PFLAG’s mission to create a better society for LGBTQ+ people

SINCE 1982, PFLAG NEW ORLEANS has promoted the development of a respectful and equitable society for LGBTQ+ citizens and allies through support, advocacy and education.

As one of the city’s longest-standing organizations centered on LGBTQ+ rights, PFLAG has been a steadfast presence in supporting the LGBTQ+ community and their parents, families and friends. Bimonthly meetings enable open dialogue surrounding gender identity, sexual orientation, and other social obstacles that may adversely affect personal and professional development. These meetings also serve as a non-judgemental forum for loved ones to learn about recognizing and combatting discrimination.

PFLAG has provided sensitivity training to local corporations, schools, churches and organizations, including the New Orleans Police Department, and continues to offer training from qualified representatives for any interested organizations. To ensure the advancement and protection of LGBTQ+ rights, PFLAG has testified numerous times before the state legislature and the Orleans Parish School Board. They continue to advocate for the incorporation of transgender rights, a demographic whose respect and dignity are often questioned and overlooked.

In addition to remaining a steadfast source of advocacy and information, PFLAG provides scholarships for both LGBTQ+ students and allies, granting up to $10,000 to eligible students. The Gulf South LGBT Chamber has been proud to support this initiative for the past two years. Applications are accepted between November and February each calendar year.
