ome lovebirds opt for simplicity, whereas others adore the concept of more is more. The good news is neither is wrong and it’s entirely up to the couple, their personality, preferences and budget to decide how minimal or maximal they want to go on their Big Day. In this issue, we’re celebrating the less is more approach, but don’t worry, there’s also something for the more lavish among us. Connoisseurs of grandeur proceed directly to page 48 for an absolute feast for the eyes in, “Let Them Eat Cake!” This styled shoot is fit for the former Queen of France herself, Marie Antoinette. It features some of the city’s top wedding pros (listed on the Resources page), set on the breathtaking grounds of Stella Plantation and populated by New Orleans’ “scandalous party queens” the Merry Antoinettes Mardi Gras krewe (Disclosure: I’m a member of the Merrys). This très chic shoot — which we think of as the inspiration for our daily “Let Them Eat Cake” blog come to life — imagines the full wedding day of our bride. Tea in the boudoir, a posh hunting party and champagne le déjeuner are just a few of the activities of our lady’s day, which with its gilded cake and elaborate 18th century gowns will provide inspiration to spare for your wedding. C’est magnifique! The minimalists among us will go ga-ga over our “Easy Does It,” fashion story on page 55, a study in natural, effortless elegance. The vintage-inspired wedding gowns, bridesmaid dresses in pretty pastels and tuxedos and suiting that would give Frank Sinatra a run for his money exude simplicity and grace. For the no-fuss bride whose mantra is “keep it simple,” it’ll be hard to pick just one. When to bring a plus one and dress codes for every type of wedding by Dee Lane

Q: I have a few weddings to attend this summer and am wondering if it’s rude to add “and guest” to my reply card. I’ve always thought that it would be appreciated, but recently I mentioned that I was going to do so to a friend of mine’s maid of honor and she flipped out on me. Am I wrong? If the bride and groom wanted a single friend of theirs to bring a guest, the outer envelope would be addressed to the friend and the inner envelope would read “Miss Smith and Guest.” If your invitation doesn’t have “and Guest” on it, and you aren’t married or living with your romantic partner,

then under no circumstances should you bring someone along with you — or, for that matter, call the bride or groom and ask if you can. Doing either is considered rude and can lead to awkward conversations about the wedding party’s finances. The only caveat to this is if you’ve recently moved in with your romantic partner or became engaged, it’s OK to ask the bride or groom. However, you should explain the situation, and if they say you cannot you shouldn’t argue, threaten to not come (this is the height of rudeness) or make a stink. The short answer here is: Respect the bride and

groom’s decision; wedding planning, especially decisions on the guest list, is very difficult and as a guest your job is to do your very best to lessen that stress.

Q: My husband and I have been invited to a wedding that has several events associated with it, and each one has a different dress code. I know what they mean for me, but what does he wear to each? When is a tie appropriate and when can he wear a shortsleeved shirt? Dress codes can be hard to navigate, but men’s options are actually easier than women’s. Here’s a brief rundown of some of the dress codes you might

come across: White Tie or Ultraformal: Tuxedo or cut-away jacket, white tie, vest, shirt and cummerbund. Women wear long gowns (ankle to floor-length). Black-tie or Formal: Tuxedos. Women wear long dresses, long cocktail or dressy separates. Note: For a more modern look for men, sometimes this can include a black shirt or not wearing a tie with tuxedo for men. Black-tie Optional: Basically, the same as Formal, but men have the option of wearing a dark suit with a tie instead of a tuxedo. Semi-formal: The only dress code that changes depending on time of day. Before 6 p.m. this means a suit for him and an appropriate shorter dress or dressy suit for women. After 6 p.m. calls for a dark suit for him and a cocktail dress for her. Cocktail: Dark suit for him and short, elegant dress for her. When in doubt, either call someone associated with the wedding party and ask, or err on the dressier side. As my grandmother always told me, you’ll never feel embarrassed for looking too good, but the first time you don’t have lipstick on when you go to the grocery you’ll see every crush you’ve ever had. b

he words “bridal lingerie” conjure up images of sensuous silks and pretty lace, but the truth for most brides is: practicality comes first. A bride’s undergarments are her foundation pieces for the dress and have to be as hardworking as the name implies. The undergarments prime or prepare a bride’s silhouette for the dress by eliminating any lines, bulges or bumps. Given that most wedding dresses are made of lightweight charmeuses, silks or chiffons — which will show any imperfection — a bride needs to set about her lingerie shopping armed with an insider’s guide to the best the underwear industry has to offer. Here is ours: 1. As soon as you have chosen your dress take key measurements, how long is the front and the back? How long is the illusion panel? How wide are the straps, where do they sit on your shoulders? Take photos from every angle and head to the lingerie department. 2. Enlist an expert at a store and get measured properly. If you are likely to lose weight bear that in mind but do not buy

anything that is too small or it will create a line or bulge. 3. The safest choice for underwear is a seamless, microfiber thong or boy shorts but if your dress has a wide skirt you have more room for choice. 4. Consider whether you need an underwire bra or not. Some dresses are so structured and fitted that they offer enough support. If not, consider whether you might just need extra padding added to the dress or if you can have your bra tailored to sit inside the dress. 5. Buy the undergarments and take them to your dress fittings. Stand in a well-lit area (natural if possible) and see if you can detect any lines. Match your underwear to your skin tone not your dress, it will create a smoother silhouette. 6. Always make sure you have adhesive tape on hand on the day. Last minute weight loss or perspiration might cause the dress to slip; the tape can afix everything into place and make sure it stays that way. If you are not wearing a bra, do not forget skin-hued pasties. b

Plunging Neckline: Don’t give up the bra. Rather, find a wide-set style with demi cups to boost cleavage. Halter gown: Find a backless and shoulderless bra with a plunging necklace, which still provides good support. Body Enhancing Dress: If your dress highlights your rear invest in “long line” seamless pantyhose with thigh shapers to lift and lengthen. To create an hourglass shape, a go with a bustier with boning. For a slim-line effect, seamless thighlength slips smooth the tummy, rear and thigh. Bonus tip: If you are still dreaming of a pretty two-piece bra and panties set, a sheer camisole or a bra and skirted garter belt with stockings, pack them as part of your trousseau and slip into them when you do not have to wear anything on top.

n the age of the smartphone, working out has gone high-tech. Every minute of exertion and every calorie burned can now be counted. This can make the exercise we do more efficient and our fitness goals more achievable. The current fitness craze is for High Intensity Interval Training or HIIT. A study at the American College of Sports Medicine Annual Meeting showed two weeks of HIIT training improves aerobic capacity as much as six to eight weeks of endurance training. Other research shows

our best hair day ever, that’s what you want your wedding day to be. You want to look back forever and sigh with delight at how gorgeously perfect your ‘do looked all day long. But how do you find the right style with staying power? We recommend considering one of the three most iconic bridal looks: the chignon, waves or braids.

The chignon A chignon is more flexible than you think. After a blow dry, curl with a curling iron into 1-inch or 2-inch curls depending on whether you want a structured or a more relaxed look. For a more Bohemian style, the hair can be grabbed into a low-slung bun at the base of the neck, leaving a lot of natural texture in the look. To increase the sex

appeal, backcomb at the crown and pull into a smooth, higher bun and a clean silhouette. For added sophistication, tease the hair at the crown then create a deep side part and sweep the hair across the cheekbones into a smooth, controlled bun. To soften the look of a structured gown, center part the hair and build height at the top, pull the hair into a side or center messy chignon and tease some layers around the face. For more texture and depth, consider adding highlights to create a pretty, soft glow around the face.

For a strapless dress, let the waves hang down naturally and add a hair slide, brooch, crown or other accessory to dress the hair to match the look and style of the bride. Alternatively, blow out the hair and then only curl random sections in the same way as above, to create a more undone look. For a more classic, structured style, backcomb the top section of the hair and pin the sides up for a half up-do. Highlights or lowlights at the bottom of the hair will add interest to the overall look.

Waves

Braids

Waves spell romance and give a bride a multitude of options. For a soft look, first blow out the hair and take hair at 3-inch sections to curl from the mid-shaft to the bottom with a 1.5-inch iron, twisting away from the face.

Plaits, or braids can create a whole look or be worked in as an element in an overall style. For a plaited bun, use a central part and braid some hair in two sections from either side of the head. Then take smaller pieces

from the bottom layer of the hair and pull all of the hair into an interesting, pretty bun, allowing pieces to fall naturally around the head. Alternatively, create two loose braids on either side of the head and pull them into a loose chignon, embracing any fly-aways in a romantic look. Incorporating some braids into a full on updo creates texture and intrigue; either create a few braids at the front or try a side braid as a “headband.” A low-slung braid is another option. The braid starts at the nape of the neck and is pulled to the side and front. Bangs work well with this side-sweeping style or gentle wisps of hair can be teased out. The beauty of braids is not just how they look when you are wearing them, but the cascading waves they create afterwards for the reception or honeymoon the day after. b

This rules out a buffet style dinner, but the idea of having guests choose their entree on their R.S.V.P. card doesn’t sit right with you. Consider family-style service at your reception instead. Not just for Thanksgiving feasts or bountiful trips to Italy, this type of pass-theplate experience — with larger portions and a variety

of food brought straight to each of your guests’ tables — can benefit your reception experience in more ways than one.

Personal touches You’ve created a visual theme that extends from the first step down the aisle to the getaway car. Familystyle service can help add an element for you to further personalize that theme. Sarah Hall, president of Joel Catering and Special Events,

finds that of the couples who are looking to provide a seated dinner for their guests, about half of them are opting for family-style to set the tone of the event and keep with the spirit of aesthetic individuality. “For clients looking to have a beautiful but not a formal event, family-style offers that balance,” says Hall. “The table presentation really stands out and it can be a little more relaxing than a full formal presenta-

tion. It also works well with long, communal-style tables, which is a design choice popular with many of our brides.” With the attention to detail in themes that is so prevalent in the bridal realm, another benefit of family-style serving is the opportunity to further the personal aesthetic in ways that you can’t with a buffet table and conventional chafing dishes. “We’re always excited

for individuality and using vintage place settings is a wonderful way to achieve that,” says Hall. “It can be a little more work, but it provides a high impact for the photos and really impresses the guests. One option for easier planning and sourcing is to add just one vintage element — like a special water glass or charger plate.”

Managing a budget Depending on the dazzling dress you’ve selected, catering can often be the highest cost of a wedding. If you’re a couple who is budget conscious, familystyle service may be a winning solution. Stacey Messina, co-founder of Messina’s Catering & Events, suggests that larger plated portions brought to each table can reduce your need for a large waitstaff. “(Family style) is definitely more cost effective than a sit down dinner, as less servers are needed,” says Messina. Concurrently, less foot traffic also keeps the pace of the event moving along at a steady pace. “The service is faster than sit-down and definitely less intimidating,” says Messina. “Guests can eat as much or as little as they like — if you don’t care for an item, just pass it along!” Rushing finds the same to be true at Brennan’s. “Serving family style food can reduce costs significantly,” he says. “A much smaller serving team is required overall which can help keep costs down. Also, the guests will most likely consume their food at a faster pace than if the meal

was served plated by course, allowing for a reduced rental time at the venue.”

Communal environment As a bride, you’ve painstakingly planned every detail, including the seating arrangements. You’ve grouped guests at particular tables hoping they’ll hit it off and strike up meaningful conversation. Family-style service is a complement to all of your efforts, creating a relaxed environment from the very beginning. Slade Rushing, executive chef at Brennan’s, says family style service helps encourage a more intimate group experience. “Offering family-style servings often puts guests at ease,” says Rushing. “All at once every table has platters of food to enjoy. There can be an anxious or nervous atmosphere when guests are forced to wait or stand in line for food, he said, but with family style, a new taste experience is just one ‘pass it over’ away.” In a world where technology can take over at every turn, creating a minibonding experience at each table that may help ward off the hard-to-resist call of WiFi. “I have a theory that family style servings are becoming a popular trend because it encourages conversation between guests who might otherwise fall victim to smartphones, Facebook or other distractions at large and significant gatherings, like weddings,” says Rushing. “Familystyle servings encourage guests to engage with each other and truly bond over a shared meal because it feels communal and familial.” b

ou’ve got your somethings old, borrowed and blue. Serve up the “new” at the bar at your reception and impress your libation-loving guests with a few unexpected twists on celebratory sips.

Cubism Getting creative with the ice cubes is a trend that can excite your on-the-rocks guests. Laura Bellucci, lead bartender at SoBou, suggests freezing garnishes within. “Big, hibiscus

tea infused ice cubes are my go-to when I’m trying to make a big impression — they slowly melt to create a color changing punch,” says Bellucci. She also suggests that flower petals and or candy can make a fun visual when suspended in ice. “I think a surprising, personal detail always delights guests. During Mardi Gras, we freeze a King Cake baby in each large cube,” she says. “This would be delightful in a wedding — blue Swedish Fish in the ice for an ocean themed wedding or

A fun choice for a budget-conscious couple is to create a pre-mixed punch. Not only can you incorporate individuality into the serving container choices like large glass canisters or labeled jars, the larger batch can be served easily and can stir the bartender’s creative juices. Abigail Gullo, the head of the bar program at Compère Lapin, is a big fan of this concoction option. “Punches are still classic and easy to serve,” says Gullo who has noticed a trend towards refreshing fruit-forward punches. “Make sure your cocktail is simple and easily batched out for your guests.” Bellucci finds the same to be said of the punch trend at SoBou, which harkens back to the 1600s tradition of the American drinking culture gathering around a punch bowl. “Any budget alcohol can be infused with herbs or fruits or both, and then turned into a very elegant punch for very little money,” she says. “My go-tos for infusions are lavender, mangos, green tea, bergamot, cardamom and hibiscus.”

His and Her Cocktails Creating a signature cocktail to represent the couple is a common trend, but there is a growing interest in selecting individual choices for the bride and groom. Jason Coleman, Brand Ambassador for Sazerac Company, has noticed a trend towards his and her drinks. “I have seen his and her options in more and more weddings,” said Coleman. “I recently got married and had a classic Sazerac cocktail as ‘my’ drink and my wife chose a Sazerac Royale (a Sazerac topped with champagne) as ‘her drink’”.

Take-Aways There is no better addition to your Uber ride home than a little nip for the road. The newly wedded Coleman did just that for his guests, incorporating not only a booze choice that he and his wife agreed upon — bitters — but also adding a customized logo label that they had created for their Save the Dates. “I love the idea of bitters bottles or small 2-ounce glass bottles for a shot or sip of a cocktail,” he says. “Small glass bottles are quite affordable, and while they take some time to label and fill, they are always well received.” b

Aaron Shaffer of Mr. Mudbug and Twelve Seasons Catering finds that a mini version of a classic

Crescent City treat serves as an inspired idea that’s just the right size for the ride home. Case in point, at a recent reception at Benachi House, his team incorporated miniature po-boys for some fun foodie flair. “When the motorcoaches came to pick the guests up, we filled paper bags with hot peewee po-boys in brown pressed paper, added a bag of Zapp’s and a wet nap, then sealed it with a monogrammed sticker stamped with ‘laissez le bon temps rouler’ and put one on every seat of the bus,” says Shaffer. “They were a big hit.” If you want to send your WINTER-SPRING 2017

guests off on a sweet note instead, Shaffer suggests a spin on a NOLA staple. “The callout we see most is for classic mini beignets sitting on top of shot of a cafe au lait,” he says. “When your guests have been drinking all night, they want that little extra shot of coffee and chicory to get back on track.” Stacey Messina of Messina’s Catering & Events finds guests love a sweet tooth moment at the end of the festivities. “I have seen passed, late-night sweets and dessert stations taking the place of a traditional wedding cake,”

said Messina. “Donut trees, macaron trees, and King Cakes are very hot right now.” She suggests that late night food can also add one last personal touch to the night that caters to the couple’s personalities. “Most couples ask for traditional New Orleans late night food — bananas Foster flambé, bread pudding (tons of variations), beignets, pralines, and hand pies — but we like to turn the tables to include a dish from their hometown or even their favorite recipe from Mom,” she says. “Mom usually loves to share!” b

Big Day Benevolence

White Hall Plantation offers southern-style charm with a side of charitable giving By Kelly Massicot

ocated on River Road, minutes away from downtown New Orleans and the Central Business District, sits the charming, 1850s White Hall Plantation. The former sugar plantation is now a part of the Magnolia School, a campus founded in 1935 for those with developmental disabilities. In 2014, the house underwent a major renovation in preparation for hosting weddings, corporate functions and other events. Along with the renovation came the partnership with 12 Seasons Catering and Mr. Mudbugs. The company is responsible for all catering on the

property, which includes the cafeteria for the school. The school receives 100 percent of the rental fee from events held at the plantation. “You’re only limited to your imagination,” says Aaron Shaffer with 12 Seasons Catering, which offers brides and grooms a vast opportunities for their Big Day. The first floor of the plantation home is currently available for use, allowing for 169 guests. The long center hallway creates an open and inviting floor plan, though the space is technically separated into four different rooms. With large, floor-to-ceiling entryways, the flow continues

from room to room. With only a semi-furnished living room area and a few banquet sized tables, the space truly is only limited to your imagination. Furniture can be moved around to different areas and matched with the different antique fixtures throughout the house, making for a distinct experience with each wedding. The rental of the space includes the expansive front lawn and concrete paved area perfect for a dance floor under the stars. The first floor plus outdoor areas can hold a few hundred guests for any event. Shaffer explained that White Hall is really the ideal spot for

a couple on a budget, but still looking to get the complete New Orleans feel. Shaffer says there are plans in the works to continue the renovations to the space in the coming years and potentially open up the second floor of the building. Southern Oaks Plantation Southern Oaks was never a working plantation, however, it definitely has the same grandeur. Southern Oaks has three acres of grounds, an elegant main house with a large front porch, three live oaks, dripping with Spanish moss and plenty of special features. Owner Bobby Asaro makes it his mission to make each wedding stand out as a truly New Orleans experience. Asaro offers home-cooked catering, carriage rides, fireworks shows and even a personal parade, complete with floats. The venue can accommodate up to 400 guests.

The Berry Barn A working produce farm, the Berry Barn on the North Shore offers a provincial backdrop without slipping into kitsch. The barn can accommodate up to 300 people and offers both indoor and outdoor spaces. Inside, the floors and ceilings are hardwood, with both brick and hardwood on the walls. When paired with the custom wagon wheel chandeliers and the fairy lights and draperies flowing from the rafters, the effect is more rustic elegance than down-home country.

Melrose Plantation Melrose does not have any room or hall dedicated to weddings or events, so only book here if you’re looking for an outdoor wedding. That being said, the grounds of this historic home are dripping with antebellum beauty. With 200-year-old oak and magnolia trees lining the seven-acre property and the Big House towering in the background, the effect is striking. Between 200 and 250 people can be accommodated and catering is not provided.

Marché Nestled between the bustling French Market and the quiet Mississippi is Marché. Once a part of the market, it is now a strikingly elegant space for events. Marché is made up of two rooms, the main room and the terrace which is a balcony overlooking the Market, which offers a panoramic view of the river and the streets of the French Quarter. Sit down dinners and reception-style options are available, and the space can fit up to 150 or 250 people.

Louisiana Castle A replica of an English Keep-style castle, the Louisiana Castle offers a different kind of history. The castle, complete with turrets, would fulfill any aspiring Cinderella’s dreams. There’s even a throne room, with thrones for a king and queen as well as a suit of armor. Nottoway Plantation If you’re searching for the biggest, grandest, most extravagant wedding you can imagine, look no further than Nottoway Plantation. Think “Gone With The Wind” on glamour-steroids. The house was built in the 1850s as a sugarcane plantation and is the largest antebellum mansion in the south. Offering an array of lavish accommodations, pampering is no question at Nottoway. Straight Shooters Tips from the pros choosing your photographer

hile it may be hard to imagine now, but someday in the not-so-distant future the fuss and stress involved with planning your Big Day will be over. The food will be gone, the presents unwrapped (and, if necessary, returned), the dress you searched for forever will be carefully packed away, only to be

brought out many years from now for your future daughter, who will take one look at it and announce she’d rather have her own, thank you very much. At the end of the day, apart from the rings you’ll wear, the photos are one of your biggest Big Day takaways. After the venue and jewelry, photography is typically the third-highest-

ticket item on a wedding budget. According to Amy Lombardo, co-owner of Tres Bien Photo and Video, wedding photography in New Orleans typically runs a bit higher than the national average of about $2,500. “I’d say for the middle range, you’re looking at between $2,800 and $3,500,” she says. Given both the expense and the importance of

photography, the obvious question is how do you choose the right photographer? This is where the Internet is such a wonderful thing. Can you imagine all the legwork that used to have to go into such a task? Running around town making appointments with every photographer in the phone book? “I started my search

through Instagram,” says Desiree Watkins, owner of Desiree Watkins Photography. Watkins and her boyfriend, and fellow wedding photographer, Hunter Ryland, recently became engaged, thus finding themselves on the other side of the process for the first time. “One piece of advice I’d give couples is don’t hire someone to do something you don’t see in their portfolio,” Watkins says. “For instance, we’re going to be getting married outside in the morning, so I wasn’t looking for somebody who mostly did church weddings and used a lot of flash.”

What to look for in portfolios “You want to see that a photographer is both well rounded and consistent,” says Ryland. “Of course you’ll see photos they’ve taken in a variety of different locations and scenarios, but there should be this underlying tone —

something that sets them apart. That will help you really get an idea of what you’re going to get.” Lombardo has been working in the business for five years and says 95 percent of the photo and video work Tres Bien does is wedding related. “It’s important when you look at a photographer’s work that first, you see the entire wedding,” says Lombardo. “Don’t just look at a sampling of photos. You want to see how that person tells the whole story of the day. Did they catch unique moments? Did they take a creative view of things? Did they capture real emotion or just posed shots? You also want to ask yourself, ‘Can I see us in these images?’ If you’re laid-back and quirky you don’t want someone to make you look like a supermodel in Vogue.” A New Orleans native, Lombardo says it’s also important to consider the venue. “If you’re having a

wedding at say, Race and Religious, you don’t want to go with someone whose style tends to be super modern,” she says. “The venues here all have their own personalities and that needs to be accounted for.”

Speaking of personalities… Your caterer can be basically a stranger, your florist, someone who is honestly kind of annoying, but your photographer? That’s a different story. “You’re going to be with this person your entire wedding day, so it’s really important that your personalities mesh,” says Lombardo. “The goal is that by the wedding you consider us close friends,” says Ryland. “We make it a point to really get to know each couple, which could mean going out for a cocktail or a coffee first. In order to capture our clients and their relationships it’s important to connect with them. A great way to try someone out is

to use them first for your engagements session.” On the relationship side, it’s also important to talk to any potential photographers about how booked they are and how likely it will be that they will be the one photographing your wedding? Will there be a second shooter accompanying them? Who will be the backup photographer if they can’t make it?

A final consideration Before signing the paperwork, you want to be clear on exactly what you’re getting for your money. When you receive a quote, make sure you know exactly how much time that gives you with the photographer. How much is it if you go over? How many photos does that include? Does that price include post-production work? Touch ups? How long will you have to wait for your photos? Finally, as with any major business transaction, make sure you get a contract that covers all your questions. b

Get into the Groove

Great audio and killer bands are the keys to getting people on the dance floor By Sarah Ravits

ew Orleans weddings set a high standard for festivity and fun. The romantic backdrop of the city is unrivaled and even spending just a few days here can provide enough fond memories to last a lifetime. When guests attend a wedding in the Crescent City, they expect top quality food and

drinks — and they expect to dance. When couples get married here, they expect their nuptials to be the best day and night of their lives together. There are several important elements to consider while planning the occasion, but in a city that’s known for its vibrant music scene, a bride must put extra thought and consider-

ation into the soundtrack for the event, for the ceremony itself, the reception and, in some cases, the post-reception party. In the past several years, couples have been upgrading their audio service to ensure the best sound; there’s been an increased collaboration between DJs and bands, and some couples

even ask their guests to contribute to the evening’s playlist of the evening. Often, to infuse more New Orleans flavor into the celebration, couples hire brass bands to perform during a second-line following the ceremony. Troy Marks, lead singer of No Idea Band says the overall concept of wedding bands has JULIA BAILEY PHOTOGRAPHY

changed dramatically over the years. “The idea of a wedding band used to be old guys who played traditional music,” he says. “If people said that about your band, it was almost like an insult.” Now, though, there’s a sense of pride. “I consider it honorable to be in a band and play at someone’s wedding,” says Marks. “We go out of our way to make it special and cool. It means something to me. There are a lot of bands out there now who know the industry equates to money so they’ll throw things together… Longevity means a lot. Do your research and make sure you’re not hiring someone that’s just there for the money.” Marks group has been performing since the ‘90s. “We have a lot of energy and that’s what really makes our band,“ he says. “[Musicians] approach it as, ‘We’re going to put on a show.” Many couples still opt for their hired wedding musician or band to play a few sentimental tracks and classics, but Dalila Serauntine, lead singer of the Groovy 7, says that cheesiness is definitely out. “The biggest thing I’ve noticed is that brides don’t want to do bridal party dances,” she says. “They come to me and they say, ‘I don’t want anything cheesy. I don’t want line dances. “Brown Eyed Girl” and “Brick House” are out. “ Couples sometimes

come to her with requests by indie musicians, so if asked her group also learns to play new material. Marks and Serauntine both report that couples like to mix it up when it comes to reception music, opting for rock and roll as well as pop music. “We get requests to play ‘Cake By The Ocean’[by DNCE] and the new Justin Timberlake song that’s everywhere,” says Marks, referring to the upbeat “Can’t Stop The Feeling.” Country music has also become increasingly popular, both musicians note. “It’s really been on the rise,” says Serauntine, who adds that it’s perhaps because of the “integrity of the lyrics. Eight out of 10 people want a country song or a classic R&B song or jazz song.” Often brides, whether they are local or planning their destination wedding here, make requests to cover regional favorites, ranging from The Meters’ iconic “Hey Pocky Way” to DJ Jubilee’s bounce hit, “Get It Ready.” Brides and wedding planners should also know that booking the music in advance is of utmost importance. edding planning may be all about “getting there” and throwing one memorable event once you do, but making a stunning exit can be just as important. From traditional modes of transportation, like luxury sedans and limos, to something with a bit of flair, like a trolley, here are a few ideas to make sure you make just as much of a splash saying farewell to your guests as you did saying “I do” to your significant other.

Limousine Easily the most iconic wedding vehicle on the market, a limousine exudes

Getting married in New Orleans means finding ways to add the city’s charm and distinct feel to your special day. One way to put a personal stamp on a New Orleans-style wedding is by hiring a trolley. Similar to a motor coach, trollies accommodate large parties (or small), but it’s their aesthetic that makes them stand out. With plenty of untapped culinary treasures, not to mention those activities you’ve always wanted to try, the Crescent city is the

One tends to get in a rut in their own city — eating in the same restaurants, swilling at the everyday bar, perusing well-known shops. To shake up your staycation, have someone else invent the itinerary. Kelly Troika has your back. She’s founder of Clandestine, a bespoke New Orleans concierge company. Her focus goes beyond goes booze and

10-12 Months To Go __ You’re engaged! Make sure you celebrate with your fiancé, friends and family. __ Nail down the basics. Where are you getting married? Who’s paying for what? What is your budget? How many guests will be there? __ Alert the wedding party. Decide who you want in your wedding party and ask them as soon as you can. __ Pick the date. Check with your family members and wedding party before you make a final decision so there are no huge time conflicts.

__ Find a wedding planner. If you’re planning on using a wedding planner, find one in the early stages. He or she will make all the craziness more manageable. __ Book your ceremony and reception location. Where you get married will affect a lot of your planning decisions, so reserving a place should be at the top of your to-do list. __ Insure your ring. Your engagement ring is special, but it’s also expensive. Make sure you get it insured, just in case. __ Book officiant. Make sure your preferred officiant has your wedding date on the calendar.

__ Write thank you notes for engagement gifts. You will most likely receive a few gifts right after your engagement. Send a thank you note for each gift within three months of receiving it. __ Take engagement photos. Book a session with a professional photographer so you have a few nice photos of you and your fiancé for save-the-dates, newspaper announcements and more. Some photographers will include an engagement shoot with a wedding package. __ Pick your colors. Think about your wedding colors and the overall look of your day. Are you going for a classic look or trendy? Vintage

or glamorous? Your color scheme will guide you through other big decisions, such as the bridesmaid dresses and the groomsmen’s ties.

The typical rule on sending save-the-dates is six months before your wedding, but send them earlier if you’re inviting a lot of out-of-town guests so they can book flights. __ Go dress shopping. You need an appointment at most wedding boutiques, so call a few of your favorite stores to set up a time. __ Register. Register at two or three stores. Choose items at a variety of prices so everyone can find something they can afford. Add more gifts than you think you need so your friends and family have some options. __ Think about the rehearsal dinner. It’s customary that the groom’s parents host the rehearsal dinner. Talk to your future in-laws about possibilities. __ Schedule transportation. Book a limo, trolley or another form of transportation to shuttle your wedding party from the hotel to your ceremony location. Decide whether you need transportation for your guests to get from the reception to the hotel at the end of the reception. __ Plan your honeymoon. If you’re going out of the country for your trip, make sure you and your fiancé have up-to-date passports. __ Figure out your rentals. Rentals depend on the location of your wedding, but if you’re responsible for common rental items such as chairs and plates, make a list of everything you need and where you’re going to find each item. __ Book a block of hotel rooms for out-of-town guests. If you’re not familiar with the hotel, ask a hotel representative to show you a room and don’t forget to inquire about a group rate. __ Order bridesmaid dresses. If your bridesmaids live far away, give them plenty of time to buy their dresses and get them fitted.

4-5 Months To Go __ Buy wedding bands. Shopping for wedding

__ Reserve a wedding night hotel room. Where are you staying for the wedding night? If you’re not leaving for your honeymoon immediately after the reception, decide where you want to stay for the night. __ Get your dress fitted. Your wedding dress is one of the most important dresses you will wear in your life, so it should fit impeccably. Many brides plan up to three fittings. __ Decide on attire for the groom and groomsmen. Talk to your fiancé about what he wants to wear and what will match your overall color scheme. Keep the time of day in mind when researching options. __ Check in with your vendors. Make final decisions with your vendors and update them on new wedding information, such as when they should arrive. __ Order your wedding cake. Taste a few cakes before you decide on your final choice. Talk to your fiancé about a groom’s cake if he wants one.

2-3 Months To Go __ Mail out the invitations. Double check with the post office that you have enough postage. Many wedding invitations require more than one stamp. __ Solidify the catering menu. Whether you’re doing heavy hors d’oeuvres or a sit-down meal, verify the final menu. __ Schedule your hair and makeup team. Find a good hair stylist and makeup artist to help you and your bridesmaids get ready for the day.

One Month Before __ Send your wedding party an itinerary. Make sure your family and friends know where and when to be for the wedding day so everyone shows up at the right place at the right time. __ Enjoy a facial. Everyone reacts differently to facials. If you’re planning on getting one, schedule it a few days before your wedding, or do a trial run months before.

__ Get your marriage license. Head to the Orleans Parish Marriage License Office in Benson Tower (1450 Poydras St., Suite 407) for your marriage certificate. The office is open Monday through Friday from 8:15 a.m. until 3:15 p.m. Visit dhh.louisiana.gov for requirements. __ Set up your second line. If you’re planning to second line at your wedding, you’re going to need a permit. Call the New Orleans Police Department Special Events Section at 658-7100 to schedule everything 15 to 20 days before your wedding day. You can also email questions to specialevents@nola.gov. __ Practice your hair and makeup. It’s best to practice with your hair stylist and makeup artists ahead of time so there are no surprises on the big day. Plan your trial run for a day you want good hair, such as your bridal shower or bachelorette party. __ Finalize the guest list. Send a final headcount to your caterer and any other vendor who needs the number.

One Week Before __ Double check with your vendors. Touch base with everyone one more time to remind them where to go and to answer any last-minute questions they might have. __ Remind friends and family of their responsibilities. Assign duties to your wedding party or other loved ones. Who is the contact for the photographer? Who is making sure all guests get a favor? __ Get a manicure and pedicure. This can be a great bonding experience with your bridesmaids, mom and future mother-in-law. __ Put together a welcome package. If you have a lot of guests traveling for your wedding, ask the hotel if you can put a welcome basket or bag in their hotel room for when they arrive.

The Wedding Day __ Find a way to relax. Whether you go for a run or read a book in the morning, find a way to keep stress to a minimum. __ Make sure you eat something. Brides always say, “I never had time to eat anything!” Give yourself some time during the reception to have a bite. __ Have fun! You’ve made it through all the planning, now it’s time to celebrate.
