Last Days Of Passenger Trains Rambling Through The State

W

hen I was a kid my dad once took me by passenger train to visit relatives near Marksville. The train, called the Southern Belle, was operated by Kansas City Southern railroad. I have three main memories from the experience. One is that it was unusual for a dad to take a mere kid to something as swanky as a dining car where the walls had decorations, the waiters wore service jackets and the menu offerings were advanced beyond hot dogs. My dad probably thought I would always remember the experience, and, as I sit at the keyboard today, boy was he right. Experience two was that somehow, I was convinced to order Redfish Couvillion. I had never heard of that word “Couvillion” (pronounced roughly coo— vee—on) and I probably never heard of redfish which I would come to realize was several steps above canned tuna or fish sticks. But it was the third memory that would linger the most. As we waited to be served fellow diners began pointing to an automobile that was on the highway near Morgana paralleling the train track. The driver was keeping up with the train’s speed while incessantly blinking his lights. “Who is that guy?” fellow travelers wondered. “He must be crazy!” Not even the Couvillion could compete with this spectacle. None of us realized that a greater spectacle was the Southern Belle itself. These were the last days of commercial passenger service. Kansas City Southern was, and still is, very important to Louisiana commerce as a freight hauler. The Missouri-bound passenger train connected New Orleans and Shreveport. In better days there were other passenger lines slicing through the state and terminating in New Orleans. The most famous ones were

Illinois Central’s Chicago-bound City of New Orleans and its Panama Limited; Southern Railway’s Crescent rambled through D.C. on the way to New York; There were also Southern Pacific’s Sunset Limited and Louisville and Nashville’s (L & N’s) Hummingbird. Interstates, trucking and air service would contribute to the demise of commercial passenger service. Where passenger trains survive now, they have been taken over by Amtrak since 1971. Of those that touch Louisiana only the City of New Orleans, the Crescent and the Sunset Limited still exist. Today, there is no passenger rail service through the center of the state. New Orleans to Shreveport? Fill your gas tank and take either Louisiana Highway One or I-10 to 1-49. Along the way you will see the routes where the Southern Belle once rumbled. If your route takes you through Morgana you would be taking the path where the driver was blinking his lights at the train. The next day after our arrival my father was taking to one of his brothers, Henry, who asked if we noticed him blinking his lights. It was no crazy guy after all, it was my uncle. Couvillion was a method of preparing fish as a stew. Redfish provided a popular way to serve the dish until a few years later when Cajun Chef Paul Prudhomme (who was from Opelousas not far from the Southern Belle’s route) created a charred spicy preparation known as Blackened Redfish. The fish would seldom be experienced stewed again. I guess we should have known from my uncle’s automobile lights keeping pace with the train, the future was approaching fast.

On its fourth dance floor, Randol’s was famous for hosting Crowbar Parties to replace each wornout floor. Dancers used crowbars to remove the planks over three nights while they kept waltzing to Cajun bands. In the 1980s, Randol introduced Cajun food and culture to major U.S. markets.

lans are underway to celebrate the life of the late Gothic novelist and New Orleans native, Anne Rice, who died after complications from a stroke in December at age 80. The event “will be open to the public and will invite the participation of her friends, readers and fans,” according to her son, Christopher Rice. Although Rice published more than 40 books that sold 100 million copies, she is best known for her 1976 debut novel, “Interview with the Vampire,” which is making a comeback as an AMC series being filmed in New Orleans (adapted from the original 1994 film starring Brad Pitt as “Louis” and Tom Cruise as “Lestat”). Cathartically written during a time of grief, it was published 4 years after Rice’s 5-year-old daughter Michele’s death. “Lestat was Stan (her late husband) and I was Louis and Claudia was Michele,” Rice told Event magazine. In the TV adaptation, actor Jacob Anderson, who many know from “Game of Thrones,” is in the lead role as “Louis,” a young man seduced into the world of the undead by amoral “Lestat.”

Paper Trail Ruston bookmaker Frank Hamrick pumps up the volumes BY JEFFREY ROEDEL PHOTOS BY ROMERO & ROMERO

H

e’s no fortune teller. He makes paper. That’s how Frank Hamrick knows the exact future of the T-shirt he’s wearing, and it’s not the bottom of a drawer or on the racks of a nearby Ruston thrift shop. He’ll boil the cotton garment, beat the slurry to a pulp, then dry and press it as pages to use in a brand-new book. “It’s getting a little worn, so I’ll turn this shirt into sheets of paper,” he says in a grainy Georgia drawl. “If you ever hear ‘that guy got beaten to a pulp,’ well that phrase relates back to making paper.” Though he creates vivid letterpress greeting cards and a recent project saw him collaborating with roots music icons Gillian Welch and David Rawlings on a book about their archival recordings, Hamrick’s work most often tailgates his own visual fantasia, a blend of rough-hewn paper-making and book-binding, film and tintype photography and the surprises of curating a litany of curiosities. With work housed in permanent collections in New York City, London and across the South — iconic photographer Sally Mann is a fan — Hamrick serves as an associate professor in the School of Design at Louisiana Tech University. In his spare time, AT A GL ANCE he conducts workshops like the ones he held last summer at the prestigious NAME Frank Hamrick Penland School of Crafts in Asheville, and creates his LOCATION own commecial and fine art Ruston books, not all of them borne BUSINESS out of old T-shirts. Hamrick was gifted his first camera at age 10, and quickly found a niche taking photos of his friends and fellow skateboarders. “Finding your place and your individuality to create something that’s rewarding for you personally is so important, and that’s what I tell my students,” Hamrick says. “I wasn’t going to play ball or even pursue skateboarding professionally, so photography set me on my path.” Hamrick grew up in Macon, Georgia, a quiet town in sheep’s clothing, so to speak. Beneath a Southern Living surface lies a haven of hawkish creative history, from the Southern sprawl of The Allman Brothers Band who invented jazz and blues-infused jam rock there in the early ‘70s, to the birthplace of the blaring boogie of Little Richard, a black and gay gospel singer who lit a match on rock’n’roll with “Tutti Frutti.” As a teen, Hamrick interned at Capricorn Sound Studios where the Allmans cut “Midnight Rider,” and today his work reflects that same mystery of Macon’s duality with river-deep measures of poetry and a wink of modern mythmaking. “I am drawn to words and images that suggest something beyond what they simply state and show,” Hamrick says. “When making a piece of work, I don’t

want to just throw a rock in the river. I want that stone to skip as many times as possible and ripple the water with every bounce.” With titles like “I Found It When I Stopped Looking,” “A Rabbit Runs in a Circle” and “It Was There All Along,” Hamrick’s books are found-art journals of a Deep South that still exists if one only stays for one more song, or keeps walking even though it’s getting late, or turns first to the note-splattered, dog-eared chapter, or rolls down the right dusty road. “Books are intersections of many things,” he says. “It’s a time-based media. You have to spend time with it, like a movie or a play or an album of music. With my books, I want it to feel like you went for a drive through this other world.” For Hamrick, holding a book in his hands makes experiencing art truly tactile, and it creates content that is more engaging than something shining on a device, because it fires up feelings and imagination equally. “The more senses you can a c t i v a t e , t h e more memorable it is,” Hamrick says. “What do you get with a book instead of reading or looking at art on a device? You get something that expresses permanence. But at the same time, books can be damaged or lost, so you get something precious.” n

Between Georgia, New Mexico and Louisiana, you’ve experienced the land and cultures of three very different areas in the Southern U.S. How has living in Louisiana made a mark on your work? Living in those states, as well as Maine and Italy, revealed what is consistent from one place to the next and what is unique. Louisiana has made me understand cause and effect on a deeper level, studying history to see how actions from the past led to the way things are today. But also, being in a small college town has helped me realize the impact a single person can have. What is one theme or subject for a book you have not explored yet but want to tackle? I regularly visited the Rio Grande while attending graduate school at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces. People often hear about the river in the context of national border issues. But I would like to travel the Rio Grande to make a photography book approaching the river from a personal, ecological perspective. Perhaps not even telling viewers what they were seeing, then reveal the river’s name at the end so people could really reconsider that part of the world. When not creating or teaching, what do you do for fun in the Ruston area? Do you travel much these days? I love catching live music here in Ruston where I have the chance to interact with musicians like songwriter Kevin Gordon and bluesman Robert Finley. I am also working with other artists in town on a longterm project to convert the former city pool into Ruston Skatepark.

Art for the People Creating floats for Mardi Gras gives New Orleans artist Caroline Thomas a sense of purpose BY JOHN R. KEMP PHOTOS BY RYAN HODGESON-RIGSBEE

T

he Rex Organization’s motto, “Pro Bono Publico,” has special meaning to New Orleans Mardi Gras float designer and painter Caroline Thomas. “For the Public Good” gives purpose to her art. Seeing Thomas and other members of the Royal Artists crew at work preparing floats for the 2022 carnival season calls to mind what novelist Pat Conroy once wrote about another place and another time — “It’s where angels and butterflies are born.” Thomas and her team work year round, creating papier-mâché fantasies of the sublime and grotesque, monarchs and knaves, dragons and trolls, “angels and butterflies” for Carnival floats destined to thrill frantic arm-waving parade-goers. Thomas and her employer Royal Artists Inc. are doing well in the carnival fantasy business. Founded by Herbert Jahncke and now owned by Richard Valadie, Royal Artists has contracts with Rex, Proteus, Babylon, the Krewe d’Etat and the Knights of Chaos as well as carnival organizations in Mobile, Alabama. Of the local krewes, Thomas designs floats for Rex and Proteus. She does them the original way, not on computers. With a loving sense of tradition, she begins with a concept and then draws thumbnail

sketches followed by full pencil drawings, and finally, watercolor paintings for each float. The floats and their decorative figures are built up layers of plywood, painted cardboard and papier-mâché on canvas over wire and wooden frames. For Proteus, she submits design ideas to the organization for consideration. Rex, however, has a committee, headed by Rex Artistic Director Henri Schindler, which determines the theme that is passed on to Thomas and Valadie. “Caroline is a wonderful artist and a worthy successor to a number of superb women who designed Rex parades for decades,” says Stephen Hales, Rex historian, archivist and author of two books on the history of the Rex

show. There’s so much tradition in it. People and their families have been meeting in the same spot for generations to watch parades. You feel like you are a culture bearer. And it’s fun to see people’s reactions.” Thomas loves the artistic freedom Rex and Proteus give her. Like the time she chose Richard Wagner’s operas “The Ring Cycle” as Proteus’s theme for that year’s parade. She wasn’t sure people understood the operas, but they enjoyed the dragons and trolls. “For Proteus, I’m always thinking about ideas,” she says. “One of the things I love about my job is I get to read mythology, history and literature. I’m always on the hunt for some interesting piece of mythology. And what I do appreciate with Proteus and with Rex is that they really don’t mind if we go a little obscure with the theme. I never want to be a gatekeeper for Mardi Gras, but it’s better than some pop culture theme.” To Thomas, Carnival in New Orleans is an inseparable combination of European, African-American, Creole and Afro-Caribbean elements unlike carnival anywhere else. That makes the field rich for a float designer. Last year when COVID-19 forced the city to cancel Mardi Gras, Thomas worked with the Krewe of Red Beans to raise money for unemployed artists, older musicians and others in the city’s cultural community. Responding to an online story that encouraged people to decorate their houses for Mardi Gras, Thomas formed Hire a Mardi Gras Artist to design and construct “house floats” for people in Orleans Parish. our years ago, having raised their three daughters (the youngest, was still a high school senior at home), Diana and Jay Cole decided to downsize to a smaller, newly built house in Covington’s Terra Bella development. The new address would be more than just a move; with the help of New Orleans- and Atlanta-based interior designer Susan Currie, it would be a fresh start for the next chapter of their lives.

18 LOUISIANA LIFE JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2022

“Our vision was to have someone come in and do a nice design, but also give it our personalities as well,” says Diana. “They spend a lot of time at home,” says Currie. “It was an opportunity to take a home built by a builder and add features that made it personal.” When the Coles hired Currie, they had already gotten rid of most of their furnishings from their previous house. Currie had the luxury of starting from scratch, and because she anchors most of her interiors with timeless pieces, she was well-suited to working with a blank slate. Decorated in two years, the house reads as if it’s been collected over a longer time. Vintage and reproduction pieces with period details provide polished elegance; distressed finishes and rustic woods impart warmth; contemporary designs such as minimal, sculptural lamps modernize the classic traditionalism. “She’s great about layering,” says Diana. “It doesn’t look like we bought everything new.”

High ceilings, pilasters in the piano room and living area, abundant natural light, throughout the home, use of art to add color to the neutral walls.

A few changes and upgrades were made to the house. Currie designed a drop-down counter crafted for one end of the kitchen island, replaced the existing hodgepodge of lighting fixtures with a curated selection of chandeliers and brought a single flourish of pattern to the white wall of the interior with a subtle floral paper in the powder room. Because the Coles’ youngest daughter is a singer and songwriter, the designer turned the formal dining room into a music room with the family’s baby grand piano. For the couple, she created a multi-use room that

accommodates guests with a sleeper sofa, serves as a home office for Diana and includes an antique map of Louisiana, which speaks to Jay’s love of maps. She also personalized the décor by repurposing furnishings where necessary and including custom detailing. Modifications were made to the vintage end tables purchased for the Coles’ daughter’s room so that they work as a pair, for example, while tufted backs and nail head trim elevate the arrangement of seating in the living room.

Color, one of Currie’s trademarks, enlivens the white envelope of the interior. Upholstery, pillows, rugs, custom shades and draperies, bedding and art were chosen in a calming palette ranging from dusty pastels to vibrant beachy hues. The art, found almost entirely through Cole Pratt Gallery in New Orleans, includes several abstract paintings the color of Florida’s clear blue skies and water. “We had to pull three people’s visions together,” says Diana. “Susan was able to do that and make it into a home that we all love.” ■

arrots, parsnips, turnips and winter squash really come into their own this time of year. They show up in everything from appetizers to sweets. Each one is delicious on its own and all of them combined do wonders for a winter vegetable soup. Carrots are one of the workhorses of the kitchen, essential for making stocks and soups, superb when stewed with beef, delicious as a puree, soup or salad, treasured as a vegetable and outrageously popular when transformed into a cake. The earliest carrots are thought to have been purple, yellow and red, while the familiar orange carrot was probably developed by the Dutch in

the 17th century. Today, multicolored carrots are again making a comeback. Parsnips, which belong to the same family as carrots, are incredibly sweet and delicious, but they appear less often on our tables, which is a shame. Apparently that was not always the case. Early Louisiana cookbooks contain recipes for parsnips prepared a variety of ways: boiled and served with a butter or a cream sauce, fried, smothered, mashed, turned into boulettes and made into fritters. Turnips elicit strong feelings one way or the other, but those of us who love them have our favorite preparations. Some turnip varieties are so mild they can be eaten raw, but for cooking, I prefer those, such as the purple top, that have a more assertive flavor. I like to cook them with turnip greens and some kind of smoked meat. Turnips also are wonderful braised with duck. There are many varieties of winter squash, all of them delicious. Butternut squash, which is widely available, is excellent in a variety of preparations — turned into a soup, roasted alone or with pork, included in a vegetable or meat stew or made into a pie. The recipes this month include a carrot soup made from carrots that have been roasted with butter. In the process, their natural sugars caramelize and their flavor intensifies, creating a darker and more robust soup. For a vegetable dish, parsnips are first boiled in water, then sliced and browned in butter until their sugars caramelize and accentuate their natural sweetness. Turnips are cooked with their greens and ham hocks for a classically Southern one-pot meal. Finally, butternut squash is made into a pie sweetened with maple syrup and cradled in a cornmeal crust. n

LOUISIA YEAR OF THE

Louisianians are a diverse bunch, but we have a few common traits. For example, many Louisianians, no matter how close we are to our family, have an independent streak. Strength and persistence also come to mind when you consider people who are descended from some of the country’s earliest settlers, who fought through the most horrendous conditions, lived through the reigns of multiple countries’ monarchs or who immigrated here looking for a better way of life. Each year, we comb the state in search of

ANIANS Louisianians who exemplify these traits. We look for people who stand out in their professions, give back and represent what’s best about the Pelican State. From teachers and artists to healthcare professionals and philanthropists, these are the individuals who enhance our daily lives in more ways than one. We are thrilled to present to you our 2022 Louisianians of the Year.

26 LOUISIANA LIFE JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2022

ARTIST

VITUS SHELL

Monroe artist Vitus Shell is a remarkable artist who explores the African-American experience through strong, compelling and often unsettling images of Black contemporary life in America. It is art driven by irony, activism and his notion of Black “coolness.”

Born in Monroe in 1978, Shell, who has taught art at the University of Louisiana Monroe, Louisiana Tech University and Grambling State University, holds a bachelor of fine arts degree from the Memphis College of Art where he and other artists formed a collective that launched his career and those of other AfricanAmerican artists. “My paintings,” says Shell, “are geared toward the Black experience, giving agency to people from this community through powerful image deconstruction, sampling and remixing identity, civil rights and contemporary Black culture. My artistic goal is to exude the hip-hop lifestyle with a Southern vernacular.” That “Southern vernacular,” he says, takes on images that are “apt to pair depictions of grizzled hustlers, veterans of the street, with images of angelic school girls.” That imagery and what he describes as an “undeniable sense of coolness” are key elements in all of his work. So is the influence of hip-hop music. To Shell, hip-hop musicians are the “philosophers of a certain community” who are speaking out and documenting today’s social and political issues. “In my art,” Shell says, “I’m trying to understand myself through community, through history, through family, through other people’s stories and through broader conversations within my black culture.” New Orleans writer and photographer (and former Louisiana Life Louisianian of the Year) L. Kasimu Harris has likened Shell’s paintings to the poems of Harlem Renaissance poet Langston Hughes and to the writings of the early 20th-century Pan-African civil rights activist W.E.B Du Bois. Over the last two decades, Shell’s self-reflective journey through his art has brought him national success and exposure. His paintings have appeared in exhibitions across the nation, including high-visibility shows at the Ogden Museum of Southern Art’s 2017 Louisiana Contemporary and the Joan Mitchell Foundation’s 2008 show in New York City. The honors continue. In 2007 the Joan Mitchell Foundation awarded him a grant to attend the University of Mississippi where he received a master of fine arts degree. He spent the following summer at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Maine. In addition, Shell held prestigious artist residencies at the Joan Mitchell Foundation in New Orleans in 2016, another in 2018 at the Bemis Center for Contemporary Art in Omaha, and most recently at the Sam and Adele Golden Foundation for the Arts in New Berlin, New York. In describing his career, Shell says it has been “awesome” and “a beautiful experience and journey.” He hopes that one day his work will be considered important in the “canon of Black art” that “opened doors for other kids who grew up like me.” – By John R. Kemp

EDUCATION

“I’m so excited to return and invest in the community that invested so much in me,” Tedesco said. The 37-year-old Tedesco, music director for CHS Voices and a vocal music teacher, has been teaching for 14 years. She is the daughter of two educators. While Tedesco initially went into marketing after graduating from Loyola University of New Orleans, she quickly felt a calling to try education. So she started teaching at her alma mater of CHS. Tedesco said her goal as a teacher is to provide an academically rigorous classroom experience for her students while also providing opportunities for experiences where students can put their learned skills to use. Students participate in both solo and group vocal competitions, sometimes traveling to places like New York and Florida. They perform in musical theater productions like “Beauty and the Beast,” “Guys and Dolls,” and “Into the Woods.” They also sing in the community at events like Relay 4 Life. For classroom procedures, Tedesco said she uses a combination of setting high standards for her students and working with them individually. Part of working with them as individuals is remembering that many things are going on in the students’ lives outside of the classroom, both at home and on social media. She also said leading by example is important, not just in teaching students the material but teaching the students how to act. “Shakespeare once wrote that all the world’s a stage. We’re teaching kids how to perform on the stage of life,” Tedesco said. “We’re not only teaching content.” For new teachers, Tedesco recommended collaborating with coworkers to avoid burnout or feeling overwhelmed. She said she has greatly benefited from the time, insight, and assistance of her colleagues at CHS. “Remember that you’re not alone,” Tedesco said. While she is proud to receive the 2022 Louisiana Teacher of the Year award, she said she is far from the only Louisiana educator doing exemplary work day in and day out at schools across the state. “I am one of many who should be celebrated,” Tedesco said. – By Fritz Esker

ANNELISE CASSAR TEDESCO The word Chalmette native Annelise Cassar Tedesco, the 2022 Louisiana Teacher of the Year, most frequently mentioned in her interview was “community.” She strongly believes in the importance of forming a community at Chalmette High School with both her students and her fellow faculty members while serving the community as a whole.

JAMES CLESI CULINARY

James Clesi’s restaurant career began as a teenager at the Copeland’s on Veterans Boulevard in New Orleans. He bused tables, then moved to dishwashing. Clesi fell in love with the atmosphere in the kitchen — the smells, the sounds, the camaraderie. Now, he owns Clesi’s Restaurant and Catering in Mid-City.

Even though he worked in catering and restaurants throughout his youth and early adulthood, Clesi, now 41, didn’t always have the goal of running his own business. But after working for Heads and Tails Catering (a job he still refers to as a favorite) and after successfully catered a few events for his adult kickball league (Kickball of Crescent City) on a volunteer basis, he thought he might enjoy running his own company. “It gave me the confidence to go for it,” Clesi said. In 2013, Clesi started doing pop-ups in front of local bars. On Jan. 1, 2015, he opened a brick and mortar in the Mid-City neighborhood on Banks Street. It has since moved to a larger location on nearby Bienville. He is proud to be a part of Mid-City, the neighborhood his father grew up in. In the past two years, Clesi has also done extensive work during the onslaught of hurricanes that struck Louisiana. His own company caters WDSU-TV when the station starts 24-hours-a-day broadcasting. But he has also worked for his former employers at Heads and Tails helping out after the many hurricanes of the past two years. Last year, Clesi worked 53 days in a row in Lake Charles and New Orleans after Laura, Delta and Zeta struck. This year, he worked 29 days in a row in Houma after Ida. All of those workdays were 20-hours long. He would get a 2-hour nap after serving breakfast and another 2-hour nap after serving dinner. Clesi said this is exhausting, but his body acclimates to the schedule after a couple of days. In these gigs, Heads and Tails is providing food for utilities workers who are toiling nonstop to restore power to devastated areas. Whatever food isn’t used in a day is donated to churches and charities to help feed local residents. Clesi said he is only able to do this work thanks to the help of his siblings, who handle operations at Clesi’s Restaurant and Catering while he’s gone. “I wouldn’t be able to do any of this without my brother and sister,” Clesi said. – By Fritz Esker

Retired biology professor Malcolm F. Vidrine enjoyed a career ripe with accomplishments: author or coauthor of 20 books and numerous scientific articles, the discovery of leprosy in wild armadillos, and important work with mussels at the Watson Brake archaeological site in northeast Louisiana. Vidrine’s role in the latter was to identify mussels in the Watson Brake middens, food commonly eaten by Native Americans.

CONSERVATION

“At Frenchman’s Bend and Watson Brake, the mussels must have been eaten raw,” Vidrine explained. “The shells were intact and easy to identify — many of them appear very similar to shells found on the banks of streams today. I was able to generate good inventories of species and their compositions in the middens, which allowed me to make some general observations about the streams from which the mussels were collected. These findings combined with information from other members of the team made their way into two major publications, one in ‘Science’ and the other in ‘American Antiquity’.” Vidrine’s findings helped date Watson Brake to 3,500–2,800 BCE, one of the oldest in the country. Vidrine insists much of his research and accomplishments have been part of a team, including creating the Cajun Prairie Restoration Project in Eunice with Charles Allen. The two had been searching for surviving prairie remnants in Southwest Louisiana in the late 1980s and found a prime spot on a railroad right-of-way. “I was impressed by the variety of flowering plants in the July sun on that fortunate afternoon,” Vidrine remembered. “I told Charles that I had seen many stretches of such plants in Jefferson Davis Parish when I worked as the research director and mosquito biologist there. The next week we were driving around and searching for prairie remnants along railroads throughout the region. We found many of them, but only a few were of any significant size. The next five summers were spent inventorying the plants, butterflies and dragonflies of the prairie remnants. These searches culminated in papers, books and restoration projects.” The two convinced Eunice Mayor Curtis Joubert to lease a piece of railroad property as a city park and the Cajun Prairie Restoration Project was born. Today, visitors may walk through native plants within its 10 acres, currently owned by the Cajun Prairie Habitat Preservation Society. Vidrine continues the restoration work on three acres outside his Eunice home, a stretch of prairie called the Cajun Prairie Gardens. He and his wife, Gail, have published articles and books on their restoration efforts, plus they host groups to introduce others to a Louisiana environment they helped preserve and hope to propagate.– By Cheré Coen

HEALTHCARE

Barahona, 39, is a nurse practitioner with the South Central Louisiana Human Services Authority. While she has been a nurse for 16 years, she has been a nurse practitioner for eight. A nurse practitioner can prescribe medicine, perform physicals and provide a number of other basic healthcare services. Barahona provides primary care services in an integrated facility. What does that mean? She sees mental health patients, many of whom have never received primary care of any kind. She’s able to diagnose and help treat common problems like diabetes that these patients never knew they had. Barahona also spearheaded a medical assisted treatment program. This program helps her clients free themselves from opiate and alcohol addiction in an outpatient setting. The results are often rewarding. “When they get clean, it’s the most amazing thing,” Barahona said. “It’s nice to see the hope they have in their eyes.” It has been a challenging couple of years for nurses in general, but particularly for Barahona. At the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic when in-person contact was discouraged, she had to learn how to do televisits with her patients. This proved to be an even more useful skill in 2021 when Hurricane Ida devastated South Central Louisiana. Barahona’s home clinic is in Houma, but she works in multiple parishes in South Central Louisiana. Many of her clients have been displaced, but through telemedicine she is able to help them even if they have not yet been able to come home. Nursing can be a burnout profession even in normal times. But given the events of the past two years, even more nurses have felt the mental strain. Barahona said it’s her connection to her patients that keeps her from burning out. “I still love nursing. I still love talking to clients, getting to know them and their families,” Barahona said. “People notice when you truly care. You have to want to be there for your patients, to be an advocate for them.” When she’s not practicing medicine, Barahona spends time with her husband and 5-year-old daughter. They love traveling, especially road trips to Florida’s beaches. – By Fritz Esker

ANNIE BARAHONA Growing up in Houma, Annie Barahona dreamed of working in the medical field. When it came time to decide on a career path, Barahona chose nursing. Sixteen years after starting her nursing journey, the Louisiana State Nurses Association named Barahona the Advanced Practice Registered Nurse of the Year.

L to R: Josh Davis, Laura Russell, Jack Whitehead*, John Ed Bishop, Jeanise Hill, Sybil Kennedy *Selected to Super Lawyers

The story of Jack K. Whitehead, Jr.’s forebearers from their arrival in the United States served to mold and create Jack’s ambition to become a member of the Bar and serve his clients across the United States. The American Dream is still available to those who have ambition, dedication and a solid family footing. Jack’s father’s family history begins in the aftermath of the Civil War as Southern plantation owners turned to sharecropping and brought workers from Europe. The Whitehead Family came from Runnel Hills, England, and began work as sharecroppers in the Mississippi Delta. The family had eight sons, which meant a “work crew” in a tough economic environment. Imagine living in a rudimentary agricultural economy in the rural South eeking out a living. It’s hard to imagine sharecropping as a step up from English factories. James A. “Big Daddy” Whitehead lived in Flora, Madison County, Mississippi, with his bride Birdie Belle “Big Momma” Husband and began life as sharecroppers. At some point, Big Daddy decided to become a carpenter and moved his family to Yazoo City, Mississippi, where he developed a housebuilding and

S-6

lumber business. A search of the Yazoo County records reflects several loans to build houses in the area. The 1930 census records show the family lived on Grand Avenue, where the house stands today. The Great Depression changed rural Mississippi dramatically, as Big Daddy lost his lumber business. He moved his family south to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where he went to work at $5 a week at his brother-in-law’s car dealership. At some point he returned to carpentry and walked to work. His family grew to eight children. His two older sons, Acy and Fred, left school at age 16 and joined their father as carpenters. Acy and Fred’s army induction papers reveal that they each worked an average of 30 weeks a year. It was a hard-scrabble life at the bottom of the food chain. Big Daddy never really “made money” until Ryan Field was built during World War II. Acy fought across North Africa and Italy and earned a Bronze Star. Fred served as First Sergeant in a signal battalion attached to Patton’s 3rd Army Corps. He fought across France and was part of the effort to save the 101st Airborne Division in the Battle of Bulge. Big Daddy, Fred and Acy pooled together their mustering-out pay and created a one-

street development (Husband Street) in Baker, Louisiana. Fred and Acy went on to prosper as homebuilders in the Baton Rouge area. Jack K. Whitehead, Sr., in the family tradition, joined the military in 1951 and was assigned to an air base in England. One day, he was stationed to guard an English electrician who was working on base. Their conversation ended with an invitation to a family meal where Jack, Sr. met his future bride, Betty Johnstone. Jack, Jr. was born in England and emigrated to America where the family’s first house was a two-bedroom starter home on Husband Street. Jack, Jr.’s mother, Betty, was from coal-mining stock in Whitehaven, England. While on a trip to New York City, Jack discovered his greatgrandfather Jonathan Johnstone’s military records of his service in the Boer War and World War I. His records reflect that he was 47 years old when inducted in WWI and served in the Royal Pioneers as a laborer building roads and trenches in France. Pioneer Johnstone was gassed during the Battle of the Somme. He returned to England, received a pension and died from his war injuries in 1923. Life for the laborers in a coal-mining region was tough. SEE ADVERTISING DISCLAIMER ON PAGE S-3.

Jack’s grandfather, Bert Johnstone, always worked as a coal miner, first at the Duke Pit in Whitehaven, and later at the Arley Pit near Coventry, England. His mother remembers the military trucks delivering soldiers to Southern England for the D-Day Invasion and the Coventry bombing raid flames. Until 1955, the Johnstone family lived in company housing when they were offered an opportunity to buy the two-story, 100year attached home. Jack has his grandfather’s oil miner’s lamp. The Whitehead Family legacies survive each day as Jack Whitehead and the members of the Whitehead Law Firm advocate for their clients across the country. Not a day goes by without this team of dedicated professionals making a difference in the lives of individuals who face the labyrinth of work challenges and everyday life obstacles. Over the last 35 years, every challenge and obstacle Jack encountered helped mold the Whitehead Law Firm. A self-made man of integrity, Jack never had it easy. He decided to become a lawyer when, as a teenager, his family lost their business in Southwest Louisiana. He worked his way through college as a short-order cook, waiter, construction worker, oilfield roughneck and door-to-door salesman, all of which honed his God-given talents that serve his clients today. He states simply, “The family bankruptcy embedded a memory that created grit, drive and ambition.” Today the Whitehead Team balances caseloads against the federal government, insurance companies and corporate defendants across the country. “Prior to joining our firm, each and every member of our legal team must have overcome some life obstacle placed before them; otherwise, how can they fully understand what our clients face,” says Jack. Jack and his wife of 41 years, Eleanor, developed a plan in 1983 for Jack to enter LSU Law School where he received a full scholarship. Starting out in 1986 with $1,500, some office supplies and the support of his loving wife, Jack established the Whitehead Law Firm. While one may say it was a wild gamble, Jack saw it as a mission to help others understand the law and avoid missteps. In the early years, the Whitehead Law Firm honed its legal talents with clients in complex litigation advocacy, contracts, strategic

business solutions; governmental relations; adversarial bankruptcy proceedings; labor and employment; and ad valorem taxation. For the last 10 years, the Whitehead Law Firm has focused on issues unique to federal labor unions and their members across the U.S. The firm’s 35-year history has tremendous analytical base to serve their clients on many fronts. Today, Jack and his firm travel the country representing union locals on behalf of over 95,000 federal employees (Bureau of Prisons, Veterans Administration and civilian employees at U.S. Military bases). The firm also represents various members in state law enforcement agencies. The firm’s mission is simple: find fair and equitable treatment in the workplace and ensure hardworking people are treated fairly and paid what they deserve. While Jack, the managing senior partner, and the legal team vigorously battle for working people on critical issues involving federal sector employment issues, the firm also takes on select personal injury, federal workers’ compensation, state and local law enforcement disputes and highstakes litigation cases, as well as legislative and governmental affairs matters. Jack played an integral role keeping the “Qualified Immunity Doctrine” in place for Louisiana law enforcement officers as a lobbyist. The firm’s governmental relations clients include Tulane University and Campus Safe, a national school safety software company. Numerous companies call upon Jack when they want access at the highest levels of state and federal government. The best days are when the firm receives a simple thank you note from a client whose job and lost pay were restored. Whitehead Law Firm has more than 50 years of combined legal experience and trial advocacy with expertise across multiple areas. Jack once opined that he learned how to speak to a jury from selling dictionaries door-to-door while in college. He is licensed to practice in all Louisiana state and federal courts, the U.S. 5th Circuit Court of Appeals, U.S. Court of Federal Claims, United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, District of Columbia Circuit Court and U.S. Supreme Court. In addition to his selection to Super Lawyers, MartindaleHubbell® in 2011 recognized the Whitehead

Right: Jonathan Johnstone Family (circa 1915).

Law Firm as an AV Preeminent® law firm. Stanford Who’s Who added Whitehead to its list of notable professionals in 2012. Likewise, in 2020, Lawyers of Distinction recognized the firm’s talent in labor law. Jack’s Louisiana colleagues honored him with multiple positions of trust and leadership, namely: Louisiana State Bar Association’s President’s Award (2015); American Bar Association Delegate (2012-2014); Louisiana State Bar Association Treasurer (20102012) and House of Delegates (1994-2000; 2002-2008; 2012-2020); Louisiana State Law Institute Tax Sales Committee (2015-2021); and member of Louisiana Board of Legal Specialization Labor Law Advisory Board. For the past two years, Jack has served as Chairman of the Board for the American Red Cross Capital West Region, a 30-member board that oversees 22 counties across hurricaneprone South Louisiana. His involvement with the Red Cross spans more than 11 years. In 2019, the American Red Cross honored Jack as Board Member of the Year. During Hurricane Ida, Jack and the Capital West Board were at the command epicenter helping Louisiana coastal areas devastated in Hurricane Ida’s wake. The Whitehead Law Firm is committed to growing the legal profession and cultivates opportunities for young professionals who possess grit, determination and a powerful work ethic. The firm regularly hires interns from colleges and law schools and underwrites scholarships at Tulane University and LSU Law School. One of Jack’s passions is helping a working-class student accepted to Tulane University receive a full four-year scholarship. Currently, six Tulane students are in the “Class of Jack.” The firm also participates in diversity workshops and encourages community involvement, even closing the firm’s doors one day each year for a collective community service project. Active in the Baton Rouge community since 1986, the Whitehead Law Firm is known for creating sustainable fundraisers and donating time to causes such as St. Aloysius Boy Scout Troop 7, Boys & Girls Club of Greater Baton Rouge, American Red Cross, Karnival Krewe de Louisiane, Catholic High School Men’s Club, Sunrise Rotary Club of Baton Rouge and 100 Black Men of Metro Baton Rouge. The goal of the Whitehead Law Firm is to leave a lasting legacy in the community as it makes a positive difference in the lives of its clients and friends.

W

With no shortage of things to celebrate, Louisiana museums and landmarks provide a wealth of knowledge and insight to the people and places across this great state and their contributions to the surrounding world. At art museum exhibitions that highlight the state’s past, analyze its present, and speculate about its future, observers enjoy looking at society through an artist’s lens. At the state’s many science and history museums, observers learn about how we’ve arrived where we are today and see first-hand the innovations and moments that changed the world. and American art, the Alexandria Museum of Art (AMoA) fosters a culturally rich community by engaging, enlightening, and inspiring individuals through innovative art experiences. On display in the main gallery is the collection exhibition, Connected Visions, Louisiana’s Artistic Lineage. AMoA also presents temporary exhibitions three times a year on varying themes. The current exhibition, Monumental: Colossal Works from the Collection, features a selection of works that are large in scale or that present objects and figures as larger than life, as well as works that invite the viewer into an expanding and endless space. Beginning in March, AMoA will present the Smith & Wisznia Collection, a recent acqui-

sition of works created in post-Katrina New Orleans and curated by Terrence SandersSmith during this period when Louisiana experienced an art renaissance of renewal, rebirth, and rebuilding. For more information, visit themuseum.org. Housed in a historic train station on the banks of the Mississippi River in downtown Baton Rouge, the Louisiana Art & Science Museum (LASM) seeks to encourage discovery, inspire creativity, and foster the pursuit of knowledge. Unique to the region, LASM is the only art and science museum in a 600-mile radius and contains the awe-inspiring Irene W. Pennington Planetarium, which is the largest and most technologically-advanced planetarium in Louisiana. LASM’s interdisciplinary mission is evident through its art and science galleries, containing objects including an authentic ancient Egyptian mummy and a Triceratops skull on loan from Raising Cane’s and the Todd Graves Family. LASM’s Iridescence exhibition, on view until July 2022 and created in partnership with the LSU Department of Entomology, includes paintings, sculptures, and photographs by international artists that explore the fascinating phenomenon of iridescence. Learn more about LASM at lasm.org and explore the museum online at virtual-lasm.org. Located in Madisonville, the Lake Pontchartrain Basin Maritime Museum is an educational, non-profit organization “bringing Louisiana’s unique maritime history to life.” The museum is the caretaker of the Tchefuncte River Light Station and associated Lightkeeper’s Cottage, which has been relocated to the museum grounds. Exhibits include dioramas of Louisiana’s lighthouses, the Fresnel lens rescued from the Chandeleur Lighthouse, the lantern room rescued from the Pass Manchac Light, and exhibits and films depicting life on the area’s waterways. Additionally, the museum features a full-size replica of the Pioneer I—the forerunner of the CSS Hunley, the first submarine to sink a warship—and Razzle Dazzle, an exhibit highlighting the various methods used to camouflage ships during WWI and WWII. The museum’s education programs include Field Trips for students, outreach to schools, adult learning classes such as wooden boat building, and classes taught by the Power Squadron and Coast Guard on water safety, navigation, and more. The museum’s annual Wooden Boat Festival takes place annually in October and celebrates the art of wooden and classic boats while featuring over 100 boats. For more information, visit lpbmm.org. T

Shared Inheritances Field Notes on a small ‘country’ on the Gulf of Mexico STORY AND PHOTOS BY KEVIN RABALAIS

ive hours before Hurricane Ida’s landfall, limbs of the nearly 300-yearold Étienne de Boré oak in uptown New Orleans began to sigh in the first gusts. Nearby, opposite Audubon Zoo, the Mississippi River maintained its course, though soon, Ida would temporarily reverse it. We are the children of our landscape. Majestic oak and River, capital R: these are elements of our inheritance, as Louisianians. They are among the ideals that we romanticize and export to the world. They comprise part of our natural environment and help us construct our nature. Before and after storms strike our coast, I visit such places, custodians of local knowledge and memory, hoping to learn what they can teach about perseverance and resiliency, also grace. Years ago, in New Zealand, where you can dine in a Cajun restaurant and then step outside to view the Southern Cross in the night sky, the premier poet laureate explained an aspect of his countrymen’s psyche to me. “For us,” Bill Manhire said, “Antarctica is always at the back of the mind, just as the Outback is always at the back of the mind of Australians, and just as the West is for Americans.” Although I understood the notion, the West has never pulsed in my mind like, say, the currents of the Atchafalaya. One urge personal with East — to sit them down and discuss Texas toads. the problematic simplification — paled against another: Come to Louisiana, I wanted to say. Witness the diversity of our small and beautiful country on the Gulf of Mexico. Let us begin by pronouncing its name. Listen to five syllables unfurl like the title of an epic poem. Our diversities extend beyond accents and recipes that change by neighborhood. Show a citrus farmer south of Belle Chasse or a fisherman who works off the coast of

Facts and Figures • Driskill Mountain is privately owned and maintained by volunteers. The western side of the mountain has been owned by the Jones family since 1883, the majority of the trail made public courtesy of the Lou Jones Family. • Access the summit via two trails. The lesser-travelled trail takes hikers over False Mountain before elevating to the summit of Driskill Mountain. The wellmarked main trail — 1.8 miles round-trip — has a vertical gain of 150 feet. • In 1934, the outlaws Bonnie and Clyde died in an ambush near Sailes, southwest of Arcadia, “Heart of Louisiana’s Piney Hills Country” and Bienville Parish seat. Farther south, Saline served as a filming location for “Blaze,” the biopic about Earl Long starring Paul Newman.

a slow pace, you can summit Driskill in under an hour, even if you like to crawl around on the ground, as I do, because while the Cascades and Sierra Nevadas offer immediate gratification, Louisiana’s trails encourage introspection. Here, fulfillment requires patience. We remove ourselves from the familiar by focusing on what is in front of us. An unflinching gaze at the bark of a tree, a turning leaf, or backyard bird has the

potential to alter the way we comprehend our place in the world. Such consideration ultimately reveals an acknowledgment of what the land offers. With that comes a responsibility to care for it, to leave it better than we found it, to pass it on. Looking deeply into the many corners of Louisiana helps us to recognize several things. We learn, fairly quickly, that we have more in common than a shared humidity. Our history, culture, and the land itself — those true shared inheritances — continually remind us that this place, our place, is as exotic and strange and bountiful as any on earth. n

ike so many people suffering from poor health and living in a cold climate, Mary Wilson of New London, Canada, headed south in the hopes of more agreeable weather healing what ailed her. The Catholic novice arrived at the Society of the Sacred Heart in Grand Coteau on Sept. 20, 1866, but her health continued to deteriorate. She was admitted to the Sacred Heart infirmary in October vomiting blood and suffering from fever and violent headaches. She barely ate and drank little and by December, her end appeared near. Wilson was so weak she couldn’t speak so she placed the image of John Berchmans on her mouth and thought, “If it be true that you can work miracles,” she instructed the Jesuit scholastic who died in 1621, “I wish you would do something for me.” The response she received, according to her testimony, was “Sister, you will get the desired habit. Be faithful. Have confidence. Fear not.” The figure of John Berchmans appeared to Wilson and she was immediately healed. Her doctor’s sworn statement of Feb. 4, 1867, was, “Not being able to discover any marks of convalescence, but an immediate return to health from a most severe and painful illness, I am unable to explain the transition by any ordinary natural laws.” The Catholic Church deemed John Berchmans a saint in 1888 based on his miraculous healing of Wilson and it remains the only documented and Vaticanapproved miracle in the United States. Visitors may visit the Shrine of Saint John Berchmans at Grand Coteau’s Schools of the Sacred Heart, as well as Le Petit Musée dedicated to the history of the academy. The campus consists of both the Academy of the Sacred Heart for girls and Berchmans Academy of the Sacred Heart for boys. The shrine and museum are part of the St. Landry Parish Spiritual Trail, a guide to the parish’s many historic churches, cemeteries, shrines and the Creole Heritage Folklife Center. “Your soul will enjoy the encounters with Christianity, heritage, art, music and more along the trail,” said Herman Fuselier, executive director of St. Landry Parish Tourist Commission.

Naturally, the trail includes the Sacred Heart campus. “The Academy of the Sacred Heart is celebrating 200 years of guiding young women in faith and learning,” Fuselier said. “The school’s history is interlaced with the Civil War and the impact of slavery. Today, students from as far as China and South America are learning at the Academy. The past and present at Sacred Heart are rich testimonies to the culture of south Louisiana.” In nearby Acadia Parish, a young girl waits for canonization. Charlene Marie Richard of Richard grew up like many in her small Cajun community and among her large family: She attended middle school and participated in sports. Charlene was a devout Catholic and, after reading a book about St. Therese, wondered if she could become a saint if she prayed hard enough. At age 12, Charlene was diagnosed with acute lymphatic leukemia and hospitalized. She died two weeks later but accepted her fate with grace, praying unselfishly for others to be healed. Richard died on Aug. 11, 1959, and is buried at St. Edward Catholic Church Cemetery in Richard. From her death until today, people visit “the Little Cajun Saint’s” grave to ask for intercession in matters that range from healing to employment. Many have claimed miracles. Her petition for sainthood, which may take years to acquire, remains in process but last year Bishop J. Douglas Deshotel of the Diocese of Lafayette advanced the causes for Richard’s canonization. n

Birthplace of a King Shake, rattle and roadtrip your way to Tupelo for Elvis’ birthday Jan. 8, or any time of year BY CHERÉ COEN

78 LOUISIANA LIFE JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2022

or die-hard rock and roll fans, January marks the birthday of the musical genre’s “King.” One of the best places to celebrate Elvis Presley’s emergence into the world — Jan. 8 — is in his birthplace of Tupelo, Mississippi. Elvis Aaron Presley was born in this Northeastern Mississippi town in 1935 and lived in a modest two-room house built by his father Vernon and Elvis’ grandfather and uncle. His twin brother, Jesse Garon Presley, was stillborn so the young Elvis grew up in Tupelo without siblings. The Presleys moved around while living in Mississippi, and headed to Memphis for better opportunities when Elvis was a teenager, but that small shotgun house has been restored and is available for touring at the Elvis Presley Birthplace in Tupelo. The site also includes the church that Elvis attended and where he was first exposed to Southern gospel music, statues of the King and a reenactment film of Elvis performing in church as a young child. It’s one of the many Elvis sites in Tupelo, including Priceville Memorial Gardens where Jesse Presley is buried. Visitors may peruse Tupelo Hardware where Elvis visited to purchase a rifle and his mother talked him into a guitar instead. Or Johnnie’s Drive-In where

Elvis was a regular, enjoying Johnnie’s burgers with an RC Cola back in the day. The dining room at Johnnie’s is currently closed, so tourists won’t be able to sit in the same booth the King once graced, but the restaurant still serves up those burgers as a drive-in. There are so many places to experience where Elvis spent his youth, the Tupelo Convention and Visitor’s Bureau offers a self-guided driving tour and an Elvis bike tour. For instance, visitors can view Elvis’ library card at the Lee County Library (Elvis loved reading comic books), pause at Milam Junior High, where Elvis gave a farewell performance when his family moved to Memphis or view the historic Lyric Theatre where Elvis watched Western films. “It’s rumored that Elvis got his first kiss at the Lyric,” said Jennie Bradford Curlee, public relations director for the Tupelo Convention and Visitor’s Bureau. Graceland’s “ultimate” winner takes the coveted title and goes on tour. “It’s all things Elvis, all week long,” Curlee said of the Tupelo festivities. Regardless of when you visit — or if you’re an Elvis fan or not — Tupelo offers boutique shopping and great restaurants in its quaint downtown. Park Heights Restaurant, for instance, serves up hand-cut steaks and craft cocktails on its rooftop overlooking Fairpark. Queen’s Reward creates sweet meads in Tupelo, the state’s first meadery and many times utilizing 100 percent Mississippi honey. The tasting room sells its mead by the glass or bottle and is open Tuesday through Saturday. There are 2,000 hotel rooms in Tupelo, Curlee said, but the city will get its first boutique hotel

Hotel Tupelo will offer 80 rooms and a locally-owned restaurant and bar and be within walking distance to downtown. “It’s going to have so many local touches, from the coffee in your room to the scents you’ll smell when you walk in the door,” she said. Getting to Tupelo from Louisiana is a straight shot up U.S. Hwy. 55 through Mississippi, then east on Hwy. 278 through Oxford. For a leisurely drive that’s historic as it’s beautiful, take the Natchez Trace, a 444-mile national park highway that skirts Tupelo and includes the Parkway headquarters just north of town. n
