2 Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Louisiana 2023 HISPANIC CHAMBER OF COMMERCE OF LOUISIANA

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

Dear Members, Partners and Friends,

At the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Louisiana (HCCL), we are fueled by a passion to enhance our programs, build capacity, seize opportunities, and advocate for the needs of our community. With the Louisiana Hispanic community ranking as the seventh fastest-growing in the nation, we recognize the importance of providing more services and leveraging the focus on diversity, equity and inclusion to uplift our businesses.

The Hispanic community in Louisiana and the nation exemplifies resiliency, entrepreneurial spirit, solidarity and strong work ethic. The work of HCCL is committed to erasing barriers and creating pathways for success with the resources and tools available to all. While the growth in numbers is real, even more important is the economic impact this growing community represents. However, there is still much work to be done in the political and policy arena with representation and letting our voice be heard at the polls. Let’s work together to achieve this goal.

Your chamber has worked diligently over the past year, exceeding goals of attendance, number of events presented and membership. This has earned us recognitions that we value and cherish. I am delighted to share that we recently led a successful international trade mission to Honduras, supported by an amazing delegation. This mission aimed to promote economic growth and strengthen historic ties between Louisiana and Honduras. I am pleased to report that important outcomes were reached in the areas of trade, education and health care, which will provide growth opportunities for Louisiana and Honduras. These efforts directly align with our mission and dedication to the expansion of trade relations between Louisiana and Latin America.

Our mission is to eliminate barriers to growth and create generational wealth. Our dedicated staff continues to work diligently to meet the demands of our small business owners, ensuring they are well-positioned to scale their ventures. Our focus remains on digital and financial literacy, management skills, health care, supplier diversity and procurement, workforce training, and job placement. By providing essential resources, education and tools, we contribute to building a more equitable community.

We extend our deepest gratitude to our generous investors whose commitment and trust enables us to advance our mission. We also thank the HCCL Board of Directors for their unwavering leadership as we expand our presence and strategize for continuous improvement and growth. I am honored and thrilled to serve you, build new partnerships, strengthen relationships and advocate for fair causes. We are here for you and we hope we can count on your continued support. Let’s work together to widen the path of opportunities and leave a powerful legacy. #nuestrofuturo

FROM THE BOARD CHAIR

Dear Members and Community,

We are proud to present the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Louisiana’s Directorio 2023, highlighting our members and sponsors.

Our state is known for its rich cultural heritage and vibrant communities. It is also home to a thriving Hispanic business community. Hispanic entrepreneurs have not only established successful enterprises but have also become integral parts of economic growth and cultural diversity. Their commitment, hard work and entrepreneurial spirit have made a significant impact on our local economy and enriched the fabric of our communities.

Hispanic-owned businesses in Louisiana span across various sectors, including retail, hospitality, construction, professional services and more. These businesses have created employment opportunities for local residents and have also stimulated economic development. From corner stores and family-owned restaurants to innovative startups and established companies, Hispanic entrepreneurs have demonstrated their resilience, adaptability and the ability to seize opportunities.

Our mission at HCCL is to continue to foster this growth by providing resources to business owners and professionals by holding workshops, trainings and networking and procurement opportunities. Join us and take advantage of all we have to offer! In addition to providing resources, we help connect communities. Did you know in 2020 the GDP (gross domestic product) for Latinos in the U.S. was $2.8 trillion? If you want to engage the fastest-growing demographic, join us! We have something for everyone.

In closing, I’d like to encourage each and every one of you to register to vote. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to make a difference and ensure that your voice counts.

PROGRAMMED FOR SUCCESS

For Blue Wave International, a consulting firm that specializes in serving diverse and under-represented suppliers, the goal is grand but the process to achieve it is focused and concentrated: Change the World, One Supplier at a Time.

Co-founded by Alma Del Toro and Eduardo Nunez, a duo with experience working high level positions within the energy sector, Blue Wave developed its own curriculum for its half-yearlong course known as the Blue Wave Supplier Development Program. The program incorporates a variety of disciplines applicable to small businesses, assisting Hispanic-owned entities to land supplier contracts with government agencies and international corporations.

Recently, the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Louisiana (HCCL) played matchmaker and invited three local Hispanic-owned small businesses and HCCL members (Daniel Toro, financial adviser with Edward Jones; JPS Home Builders LLC; and Colmex Construction) to enroll in Blue Wave’s program at no cost.

Within the program, established and neophyte small business owners/operators learn to self-assess their methods and identify and close gaps that could be stunting economic growth and revenue generation. Those enrolled in the program gain tools and training to not only knock on doors they never had access to, but to open those doors, as well.

“What was interesting about the course is that there were participants who all had different businesses, but many of the questions and blind spots and curiosities we had on expanding our reach were largely the same,” Toro said. “Their stories and their struggles – I’ve gone through much of that, as well. Improving our processes. Bettering communication with our team members. The program taught you how to not only grow

10 Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Louisiana 2023 HISPANIC CHAMBER OF COMMERCE OF LOUISIANA
Through its Supplier Development Program, Blue Wave provides local Hispanic-owned companies, including three HCCL members, the guidance to take their business to another level.

and improve, but to become introspective and examine if there’s a better way to do the things we’re already doing.”

“Very simply, your network is your net worth,” Toro continued. “Going through this program not only showed me how to pursue those government and large corporation clients, but I also got to make connections with small-business owners across the United States that were a part of this program, just like I was.”

The Blue Wave program evaluates suppliers’ current capabilities within seven business pillars of expertise: Health, Safety, Security, Environment; Quality; Cyber Security; Corporate Policies; Technical Capabilities; Finance; and Environmental, Social and Governance Framework.

After compiling that complete picture, Blue Wave consultants work with enrollees to author a development plan that will empower their business with the know-how and resources to compete for and land

high-volume and high-value partnerships with Fortune 500 companies and other world-class outfits. While many of the businesses selected to take part in Blue Wave’s program are well-established and have been in operation for a decade or longer, length and proven track record aren’t necessarily requirements for candidacy.

Case in point: JPS Home Builders LLC in Kenner.

Founded by the husband-wife team of Polo and Julissa Olivares shortly after Hurricane Ida in 2021, JPS quickly developed a quality reputation around south Louisiana for their renovation work on storm-damaged properties. In time, those successful jobs resulted in plenty of word-of-mouth referrals to do fencing and roofing, along with full new construction of homes.

Even with that welcomed exponential growth, Julissa and Polo were forced to learn the ins and outs of running a construction business on the fly. Polo had a background and experience in construction from the labor side, while Julissa was a kindergarten teacher for close to a decade.

“We recognized the necessity for the services we could provide right after the hurricane, and the

support we’ve received from the community has helped our progress so much,” Julissa said. “But there are aspects of running a company that go beyond what you actually do for your customers, and those were areas where we welcomed real assistance and guidance wherever we could get it.”

“I have been going to every kind of networking event possible, loving being with the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Louisiana,” Julissa said. “I get so many emails…and sometimes you’re not sure what’s real and what’s not. So when I got the invitation from Blue Wave, honestly, I thought it was too good to be true.”

Sure enough, it was legit. An HCCL board member assured Julissa that the Blue Wave invite wasn’t spam and that JPS was identified as a small, newly formed Hispanic-owned business that could benefit from the Supplier Development Program. After that, she was fully on board and eager to soak up every morsel of information Blue Wave provided.

“I thought it was the best decision,” Julissa said. “Since we started, I’ve had the mindset that I’m going to treat any learning opportunity like gold. Admittedly, I was a little apprehensive and insecure because we are an infant company with only

www.hispanicchamberla.com 11 DIRECTORIO 2023

five employees, but Alma Del Toro broke it down in such a way, held our hand, and let us know we belonged.”

Julissa added that her one-on-one meeting with Del Toro “was an answer to a prayer,” in that she learned the various procedural steps necessary to solicit and land contracts with larger corporations and government agencies – things like creating and presenting documents outlining on-site safety standards and protocols, for instance.

“This was our blueprint to every single document that I knew I needed but didn’t know how to create or make appear professional, and the blueprint for some documents that I had no idea I needed,” Julissa said. “In the day-to-day demands and hecticness of running a small business, there’s not often time to reflect and learn to accomplish the little things – like accessing and creating forms and procedures – that can lead to big opportunities. This program was our chance to work with experts who truly have our best interests in mind and understand the basic steps and requirements to grow a business.”

Conversely, from the large corporation perspective, the Blue Wave Supplier Development Program expands the pool of potential small businesses suited to fulfill various goods and services needed to compete in a global marketplace. As Blue Wave states on its website, access to a larger base of diverse, qualified, innovative and highly motivated suppliers is a benefit to everybody’s bottom line. Business leaders who graduate from the Blue Wave program are given digital badges of merit that can be displayed on their company website and/or social media platforms. The badges contain metadata within them that illustrates the level of performance and achievement within the program of the graduating company.

“Honestly, right after the first class, I knew this was going to be a worthwhile opportunity,” program participant Daniel Toro said. “To be able to combine what’s been instilled in us through teaching and corporate education through Edward Jones, along with what the Blue Wave program brought to the table, just gives you the confidence and self-assuredness to establish and build partnerships with a wide scope of companies that might be in need of your professional expertise.”

HCCL and Blue Wave continue to work together to identify small businesses to position for growth as a result of completing the program. For more information, check out the Blue Wave website at bluewavesdp.com/home .

EXEMPLARY ENTREPRENEURIAL ACHIEVEMENTS

Local business owners Luz Lobos and Oscar Chimal receive Small Business Administration awards.

Louisiana Economic Development and the U.S. Small Business Administration recently recognized business owners and supporters who exemplify Louisiana’s entrepreneurial resilience and diversity at the 2023 Louisiana Small Business Awards ceremony. Two local Hispanic business owners/operators received awards. The Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Louisiana (HCCL) nominated Oscar Chimal, owner and operator of Los Jefes Grill, and Luz Lobos, president and CEO of Synergy Design Group, for an award. Both were honored at a ceremony on May 3 at the Louisiana Capitol Park Museum in Baton Rouge.

The HCCL based its nominations on individuals who have shown determination in business and dedication to the Hispanic community.

“Both of these individuals are shining stars among the city’s Hispanic business owners,” says HCCL President and CEO Mayra Pineda. “We want to support and promote them, as their success will benefit the local business economy as well as the fast-growing Hispanic community in the New Orleans area.”

Entrepreneurial Powerhouse

Synergy’s Luz Lobos received the Women’s Business Champion award. She leads a company that specializes in the design, rental and sales of exhibit displays for museums, retailers, trade shows and other events nationwide. Lobos has built the company by collaborating with clients on branded spaces that give them the confidence to promote their products and gain a return on their investments.

In 2000, when Lobos started Synergy, she received an SBA loan in the amount of $290,000, which has been paid in full. Since 2006, the company has grown from being a regional resource to being a true contender in the national arena. Working with mostly international clients, Synergy Design Group implements exhibit solutions across the U.S. in cities such as Las Vegas, Chicago, Boston, Atlanta, Houston and Miami.

Since its inception, Synergy has grown by leaps and bounds. While the COVID-19 pandemic brought a halt to the trade-show industry in 2020, Synergy Design Group was able to not only survive but thrive. Although

the company’s revenue was cut to around $800,000, that year the company started a division that subcontracts to clients in the Alabama and Florida Gulf Coast. In 2021, Synergy’s revenue was $1.7 million. In 2022, Synergy tripled its square footage in Kenner to accommodate a larger client base and opened a satellite office in Nashville to better serve customers in the area. The company’s revenue that year was nearly $2.8 million.

Under Lobos’ leadership, Synergy Design Group has received several industry recognitions, including Exhibitor Magazine’s Design Award and People’s Choice Award. The company also received the 2018 Hispanic

Chamber of Commerce of Louisiana Excelencia Award for small business.

“We were delighted to nominate Luz for the Women’s Business Champion award,” Pineda says. “She is a very talented and creative professional who has been extremely supportive of our organization in many ways. She has been instrumental in helping us build a brand. She has served as an expert speaker and inspiration on many programs, and she has worked to attract opportunities and help us advance our mission.”

Lobos is a board member of the HCCL, the New Orleans Chamber of Commerce and the New Orleans Multicultural Tourism Network. She also is a member of the New Orleans Chapter of the Women Presidents Organization. Through her board work, Lobos creates business opportunities that might not otherwise be on the table. She also spearheads holiday giving each year through Synergy Design Group by donating to charities such as Angels’ Place. Her team volunteers in mentoring programs, like Son of a Saint and Young Professionals. A role model to many, Lobos participates in speaking opportunities and champions the fight for diversity and inclusion.

Enterprise Expansion

The SBA also recognized local restaurateur Oscar Chimal. He received the SBA’s Entrepreneurial Success award. Chimal, who moved from Mexico to New Orleans at the age of 11, earned experience in the service industry as a busboy in a fine-dining restau -

rant. By the time he reached 23, he was managing some of the busiest restaurants in the city for the Oceana Grill restaurant group. Using money he had saved, Chimal opened Los Jefes Grill in March 2016 to showcase his mother’s recipes.

Serving Greater New Orleans and Jefferson Parish, the authentic Mexican restaurant offers seating for 135 guests both inside and on the covered patio, plus a private party room that seats up to 100 guests, off-site catering and food truck services. The restaurant has become famous for its Taco Tuesday specials. Additionally, Los Jefes Grill hosts a large Cinco de Mayo festival that has grown to more than 3,500 attendees. By November 2016, Chimal acquired a second lease to rent the neighboring 1,200-square-foot office space from The Caluda Law Firm. While he didn’t need the office space, he says the 18 parking spots that came with the property were worth the investment.

While Los Jefes Grill struggled to make a profit from 2016 to 2018, the business continually improved because Chimal reinvested any profits back into the restaurant. Then, in March 2018, Chimal entered a third lease for an empty 5,500-square-foot warehouse space across the street from the restaurant for its 12 additional parking spots.

In 2018, the Jefferson Parish Economic Development Commission issued $50,000 grants to upgrade facades for businesses in the Fat City area. Chimal applied the grant toward a $90,000 patio renovation

that added 32 seats. That year, Chimal also entered a rent-to-own contract for a neighboring property. This strategic move allowed Chimal to merge the two buildings into one large restaurant. The following year, Chimal secured another rent-to-own contract for a parking lot adjacent to Los Jefes Grill, thereby adding 23 more parking spots.

Like most other businesses, Los Jefes Grill was hit hard during the COVID-19 pandemic. By pivoting to offering delivery only and by raising employee wages—plus through the support of long-standing patrons—Los Jefes Grill was able to keep its doors open.

Chimal is heavily involved in the community, too. Los Jefes Grill donates part of the proceeds from its Cinco de Mayo festival to community initiatives. In 2017, Los Jefes bought bikes to donate to the Salvation Army for Christmas. Every year since, Los Jefes Grill has been the main sponsor for a toy drive, dubbed NOLA Families in Need, that collects gifts for kids in December. Chimal also is an owner and member of Yeah You Right Events, a nonprofit organization that produces major food festivals (such as Top Taco, which in 2022 raised and donated $40,000 to the PLEASE Foundation benefiting at-risk students in New Orleans). Moreover, Chimal is on the board for the Jefferson Community Foundation, a philanthropic group dedicated to bettering the quality of life for Metairie residents.

Chimal’s success in a competitive business, commitment to the community and contributions to the local restaurant scene gained the attention of the Hispanic Chamber, leading to their nomination of him for the SBA award.

“HCCL has partnered with Oscar and supported his business over the years,” says HCCL’s Pineda. “He is an active member who has been featured as a speaker and young professional role model. We greatly value his contributions.”

SERVING THE COMMUNITY

Last year, Kenner Mayor Mike Glaser and his administration noted a dramatic increase in the Hispanic population in Jefferson Parish. With slightly more than 64,000 Hispanic residents in the parish, 24 percent identify as Hispanic/Latino in U.S. Census Bureau data.

Noting the growth represented in this data, Glaser and his team identified a need to bridge the gap between local government and the Hispanic community. To aid with this effort, he appointed Valeria Kawas, a Kenner resident who was born and raised in Honduras, as the City of Kenner’s Cultural Coordinator. Kawas previously worked as an anchor/news director for Telemundo 42 in New Orleans for almost a decade.

“The transition from television to local government has been easier than what I thought,” Kawas says. “I really appreciate the fact that Mayor Glaser saw the potential in me. We all share the same vision, which is to serve the community.”

Kawas’ dedicated position as liaison between the mayor’s office and the Hispanic and other under-served communities focuses on expanding community development and increasing engagement. She works with Hispanic organizations to build and maintain rapport, exchange ideas and share resources that are aimed to assist the Hispanic community. She says that the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Louisiana (HCCL) has played a significant role in these efforts.

Kawas says that regular communication with the HCCL has helped the City of Kenner to better engage with its Hispanic population. Partnering with the HCCL on community events such as job fairs and sponsorships, including the city’s inaugural Hispanic Heritage Month Fair and the Chamber’s Excelencia Gala, is a key part of this working relationship. Kawas hopes to continue and build upon this partnership as they support a shared vision of serving the Hispanic population through education and resources.

Her passion for fostering a close relationship between the Hispanic community and local government has helped Kawas serve Kenner residents in her role. Kawas actively promotes Kenner’s Hispanic Resource Center (HRC) on Florida Avenue. The HRC offers or facilitates services, such as education and medical assistance, to Spanishspeaking residents.

“The HRC is very active in the City of Kenner and our residents consider this a safe place,” Kawas says. Other resources provided

by the HRC include job and health fairs, assistance with food stamp applications, ACT prep classes, food and backpack giveaways, as well as a toy giveaway each December. “We try to do different things and expand services to provide necessary resources for the entire community of Kenner, so anyone is welcome,” she says.

Kawas estimates that a minimum of 100 people attend any given activity or event put on by the HRC. For more information on Kenner’s HRC, go to www.kenner.la.us/182/Hispanic-Resource-Center.

The City of Kenner will host its annual Hispanic Heritage Fair in September, and Kawas is excited for the city to celebrate Mexico’s independence for the first time at an event on Sept. 15 at Kenner’s Heritage Park. The event will be held in coordination with the Mexican consulate.

Though many in the Hispanic population do not report to census surveys, Kawas says, “We believe that this is the fastest growing minority in the city.” She says it is gratifying to work with the City of Kenner to meet the needs of that growing population.

JAMBALAYA NEWS

Brenda Murphy’s company has provided Spanish-language news to the community for nearly two decades.

The job of any good journalist is to keep people informed, and that is the service Jambalaya News has provided for the Hispanic community in the New Orleans area since 2004.

Kenner resident Brenda Murphy is the owner and CEO of Jambalaya News. She also fills many roles at the publication, including reporter and photographer. After moving to the U.S. from Honduras in 1996, Murphy noticed the local Spanish-language news coverage was lacking. So, she started Jambalaya News in 2004, originally to cover sports.

After the levee failures following Hurricane Katrina in 2005, local sports were put on hold. Murphy pivoted and Jambalaya News began covering all kinds of news. And so it has continued through the years. A print issue is published on the 18th of every month. Approximately 17,000 copies are distributed to 17 parishes throughout south central Louisiana. There is a website, JambalayaNews.com, and a Facebook page with approximately 77,000 followers. The website includes a link to Jambalaya News’ radio station, with close to 20,000 listeners a month, which can also be listened to on the TuneIn app.

The mission of Jambalaya News is to keep the Hispanic community informed. This has been especially important in recent years as events like hurricanes and the COVID-19 pandemic have plagued the Greater New Orleans Area. An immigrant who can speak enough English to get by in simple daily interactions may not fully understand everything that is being said during a press conference. Providing Spanishlanguage news can literally be a lifesaving resource in an event like a hurricane.

“People see Jambalaya News as a bridge for the (Hispanic) community to connect with our local governments,” Murphy said.

Murphy said she is proud of the fact that Jambalaya News has been the only Spanish-speaking publication present at these news conferences. She pushed local government officials to provide Spanish-language information to their constituents. She noted in recent years that New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell and Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards both started using Spanish-language translators at their press conferences.

Jambalaya News is a partner with the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Louisiana, with an annual collaboration agreement including airtime and print to promote the organization’s activities and events in exchange for branding and other

services. Murphy cited a collaborative back-to-school event and health fair for the Hispanic community as examples.

While Jambalaya News serves the community, Murphy is quick to point out that the community has also returned the favor. When a fire devastated Jambalaya News’ offices in 2019, Murphy feared for the future of the publication, as they did not have insurance. However, the community rallied to support Jambalaya News.

“(There was) not just emotional support, but financial support,” Murphy said. “We lost everything and the community supported us. Thank you, readers. Thank you, listeners. I am so proud to be a part of this community. I love my job.”

A HEALTHY PARTNERSHIP

In his three-plus decades working for Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana (BCBSLA), Anselmo Rodriguez has worn several different hats for the trusted health care insurer. Starting in the company’s I.T. department, transitioning through finance and supply chain management, his role evolved into assignments dealing with community relations. Today, he is the chairman of the Blue Cross Hispanic-American Employee Resource Group, which hosts educational programming and discussions that could benefit a person’s long-term career goals.

No matter the job, no matter the title, Rodriguez’s overarching goal has remained the same – as it has for every employee. “Our mission is to improve the health and life of all Louisianans,” Rodriguez said. “By definition, that includes the Hispanic community in Louisiana.”

To make good on that mission, BCBSLA has worked with various civic entities – like the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Louisiana (HCCL) – to formulate diversity, equity and inclusion programs and initiatives that directly benefit historically marginalized groups of people. That concerted effort began more than a decade

ago, Rodriguez said, when the company turned to the HCCL to assist in identifying Hispanic-owned businesses that could fulfill the demanding supply needs of the health care provider’s massive operation -- thus leveling an economic playing field that had been uneven for generations.

“Since then, the relationship (between Blue Cross and the HCCL) has kept growing and growing as it’s continued to be mutually beneficial to both,” Rodriguez said. “We’ve done a lot of great things, partnering together to address a cross-section of interests.”

Mayra Pineda, president and CEO of The Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Louisiana, says that the organization greatly values its partnership with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana. “Mr. Rodriguez is a valued member of HCCL’s board of directors and is our treasurer,” Pineda says. “His leadership and presence in our programs and events have greatly engaged the Hispanic community and supported the growth and development of various industries. The commitment from Blue Cross is a key factor in the success of HCCL and (its foundation). We truly appreciate their support and collaboration.”

20 Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Louisiana 2023 HISPANIC CHAMBER OF COMMERCE OF LOUISIANA
For years, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana has worked side-by-side with the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Louisiana to form beneficial initiatives in a multitude of social and economic arenas.

In 2020, as the COVID-19 virus severely altered multiple aspects of every Louisiana resident’s way of life, Blue Cross worked with the HCCL to produce vital content (print, video, social media) specifically in Spanish so that all regional Hispanics of every generation could absorb health care information and comprehend the resources available to them. That targeted messaging initiative continued throughout 2021 as Spanish speakers could view, listen and read about vaccine options and accessibility, whether they had reliable access to the Internet or not.

Content included information about no-cost ride services that could transport Hispanic patients to their vaccine appointment, along with answers to FAQs about topics like immigration status, the heightened risk of working in “frontline” jobs, and the overall safety of the vaccine.

“During a situation as serious as the pandemic, information – and clear, reliable information – is key for everybody’s safety and well-being, individually, as a household and as a community,” Rodriguez said. “In our Hispanic community, and specifically our monolingual Spanish-speakers, a lot of information they were receiving was second-hand or misinformed. Mixed messages don’t improve the life of every Louisianan. That’s what motivated this effort to provide health care messaging in the Spanish language.”

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana continues to champion efforts to diversify its supply chain, as the insurer has partnered with regional trade conferences in order to train Hispanic-owned businesses with the tools (procedures, certification needs, other business acumen) needed to engage in contract talks with BCBSLA, or other companies on that same scale.

Beyond nurturing economic development opportunities with Hispanic suppliers, Blue Cross has formulated targeted and specific plans to identify and recruit talented Hispanic employees to work for the insurer. Along those same lines, the company donates funds and resources to several foundations and projects that promote workforce development in under-represented communities.

Once hired, Hispanic workers at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana can partake in its Employee Resource Group seminars on leadership development. This helps forge a path for Blue Cross employees to grow and advance within the company.

“As a company, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana has always strived to meet the demands of the people we serve,” Rodriguez said. “The Hispanic community is an important part of a bigger community that we try and serve, so we want to continue those focused efforts to serve the Hispanic population in health care and economic development. We remain devoted to increasing services and support to better the Hispanic community’s health care outcomes.”

HISPANIC CHAMBER OF COMMERCE OF LOUISIANA FOUNDATION

The Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Louisiana Foundation (HCCLF) plays a pivotal role in empowering Hispanic businesses and fostering economic growth in the state. As a non-profit organization, HCCLF offers a range of valuable resources and programs tailored to meet the unique needs of the Hispanic community. The foundation operates under the auspices of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Louisiana (HCCL) and was created to strengthen the goals of service and resources to the grassroots community through education, workforce training and opportunities, and technical assistance.

The foundation was established in 2010 with the aim of promoting the advancement of Hispanic-owned businesses and entrepreneurs across Louisiana. The foundation and the HCCL collaborate to amplify the voice and influence of the Hispanic community in the state’s business landscape.

“HCCL and HCCLF work hand in hand,” says Mayra Pineda, who serves as president and CEO of both groups. “HCCL, as the umbrella organization, supports and promotes the work of the foundation. This collaboration is a powerful force.”

One of the core offerings of HCCLF is its commitment to entrepreneurial education and support. Through workshops, seminars and mentoring programs, the foundation equips Hispanic business owners and aspiring entrepreneurs with the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed. These programs cover a wide range of topics, including business planning, marketing strategies, financial management and legal considerations. Other services include career counseling, web-based employment training, resume and cover letter assistance, interview preparation and job placement.

“By providing practical guidance and expert advice,” explains Michelle Aguirre, the foundation’s chair, “HCCLF empowers Hispanic entrepreneurs to navigate the complexities of starting and growing a business successfully.”

The support does not end with educational programming. The foundation organizes regular networking events, business mixers and industry-specific forums that facilitate connections among Hispanic entrepreneurs, professionals and potential clients. These events not only offer a platform for businesses to showcase their products and services, but also create opportunities for collaboration and growth.

“The foundation recognizes the importance of networking and fostering strategic partnerships for the growth of Hispanic-owned businesses,” Aguirre says.

In addition to networking opportunities, the HCCLF actively engages in business development initiatives. By advocating for equal opportunities and providing support, HCCLF plays a crucial role in promoting economic inclusion and equity.

Recognizing the importance of education in empowering individuals and communities, the HCCLF offers scholarships and educational grants to deserving Hispanic students. These financial resources help reduce barriers to higher education and professional development, enabling talented individuals to achieve their aspirations. By investing in education, the foundation helps cultivate a skilled and diverse workforce that drives economic growth and innovation.

The foundation’s digital literacy program provides basic computer training. The program comprises nine modules—skills, personal formation, use of technology, financial literacy, job readiness, interview prep and cultural competence—helping participants gain a competitive profile for the job market and/or to be ready for continued education. “We want to help the Hispanic workforce to be better prepared for the job market,” Aguirre says. “Our efforts aim to help build capacity and find jobs and workforce opportunities in the state for the Hispanic community.”

The Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Louisiana Foundation serves as a catalyst for the economic advancement of the Hispanic community in Louisiana. Through its diverse range of programs and resources, the foundation empowers Hispanic entrepreneurs and professionals, equipping them with the knowledge, skills and connections necessary to thrive in the business world. From entrepreneurial education and networking opportunities to scholarships and grants, HCCLF demonstrates its unwavering commitment to fostering economic growth and prosperity within the Hispanic community. By harnessing the power of collaboration and inclusivity, the HCCLF continues to make a significant impact on the Louisiana business landscape and beyond.

“ It has been an absolute honor to be a part of the Hispanic Chamber of Louisiana. The program’s content, guidance and mentorship were truly life-changing, equipping me with the resources and knowledge to collaborate with major corporations.
