he majority of a couple’s wedding budget is spent on the venue, with the second biggest expense being the food and drink — especially in New Orleans. With that in mind, we’ve expanded our offerings on the subject in our new “Cuisine and Cocktails” section in the Details department. Beginning on page 87, contributor Emma Sloan — who has written food fodder for the Southern Foodways Alliance’s “Gravy,” publication and for Vice’s food channel, “Munchies” — leads us through a host of delectable down-home favorites in “Southern Comfort;” offers up ideas for stocking the perfect New Orleans-style craft beer bar in “Beer is for Lovers;” and presents five crowd-pleasing, miniature Southern snacks that’ll have your guests chasing the hors d’oeuvers tray all night. New Orleans is of course known for its fantastic food and top-notch cocktails, so our new section offers couples ideas, practical information and tons of inspiration. Speaking of inspiration, in this issue’s ethereal fashion spread, we are transported to an enchanted forest. Inspired by William Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” our bride and groom wander the forest in a dreamlike state of bewitched intrigue. Don’t fret, the story has a happy ending and will provide dreamy inspiration for your Big Day. This issue celebrates not only nature, but also natural beauty. In “Five Pre-Wedding Workouts,” reporter Anne Roderique-Jones spotlights workouts that will have you wedding dress ready in no-time. Beauty editor Mirella Cameran gives us her top picks for clean and green makeup and skincare products in “Clean Beauty,” on page 28, so you can sport a fresh natural glow on your wedding day and beyond. Are you worried about getting to the church on time and through the reception without incident? Then you’ll want to proceed directly to page 46 to read tips from four of New Orleans’ top wedding planners. Reporter Amy Gabriel gets the scoop on what these pros wish every bride would do for her wedding. Settle in with a glass of wine or bubbly and dig into this new issue. I recommend doing so at the Parlor Bar in the Henry Howard Hotel or at the Ace Hotel. Both magnificent spaces are both featured in our “Locations” section and are but two of the many must-visit venues in town to consider for your wedding festivities. Monograms and Matrons Rules of the game for hyphenated monograms, married maids and men of honor by Dee Lane

Q: I’m getting married late this summer and plan to give each of my bridesmaids a monogrammed beach bag. My matron of honor was married last year and decided to keep her middle name and to hyphenate her last name: Rachel Elizabeth Henry-Landis. How should that monogram look: REH or RHL? Neither, actually. First the basic rules: Typically, with a three-word name, monograms are composed of the first name initial on the left, the middle or maiden name first initial on the right and the last name first initial in the center, larger than the other two. So for your matron of honor’s maiden name, her monogram would be: RHE In recent years, four letter monograms, especially in instances such as this, have

18 | BrideNewOrleans.com

become popular. Depending on how you want the monogram to look, you have two options: RHLE or RH-LE. Either one is appropriate, it just depends on your preference.

Q:

I have asked one of my good friends who was married and now is divorced to lead my wedding party. What is the appropriate title for her? If she had never married, she would be a maid of honor. If she was married then the term would be matron of honor, which, by the way, I really dislike. What should I do? Traditionally a maid of honor is a woman who has never been married, while a matron of honor is a married woman. In this case, the analogy is that just like a married woman went from a

SUMMER-AUTUMN 2016

Miss to a Mrs., after divorce she becomes a Ms., but can never go back to being a Miss. After divorce she would be a matron of honor. However, you do have other options. First off you can ask her which she would prefer you use and go with her choice. Also, the term “honor attendant,” which used to only be used to highlight the sister or close relative of the bride, is now being used in place of maid of honor and matron of honor for those who don’t feel comfortable with either term.

Q: My fiancé and I are having non-traditional wedding parties where instead of a maid of honor my best guy friend will stand for me, and my fiancé’s

best girl friend will stand for him. We’re happy to explain our choices to anyone who asks, but what do we put on our programs? Thanks to trailblazers before you, these terms are already in place. Your male friend would be known as the man of honor and your fiancé’s friend would be called the the best woman. There are also other options such as bride’s attendant or honor attendant, groom’s maid, best lady, best maid, and I’ve even seen best friend of honor. You can also just say “standing for the bride is _____.” Choose whichever makes you happiest and on which you, your fiancé and your attendants agree. After all, this is your day. b

Pure Barre

Pre-Wedding Workouts Five Crescent City studios get you in shape for the Big Day By Anne Roderique-Jones

I

t’s easy to indulge in New Orleans — especially with pre-wedding celebrations: a glass of bubbly here and a cake tasting there. But don’t fret — you can work it off. Several studios around town offer fitness plans that get the body in perfect condition for a wedding dress — and a honeymoon bikini, to boot. From surfing

26 | BrideNewOrleans.com

(yep!) to spinning to personal training, here are five of the best pre-wedding day workouts in the Crescent City.

Pure Barre With two locations in the New Orleans-area, Pure Barre delivers a full-body workout in just 55 minutes. Here, low-impact, isometric movements help to create long, lean muscles without

SUMMER-AUTUMN 2016

bulk — or a lot of sweat. Bonus: Results can be seen in just 10 classes. Pure Barre’s Bride-to-Be Promo includes three months of unlimited classes for $400. In addition, the New Orleans’ studios offer bridal party discounts and a bachelorette barre-ty: a fun and healthy private class for you and your besties. (Locations on Magazine Street, in Metairie

and in Mandeville.)

Higher Power Nola Higher Power Nola is a distinct (and powerful!) combination of cycling, yoga and TRX that makes for a great workout. Owner Mark Berger says, “We believe in the balance of mind, body and spirit. Therefore, we offer cardio with our high-energy cycling; the

flow and mindfulness with power yoga; and strength and conditioning with TRX classes. We cater to all fitness levels and believe in a community environment that is inclusive and a lot of fun!” The six-week, $250 bridal package includes an individual fitness and nutrition consultation, unlimited classes and five guest passes. (Located at 514 City Park Ave.)

Pole Perfect Fitness This sassy French Quarter studio ensures a workout that’s fun, slimming and toning — all while performing on a pole. While it’s totally innocent, it’s not easy. According to owner and instructor Kimberly Lobert, “Pole dancing is both a cardio and strength workout, which can burn 800 calories an hour.” This exercise effectively combines strength training, endurance and flexibility into one activity. And for what it’s worth: Climbing the pole is much more difficult than a bicep curl. Pole Perfect’s Bridal Intensive package consists of three private sessions and two group classes ($400) that provide a full body workout, plus an extra boost of confidence for the Big Day. The studio also offers bachelorette parties so that your entire group can dance while getting fit. (Located at 333 Canal St., #380)

City Surf Fitness Who says you can’t go surfing in the Big Easy? Introducing its first location outside of Texas, City Surf Fitness in Uptown offers six signature classes that incorporate balance, yoga, barre, Pilates, cardio and

strength training techniques — all while balancing on the signature stabilized surfboard. According to owner Becky Hardin, Surf City is great for brides because of the quick results. She says, “Each trainer and class brings something different, so your routine will never be the same twice; you don’t get bored with City Surf like other workouts.” She adds, “City Surf will tone all the areas that you’ll be showing off in your dress, like your shoulders, arms, and waistline, [and] you’ll see a difference in your whole body and feel incredibly strong as well.” A great option for pre-wedding workouts is the six-month autodraft membership for $95 per month or a 12-month autodraft at $85. This includes two free friend passes, early invites to events (the studio has a huge backyard for parties) and a free shirt. (Located at 5924 Magazine St.)

Prime Fitness RX Situated in the CBD, Prime Fitness is a sleek and modern gym that’s open ‘round the clock. Husband-and-wife owners, Sacha and Mark Owens, both professional trainers and nutritionists, offer customized personal coaching and food counseling that’s specific for each brideto-be. Essentially, this duo is an expert in all-things that require you to get it in gear for the wedding day. At Prime Fitness RX, you can also participate in small group classes (warning: they’re tough) that combine body weight, resistance, suspension, cardio and core training. After, detoxify in the dry sauna for extra glow-y skin. (Located at 607 Julia St.) b BrideNewOrleans.com |

Naturally Beautiful Your guide to barely there bridal make up By Mirella Cameran

flawless, lit from within, natural look is perfect for any bride. It is also currently one of the hottest trends in beauty. However, that fresh, dewy

30 | BrideNewOrleans.com

glow can be hard to achieve, taking hours of work and layers of products. That’s why we put together the insider’s guide on how to create the barely-there but beautiful look.

SUMMER-AUTUMN 2016

Opt for a light or dark brown shade instead of black and top with clear gel

Lips Exfoliate first then apply a rosy pink shade, blot with a tissue so the color is not too heavy and swipe some non sticky gloss without shimmer or sparkle

Favorite Product Revlon’s PhotoReady Skinlights — all day radiance with a dewy finish. Wear it over makeup to highlight and contour

First, check your skin undertones by looking at the color of the veins in your wrist. If they appear more green, blue or purple you have cool, pink undertones. If they appear more yellow or olive you have warm, golden undertones. Generally speaking, cool undertones are most flattered by a spectrum of cool, neutral tones of blue, green, mauve, pink, peach and purple. Earth tones such as brown, beige, gold, orange, orange-red are most flattering for warm skin tones. Next find the perfect foundation and concealer. “Matching skin tones can be tricky but not impossible,” says makeup and hair artist, John Wright, who works with celebrities such as Cate Blanchett and January Jones. When purchasing a foundation, you should always check the shades on your neck or jawline in the natural daylight to ensure a perfect match.” Wright says to always take into consideration that your body might be various shades. For example, you might have tanned shoulders and arms, but use sunscreen to protect your face, making it a lighter shade. “I usually worked with a deeper foundation than their normal shade, and use bronzing powders to balance the skin tones on the cheeks, forehead and sides of the neck,” says

Wright. “The bronzing powder should be similar to your deepest skin tone. I then use a blush to add softness and finish the look.” As far as make-up colors are concerned, Wright recommends sticking with a single palette, “Too many colors can confuse and using colors in the same range are best for a natural and soft effect,” says Wright. Bearing in mind your undertones and overtones, there are broad guidelines as to which colors will enhance your features most effectively. It’s also helpful to identify models or celebrities who share your coloring and complexion and decide which looks you like best. Then either pick similar shades yourself or work with an artist to build your own look around these colors.

FAIR (Emma Stone) Light pink, coral, cream, cool blue, green and metallics

MEDIUM SKIN (Jennifer Garner) Nudes, spicy browns, earthy green, bronze, orange, reds, peach, pink

HAIR

Mane Attraction The best hair styles for your hair type By Mirella Cameran

T

hin, thick, curly or straight, with enough time and effort, you can grow and style your hair into any look you want for your wedding day. However, top stylists agree, picking a style that suits your hair type makes it easier to achieve. It will also last longer and be easier for you to recreate yourself for the next day brunch or honeymoon. So how do you know whether a slicked backed do is working with Mother Nature or against her? Here’s our guide packed with tips from the experts.

Wavy and Curly Hair Whether you have Beyonce

32 | BrideNewOrleans.com

or Nicole Kidman type curls, New Orleans hair stylist Biba Islah Neville has the same advice. “Work with what you’ve got and embrace your curls and waves,” says Neville. “They can easily create a soft, romantic shape when loosely pinned up or worn down.” You can flat iron out the curls but too much humidity or dancing and those curls will creep back, disrupting your look.

Straight Hair Neville is also a fan of pin straight styles as seen on stars such as Mila Kunis and Olivia Wilde. “Bone straight styles look stunning when hair is sleeked

SUMMER-AUTUMN 2016

back in the front, with a sharp side or middle part,” says Neville. “But the hair shouldn’t be too tight on the scalp, especially at the front, as it can look like there’s no hair in the photographs. Framing with a few strands of hair or a loose, soft braid across the crown of the head will soften the look. “Alternatively, adding a soft curl or wave at the ends will give a more romantic style but be careful as some types of straight hair will go limp after curling with a curling iron. It’s important therefore to pin curl the hair, let it cool, then spray with a light hair spray. After that, you can take it down and style it. For an up-do,

it’s fine to use a curling iron as it will create the desired shape and hold.”

Thick Hair If your tresses are Jennifer Hudson or J-Lo thick, you have ample opportunities for glamorous up-dos, braids and twisted styles. To help tame thick tresses into shape, use a styling serum or pomade, to, create structure, texture and prevent flyways. If the weight of the hair at the crown is causing flatness, a little ‘60s trick will help according to Kristen Bretz, a stylist at Hair Metal Salon in Brooklyn. “Gently tease sections of the hair with a rat-tail comb, using a light

hairspray if necessary, for extra lift,” says Bretz. “Keep aside one small section in the front, gently lay that section of hair over the shape you have created and spray in place.”

best option. It’s not as tempting to touch which increases oil production and any oiliness that develops over the day will be less noticeable in an off-the-face, structured look.

Thin and Fine Hair

Colored or Chemically Treated Hair

Celebrities with thin hair, such as Cameron Diaz and Karlie Kloss, often sport luscious locks. “If you want your hair to achieve maximum volume, and long lasting style, set it wet with curlers or pins then style,” says Neville. “If you choose an up-do, you will not have to worry about your hair going limp and a few clip-in hair extensions will create the effect you are looking for. “Braided styles will make your hair appear too thin, so avoid them especially if you are blonde. If you wear your hair down, add soft curls or waves to create volume. Avoid a bang or too much hair out on the hairline, the hair will either fall flat or stick to forehead if it is too hot outside or you sweat from nerves.”

Oily Hair L’Oreal Paris Celebrity Stylist Mara Roszak, who styles Emma Stone’s and Kate Mara’s hair, suggests trying to reduce the oiliness before the Big Day by just rinsing hair instead of washing it with shampoo every time. “Consider rotating a no-poo or cleansing conditioner into your routine,” says Roszak. Everyone’s hair is different, but I would say after about a couple of weeks to a month’s time, you should notice a difference.” In terms of styles, a low maintenance up-do is the

If you hair is damaged from curling irons or dying, it can still look healthy and fabulous by choosing the right style and using good products. A French twist or side chignon will hide any split ends. If you want to wear it down, a serum or conditioning oil will smooth cuticles and cover up imperfections.

All Hair Types With great stylists and high tech products to tap, there’s no need for brides to worry about a bad hair day. However, you’ve been styling your hair longer than anyone else and you know what it can do and what it struggles with. If you aren’t working with a hair stylist who knows your hair, tell them how your hair behaves and responds to different techniques and products. Ask your stylist to try different shampoos, conditioners and styling products to see which ones work best. Schedule a few dry runs with different looks and take photos at the beginning and end of the evening so you can see which styles last best. Once you and your stylist have worked out which look to go for and how to achieve it, resist any last minute changes. Stick to your plan and relax knowing that your hair will look perfect from the first photograph to the last. b BrideNewOrleans.com |

Big Day Bliss Top tips from four New Orleans wedding planning pros By Amy Gabriel illustration by SHAINA ANDERSON

R

aise your hand — the one with the sparkly diamond on the ring finger — if at the end of your wedding you want to have zero complaints about the way everything turned out? If your hand is high, listen up, buttercups. We caught up with four of New Orleans’ top wedding planners to find out what they wish every bride would do for her wedding. From start to finish, these tips will have you getting hitched without a hitch. Valerie Gernhauser of Sapphire Events. Her advice... Invest in your menu. “The most impactful way to make an impression is to ensure your guests don’t leave hungry and have plenty of options. Select an array of passed items that include approachable, familiar items and some outside-the-box items. The presentation is everything, so don’t overlook the display of how the items will be tray passed, and ask your caterer about options that will fit for your decor aesthetic. Our New Orleansstyle receptions call for plenty of action stations and interesting food offerings to keep your guests satiated throughout the night — from Southern picnic to the tastes of Louisiana, consider grouping like-items together at the station to present items that will be paired well together. And a late-night pass is always encouraged — crawfish cake sliders, truffle fries in bamboo cones or even beignets and cafe au lait shooters will be a big hit. Also, pay homage to the cocktails. Enhance the traditional liquor options with unexpected elements like a beer tap wall that guests can serve from directly, or a bespoke selection of several mixology beverages that bring an extra special VIP touch to the night.”

Belinda Belk of Blue Gardenia Events. Her advice... Be mindful of the order of, and what you actually want to be part of, the ceremony. “It happens all the time. Brides get caught up in booking vendors and setting the guest list and on moving onto the next deadline, and then they lose sight of want they actually want to be said at the ceremony. Make a point to plan that out and be prepared. This includes the standing order of friends. Everyone you pick is either a good friend or a family member and although it can be awkward, you have to pick which order you want them to stand in in advance — at the rehearsal is not the time to do that. People will be getting into town, rushing and even arriving late, so that should already be

established. One thing I like to ask is for is a cheat sheet on brides and groomsmen. I’ll attach a snapshot of the person and a small note about who each is so I’m not walking into a sea of people and not knowing who to look for. Handing over intel on your group is so great for organization.” Angela DiVincenti of Angela Marie Events. Her advice... Trust your planner through and through. “I know so many brides who hired someone and [didn’t] listen to any advice that planner suggested. They are also running around on their wedding day or sending family to ‘check on the planner.’ Why hire that planner if you think she cannot follow through? A planner knows the ropes and what is necessary to make your day easy and stress free. A bride can be headstrong and still have a planner, as long as she is open to ideas and suggestions. The whole point of a planner is guidance — you’ve hired someone to make your day the best it can be. Planners are top dollar and a luxury — don’t waste that because you think your every idea is the best. With all of that being said — not everyone is a great planner. As you would with any vendor, do your homework. And honestly, down South, word of mouth is your best bet!”

Robyn Sedgebeer of Blue Skies Events Nola. Her advice... Understand the pitfalls of Pinterest. “Pinterest, greatest thing ever! I can personally spend endless hours creating multiple dream weddings. But, there is a huge downfall that Pinterest has: it doesn’t show you how much things cost. When stalking gorgeous sparkly engagement rings or looking at beautiful floral arrangements, you need to keep a realistic outlook on it all. When showing your florist photos please keep an open mind that maybe the flowers aren’t in season or are just way out of your budget. Consider what you love most about the colors, look, style, etc…then he or she can show you what can be done within your budget. This goes with all of your vendors. We have all seen Pinterest fails, whether it’s a picture you tried to take with your dog and your engagement ring or a romantic new way to take a picture with you and your fiancé... some things just don’t work. Leave it to your amazing vendors to show you how to create a Pinterest wedding within your budget and style. Who knows your wedding could be the next trend on Pinterest.” b BrideNewOrleans.com |

Southern Comfort Down-home favorites get a sophisticated Big Day makeover By Emma Sloan

M

ost Southerners have a water-stained cookbook or two filled with recipes collected, modified and passed down between generations of family members. These dishes are sacred to family dinners, so it only makes sense that a wedding would feature these savory favorites enjoyed since childhood. Southern comfort food — which in

92 | BrideNewOrleans.com

New Orleans includes Creole fare — is a nationwide trend as of late, but to Southerners, comfort foods are a way of life. Many Southerners cite comfort foods as their favorite eats, and with some culinary upgrades, these timeless dishes can be elegant enough to enjoy at a wedding. Serving upgraded Southern comfort classics at your wedding or rehearsal dinner allows you and your

SUMMER-AUTUMN 2016

guests to dine on familiar favorites in a more casual setting than a stuffy sit down dinner would allow for, and it also offers a chance for out of town visitors to experience a true Southern meal. “A wedding has people from all walks of life, so if you tried to do a very gourmet dinner, people won’t be very happy, but if you do foods they like and know, they’ll be a lot happier,” says Chef Guy

Sockrider of Tomas Bistro, known for its elegant French Creole fare. This is especially true at weddings with long guest lists comprised of a spectrum of ages, backgrounds and tastes. Simple yet savory foods will go over well no matter what — they’re familiar to most people and not intimidating to those unfamiliar with Southern cuisine. Executive Chef Evan

Benson of Joel Catering agrees. Joel Catering is familiar with entertaining wide audiences with upscale meals. “People wanted to get away from the appearance of fine dining in catering and towards more accessible foods for everybody,” says Benson. “People like sea scallops and foie gras but not all guests are familiar with that type of food.” In addition to appealing to a wide audience, comfort foods are also easy to pair with cocktail choices, especially simple and timeless cocktails such as old fashions and the French 75. As a result, down-home favorites such as grits, macaroni and cheese, and roasts have begun to crop up more and more at rehearsal dinners and weddings. Staging service stations with chef attendants rather than long buffet lines creates a warm environment for guests to mingle and have small tastes rather than wait in line for a plate laden with heavy food. Service stations also allow guests to interact with chefs and observe food preparation that is customizable for each plate. Choosing familiar and common foods does not equate with settling for familiar and common tastes. High quality and high end ingredients elevate comfort classics into knockouts. Favorites such as pot pies, soups, deviled eggs and corn fritters can all be dressed up with the right preparation and presentation. Grits stations are one of the best ways to showcase Southern home cooking. Grits slow cooked over a low flame and mixed

with heavy cream and mascarpone cheese makes the standard cornmeal mush a dreamy cloud of velvety goodness. Adding barbecue shrimp, short ribs or roasted vegetables makes the classic extra savory, and adding the options for extra toppings such as bacon, cheeses and chives makes each bowl highly customizable. Fried chicken is another great way to show guests the possibilities of Southern cooking. Chicken pan fried in a grease filled cast iron skillet is a familiar image, but the addition of glazes elevates the possibility. Benson adds either boysenberry syrup or a truffle honey glaze to fried chicken to elevate the main dish into a sweet and savory favorite. As a side, macaroni and cheese with black truffles, pancetta and scallions adds a filling bite. Presentation is important to maintaining the look and feel of the foods. Skip chafing dishes in favor of metal cookware such as copper bowls and cast iron skillets to make each serving station feel like the food is being prepared in someone’s home kitchen. Guests visiting New Orleans will appreciate eating like a true local, the favorites that the bride and groom have grown up eating, but with those swanky touches. High quality ingredients and gourmet preparation ensures the food tastes good, but the presentation of these stations is equally important. The best thingd about Southern comfort food is its laid-back nature and ability to appeal to a wide variety of people, leaving guests happy and full for a long night of celebration. b

Beer is for Lovers Say I-Do to brew with a New Orleans-style craft beer bar at your reception By Emma Sloan

N

ew Orleans is renowned for its love of libations, so it’s no surprise the craft beer trend has taken off in the city. Showcase the Big Easy’s burgeoning beer scene at your wedding with a craft beer bar featuring the city’s most delicious local offerings. Forget the ubiquitous Anheuser-Busch products in favor of choice selections from breweries across the Crescent City. The craft beer world is vast, so have fun when making your selections. “Unless you have a crazy brand loyalty, mix up the breweries,” Kirk Coco, owner

94 | BrideNewOrleans.com

of NOLA Brewing says. “Most craft beer drinkers like a lot of different types of beers, so I think variety in type and brand is important. More and more people are choosing craft beers [at their weddings] or at least [as] an option because more people are drinking it in general.” With the wide range of flavors, breweries and types, the field can seem overwhelming. But this is to your advantage because you can make the bar highly customizable to your tastes. (And taste-testing brews is a great way to blow off wedding planning steam.) Be adventurous when making

SUMMER-AUTUMN 2016

choices for the final bar, but also include some tried-andtrue standbys that will appeal to most guests. At least four different beers are needed to make a flight for out of town guests to sample, but the more choices available the better. Mix up types of beers and breweries to give guests a big taste of the city’s craft offerings, and consider the season when choosing. “Try to cover the full range: light, hoppy, saison, dark,” says COO Mark Logan of Second Line Brewery in Mid-City. “Stouts and porters are typically not the best thing during summer weddings.

For a winter wedding, have a hearty beer.” A simple light beer is essential for guests unfamiliar with craft brews and looking for something approachable to sip on. The NOLA Blonde Ale is a golden and crisp beer, which makes it good choice for folks not used to drinking craft beers. Other brews to consider serving for mass appeal could be Covington Brewhouse’s Kölsch, a crisp wheat ale, Second Line Brewing’s Batture Blonde Ale for an effervescent beer, or Urban South Brewery’s Charming Wit, a light and fruity beer that is perfect to complement a hot summer day. Dark beer lovers will want a hearty ale no matter what the weather calls for, so be sure to include at least one in your lineup. Abita Amber, a local favorite year round, and the NOLA Brown Ale are crisp darker brews that satisfy the dark beer cravings without being too heavy. Try the Bayou Bock by Covington Brewhouse for a creamier dark beer. IPAs are bold in taste, so add at least one to the final cut. NOLA’s Hopitoulas IPA is a favorite among IPA fans, or try Chafunkta Brewing Company’s Voo Ka Ray IPA for a less bitter but still hoppy brew. Most of the local breweries have tours and beautiful outdoor spaces to learn about and enjoy their libations, so choosing the final lineup of beers should be an educational and fun adventure. Drink up! b

Restaurant R’evolution’s beer-battered crab beignets

Dressed Rehearsal Miniatures of your Southern fried favorites for the cocktail reception or passed hors d’oeuvres By Emma Sloan photographs by jeffrey johnston

There are certain Southern snacks that are always crowd pleasers. As guests mingle with cocktails between the ceremony and dinner at the reception, consider offering up tasty bites inspired by local restaurants to entice guests.

Picnic Power: Purloo’s Southern Board is a great inspiration for appetizers. Each board is laden with pimento cheese, green tomato chutney, deviled eggs muniere, fried pickles and boiled peanuts.

Cheesy Goodness: Crispy and gooey grilled cheese bites will keep guests happy as they sip and socialize. Use St. James Cheese Company’s version as inspiration: multigrain bread filled with gruyere and caramelized onions.

96 | BrideNewOrleans.com

SUMMER-AUTUMN 2016

Spice it Up: Bites of spicy and smoky Andouille and boudin sausages will keep people coming back for more. See Emeril’s version for inspiration.

Sweet and Salty: Miniature chicken and waffles are the king of brunch. Morsels of this savory dish drizzled with local honey will keep guests happy until dinner. Try La Petite Grocery’s version for a quick lesson in perfection.

The Beignet Way: If you are looking for a savory beignet, try Restaurant R’Evolution’s beer-battered crab beignets with remoulade as inspiration for mini bites. Or, bring out bite sized beignets covered in powdered sugar for dessert with mini cafe au laits to prep people for the after party, just like at Cafe du Monde.

This 234-room hotel is more than just a place to lay your head; it’s a complete destination that packs the full New Orleans experience — from art, to music, to food — into one stylish locale. Ideal for nuptials of all size, the 4,000 square-foot Barnett Hall can accommodate large groups, or be split into two, more intimate spaces. LOCATIONS Henery Howard Hotel

Luxe Locales Hotels, halls, plantations and other places for everything from the rehearsal to the reception By Kim Singletary

W

hether you are looking for a place to hold your reception; an all inclusive venue for rehearsals, I-do’s and dancing the night away; or a luxurious room to get ready for the wedding, we’ve got you covered with our handy list of a few of New Orleans’ luxe locales.

Chateau LeMoyne Fresh off a massive renovation that concluded

100 | BrideNewOrleans.com

in January, the Chateau LeMoyne pairs an 1847 exterior with modern luxuries. Ideal for weddings of up to 125, the upscale boutique hotel offers flexible indoor and outdoor spaces. “A majority of our couples will have their ceremony in the courtyard,” says director of sales, Adrienne Breaux. “It’s a gorgeous private space adorned with brick that features a pond in the back.” The adjacent ballroom and SUMMER-AUTUMN 2016

royal room create a seamless transition from ceremony to reception. Brides should be sure to book the Bienville Suite — one of 11 suites on the property, the 740-squarefoot space comes complete with a balcony overlooking the courtyard, which is perfect for photos.

Old No. 77 Hotel & Chandlery Are you looking to hold your ceremony or reception at The

Chicory or Race & Religious? The Old No. 77 Hotel and Chandlery partners with the two iconic venues for larger weddings and provides an ideal spot to call home. A celebration of New Orleans’ timeless style, the 167-room hotel features three suites, all with separate seating areas, and rooms featuring exposed brick, wood floors and local artwork. There’s even an extensive pets welcome policy that provides everything from Alison Gootee photo

pet beds and toys to pet room service. Signature amenities for humans include a range of specialty pillow types and Spotify menu.

Stella Plantation For those looking for a more bucolic setting, Stella Plantation is a real, family-run working plantation (fruit and pecans) located 20 miles southeast of New Orleans. Here, 1,500 acres of countryside beckons couples to craft their own version of a perfect day under 250-year-old oak trees. “We’re all about personalized attention,” says event manager Caroline Parrone. “That’s why we only host one event per day. There is no limit to what you can do out here — host a S’mores and hot chocolate bar near the fire pit, have a second line, enjoy welcome cocktails in the carriage house — we have the space for anything you want.” And if you’re looking for something faster and simpler, Stella Plantation just began offering an elopement package designed for weddings from 10 to 50 people hosted within three months.

Rosy’s Jazz Hall “It’s really all about our history,” says Steve Zweibaum, owner of Rosy’s Jazz Hall. “We were this incredible music club back in the ’70s [welcoming greats like Dizzy Gillespie and Ella Fitzgerald] and we try to keep some of that spirit alive. Strictly a private event venue, Rosy’s has been hosting weddings for 16 years. Ceremonies here take place in the breathtaking

two-story glass atrium beneath two giant live Ficus trees reaching 30 feet high and can accommodate up to 200. Receptions of up to 300 commandeer the entire main floor, from the jazz hall to the atrium and patio. Highlights include a large elevated stage in the main room and an elevated stained glass bar.

Juliana’s Wedding and Event Center The newest wedding destination on the Northshore, Juliana’s Wedding and Event Center opened in Ponchatoula in October 2015. Offering an ultra romantic backdrop of oak groves dripping in Spanish moss (lit with an outdoor chandelier and twinkle lights if you desire), the 8,000 square feet of event space can be tailored to fit any style of event. Where Juliana’s really shines, however, is in their stress-free custom wedding packages and all-inclusive rates. “We have everything here,” says o wner Don Jones, “from a kitchen with fulltime staff to cake tables and stands.” Juliana’s also features a spacious bridal suite complete with a side room with lighted vanity.

La Maison Du Lac For couples dreaming of a wedding on the water, La Maison Du Lac is the best, and only, option in town. “The Lake House” sits on Lakeshore drive on the South Shore overlooking Lake Pontchartrain. Spanning 8,000-squarefeet, the venue recently completed extensive renovations in January that include a new outdoor garden area and stunning BrideNewOrleans.com |

Imagine being handed the keys to a gorgeous boutique hotel from the late 1800s right in the heart of the Garden District. That’s essentially what happens when you have your wedding at the Henry Howard Hotel, named after the architect of the elegant building. “This is a small property which lends itself well to groups because it allows them to take over the entire space,” says co-owner, Maggie Kaatz. “There are so many little gathering places throughout the hotel, along with 18 rooms.” Greet guests with a welcome drink under the 12-foot ceilings of the grand parlor. Revel in the spacious, light-filled three-room bridal suite. Enjoy a real New Orleans courtyard wedding. The Henry Howard is filled with possibilities. “Each room is different,” Kaatz says. “One may have an exposed brick fireplace, while another features a large stove original to the property.” b

How to ensure you get the wedding photography of your dreams By Kelly Massicot

W

edding photography is arguably one of the most important parts of a wedding. These images are meant to last a lifetime. The question is, how does a couple ensure they snag the wedding photos of their dreams? Here you will find a list of tips to remember

104 | BrideNewOrleans.com

and added advice from local photographers Caitlin Barry of Caitlin B Photography and Tim Black of Tim Black Photography.

Research photographic style Doing your homework is important when hiring wedding vendors. It is easy

SUMMER-AUTUMN 2016

to get caught up in who your relatives or friends worked with for their weddings, but doing firsthand research will help ensure your style and vision come together. Researching photographers and their signature “look” is extra important. Create a list of your favorite style of photography, such as fine art,

modern or photo journalistic for example, as well as a list of photographers. Comparing both lists side-by-side will help to determine which photographer’s style matches with your vision for the day.

Choose a venue with photos in mind Many factors come into play

when choosing a venue; budget and location usually being at the top of the list. However, aesthetic factors around the space should be equally as important. Will the lighting in the space affect the photos? Is there a well-lit, visually interesting area (maybe in the form of an exposed brick wall or dramatic archways) for family pictures or as a backdrop for the cake? Taking the time to scope out these details in a venue will make for stunning photos.

Book Early The wedding photos of your dreams will not be possible if the wedding photographer of your dreams is already booked on the day of your wedding. Tim Black, destination photographer and owner of Tim Black

Photography, tells us that most wedding photographers are booked anywhere from one to two years in advance, especially during “peak” wedding seasons. It is always wise, once you have decided on the date and location of the wedding, to book your photographer first. This will give couples a higher percentage of booking their ideal choice and will also get the ball in motion for engagement photos, bridal portraits and any other photography sessions the couple requests.

Meet With Photographer in person It may not seem as important or it may seem obvious, but either way, meeting with your photographer in person SUMMER-AUTUMN 2016

benefits all of those involved. Caitlin Barry with Caitlin B Photography says, “When you meet in person, you get a feel for the photographers personality and how everything will run the day of the wedding.” Talking with them face to face will give you the tools you need to effectively communicate your wants, needs and wishes for the day and will also give the photographer the insight into you and your fiancé’s personalities. Knowing you and your fiancé as a couple gives the photographer the tools to capture those images that will mean the most.

Don’t skimp on budget Budget is always the first conversation that pops up after the bride says “yes.”

Divvying up the allocated finances for each area of a wedding can be a difficult task. Budgeting for less noticible and less expensive items such as photography is as essential as high ticket elements like the venue and catering. Barry suggests couples get more advice on packages. “Most of the time you can substitute or add to your package,” says Barry. “So, don’t be afraid to ask the photographer.”

Engagement session test shoot Scheduling your engagement photos with your photographer allows you to see their style before the wedding. Instead of working with someone other than your photographer for pre-wedding needs, this gives the couple

and the photographer a chance to feel out the situation and plan the perfect flow of events the day of the wedding.

Make sure your photographer brings an assistant or second photographer Barry says that making sure your photographer has a second photographer allows for multiple things the day of the wedding. If something happens to your photographer day of, you still have the wedding photos you desire. Furthermore, not only does this give couples more photos to choose from, but it also ensures that the key shots the couple is looking for are executed. Additionally, Barry notes that having a second shooter allows for alternate angles

and ultimately better photos.

Post Production importance: Not every couple thinks of questioning the photographer’s post-production practices, but it can be vital. Barry urges couples to make sure the photographer will back their pictures up on multiple hard drives. It is always a better safe than sorry situation when it comes to important pictures of your Big Day. Black advises couples to ask how many of photos they will receive following the wedding and if the photos the couple receives will be watermarked or not. It’s good to also make sure you understand any copyright practices for the photos as well as everything you will need to order copies of your photos. b BrideNewOrleans.com |

Pump Up The Volume Five music trends to incorporate into your Big Day By Sarah Ravits

B

rides getting hitched in New Orleans — a city known for its music — will want to devote some extra time into planning the perfect soundtrack. This doesn’t have to be high-pressure and is probably one of the most fun parts of wedding planning. Music is universally appreciated and there are so many ways to

110 | BrideNewOrleans.com

customize your ceremony, reception and after party.

Consider A Music Venue For the Ceremony If you’re a music lover, consider incorporating that passion into your wedding venue itself. New Orleans has no shortage of music halls, whether you’re looking for a classic French Quarter spot such

SUMMER-AUTUMN 2016

as Preservation Hall — with its small front room and intimate outdoor patio — or going with a bigger, more upscale location, such as the sleek Civic Theater. House of Blues also hosts special events and can accommodate both the ceremony and reception.

No More ‘Here Comes the Bride’ DJ Jacob Towe, whose

company handles ceremonies, receptions and after parties, says he has noticed a lot of brides are turning to more contemporary music when it comes to walking down the aisle. “I haven’t played the Wedding March [note: commonly known as ‘Here Comes the Bride’] at a wedding in about seven years,” he says. “No one plays that. The original organs — no one

Greer G photography photo

does that anymore. I really encourage brides to make it fit with their personality.” Some brides choose popular songs and have them “remixed” — for example, using a string instrument version of a Beatles song to walk down the aisle.

Booking Multiple Acts In the past couple of years, and especially this year, people have been wanting to book multiple acts and change up the genres to suit the mood. The exchange of vows is likely going to be the most serious part of the evening; after that, the mood is light and people are feeling more relaxed and celebratory — the music should reflect that. For a cocktail hour and reception, think about booking a jazz singer that’ll be romantic but festive. After dinner and drinks, when guests are cutting loose on the dance floor, consider hiring another band, maybe a funk or rock band, or a DJ who can spin a variety of songs that’ll keep people on their toes.

Incorporating ‘Environmental Projection’ While Music Is Playing DJ Jacob Towe says he seamlessly blends the aesthetics and décor in with the music and mood. He is able to project a digital environment that completely changes the look of the room from a screen. “People are blown away by it,” he says. He takes measurements of the room and creates graphics to project onto the walls. “We cut out where the windows and

doors are on the computer, and we essentially paint the walls with graphics. During cocktail hour, we can show bubbles going up the wall. Once we did a wedding with a Parisian theme, so we projected images of the Eiffel tower. It’s a huge décor statement that you don’t have to construct, build or install; it’s much faster to project it.” He also uses CO2 cannons that enhance the special effects. “Usually we have the bride come up between the booth and start off the after party by shooting the cannon into the crowd.” This is the same kind of cannon that is used at major music festivals and high-end clubs.

Get a Brass Band and Have A Second-Line One of the most distinctive traditions in New Orleans is the second line. If you’re moving locations — think from a cathedral to a hotel or other event venue — consider incorporating the second line. Most weddings in other cities incorporate driving or taking transportation; the beauty of New Orleans is that you can literally parade to your next stop. Hiring a brass band is a great way to celebrate not only your freshly exchanged vows, but also the city and its traditions. Second lines are also great fun for out-of-town guests to witness and experience, and bystanders always pause to appreciate them, too. Having a second line is an interactive way to display the sense of love and community in a city that brings strangers and friends together through its music. b

transportatio n something a bit more raucous. You’ve probably seen similar forms of transportation blasting tunes and strobe lights as they careen through the downtown streets most weekend nights. A party bus is a staple of the city’s nightlife, and can keep your wedding reception going long after you’ve left the dance floor. Royal Coach, 22201 MCH Rd. Ste. ouisiana summers are as hot as crawfish straight out of the boiling pot. By the time you’ve said your vows, cut the cake and danced into the night, the bayou humidity had had its way with dresses, suits and moods. Finishing off the night with the proper transportation is a crucial way to leave on a high note. New Orleans exudes loads of charm, character and romance, so why not combine the three while planning your grand exit? Here’s a handy list of five getaway cars — from the classic to the more, let’s say, “modern” — so you and your betrothed can depart from your wedding in style.

Trolley

Rolls Royce

Don’t worry, you can still ride off into the sunset in a classic Crescent City trolley even if your wedding isn’t on the one of the town’s main streetcar lines. Limousine Livery provides gorgeous refurbished streetcars free of both cable restraints and pesky tourists. What’s more, the renovated vehicle’s cushioned seats are an enormous improvement from the city’s current hardwood offerings, so you can cozy up and cool off next to your new spouse without fear of splinters or snags in your swanky attire. Limousine Livery, 4333 Euphrosine St., 561-8777, limolivery.com.

Like a June wedding, a Rolls Royce never really goes out of style. So, if you’re having one, why not indulge in the other? Alert Transportation offers a breathtaking vintage ride for that post-reception getaway, and can even supply complimentary champagne for recent brides and grooms. Travelling off while sipping on bubbly in a car equipped for royalty is hardly a bad way to cap off a spectacular evening. Alert Transportation, 3 West Bank St., 362-4145, alerttransportation.com.

If disco balls or speaker-shattering music aren’t your thing, then relaxing on an old-school horse-drawn carriage may be the best option. These iconic staples of the French Quarter harken back to more elegant times, and what the horse (or mule) may lack in speed it makes up for in charm. Since 1941, Royal Carriages of New Orleans has offered a stable of ride options for customers, and can cap off that perfect, archetypal Crescent City wedding. Classic Limousine Hey, they’re used so often for a reason. Sometimes understated makes the best statement, and Bonomolo Limousines has available both Chrysler 300- and Lincoln Towncar-style rides that are as tried-and-true as black tuxes and white wedding gowns. Both options come equipped with the standard posh limo fare, but won’t overshadow the real stars of the wedding — you and your new spouse. Bonomolo Limousines, 1401 Lafitte St., 522-0892, bonolimo.com. b

Check It Twice There’s a lot that goes into wedding planning, so don’t feel bad if you’re having a hard time keeping track of it all. Use our handy checklist to stay organized illustration by shaina anderson

10-12 Months To Go __ You’re engaged! Make sure you celebrate with your fiancé, friends and family. __ Nail down the basics. Where are you getting married? Who’s paying for what? What is your budget? How many guests will be there? __ Alert the wedding party. Decide who you want in your wedding party and ask them as soon as you can. __ Pick the date. Check with your family members and wedding party before you make a final decision so there are no huge time conflicts.

148 | BrideNewOrleans.com

__ Find a wedding planner. If you’re planning on using a wedding planner, find one in the early stages. He or she will make all the craziness more manageable. __ Book your ceremony and reception location. Where you get married will affect a lot of your planning decisions, so reserving a place should be at the top of your to-do list. __ Insure your ring. Your engagement ring is special, but it’s also expensive. Make sure you get it insured, just in case. __ Book officiant. Make sure your preferred officiant has your wedding date on the calendar.

SUMMER-AUTUMN 2016

__ Write thank you notes for engagement gifts. You will most likely receive a few gifts right after your engagement. Send a thank you note for each gift within three months of receiving it. __ Take engagement photos. Book a session with a professional photographer so you have a few nice photos of you and your fiancé for save-the-dates, newspaper announcements and more. Some photographers will include an engagement shoot with a wedding package. __ Pick your colors. Think about your wedding colors and the overall look of your day. Are you going for a classic look or trendy? Vintage

or glamorous? Your color scheme will guide you through other big decisions, such as the bridesmaid dresses and the groomsmen’s ties.

bands is usually less stressful than shopping for an engagement ring, but carve out a time when you and your fiancé can go look together.

6-9 Months To Go

__ Finalize the rehearsal dinner. Once you’ve decided on the location, book your rehearsal dinner.

__ Interview and select vendors. Make sure you book the “big ticket” items, such as the photographer, the caterer, the florist and the entertainment, early. __ Send out save-the-dates. The typical rule on sending save-the-dates is six months before your wedding, but send them earlier if you’re inviting a lot of out-of-town guests so they can book flights. __ Go dress shopping. You need an appointment at most wedding boutiques, so call a few of your favorite stores to set up a time. __ Register. Register at two or three stores. Choose items at a variety of prices so everyone can find something they can afford. Add more gifts than you think you need so your friends and family have some options. __ Think about the rehearsal dinner. It’s customary that the groom’s parents host the rehearsal dinner. Talk to your future in-laws about possibilities. __ Schedule transportation. Book a limo, trolley or another form of transportation to shuttle your wedding party from the hotel to your ceremony location. Decide whether you need transportation for your guests to get from the reception to the hotel at the end of the reception. __ Plan your honeymoon. If you’re going out of the country for your trip, make sure you and your fiancé have up-to-date passports. __ Figure out your rentals. Rentals depend on the location of your wedding, but if you’re responsible for common rental items such as chairs and plates, make a list of everything you need and where you’re going to find each item. __ Book a block of hotel rooms for out-of-town guests. If you’re not familiar with the hotel, ask a hotel representative to show you a room and don’t forget to inquire about a group rate. __ Order bridesmaid dresses. If your bridesmaids live far away, give them plenty of time to buy their dresses and get them fitted.

4-5 Months To Go __ Buy wedding bands. Shopping for wedding

__ Reserve a wedding night hotel room. Where are you staying for the wedding night? If you’re not leaving for your honeymoon immediately after the reception, decide where you want to stay for the night. __ Get your dress fitted. Your wedding dress is one of the most important dresses you will wear in your life, so it should fit impeccably. Many brides plan up to three fittings. __ Decide on attire for the groom and groomsmen. Talk to your fiancé about what he wants to wear and what will match your overall color scheme. Keep the time of day in mind when researching options. __ Check in with your vendors. Make final decisions with your vendors and update them on new wedding information, such as when they should arrive. __ Order your wedding cake. Taste a few cakes before you decide on your final choice. Talk to your fiancé about a groom’s cake if he wants one.

2-3 Months To Go __ Mail out the invitations. Double-check with the post office that you have enough postage. Many wedding invitations require more than one stamp. __ Solidify the catering menu. Whether you’re doing heavy hors d’oeuvres or a sit-down meal, verify the final menu. __ Schedule your hair and makeup team. Find a good hair stylist and makeup artist to help you and your bridesmaids get ready for the day.

One Month Before __ Send your wedding party an itinerary. Make sure your family and friends know where and when to be for the wedding day so everyone shows up at the right place at the right time. __ Enjoy a facial. Everyone reacts differently to facials. If you’re planning on getting one, schedule it a few days before your wedding, or do a trial run months before.

__ Get your marriage license. Head to the Orleans Parish Marriage License Office in Benson Tower (1450 Poydras St., Suite 407) for your marriage certificate. The office is open Monday through Friday from 8:15 a.m. until 3:15 p.m. Visit dhh.louisiana.gov for requirements. __ Set up your second line. If you’re planning to second line at your wedding, you’re going to need a permit. Call the New Orleans Police Department Special Events Section at 658-7100 to schedule everything 15 to 20 days before your wedding day. You can also email questions to specialevents@nola.gov. __ Practice your hair and makeup. It’s best to practice with your hair stylist and makeup artists ahead of time so there are no surprises on the big day. Plan your trial run for a day you want good hair, such as your bridal shower or bachelorette party. __ Finalize the guest list. Send a final headcount to your caterer and any other vendor who needs the number.

One Week Before __ Double-check with your vendors. Touch base with everyone one more time to remind them where to go and to answer any last-minute questions they might have. __ Remind friends and family of their responsibilities. Assign duties to your wedding party or other loved ones. Who is the contact for the photographer? Who is making sure all guests get a favor? __ Get a manicure and pedicure. This can be a great bonding experience with your bridesmaids, mom and future mother-in-law. __ Put together a welcome package. If you have a lot of guests traveling for your wedding, ask the hotel if you can put a welcome basket or bag in their hotel room for when they arrive.

The Wedding Day __ Find a way to relax. Whether you go for a run or read a book in the morning, find a way to keep stress to a minimum. __ Make sure you eat something. Brides always say, “I never had time to eat anything!” Give yourself some time during the reception to have a bite. __ Have fun! You’ve made it through all the planning, now it’s time to celebrate. Enjoy your first day as a married woman. b

Something Blue

A pop of color and sass adds personality to your wedding day ensemble by Melanie Warner Spencer

If there is ever a time to splurge on impractical footwear, it’s your wedding day. Whether your dress is as white as the driven snow, a subtle ivory or even blushing pink, Badgley Mischka’s “Jeannie” crystal trim, open toe, satin pump will provide a pop of color and personality. The peep toe will show off your perfect pedi and is topped with a sparkling crystal brooch for a little extra Big Day dazzle.
