hen planning your wedding, a key consideration should always be longevity. With each selection and decision ask yourself, will this dress, cake and décor stand the test of time? Sure, it’s fun (and recommended) to include trending items that also make your big day feel current and informed. But you don’t want to look back at your photos and gasp when you see wildly exaggerated puffy sleeves on your dress, mile-high teased bangs and bold makeup. There are a multitude of safe ways to embrace trends while still maintaining an elegant and timeless aesthetic. We’ve seen a return to the classics in some form or another when it comes to all aspects of wedding design. From ornate, Lambeth-style cakes with Victorian piping, to bespoke floral and feminine invitations, people are longing for beautiful designs that, rightfully so, have stood the test of time. This issue is dripping in Old-World charm, from the stunning interiors of Solari, where we shot our fashion spread, to the effortlessly gorgeous bouquets and styles shown throughout. A wedding in itself is steeped in tradition and history. What’s more romantic than the idea of forever? Enduring design never has to be boring. Boring is a choice. If something is striking, timeless and classic it always will be. Including of-the-moment and fresh details will give the entire event a modern and stylish feel. Just be sure to remember the sage advice, “Everything in moderation.” Throughout this issue you’ll find exceptional guidance from local experts on all of the essentials, including music selection, photography, catering and so much more. We hope you find inspiration and gain useful knowledge on these pages as you’re planning your own very special occasion. Cheers!

Locally based Joel Catering, a chef and experience-driven gourmet catering company, offers seamless on-site preparation and world-class service. While the company’s menus are largely influenced by Southern and New Orleans cuisine, Joel Catering also uses unique global flavors to create top-notch dishes. Couples can design a one-of-a-kind menu. The company also owns and operates Il Mercato, the gorgeous event space in the Lower Garden District that’s perfect for small- to medium-sized weddings. 1911 Magazine St., 504-827-2400, joels.com, ilmercatoevents.com.

FLOWER PRESERVATION

Bridal bouquets are one of the prettiest parts of a wedding, yet they are often discarded after the reception. As a way to create a keepsake, Stephanie Baker Young at Lush Magnolia preserves wedding florals — by encasing them in resin — to create works of art that the bride and groom can treasure for years to come. After drying the flowers, Young creates mock-up floral arrangement designs (mimicking the original bouquet as much as possible) for her clients to approve. Young and her team then create items like tables, lamp bases, serving boards and book ends with a turnaround time of between six to 10 months. Other services include colored resin, such as navy or light pink, and flower painting to enhance the color. 404 Magazine St., 504-457-7157, lushmagnolia.com.

LET THEM EAT CAKE Pastry Chef Jeremy Fogg has opened Mae’s Bakeshop Uptown on Baronne Street in the space formerly occupied by Beth Biundo Sweets. In addition to offering American pastries with strong Southern influences (such as biscuits, cinnamon rolls, muffins, cookies and pies), the bakeshop works closely with couples to design the wedding cake of their dreams with a bevy of options for cake flavors, filling and icing. 3917 Baronne St., 504-345-2403, maesbakeshopnola.com.

The book features insider tips on finding the perfect wedding dress; guidance on selecting accessories; hair and makeup to enhance the bridal look; strategies for managing stress and maintaining a positive mindset throughout the wedding planning process; and real-life stories and inspiration from brides. Look for it at local retailers after its June 3 publication date.

NOLA BACHELORETTES A new ranking by marketing company Searchbloom has named the best bachelorette party destinations across the United States for 2024, and New Orleans ranked fifth on the list. The ranking was based on three categories for each destination: entertainment value; social scene; and accommodations. Each city’s performance was then compared to its affordability. New Orleans ranked 9.7 out of 10 when it came to the value for the money spent (at $179 per day), with the city’s social scene being its top-performing category. CUISINE & COCK T AI L S

The Planted Palate Vegetarian and vegan options to delight guests BY AMY GABRIEL

Y

our love is as deep-rooted as the cuisine you plan to serve at your reception. The growth in interest and intrigue in plant-based gastronomy has become a seed sown with couples looking to embed a renewed perspective on farm-fresh fare as a romantic epicurean experience for guests to embrace. With the flourishing curiosity in plant-based cuisine requests, Jen Sherrod, owner and general manager of Elysian Events Catering, has taken a hearty interest in presenting the options in a picturesque way. “We always enjoy making couples’ visions come to life and present them in a way that looks beautiful as well as tastes amazing,” said Sherrod. “Making sure plant-based options are not just an afterthought, but just as delicious as meat or seafood-based options.” Having prepared many plant-based events, including two weddings that the couples requested to be entirely vegetarian, Sherrod is well-versed in the local provision scene, noting that she often acquires produce from the Crescent City Farmers Market and JV Foods among others. In partnering with these purveyors, she reminds that seasonality is among the dictating factors in availability. Says Sherrod, “Summer is a great time for local produce, figs, tomatoes, eggplant, corn, peaches; there are lots of options to create delicious menu items.” Creatively, she likes to take Southern classics and give them an inventive twist, noting ideas like mushroom grillades and grits, mirliton and white bean stew, eggplant creole and oyster mushroom piquant. To the skeptics she says, “Tasting something that is just as delicious or more delicious is a surefire way to change their mind! Seeing something

64 | SUMMER/AUTUMN 2024

that looks great is also helpful in getting them excited.” Cayla Cole, Hotel Monteleone’s wedding specialist, agrees that the visual of the menu can both spark interest and create bonding moments amongst your partygoers. “Properly showcasing and highlighting a plant-based menu with a variety of ingredients and substitutions will start conversations and questions amongst guests of ‘Have you heard of this dish or ingredient?’ or ‘Did you know this isn’t made of meat?’,” said Cole. “The presentation will lure you in, and the flavor will convince you.” Cole, who notes that all the Monteleone’s in-house ingredients are farm-to-table (or Gulf-to-table) and that their selected produce comes from local purveyors like Bubba’s Produce, Louisiana Fresh Produce, American Seafoods and JV Foods, recommends building a progression of ideas throughout the reception to please palates with various flavor profiles. Concepts like red bean and rice fritters hors d’oeuvres, a main course of vegan spinach pasta with Louisiana pecan pesto and a Burgundy poached pear filled with almonds and dates are ways to take your guests through the savory and sweet styles of this fare. “Plant-based doesn’t always equate to overly healthy or flavorless,” she reminds. “Plant-based dishes can be done well with the help of a variety of spices, seasonings and substitutions. With a good imagination and the dedication of our team, we can make even the most delectable dishes with plant-based ingredients while keeping those same flavors you know and love!” b

Perfect Pairings Selecting complementary wines that tell a story BY AMY GABRIEL

Y

ou found the person you want to clink with for the rest of your life. Uncork your creativity and treat your guests to a curated reception experience through thoughtfully paired wine, beer and libations that tell a story from first sip to final toast. Cayla Cole, Hotel Monteleone’s wedding specialist, says that your drink selection is an opportunity to create one of the many “wow moments” that can make the reception a memorable event. “Making beverage selections equally as, if not more, important than cuisine choices seems to be trending right now,” said Cole. “Pairings make for an enticing talking topic. Having guests taste notes of a variety of beverages, such as acidity, sweetness and richness, and witness how well-thought-out and perfectly paired the selections are will spark conversations and give the reception a more elevated and luxurious feel.” Tiffany Zauner, operations manager of Beyond the Bar NOLA, has noticed that modern couples are taking their pairings to heart with specific selections that conjure a memory they want to convey or share. “Anyone can have drinks at their wedding but not everyone tells a story with those choices,” said Zauner. “For example, we know a good white wine pairs well with seafood but if you have the white wine that the bride drank on their first date that means something. By selecting specific drinks with sentimental value, couples can infuse their wedding day with deeper significance and emotional connections.” She also lends that bringing in local concepts can bring a sense of place that will please your partygoers. “To make beer pairings feel more celebratory at a wedding, you can

66 | SUMMER/AUTUMN 2024

enhance the presentation by serving beer on tap, which adds a touch of elegance. Additionally, choosing locally sourced craft beers can bring a unique and special element to the celebration, showcasing regional flavors and supporting local breweries. These small details can elevate the beer pairing experience and make it feel more festive and memorable for guests.” Noting that most couples are focused on giving their guests a superb experience, she suggests bringing in pros with niche knowledge about the beverage selection. “Focusing on specific pairings elevates the wedding reception by adding a layer of sophistication and thoughtfulness to the dining experience. Hiring a sommelier to curate wine pairings can enhance guests’ overall enjoyment, offering them a chance to savor fine wines that complement the menu seamlessly. This attention to detail can create a memorable and refined dining experience that reflects the couple’s preferences and priorities.” James Haldeman, general manager of Martin Wine & Spirits, reminds that a well-crafted wine selection can enhance the already flavorful staple Southern dishes that are so beloved and anticipated by your guests. “Traditional New Orleans dishes are frequently served at weddings and we love to pair wines with them,” said Haldeman. “The vinho verde and Picpoul de Pinet are perfect with shrimp and grits. Lower alcohol wines tend to pair best with the spicy flavors of Creole and Cajun cuisine, as alcohol tends to intensify spice. Whites from the French region of Alsace are ideal for spicy jambalayas and étouffées as they are generally low in alcohol and have an oiliness that is great at tempering spice. And never underestimate a quality rosé or Beaujolais with red beans!” b

Picture Perfect Capturing the Moment, Creating a Memory BY MEGAN HOLT

M

any people have memories of flipping through their parents’ and grandparents’ wedding albums, asking about the photographs and seeing the smiles on their loved ones’ faces as they reminisce about their big day. These memories make one thing clear: The person behind the camera isn’t merely photographing an event, but rather creating a way to relive special moments again and again. Couples should devote significant time to finding just the right person to entrust with such a crucial task. To help with this process, local wedding photographers offer advice sure to make the big day picture-perfect. For Mike Lirette, the first decision a couple should make is what kind of photography they like — editorial, traditional, photojournalistic or candid? From there, couples should look at galleries and portfolios to find a photographer who specializes in that style. Ollie Alexander of Love is Rad recommends using examples of a photographer’s own work, as opposed to a Pinterest board or other photographs, when considering whether someone is the right fit. Building on this advice, Greer Gattuso notes that viewing multiple full wedding galleries is the best way to gauge a photographer’s

range. She also points out that “a wedding photographer with many years of experience will have a stronger ability to handle various situations on the wedding day that may be unexpected (including weather, lighting, timeline changes, etc.), all while creating gorgeous photos.” Casey McMurray advises a phone call or Zoom meeting to see if there is a connection: “Your photographer will be with you all day long! It’s important to actually like them!” Similarly, Alexander says “Consider someone with a calming presence that you actually wouldn’t mind hanging out with, as they will be there with you through some of your most special and intimate moments.” Building on this advice, Lauren Carroll remarks, “I know for me, once speaking with a potential client, I can tell right away if we are a good fit!” Between these getting-to-know you conversations, pre-wedding work, the wedding day itself and post-wedding editing, a photographer will work at least 40 hours on a couple’s total wedding experience, though the day itself is typically around eight hours. The photographer’s time and expertise will be accounted for in the contract, which is an absolutely essential document. Lirette outlines what

couples should anticipate in terms of budget: “Expect $4500-$8500 for the standard eight continuous hours of photo coverage and two photographers, with more experienced photographers charging higher rates.” The contract should include not only the photographer’s rate and payment schedule, but also the date, location, hours of coverage, a timeline for receiving the completed images, the type and resolution of images to be delivered and a policy for cancellation, rescheduling, and emergencies. Additional services, such as an engagement session, or products, such as an album, may also be included. Many photographers will include a model release, a document stating that the photographer owns the rights to the images and language about posting the photos on social media and the photographer’s website. Lirette urges couples to thoroughly read their contract before signing, as this document is intended to protect both the business and the client. Echoing this sentiment, Gattuso says, “You should clearly understand what your contract states and never hesitate to ask your photographer if you have any questions.” All four photographers agree that the contract should be signed around a year in advance, if not earlier. Not only is New Orleans a popular destination wedding spot, but hurricane season and huge citywide events such as Mardi Gras or Jazz Fest sometimes leave couples dashing to secure a plumb date. Especially during peak wedding season — roughly September-November and March-May — photographers’ schedules will fill quickly. Couples should plan to book the photographer as soon as they have decided on a date, time and a location. After booking, communication is the key for a good relationship between the couple and their photographer. As much as they love meeting clients for coffee and talking on the phone, all our experts agree that the most

important details should be communicated in writing. Carroll explains, “Having everything written in an email chain helps us keep track of the details for the wedding day. It’s easy to forget verbal agreements and details. When I have a call or in person meeting scheduled with a client, I take notes and email them to the client after to have everything documented.” McMurray and Lirette concur that a list of moments the couple would like to capture is essential, and they also encourage clients to share information about deaths, divorces or anything else that will help the photographer understand family dynamics when doing group shots. Gattuso also likes to have a timeline for the day, complete with locations, on hand. Alexander asks that couples communicate small details to help capture those special moments, such as someone’s reaction to a surprise or a close-up of a sentimental piece of jewelry worn by the bride. The better the communication, the more trust the couple and photographer will have in one another. McMurray tells couples, “The more you trust [the photographer], the more magical your photos will be.” This trust also ensures that couples can relax and let the photographer work, knowing that their future memories are in good hands. These memories should be as unique as the couple themselves. So, if a couple would like to nix an old tradition and do something new, Carroll enthusiastically encourages them to go for it! Echoing this advice, Alexander reminds couples that “there are no rules …Throw a talent show at your reception, get married in the street outside your house with all your friends standing around in Mardi Gras costumes, walk down the aisle in a denim gown.” Rather than trying to conform to an idea of what a wedding “should” be, couples should instead focus on creating an experience that brings them joy. The photographs — and memories — are best when the camera captures a couple’s genuine happiness. b

MUSIC

THE PROS

One And Done

Less is often more, particularly when it comes to music. BY KELLY MASSICOT

W

hen music is the heart and soul of a city like New Orleans, it’s no wonder the topic ranks high in importance during wedding planning. There’s no party like a New Orleans party and that doesn’t exclude a wedding celebration. However, when discussing the marriage of music and a wedding, the conversation often revolves heavily around the reception. As anyone who has experienced the deep dive into the logistics

74 | SUMMER/AUTUMN 2024

of wedding planning knows, the reception is not the only key to ensuring your wedding is a complete success. Therefore, why would the discussion regarding music simply focus on the reception and not the wedding in its entirety? From start to finish, ceremony to reception, a wedding is a performance. It tells a story, and working with professionals who can see your wedding from beginning to end with you offers a multitude of benefits.

Working with one musician or group to complete the wedding music of your dreams, the biggest positive is just that — you’re working with one person or group. For those not getting married in a religious setting, where music and instruments are typically provided and unchangeable, trying to figure out and coordinate performers for up to three separate acts of a wedding has the potential to become a logistical nightmare. “I think, for the [couple], it’s just easier to deal with one band instead of multiple,” noted Jon Mannino of Fat City Swing Band. Trenton Thomas, known professionally as T-Ray the Violinist, had the same sentiment stating, “You don’t have to communicate with as many people, so that takes a lot of [the] headache out of it for the client.” Even when employing the help of a wedding planner, or day-of coordinator, that will assist with your vendors, having one point of contact for one large aspect of your wedding will add less stress. In addition to logistics, managing the direction of your wedding music with one professional can really help when it comes to creating a cohesive auditory vision. Have the story, or performance as Thomas refers to it, of your wedding flow seamlessly between ceremony to cocktail hour and into your reception. “There is something elegant about walking down the aisle to the timeless work of Pachelbel, with his Canon in D,” said Dr. Lauren Spaulding with Nola Quartet, “but it is quite fun to see our musicians transform into rock stars as they mic up to slay your favorite Led Zeppelin guitar solos, Beyoncé jams and Taylor Swift!” Working with one musician or group really allows for the artists to take your guests musically throughout the evening. “It is really fun for guests to follow the musicians through genres and see the entire range of their high-level conservatory training,” said Spaulding. “If the musician or the band is able to curate the flow of things,” shared Thomas, “where we’re building the energy throughout the night and captivate the audience that’s the great part.” Finally, and maybe most important, is the creative aspect behind choosing this route for your nuptials. What is a New Orleans wedding without a little fun and creativity? Performers and groups like

T-Ray, Nola Quartet and Fat City Swing Band can add an unexpected and memorable moment. Both Thomas and the Nola Quartet are known for taking popular songs and transforming them into classical-sounding showstoppers — in the style of the Netflix show “Bridgerton”’s modern Regency take on a soundtrack. Additionally, Fat City Swing Band can take a more vintage-sounding experience and make it accessible and fun for the modern bride and groom. Opting for one memorable musician or group not only creates a cohesive sound, but also a moment that will set your wedding apart from anyone else’s. TO NOTE

Though hiring one musician or group is logistically ideal from a couple’s perspective, Thomas shared that for the performer, depending on where the ceremony and cocktail hour/reception are held, things could potentially get a little more complex. “For me and my production team,” said Thomas, “[the The Magic of Strings entire wedding in one locaWhen it comes to the music of love, stringed instruments tion] is more ideal because have once again found a then I only have to set up new rise in popularity. Once the ceremony is over, the guests will go to cocktail hour, where I’ll just have a speaker with some easy listening. That allows for the rhythm section to get to the final spot for the swing band reception. I just have to move one speaker back to the setup and the swing band is off and rolling.” This allows for the band to cover multiple aspects of the wedding at one time. When all is said and done, it’s all about finding your perfect fit. Make your big day a little easier and worry about hiring only once. b
