Hovet

A couple of years ago I had the pleasure of meeting Alice Waters, founder of The Edible Schoolyard and owner of the renowned Chez Panisse restaurant in Berkeley, California. With her passion for locally sourced, fresh food, Waters is one of the country’s most effective and accomplished food activists. Here in New Orleans, where all things culinary are central to our very existence, we’re experiencing our own food activism movement that’s changing the way our city thinks about food. A key player in this movement is the Recirculating Farms Coalition, a nonprofit organization committed to building sustainable, local sources of healthful and affordable fresh food. Additionally, the Coalition works at the local, state and federal levels to promote policies that support farms and will ensure the presence of healthful foods in our schools. What are Recirculating Farms?

Recirculating farms use recycled water to grow everything from fish (aquaculture) to flowers, herbs, fruits and vegetables on their own (hydroponics) or together with fish (aquaponics); because these farms need not connect to natural water sources, they’re flexible in terms of size and location. With our planet facing a crisis of sustainability, self-contained farms are crucial to the future of agriculture. Growing Local NOLA, a project of the Recirculating Farm Coalition in partnership with New Orleans Food and Farm Network and many others, is a Central City food and farm center that’s providing its community

12 st. charles Avenue January 2016

with healthful, fresh food while raising public awareness about the many benefits of community gardening, sustainability in farming and eating locally sourced foods. Are you a Locavore?

Individuals who maintain a diet consisting principally of locally grown or produced food are the driving force behind the Locavore movement. While locavores do benefit individually by eating fresh, healthful foods, the impact of eating locally reaches further than the health of the individual. The locavore movement strengthens our local economy by keeping the money we spend on food closer to home, it keeps us in touch with the relationship between the food we eat and the cycle of the seasons and it helps our children understand the connection between our health, our food and the earth. My 8-year-old son, Christopher, is always baffled when I tell him we can’t have grapes in the middle of winter because they aren’t in season. It doesn’t help that, as I’m explaining this to him, he’s typically standing next to a big display of imported grapes at the grocery store. He is 8 and he loves grapes; the fact that they’re imported from Chile doesn’t deter him (nor does

it deter countless other consumers) from wanting to eat them. But I’m confident that won’t always be the case – thankfully, programs like Growing Local NOLA are making a difference in way we understand and think about food in our city and beyond. For More Information

Hike it Baby Enjoy taking your family outdoors by Lynne Gibbons

Typically, if someone tells you to take a hike, you might take offense. But if that message comes from Monika Baudoin, you might have a very different reaction. Baudoin is responsible for bringing Hike It Baby to the New Orleans area in September 2015. “Hike It Baby” is an international group founded in ’13 by Shanti Hodges in Portland, Oregon, that promotes healthy lifestyles for families by planning and organizing outdoor hikes for moms, dads, babies and toddlers. Their goal is to get families outdoors, experiencing and appreciating nature. The New Orleans branch usually offers one planned hike a week, but often there are more. In the past several weeks, hikes have taken place at The Woodlands Conservancy in Belle Chase; Beau Rivage and Northlake Nature Center in Mandeville; Bayou Segnette State Park in Westwego; LaSalle Park in Metairie; and Metairie Cemetery in New Orleans. Where to Start

14 st. charles Avenue January 2016

Just the Facts

Depending on your skill or stamina level, you can choose a hike suited to your needs based on a color-coded rating system developed by the Hike It Baby leaders. A hike designated as “Green” signifies one that is relatively easy, on mostly even ground and would be stroller-friendly. These hikes are typically less than three miles in distance. “Blue” trails are considered moderately difficult, better suited for carriers than strollers and are usually between three and five miles. “Black” trails are considered difficult and very rarely accommodate a stroller. These hikes may be between four and seven miles and usually include uneven terrain and steeper inclines.

• Hike It Baby is a new, fun program promoting healthy families and children by providing opportunities to explore nature together.

Social Scene

Here is the best part: It’s completely free! Hike It Baby is a social group that you can follow through their website, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Pinterest. What a fun way to enjoy nature with your children and new friends! n

• They offer organized weekly hikes in and around the New Orleans area. • Hikes are rated and classified so that you know which is a good is fit for you and your baby. • It was founded in Oregon in 2013 and brought to New Orleans only four months ago. • A calendar of scheduled hikes, ratings and classification explanations are available at HikeItBaby.com. • Meet a diverse group of moms and dads and enjoy nature with your children. • It’s free to join! • Questions? Email Monika Baudoin at NewOrleans@HikeItBaby.com. • Follow Hike It Baby on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Pinterest.

photos b y ashley d. scheider; courtesy hititbaby.com

If you’re interested in getting outside with other moms, the Hike It Baby website is a great place to start. The calendar not only lists all scheduled hikes, but also provides a map to the location as well as the difficulty level and duration of the hike. The hike leader will post whether or not each particular hike is well suited for strollers or baby-carriers or if the terrain is a good fit for toddlers to walk with you. You will also find support out on the trail. As you can see on the Hike It Baby Facebook page, the mantra of the group is “Leave No Hike Behind.” Translated into new-mom lingo, this means if you need to stop to feed a baby, change a diaper or simply deal with a fussy child, it isn’t a problem. The motto also applies to the athletic ability of the parent as well.

Skincare Gold Facial oils are your skin’s best friend by Lorin Gaudin

Facial oils to moisturize, treat and repair are all the rage. From big box to boutique companies, skincare lines now include beautiful dark glass dropper bottles filled with blends and promises. Following the guidelines of skincare guru Caroline Hirons (CarolineHirons.com), the best products don’t contain mineral oil, are cold pressed and sourced from living things: plants, vegetables, fruits and flowers. Cold pressed oils ensure that every essential nutrient is maintained, and it also means purer, cleaner base. As Hirons reminds us, “Oils are suitable for all skin types – dry, dehydrated, normal, oily and acne-prone. They are miracle workers that have been in use for thousands of years.” Many oils are recommended for use in the evening, along with facial massage (with fingers or a cooling jade roller), though they can also be used in the morning. Skin conditions change day-to-day, so one day it may be appropriate to moisturize with an oil and the next to mix a drop or two in foundation. Because there are so many facial oils on the market today, it’s recommended to lean botanical and vitamin-packed. What makes a facial oil great? How quickly it’s absorbed and whether the oil’s texture is soft and light, versus cloying. The scent is another factor. Most botanicals have a touch of lavender to soften the aroma of some of the active oils, while others reflect a heavier hand with top quality flower oils (jasmine for instance) to give aromatherapeutic benefits. Slogging through a great number of popular oils, these are considered the current crop of liquid gold: Sunday Riley’s Luna Oil is notorious for having an herbaceous scent that’s either loved or hated. It is a powerful overnight 16 st. charles Avenue January 2016

treatment oil packed with blue tansy, a next generation retinoid that’s said to improve the skin’s appearance and battle the signs of aging. This is one oil said to show immediate results. (Available at Sephora.) Herbivore Botanicals’ Orchid Oil is pumped with jasmine sambac and Japanese camellia oils to assist in defending against free radicals, increase elasticity and offer vitamins and fatty acids to help with premature aging. It smells divine. (Find the line, there are two other facial oils and a couple body oils that are stunning as well, at söpo.) Green Evangeline’s Elasticity Bath and Body Oil is lush, fast-absorbing and can be used on the face. (A local product available on Etsy.) The Blissful Body’s Miracle Beauty Oil and Serum is a personal favorite for adding to foundation. Recommended by beauty babe Jaclyn Hill, it gives a gorgeous glow without greasiness. (Only available online through Etsy, a portion of proceeds goes to ministries that help women and children in need.) Try This Any moment now Chef Scot Maki will open his new restaurant, Trinity, on Decatur Street in the spot formerly occupied by Maximo's. Maki's menu marries elements of the cuisines and techniques of Italy, France, Vietnam and Acadiana. Seating is available both indoors an out – always desirable in the French Quarter – and the menu looks great:

window into which to cram some virtuous dining choices between the belt-busting excesses of the holidays and the debauchery of Mardi Gras. I begin every New Year by kicking carbs and hitting the gym, so I can look my best in order to compete with teenagers for beads during Carnival. I used to say my annual January health kick was motivated purely by vanity and immaturity – and it still is to a great degree – but these days I also just feel poisoned by too much oyster dressing and champagne, and I look forward to my post-holiday cleanup almost as much as I enjoy the smorgasbord that necessitates it. I seemed to have plenty of over-indulged company on a recent post-holiday afternoon when I visited the Uptown outpost of Satsuma Cafe for a clean, restorative meal. I kicked off with The Cleanser, a juice of beet, fennel, cucumber, lemon and celery, then moved on to a Raw Vegetable Salad, which changes seasonally but during my visit consisted of paper thin layers of beets and fennel tossed with arugula, avocado slices, sprouts, sunflower seeds and Bragg’s apple cider vinaigrette. My dining companion went for the Green Breakfast Sandwich that combines one fried egg, baby arugula, tomato, avocado mash and Swiss on a choice of toast, bagel or croissant. I have always had a thing for places located near the Mississippi River and have lived no more than a block away from it for most of my adult life, so I was thrilled when chef Brack May opened the charming and rustic Truck Farm Tavern 10 miles or so upriver on River Road in St. Rose. I showed up with my virtue intact and left with it in tatters. Everyone I dined with that night

fell in love with Truck Farm Tavern. The location, the art collection, our waitress Brenda, the fun and inventive menu, and the very easy prices immediately earned this place a top rating. We devoured Red Neck Egg Rolls (stuffed with smoked pork) with Apricot Mustard, Smoked Pork Poutine with Onion Gravy and Cheese Curds, Oyster Toast with Rockefeller Spinach and Lemon Aioli, and the Farmer's Market Vegetable and Local Goat Cheese Tart with Overnight Tomato Jam before moving on to the beautiful Truck Farm Salad. We tossed off all restraint and ordered the daily special of Double-cut Chop of Wild Boar with Sausage and Cherry Compote, Sweet & Sour Cabbage, Au Gratin Potatoes with Gruyere Cheese, Chicken Parmesan with House-made Mozzarella for only $12.95 and a Grilled N.Y. Strip with Loaded Smashed Potatoes and Rockefeller Spinach for only $19.95. For dessert it was a Red Velvet Ho-Ho roll with Cream Cheese Filling and a square of rich, dense Bread Pudding. So much for virtue. But, word to the wise: The portions are as gigantic and the price tags are small. We took home enough to graze upon for days – and one of my dining companions was a 19-year-old man to whom I refer as The Bottomless Pit. He finally hit bottom at the Truck Farm Tavern. n PHOTO: Truck Farm Salad made with Field Greens, Roasted Beets, Citrus, Little Tomatoes, Cucumbers and Sherry-Maple Vinaigrette

The sixth annual “Magic in the Moonlight” brought a sold-out crowd of more than 344 to the Botanical Garden at City Park for an al-fresco fete in the new Helis Foundation Enrique Alferez Sculpture Garden at the entrance to the Botanical Garden and Storyland. David Kerstein represented The Helis Foundation as the Guest of Honor. Honored Guest Dr. Tlaloc Alferez also attended. Dessa Giffin and Edmund Redd served as Chairpersons. Chef Susan Spicer created the outstanding passed hors d'oeuvres and three-course dinner menu. Sarah Young and committee decorated each table with vases of lavender and pale peach roses, white hydrangeas, ranunculus, tulips and pink freesia alongside white votives and ferns from the shade garden to amplify the garden theme. The live auction, led by Bryan Batt, included an Enrique Alferez reproduction of a bas-relief and 13 silent auction prizes and packages. Vacations to Vail, Napa and North Carolina were hot items. n

Variations of LOVE

1

“LOVE in the Garden” included a cocktail competition with a heartfelt twist. By Shelby Simon

More than 1,200 patrons filled the Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden to support the live oak-dotted outdoor exhibit, which is free and open to the public daily. More than 60 of New Orleans’ favorite restaurants served their best dishes during the evening. At the late-night party, food trucks provided fresh treats. Throughout the event, music and entertainment was provided by Helen Gillet, Mojeaux and DJ Jubilee. The evening also featured the LOVE Cocktail Challenge, featuring eight craft cocktails from celebrated bartenders. Each bartender created a drink inspired by a variation of LOVE: Love/Hate, Unconditional Love, Lust or Unrequited Love. The challengers included Abigail Diedre Gullo of Compère Lapin, Paul Gustings of Broussard's, Chris Hannah of Arnaud's French 75, Chris McMillian of Kingfish, T. The Parkway Partners Board of Directors proudly selected Jared Zeller and Michael Karam as the 2015 recipients of the Green Spirit Award, an annual award given to an individual who exhibits tireless energy in supporting the improvement of New Orleans’ green spaces and the city’s appearance. A Patron Party preceeded the event at the home of Cathy and Mark McRae, where Karam and Zeller received their award, designed by glass artist Eric Hess. One hundred ninety-two guests attended the main event, chaired by Kristi Trail and husband Blake Heymann and Norma Grace with husband Bob Sternhell. Auction Chairs included Donna D’Antoni and Josie Boynton. Margaret Orr was the emcee for the main program, recognizing the current and past recipients of the Green Spirit Award and encouraging guests to plant trees this fall. The Messy Cookers Jazz Band greeted guests as they arrived and in the main room. Denise Gerarve led The Pussyfooters dance troupe, which enlivened the crowd to make donations towards planting trees. Actor Sean Patterson sang “It’s Not Easy Being Green.” Eleven restaurants provided cuisine, along with a host of libations including a sparkling peach and mint vodka cocktail created by Parkway Partners staff member Susannah Burley. Food critic Tom Fitzmorris created a buzz around the food tables. Auction highlights included Orpheus parade packages, a saltwater fishing trip, Jazz Fest tickets and a two-night stay at Windsor Court. Proceeds from this event fund Parkway Partners’ ongoing efforts to plant trees, support community gardeners and schoolyard gardens. Going Pink

Breastoration and Galatoire’s teamed up to promote breast cancer awareness. By Shelby Simon

Pink lights and pink floral linens decked the dining rooms of Galatoire’s on October 5th for a Breastoration event marking the beginning of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Speakers from the Center for Restorative Breast Surgery and the Cancer Association of Greater New Orleans' Chairman Wendy Vitter delivered remarks. Breastoration Co-Chairs were Kim Sport and Barbara Turner Windhorst. 145 patrons attended the event. Galatoire’s delivered an expected exemplary four-course meal. The menu included a first course of shrimp and okra gumbo, a second course of sautéed Gulf fish du jour on a bed of sautéed spinach and a third course of filet bonne femme with bacon and caramelized onions; a caramel cup custard with fresh berries was served as the dessert course. The Breastoration Fund was created by breast cancer survivors Sandy Keller, Eve Wallinga and Kim Sport to help breast cancer patients access treatment for breast reconstruction following surgical mastectomies. The survivor-founders placed the fund under the Cancer Association of Greater New Orleans, which has served 13 parishes in Southeast Louisiana since 1958. n

A festive night of tango dancing benefited educational programs for Casa Argentina. By Shelby Simon

Casa Argentina hosted a spectacular tango show to provide funds for the organization’s philanthropic goals, emphasizing the educational programs for underserved Latino youth. Dimmed clear and colorful spotlights created an intimate yet festive atmosphere. Tango dancers led by the Hermanos Macana kept everyone mesmerized with the entire show and included a few lighthearted jokes to keep guests laughing. A stand-out number included Argentine folklore that evoked enthusiastic applause. The New Orleans Downtown Marriott provided a hearty dinner with Latin flavors, paired with Argentine malbec and white wines and rounded out with a piña colada flan for dessert. Following dinner, the band Julio & Cesar performed Latin music that encouraged partygoers to fill the dance floor and tango all evening. The second annual “Wine, Dine & Design” tablescapes luncheon benefited Operation Homefront. By Shelby Simon

A fleet of 24 over-the-top tablescapes brightened the Audubon Tea Room on Friday, October 9, for the second annual “Wine, Dine & Design” tablescapes luncheon. St. Charles Avenue and its parent company, Renaissance Publishing LLC, together with presenting sponsor Whitney Bank, presented a check for more than $46,000 to Operation Homefront, a national nonprofit that provides emergency financial and other assistance to military families and wounded warriors. Retailers and designers created the 24 tables, each with a diverse theme and design elements ranging from the classically elegant to whimsical and Louisiana-inspired. At the Preview Party on the previous day, Thursday, October 8, nearly 200 guests circled the room for a closer look at the eye-catching table designs while sipping wine and champagne and dining on hors d’oeuvres by the Audubon Tea Room’s catering team. For the Friday luncheon, almost 250 guests dined and sipped among the spectacular displays while learning more about Operation Homefront. A surprise auction of a live painting of the luncheon, created by artist Christopher Turner and emceed by Editor Morgan Packard, raised an additional $2,000. Erica and James Reiss and Marley and Michael LeBourgeois served as Chairs. Committee Members included: Megan Beer; Elizabeth and Peyton Bush; Mathlide and Richard Currence; Celeste and Curtis Eustis; Sarah and Greg Feirn; Helen and Scott Jenkins; and Rob Reiss. Consider Resolutions, Achieve Results Health, Beauty & Wellness in the New Year By Kelcy Wilburn • Photos by Cheryl Gerber

Wild Lotus Yoga

There are two types of people in the world: Those who make New Year’s resolutions, and those who can’t wait for the resolution questions to diminish with time. Whether your yearly routine is to march gung-ho towards new goals or to quietly consider changing your lifestyle – or even to not make a change at all – January does present a clean slate with a new year and an opportunity to take a new lease on life with a fresh attitude. So much of our attitude is dependent on health and overall wellness, which makes this month a perfect time to check in on just that. Local experts in health, beauty and wellness offer insights into various aspects of our presentation and lifestyle choices, from dietary choices, exercise and medical care to skin brightening creams, moisturizers and treatments for looking as young as you feel.

Start With Your Diet Nutrition and dietary changes, along with exercise, often top the resolution list, and Touro wants to help the community achieve weight loss goals in a few different ways. On January 7, Touro offers “Weight Management: Diet Trends and Goal Setting,” a free event from 5:30-7:30 p.m. that includes weight, BMI and body mass screenings as well as a five-minute consultation with a dietitian. The website Touro.com/events offers a complete list of upcoming events while the Touro blog, Living Well (Touro.com/LivingWell), offers timely health information. Julie Fortenberry, RD, LDN, Wellness and Lifestyle Nutritionist with Touro Infirmary, stresses the importance of preparing oneself for setbacks: “Know yourself and your limits. Give yourself some (but not unlimited) slack. The key is finding the balance that works for you.” According to Fortenberry, the first step in making a change

is being aware of your habits – knowing what you eat and when you eat it. She stresses eating “real food” – not from a box or package – at least once a day and getting quality sleep, which can be just as important as eating well and exercising. “Nutrition plays a huge role in lowering cholesterol levels, controlling blood pressure and diabetes and maintaining or losing weight,” says Fortenberry. “By seeking a trained professional to work on a plan that fits your needs, you can ensure you are doing what is personally best for you.” In addition to a nutritionist, there’s another trained professional that many people today overlook as part of their healthcare regimen. In today’s world of available urgent cares, many people forget the importance of a primary care physician. At CrescentCare, one of the city’s newest Federally Qualified Health Centers, primary care services are key in providing quality care.

About Face

Athleta

According to Marketing and Public Relations Specialist Jacob Windham, not only is primary care the frontline of diagnosis, it builds a necessary relationship between patient and physician for appropriate care consistent with patient needs. Windham suggests that people looking to make dietary changes and those taking exercise supplements should check in with their primary care physician regarding any long-term or short-term medications they are on and any possible side effects they may experience. “Open enrollment ends on January 31, and we have

46

st. charles Avenue January 2016

employees ready to assist anyone through the online enrollment process at our CrescentCare Health and Wellness Center,” he says. Aside from dietary changes, getting fit and quitting smoking are also top resolutions, and Ochsner Health System offers solutions for both. Smoking presents innumerable health risks, and Ochsner offers a comprehensive smoking cessation program for those smokers who want to kick the habit. The program is free for anyone who qualifies through the Smoking Cessation Trust (Ochsner.org/StopSmoking).

Work On Your Workout Across five locations, Ochsner’s Elmood Fitness Centers host a variety of programs to help people reach fitness goals. In addition to both high intensity and low intensity group classes (everything from Olympic Strength & Speed to Water Aerobics), Elmwood Fitness also offers personal training. “Personal training is typically done in a one-on-one setting and is tailored to the client’s specific goals and needs. Personal training can also be offered in a group setting and through programs such as biggest loser,

holiday fitness camps, weight loss camp, boot camp, and our new addition in January, ‘New Year Fitness Challenge,’” says Colin Brunet, NCCPT and Personal Training Coordinator. There are a lot of factors to consider when choosing a fitness routine that is right for you, and if you have questions about a certain program or practice, don’t be afraid to ask. Yoga is one practice (with many styles and levels) that people often find intimidating, but according to AC Lambeth, Certified Yoga Instructor at Wild Lotus Yoga, essentially, if you can breathe, you can do it. “The great thing about yoga is that it meets you where you are. People at any age and at any level of fitness can start a yoga practice. You don’t have to wait until you’ve lost weight or become flexible or learned a specific move,” says Lambeth. “Most of all, yoga is versatile; you can start it anytime, do it anywhere and practice it for life.” Part of what makes yoga such a popular practice is its range of benefits: greater strength, increased flexibility, lower blood pressure, increased self esteem, significant improvement in circulation, balance, digestion, sleep, immunity, metabolism and overall vitality, as well as a reduction of stress, anxiety and depression. “There are many different styles of yoga, and the best way to know which is for you is to talk to the studio staff, tell them what you’re looking for from a yoga practice and inform them of any health issues you have,” says Lambeth. Nothing quite helps you get motivated to look good like looking good while you work out, and active area women will be happy to hear that premier fitness apparel brand Athleta has arrived in the metro area. Now inside of Lakeside Shopping Center, Athleta’s 3,300-square-foot store will offer free in-store fitness

classes, complimentary hemming and fit styling appointments. “With female athletes as its designers, Athleta creates versatile and fashionable performance and lifestyle apparel for the fitnessminded woman who lives life on the go,” says Andrea Hicklin, Senior Manager of PR. “Athleta offers apparel and gear for a range of activities from yoga and spin to strength training and running, as well as seasonal sports, including ski and tennis,” she says. Specific to yoga, Hicklin is excited about their product offerings, including the high-rise bottoms: “They offer a triple dose of performance – keeps everything tucked in, has your ‘down dog’ covered and offers a super slimming, stay-put fit.”

Treating the Cosmetic While slimming down or toning up are obvious tactics for looking and feeling good, there are also a number of cosmetic improvements one can make, whether it be through simply exfoliating and moisturizing skin, or by undergoing treatments to improve skin health or to improve problem areas that are stubborn or difficult to fix on your own. At About Face of New Orleans clients typically want to see major results, so their most popular products and services are serums and chemical peels, which, according to Licensed Esthetician Jaime Schultz, are the ideal plan of attack against hyperpigmentation, acne, fine lines and skin in need of a smoother texture. About Face of New Orleans offers a variety of products, and Schultz’s current favorite is the luxury line Cyto-luxe. “The cleanser is creamy, has an amazing lather and has lactic acid, which makes it mildly exfoliating. Their eye cream is heaven! It will increase collagen and elastin, which means smooth, even skin around

your eyes,” says Schultz. Her biggest recommendation, though, is the Hydration + Serum, which she suggests can benefit everyone. “This serum has two forms of hyaluronic acid in it. This ingredient holds 1000x its weight in water. It pulls moisture from the air into the skin,” says Schultz. New in 2016, About Face of New Orleans will begin offering dermaplaning, a procedure for exfoliating the skin and removing “peach fuzz.” Healthy skin is also the focus of at Audubon Dermatology, where Drs. Deidre Hooper and Sarah Jackson continue to expand offerings with the new Cutera Enlighten laser, the first-ever dual wavelength laser that treats stubborn discoloration and unwanted tattoos from any skin type with minimal pain. Also at Audubon Dermatology, CoolSculpting is a popular procedure for removing fat. The procedure doesn’t shrink fat cells (like dieting) but rather freezes them, causing them to disappear for good. “A good candidate for CoolSculpting is someone who wants to treat that stubborn area of fat that they can’t seem to lose. If you can pinch it, we can freeze it,” says Dr. Hooper. “CoolSculpting uses controlled cooling technology to safely target and freeze fat cells, which are then naturally eliminated through your body’s lymphatic system. Results from CoolSculpting can be seen as soon as three weeks after treatment, with the most dramatic results seen two to three months after treatment,” she says. Other ways of securing dramatic results include surgical options as well as minimally or non-invasive procedures, which are the expertise of Dr. Stephen E. Metzinger of Aesthetic Surgical Associates. Sought for his experience in breast augmentation, rhinoplasty, eyelid surgery, facelifts and tummy tucks, Dr. Metzinger also offers a number

Aesthetic Surgical

of non-invasive treatments and procedures such as Botox, fillers such as Juvederm and Radiesse, lasers, chemical peels and Ultherapy. For a non-invasive lift, Ulthera is an FDA-approved option for lifting the forehead, cheeks, lower eyelids and neck. “Good candidates for Ulthera are men and women age 21 to 100 who want subtle but effective muscle skin soft tissue envelope tightening with no downtime and minimal bruising and swelling,” says Dr. Metzinger. Aesthetic Surgical Associates is now offering Kybella, an injection to dissolve fat in the submental area (under the chin). According to Metzinger, when combined with Ulthera, the new a procedure produces a more immediate result. It is important to remember that results take time, no matter what improvements you pursue. Realistic expectations and goals are key to keeping your attitude fresh and making progress in your overall health and wellness. Whether you officially resolve to make the change or just know you need it, achieving results is completely within reach. n

Home Care Solutions

Aging Assistance Charting the steps on your family’s journey by Stephen Maloney

52

st. charles Avenue January 2016

In the past, the thought of assisted living brought images of dreary, dimly lit, hospitallike settings with endless craft time and slow motion checker games to mind. That isn’t the case anymore. Today’s assisted living facilities offer a wide variety of services tailored to individual needs. Memory loss, mobility issues, declining health or any combination of ailments affecting the elderly and aging population of the Greater New Orleans area can all be addressed at a number of local facilities in an endlessly customizable manner.

photos Court es y home care solutions

or loved ones of the elderly and aging, the initial steps of the journey to assisted living are never easy. Many elderly people are proudly self sufficient until a fall or sudden illness leaves them needing more than a simple helping hand. Others may go through a gradual decline that often includes memory loss or a diminishing mental state. Suddenly, attentive daughters, sons, spouses, family members and friends are cast into a situation where their love and care need to be supplemented by a healthcare professional.

Many aging people in need of assistance, wary of leaving their homes, take the first step toward assisted living by bringing healthcare providers into their homes. Analiza Schneider, a marketing representative for Home Care Solutions in Metairie, says the company’s team of care managers begins each interaction with new clients with an in-depth assessment. “Everyone here is very knowledgeable of all the assisted living facilities that we have in the area,” she says. “After making an assessment, our care managers will go to the different facilities with whoever is making the and show them the options. If they choose to stay home, our sitters will go to the patient’s home and care for them there.” The level of care provided in the home is tailored to each person’s needs, ranging from two or three hours per day to a 24-hour basis. The care managers will go to doctor’s appointments to act as a go-between for family members, who are often in varying states of shock and panic. “Sometimes people don’t plan for elder care,” Schneider says. “So Mom or Dad falls or goes to the hospital for whatever reason, and all of the sudden the family has to make these huge decisions – these huge financial decisions. That’s when our aging life care managers can really be helpful.” The first step may be to help loved ones advocate for the elder patient, but longterm care is always a priority. Staying at home to receive health care can be a great fit for some, and may serve as a stopgap measure for others, Schneider says. Many Home Care Solutions patients and care managers are in and out of assisted living facilities every day, she says, from Vista Shores to Lambeth House, Poydras Home to Hainkel Home and many more. Kimberly Dixon, Director of Business Development for Gifted Healthcare, says the company’s over 500 caregivers regularly straddle the line between home healthcare and assisted living facilities. “I’ve seen a trend where most people are opting to stay home,” Dixon says. “As the population of baby boomers get older, there has been growth in the assisted living community, but I think more people are wanting to stay because they value being home rather than moving all of their stuff to another place. They want to be where they’re familiar.”

Vista Shores

Poydras Home

For patients with memory disorders or debilitating health problems, assisted living is usually the best case, Dixon says, but it all depends on the individual’s situation. “Our services are customized toward what the patient is looking for and not where they are,” she says. For many of the 80 residents at the Vista Shores assisted living facility on the banks of Bayou St. John, their time spent at the facilities stretches back to when the sprawling building was a country club decades ago. “A lot of the residents of Vista Shores were members of the country club back in their heyday, so it kind of feels like home to them,” marketing and media manager Alex Pence Guererri says. Vista Shores, like many facilities owned by Schonberg & Associates, focuses on memory care and long-term assistance, Guererri says. “It’s really an aging in place type of community,” she says. “A lot of the residents are still independent enough that they drive and go on trips and things like that, but they just really love having help close by.”

The facilities are divided up into neighborhoods, each with its own character and features. Food is served in gourmet restaurantstyle settings, rather than a cafeteria, which Guererri says is a very attractive feature for residents and staff alike. But creature comforts are only part of the equation. “We have a very distinguished memory care program,” she says. “We were recently awarded the Dementia Care Specialist Distinguished Provider Award, which is a national award that recognizes communities that are exceptional in providing person-centered memory care.” With more and more of the aging population requiring some degree of memory care assistance, a personalized level of service is an essential part of life for many residents. “A lot of people who originally go in for assisted living end up needing memory care within a few years,” Guererri says. Faith Camet Caluda, Director of Assisted Living at the Poydras Home’s Oak House Assisted Living facility, says the growing need for memory care assistance led to the creation of Oak House in 2013.

“With the increasing aging population and more advanced diagnostic tests, more and more of the elderly population is being appropriately diagnosed with some form of memory impairment,” Caluda says. “Memory support is definitely a very important area.” Poydras Home marketing coordinator Jennifer Brammell says the addition of Oak House in response to that growing need helped transform Poydras Home into a continuing care retirement community. “A secure memory care area within an assisted living facility is a nice choice for family members to navigate that part of the disease process,” Brammell says. “It’s a big reason that people seek a residential environment.” With 33 assisted living suites, 11 of which are in the memory support division, Poydras Home serves a variety of residents, some of who are married couples. For Christine Vinson, owner of Vinson Guard Service, transitioning her father to Poydras Home’s nursing care area wasn’t an easy decision, but it quickly proved to be the right one. “When first looking for a residence for Dad, we were looking for the best care to assist him and our needs,”Vinson says. “After moving Dad into Poydras Home, the convenient location was a huge plus. Just being 15 minutes away from home and 10 minutes from my work gave us ease and comfort.” After settling one parent into Poydras Home,Vinson soon realized that her mother would be best served moving into the Oak House assisted living facility. “Even though they lived in separate sections, it allowed Mom independence while providing her a closeness with Dad she didn’t have while living apart,”Vinson says. “It also helped Mom feel more involved in Dad’s care since she was on campus, and staff would continuously give her updates on his day while she participated in her own activities.” After her father passed away, another aspect of the Poydras Home community emerged. “[Being at Poydras Home] has helped mom through her grieving process,”Vinson says. “She has been provided an immediate support group.” At all phases of care and with services catered to every health and living situation, elder care in the Greater New Orleans area has evolved to fit the needs of every aging resident, bringing untold relief and peace of mind to countless local families. n

PERSONAL INJURY GENERAL: PLAINTIFF Kea Sherman represents clients in matters involving personal injury, wrongful death, premises liability, environmental contamination, toxic torts and commercial disputes. Additionally, Sherman acts as general counsel to several businesses involved in the entertainment and hospitality industries. Sherman began her legal career defending health-care and professional negligence claims. She later joined an insurance defense firm, which offered her the opportunity to expand her areas of practice. During her time as defense counsel, Sherman represented numerous insurance companies, which provided her with valuable insight into the insurance claims process. This was an eye-opening experience that deeply affected her and it ultimately altered the course of her practice. In 2009, Sherman founded the Sherman Law Firm, where she tirelessly fights for the rights of individuals and small-business owners.

A Reel Fun Time A girls’ night out at the Theatres at Canal Place by Bev Church

Carla Adams decided to have a girls’ night out

70 st. charles Avenue January 2016

After cocktails, we all moved into the theatre for dinner, which was served buffet-style. We brought tablecloths and flowers to decorate, but you really don't have to do anything – Canal Place Theatres does it all and for a very affordable price. The menu included: a salumi and cheese platter, pork sliders; mushroom tartlettes; chicken salad; and Caprese bites, along with white and red wines. Bradley Cooper was great in the film and we were all home by 10 p.m. after chattering away after the movie. Thanks to manager Steven Marlin for helping us to coordinate the whole night; he says that if you're interested in throwing your own movie night to call 229-4251. It was such fun! n

movie party at Canal Place and invited 17 friends to see Burnt starring Bradley Cooper! Of course we wanted Steven Putt as the only male invited – he’s the King of Canal Place! Everyone was invited by evite for a Tuesday night and arrived at 6 p.m. for specialty drinks at the bar. Cocktail tables were set up, and I added my single Celebration Centerpieces: peppers filled with lilies, gerbera daisies and lisianthus. Tomatoes on the vine scattered about à la the theme. Gourmet popcorn was served. I painted wine glasses for everyone with their names on them so they had a favor to take home.

Reily – Grace By Mallory Lindsly

Kelly Baltar Reily and Robert Downman Grace knew each other as family friends their whole lives. They were always very flirty growing up, but Robert – being a few years older – and Kelly never dated until she moved back to New Orleans. The two were hanging out together as usual when all of a sudden something clicked, and their first date was at Sylvain on Halloween 2012. The two had just bought a house together when Robert decorated the entryway and living room with candles, rose petals, and two glasses of champagne. When Kelly came home, Robert asked for her hand in marriage. She of course said, “Yes!” The Graces held a rehearsal dinner at their St. Charles Avenue home to start off the weekend’s wedding festivities. Kelly and Robert wed on October 31, 2015, three years after their first date, at the Reilys' country home, Marshdown in Slidell. Wedding Coordinators Claudia Kelleher and Elizabeth Kelleher Roberts helped plan a

white wedding with florist Meade Wenzel so the décor didn’t take on a Halloween vibe. Harry Hardin played the ceremony music. John Besh catered the reception, and guests danced throughout the evening to Party on the Moon while photographer Greer G Photographer and videographer Bride Film captured all of the special moments. The wedding cake was made by Zoë’s Bakery, while the groom’s cake was made Leah Michael. To commemorate that it was Halloween, friends and family were able to fill little gift bags with candy from a candy bar. The gift bags said, “Our night wouldn’t be complete without saying trick or treat!” The two honeymooned in the French Polynesia Islands of Morrea and Bora Bora for nine days. They are currently living in and renovating their New Orleans home, where Kelly is a first grade teacher at Sacred Heart and Robert is a Medical Equipment Sales with Pro Spine. n

JohnMichael Johnson Project Leader & Coordinator, Financial Peace University by Lindsay Mack

Young Leadership Council’s Financial Peace University teaches New Orleanians how to manage their personal finances. By instructing students to beat debt, build wealth and invest for the future, the classes help participants achieve real results. Ultimately, many students are able to use their better financial standing to reinvest in the community. Class to Leader

After going through the class, John-Michael Johnson was so impressed with the program that he volunteered to take over as project leader. He stresses the importance of providing financial literacy for everyone in the community. “It’s very simple stuff that’s just not taught anymore in high school or even at home. So many people who have good educations and don’t know these things,” he says. What Classes Entail

74 st. charles Avenue January 2016

The Take Away Johnson adds that the program isn’t just for young professionals, but also for anyone in the community who may need help balancing personal finances. In fact, his goal now is to reach high school and college students, a huge demographic that

generally needs better financial information. “If we could get 10 percent of kids under 18 in New Orleans to learn this and apply it for the rest of their lives,” Johnson says, “you’ll have huge results that will only make this city better.”

Once students achieve more solid financial standing, he says, they enjoy peace of mind and empowerment. Overall, the program gives people the tools to manage finances correctly so they can help others as well.

photos by cheryl gerbe r

Each class group consists of nine sessions, and each session follows a standard format. Students have dinner, take part in a lesson and review, and then have a discussion. Socializing is also a big part of the classes, and by sharing their financial backgrounds – and sometimes even horror stories – students can learn from each other’s experiences. To date, the program has served over 100 students through the classes. Johnson also noted that most participants, even those struggling with student debt, eventually begin to see the light at the end of the tunnel. By giving them the tools to succeed, the program helps many young New Orleanians achieve fiscal stability. Laura McDonald Lusher Charter School by Mallory Lindsly

photos by cheryl gerber

“It is important to be involved in your community because without involvement, a community doesn’t exist,” says Laura McDonald, a senior at Lusher Charter School. After participating in the 4-H Citizen Washington Focus event, a weeklong conference in Washington D.C., a couple of students at Lusher, including McDonald, came up with the idea of an afterschool program to teach life skills to elementary students. Lions and Cubs is an afterschool mentoring program at Lusher elementary school where high school students teach life skills to third, fourth and fifth graders. The skills taught include anti-bullying, service, study skills, fitness, independent thinking, nutrition and Project Pride rules. “I’ve learned copious amounts about teaching, planning and communication, including consistency and clarity in communication, inclusion of students in a classroom, the techniques used to educate kids and how to plan events out over time,” says McDonald. After spending her junior year getting high-schoolers to

volunteer for the program, Lions and Cubs was implemented in October 2015; McDonald taught 20 girls about a life skills. “This experience is so important to me because I get to help kids gain skills needed to be successful leaders. I get to talk to these kids and hear their opinions, which I find so inspiring,” says McDonald. Matt Holt, McDonald’s former Trinity Episcopal Church youth group leader, inspired her to become an activist. Holt was active in the New Orleans community by organizing service projects for the youth group to feed the homeless through Mobile Loaves and Fishes. Holt showed McDonald what it means to be involved in the community. “By being involved in your community, you get to make a change that helps the community, and you personally get to see change happen, which is an invaluable experience.” McDonald is involved in many organizations, both at Lusher and within her community; she also participates in the Certificate of Artistry Dance program, which allows her to study dance on a daily basis. She is the president of the National Honor Society and Lusher’s 4-H Club, and the secretary of Lusher’s Culture Club. She also is a Student Ambassador and volunteered at Touro Hospital. McDonald isn’t exactly sure where she’s going to college next year, but she is interested in studying healthcare, mathematics or nonprofit business. n stcharlesAvenue.com 75

Jennifer Atkins Co-Owner, Peony by Mirella Cameran

How did you start Peony? I and my business partner and friend, Cricket Lapeyre, started our children’s line Peony two years ago. We saw a gap in the market for heirloom-quality clothing, based on our mothers’ and grandmothers’ patterns, hand-sewed with a modern simplicity. This year after traveling in Europe, we decided to open a concept store with art and travel as our muse. What’s the response been like? Amazing! We have multiple generations of clients. We have clothing and gifts for babies to grandmothers. It’s been a real joy seeing local families come in and also meeting so many tourists from all over the world.

It is a magical place. We have things you can’t find elsewhere, and we want everyone to enjoy their visit. You can even text me on your way home and we can wrap, charge and run your purchase out to your car! 76 st. charles Avenue January 2016

Jewelry by Deepa Guenani, Kork-ease Shoes and fur for everyone. What are you most excited about in the store? I really like how the store evolves, with things changing daily. We love the fact that locals and tourists feel comfortable stopping by and staying for a glass of champagne if they have time. We are very lucky to be part of this fabulous city. n Peony 2240 Magazine St. Suite 102 300-7908 PeonyNola.com

Susan Zackin Owner, Z Event Company by Mirella Cameran

How did you start your company? I was ready to move back to New Orleans, and my friends and family encouraged me to bring my unique event planning and design experience from Palm Beach, Florida, to the city. What’s different about Z Event Company? I began my career as an interior designer, so I have an especially good sense of spatial relations and design; I’m also super organized.

photo by jeff ery john ston

Tell us about some of your favorite events? There have been so many! Stunning society weddings, creative debutante parties and fundraisers for the likes of The American Red Cross of Louisiana. Securing Hoda Kotb as the Keynote Speaker for The Tiffany Circle Women was definitely a high point. What’s the best party you’ve ever produced? All of them! I am partial to my oldest stepson’s wedding. I did the planning and design, but

he stole the show with a shoebox of anniversary cards, one to be opened by his wife for the next 50 years. Can you tell us any trade secrets? The best parties start with a great guest list and a host or hostess who wants everyone to have the best time possible. The rest of the details just make it that much better. Can you give us three party tips? • Make a timeline for set up and know things will take longer than expected. • Try to prepare things ahead of the big day; you don’t want to be too tired to enjoy yourself. • Enlist someone in advance to take photographs. n

Beer Me Jax Brewery’s legendary promotions by Seale Paterson

88 st. charles Avenue January 2016

Over the following decades, Jax Beer’s promotions became the stuff of legend. The 1940s brought the Jax Girls, a female softball team comprised of Jax Brewing employees. The Jax Girls were very popular – and very good. They drew huge crowds everywhere they played, from California to Chicago to Canada, and won seven national softball championships between 1942 and 1949 before disbanding. The Jax Beer Jambalaya Golf Carnival at City Park was held in 1952 and 1953. A “strictly fun” tournament, it included lots of trick shots (like hitting a ball out of a bathtub) and costume contest

prizes. Mayor Chep Morrison, “who set out in a natty white suit and came in bedraggled but good-natured,” won two awards in 1953: “Best Dressed Player on Tee” and “Golfer Who Came in with the Most Soiled Clothing.” One of the most popular promotions was the “Golden Gill” contest, in which fish from Lake Pontchartrain, Audubon and City Park lagoons and Bayou St. John were caught, tagged and released back into the water. These tags noted dollar amounts, and whoever caught the fish could trade the fish in at the Brewery and receive the monetary amount, from $50-500 (and one $10,000 prize that was never caught). The

A Bob Powers sign board display in 1957 features Jax Beer and crudités. Other print ads in the 1950s – in newspapers and printed on the six-can boxes of Jax Beer – included recipes to be made with Jax Beer, including Barbecued Chicken with Gulf Coast Sauce as well as Jaxburgers (hamburger meat mixed with Jax Beer). They often included a handy shopping list, with Jax Beer at the top of the list.

contest ran for three years (19571959), and there were many happy winners. After a few changes in ownership, and increased competition from national brands with larger budgets, Jax Brewing went out of business in 1974. n

The Jackson Brewing Company, named for its proximity to Jackson Square, opened in 1891 and was one of about 30 breweries serving New Orleans. While most breweries closed during Prohibition (1919-1933), their production of soft drinks and a near-beer (.5 percent alcohol) kept them in business. As Prohibition was appealed, ads and promotions for Jax Beer started appearing regularly. Purchase of a new refrigerator would include a free case of Jax Beer, “as soon as it’s legal.” Other ads reminded people to ask for “good old Jax, with its old-time vigor and life” (and 4 percent alcohol content).
