Sometimes the most often said phrases – never mind that we roll our eyes when we read or hear them – ring the truest. So now it’s my turn to use one: Saying goodbye is the hardest part. When I started with New Orleans Bride, it was June 2006 and Bride was only a 29-page section, editorially composed of a cover, six pages of fashion and a one-page article. Our last issue was 136 pages with more than 15 editorial sections, information-packed advertising sections, amazing photography and some of the chicest photo shoot styling you’ll see in any bridal magazine. This issue forward, Haley Adams has taken the editorial reigns of this magazine, working alongside art director and stylist Tiffani Reding and photographer Theresa Cassagne, spending half a year crafting the glossy perfection that readers crave, along with a cadre

of some of the most informed freelancers in the business. This issue stands testament to their talent. Almost to my first wedding anniversary, I’m here to tell you goodbye. At my wedding, even though I knew I was going to see most of my guests the next day at our brunch, I just couldn’t leave. Even as we kissed our parents one last time, told those who were also still left (at 1 a.m., mind you) thank you and walked as slowly as we could, it felt like time was moving too fast. Saying goodbye to you and working on this magazine feels a little like that. I have no doubts that New Orleans Bride will continue to thrive, and I hope that you’ll join me in watching its bright future. In addition to the services, the salon serves fruit trays and snacks, plus mimosas and other beverages to make it a real celebration. If there are five girls or more receiving three or more services, the salon automatically offers a 10 percent discount. “We are also using a great line of products which have very low aftereffects so brides can have deep cleansing facials a little before the

Manicures and pedicures are definitely the most popular services but

the bride and her party often have their hair and makeup done as well, she says. “It’s a very luxurious experience but still at a more affordable price point, right here in the heart of Metairie.” Patricia Bereciartua, co-owner of Le Visage Day Spa (8110 Hampson St., 265-8018) has this advice for brides:
“Ideally we like to see brides a few months or even a year before their wedding depending on what, if any, skin issues we need to treat.” Le Visage Day Spa offers effective facials, peels and microdermabrasion for issues such as brown spots and discoloration, acne and fine lines and wrinkles. The staff can start the customized treatments at the spa and help clients use the right products at home to enable them to achieve their goals. Nearer to the wedding day, the salon’s Vitamin C facial is popular with brides because it helps with fine lines, tone, texture and sagging. “The Vitamin C in the products we use for this, really clean, hydrate and leave the skin glowing,” Bereciartua says. “The makeup goes on so much better when the skin is ready.” To complete their look, brides need
to think about their eyebrows, as they can really differ from person-toperson. “They need to decide on how they want to look six months ahead of time in order to get them into perfect shape,” Bereciartua adds. On the day of the wedding or the rehearsal, the salon often hosts bridal parties where they serve champagne and snacks in a private area. Depending on how many events the bride is having and how long the honeymoon is, Bereciartua says, she should decide on a classic manicure or a shellac where the polish will last for at least two weeks. Le Visage Day Spa offers a bridal special that includes a half-hour manicure, an hour pedicure, an hour facial and an hour of makeup for $230. Katie Callia is the owner of My Spa By The Park (6312 Argonne Blvd., 482-2219, myspabythepark.com), a 4,800 square
foot beauty emporium with a hair salon and nail salon downstairs and treatment rooms upstairs. “We see everyone who comes through the door as a guest,” Callia says. “For brides we like to set up our yoga room, complete with complimentary refreshments, as a special area for brides to relax and enjoy themselves.” Callia adds that she likes to provide brides with a place to unwind and help prevent a breakout. The spa offers a wonderful Algo Mask facial which is great two or three days before the wedding. It is very calming and helpful for issues such as rosacea, acne and sensitive skin. It soothes the skin and prepares it for the make-up. For brides going somewhere hot on their honeymoon, Callia suggests a Vitamin C facial to help protect from the sun and probably gel nails, which lasts about three weeks so they don’t have to worry about chipping. “Our prices are competitive too, especially compared to the hotel chains downtown, which is one less thing to stress about,” Callia says. “We do all we can to help them leave calm and ready.” n www.BrideNewOrleans.com New Orleans Bride | 17

It’s easy to get jealous of your favorite celebrity when you see her walking down the red carpet with flawless skin and perfect teeth. While you may not be famous, it’s still possible for you to get that same look for your walk down the aisle. You can take advantage of all the amazing procedures and treatments available today, even if you don’t have an A-list glam squad. You can find the same services in and around New Orleans, as long as you plan ahead. If you’re looking for a stunning smile, make sure you book an appointment months in advance, suggests Dr. Darrell Bourg Jr., a family dentist with Exceptional Dental (2521 Ames Blvd., Suite C, Marrero, 340-9696, drbourg.com) and the
incoming president of the New Orleans Dental Association. “When we see brides, the biggest thing they are looking for is teeth whitening and veneers,” Bourg says. “They want to change the color or the shape of their teeth. Typically we need to see them two months before the wedding and, at the least, two to three weeks before.” With teeth whitening, brides need to know that fillings and crowns won’t change color so you could end up with a two-tone mouth. “Plus it takes time for the whitening to settle down to its 18 | New Orleans Bride Winter-Spring 2013
best color, so brides should work with a professional to achieve a cohesive look,” Bourg adds. Bourg says there are three different techniques. One is whitening in the office, which works well and is the most predictable. Another is custom trays that also work well and are cost effective. The third technique is power bleaching, which is a combination of in-office and at home treatments. There are also over-thecounter options. Veneers and caps are also a common way to achieve a beautiful smile, but brides need to plan four to six months for those. “A lot of times, the mother or father of the bride want a good looking smile and finally decide to have a crown or implant, so they need to come and see us early enough too,” Bourg says. Having a smile to compete with any Hollywood A-lister is possible, but remember to allocate the right time and resources to do it. Kristi King, a licensed aesthetician at About Face (3441 E. Causeway Approach, Suite C, Mandeville, (985)727-1887, aboutfaceco. com) suggests a six-week series of peels
that provides brides with a great way to get their skin wedding-ready. “Each peel is different and customized
to address different issues the bride-to-be may be facing,” she says. “Each one has a different active ingredient and they become a little stronger each time. The peels address fine lines and wrinkles, discoloration, acne breakouts, dullness and incorporate ingredients like enzymes and glycolic acid. The results are immediate and there is usually little downtime, King says. The aestheticians also focus on the neck area to make sure that the skin on the face and neck down to the dress line looks consistently beautiful. “Ideally brides should come in three months ahead of time,” King adds. “Each peel is $50 or if you prepay for your six peels, we can offer one free at $250. During the treatments we also help brides get into a good skincare routine at home to maximize the benefits.” For the rest of the body, brides often want to get rid of stubborn and unwanted fat. One spot to do that is Audubon Dermatology (3525 Prytania St., Suite 501, 895-3376, audubondermatology.com), where
you will find the Liposonix laser. “Liposonix is a truly revolutionary procedure which allows you to lose an inch of fat, with one procedure, in one hour to become one size smaller,” says Dr. Deirdre Hooper, co-founder
of Audubon Dermatology. “It’s an in-office procedure with typically no downtime and results are seen at around eight to 12 weeks. It safely eradicates fat from around the waistline and the fat is gone for good.” Hooper says there is hard clinical data that supports this weight loss treatment. Double blind trials have shown it is a safe, non-invasive way to eradicate fat. “Our patients have been delighted with the results,” she says. Sherril Monson describes Skin Science (3213 17th St., Metairie, 309-7048, skinsciencellc.com), which she opened in
2012, as the first “medical anti-aging spa” in the New Orleans area. Skin Science offers a membership service where you pay $119.99 a month and receive $150 worth of services plus 20 percent off products and additional services, or $79.99 a month for $100 worth of services and 10 percent off products and additional services. Services include Botox, dermal fillers, peels and laser hair removal to cellulite treatments and bodywraps. “Not only is this a great value but it also helps people, particularly brides, get into a treatment regime which they can sustain,” Monson says. “We start with a skin analysis three to nine months before the wedding to assess what the bride needs and then recommend a program for home and at the spa. All recommendations are physician-directed and there are two doctors on site. “Nearer the big day, brides often opt for treatments such as eyelash extensions and facials,” Monson continues. “With membership package optional, they can just call up and drop in, too.” New Orleanian brides now have the most up-to-date and effective treatments available to them; the key to optimizing these resources seems to be in the planning of both time and budget! Take a look at any model on the runway, and it’s easy to see what a huge difference great makeup can make. Those same models are almost unrecognizable when caught dressed-down and makeup free. Just like on the runway, eyes will be on you as a bride, so it’s natural to want to enhance your natural look as much as possible. But it’s not always a straightforward choice. Should you go all smoky eye, or should you stick with natural and nude? And what about all the fun and pretty colors out this season? Can you wear your new favorite shade of peach, or do you have to stick with classic colors to achieve a timeless look? To answer these questions and more, we turned to some of the city’s most talented makeup professionals, including Kelly LeBlanc of New Orleans Bridal Makeup (441-8025, neworleansbridalmakeup.com). “We find the ‘Mad Men’ style—soft, dewy looking skin with black on the lash bed—looks really pretty on a lot of people,” she says. This year, there are great, gold shimmery colors, which can look nice and not too trendy. While many brides stay away from shimmer, LeBlanc adds, the pigments are ground so fine now that brides can use them more liberally. Another color to try is lavender, which can look pretty when it’s high on the cheekbones. “Most important of all, girls want their grooms to cry because they look so beautiful, not because they don’t recognize them,” LeBlanc says. “So we make sure our brides never look over-trended with new ideas or colors. We incorporate a lot of blending so the look is natural and beautiful.” When thinking about your own makeup, remember to plan enough time. LeBlanc likes brides to come in between 20 | New Orleans Bride Winter-Spring 2013
four months to a year before the wedding and take a look at the salon’s look book. The salon can then work on colors that will go well with your skin tones and develop a perfect look. Laurie Baldo of Salon M (4336 Canal St., 304-6525, salonmno.com) says coppers and reds are also very popular right now and they always create a “WOW” factor. Another trend is a cleaner look for the nail, such as a soft white. Baldo suggests that brides take time researching looks they like. “The best place to start is with a photograph of other brides you’ve seen, personal photos where you like your makeup or ideas torn from a magazine,” she says. “Then you can decide if you’re going with pinks and nudes, or you want more definition and color, but always without it looking like stage makeup.” Baldo adds that Salon M has great makeup lines that are humidity resistant and waterproof. Baldo usually stays until after the wedding photographs are done, in case anyone needs a touch-up. Another local expert, Ashley Merritt at The Makeup Lab (call 666-3795 for an appointment, themakeuplabartistry.com), who has worked at New York Fashion Week and Vanity Fair to name a few, says makeup should be comfortable to wear and cohesive with everything else. “It should be inspired by the personality of the bride and the wedding day she has created,” Merritt says.
Merritt adds that brides should aim for a timeless style. “Normally we stay away from too many colored eyes and chiseled cheekbones, which is very 1980s,” she says. “Too brown and matte is too 1990s. If you have very pale skin and you go too dark, it looks too gothic. But if a bride is very colorful herself and wants it bright, we’ll make it work.“ One timeless style is a smoky eye with a red lip, but makeup artists still match it to the skin tone and personality of the bride. “If [a bride] is gentle and quiet, she might want a sheer rather than a matte red lip,” Merritt adds. One color doesn’t work for everyone though, so it’s important to find the perfect shade for you. It is also important to think of the venue and time of day. If your wedding is at night or indoors, there will be more flash photography, which means more highlighting and sculpting. “As the weather down here is so hot, we make sure all skin is prepared beforehand and then the makeup is sealed with a spray when finished,” Merritt says. “If a wedding is in the peak of summer, we’ll make sure we use primers and oil control products. We have a lot of secrets that can help.” Natalie Chosa at Glamour Therapy (3634 Magazine St., 617-8585, glamtherapynola.com)
advises brides that the dress usually tells you what kind of makeup it needs. She, too, says a lot depends on the season. For a summer wedding you should go lighter,
and for winter you can wear more reds and coppers. As for trends, Chosa says brides can also incorporate a season’s colors into flowers, ribbons in the hair or shoes to give a pop of color. “This year we’ve seen some pretty coral and orange colors which we could work in, but always go for a timeless look,” Chosa says. “We find a classic 1940s red lip and perhaps a little gold on the eyes will never look dated.” Chosa says her job is to help brides shine and be the best version of themselves that they can be. “If we make a bride feel beautiful she will look even more gorgeous,” she adds. The team at Glamour Therapy also likes to create a fun atmosphere while the bridal party gets ready. There is often champagne or lunch. “We always do the bride last and make sure she is finished an hour before the wedding so she has time to put on her dress and go,” Chosa adds. “We want her to look as fresh as possible. With such high-definition cameras, you don’t need a lot of makeup these days, but as the wedding goes on, Chosa recommends that brides should pay attention to shine and touching up the lips; the rest should be fine, even with all the emotions of the day. “If a bride starts tearing up, we recommend just dabbing the corner of the eye but no wiping,” Chosa says. “Brides should also carry a little powder, lipstick, hairspray, blotting papers and a small vial of perfume to stay fresh.” Ashley Sievert (ashley.melzer@ yahoo.com, ashleysievert.com),
an independent makeup artist who has built her business solely through referrals, says, “I usually see brides
two or three times before their weddings as I do their makeup for portraits and parties and their look just comes organically,” Sievert says. “My trademark is a ‘glamourized natural’ and just like celebrities, I ensure my brides have enough makeup on to look great both in real life and in the photographs.” One of her secrets is an “incredible foundation;” she also uses a lot of neutral tones with copper and bronze and often with a metallic tint to make the eyes pop. “I also feel that brides can use almost any color they want, as long as they don’t go overboard,” Sievert says. “It certainly depends on their personality and they might combine a brighter eye with a lighter lip, but they shouldn’t be afraid of color.” If you want to incorporate color into your wedding day makeup, Sievert recommends jewel tones because they never go out of style. She also loves to add false eyelashes because “they just never fail to work.” Tisa Camet of Tisa Beauty Bar (5421 Magazine St., 891-8992)

Whether you’ve selected an opulent ballroom or a lush garden party, food is a large component of any wedding reception, and the way you serve it will dictate the formality of your event. When you’re thinking about whether to have a sit down or a buffet-style meal, there are several factors to take into consideration. If you are looking to add a sense of formality to your reception, a sit-down dinner will make guests feel like they are eating in a fine dining restaurant. Sit-downs are generally pricier than a buffet since there is more work involved. Additionally, the meal will take up a big chunk of the evening and will provide a memorable way for both families to feast together in celebration of your first meal as husband and wife. course—the wedding cake. For couples serving a larger amount of guests, a buffet is another great choice. There’s no worrying about meeting everyone’s tastes like a sit-down dinner since they can pick and choose what they want. With more people adhering to special diets and food allergy concerns, having a few vegan and gluten-free options can take the stress out of alienating diners. Vegetarian options also add diversity to the menu, and are generally lighter than meat dishes so guests won’t feel stuffed. To get the party started, stick to

I took this photograph in New Orleans at the Degas House on May 21, 2011. This is my favorite photograph because it was the first time I got a real result using the Impossible Project’s Polaroid film. Up until this point, the film was wild and unpredictable. Sometimes the shots would be fantastic, but other times I’d get a blank blurry mess. When this photograph developed, my heart skipped a beat. It looked like a miniature painting and was completely different than anything I’ve ever taken

This photo was taken Sept. 3, 2011, at Rosie’s Jazz Hall. What made this picture so unique was that this couple was from New York, and the week prior Hurricane Irene hit them, just to fly down for their wedding during the middle of Tropical Storm Lee! I chose this because nothing could keep this amazing couple down on their wedding day. Rain or shine, it was a fabulous day. You can see how much fun they were having as they strapped on their boots to go splash in the puddles! I am proud of this shot because it not only reflects the couple’s personality, but it also reflects my point of view as a wedding photographer. This photo was taken at Rosy’s Jazz Hall on April 22, 2012. I chose this particular photo because out of all the weddings I have shot, this photo represents New Orleans in the best way. It is my favorite because it was a completely candid shot and it shows both how in love and happy the couple is, as well as, the aesthetics and
on Polaroid film. I asked my bride to stand by the window and hold the curtain back so a little more light would be on her face. I took a few digital shots, and then a couple on medium format film. For the last shot, I took out my Polaroid SX-70 and stood as still as I possibly could, leaning against the window so the picture wouldn’t blur. My bride found me online and I was booked because of my use of film and Polaroids.

There was no staging, it was a truly love filled moment. This client had viewed my website and saw posts that I often post on Facebook. She did mention that she loved my New Orleans-based photography (seeing that most of her guests were from out of the country) and the fact that she noticed that I focused on mostly a journalistic style of photography as opposed to a lot of generic and staged photos.

This image was created at the bride’s bridal session at Nottoway Plantation in February 2012. Honestly, I have a bunch of magazineworthy images from this bride. She truly blew me away when I saw her in her dress because she is such a jeans and T-shirt kinda girl! I captured her senior portraits 10 years ago so it felt like I was photographing a family member at her wedding. I had such a fun time walking around the plantation creating images and talking about her wedding day plans. We both stopped in our tracks when this image was taken. With the couch, the painting on the wall and the building, it all came together to be a great image. When I asked Megan to sit on the couch, I first showed her what I was thinking, which was funny to watch, but then the portrait fell into place as she brought her head up for the shot. When you step back and breathe before taking the shot—you feel the magic! I am most proud of this image because for many years I have seen images I wanted to be the creator of. Now I am proud of signing my name on images like Megan on the couch, which now hangs on my studio wall. Every story should have an image that represents it to the fullest.
This image was taken April 22, 2012 on the bank of the Mississippi Levee overlooking Nottaway Plantation. I love a composition that tells a story. The bride and groom were married the day before, April 21, 2012, on the steps of the plantation, so we did her bridals with Chris in tow. The wind was blowing, though, so they were chatting about her falling off the hill by herself, and that she couldn’t hear a word I was saying! We were doing bridal portraits with her alone facing into the wind and sun. Chris came in and this was a candid before we figured out how to hear each other. It was blowing about 20 miles per hour with gusts.

This photo was taken June 9, 2012, at St. Joseph’s church on Tulane Avenue in New Orleans. I chose this photo because it is incredibly romantic. I feel like I captured a genuine moment of a couple that is truly in love. I’m proud of it because I feel like it’s a perfect example of my aesthetic and it really reflects what I set out to do as a wedding photographer, which is preserve moments for couples that they can share with their family and friends long after the wedding is over. This shot was a set up outside of the church. My assistant, Ryan Hodgson-Rigsbee, held up a reflector and I just gave the couple (Nick and Marguerite) a little guidance. This couple found me through a friend. I think they liked that I’m not like most wedding photographers out there. First there’s San Francisco Plantation, which was built around 1856 and attracts more than 100,000 per year. The next stop is Laura Plantation, a Creole plantation that was built in 1805. a few bucks, but why not swing by the brewery instead? The tour and tastings are complimentary. The Abita Brewery (21084 LA 36, Abita Springs, (985) 893-3143, abita.com), located about 30 miles north of New Orleans, is like an oasis. The building seems to have been plucked from the French Quarter and tucked among stands of pine trees bordering the waters of Abita Springs. Given that most enjoy drinking craft brews and even more enjoy drinking them for free, the Abita Brewery tour is a guaranteed good time, a safe bet for wedding parties. The tour begins and ends in the Tasting Room. The bar spans an impressive 24 feet and typically boasts anywhere between 12 to 15 draft beers. A few of these are select drafts, meaning that you’ll only find them on draft at the brewery or at Abita Brew Pub located in downtown Abita Springs. Tours do not run every day, so call ahead to verify times. No one under 21 is permitted on the brewery tour. You’ll need closed-toed shoes for the walking portion. Groups of more than 25 are encouraged to make reservations. For designated drivers, the brewery provides Abita Root Beer made from Louisiana’s finest sugarcane.

According to her new website, Le Concierge calls herself the “buddy you never had, but always wanted” because she and her team can make hotel reservations, recommend great bars or suggest a spot for dinner. While most of the wardrobe talk for your wedding will revolve around the perfect white dress, it’s also important to think about what you’ll be wearing underneath it. New Orleans and its surrounding areas are lucky to have plenty of stores that specialize in lingerie for brides and their wedding parties. Whether you’re looking for sexy lingerie for the wedding night, or a great-fitting bra to wear at your wedding shower, you can find what you need at a store near you. The fit of a bra is crucial, so the staff at Bra La Vie! (221 W. Thomas St., Hammond, (985) 662-5065, bralavie.com)
helps women, including brides, find the perfect size. The Hammond boutique carries band sizes from 28 to 44 and cup sizes A to K. The selection is much more extensive than what is available at a chain or a department store, where only the most commonly purchased sizes are sold, says Bra La Vie! Owner Andrea Kopfler. The employees at Bra La Vie! are trained to make sure each customer comes out with the correct fit. There is no industry standard, so it is important to make sure a bra is right for you. “Bras are like jeans,” Kopfler says. “Each brand fits differently. thought was your size, you might not be getting the fit you need.” For brides looking for more than just the perfect bra, Bra La Vie! also offers lingerie, and can play host to a bridal lingerie shower. The bride is invited to come in before the party and find what she likes, and a store staffer will create a rack for her. On the day of the party, guests will know what the bride wants and make sure they have the correct size. Bra La Vie! also carries gifts for bridesmaids and other wedding accessories. The shop also offers intimates in band sizes 34 to 48 and cup sizes C to JJ. “We specialize in the hard-to-find sizes,” says Owner Jaclyn McCabe. To make sure shoppers at The Voluptuous Vixen find the best intimates, McCabe does a bra fitting class for employees once a year, even if they have already been trained. “Eight out of 10 women are not wearing the right size bra,” she says.
“It’s very important to be bra-fitted by an expert.” When you know what size you are, the fun part is deciding on the color. McCabe suggests finding a nude, a black and a nice lacy bra, but also recommends finding bras in fun colors. “Reds and blues and pinks are hot colors in lingerie right now,” McCabe adds. McCabe and her staff at The Voluptuous Vixen pride themselves on having a large selection for women that might think their options are limited. “A lot of my customers can only find bras in nude and black,” McCabe says. “We try to offer some fun colors for them.” A third go-to bra shop for local brides and women is Bra Genie (2881 Highway 190, Mandeville, (985) 951-8638, thebragenie. com). Opened in 2005, Bra Genie offers band sizes 28 to 48 and cup sizes AA to K, so you and your whole bridal party are sure to find your new favorite bra. The location is 3,500 square feet, which allows for a stock of more than 9,000 bras, making the store’s inventory the largest in the South, says Bra Genie

Stop in Bra Genie and you’ll be put with a fitter who can help you find the right size. Even if you buy a sexy bra and thong for the wedding night, shapewear can be your little secret for other wedding festivities. “You might be wearing shapewear underneath the bridal dress, but [the groom] doesn’t need to know this,” Emory says. “Shapewear is going to make photos and walking down the aisle look really smooth and fabulous.” Once you have your everyday bras and great shapewear to last you through pre-wedding events and the big day, it’s time to think about what to wear on your wedding night and honeymoon. Based in the United Kingdom, Woolrich offers a variety of pieces, including negligees, corsets and underwear. “It’s very, very sexy and very feminine,” says Old. New.Blue Owner Janie Glade. Brides are asked to come into Old.New.Blue for a fitting; the lingerie is shipped back in about three weeks.
Another best-selling lingerie line at Old.New. Blue is Flora Nikrooz. The pieces are “very feminine and very girly,” Glade says, and every item is made in the United States. Glade adds that it is important for all brides to think about what they’re going to wear on their wedding night because it is a special moment as husband and wife. “A lot of girls think their husbands won’t like them in beautiful feminine lingerie, but that’s just not the case,” she says. “Your husband gets to see you as his wife for the first time only once, so it needs to be memorable.” Another shop for intimates is Tie the Knot (5101 W. Yes, we plan
wedding showers and engagement parties, anything—whether big or small events. Engagement parties and wedding showers are like mini weddings now. Brides love to incorporate a theme into their events to keep cohesive with their

many important things to consider when planning a wedding—from the selection of the vendors and making sure they are true professionals—to the involvement and importance you place on the people closest to the wedding—family and the bridal party. I know the wedding day is, and should be, a celebration of the bride and groom, but it’s also really important to make sure your guests have a great time, too. A wedding is truly a celebration of a new couple and new group of family and friends. I really believe in making sure that is understood. What advice do you have for a clueless bride? Where’s a good place to start? Talk to your
families—not just the bride’s family but also the groom’s family. Often times the groom’s parents feel left out. I know tradition and culture dictates who pays and who has a say, but asking them to be involved even when all you need is advice and support is important and makes them feel included. If you’re able to set the date then link up the ceremony and reception site, the major work is done. You then focus on hiring capable and professional vendors to do the rest and organize so you don’t have to micromanage them. Focusing on the details that make the night enjoyable is really important. It’s also very important to set a budget and stick to it, so that you are able to make decisions based on what you have budgeted for that vendor. 128 | New Orleans Bride Winter-Spring 2013
How long does it take to plan a wedding? It really depends on
the decisiveness of the bride and her budget, but truly if you are quick to make decisions about what you like and don’t like, you can plan an amazing wedding in three to six months. What are some common dilemmas that occur during wedding planning, and how do you avoid— or remedy—them? Budget:
agreeing and setting a budget. Often times there is a small budget but it hasn’t been defined. It’s best to create one with buckets and allot certain amounts of the budget to certain items based on how important they are to you. For example, most brides put the most money into photos and entertainment as well as food and beverage. Time: you have to learn to manage your time effectively or else you will waste a lot of valuable time on the details too early on in the planning and when it comes time for the wedding, you’re burnt out and out of energy. My advice is to plan all the big stuff first then make time and energy for the details—after all, that’s what people talk about for months afterward. Organization: it’s very important to create a file, share it with your fiancé or family on Dropbox or Google Docs, so that everyone is organized. If you have one invite list instead of 12, you’re less likely to make mistakes. It’s also very important to create a detailed itinerary and schedule of events the few days leading up to the wedding. Not only will this keep your vendors organized and on schedule, but it will ensure that they don’t miss getting footage of a special
occurrence the day of the wedding. It also helps keep the bridal party and families on track when the festivities begin. Of course, budget permitting, it’s also wise to hire day-of coordinators to help smooth out the wrinkles the week leading up to the big day. What is your personal style as a wedding planner? I definitely like elegant and
classy décor and flowers but I pride myself on being someone who can conceptualize the bride and groom’s vision, not necessarily mine. I love to bounce ideas off them to make sure their vision and style is reflected in everything from the invitations to the décor to the cake! I, of course, can come in when needed as a voice of reason or offer different ideas, but I ultimately enjoy trying to make the best of what they budget and vision allows. My fiancé and I have run into a menu problem. He and I, plus a good number of our friends, are vegetarian. We had planned on having an entirely vegetarian menu, but both sets of our parents are insisting that we include at least chicken and, they “hope,” a beef option. Our parents are each paying for half of the wedding. What is the right thing to do?

Regardless of who’s paying, a wedding isn’t the time to push your choices or beliefs. On the other hand, you don’t want to be untrue to your principles, get sick or alienate anyone – these are your friends and family, after all. What you need to look for is a middle ground. Instead of serving tofu or TVP (textured vegetable protein, for those not in the know), why not serve a pasta dish that’s
heavy on the vegetables? You could also consider serving a large selection of fruits, vegetables, cheeses and the like. The key is to stick to food items that everyone can identify. If you’re having a sit-down reception, offering an entrée choice for vegetarians and another for meat (or chicken or fish) is a simple choice that will make everyone happy – and you can tell your friends to push the veggie option.
My fiancé’s parents aren’t contributing anything toward our wedding, but his mother keeps insisting on having a say in every decision we make. Please tell me a nice way of handling this situation before I say something I shouldn’t! Ask for her help in small, very specific ways, such as: finalizing the seating arrangements for her invitees, choosing her outfits for weddingrelated events, helping with the flower girls, designing the groom’s cake, etc. If you head her off at the pass, so to speak, then you can focus her energies on those tasks so that you can deal with the rest of the planning.
If your fiancé’s parents are hosting the rehearsal dinner, try to bring his mom’s inquiries regarding your wedding planning back to what she’s planning – remember, the dinner is their event, and she gets as much control over it as she wants. Ask her about what she’s chosen and why, and make certain to tell her how much it means to you that she’s spending all this time and effort to make that event so special. The most important thing to remember is that your wedding is only one day of your life, but this woman will be your mother-in-law for the rest of your marriage. Be kind, be nice and be very careful what you say about her to anyone – you don’t want to bad-mouth her to your fiancé (she’s his mother); you don’t want to say nasty things about her to your mother (your life will be easier if they don’t hate each other); and you don’t want to complain about her to any of your friends that might get drunk or upset and tell a) your fiancé, b) your mother or c) anyone

else what you thought was a private conversation.
I have created welcome bags for my out-of-town guests. It will be easy to get them to the guests who are staying at the hotels where we booked rooms, but what do I do about the guests who have decided to stay elsewhere? It isn’t necessary for you to run all over town delivering these gifts. When your guests opted out of staying in the hotels in which you have room blocks, they also sacrificed this kind of personal attention. However, if a few of your guests have all chosen to stay at the same place, and you only have to make one additional trip, then by all means include them as well. If you do choose to deliver a goodie bag to each one of your guests regardless of where they will be staying, make it easier on yourself and include only non-perishable items – maps, schedules, activity pages, bottles
of water, etc. Ask the staff at those locations if it would be possible for you to drop off the bags at the check-in desk early (by three or four days). That will allow you to get this task out of the way before the insanity of your wedding week begins.
Who is supposed to give a toast and when? I’ve been to weddings where just the best man and maid of honor speak at the reception and ones where they speak at the rehearsal dinner; I’ve also been to receptions where anyone who wants to make a speech does so, as well as one where just the father of the bride speaks. What’s the traditional answer and has that changed? Traditionally, the first speech given at the reception is by the host – while that’s most often the father of the bride, if you and your fiancé are paying for your own wedding, then this would be your partner and, possibly, you. (The reason that a bride doesn’t tradi-
tionally speak at her wedding reception is because she’s the guest of honor. However, if you’re suddenly overcome with gratitude and feel like it would be rude to not stand up with your new husband and express your joy and thanks, then by all means do so.) The point of this speech is to welcome your guests, acknowledge those who have travelled to be with you, welcome the groom’s family into the bride’s and say a few tender words about the newlyweds. After the host, the next traditional toasts are by the best man and the maid of honor, respectively. Following that, if you have siblings or stepparents who would like to say a few words, this is the time. After that, if the groom would like to speak or if the host would rather wrap things up, that’s the end of the speeches. Some couples like to open up speeches to anyone who would like to say a few words. If you choose to go this route, follow the order above and
open the floor between your siblings/ stepparents and the closing by the host. If you choose to do this, make certain the host, or a person of your choosing, is in control of the microphone to keep speeches flowing and is prepared to take the mike away if a guest seems drunk or begins to tell a story that’s inappropriate. If you’d rather keep the talking at your reception short, then the most necessary toast is the one by the host. If you choose to go down that route, then ask your best man and maid of honor (and whomever else you want to speak or who has offered to do so) to give their speeches at your rehearsal dinner, after the speech made by its host (i.e. typically the groom’s parents). In regards to the timing of the toasts, that all depends on what type of reception and/or rehearsal dinner you’re having. If you’ve decided on a seated dinner, the host should give a very brief toast of welcome as everyone
is seated, followed by the other speeches at the end of the main course; the bride and groom should give their thanks, if they choose, after the cutting of the cake. If you’re having a buffet, the transition between cocktails and dinner is ideal for the host’s opening statements; others should toast after the first dance, while everyone is still paying attention, with the bride and groom’s thanks coming after the cake cutting. If you’re going in a different direction, say a cocktail reception, there are no set rules for when to start your toasts. The best guideline to follow is to ask the host to say a few words of welcome at the beginning, followed by a smattering of other toasts to get the party going. In this case all toasts should be very brief so that your guests don’t get stir crazy waiting. Remember, your wedding day is supposed to be fun, so make the speech plans early. You don’t want to be worrying about the toast itinerary when you’ve got a marriage to celebrate. n

Get your engagement ring insured. Your engagement ring is an important keepsake you never want to be without, but sometimes bad luck happens. Talk to your insurance agent about getting it insured. Make sure you read the whole policy so you understand what is covered and what is not.

Pick your date. The date depends a lot on your wedding location, but decide on a general time of the year, so you know what to tell coordinators when checking on availability. You will also have an answer when someone asks you when you’re getting married.

Seek out inspiration and information. Pinterest is a great website to find inspiration for your wedding, but there are other ways to find ideas to incorporate into your big day. Read a few wedding magazines and talk to friends and relatives for color ideas, dress styles and vendor referrals.

Figure out who is in your wedding party. Your friends will be waiting. Decide how big your wedding party will be and also how many guests you plan to have.
