Bon Temps Returns
It’s Carnival time y’all! And in the spirit of celebrating the wonder of this region’s indomitable imagination and artistry, we thought it was the perfect chance to highlight a local company that’s rich in both and happens to be celebrating a huge win.
The buzz in the animation and comic book industries has been strong since news broke this past fall that Jefferson Parish-based Swaybox Studios will be showcasing its groundbreaking mix of animation and puppetry in a feature film for DC Studios. The film will focus on the origin stories of two versions of Batman’s famed sidekick, Robin.
New Orleans has long been a city that has inspired creativity, and it’s so exciting to see that continue into new mediums. In a city that operates differently, sees things differently and encourages others to do the same, Swaybox is continuing that legacy into a new space. What an incredible partnership for the company’s first feature film!
Other can’t-miss features of this issue include our “Why Didn’t I Think of That?” for February, which takes a peek at a shop called Keep It In the Culture, which is dedicated to making sure our culture bearers have an affordable means to obtain the goods they need to bring Carnival to life.
Tax time is creeping up again, and if you are a Louisiana business owner who would love to ensure your tax bill goes to support our region’s future while benefiting its workforce now, this month’s Guest Perspective shares an opportunity you don’t want to miss.
Finally, I encourage you to check out the Real Estate Perspective, where our new Associate News Editor Kelly Hite digs into how the global coworking craze has impacted our region and the benefits these spaces are offering to both local freelancers and business owners.
As we prepare ourselves for a busy month — leaning maybe more toward fun than work — I hope that everyone has a Carnival season that fills their plastic cup to the brim with happy memories. For me, that will involve parading again in a ginormous blonde wig with the Krewe of Dolly and getting to watch my toddler up on my husband’s shoulders kicking on the charm to get those throws!
Thanks for reading and Happy Mardi Gras!

Happy Super Carnival!
This is our month to shine as we welcome the NFL to New Orleans for Super Bowl LIX. I know we have been preparing for months, and the date is finally here to show off our city to the world.
In May 2024, Gov. Landry made a wise decision to tap into Michael Hecht’s leadership to coordinate all the efforts of the city, the Super Bowl Host Committee, the New Orleans Sports Foundation and many other groups to make sure New Orleans was ready. His team has been stellar, and the citizens of New Orleans should be proud of the work that has been done. Thank you.
Also happening this month, just two days after the Super Bowl, Jefferson Parish will celebrate its bicentennial. Parish President Cynthia Lee Sheng and a host of volunteers are planning year-long events to highlight the parish and its rich history and accomplishments made over the past 200 years. The big Bicentennial Ball is being held at Lakeside Shopping Center — which is also celebrating its 65th anniversary this year — on June 14.
Speaking of big events, you do not want to miss New Orleans Go Red for Women, the American Heart Association’s luncheon on Feb. 14 at the Hyatt Regency. What a great way to
celebrate Valentine’s Day and raise money for a worthy cause.
We end February with Carnival in high gear, including Family Gras in Jefferson Parish Feb. 21-23 and the big second weekend of super parades in New Orleans.
This will be a month to celebrate in so many ways, so before we celebrate in New Orleans, I am heading out of town for the baptism of our newest (fifth) granddaughter, Annie. The whole family is traveling to California for a great weekend and it makes my heart swell with love.
I ask you — how do we get any work done? Enjoy.

Faith, Love and King Cake
Covington’s Tournesol Bakery offers both French pastry favorites and delicacies inspired by the owners El Salvadoran heritage
BY POPPY TOOKER
Carlos Sanchez of Tournesol Bakery in Covington is proof that the American dream is still alive and attainable today.
Sanchez fled El Salvador’s brutal civil war in 1990, settling in Los Angeles with the help of an older sister who lived there. Although he had been studying civil engineering in El Salvador, he was forced to take a dishwashing job due to his lack of English. However, the bright, ambitious young man quickly began to acquire cooking and baking skills to get ahead. He eventually married and started a family.
When his son was 2 years old, Sanchez’s young wife was diagnosed with lymphoma. In less than a year she was gone.
A move to New Orleans brought a muchneeded change. For four years, Sanchez worked in construction, but the girlfriend who would become his wife, Linda, knew his real love was baking.
Unbeknownst to Sanchez, Linda submitted his resume to Chef Dominique Rizzo at La Boulangerie who hired him immediately. Working alongside Rizzo, making baguettes and
croissants, Sanchez knew he was learning how to craft the very best.
When Rizzo sold La Boulangerie to Donald Link, Sanchez became an important part of Chef Maggie Scales’ new team there. Sanchez’s skills were lauded by the Southern Food and Beverage Museum when he competed and won first place for Best Baguette in 2017 and Best Croissant in 2018.
Sanchez and Linda married, adding another son and a daughter to the mix. When Linda was hired to teach Spanish in a Northshore middle school, they fell in love with the St. Tammany Parish lifestyle and relocated.
Although Sanchez continued to work on the Southshore, a new dream had begun to blossom in their hearts — a bakery and café of their own.
When the perfect location in downtown Covington became available, the two fearlessly cashed in retirement savings, borrowing what they could to make their dream a reality. Even the pandemic didn’t stop them.
“I am not a person who gives up,” said Sanchez. “If I can walk and move my hands and have the strength, I will succeed. There is no other choice.”
Tournesol Café and Bakery opened on South Tyler Street in June 2020, giving Covington a new place to gather. Named for Linda Sanchez’s favorite sunflowers, the bright sunny café is open from 7 a.m. until 5 p.m. on weekdays providing a perfect spot for early morning business meetings, intimate lunches and an ideal after-school hangout for high school crowds.
“It makes me happy to know parents are comfortable having their kids here,” Sanchez said.
Along with classic French pastries, in a nod to his El Salvadoran heritage, Sanchez also serves hand pies filled with beef or guava and cream cheese and a remarkable tres leches cake. Just as for every South Louisiana bakery, king cakes also play an important role. Utilizing his award-winning croissant dough, Sanchez created a babkastyle twist with cinnamon filling, topped with purple, green and gold sugar. Just as he learned from Dominique Rizzo at La Boulangerie, he also offers an authentic French galette de rois (French king cake) with a real feve and a porcelain baby instead of the typical plastic favor.
Tournesol’s challah is popular for Friday Sabbath dinners — a fact that prompted a local rabbi to come calling for unleavened bread. Sanchez proceeded to craft more than 200 pita-style breads for the rabbi’s congregation to enjoy with lamb for Passover.
Sanchez himself is a man of great faith. As a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church, he keeps Sabbath by closing Tournesol on Saturdays, something most modern business owners might eschew.
Catch Poppy Tooker on her radio show, “Louisiana Eats!” Saturdays at 3 p.m. and Mondays at 8 p.m. on WWNO 89.9 FM.
“I have some employees who ask for Sunday off so they can go to church so I respect their faith too,” he said. “This is the beauty of the U.S.A. — you have freedom of religion. That’s what makes this nation so great. It’s entirely based on freedom.” T

Can It Get Worse for the Saints?
Dead money woes continue to hinder the Black and Gold
BY CHRIS PRICE
This month marks the 15th anniversary of the New Orleans Saints Super Bowl championship. Unfortunately, looking back is currently more inspiring than looking forward.
The Saints finished the 2024 season with a 5-12 record, placing them in last place in the NFC South division. The team finished 21st in the NFL in total offense, gaining an average of 320.1 yards and scoring 19.9 points per game, and 30th in total defense, giving up 379.9 yards and 23.4 points per game.
The season got off to a surprising start with the Saints stomping the Carolina Panthers 47-10, and Dallas Cowboys 44-19. A seven-game losing streak followed, which cost head coach Dennis Allen his job. Assistant head coach and special teams coordinator Darren Rizzi was named the interim head coach of the then 2-7 club in Week 10 but was only able to post a 3-5 record to finish the season.
Injuries plagued the team again in 2024 as several key players missed significant time, including quarterback Derek Carr, tight end Taysom Hill, center Erik McCoy, wide receivers Chris Olave and Rashid Shaheed, and corner back Paulson Adebo. Too many of those who were able to stay on the field looked like age
may have caught up with them as they appeared to have lost a step.
Often during the season, experts and fans argued that sentimental feelings and large contracts for older, big-name players and dead money going to players who were not on the roster and thus not contributing was a major factor in the team’s downward turn.
Although many think the roster needs a complete rebuild, the Saints are not in a position to invest in 2025. According to overthecap.com — a website that tracks NFL teams’ financial obligations — the Saints are $66.8 million over the salary cap entering the 2025 season, including $48.4 million in dead money going to players who are no longer on the team, including Marshon Lattimore ($31.6 million), Michael Thomas ($9.2 million), and Jameis Winston ($7.4 million).
SAINTS 2025 OPPONENTS
The Saints opponents for the 2025 season have been set; dates and times will be announced by the NFL at a later date.
To get under the league-mandated salary cap — which is projected to be $275 million in 2025 — the team will need to sign lesser quality or lesser-known players to fill the roster. In other words, except for the draft and reduced rookie contracts, the Saints will not be able to add much five- or four-star level talent and will have to rely on less talented players next year.
All of this does not bode well when it comes to the team’s chances for recruiting an up-andcoming head coaching prospect to the team, as several franchises in better financial situations are also looking for new leadership.
If there is good news, it is that the Saints will have the ninth overall pick in the 2025 draft and high choices in subsequent rounds. This is the highest the team has picked since 2008, and the 18th time in franchise history that they have had a top 10 pick.
Because of the team’s upside-down finances, it will be of utmost importance to draft players who can contribute immediately, especially on defense. Although he is currently owed $51.4 million next season, it is likely Carr will return as QB. If he is cut after June 1, he will free up $30 million, but the Saints will add $21.5 million in dead money to their tally. Unless they can draft a QB who can start on day one, it doesn’t make sense to let him go.
General Manager Mickey Loomis is garnering much, if not all, of the blame for the Saints’ current situation. It will be interesting to see if he retains his position. But be it Loomis or another GM, the Saints’ chances of climbing into the top half of the league in 2025, much less being a playoff team, look slim. T

IN THE BIZ ENTREPRENEUR
KEITH TWITCHELL spent 16 years running his own business before serving as president of the Committee for a Better New Orleans from 2004 through 2020. He has observed, supported and participated in entrepreneurial ventures at the street, neighborhood, nonprofit, micro- and macro-business levels.
Lessons From Abroad
The entrepreneurial spirit is alive in South Africa
BY KEITH TWITCHELL
One of the countless reasons to visit foreign countries is to observe each nation’s entrepreneurial customs and practices. My trip last fall to South Africa was an exceptional example of a truly unique ecosystem.
One caveat: I only went to the Western Cape province, one of nine provinces in the country, so I cannot claim that my observations apply to all of South Africa.
That said, it’s a beautiful area, full of friendly — and entrepreneurial — people. Cape Town is probably the most cosmopolitan city on the continent and like New Orleans in many ways, including having been governed at different times by two European nations.
The centerpiece of my trip was a wine tour. There are many hundreds of vineyards in South Africa, and while I didn’t get to quite all of them, there were some very impressive common threads among the ones I did visit. Most notably, every single winemaker emphasized that they did not view themselves as competing with the other wineries. Instead, they spoke of the indus-
try-wide collaboration focused on advancing South African wines on the world stage.
This “grow the pie” mentality is such a healthy approach to business — and so often lacking in our South Louisiana region. From manufacturing to water management, energy to tech, we have so many economic opportunities; yet repeatedly, our parochial, scarcity-based mindset holds us back. Entrepreneurism can absolutely be a shared activity, and everyone benefits when it is.
Another mantra I repeatedly heard was a commitment to bring more women and people of color into South African winemaking, which remains largely dominated by white men. There was a shared realization that the larger the talent pool, and the more diversified the talent, the stronger their industry would be. This is another example of their collaborative spirit, and again, is something that many local industries would do well to emulate.
The success of this collaborative approach is evidenced by South Africa’s growing share of the world wine market. While wine drinking globally is decreasing, consumption of South
African wines has reached record high levels, and the country now ranks eighth among the world’s wine-producing nations.
I experienced a very different type of entrepreneurship in the Khayelitsha township, home to over 1million Capetonians. Townships are, bluntly, the slums of South Africa, and from the outside, they appear to be imposing, impenetrable tangles of impoverished chaos.
Inside, however, you find another story. Yes, most of the structures are huts of corrugated tin and cardboard, but there are real houses as well. Yes, there are mazes of trails among these structures, but there are real roads too – most of them in better shape than New Orleans roads.
Most striking of all was the powerful sense of community in Khayelitsha, which definitely included an entrepreneurial component. The streets are lined with the same types of businesses you would see anywhere else – grocers, auto repairs, shoe stores, bakeries – all owned by local individuals. The storefronts too were mostly shacks, the signs were handmade, and I doubt there was a business license among them, but these were clearly viable operations and points of pride for their owners and customers alike.
City services in the township range from minimal to nonexistent, but the residents have taken things into their own hands. For example, all of Khayelitsha has electricity — wired throughout by the people, drawing from the power lines on the perimeter of the settlement. Is this theft or entrepreneurship? Given the local utility company’s complete disinterest in providing service within these communities, I would vote for the latter.
One commonality between the vineyards of Stellenbosch and the streets of Khayelitsha was that everyone I met was warm and welcoming. Another was that, in a country that has had a difficult past and many challenges in the present, optimism, community and entrepreneurial spirit were everywhere.T

Renovating Our “Front Porch”
Audubon’s “Riverfront For All” project moves toward an estimated completion date of next year.
BY JEREMY MARSHALL
Arevitalization of the historic Governor Nicholls and Esplanade wharves, adjacent to the French Quarter, is currently underway through the efforts of the Audubon Nature Institute.
The “Riverfront For All” Project will connect nearly 2.3 miles of continuous waterfront access to one of the largest continuous riverfront parks in the nation, extending from Crescent Park in the Bywater to Spanish Plaza at the base of Canal Street. This revitalized public attraction will create what former Audubon Nature Institute President and CEO Ron Forman affectionately refers to as a “front porch” for the city, a longstanding mission of the organization now near realization.
The project is now under the direction of Michael J. Sawaya, who officially stepped into the role of CEO — which Forman held for 50
years — at the beginning of the year. Sawaya is no stranger to the importance of a thriving tourism industry in New Orleans; in his former position as president/CEO of the New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center (ENMCC) he oversaw operations at the sixth-largest convention center in the country.
With the “Riverfront For All” Project, Sawaya knows the value of that distinct flavor New Orleans offers and hopes the new riverside development can bring visitors and locals together for leisure, culture and fun.
“Most communities only develop new attractions every 10 or 20 years or so,” said Sawaya. “We are working to make New Orleans unique in that regard through reinventing and reinvesting in the city to become a competitive, and authentic, world-class destination.”
The “Riverfront For All” project will connect people as well as neighborhoods, creating covered areas for concerts and community
events, and green spaces for recreation and leisure, all landscaped to fit right alongside the historic sights and sounds of the city.
“Audubon has had a strong relationship with the Port of New Orleans since 1990 and has been eager to help redevelop the space, to build a “front porch” for the city right on the Mississippi River,” explained Forman. “Basing our designs and inspirations on the Chicago Millennium Park and The High Line Park of New York City, we have plans to create a special place everyone, whether local or visiting, wants to experience for themselves.”
As detailed in Audubon Nature Institute’s plans, the project will feature a grand promenade that will connect Crescent Park and the historic Moon Walk. The proposed expansion will welcome visitors through The Wharves Plaza and Cultural Shed, a hub for social activities and community engagement. Further along, the Upriver Lawn and Play Grove will feature ornate walking paths, open seating, small pavilions and playscapes designed to accommodate holiday celebrations and festivals.
“For a long time, folks couldn’t see the river at all in the 1970s or 1980s because of the wharves,” noted Melissa Lee, vice president of communications at Audubon Nature Institute. “In the 1980s, the World’s Fair was part of an effort to connect people with the river, and those efforts continue today.”
Partnering with Broadmoor Construction, Audubon Nature Institute has begun work to waterproof the deck and wooden structure of the wharf itself while clearing away accumulated river debris as the permitting and approval processes are being finalized.
Demolition of the structures on the wharf is awaiting approval by the city’s Corps of Engineers. When approved — hopefully within the next month or two — work is primed to begin immediately, with the hope for a completion date in the third quarter of 2026.
“Our top priority is to keep our iconic city vital and to grow tourism,” said Forman, “Developing the riverfront gives us that opportunity to provide for locals and tourists to experience the genuine New Orleans together on the river.” T
DID YOU KNOW? In 2007, there were only 14 coworking spaces in the U.S. In 2017, there were 4,000. There are now more than 19,000.
LET’S GET TOGETHER

The Greenhouse accommodates those who want to cycle or walk to work, providing a seamless transition from outdoor activities to the indoor workspace.
Whether you’re a work-fromhome professional looking for a change of scenery or a business owner interested in cutting costs, coworking spaces hold a wide array of benefits — a fact that has led to their rapid rise.
In 2018, only 2.5% of commercial office space worldwide was classified as flexible workspace. That number has since grown at an annual rate of about 23% per year, leading real estate company JLL to estimate that by 2030 flexible workspaces will account for 30% of global commercial office space.
Part of this market disruption has been driven by the rise in entrepreneurship. The U.S. averaged 430,000 new business applications per month in 2024, 50% more than in 2019, according to the U.S. Department of the Treasury.
Southeast Louisiana is no exception to these trends. Most recently ranked in the top 10 cities for entrepreneurship in America in 2023 by Gusto.com (based on number of business applications per capita), it’s not surprising that the Greater New Orleans region boasts at least 25 co-working spaces.
“Our members are mostly entrepreneurs,” said Sarah Haviland, operations director of Common House, whose 420 Julia St. location in New Orleans opened in June 2024 and has already attracted more than 1,000 members.
Haviland noted that included in the space’s membership is a social club formed by entrepreneurs within in various fields (legal, design, marketing, etc.).
“They meet regularly not just to socialize,” she said, “but to help each other grow their businesses and tackle problems.”
HOW AND WHY THEY WORK
Shared workspaces offer a customizable experience that extends not just to their work environments, but to how and when they are used. Many feature flexible memberships, day passes and short-term leasing options. Nomad Coworking Space in Algiers, for example, is open to professionals of all types and offers a punch card and pay-as-you-go system.
“People in a wide array of industries use The Warehouse,” explained René Merino, manager of the Bywater co. Located in the Bywater, the space includes three conference rooms, private phone booths and phone rooms, a full kitchen, notary services, free parking and an indoor bike rack, and an attached bar and restaurant with a rooftop deck. “We have freelancers, small businesses, nonprofits, journalists, lawyers, accountants, builders, filmmakers, you name it.”
NICHE AND BOUTIQUE SPACES
While some co-working spaces welcome anyone and everyone, others in the region are designed for specific types of people or provide spaces based on a certain theme.
The aptly named Greenhouse, for example, utilizes a biophilic design to merge exterior landscaping, green space and natural sunlight with interior spaces. “On nice days we open the large garage door and let in the natural light,” said Carolyn Croom, Greenhouse community manager. Located in a converted warehouse along the Lafitte Greenway since 2023, the Greenhouse accommodates those who want to cycle or walk to work, providing a seamless transition from outdoor activities to the indoor workspace.
The Bissap Boutique is a 1,600-squarefoot, membership-based incubator inside the 2,800-square-foot Bissap Lounge, a queer, Black, woman-led company that aims to be an economic catalyst by removing barriers to resources and space for Black, brown and Indigenous entrepreneurs and creatives.
“What we are building here is a special community of people who deserve an opportunity to earn from their creativity without the burden of systemic barriers like space access,” said Bissap Lounge founder Maryam Foye. “The Bissap Boutique offers affordable rent, pop-up opportunities and brand development support.”
Other niche shared workspaces revolve around a specific field or technology. Future Use of Energy in Louisiana (FUEL), for example, recently announced the establishment of a field office in the Scale Workspace near The National World War II Museum. FUEL, a global research and development consortium for solving energy and hydrocarbon transition-related challenges, brings economic development, regional innovation and industry partners together. The field office in the Scale Workspace will be the FUEL hub for the Greater New Orleans region.

BEYOND BOUTIQUE
It’s not just locally owned boutiques opening shared workspaces in the greater New Orleans region. Global and national companies like the International Workplace Group, whose brands include Spaces, Regus and HQ, is expanding into Louisiana. The company currently operates locations in Uptown and Harahan and is opening a third location in Slidell in early 2027.
“An important business hub in the U.S., Louisiana is a fantastic place for us to boost our expansion plans as the need for high-quality flexible workspaces continues to soar and hybrid working becomes the new normal,” noted International Workplace Group CEO Mark Dixon.
International Workplace Group now has more than 15 flexible workspace locations in Louisiana, which add to its more than 1,500 centers in the U.S., and more than 4,000 centers globally. The company signed 465 new locations globally in the first half of 2024, including 200 centers in the U.S.
conference rooms. Memberships range from $59 a month for a virtual office membership described as “ideal for those looking for a professional business address and occasional office to meet with clients” to an elite level membership, which covers a part-time office for $399 a month.
Some shared workspaces not only offer private offices and meeting rooms, but they also focus on themes like wellness or social interaction. The Common House, for example, provides a 24-hour gym and wellness classes such as Pilates, yoga and sound bath. The space also includes a full-service restaurant with breakfast, lunch and dinner, two bars, and an upbeat rooftop area.
“The programming manager at Common House has organized live music and DJs, wine markets, and bread making classes,” said Haviland.
On the Westbank, in December 2024, Primary Workspace opened a co-working facility with conference rooms, shared desks, private offices, and retail space in a former Gretna schoolhouse that was built in 1910. After a $3.5 million renovation, Gretna’s first primary school is now home to a 13,000-square-foot shared workspace directly upstairs from a 2,800-square-foot retail space. HOW EMPLOYERS BENEFIT
It’s not just freelancers and hybrid workers who reap the advantages of shared workspaces. Large corporations turn to shared workspaces to provide workforce flexibility and reduce real estate costs. Many repetitive and expensive aspects of running a “traditional” office are removed when overhead costs are outsourced to shared workspace providers.
“We take care of a lot of the overhead and operational aspects of running an office,” said Merino of The Warehouse. “Our members do not have to worry about property taxes or insurance, internet or electric bills, printers or copiers, coffee or tea. We’ve got all that covered. Another big perk we offer is free street parking right outside our front door. Parking can be inconvenient and expensive in the CBD.”
Many businesses have found that moving employees to remote work has aided their bottom line. Dixon said there are other benefits as well.
“Our openings in Louisiana come at a time when more and more companies are discovering that flexible working boosts employee happiness and satisfaction while helping the environment,” he said. “Our workplace model is also proven to increase productivity and allows for a business to scale up or down at significantly reduced costs.”T

Lower Your Homeowners Insurance This Year
A local agent offers some advice
BY MELISSA BENNETT SIMEON
While much of the conversations around property insurance in Southeast Louisiana have been very doom and gloom, I’d like to shine some light on some hopeful trends we are seeing with property rates. After my 20 years specializing in property insurance, I have certainly seen many ups and downs when it comes to insurance rates.
Whether you are insuring your home or commercial properties, the trend from mid-2024 to the present has been positive. The majority of markets have held steady on rates or have come down which is fantastic news, and we anticipate this trend will continue this year.
So, what can you do if you haven’t seen a rate reduction, or worse, if your insurance premium has gone up?
MAKE SURE YOUR INSURANCE AGENT HAS ALL THE NECESSARY DETAILS REGARDING UPDATES DONE TO YOUR PROPERTY.
This may seem like a no-brainer, especially if your agent has been writing your insurance for years, but you’d be surprised how many times we are able to reduce clients’ premiums by adding additional pertinent underwriting information. This could be letting them know you updated your HVAC, or replaced plumbing. Particularly we have noticed that the year the wiring was updated (in older structures) is just as important as the roof year. The more details you can provide, the better.
MAKE SURE YOUR INSURANCE AGENT IS SHOPPING ALL THE MARKETS AT THEIR DISPOSAL.
This is another one that seems obvious, but sometimes it’s good to ask what other markets were quoted to make sure they have covered all the bases. Make sure that they give you multiple options from different insurance companies, not just the incumbent insurance company. You’d be surprised how many times trying a new market has worked out in our client’s favor.
MAKE SURE YOU DISCLOSE YOUR LOSS HISTORY.
The biggest reason we see insurance rates not decreasing is when there are open claims. Open claims tend to scare off insurance companies, especially if they suspect repairs are not completed. Make sure if you have an open claim, that you paint a very detailed picture for your agent to present to other markets to alleviate the underwriters’ concerns. Show them that you have taken the extra step to mitigate a loss from happening again, show receipts and proof of completed repairs, etc.
WHAT ELSE CAN YOU DO TO HELP IMPROVE YOUR INSURANCE PREMIUMS?
In the homeowners arena, we have seen some reduction in rates for clients who obtain wind mitigation surveys. A wind mitigation survey looks at construction features of your home, and documents those features. For example a hip roof vs. gable roof, concrete vs. frame construction, shutters and opening protections, roof-to-wall attachments — all these factors can influence the rate you are being charged on your commercial and personal property insurance. Now, these surveys aren’t 100% guaranteed to reduce your premium, so check with your insurance agent first to see if obtaining one could help. The cost is a few hundred dollars but can potentially translate into years of savings.
My best advice to those in the current insurance marketplace is to find an agent you trust, and make sure they are working for you. Make sure they are covering all the bases and testing new markets to see if there are potential rate savings with other markets. T

St. Bernard Parish Saw Major Expansions and Openings in 2024
Rooted in history, the parish’s growth continues across multiple industries
BY MEAGHAN MCCORMACK
In 2024, St. Bernard Parish showcased its ability to grow, adapt and modernize while staying true to its roots. Across industries and initiatives, unifying threads of sustainability and innovation wove through our efforts.
Take, for example, our seafood industry, a cornerstone of the parish’s identity. For years there was a missing link: full-scale, in-parish processing. This year, with the opening of Tommy’s Seafood’s processing facility, St. Bernard shrimpers are no longer forced to send their catch outside the region for processing. We plan to add cold storage and a packaging facility, and ongoing efforts to secure funding for an open-air seafood market will position the seafood sector for even greater success in the years to come. We continue to prioritize keeping our resources, and revenue, close to home.
We also saw promising expansions among St. Bernard’s top employers — leaders of our industrial sector. Milestone achievements and announcements include:
• SSE Steel Fabrication was recognized as one of America’s fastest-growing private companies and the No. 1 fastest-growing company
in the New Orleans metro area. This comes after SSE Steel Fabrication grew its revenue by 291% in two years and saw 193% yearover-year growth. Throughout 2024, SSE has been building production facilities for a leading electric car manufacturer in Austin, Texas.
• PBF Energy secured an industrial tax exemption to begin producing sustainable aviation fuel for airlines like United, Delta and American. If the company moves forward as planned, we will see new job creation and expand St. Benard Parish’s role as a staple in the ever-changing energy industry.
• Rain Carbon Inc., which operates a facility in Chalmette and is one of the largest private employers in the parish, announced the creation of a new Innovation Center for Energy Storage Materials in North America and a partnership with Northern Graphite to produce battery anode material. This material goes into lithium-ion battery products, found in everything from cordless vacuums to lawn mowers.
These developments signal the strength of our top employers and the role St. Bernard Parish plays in meeting the nation’s needs.
Our parish’s largest economic driver, the St. Bernard Port, also advanced in ways that underscore our readiness to satisfy modern demands. With the completion of the Chalmette Slip’s historic wharf rehabilitation, supported by a $13 million TIGER grant, the port is now better equipped to handle increased cargo and attract new business, expanding its role in our parish economy. Additionally, St. Bernard Port’s stevedoring company, Associated Terminals, announced its purchase of S.H. Bell Company, which will improve and expand service offerings for St. Bernard Port customers.
In another landmark project, we are transforming blighted land into new jobs with the redevelopment of the Paris Road landfill into a sustainability-focused commerce park that includes Glass Half Full’s new recycling facility. Once operational, Glass Half Full will process up to 600,000 glass bottles daily into eco-friendly sand and gravel that can be used to rebuild the Gulf Coast and will generate 100 new jobs for the parish.
We also embraced innovation to serve our growing entrepreneurial and professional communities. The soon-to-be-launched St. Claude Collective coworking space will provide a hub for collaboration, remote work and creativity, reflecting the dynamic needs of our evolving workforce.
Efforts to expand our economy and create jobs go hand-in-hand with investing in our people. Nunez Community College is leading the charge in workforce development with its newly launched Wind Energy Technology Program. By equipping residents with skills for the emerging offshore wind energy industry, this program supports career growth while preparing our community to lead in today’s energy renaissance.
We have set a course in St. Bernard Parish for lasting prosperity. The St. Bernard Economic Development Foundation is excited to carry this momentum into 2025 with renewed purpose to deliver opportunity, progress and prosperity for the people of St. Bernard. T

A Great Alternative to Traditional Tax Payments
This year, keep your taxes local and invest in the future of our region
BY PAULA POLITO
As a Jefferson Parish business owner, I am acutely aware of the upcoming tax season. Thankfully, I am also aware of an opportunity to reduce my tax burden while investing in my local community: School Readiness Tax Credits (SRTCs).
The School Readiness Tax Credit program enables individuals with a registered Louisiana business to redirect their state tax dollars to high-quality early care and education in Jefferson Parish. Not only do your taxes remain local, but the funds also serve as an investment in the future of our community — our children.
Business owners can claim this refundable credit by contributing to the Jefferson Ready Start Network (JRSN) Future Fund. The amount you donate lowers your Louisiana state tax liability dollar-for-dollar, up to $5,000. If your contribution to JRSN exceeds your business’s tax burden, then you will receive a check for the difference. This program is a win-win for business owners and our community.
WHY EARLY CARE AND EDUCATION?
Studies show that 90% of brain development occurs before age 5. It is critical that children birth to age 5 have access to high-quality interactions that support their development and growth. These early years mold the minds of our parish’s children — our future leaders, business owners, teachers and healthcare workers.
Research also shows that children who participate in high-quality early learning programs are 25% more likely to graduate from high school, while those who do not attend quality preschool programs are 70% more likely to be arrested for a violent crime before age 18. Making sure our children have a solid foundation benefits the quality of our community now and in the long run.
INVESTING IN THE FUTURE OF OUR PARISH
Access to early education is a workforce issue. Approximately 70% of Louisiana children from birth to age 5 have both parents, or their single parent, employed full time. Access to quality care enables parents to participate in the workforce or pursue higher level education and training.
Alternatively, when parents are unable to access care for their children, our workforce and economy suffer. Childcare breakdowns cost Louisiana businesses $762 million per year. Lack of access to quality early care also leads to an economic loss of approximately $180 million annually in Jefferson Parish and $1.2 billion annually across the state.
THE TIME IS NOW.
We cannot afford the compounding impact of these losses. Now is the time to act. Investing in early care and education directly addresses these economic challenges, while also yielding economic gains. In fact, high-quality early education can yield a 13% return for every dollar invested. The earlier we invest, the higher the returns.
Furthermore, Jefferson Parish is facing a population decline. It is important that we remain attractive to families and new businesses if we wish to secure a thriving future for our community. The SRTC program is a great way to support both.
PARTNERSHIPS ENHANCE LOCAL INVESTMENTS
Jefferson Ready Start Network (JRSN) is a coalition tasked by the Louisiana Department of Education to increase access to high-quality early care and education locally. As the designated Child Care Resource and Referral agency in Jefferson Parish, JRSN leads the SRTC initiative locally.
JRSN works in partnership with the Jefferson Community Foundation (JCF) to support fundraising initiatives. Together, JRSN and JCF created the Future Fund to provide a way for the business community and local residents to support quality early care and education.
Participating in the SRTC program is a strategic investment for your business. We are all required to pay our share of taxes. Why not direct this amount to high-quality early learning? Transform your tax obligation into an investment in our workforce and the future of our community by visiting JeffersonReadyStartNetwork.com/SRTC. T
PIONEERING
Blurring the lines between animation and reality, Swaybox Studios’ new animation style is set to disrupt a $400 billion industry
PUPPETRY
WHILE
animation may be an industry geared mostly toward the smallest set, it’s a colossal player in the entertainment marketplace that has grown even bigger in recent years.
Responsible for the rise of one of the largest and most well-known companies in the world — Disney is still the largest animation studio in existence — the animation industry is now estimated to be worth around $400 billion globally.
A big reason is that animated movies benefit from a wide appeal and great merchandising potential, factors that contribute to average profit margins 30% higher than their live action counterparts.
Although the artform has been around for a long time — the first animated films appeared in the early 1900s — it has seen its most notable economic growth over the last decade. So far, 11 animated films have broken $1 billion in worldwide box office earnings, and four of the top five have been released since 2018.
Surprisingly, however, animation itself has changed very little over the years. Following the release of Disney’s “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” in 1937, hand-drawn imagery became the standard for animated films for 60 years. The release of Pixar’s “Toy Story” in 1995 then introduced a whole new look, with a whole new set of possibilities to the marketplace when it became the first full-length film animated solely using computer-generated (CG) imagery. “Toy Story” was the secondhighest grossing film of the year, and with a 100% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and was nominated for three Academy Awards, it also ushered in a whole new era; CG animation now accounts for 85% of the global animation marketplace.
cross between CGI, stop motion and live action using puppets, the style has been turning some pretty big heads.
In 2022, Swaybox was plucked from obscurity when the NFL hired the company to create a two-minute commercial starring puppet likenesses of NFL stars that aired just before the Super Bowl halftime show.
More than 100 million people saw the piece, and the feedback was immediate and positive.
Buoyed by the exposure, the five Swaybox principals focused on securing film and television projects. Some success followed, but the biggest news hit Oct. 1, 2024, when the studio announced that it would be working with the home of beloved characters like Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman, DC Studios, on a full-length animated film called “Dynamic Duo.”
Set to be released on June 30, 2028, the film will focus on the early days of two iterations of Robin, Batman’s famed sidekick as portrayed at different times by Dick Grayson and Jason Todd.
Confident in the film’s appeal, DC has already decided on a sequel.
“Film number two will be well under way before we release the first,” noted co-founder and co-CEO Theresa Andersson.
Who Is Swaybox?
Accomplished musicians Theresa Andersson (a violinist and singer/songwriter from Sweden who came to New Orleans in 1990) and Arthur Mintz (a New Orleans drummer) met through music. Mintz, also a lover of puppetry, served as Andersson’s sound man and director during a tour. The couple fell in love and married and were working together on music and puppetry in 2011 when they received an opportunity to go to Shreveport and perform an interactive puppetry production of “The Fantastic Mr. Fox” that Mintz had directed.
“One condition of the gig was that we couldn’t bring any of our cast with us,” recalled Mintz, Swaybox’s co-CEO and director. “We had to use local talent. But one thing I’ve learned about puppeteering in the South is that there is no one with any experience.”
Thirty years later, the industry is finally seeing another major disruption, and it’s coming from New Orleans.
Marrying a love of music and puppetry, the five principals of Swaybox Studios in Elmwood have created a new form of animation that they call "Motion on Motion” (aka Momo). Described as a
The show included one human actor, and the partners auditioned a skateboarder named Chris Armand for the role. After watching Armand playing with the puppets during rehearsal breaks, Andersson said it became apparent that he was a natural.
Swaybox Studios’ puppets are carefully crafted for realism in appearance and movement. The company’s proprietary animation style — which they call Motion on Motion, or Momo — brings the puppets to life in a way that Arthur Mintz, co-CEO and director, describes as “like if a Pixar character came to life.”
Swaybox uses handmade sets, first painted in two dimensions and then crafted in intricate 3D detail, and in multiple scales depending on the performance and the actions required.
The same thing happened with another skateboarder, Noah Scruggs.
“Within 30 seconds I knew he was one of the best puppeteers I’d ever seen,” Mintz recounted. “I made him do things over and over because I couldn’t believe he hadn’t done this before.”
Armand and Scruggs then recommended bringing in a friend of theirs from the skateboard park they frequented, Thomas Woodruff, the park’s manager. But when they reached out to him, his response was a succinct “Hell no.” Woodruff did at least agree to attend one of the shows.
Recognizing the potential of their new friends, Andersson and Mintz maintained contact with the Shreveport trio. According to Mintz, it was more than just their innate ability that impressed.
“They had an incredible work ethic,” he said. They would practice one 7-second skateboard move for 10 hours a day, three days straight.”
From Frustration Comes Innovation
A year and a half after the Shreveport gig, with Mintz and Andersson still working as musicians, Mintz began working to launch a pet project of his, a coming-of-age political full-length film made with puppets. As things progressed, they formed a more formal alliance with Armand and Scruggs, and Woodruff at last agreed to join the team.
Still, even as they tinkered with new technologies and effects, there was no grand plan or design.
“That was really it, we just wanted to make this film,” said Mintz. “There was no plan to form a company. We did suspect that if we were able to pull this film off, there would be other applications.”
The team realized quickly that the leap from puppet shows to filmmaking was substantial.
“It was really startling when we first put our puppetry on camera to see how awful we were,” Mintz recalled. “What sells from 50 feet away with a live audience no longer sells when you’re in a close-up.”
Since the objective was to make a serious film, transformation was necessary.
“We wanted the performances to be incredibly nuanced because it was a very adult, layered, nuanced human story,” Mintz continued. “All of our development came out of our inability to achieve the results we were trying to achieve.”
The first advancement was drawn from how bands record music, laying down multiple tracks at different times in the studio. Using what they call “multi-track puppetry,” they discovered that they could create more complex, nuanced movements for their puppet characters. They eventually coined the phrase "Motion on Motion,” , a play on Les Paul’s Famous “Sound on Sound” approach to guitar, to describe their new method.
“That’s where we separated ourselves from everything that had come before,” said Mintz.
Still, there was much more ground to cover.
“We’ve always been driven by the creative — there was always a story that we wanted to tell,” explained Andersson, who is the co-CEO and producer for Swaybox. “But our first round of investment was more about just inventing; we were exploring all kinds of things on a very limited budget and just figuring stuff out.”
Adding to the complexity was the need to be able to teach their new techniques to the much greater number of people required to pull larger projects together. Scruggs is Swaybox’s creative technical director, Armand is the puppetry supervisor and a puppeteer, and Woodruff is the lead puppeteer, but the five co-founders knew that more staff and more skills had to be brought on board.
The Journey from First Demo to DC
“We thought what we’re doing was cool,” recounted Mintz, “but we were in a garage in Shreveport, and we could see that we were about to run out of money. So, we said ‘Let’s make a little demo reel of what’s possible’ and that piece went viral.”
Somewhat to their surprise, the demo really resonated in the marketplace and drew considerable attention from major Hollywood figures — none more important, and more interested, than Matt Reeves, director of “Planet of the Apes” and “Batman” films and owner of the 6th & Idaho production company. Reeves became a huge supporter of Swaybox.
“He felt that what we were doing was really special, something that he could relate to,” said Andersson. “He connected with the emotional quality of what we were doing, the truth of what we were doing.”
The new animation form offered a new aesthetic — with overtones of film noir and even cinema verité — as well as additional benefits.
“Because our filming is done in real time with real cameras, it is the highest fidelity imaginable relative to any other CG animation,” Mintz explained.
To start with, the puppets are far beyond Muppets or Punch and Judy.
“Our characters have the same range of facial articulation as a CG character.” Mintz stated. “It’s like if a Pixar character came to life.”
And the puppets aren’t the only things that are real. Swaybox uses handmade sets, first painted in two dimensions and then crafted in intricate 3D detail, and in multiple scales depending on the performance and the actions required.
“We use real water, real wind, real fire,” explained Armand. “If the puppets are underwater, then the puppeteer is underwater with them.
“We work with real light, we work with real directors of photography,” added Andersson
There is also a big practical advantage to the Swaybox approach: While a studio like Pixar may take a week to create three seconds of action, Swaybox averages about 60 seconds per day.
When the NFL came calling in 2022, Swaybox Studios had been operating out of its Elmwood location for nine years. The studio has always maintained a core group of 10-15 employees who are based in Louisiana. After the success, another project quickly followed.
“We were greenlit to make a project for HBO Max, a feature film based on Catwoman as a kid,” recounted Mintz. Unfortunately, three months into the project, the CEO of Warner Brothers decided to cut back on the studio’s streaming productions.
“He canceled 42 projects, including ours,” said Mintz.
With that door closed, however, another one soon opened.
The five principals of Swaybox Studios are (from left to right): Arthur Mintz, co-CEO and director; Theresa Andersson, co-CEO and producer; Thomas Woodruff, lead puppeteer; Chris Armand, puppetry supervisor and puppeteer; and Noah Scruggs, creative technical director.
It was then that director and producer Matt Reeves reappeared. Having seen some of the work for the Catwoman project, he put together a short video compilation, which he then brought to David Zaslov, president and CEO of Warner Brothers.
“Zaslov said, ‘This is incredible, we need to release it theatrically,’” said Mintz. But the marketing department felt that it needed to be a larger story.
Again, Reeves stepped in.
“Matt had always wanted to make a story about Robin [Batman’s sidekick], and he thought this would be the medium to do it in,” explained Mintz. “So, he called us and we started developing that with him. The writer of the Pixar film ‘Coco’ came back with this great script pitch that we were all excited about, but just to put this into context, it doesn’t take much when you’re running a startup to get you excited
“The previous projects we worked on were great, but everyone was, ‘We like your style, we like your aesthetic, let’s do that,’” said Armand. “Then when you get into working with them, they’re like, ‘We don’t like that anymore, can you do what we do?’ Matt Reeves and 6th & Idaho were the first people to say ‘We like that, stay doing that. That feels the best.”
Scaling Up
To take on a project of this size, their first fulllength feature film, Swaybox will be undergoing their own super transformation.
“Up until now we have operated with project-specific term employment where we have swelled up to 50-75 people depending on the project,” explained Andersson. “We will be hiring about 240 people to work on the film, and most of them will be here in Jefferson Parish, in this building.
within, we look for experienced candidates in similar industries.”
Andersson made it clear that Louisiana’s substantial film tax credits were integral to enabling the company to reach this level of success, and she feels that the studio is giving the state a good return on its investment.
“We wouldn’t be here if we didn’t have the tax credits,” she affirmed. “We are bringing a lot of people to the state and are having a lot of economic impact. Utilizing the tax credits was a must, and we were very happy to hear that they survived.”
Looking Ahead
As a breakthrough startup about to hit the big time, it would be easy for Swaybox to feel like they’ve figured it all out, and to just do what they do.
That’s not likely to happen.
“The one thing we learned over these last 11 years is to keep an open eye,” Mintz said. “We’re all huge fans of film and animation, and when you’re a fan of the medium, you get excited when you see something new. I think that was our competitive advantage, we were just kind of geeks, so when we would stumble on something that we had never seen before, it would excite us, and we would explore it.”
Driven by the tenacity and creativity that first brought them success in skateboarding and music, the team is determined to keep pushing boundaries.
when someone calls you with an idea. If it’s two celery sticks that rob a bank, you’re like, ‘I’m so into vegetables!’”
It also helped that all five of the co-founders related to the project concept for “Dynamic Duo” as they have long been fans of the DC comics universe.
The final icing on the cake was that Reeves fully embraces the Swaybox style.
Andersson noted that the company aims to hire locally as much as possible, only relocating people from out of state when they can’t find what they need. To that end, she said Swaybox is working with local universities to create opportunities for students via internship training programs.
“It is part of our ongoing development strategy to engage with the film studies professors to identify the interests of the students and connect them to opportunities here at Swaybox,” she said. “We also offer training that is specific to our systems for those who have the right base skill sets,” she said. “Typically, our leads have previous experience in similar positions and if we can't promote from
“We can’t sit here and anticipate what that next exciting discovery is going to be, but we will stay open to those discoveries,” said Mintz. “We have a sort of a laboratory that’s running concurrently with this film and we’re dumping ideas into it. We’re not going to have time to explore them before the release of the film, but we are keeping that going.”
“There are always new things you have to tackle,” added Andersson. “We try to tap into the things we know, that we’ve already figured out, and then the lab is for figuring out things in the future.” T

BEST LAWYERS
This list is excerpted from the 2025 editions of The Best Lawyers in America® and Best Lawyers: Ones to Watch® in America, the pre-eminent referral guides to the legal profession in the United States. Published since 1983, Best Lawyers® lists attorneys in 150 specialties, representing all 50 states, who have been chosen through an exhaustive survey in which thousands of the nation’s top lawyers confidentially evaluate their professional peers. The 2025 edition of The Best Lawyers in America is based on more than 13.7 million evaluations of lawyers by other lawyers.
The method used to compile Best Lawyers remains unchanged since the first edition was compiled more than 40 years ago. Lawyers are chosen for inclusion based solely on the vote of their peers. Listings cannot be bought, and no purchase is required to be included. In this regard, Best Lawyers remains the gold standard of reliability and integrity in lawyer ratings.
The nomination pool for the 2025 edition consisted of all lawyers whose names appeared in the previous edition of Best Lawyers, lawyers who were nominated since the previous survey and new nominees solicited from listed attorneys. In general, lawyers were asked to vote only on nominees in their own specialty in their own jurisdiction. Lawyers in closely related specialties were asked to vote across specialties, as were lawyers in smaller jurisdictions. Where specialties are national or international in nature, lawyers were asked to vote nationally as well as locally. Voting lawyers were also given an opportunity to offer more detailed comments on nominees. Each year, half of the voting pool receives fax or email ballots; the other half is polled by phone.
Voting lawyers were provided this general guideline for determining if a nominee should be listed among “the best”: “If you had a close friend or relative who needed a real estate lawyer (for example), and you could not handle the case yourself, to whom would you refer them?” All votes and comments were solicited with a guarantee of confidentiality a critical factor in the viability and validity of Best Lawyers’ surveys. To ensure the rigor of the selection process, lawyers were urged to use only their highest standards when voting and to evaluate each nominee based only on his or her individual merits. The additional comments were used to make more accurate comparisons between voting patterns and weight votes accordingly.
Best Lawyers uses various methodological tools to identify and correct for anomalies in both the nomination and voting process.
Recognition in the Best Lawyers: Ones to Watch® in America is based entirely on peer review and employs the same methodology that has made Best Lawyers the gold standard for legal rankings worldwide. These awards are recognitions given to attorneys who are earlier in their careers for outstanding professional excellence in private practice in the United States. Our “Ones to Watch” recipients typically have been in practice for 5-9 years.
Ultimately, of course, a lawyer’s inclusion is based on the subjective judgments of his or her fellow attorneys. While it is true that the lists may at times disproportionately reward visibility or popularity, the breadth of the survey, the candor of the respondents and the sophistication of the polling methodology largely correct for any biases.
For all these reasons, Best Lawyers lists continue to represent the most reliable, accurate and useful guide to the best lawyers in the United States available anywhere.

58 WHY DIDN’T I THINK OF THAT?
A new home-grown craft cooperative has Carnival in its spirit and good works on the mind.
FINALLY HOME
After decades of moves, The Bright School for the Deaf made its permanent home in Metairie in 2024, thanks to help from a local construction leader with a special tie to the cause
As the only early intervention program in Greater New Orleans and surrounding parishes for deaf, hard-of-hearing and language-delayed children, The Bright School for the Deaf is a welcome addition to Metairie.
The nonprofit agency has moved multiple times over the past 65 years. Its past location in New Orleans on Walmsley Avenue in New Orleans was destroyed during Hurricane Katrina. The organization has also leased property at New Orleans Speech and Hearing, Temple Sinai, Rayne Early Childhood, and Kingsley House. This past fall, The Bright School finally moved into a home of its own in a building that was formerly part of the Ridgewood Preparatory School campus.
The Bright School’s new Jefferson Parish campus is now more centrally located to surrounding parishes. However, the building needed renovations to make the environment more suitable for children ages 1 through 5. The school’s administration turned to DiGiovanni Construction for the task at hand. Julie DiGiovanni, vice president of the construction company, was more than happy to jump on board.
DiGiovanni’s daughter was born in 2016 with a rare genetic condition called Williams syndrome, which causes physical, developmental and cognitive disabilities.
“The special-needs community is tight-knit,” DiGiovanni explained. “A very special physical therapist referred us to The Bright School

when Mallory was 2. To this day, it’s one of the greatest gifts we have received.”
DiGiovanni Construction started working on the building in May 2024, and the school was fully operational by that September, but first came extensive planning and remodeling.
“The building was from the ’80s, and not much had been done to update it over the years, so we had our work cut out for us,” DiGiovanni said. “[It] did not have its own utility infrastructure, so each of these services had to be designed and incorporated into the building and surrounding land.”
DiGiovanni Construction worked with Linda Frantz, director of The Bright School for the Deaf, on space planning and design; the Jefferson Parish Building Permits Department on zoning
requirements; utility companies to establish the necessary services; and Timothy Terrell of TerrellFabacher Architects to modify the existing layout to meet the school’s needs.
“Building in dedicated therapy spaces was of the utmost importance,” DiGiovanni said. “We also added a lunchroom for the children, with a child-height counter for cooking demonstrations and crafts. [Frantz] chose light and airy colors throughout, [and] each teacher got to pick an accent wall for their room. Seeing how [everyone] decorated their spaces really brought the building to life.”
While the building’s existing layout worked well, DiGiovanni Construction added walls to carve out the therapy rooms and office space.
“We divided a very large room into two so that there is an auditorium for learning and meeting, as well as a resource room where families can gather,” DiGiovanni said.
The biggest challenge, as is usually the case, was time. While the project began in May, it took time to draw plans and to go through Jefferson Parish’s planning and permitting department. Once those tasks were complete, DiGiovanni Construction had just three months to finish the project in time for school to start in early September.
“We worked right through Labor Day weekend to make sure the school was ready to open on Sept. 3,” DiGiovanni said. “It took a lot of prioritization, coordination and a positive attitude. I have to give credit to all of our employees and subcontractors who worked with us and rearranged their schedules to make it all happen.”
The new space, which consists of two floors, now features a private entry and reception area, office space, four large classrooms, two classrooms leased to Spears Learning Center for applied behavior analysis therapy, four soundproof therapy rooms, a lunchroom, an auditorium, a parent resource room (available to families and the community, funded by a grant to supply materials on topics like deafness and speech and language development) and two playgrounds. The bathrooms also feature childsize toilets and sinks.
“The rooms are so big and inviting, allowing for different areas in each room for children to explore and grow,” DiGiovanni noted.
Today, The Bright School for the Deaf serves infants, toddlers and preschoolers, as well as a new kindergarten class.
“We installed interactive smart boards in three classrooms and will soon install amplification systems in each classroom,” Frantz said. “Today, the school provides special instruction, speech therapy, involvement in typical preschool routines, music therapy and some therapies that are in collaboration with Early Steps, such as occupational and physical therapy.”
DiGiovanni said she’s pleased with finished project.
“It was a pleasure and honor to be a part of building The Bright School’s permanent home,” she said. “The mission of the founders and staff — and the impact they have on their students and families — will always be near and dear to our hearts.” T
The interior houses four therapy rooms, enabling service providers to offer individual therapies in soundproof private areas.

TKEEP IT IN THE CULTURE
A
new home-grown craft cooperative has Carnival in its spirit and good works on the mind.
BY ASHLEY MCLELLAN PHOTOS BY EDMUND D. FOUNTAIN
he co-op, founded in January 2023 by Walter “Big Chief Beautiful” Sandifer Jr., Nick Holmes and Diego Pinzon, aims to provide essential supplies for culture bearers at an affordable price. For these three, “shop local” takes on personal meaning.
“We united through a shared commitment to preserving and celebrating the vibrant culture of New Orleans,” Sandifer said. “As a Mardi Gras Indian for over 30 years, I’ve experienced firsthand the struggles culture bearers face, particularly when it comes to sourcing materials. Nick, raised in Central City, is deeply rooted in our traditions and has always championed their preservation. Diego contributes a global perspective and a knack for organization. Together, we envisioned a space where our community could access affordable materials while ensuring our cultural economy stays within our neighborhoods.”
The home crafting industry overall is on the rise, with the popularity of knitting, crochet, jewelry making and more making frequent appearances on social media. While crafting is on the rise, so is the price of supplies. According to the Craft Industry Alliance, in 2022 the rise KEEP

of the cost of craft supplies skyrocketed due to the impacts of global inflation, a trend that many consumers are still facing to date. It stated, “While inflation has created challenges for craft businesses, many are hopeful, in no small part because of the craft industry’s inherent durability.”
To that point, nowhere is crafting and costuming more “durable” than in New Orleans. And while nationally crafters may be picking up knitting needles, locals are shelling out for more ephemeral items such as glitter, sequins, feather plumes and beads.
This is where Keep It in the Culture comes in, according to Sandifer. He noted that local costume makers — specifically the Mardi Gras Indians who create elaborate, full-body, handbeaded suits each year — can face an overwhelming financial dilemma when sourcing items for their creations.
“Our inspiration came from the ongoing challenges that Mardi Gras Indians and other cultural artisans face in finding affordable, high-quality materials, he said, noting that crafting a suit can take up to nine months and cost thousands of dollars. “Too often, the money spent on materials goes to big corporations, draining resources from our community. We wanted to change that by creating a cooperative where culture bearers are prioritized. Personally, as a Masking Indian for three decades with the Beautiful Creole Apache tribe, I’ve seen the economic sacrifices our community makes to preserve these traditions. It’s a way of combating the extraction of wealth
from our culture while ensuring our traditions remain strong and vibrant.”
Keep It in the Culture is open to anyone looking for supplies throughout the year and carries a variety of items for projects of all shapes and sizes, not only for Carnival-specific creations.
“We carry everything a culture bearer might need — from plumes, beads, sequins and rhinestones to other essential crafting materials for Mardi Gras Indian suits and cultural costumes,” said Sandifer. “We also stock Mardi Gras parade throws, including multi-size beads for float riders, along with cultural artifacts created by local artists. Additionally, we offer custom T-shirt designs, ensuring our offerings are as creative and community driven as the people we serve.”
Unlike big box craft stores, Keep It in the Culture combines bulk suppliers with local craftspeople to create a shop that maintains a balance of affordability and community consciousness. For example, feathers range from $75 to $390 per pound (depending on the size and variety of plumes). Online retailers often list the same items for double that price.
“Our materials come from a mix of local artisans and trusted overseas suppliers,” Sandifer said. “We focus on purchasing in bulk to keep
costs low while maintaining quality. This approach allows us to provide culture bearers with affordable resources while reinforcing our mission of keeping dollars within the community.”
Uplifting culture bearers is part and parcel in the shop’s overall mission, Sandifer noted.
“The Mardi Gras Indian tradition embodies resilience, artistry and history,” he said. “It’s a tribute to our ancestors and their fight for freedom and dignity. These hand-sewn suits tell stories of pride, unity and identity, rooted in the solidarity between enslaved Africans and the darkskinned Indigenous people who provided refuge and kinship. This legacy is not just a cultural treasure for New Orleans; it’s a testament to the power of creativity, community and resistance that resonates far beyond our city.”
Weiss notes that while the parade season is limited, the economic impact of Carnival is felt nearly year-round.
“Mardi Gras serves as a perennial economic catalyst,” he said, “as krewes prepare throughout the year, members engage in time-honored traditions, and visitors are drawn to New Orleans even in the off-season, captivated by the Mardi Gras legacy.”
Keep It in the Culture is open to anyone looking for supplies throughout the year and carries items for projects of all shapes and sizes, including seed beads, feathers, sequins and masks. The shop also offers costume workshops and classes.
In addition to selling craft supplies, the space acts as a community hub — fulfilling part of its founding mission — and is working to maintain a legacy for future generations.
CARNIVAL’S FINANCIAL IMPACT
$891 million — Total direct and indirect impact of Carnival on the New Orleans economy
3.07% — Carnival’s portion of New Orleans’s gross domestic product
$28 million — net fiscal benefit accrued to the city of New Orleans as a result of staging Carnival (including franchise value)
$2.64 — return on ever dollar invested by the city of New Orleans in Carnival
$14 million — Increase in state of Louisiana tax revenues as a result of Carnival

“We host workshops that teach crafting and beading techniques used in creating Mardi Gras Indian suits,” explained Sandifer. “These sessions are about more than just crafting—they’re about sharing knowledge, preserving our traditions, and inspiring future generations to embrace and carry forward the artistry and spirit of our culture.”
Supporting the community is at the core of the shop’s mission.
“We organize school supply drives, provide hydration stations during events like Super Sunday and offer workshops to teach invaluable crafting skills,” he noted. “Every purchase from our shop directly supports these initiatives, ensuring our efforts uplift the people who sustain our culture.”
For those who may be looking to support the efforts of Keep It In the Culture Sandifer noted that supporting the co-op is simple.
“Shop at our store, attend our workshops and share our story,” he said. “Every purchase keeps money circulating in our community and contributes to the preservation of our traditions. It’s been a true labor of love, and we’re incredibly proud of the progress we’ve made in such a short time. You can also support us by joining our events, donating to our initiatives, or simply spreading the word about what we’re doing. Together, we can keep these traditions alive and thriving for generations to come.”T
Fairy-Tale Retail
Far from being frightened away, Little Miss Muffin is a shop determined to help Lakeview reach its full potential.
BY KEITH TWITCHELL
Monique Duclaux is equal parts business owner and neighborhood advocate.
Duclaux has operated Little Miss Muffin, an eclectic women’s and children’s store at 766 Harrison Avenue in Lakeview, since she purchased the business from her grandmother in 1992. Founded in 1970 as a Hallmark store, and originally located across the street, the shop is a true neighborhood institution.
Duclaux sees shoppers who first came through the door as children now bringing in their own kids. It’s what she says inspires her to create something special.
“We want customers to walk in here and enjoy the full shopping experience,” she said. “Smell the candles, touch the blankets, feel the Lakeview vibe.”
She said a big part of making her shopping experience special lies in carrying a variety of original New Orleans art. Duclaux said the store increased its focus on local artists after Katrina, and those relationships have strengthened ever since.
“The artists become family,” she noted. “They reach out to us and ask what’s the next thing they need to do and what our customers want right now.”
Duclaux also engages with schools in the neighborhood, providing items for auctions,
supplies for activities and even hiring area students for jobs like gift-wrapping.
“They learn how to have a conversation with an adult,” she said, “to look people in the eye when they talk to them.”
A few younger employees have even moved on to become long-term employees; many of Little Miss Muffin’s 15-to-20-member staff have worked at the store for more than 20 years.
Duclaux said her work is fed by the love of her neighborhood and the desire to see it reach its full potential — even to see Harrison Avenue achieve national Main Street designation.
“I don’t worry about competition,” she stated. “The more people that want to open a store, open a restaurant, bring enterprise to Lakeview, the better.”
While women’s clothing, jewelry, purses, home décor, original art, cards and stationery, kitchen and dining ware cater to adults, infants to young teenagers are served by a carefully curated collection of children’s books, specialty clothing, toys and games.
The emphasis, in Duclaux’s words, is, “let’s step away from the screen and be creative.”
Ironically, her biggest challenge is online shopping. While Little Miss Muffin has an extensive e-commerce website, it doesn’t leave Duclaux feeling particularly satisfied.
“How can our website recreate that same customer experience people get in the store?” she asked rhetorically. “I work through this every day, trying to give people that same level of service, answering the phone, responding to online messages as soon as I see them, even on a Sunday.”
Still, Duclaux says she prefers the personal connections she makes with in-store patrons. This connectivity extends to the neighborhood, which she promotes constantly.
