ot all brides are like New Orleans brides. I was struck by this notion recently while second-lining on a blissfully cool evening en route to a friend’s wedding reception. The happy couple had just declared their “I Dos” and along with the rest of the bridal party, family and friends, I shimmied to the sounds of the brass band and waved my handkerchief — a keepsake from my own wedding. No ma’am, in other cities, parasols, go-cups and after-parties featuring comforting late-night bites from Lucky Dog just aren’t done. Big Easy brides were raised on crawfish and Mardi Gras and not only get to infuse their nuptials with lively local traditions, but also can pick-and-chose from a host of rituals born in the South. The tricky business of allowing, bringing and being plus-ones by Dee Lane
Q: Our guest list is tight, so we’re not able to offer our single friends a plus-one. How do we seat them; all at one table or spread out? Consider placing a few singles at a couple of different tables across the reception, seating two or three at tables of couples good at including strangers in conversation. However, if this group of singles know each other or have something in common (like hailing from the same city or having attended the same school) feel free to seat them together. Who knows, maybe you’ll get a matchmaking credit down the road.
Q: I was recently invited to an ex-boyfriend’s wedding and the invitation was addressed to me plus a guest. I don’t

have a boyfriend right now, and don’t want to try to find a date just for this. Who can I bring? When you’re offered a plus-one, you’re free to bring whomever you want: a friend, a date or a relative. Just make certain that you give the person you choose to bring with you some background information and consideration. Explain a little about the people getting married and who they are to you, as well as any traditions or rituals that may be observed at the wedding or anything that you think might happen that would embarrass your guest if they didn’t know about it ahead of time. Since you’re going to be bringing this person with you to make you feel more comfortable, make certain that you do everything you

can to make your guest as at ease as possible.
Q: I’ve been invited to a wedding as a plus-one, but I don’t know either of the people getting married. What do I need to know? Since you’ll be the guest of someone else’s guest, the most important thing is to be as considerate of the couple getting married and of the person who invited you as possible; remember the Southern idiom (once famously said by Ronald Reagan) “Dance with the one who brung ya.” The first rule is to be flexible. Now isn’t the time to be particular about the menu or hotel room, just try to go with the flow and, if necessary, order room service or pass by a drive-thru after the reception.
While you should enjoy yourself, don’t try to be the life of the party. Have fun and participate in the day; Instagram, tweet and Snapchat the fun – not embarrassing – moments, especially if the couple has created a wedding hashtag. But don’t overindulge, make impromptu speeches or feel like you should be the center of every dance circle. As part of this, dress conservatively; you should look polished, not like you’re trying to steal the spotlight. Look to the person you’ll be attending with for guidance on introductions, the guestbook, gift and so on. Remember that she or he knows these people much better than you do. Above all, make certain that you both have a great time. b

Quick fixes to look long and lean on your Big Day By Mirella Cameran

upermodels have it. Charlize Theron has it, Victoria Beckham doesn’t and Miley Cyrus was slammed for not having it at the Oscars. Can you guess what it is? Good posture — and a bride who has it — will glide like a gazelle, confident and graceful. The bride who doesn’t, will look roundshouldered and slouchy. Of course there health benefits to good posture: fewer headaches, less back pain, reduced injury and even, some claim, more immunity to disease. For brides, the benefits are instant. Experts say you can look between five to 10 pounds lighter if you stand correctly. Pulling your shoulders back and down will elongate your neckline. Pulling in your abdominals and rib cage will flatten your

stomach and slim the waist. Holding a strong core will relieve pressure from your legs and allow them to move more lithely. So all you have to do is stand up straight? No. Experts tell us most people have “bad” posture from spending so much time sitting down hunched over computers and smartphones. To regain good posture, we have to work against these daily habits. “The key to good posture is good cervical (neck) and scapular (shoulder blade) strength and flexibility,” says Dr. Michael J. McNulty, with Southern Orthopedic Specialists. “Exercises with resistance bands can help — ones that pull your shoulders back, like bench rows and push-ups. Dehydration from too much champagne or crash diets

will also make it harder to hold your body well.” Elizabeth Gilbreath Van Alstyne, director of Pilates at Romney Pilates Center and a professional ballerina, says brides can benefit in several ways from correct instruction. “Good posture is when all the weight bearing joints — spine and pelvis, are aligned,” says Van Alstyne. “Pilates strengths your core muscles to support these joints so we are able to relax our shoulders, move our head and neck freely and relieve stress from our hips, legs and feet. “We teach active body awareness, making us aware of our muscles, our breathing and our alignment. It takes practice and clients can use these techniques anytime they feel their body slumping or aching. We also
teach brides to hold their bouquets without rounding their shoulders.” Pure Barre offers brides special rates, says Sarah Tennyson. “Our method is focused on improving core strength and we offer a ‘Bride-to-Be’ package special for engaged clients,” she says. “Three months of unlimited classes for $400.” Jessie Morel, from Trainer To Go, recommends a combination of resistance training for core strength and yoga because it creates a consciousness of the physical connection of the feet to the earth. Whatever method you choose, it takes effort to regain the natural posture we are born with. Without a doubt, it’s worth it for the big day and the rest of your life. b

A guide to finding the shoe that fits By Mirella CamerAn

f you’re reading this, you’ve probably been seduced by beautiful shoes. You’ve also probably ended up in excruciating pain, your feet killing you. As a bride, standing up for 10 hours, you do not want to make this mistake again and end up wincing and grimacing through the Big Day. Angelique Palumbo, owner of Angelique boutiques in New Orleans, has good news for brides and everyone else. “When we walk in heels, our curves are accentuated and we become sexier,” says Palumbo. “Fortunately you
can wear high heels and still have happy feet, as long as you choose wisely.” Here are Palumbo’s tips: 4Look for soft fabrics: The iconic Manolo Blahnik peep-toe satin pumps with brooches will mold to your feet. 4Spend 10 to 15 percent of the cost of your dress on shoes: The more expensive brands have extra padding for comfort and you can wear your shoes again and again. 4Think mesh and strappy sandals: On trend and with room for your feet to breathe, the choices are limitless.
4Familiar is good: Stick to the same height you usually wear or go for a platform to go high. 4Consider the location: A jewel encrusted sandal will work for the beach or a sturdy embellished wedge will be comfortable on grass.
However, no matter how good the shoe is, wearing it in the sweltering heat can lead to pain and blisters. Dr. Anthony Perry, a podiatrist with Ochsner advises: 4Choose leather or natural fabrics, as synthetics will make your feet sweat. 4Buy a pair with some
room, because dancing and alcohol make your feet swell. 4Wear them around the house for a few weeks and ask a shoe repair shop to stretch tight areas. 4Place a corn pad over any remaining areas of pressure. 4Change your shoes during the day, wear your highest, sexiest heel down the aisle and then switch into something lower. 4Keep a cornstarch-based powder handy or use antiperspirant to minimize sweating. 4Remember lower heels and better cushioning will relieve pressure from the ball of the foot. b

Start toe TLC early Patricia Bereciartua, owner of Le Visage Day Spa, advises brides to treat themselves to regular pedicures six months before the wedding. “Brides should have a pedicure every four weeks so we can deal with any sore spots or calluses and try colors,” says Bereciartua. “We include a hydrating treatment and to avoid dryness we advise against flip flops or going barefoot. We use Footlogix products and

recommend an at home regime. “A final pedicure right before the day will ensure feet are well exfoliated and hydrated and polish, especially gel, will last longer. “Our leg and foot massage stimulates blood and lymph flow to clear toxins. Brides also enjoy the relaxation and stress relief it provides, it’s a moment of calm amidst all the festivities.”

moldering, hot and steamy: These are words we hope you use to describe your romance. But they are also accurate descriptors of the weather in New Orleans during the summer, and even the daintiest Southern belle can’t fully avoid breaking a sweat during the muggier months. Despite the heat and humidity, summers are enchanting, so it’s no surprise that many still opt to tie the knot during warmer months. The elevated temperatures, of course, can pose some special challenges; fortunately, myriad makeup brands are designed to withstand hot and humid weather, and a bevy of local makeup artists, including Ashley Sievert of her eponymous makeup studio, and Candice Kennedy of Glam Nola, who ensure that your face won’t be melting as you

say, “I do.” Kennedy has been a makeup artist for eight years. She and her business partner, Ashley Love, work with a dedicated team which goes on-site to help brides and members of the wedding party look their best. Kennedy strongly recommends starting a moisturizing regimen long before the wedding. “You want your face to be nice and hydrated,” she says. “Drink lots of water and definitely moisturize in the morning before your wedding. It will make a world of difference and make for a nice glow and smooth texture. You don’t want any of your skin to be cracked or dry.” This is especially important if the wedding is outside, where, depending on the time of day, the lighting might be less forgiving. “We like to use an airbrush foundation,” she says, good

for natural or heavier looks. “It’s almost like it’s waterproof. Also, we recommend patting it – not wiping it.” On top of that, Kennedy uses a special blotting powder to soak up shine. She and Love favor the Japanese luxury brand Ko Gen Do’s primers, concealers, foundation, powder, color and makeup remover. “It’s all made of plant botanicals,” says Kennedy. It’s favored on film sets (actress Christina Applegate is a fan). Makeup artist Ashley Sievert is so attuned to the special considerations needed for hot and humid climates she created her own brand. “My style and the amount of makeup I use doesn’t typically change depending on the seasons,” she says. “I strive for my signature natural [look] with a glamorous twist.” Her makeup line, Ashley
Sievert Beauty, is designed to suit all ages, skin tones and skin types. “It gives the appearance of naturally flawless skin,” she says. Sievert recommends her powder for touchups throughout the day. Kennedy says that when she and her team show up for a wedding, they first apply makeup to the members of the party, because “we want the bride’s makeup to be the freshest.” She says typically, the makeup should be done about two hours before the ceremony begins, to allow for plenty of time for pre-wedding photography and touchups. This all-star chignon not only suits different face shapes (round, oval, heart and so on), but it also works well with all dresses and necklines. “You can wear the chignon on the side for a more retro feel or in the center to look more classic,” says Nicole Pigeon of i’Land PediSpa and Blo Bar. “The bride can choose more or less volume at the front and add a little bang for softness. It’s always very sensual, romantic and effortless and because the hair has been pinned up, it will look very pretty down the next day.”
Brides wearing a strapless dress, spaghetti straps or an illusion neckline might choose a half updo. It’s the best of both worlds: length and softness around the face but with the structure and ease of having some hair pinned up. “A half-up ‘do with easy, sexy waves is both glamorous and polished, and brides having outdoor or beach weddings often favor this style,” says Pigeon.

For this year’s White House correspondent’s dinner, celebrity stylist Bryce Scarlett updated the look for Victoria Secret’s model Anne V, with a more unkempt interpretation. The hair is twisted before being wrapped round and pinned with pieces falling around the face. “Brides think top knots can look too severe,” says New York hair stylist Alan Tossler. “This is softer while still being show-stopping and sophisticated. Instead of twisting the hair, you could add an accessory, flowers or headpiece.”
Once restricted to the playground and music festivals, braids are now a staple on runways and red carpets. The John Barrett Salon at Bergdorf Goodman now has its own “Braid Bar,” which is popular with brides. “Incorporating plaits is ideal for a modern bride who wants something different but not extreme,” says Tosser. “In this style the plait creates a crown or halo. It’s a pretty and romantic. Braids can also be spiraled into intricate patterns for a bride who wants to create architecture with her hair.” Tying the knot with your hair can be a lot of fun and with multiple events to attend, you don’t have to set your heart on just one.

ighty percent of brides start a new workout plan before their wedding, but it can take just as long to get your hair in shape. Experts agree you should start working on your hair up to a year in advance. “We like to see brides for a consultation as soon as they are engaged,” says Penelope Gozza from Maison de Cheveux in downtown New Orleans. “We can find out the color, length and style they want and start preparing the hair both at

home and in the salon.” When it comes to product, one size doesn’t fit all, so planning in advance allows for time to experiment. “Depending on the look brides are going for, there are specific products which will prepare the hair,” says April Ponder, stylist at Spa Isbell on Magazine Street. “It’s a good idea to try different ones to find those that will work best.” All experts agree that sticking to a plan will go along way to ensuring your locks are as long, lustrous and manageable as you

amplified,” says Belk. “Your role is to focus the attention back on her and to dazzle and deflect to get her through. Whether it’s an issue with a signature drink or drama with a family member, remind her that she has you and that you’re there to help.”
For Richer, for Poorer You’ve got your monthly Excel spreadsheet mapped out — rent, electric, groceries, clothing, Sazeracs — but no box reserved for “bridesmaid expenditures.” When you agree to
join Team Wedding, the costs can start to multiply quickly and the fear of breaking your bank account can be enough to send you running from your lifelong best friend. Robyn Sedgebeer, lead planner for Blue Skies Events Nola, says a common misstep is not calculating or addressing costs up front. “When your friend asks you to be part of their special day, it is a huge responsibility,” says Sedgebeer, who has been in the event planning industry for eight years.

You’ve already received a sparkly ring on your finger and have been asked to be the matron of honor. Depending upon the rest of the group, this could put you in a position of being the only married woman in the mix, and potentially the only one with children. If you find yourself in the minority, instead of feeling like the outsider, Peggy Post suggests you take a different approach. “I recommend that the matron of honor try to bend as much as she can to find some common ground with the other maids.” She suggests finding an ally in the group with whom to bond to make the meshing of personalities flow more easily. “If she can identify with even one girl and recruit her to be her right hand, she’ll have an ‘in’ with the other girls.”
“Most people say yes with excitement and don’t realize it also comes with the cost of a dress, shoes, showers, bachelorette party, gifts, etc.” She encourages you to have an honest dialogue with yourself and a frank conversation with the bride. “You have to really look at your financials and ask yourself if you can do this without stressing yourself and, or the bride out.”
In Sickness and Health This is less about you faking the flu to get out of attending one of the bride’s seven showers and more about keeping her mental state in check. To keep your beloved friend from going off the deep end, newlywed Carli Gertler says to keep the bride’s blinders on. Married in May 2014 at City Park, Gertler’s bridal party consisted of seven bridesmaids, including both a maid and matron of honor. She took a laidback approach to her planning process, allowing the girls to pick their own dresses and not fretting over those who couldn’t make it to her bachelorette party which was held in Manhattan, but even a woman with a demeanor as relaxed as hers could have become tense when her wedding planner got a kidney stone and didn’t make it to the wedding. Thanks to her helpful and assertive bridal party, Gertler never even found out about the no-show until the night was over.
“One of my ‘take charge personality’ bridesmaids found out she wouldn’t make it and made all the decisions without even asking me what to do because she knew it could stress me out.”
To Love and to Cherish In many cases the bridal attendants won’t know each other. To put your best foot forward as a bridesmaid, the initial bonding process can set a great tone says the recently wed Diana Chauvin, owner of La Thai Uptown. Her original bridal party (it shifted day of the wedding due to an illness) included her step-sister as the maid of honor and four bridesmaids, two of whom were from high school and the others later-in-life friends. “They didn’t want me to worry about them bonding, so the first meeting planned was trying on their dresses and just having fun with it,” said Chauvin. “We had a luncheon to hang out and from there they went ahead with coordinating their plans which was a stress reliever for me.” Chauvin’s maid of honor also took the lead on many of the conversations between the women, steering the planning process regarding the shower and bachelorette party and keeping the lines of communication open. “I thought the fact that they didn’t know each other and that they all have different personalities might be an issue, but they seemed to all work together well. I
could tell they all wanted to do it for me and they did it with grace.”
‘Till Death Us Do Part In Chauvin’s case, the bridal party bonding was relatively seamless, but not every group is that fortunate. Alphas and omegas collide and individual feelings can get in the way of the bigger picture. According to Peggy Post, great granddaughterin-law of Emily Post, if personalities conflict, letting the bride in on the contention is on a case-bycase basis. “If a disagreement between two attendants is regarding paying to throw a party for the bride, this is not a time to get the bride involved because she’d feel terrible about the money issue,” says Post. “However, if you disagree on something seemingly minor like shoe color, which is really the bride’s decision and not a topic so loaded with emotion, that’s okay to take up with her.” Additionally, your role as bridesmaid isn’t finished at the first sight of the open bar at the wedding. Post reminds that getting your bride through the planning process is only part of the commitment. “For the rehearsal dinner and day of duties, remember to pitch in. Look out for and greet the other guests, be aware of how the timing is going and help round up people for photos. Always be available to help out and lend a hand when you see the opportunity.” b

While the hottest trend in wedding dining offers seemingly endless possibilities — from gourmet s’mores bars to sushi stations — it also begs the question, where does one begin? To help, New Orleans Bride Magazine takes a look at the most popular and creative options in food and beverage bars and stations in the city today. All are proof that you

Wine May be Fine, But… “Liquor is really making a big comeback. It’s surpassing the wine trend,” says Gail Varuso, director of sales for Ralph Brennan Catering and Events. Varuso notes that the Moscow Mule is currently among the most requested options at her cocktail bars. Brent Bogan, wedding sales manager at The Chicory, says he created a bourbon tasting bar for a recent wedding. “We offered 10 different types of bourbon and served

it over this really cool ice formed in a perfect circle, like a golf ball,” he says, noting that specialty cocktails remain big at The Chicory. “We do a lot of apple martinis and Pimms cups, but generally our French 75 is the most popular choice.” Dovetailing perfectly with the rise of the specialty cocktail is the rise of the juice bar. “I’m seeing juice bars being combined with cocktail stations a lot within the last year,” says Hayley Mitchell, director of catering for Michael’s Catering. “We’re juicing tomatoes for Bloody Marys, for example, and
making our own fresh sweet and sour mix.” As the evening wears on, coffee bars — which have gained popularity in the past few years — can switch to cordial stations, providing after dinner drinks to guests. “Usually we begin offering the coffee with Kahlua, Baileys or Drambuie,” Mitchell says. Bogan adds that café au lait is slowly becoming more popular. “We’re offering it as either a late-night pass or as a station,” he says.
Comfort Food Goes Cuisine “People want to see their
favorite foods at a wedding, even though the bride and groom may be too busy to even get a bite, as we well know,” says Ralph Brennan Catering’s Varuso. Professional wedding planner Kelly Sherlock says that along with the ubiquitous mac and cheese bars, she’s doing a fair amount of grits bars — serving the Southern staple along with offerings found in traditional baked potato bars, such as cheese and bacon bits, or even barbecued shrimp. Bogan says The Chicory has taken its cue from the recent food truck craze and began offering more unique station options. “We started doing a Korean taco station about a year ago,” he says. “We’re doing firecracker shrimp and Korean beef with kimchi and people are really going crazy over it.” The Chicory has also found success in what they call their “Stadium Package,” which they began offering in February. “It’s the kind of food you’d see at a ball game,” Bogan says. “We’re doing crawfish nachos and corndogs and those giant pretzels with a dipping station. Grooms love it.” Bogan says dessert-wise, ice cream stations are still big, as is a bananas foster station. “Those have been huge for us,” he says. “A lot of people are doing them now instead of the groom’s cake. It’s a real production when the chef comes out and fires it up.”
Add a Sweet and Savory French Flair For those looking to add some extra personality
to their special day while keeping the fun, relaxed feel of traditional street food, there’s a new player in town — The Crepe Cart. Last August, Tracy Kish and Samantha Saliter, both veteran creators of the French version of a pancake, struck out on their own to create a method of serving their treats with a bit more joie de vivre. “The cart was constructed with a nod to the traditional French carts, like you’d see on the streets of Paris,” says Kish. “We had an engineer build it for us and Samantha painted it.” Kish says the cart’s removable side panels enable it to work with any color scheme. “We have a blue theme or a pink and white theme, which really offers that Parisian look,” she says. “But we can also custom paint the cart by request.” From The Crepe Cart, Kish and Saliter offer both savory and sweet options. Most popular are their Caprese crepes — made with tomatoes, basil and mozzarella — along with strawberries or bananas and Nutella, and of course the Crepe Suzette. “The options are really unlimited though,” says Kish, “since each crepe is made to order.” While perfectly suited to an outdoor or courtyard affair, The Crepe Cart is made to break down to fit any space that offers at least a four-foot wide door. The Chicory’s expansion offers couples new New Orleans flavor with historic industrial edge By Phil McCausland
T
he chicory plant has beautiful blue flowers with delicious leaves that work wonderfully in salads and roots ripe for grinding up and serving in coffee. The latter part is particularly true in New Orleans, where a café au lait order isn’t finished until you tell your barista whether you want it with chicory or without. The flavor is peppery and earthy, separating it from your typical coffee. In the same way The Chicory, the well-known New Orleans wedding and event venue, carries its own flair displaying its distinct, rustic New Orleans feel. The exposed brick and brass gas

lanterns place you within a time machine showing you a New Orleans filled to the brim with romantic idealism. But now Jim and Cindy Besselman, the owners of The Chicory, have purchased and expanded into another space next door, tinkering with that same sense of place. The new space, named The Gallery, also has those famous brass gas lanterns, but contains a stained concrete floor and powerful wood pillars running down the middle of its three floors. “We didn’t know how to describe it at first,” says Brent Bogan, the wedding sales manager for The Chicory and The Gallery. “So, I

just thought of something myself and started calling it ‘Warehouse Industrial Chic’ because it’s not as rustic as The Chicory but its still very New Orleans.” The new building’s three floors are separated into three different spaces, each 5,000 square feet. The first is The Gallery, the second The Parlor and the third floor is a rooftop space overlooking the city. The Parlor and the rooftop space can both be rented for the wedding ceremony and can host up to 200 people. That’s really the aim of the new space: provide the award-winning accommodations of The Chicory to those
who don’t want to have a wedding of more than 200 people, which is the perfect number for The Chicory’s space. The Gallery is ideal for that 100 to 150 seated wedding party or under-200 cocktail reception. Though The Gallery has a different name, the expectations should remain the same. “Guests are going to get the same service that they get from our same staff and awesome chef,” Bogan said. “I call it ‘Chicory Junior.’ The Chicory has an amazing name and reputation, so [The Gallery] is for the person who wants to get married but want to keep their wedding party smaller. With this new
building they can get that same Chicory experience but on a smaller scale.” Beyond just the ambiance and aesthetic, the food served is tough to beat. There’s a beauty in the simplicity that this venue’s chef provides. It’s elegant but modest and holds true to its New Orleans location, providing such options as Cajun Fried Turkey, Seafood or Boudin Stuffed Pork Loin or Root Beer Glazed Ham at the carving stations. When he talks about it, it becomes very apparent Bogan is a true believer in The Chicory and Gallery’s food program. “Our package is one of the best ones in the city,” he says. “Every package includes all these passed hors d’oeuvres and the buffet and food stations. I feel like our menu is a lot easier than everybody else’s. It just looks different than everybody else’s, and
we never really have any issues because we can do any kind of reception. We do the New Orleans cocktail style reception, we can do a full-seated buffet or a full-seated and serve dinner.” But most important of all is that any whim will be met. Bogan is there to meet your every desire, planning each step alongside you. And lucky for any prospective couple, he rarely resists. “I don’t say ‘no’ a whole lot,” he says with a laugh. “And when I do, it’s because we tried something before and it didn’t work. But basically, we start off with a package and customize it to every individual’s needs and wants.” And with Bogan’s help and The Gallery as your background, you’re almost guaranteed to find your own personal happy ending with as much New Orleans flavor as you care to add. b

Renovations, expansions and new venues provide something for every Big Easy wedding By Phil McCausland
The Jaxson If you want a central location in New Orleans, you can’t get much better than The Jaxson on the River on Decatur Street near Jackson Square. Newly opened in April, The Jaxson overlooks the Mississippi River and has a sleek, modern feel. But it’s not just the vibe of the place that is attractive. Because the space was essentially rebuilt, the many amenities available to couples are incredible. “We have a state-of-the-art sound system and all kinds of specialty lighting all built in,” says The Jaxson’s sales

director Tanya Waller. “So they can expect a lot of in-house perks that a lot of places don’t have, since we literally gutted the space and built it out.” It’s a large space, seating 200 maximum for a formal sit down reception or 375 for a more casual cocktail party, and the outdoor space allows for a natural flow.
Generations Hall Originally built in the 1820s as a sugar plant, Generations Hall is now a music and event destination of epic proportions. With three massive rooms that can be

rented separately or as one giant space, this venue is an audio-visual masterpiece. Known as a place for amazing musicianship and history, you can also host your wedding party here in a setting with all the funky furniture and lighting one could want. The venue provides an excellent and accommodating staff who are sure to attend to your every whim, large or small, and will help you plan the perfect event. The different rooms provide different vibes, from the exclusivity of a VIP event to the openness
of a luxury warehouse. The new renovation is geared towards weddings and the largest change came in the Metropolitan One room, which once could only seat 60 to 70 people. “We removed an island bar that we used to have in the middle of the space and pushed it to the back wall, so we gained a lot of square footage, says Generations Hall’s sales manager Hector Laines. “Now we can do 120 to 150, depending on how they want to do it. But there’s a new lovely four-person bar with five
chandeliers, and it really opened up the space.”
Brennan’s Restaurant A Brennan’s Restaurant wedding reception is a historic experience. With the choice of seven different rooms, each with its own pleasant storied New Orleans ambiance, the choices really are endless at this venue. The most intimate room can hold 12 seated or 25 in a reception setup, while the largest allows for 110 guests seated or 160 reception style. Whether it’s the Chanteclair Room with its fantasy interpretation of French Organerie or the muted, cozy setting found inside Morphy room, guests are promised a vibrant European décor evoking romanticism in even the most hard-hearted. Brennan’s was already iconic in its history and tradition, says wedding sales manager Ashley Brodie, “and so when we closed and renovated it using the designer Richard Keith Langham from New York, he just transformed it into this incredibly magical place with lots of little bits of history and touches that make it a one of a kind experience for people coming to New Orleans or who are from New Orleans.” The food is guaranteed to be exemplary and even more exciting is the must-have signature dessert flambéed tableside, the traditional Bananas Foster.
Redemption Redemption’s name is well earned. Housed within a former church built in 1914, the space formerly hosted Christian’s Restaurant until Hurricane Katrina laid waste to the building. Now the structure has earned another
shot in the arm as Chef Greg Picolo renovated the space once again, as he expanded the bar and main floor and added a bridal suite upstairs. Now the bride has a place to prepare and hang out before the Big Day. “We do full service weddings,” Picolo says, “not just receptions and rehearsal dinners. We’ve done quite a few. We have the outside pergola, which is beautifully landscaped and we do weddings out there as well as seating.” The space can accommodate between 110 and 140 people depending on the setup. But if it’s a reception you want, feel free to sneak in a few extra guests.
The Elms Mansion The beauty of the Garden District is hard to beat, so it’s tough to imagine Elms Mansion could become even more gorgeous after its most recent facelift or refreshing of the mansion. But those behind the former Garden District home have achieved the impossible and continue the traditions they’ve carried since 1969 by accenting the inherent beauty of their space, which can hold between 150 and 400 people. “We made it very light and bright,” Elms Mansion sales manager Judy Fern says, “and took the room that was formerly a pink room and made it silver in white and gold touches and hung a chandelier. [We] call it the Crown Room.” Now it’s a room where brides prefer to cut their cake. But that’s not all they did during the renovation. the hustle and bustle of the city induces an easiness of the moment, and here one can find a picturesque outdoor space where you can even enjoy your ceremony. A cocktail style reception with a buffet fits about 225 people in the ballroom, but the courtyard and porches allow for up to 300 people to celebrate in style. Smaller
weddings can also be hosted here as the Olympia room provides for those more intimate ceremonies and receptions. The hotel can also play host to much of your wedding party with 42 rooms and a few suites, which can be connected as a sort of pre-wedding clubhouse for the bridal party.

Moviesets: A Reel Venue Do you want to have a little fun with your wedding? Why not invite in some of your favorite film settings into the mix at Moviesets: A Reel Venue. This new space is one part event venue and one part props department for films (seriously there’s a prop house in the back). The owners partnered with Lawrence Barratini a propmaster for movies filmed in New Orleans. “If you go to L.A. you can get married at Universal Studios, so the owners thought, why not use our resources and provide that to New Orleanians?” says venue manager Sarah Worsley. “It’s a fun New Orleans vibe, and the bride and groom get to come in and theme it up or use the set.” Sets include the ship from “12 Years a Slave,” a scene from “Planet of the Apes,” the Chinese Garden from “G.I. Joe Retaliation,” the circus tent and Airstream trailers from “American Horror Story” and many more. “They can bring in their own caterer [and] drinks and we’re only 25 minutes away from [the Central Business District].” The massive space fits up to 500 and though it might seem a distance away for some, you don’t have to worry about transportation. Your package includes tons of parking and a souped up school bus that fits 45.
Amici The casual Italian-eatery Amici’s now has a space for those who love its modern rustic feel. On the second floor of the Magazine Street restaurant wedding parties can enjoy a private room with hardwood floors,
stained glass windows and chandeliers. The space comfortably seats 160 people, but a cocktail setting opens it up to 200 to 250. Privacy also means a private entrance and a fully stocked bar just for guests. Amici also will cater the entire event, serving its own style of delicious Italian cuisine. The most attractive part of the room without a doubt is its uncomplicated sophistication. “Most clients say they like the elegance and the coziness of it,” says Danielle Luken, Amici’s event sales manager. “They don’t have to do a whole lot more to decorate it and there’s a simplicity to it that makes it very attractive.”
Galatoire’s 33 Bar & Steak Galatoire’s 33 Bar & Steak now has two private rooms for its guests, both with balconies overlooking Bourbon Street. The second floor room is the larger of the two and can fit between 150 and 250 guests. This room hosts a very soft color palate: neutral tones, taupe colors, with striking gold chandeliers throughout. The third floor room, called the Wine Room, can hold between 30 and 50 people depending on the setup. It’s a more intimate room with rich mahogany wine shelving along the walls and a built in wet bar. “All the drinks are made right there in the room by your waiter,” says Lisa Anzaloneso it’s really meant to feel like you’re in a French Quarter townhome rather than a restaurant.” Wedding organizers can decide between the menus of Galatoire’s or Galatoire’s 33 Bar & Steak, which is, of course, a fun decision to make. b BrideNewOrleans.com |

High-Fashion Photography: Gone are the days of stuffy wedding photographs. Today,

lines appear to be blurred between high-fashion and wedding shoots. Just take a peek at the portfolio of Nicole Davidge from Southern Shutter Photography, whose sleek style looks as if it could be torn from the pages of Vogue. Davidge says she studies different magazines for inspiration. “When I have my bride, I’ll play around with poses, so that she doesn’t realize she’s being photographed and it’s natural when she moves or she’s laughing and we really connect.”

The Return of the Wedding Album: When photographers first started taking to digital photography, the wedding album seemed to go the wayside. Combine that with social media, and it seems that there’s never a print to be found. But that’s changing. Lindsay Glatz of Wild Wonder Photography says that couples are now realizing that their wedding is the only time they’ll have this archived treasure to be part of their home and are once again asking for albums. Glatz recently sat down with
her 89-year-old aunt to peruse photos from her parent’s wedding day and immediately understood the importance of an heirloom piece that an album provides. “If there’s a fire, this is what you’re going to grab,” says Glatz. Personally Curated Details: It’s not a secret that weddings have become more and more personalized — from adding a choreographed dance to a signature cocktail. SouthernStyle Photo Opportunities Picture perfect ideas in true Southern tradition Bourbon Burying: Exactly one month before the Big Day, the couple is to bury a full, unopened bottle of bourbon at the ceremony site to ward off rain on the wedding day. Postceremony, the married duo can dig up the booze and share it with their guests.
rapher, who was named one of the top 10 wedding photographers in the world, says that couples are now sourcing (or asking their coordinators to find) curated details for personalized and distinct wedding photos. “Couples will bring in an old wooden crate and a ball of stamps for a vintage wedding, along with their invitation suite, or for a Mid-Century Modern wedding, they may bring in a geometric tray and their own hipster glasses for gin and tonics,” says Star. This not only distinguishes the photos, but also makes the snaps special and exclusive to the couple. Outdoor Daytime Weddings: Davidge says there is a recent shift in weddings moving from the church to sunny outdoor venues. And while New Orleans certainly has its share of stunning steeples, Davidge now has couples whose central focus are the photos — exceptional photos — and for that you need perfect lighting. “Couples want what they see in wedding magazines and blogs, and those are outdoor

weddings with incredible lighting,” says Davidge. She adds that photography is such a big part of the budget, and that photos are one of the few things you can take home from that day. Photos From Day One: Your wedding photographer is more than just the person who snaps a few photos on your Big Day. Glatz says it best when she describes that person as your storyteller. For her, she’s recently begun capturing the story from the proposal, where she’s hired to secretly shoot the moment where the question is popped on bended knee. From here, couples often want professional photos taken of the bachelorette party, wedding showers, the rehearsal dinner, the wedding day and even day-after shoots. These “wedding suites” allow couples to build a relationship with their photographer and have a complete story from the proposal to the wedding day. Day-After Shoots: In addition to a full suite of photographs,

day-after shoots are increasingly popular. Glatz explains that it’s often challenging to take all of the shots that couples want on the actual wedding day, and that the day-after shoot allows you to go anywhere for photos. “If you get married in a church, or Uptown, you can hit up the Bywater for funky shots. Or you can do something different with your hair or dress,” says Glatz. In addition, she explains that if you love backlit, sunny photos, you may not have time for them on the wedding day, but that the options are endless for the day-after shoot. Timeless Photography: Star says that as simple and as silly as it may sound, a renaissance of classic photography is back. “While beautiful and timeless have always existed, photographers became like kids in a candy shop with digital [photography] a few years ago.” Star explains that while it’s fun to play with digital photos, now that it’s not as new, photographers are going back to classic work that stands the test of time. b
Cake Pull: Silver charms attached to ribbons are placed in the wedding cake and pulled out by bridesmaids to determine their “fate.” A clover charm symbolizes that good luck is on the way, while a ring represents the next to marry. Second Line: A Crescent City wedding isn’t a party without a Second Line. The parasols, feather boas, go-cups and beads make for the best photo opps of the night. Groom’s Cake: What was once of the fruitcake variety, the groom’s cake is often chocolate — or whatever suits the guy’s taste — both in flavor and style. Unity Dirt: Instead of a candle, combine dirt from each of your family’s childhood homes into a vessel at the ceremony. Save that dirt for your new home to plant a Magnolia tree — or a similarly strong southern root.

ith so many bands to choose from, your band of choice often defines your wedding — especially in New Orleans. Locals fall in love listening to such a wide array of live music here that any band of any stripe that can make a crowd dance is welcome at a Big Easy wedding. Still, the perfect wedding band knows a few special moves to keep your guests humming long after the party ends. Singer and multi-instrumentalist Lucas Davenport has played his share of weddings with his R&B band, the Right Reverend Soul Review, his country band, Earl Can Bird or his especially gorgeous vocal group, St. Cecelia’s Asylum Chorus. More often though, Davenport has read couples their vows as the soulful ordained minister at their ceremonies. “I will sing if people want me too,” Davenport offers. “I was once doing

Jewish band, for the hora, which is the big dance where they lift the bride and groom up in chairs,” says Panorama’s founder and clarinet player, Ben Schenck. “For that ceremony, there’s specific music, so they asked me to get a couple of guys together — we did it as a trio: clarinet, tuba and drum set, on Nov. 19, 1995.” Today, two different seven-piece versions of Panorama — the sit-down jazz band, and the marching brass band — tour the world and play seemingly every local festival. “But weddings are still a huge part of our business,” says Schenck. “The club gigs feel like live rehearsals where we evolve our sound so that when we play our weddings we’re fresh.” Weddings are about more than just good money for the ragtag band. “It’s a sacred duty,” says Schenck. “People need us to help them celebrate. It’s meaningful work that has value.” With the aforementioned bands, however, you’d probably have to request songs such as “The Electric Slide” long in advance to make sure they know it, day of wedding. “People hire us for what we do,” says Vanessa Niemann, country singer in Gal Holiday and the Honky Tonk Revue “At weddings we do all the heartbreaking, cheating, drinking songs we always do.” Heartbreak or no, Niemann and company always get the reception dancing. “We do a lot of slow dancing, but also Western swing,” she says. “We do a lot of fun party songs, like,

The famous Bucktown AllStars and also the Boogiemen both provide more than just music to dance to. “A wedding’s like a play that has different acts and an intermission,” says Bucktown All-Stars drummer Steve Alfonso. “Our soundman plays a big role too, monitoring the board when people get up to talk on the mic, he makes sure they don’t feed back. He’ll download requested music to play.” Both the Boogiemen and the All-Stars have killer horn sections, and both bands pride themselves on being able to take you wherever your party needs to go. “One word: versatile,” Scott Schmidt of the Boogiemen says, describing his band. “We can run through Frank Sinatra-era to Bruno Mars, and everything in between. You have to play music from seven different decades now — ‘60s, ‘70s, ‘80s, you gotta go back to the ‘50s and then also play all the brand new modern music.” Like Panorama, Egg Yolk Jubilee and other local bands, the Boogiemen and the All-Stars can both go mobile in a pinch. “We’ve done weddings where we’ve been playing in a tent outside and the generator shuts off — we just do 20 minutes of second line stuff until they fix it,” says Schmidt. “The most important thing is just to deliver the quality.” b BrideNewOrleans.com |

If you can only nail down those wedding pieces and parts, maybe you can finally focus on that romantic trip of a lifetime. That postwedding adventure is the well-deserved dessert to your 10-course meal. Yet, when you finally sit down to book your dream getaway, you

Here’s a plan: Figure out your honeymoon priorities (sightseeing, brilliant weather, more affordable off-season, festive high season or whatever else tops your list), then match your travel dates to a destination that fits. June: Hawaii Marrying in June dates back to Roman times, when the

caesars honored the deity Juno, goddess of marriage and childbirth, with a party on June 1. Have your own Juno-inspired fete, Alohastyle, in Hawaii. While temperatures in this island state remain fairly stable, June’s lack of rain ensures a drier stay. Why not recuperate from the wedding buzz on Lanai, the lessertraveled island. A pineapple plantation until the 1980s, this tiny, red rock-mottled, pine-tree studded landscape drew tourists only recently. That means its old-school,

July: Tahiti Marlon Brando called his response to Tahiti the “tincture of the South Seas.” Revived by the pristine environments, Polynesian lifestyle, remote expanses, and romantic French undertones of the island nation, Brando relished the lifestyle so much, he left Hollywood behind and became a resident. 10-12 Months To Go __ You’re engaged! Make sure you celebrate with your fiancé, friends and family. __ Nail down the basics. Where are you getting married? Who’s paying for what? What is your budget? How many guests will be there? __ Alert the wedding party. Decide who you want in your wedding party and ask them as soon as you can. __ Pick the date. Check with your family members and wedding party before you make a final decision so there are no huge time conflicts.

__ Find a wedding planner. If you’re planning on using a wedding planner, find one in the early stages. He or she will make all the craziness more manageable. __ Book your ceremony and reception location. Where you get married will affect a lot of your planning decisions, so reserving a place should be at the top of your to-do list. __ Insure your ring. Your engagement ring is special, but it’s also expensive. Make sure you get it insured, just in case. __ Book officiant. Make sure your preferred officiant has your wedding date on the calendar.

__ Write thank you notes for engagement gifts. You will most likely receive a few gifts right after your engagement. Send a thank you note for each gift within three months of receiving it. __ Take engagement photos. Book a session with a professional photographer so you have a few nice photos of you and your fiancé for save-the-dates, newspaper announcements and more. Some photographers will include an engagement shoot with a wedding package. __ Pick your colors. Think about your wedding colors and the overall look of your day. Are you going for a classic look or trendy? Vintage
or glamorous? Your color scheme will guide you through other big decisions, such as the bridesmaid dresses and the groomsmen’s ties.

You need an appointment at most wedding boutiques, so call a few of your favorite stores to set up a time. __ Register. Register at two or three stores. Choose items at a variety of prices so everyone can find something they can afford. Add more gifts than you think you need so your friends and family have some options. __ Think about the rehearsal dinner. It’s customary that the groom’s parents host the rehearsal dinner. Talk to your future in-laws about possibilities. __ Schedule transportation. Book a limo, trolley or another form of transportation to shuttle your wedding party from the hotel to your ceremony location. Decide whether you need transportation for your guests to get from the reception to the hotel at the end of the reception. __ Plan your honeymoon. If you’re going out of the country for your trip, make sure you and your fiancé have up-to-date passports. __ Figure out your rentals. Rentals depend on the location of your wedding, but if you’re responsible for common rental items such as chairs and plates, make a list of everything you need and where you’re going to find each item. __ Book a block of hotel rooms for out-of-town guests. If you’re not familiar with the hotel, ask a hotel representative to show you a room and don’t forget to inquire about a group rate. __ Order bridesmaid dresses. If your bridesmaids live far away, give them plenty of time to buy their dresses and get them fitted.
4-5 Months To Go __ Buy wedding bands. Shopping for wedding
__ Reserve a wedding night hotel room. Where are you staying for the wedding night? If you’re not leaving for your honeymoon immediately after the reception, decide where you want to stay for the night. __ Get your dress fitted. Your wedding dress is one of the most important dresses you will wear in your life, so it should fit impeccably. Many brides plan up to three fittings. __ Decide on attire for the groom and groomsmen. Talk to your fiancé about what he wants to wear and what will match your overall color scheme. Keep the time of day in mind when researching options. __ Check in with your vendors. Make final decisions with your vendors and update them on new wedding information, such as when they should arrive. __ Order your wedding cake. Taste a few cakes before you decide on your final choice. Talk to your fiancé about a groom’s cake if he wants one.
2-3 Months To Go __ Mail out the invitations. Double-check with the post office that you have enough postage. Many wedding invitations require more than one stamp. __ Solidify the catering menu. Whether you’re doing heavy hors d’oeuvres or a sit-down meal, verify the final menu. __ Schedule your hair and makeup team. Find a good hair stylist and makeup artist to help you and your bridesmaids get ready for the day.
One Month Before __ Send your wedding party an itinerary. Make sure your family and friends know where and when to be for the wedding day so everyone shows up at the right place at the right time. __ Enjoy a facial. Everyone reacts differently to facials. If you’re planning on getting one, schedule it a few days before your wedding, or do a trial run months before.
__ Get your marriage license. Head to the Orleans Parish Marriage License Office in Benson Tower (1450 Poydras St., Suite 407) for your marriage certificate. The office is open Monday through Friday from 8:15 a.m. until 3:15 p.m. Visit dhh.louisiana.gov for requirements. __ Set up your second line. If you’re planning to second line at your wedding, you’re going to need a permit. Call the New Orleans Police Department Special Events Section at (504) 658-7100 to schedule everything 15 to 20 days before your wedding day. You can also email questions to specialevents@nola.gov. __ Practice your hair and makeup. It’s best to practice with your hair stylist and makeup artists ahead of time so there are no surprises on the big day. Plan your trial run for a day you want good hair, such as your bridal shower or bachelorette party. __ Finalize the guest list. Send a final headcount to your caterer and any other vendor who needs the number.
One Week Before __ Double-check with your vendors.
