LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

Dear Members, Partners, and Community,

The Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Louisiana is celebrating a significant milestone as we reach our 40th Anniversary. This issue of our annual directory is dedicated to sharing our future vision while also honoring the leaders who have brought us to where we are today.

Reflecting on the work of HCCL over the past years, I am extremely proud of our achievements, impact, and growth. These accomplishments not only serve our vibrant Hispanic community but also contribute to the economic development of Louisiana. I am especially grateful for the invaluable partnerships and relationships we have built, which have significantly propelled our mission forward.

The Hispanic community in Louisiana and across the nation exemplifies resilience, entrepreneurial spirit, and an unmatched work ethic. We are committed to continuing to build capacity, remove barriers, and advocate for diversity, equity, and inclusion. Our goal is to uplift Hispanic businesses with unwavering determination.

As our Hispanic community grows locally, regionally, and nationally, so do the challenges we face. There is still much work to be done to ensure strong representation and successful policy outcomes. By working together, we can amplify our voice with elected officials as they consider policy revisions and new regulations, creating a more certain and improved business environment.

Voter participation is critical and the most effective way to make your voice heard on the issues that matter most. Do not let this privilege go to waste; encourage and help educate others about the importance of voting.

Your membership, investment, and association with our thriving organization provide unparalleled opportunities to connect with peers, current and prospective clients, and partners throughout the supply chain, keeping communication lines open. Additionally, our programs and events offer extraordinary opportunities to grow and gain new insights, addressing the ever-changing challenges we all face in business today.

In closing, I am filled with gratitude for our Board of Directors and staff for their tireless work on behalf of HCCL, and for our investors and members for their continued support and generosity, which are crucial to meeting our goals. I am profoundly honored to serve in this role and truly believe that our most powerful resource is unity. I invite you to join us in working together to build a legacy for generations to come.

Yours in service,

HCCL STAFF

FROM THE BOARD CHAIR

Dear Friends and Community Members,

As we celebrate the 40th anniversary of our organization, I’m excited to look back on the incredible journey we’ve had together. In 1984, a group of Hispanic business leaders came together to create what is today the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Louisiana. Although 40 years have passed, our mission remains the same; to provide business resources, foster economic growth and provide business owners and professionals opportunities to connect, share ideas and collaborate. I’m so proud of the work we have done and look forward to another 40 years of growth. This milestone is not just a testament to our collective resilience and dedication but also a celebration of the vibrant Hispanic business community that has been the heart and soul of our mission.

We have experienced remarkable growth and progress this past year. In addition to our great existing programming, we have introduced new initiatives to further support our members and community. We launched Hispanic Biz Force, a program dedicated to elevating small businesses and helping them reach the next level of success. We also participated in several successful trade missions to Honduras, Spain, and Mexico, allowing our members to explore new markets, forge international partnerships, and expand their businesses globally. These missions were invaluable in showcasing  Louisiana businesses on an international stage. We have also dedicated significant efforts to promote voter registration, thorough the “Mi Voto. Nuestro Futuro” initiative. Your voice matters, and by voting, you help shape policies and decisions that impact our businesses and communities. Let’s ensure that our collective voice is heard and that we continue to advocate for a brighter future for all.

As we celebrate these accomplishments, I would like to thank our Board of Directors, Mayra and our Chamber staff for their hard work and dedication. They are the driving force behind our collective success, and I am so grateful. Hispanic businesses are a vital part of our economy, contributing significantly to job creation and community development. As we look to the future, we envision an even stronger and more influential Hispanic business community. By continuing to support each other and working together, we can achieve even greater success and create opportunities for all.

Thank you for your ongoing support and dedication. Here’s to another 40 years of success, growth and unity.

Honoring the Past, Focused on the Future

As

the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Louisiana celebrates its 40th anniversary, leaders from today and yesteryear reflect on the road already traveled and the journey

that lies ahead.

For four decades, the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Louisiana (HCCL) has championed economic growth and opportunity for myriad locally owned businesses – a personally fulfilling but never-ending effort for this vital organization’s membership and leadership. And while HCCL remains steadfast in seeking forward-thinking approaches to serve its community, this year has also afforded a brief respite to pause and reflect on the people who brought this thriving economic advocacy group to this point. To re-enforce its principal commitment to grow, develop, and promote Hispanic-owned businesses and associations across the state, the HCCL

“ Bring your efforts together. Make your community be brilliant like the sunshine. Join the Chamber and become a strong networking group. Achieve your goals.”
– Dr. Vinicio Madrigal, past HCCL chair

chose, “Onward: Driving Hispanic Businesses Forward,” as its 40th anniversary theme.

“It’s been 40 years of hard work by a multitude of people to get this organization where it is today,” says current HCCL President/CEO Mayra Pineda. “During my time in this role, with growth and an expansion of the services we provide the community, we’ve seen many new needs arise, as well. (That is) why “Onward” fits so well as an anniversary theme – because with all the positives that have occurred, there’s still so much more to accomplish with our strategic plans and so many ways to expand services as the business climate keeps evolving.”

Pineda says that leadership has purposely spent time this year digging through HCCL archives so that it can properly honor those who charted the path and paved the way for the Chamber. At a Town Hall event in late Spring 2024, HCCL recognized the contributions of all its past chairs, with several of those leaders honored in-person, including Rufino Saavedra, Vinicio Madrigal, Max Moreno, Manny Blanco, and Martha Castillo.

“The Chamber is alive and growing, and having a good impact in the community,” Moreno says. “We’re trying to form new leaders. We’re trying to promote new businesses. We’re trying to bring tourism and trade to the community and be known. And I think that’s being accomplished.”

In 1984, the “Louisiana Hispanic Chamber of Commerce” was formed by a small collection of Hispanicowned businesses who partnered together to seek avenues to access capital funding and/or investments,

“ I have seen all the different stages that we have gone through. It has been amazing. It has been incredible. It has been a lot of work. I think as a team we have done and accomplished great things.”

Martha Castillo, past HCCL chair

and to share best practices. A handful of years later, a second advocacy group, The Gulf Coast International Chamber of Commerce, was formed with a similar mission. While there was more philosophical and ideological overlap than not between the two advocacy groups, the lack of a singular voice and unified message limited what could ultimately be accomplished collectively.

Noting that, in 1999, the two organizations combined into one and the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Louisiana was born.

The unification allowed for HCCL to continue its micro, face-toface campaigns to assist and shepherd growth amongst Hispanicowned Louisiana businesses, but also afford the chance to tackle macro issues like the expansion of trade relations between the state and Latin America.

“I’m very proud, very thankful and very appreciative of all the work done after I served by those who subsequently followed me,” says Saavedra, who served as the first HCCL president after the two original chambers merged. “Through them, I can

proudly say, the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce is in a great position to continue to advocate and continue progressing.

“The sky is the limit.”

With just 60 members in 1985, the HCCL now serves more than 800 members. Its reach and representation continue to not only grow in the New Orleans metro area but also expand into vital Louisiana markets like Baton Rouge, Lafayette, Lake Charles, and Shreveport. While the overarching goals of the HCCL haven’t shifted much since the 1980s, how they achieve those goals has morphed dramatically. The organization has taken a thorough and strategic approach toward staying on the cutting edge of business shifts and trends, making sure its members stay abreast of those changes.

As part of its 40th anniversary, the HCCL unveiled its new “Biz Force” program – a strategic small business empowerment initiative that outfits operations with the tools and know-how to thrive in a rapidly evolving business climate post-COVID. To maximize the program’s effect,

“ The Chamber is alive and growing,

and

having a good impact in the community. We’re trying to form new leaders. We’re trying to promote new businesses. We’re trying to bring tourism and trade to the community and be known.”
– Max Moreno, past HCCL chair

the HCCL specifically targeted “second stage” Hispanicowned small businesses that have been in operation for at least 12 months and that generate more than $100,000 in annual revenue.

Over the course of eight sessions, Biz Force participants are introduced and become well-versed in technological advancements that can both positively impact their bottom-line and lessen their environmental footprint. Biz Force leaders examine businesses’ e-commerce capabilities and suggest targeted platforms that can expand their reach, increase sales, and increase their customer base beyond the range of typical brick and mortar businesses. Furthermore, Biz Force emphasizes financial acumen, human resources, and the benefits of reinvesting in their existing workforce through continuing education.

An unintentional plus of Biz Force is that participants often foster relationships that lead to the type of longterm connections needed to enhance and expand their existing operations.

“Unfortunately, for many minority businesses, statistics show sustainability is not in their favor,” Pineda says. “So, Biz Force fights against that trend – to educate, to provide for, and to build capacity for Hispanic entrepreneurs who will be the future business leaders and job creators in our community.

“When you think about that, the goal of Biz Force –to foster emerging micro-businesses to grow in scale, which in turn creates generational wealth – is not much different than it would have been 40 years ago. The only thing that has changed are the methods we’re teaching and the tools we’re providing.”

“ I’m very proud … and very appreciative of all the work done after I served by those who

subsequently followed me. Through them, I can proudly say, the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce is in a great position to continue to advocate and continue progressing. The sky is the limit.”

CHARTING THE FUTURE

Plan in Place for New Hispanic Community Assessment Survey

The Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Louisiana (HCCL) has created and is spearheading a coalition of leaders from an array of New Orleans area civic, economic, and cultural organizations that are in the process of formulating and securing funding for a new ‘Community Assessment Survey’ of the state’s growing Hispanic population. HCCL will ultimately be the guardians of the report generated from these efforts.

Once completed, the survey data will provide critical insight for public and private entities on ways they can better serve Louisiana’s Hispanic residents in arenas such as health care, education, employment/workforce concerns, etc.

“Assessing the Hispanic population gives us important insights into our unique needs and experiences,” says HCCL board chair Raiza Pitre. “With this understanding, we can create targeted programs that foster inclusivity, boost community engagement and ensure equal opportunities for everyone. This helps build stronger, more connected communities where we can all thrive.”

“When you look at it from a population perspective, over the last 20 years (the Hispanic) population has grown tremendously here, but many institutions across the region don’t have a comprehensive assessment of the community’s needs,” said Al Galindo of Roux Deaux LLC. “Yes, the census

data provides quantitative information, but it doesn’t provide qualitative information to shape policy and foster continued growth.”

Galindo, who also serves as an HCCL board member, is part of the coalition heading this effort. The original group includes leadership from GNO, Inc. and Telemundo.

This expansive endeavor will be the first of its kind in more than two decades. In 1997, the Survey Research Center at the University of New Orleans published its Hispanic Social Needs Survey – a thorough examination of a group that at the time represented just 2.4 percent of the state’s population. Since then, the number of Louisiana’s total Hispanic residents has tripled, from 107,738 in 2000, to 322,549 in 2020, according to the U.S. Census.

“Not only is that survey the most recent data set, it’s the only data set. So, a project like this is long overdue,” Galindo said. “The influx of workers that came after (Hurricane) Katrina and stayed through the rebuild changed the population of this aera. But until you have firm data on things like home ownership, educational advancement, workforce development, voter participation, and the like, it’s hard to know where to concentrate full-fledged efforts.

“This assessment will provide the information needed to fulfill both short-term and long-term initiatives.”

SPES UNICA AWARD

In April, The Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Louisiana’s (HCCL) President & CEO, Mayra Pineda, received the Spes Unica Award from the University of Holy Cross. It is the university’s most prestigious award.

“This special recognition captures Mayra’s unwavering leadership, selfless service, and countless contributions to our community,” says University of Holy Cross President Stanton McNeely. “(Her) dedication to community service and leadership exemplifies the values we hold dear.”

“I am overwhelmed and deeply humbled to accept this award, which holds great honor and prestige, embodying values that guide my life, such as service, community, and philanthropy.,”

Pineda says. “This honor validates the dedication and passion that have fueled my efforts for years, and reinforces my commitment to striving for excellence in my work in support of my dear Hispanic community. I pledge to continue serving and working to inspire others, opening doors of opportunity.”

In Pineda’s acceptance speech at the April 10th event at the Higgins Hotel, she thanked her family, the HCCL team and its board of directors, and community members for their support.

She issued a message of hope to all who are fighting for their dreams.

“Do not stop. Never give up,” she said. “Let us continue to aim high and work together to lift our communities.”

“MI VOTO. NUESTRO FUTURO”

HCCL Leads Efforts To Increase Hispanic Voter Registration

With the 2024 U.S. presidential election – and several other impactful federal, state, and local races -looming on the horizon in November, the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Louisiana (HCCL) has organized and implemented several initiatives to shepherd citizens through the voter registration process and encourage voter participation.

Partnering with the Jefferson Chamber of Commerce, the HCCL launched in 2023 a widespread multimedia, bilingual, educational Core Voter Engagement Campaign targeted specifically to encourage legal immigrants and their first-generation American children within the parish to register and participate in the election process.

The visuals and messaging of this integrated, cross-platform campaign, which will continue through November 2024, were created by local marketing agency BRAVA – the first and only Hispanic- and female-owned firm in Louisiana.

“I’ve worked with some of the top advertising agencies in the state, and this (voter engagement) plan was probably the fastest campaign I ever had to put together, which I think speaks to the urgency and importance of the issue,” says Carolina Munguia, founder and president of BRAVA. In four weeks, we put together bilingual materials in English, Spanish and ‘Spanglish’ to make sure all of our targets could be reached.

“We’re talking about immigrants who have worked hard to rebuild Louisiana (after Hurricane Katrina), who then started multiple businesses, and stayed to educate their children,”

Munguia continues. “These are people who followed all the rules and did the right things, yet they don’t have the resources – such as assistance in overcoming the language barrier – to exercise their right to vote.”

While Hispanic voter engagement has always been a core pillar of the HCCL’s mission, this specific campaign kicked off roughly a year ago. In September 2023, the HCCL also took part in “Black & Brown Voter Registration Day” – a targeted, collective effort staged in seven cities across Louisiana by the Urban League of Louisiana. Since then, HCCL has continued to spread the message in popular Hispanic community centers, places of worship, and in print, radio, TV, and social media –including a voter registration video produced by HCCL Board of Directors member Jenny Mains of CRC Global Solutions.

“For me, so much of this has been personal,” Mains says. “Voting is a right that so many in our community don’t exercise, don’t know they can exercise, or simply don’t know the procedures required for them to let their voice be heard. The best way to enact positive change is through voting, which is why it’s critical to convey that message to our communities.”

In 2020, Hispanic voters became the second largest voting bloc in a U.S. presidential election for the first time in history. In Louisiana, though, less than 50 percent of Hispanic residents of age are registered to vote, according to the Pew Research Center.

“Your vote is your voice,” Mains says. “The more we vote, the more politicians will cater to the needs and issues of our community.”

CRISTY CALI

Jewelry designer Cristy Cali triumphs as a local entrepreneur.

Opening her first brick-and-mortar jewelry store on Magazine Street in 2019 (shortly before the pandemic), Cristy Cali had to adjust to the shifting business landscape. “We expanded our original distribution office in the spring of 2021, consolidating our operations to create a private showroom,” she says. “This strategic move allowed us to continue focusing on our primary online channel, while still offering personalized in-person visits.” The Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Louisiana (HCCL) nominated Cali to the prestigious Small Business Administration’s Entrepreneurial Success Award, which was presented to her in May 2024, recognizing her entrepreneurial resilience.

Today, Cali says that designing jewelry is about creating pieces that resonate with individuals, allowing them to convey their own messages and stories. “My designs are a harmonious blend of influences, embodying the rich cultural heritage of Guatemala and the vibrant spirit of New Orleans,” she says.

For Cali, being a Hispanic business owner in New Orleans means that she can contribute to the collective Hispanic energy that enriches the city. She cherishes connecting with other Hispanics and exploring the similarities and differences among cultures. “HCCL has been an immense force for connection and growth for me, both personally and professionally,” she says. “The Chamber facilitates networking, professional development and business opportunities that help Hispanic entrepreneurs thrive—and we do it con muchas ganas. Since my involvement with the HCCL, I have been honored with the Young Professional Excelencia Award and asked to participate in several panels and speaking engagements, including NOEW, Fidelity POWER and more.”

Cali also serves as an HCCL board member, which she says carries the privilege and honor of serving both the Hispanic and local communities at a state level, with a national impact. “This role allows me to contribute to the value of events and programming, [thereby elevating] everyone involved,” she says. “Ultimately, being an HCCL board member means having a place to serve my purpose and make a significant, positive impact on my community.

GETTING IT DONE

The Hispanic Chamber and the U.S. Small Business Administration

Registering small businesses for the U.S. Small Business Administration’s (SBA) suite of support programs can be daunting. The Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Louisiana (HCCL) works to facilitate this for its member businesses. Over the past year, the HCCL hosted the Louisiana District of the SBA to conduct workshops in Lafayette and New Orleans to assist eligible small businesses with SBA’s System for Awards Management (SAM) registration and certification processes.

Small Business and SBA awards include:

• 8(a) – Businesses owned and controlled by socially and economically disadvantaged individuals can register for the Business Development Program under Section 8(a) of the Small Business Act.

• Woman-Owned Small Business (WOSB) – The federal government aims to award at least 5% of all federal contracting dollars to women-owned small businesses each year.

• Historically Underutilized Business Zone (HUBZone) – The HUBZone program fuels small business growth in historically underutilized business zones with a goal of awarding at least 3% of federal contract dollars to HUBZone-certified companies each year.

• Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Business and Disadvantaged Business Enterprise – helps veteran-owned small businesses access federal contract awards.

“Our collaboration with the HCCL has assisted the SBA Louisiana District Office in achieving its goal of increasing the federal government’s small business contracting base and the dollars awarded to small businesses in Louisiana. The importance of having an active SAM registration makes the small businesses eligible to participate in the $650 billion federal government marketplace,” says Jo Ann Lawrence, Deputy District Director (Louisiana), U.S. SBA.

More than 300 small businesses have participated so far and have either registered or completed their certification applications. Participants receive training and technical assistance designed to strengthen their ability to compete effectively in the economy and, once certified, become eligible to receive federal contracting preferences, training and technical assistance.

Access to Capital

The SBA Louisiana District Office collaborated with HCCL to conduct the inaugural Access to Capital sessions in Kenner for 50 small business owners. The sessions provided information about applying for the SBA Guaranty Loan Program under section 7(a) of the Small Business Act.

Hispanic Chamber’s Annual Town Hall Roundtable

SBA has been an active participant and panelist of the HCCL’s Annual Town Hall Roundtable and luncheon since its inception nine years ago. “Through this relationship and participation, the SBA has been able to reach and engage with more small businesses to get them active in doing business with the federal government,” says Lawrence.

HCCL congratulates JoAnn Lawrence, Deputy District Director (Louisiana) of the U.S. Small Business Administration on her 50th Anniversary of service with the agency.

ON A MISSION

International trade paves the way for economic growth.

Members of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Louisiana (HCCL) recently traveled to Honduras and Spain to discover avenues for partnership and trade. Mayra Pineda, HCCL president and CEO, says that the trips tied well to the organization’s mission.

“Improving the competitiveness of Hispanic businesses in local, state, and international markets is one of our core tenets,” Pineda says. “These trips helped to fulfill that goal, as we learned from each other and strengthened relationships.”

Here, several members share what they learned—and the practices they are now putting into place.

Honduras

Stanton McNeely, who has served as president at the University of Holy Cross (UHC) since July 2019, joined the international trade mission trip to San Pedro Sula (the business and economic center of Honduras) and Tegucigalpa (the government center and capital of Honduras) in June 2023. The trade mission was coordinated by HCCL and focused on specific areas: health care; banking; logistics; trade; and education. Participants included: Ochsner Health; Gulf Coast Bank; University of Holy Cross; CRC Global Solutions; TeleVizion; and Port of New Orleans.

“We were able to explore opportunities and re-connect with historical ties that have existed between Louisiana and Honduras,” Pineda says.

“There were many engagements with colleges and universities, businesses and economic development organizations, and government officials,” McNeely says. “New Orleans was, in the past, a key destination in the United States for Hondurans looking to pursue college/university education. That has shifted to Houston and Miami. The University of Holy Cross can help with reconnecting Hondurans with college/university education in Louisiana.”

Since the trade mission, UHC has signed an agreement with the University of St. Michael the Archangel in Honduras. “Additional opportunities involve business education, including optimizing online technology for business education in cooperation with Honduran companies for their employees to study business with [UHC],” McNeely says. “Nursing and medical education also has great potential.”

Dr. Ana Hands, vice president of transplant services and international health at Ochsner Health, also joined on the trip

to Honduras. She cites meetings with authorities from Puerto Cortes, and visiting Hospital Maria and Fundacion CRI, as standout moments from the trip. “This was a great opportunity to network and reconnect with business associates and to build new relationships, explore new markets, and increase customer base by gaining insights on local markets and brand visibility,” she says. “There are a lot of opportunities for commercial partnerships as well as academic exchanges.”

Spain

Responding to an official invitation by Association Civil Héroes de Cavite, the HCCL attended the Hispanity – Cartagena 2023 conference in Cartagena, Murcia, Spain last October. Anselmo Rodriguez Manzo, HCCL treasurer and manager of supply chain management at Blue Cross and Blue Shield, was part of the HCCL executive delegation, which also included Raiza Pitre, HCCL chair, and Mayra Pineda, HCCL president and CEO.

During the conference, the HCCL delegation witnessed the execution of a previously negotiated collaboration agreement between the Port of Subic Bay, in the Philippines, and the Port of Cartagena, Spain. According to Rodriguez Manzo, another key moment was when HCCL signed the Hispanic Cooperation Agreement along with the Chamber of Commerce of Cartagena, the American Federation of Philippine Chamber of Commerce, the Philippine Chamber of Commerce of Central Florida and the

Asociación Civil Héroes de Cavite. “This agreement sets the stage for greater cultural integration and future trade missions among the signatories,” he says.

A main takeaway for Rodriguez Manzo was the realization that New Orleans’ geographic location at the mouth of the Mississippi River and the Gulf of Mexico—in combination with the city’s common heritage with Spanish-speaking nations—provides many opportunities for New Orleans and Louisiana. “[We are positioned] to become a world-class gateway and critical link, not only for tourism, but also for technology, industry and commerce, as part of the economic growth triangle constituted by North America, South America and Europe,” he says.

Mexico

Additionally, members of the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (USHCC), including USHCC board member and HCCL board president/CEO Mayra Pineda and other local HCCL board members, recently spearheaded and took part in the U.S. Hispanic Chamber’s inaugural trade mission to Mexico City and Guadalajara, Mexico, thereby enhancing transnational business opportunities for U.S. Hispanics.

Key insights from the mission included the advantages of supply chain diversification and nearshoring in Mexico; the potential in natural resources, sustainability and product availability; a growing workforce in Mexico; and the role of the chambers of commerce in facilitating business expansion for Hispanic entrepreneurs and small businesses from the U.S. into Mexico and Latin America.

“The Hispanic business community is a potent force, contributing $3.2 trillion in GDP to vital industry sectors,” says Ramiro A. Cavazos, president and CEO of the USHCC, who took part in the trip. “Mexico encompasses cultural resonance, product quality, accessibility, a business-friendly environment, and the collaborative spirit of both public and private sectors in fostering international business alliances. By coming together, both sides of the border reap the benefits.”

IN THE SPOTLIGHT

Diversity and economic development are at the forefront of Super Bowl LIX preparations.

In preparation for Super Bowl LIX, to be hosted in New Orleans Feb. 9, 2025, at Caesars Superdome, dozens of government agencies, non-profit organizations and private companies are working together to ensure a successful event.

“The most visible work underway are the road repairs, lighting upgrades and drainage projects being performed by the City of New Orleans, the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development, and the Sewerage and Water Board,” says Michael Hecht, president and CEO of Greater New Orleans, Inc. “Additionally, we’re coordinating a series of murals around the city, created by local artists to showcase the rich culture found in Louisiana.”

GNO, Inc.’s team is coordinating a number of aspects, such as ensuring that infrastructure and beautification projects are delivered on time, assisting with communications efforts to position Louisiana as an attractive place to live and do business, and delivering on economic development initiatives. “We’re also inviting numerous foreign dignitaries to join the festivities, where we can showcase the state’s diverse industries, culture and investment opportunities,” Hecht says. “GNO, Inc., is also partnering with Louisiana Economic Development to develop programming for decision makers within major corporations … [such as] unique VIP experiences and access to our state’s most prestigious leaders.”

The Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Louisiana (HCCL) is a proud member of the Super Bowl Economic Development Committee led by Hecht, and is providing two vital functions for these efforts. “The first is providing extra perspective to the work already underway, whether helping identify critical infrastructure woes or making sure that we’re not neglecting critical details of our region’s economy in our storytelling,” Hecht says. “The second area of involvement is through direct assistance as ambassadors of the region,...ensuring that high-profile visitors are being presented with a true, rich picture of the local economy.”

Through the combined work of GNO, Inc., and HCCL, the two organizations are keeping an open line of communication and ensuring that critical priorities are aligned. “While the work is still in its early stages, this is an unprecedented opportunity to help promote inclusive growth and leverage the economic impact of the Super Bowl [expected to generate roughly $500 million in spending] to benefit a broader spectrum of local businesses,” Hecht says.

HISPANIC CHAMBER OF COMMERCE OF LOUISIANA FOUNDATION

The Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Louisiana Foundation (HCCLF) plays a pivotal role in empowering Hispanic businesses and fostering economic growth in the state. As a non-profit organization, HCCLF offers a range of valuable resources and programs tailored to meet the unique needs of the Hispanic community. The foundation operates under the auspices of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Louisiana (HCCL) and was created to strengthen the goals of service and resources to the grassroots community through education, workforce training and opportunities, and technical assistance.

The foundation was established in 2010 with the aim of promoting the advancement of Hispanic-owned businesses and entrepreneurs across Louisiana. The foundation and the HCCL collaborate to amplify the voice and influence of the Hispanic community in the state’s business landscape.

“HCCL and HCCLF work hand in hand,” says Mayra Pineda, who serves as president and CEO of both groups. “HCCL, as the umbrella organization, supports and promotes the work of the foundation. This collaboration is a powerful force.”

One of the core offerings of HCCLF is its commitment to entrepreneurial education and support. Through workshops, seminars and mentoring programs, the foundation equips Hispanic business owners and aspiring entrepreneurs with the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed. These programs cover a wide range of topics, including business planning, marketing strategies, financial management and legal considerations. Other services include career counseling, web-based employment training, resume and cover letter assistance, interview preparation and job placement.

“By providing practical guidance and expert advice,” explains Michelle Aguirre, the foundation’s chair, “HCCLF empowers Hispanic entrepreneurs to navigate the complexities of starting and growing a business successfully.”

The support does not end with educational programming. The foundation organizes regular networking events, business mixers and industry-specific forums that facilitate connections among Hispanic entrepreneurs, professionals and potential clients. These events not only offer a platform for businesses to showcase their products and services, but also create opportunities for collaboration and growth.

“The foundation recognizes the importance of networking and fostering strategic partnerships for the growth of Hispanic-owned businesses,” Aguirre says.

In addition to networking opportunities, the HCCLF actively engages in business development initiatives. By advocating for equal opportunities and providing support, HCCLF plays a crucial role in promoting economic inclusion and equity.

Recognizing the importance of education in empowering individuals and communities, the HCCLF offers scholarships and educational grants to deserving Hispanic students. These financial resources help reduce barriers to higher education and professional development, enabling talented individuals to achieve their aspirations. By investing in education, the foundation helps cultivate a skilled and diverse workforce that drives economic growth and innovation.

The foundation’s digital literacy program provides basic computer training. The program comprises nine modules—skills, personal formation, use of technology, financial literacy, job readiness, interview prep and cultural competence—helping participants gain a competitive profile for the job market and/or to be ready for continued education. “We want to help the Hispanic workforce to be better prepared for the job market,” Aguirre says. “Our efforts aim to help build capacity and find jobs and workforce opportunities in the state for the Hispanic community.”

The Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Louisiana Foundation serves as a catalyst for the economic advancement of the Hispanic community in Louisiana. Through its diverse range of programs and resources, the foundation empowers Hispanic entrepreneurs and professionals, equipping them with the knowledge, skills and connections necessary to thrive in the business world. From entrepreneurial education and networking opportunities to scholarships and grants, HCCLF demonstrates its unwavering commitment to fostering economic growth and prosperity within the Hispanic community. By harnessing the power of collaboration and inclusivity, the HCCLF continues to make a significant impact on the Louisiana business landscape and beyond.

Anyone wishing to benefit from HCCLF’s services, including digital literacy and workforce training, is encouraged to reach out to the Foundation. Additionally, business owners interested in hiring HCCLF’s program participants are encouraged to make contact.

HCCL FOUNDATION TESTIMONIOS

Gracias muchas gracias.” Anuar Manun

“Our company A1 Nola Notary has grown since opening our doors in September 2022. The Hispanic Chamber of Commerce has been a great resource and help in building new connections with individuals and other businesses. Some of the resources that the chamber referred us to includes LED certification and business mentorship through the LSBDC. As members of the chamber, we have participated in many community events such as local networking events, trade shows, and many educational programs provided. The Hispanic Chamber named A1 Nola Notary member of the month in December 2023. We also have had the opportunity to provide free notarial services to the public at local job fairs. Last year, the chamber invited us to apply for an accelerated business program with Shell LiveWIRE, and we were chosen as 1 out of 25 businesses in 13 different parishes to complete the program. The program consisted of an 8-week session of business education that included marketing, business planning, financial planning, and much more. Throughout the course of the program, our company went through a rigorous application process with the Office of Motor Vehicles and Department of Public Safety and Corrections to be an authorized public tag agency and auto title company. We can now say that we are 1 out of 8 authorized public tag agencies in the city of Kenner that offers vehicle registration, title applications and transfers, instant license plates, and many other related services. We look forward to expanding our company with aid from the resources provided by the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and other Louisiana business resource programs.”

Quiero compartirles mi gran historia con el Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Louisiana (HCCL).

LOUISIANA’S HISPANIC COMMUNITY -FACTS AND STATISTICS-

In 2023, HCCL led one of the first trade missions coordinated by a chamber of commerce to Central America, promoting Hispanic business across Louisiana and Honduras, and connecting them with corporations from both countries.

We held our first event in the Shreveport area and connected with the Hispanic community there.

The HCCL served 2,767 individuals between 2023 and 2024.

The Hispanic Chamber has over 847 members

Latino-owned businesses receive less than 2% of the available Venture Capital funding in the U.S.

In 2023, the HCCL provided the local community with over 157 workshops, seminars & networking opportunities. Latinas own 104,000 employer businesses, making up 27% of all Latino/a-owned employer firms, compared to 21% for White women.

Since January 2023, the HCCL has hosted 14 signature events, with a total of 7,235 attendees

Latino/a immigrants own 52% of Latino/a employer firms, compared to 7% for Whites. They face steeper barriers but show strong generational growth and sector diversification.

Latino/a immigrants make up 32% of the nearly 64 million Latinos/as in the U.S., with immigrants comprising 14% of the total U.S. population

The Hispanic Chamber of Commerce has strengthened ties with Spain, Honduras, Mexico, Chile and Colombia

In partnership with Asociación Cultural Héroes de Cavite, we launched the “Las Raíces Hispanas de los Estados Unidos” magazine to promote Hispanic heritage and contributions.

In January 2024, we launched our first secondstage business program, the Hispanic BIZ Force Program, with 52 business owners subscribed.

Latino/a-owned tech businesses outperform White-owned ones in revenue growth and AI adoption but face liquidity and financing challenges. Their resilience promises a bright future.

HCCL TESTIMONIALS

“ Being a part of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Louisiana for the past three years has been an incredibly enriching and transformative experience. The networking events have connected me with outstanding leaders from around our city, allowing me to forge meaningful friendships and cultivate groundbreaking ideas. This year, I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to work with CRC Global Solutions, a leading company in our city, which has honored JPS Home Builders by showcasing our exceptional craftsmanship in their own home. As a proud and dedicated member of the Young Professionals, we have not only worked together but also gained new business opportunities as we unite to serve our vibrant Hispanic community. The Chamber has been a true catalyst for both personal and professional growth, and I am profoundly proud to be a member.

“ My name is Tracy Kelly and I am the Regional Director of Secure Trade. As a Hispanic-owned business, we are very familiar with the hard-working, family-oriented nature of the Hispanic business community, and have sought to instill these qualities into our business culture, as well as seeking these characteristics in our associations. Sponsoring the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Louisiana has been one of the best strategic business decisions that we have made. HCCL is a powerful ally, and they have supported us every step of the way. Their networking events are extremely impactful, and keep us informed of the latest business trends and technology, as well as upcoming opportunities and innovations. Connections and resources are seamlessly shared, as their expert staff works tirelessly to foster business growth, knowledge, and acumen. HCCL has also helped us to substantially improve our business processes and operational communications. HCCL membership qualified us to be referred to the Blue Wave Program, which we graduated from at Nicholls State University earlier this year. This program prepares small minority and disadvantaged business enterprises to be compliant with Fortune 500 business procurement policies. I could go on and on about our double-, and triple-digit growth percentage since joining HCCL, but I will seek to suffice by saying, HCCL sponsorship is one of the highest earning business investments that we have made. It is a true partnership in scaling and branding your business, and has proven to be a trusted and valued advocacy not just for us, but everyone that I have seen regularly involved in the group. In my opinion, joining and engaging with HCCL should be tops on any entrepreneur’s list, who is involved in business within the State of Louisiana.”

“ The leadership of the Historic New Orleans Collection greatly values the benefits that come from being a champion of the work of Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (of Louisiana). We have been proud to support the work of HCCL through our participation in the Women’s Business Symposium, the Town Hall Roundtable and the Excelencia Gala. In return, the HCCL has helped us forge meaningful, new connections in the Hispanic business community and to raise awareness of our institution with new audiences across the region. ”

“ I’m Yunelly Frias, owner of Yunelly Giftshop (minority woman-owned enterprise). We offer a wide range of services including catering, corporate event organization, weddings, birthday festivities, and baby showers. We are glad to be part of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce in Louisiana, over the years participating in different programs that have been helping to develop the necessary skills to grow our business like: Excel classes, QuickBooks, Woman Symposium, Biz Force, Networking meetings, AI for Business. Being able to participate in the chamber as a member as well as a sponsor has brought exposure with other businesses that have become an ally to improve our market resources.”

“ Our partnership with the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Louisiana has enabled JPMorgan Chase to forge strong connections within the Hispanic community and effect meaningful change. As a former Board Member and founder of the HCCL Young Professionals, my mission has been to unite, inspire, and empower the next wave of Hispanic leaders in our region. This mission continues to drive and fuel my purpose. Recognizing that Hispanics are the fastest-growing demographic in Louisiana, our firm is dedicated to enhancing access to capital, resources and opportunities for Hispanic- and Latino-owned businesses. Additionally, we are committed to promoting affordable and sustainable homeownership. Our ongoing partnership with HCCL will allow us to continue engaging with the community, breaking down barriers and promoting inclusive economic growth.”

“ The University of Holy Cross (UHC) is a proud partner with the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Louisiana (HCCL). Our partnership has resulted in increased engagement and business relationships with the members of HCCL and the broader Hispanic community. UHC participated in the HCCL trade mission to Honduras in June 2023, resulting in many educational and business opportunities. We honored HCCL CEO Mayra Pineda with the highest award of the University of Holy Cross, the Spes Unica Award, in April 2024, highlighting the strengthening partnership between HCCL and UHC. On Oct. 12, 2024, the University of Holy Cross campus will host the inaugural Westbank Hispanic Heritage Festival co-sponsored by HCCL. This event will be open to the public and will highlight Hispanic-owned businesses, vendors, entertainers, etc. As president of the University of Holy Cross, I am glad that we are growing our partnership with the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Louisiana and am excited about the future ahead together! ”
