Midnight Trains

et us pause a moment to consider midnight trains: Winston Hall is a Shreveport musician, song writer and music history buff. His town was once the home of the “Louisiana Hayride,” a Grand Ole Opry-type radio concert that helped grease many careers including that of Elvis and Hank Williams. Williams lived in the Shreveport area for a while around 1948. His first house just so happened to be down the road a piece from where Hall would one day live. It is relevant to this story that a railroad track was across the street from the house. In 1949 Williams recorded, “I Am So Lonesome I Could Cry.” Elvis, himself, would refer to the piece as the “saddest song I ever heard,” but oh there was such poetry in the sadness.
The silence of a falling star, Lights up a purple sky. And as I wonder where you are, I’m so lonesome I could cry. Williams, who is credited as the song writer, recorded it in 1949. So, the record would have come into being around the time that the singer was living in Shreveport across the street from the railroad track. Conceding that this is pure conjecture, Hall nevertheless says, “when I laid in bed hearing the midnight train whining low past my house on Mansfield Road every night, I couldn’t help but believe that Hank too laid in bed hearing the same damn thing night after night after night and that sank into his songwriting subconscious.” Hear that lonesome whippoorwill? He sounds too blue to fly. The midnight train is whining low: I’m so lonesome I could cry. Huddie Ledbetter was born near Shreveport in 1888. In his world he learned to play the early blues that was so popular in the Black community. As an adult he developed a following under the name of Lead Belly. He also developed a criminal record and spent time in various jails including Angola. Behind bars he would have heard a southern folksong that was especially popular among prisoners, “The Midnight Special.” The song would eventually be recorded by many people, but Lead Belly arguably made the definitie recording.

Dean Wilson spent four months alone in the Atchafalaya swamps’ deep basin with “a spear, a few hooks, a bow and arrows.” He lived to tell the tale and discuss his career saving the basin. Keep Calm and Parent On How to ease your child’s anxiety during (and after) the pandemic

his past year has been full of anxiety and uncertainty for people across the globe. That is also true for children, who have endured months of staying at home, as well as separation from friends and fun activities. Even though in-person schools are back in session in the New Orleans area, children may still feel anxious during the pandemic and there are ways you can help them through this difficult time. LIMIT MEDIA EXPOSURE
Gina LaRose, LPC, LMFT said it’s important to minimize children’s access to information when so much of the news is dominated by COVID-19 cases. Too much exposure to the news can lead to obsessing about worst-case scenarios. Preventing information overload can be hard to do in the internet era, but you should at least avoid having the TV news on frequently. “Even if they aren’t talking about what they’re hearing, kids are constantly absorbing information,” said LaRose. HEALTHY TALK AND ROUTINES
If children do talk about their feelings, parents should encourage them. You should be supportive
8 LOUISIANA LIFE JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2021
and understanding of any concerns the children in your life have at the moment. Validate their feelings and acknowledge that this is a difficult, stressful time for everyone and that it’s OK to be upset from time to time. Routines are essential for children. If they’re still doing at-home learning full-time or as part of a hybrid plan at their school, make a schedule for them to stick to when they are at home. “Kids thrive off of structure and knowing what to expect,” LaRose said.
Also known as green onions, scallions are an excellent source of fiber to keep you feeling full, lower your cholesterol levels as well as lowering your chances for diabetes and heart disease.
SET AN EXAMPLE
The Child Mind Institute (childmind.org) noted that going back to school after months of stay-at-home learning might provoke anxiety in some children, too. That can come in the form of separation anxiety or in fears of contracting the virus. The Child Mind Institute recommended that parents set the tone for kids and model good coping strategies. If you seem anxious, your children will pick up on that and likely be anxious, too. “Monitoring and managing your own stress level is going to help minimize your child’s anxieties as well,” LaRose said. n

LOUISIANA WRITER AWARD The Louisiana Center for the Book in the State Library of Louisiana recognized author and Tulane professor John M. Barry in fall of 2020 as the recipient of the 21st Louisiana Writer Award. Barry, who is also one of our 2021 Louisianians of the Year honorees, was recognized for his work documenting Louisiana history and the state’s coastal restoration efforts and challenges. He is the author of “The Great Influenza: The Story of the Deadliest Pandemic in History” and “Rising Tide: The Great Mississippi Flood of 1927 and How It Changed America.” Previous winners of the award include Ernest Gaines, James Lee Burke, Tim Gautreaux and Johnette Downing.

elief in the resurrection runs deep in Dreux Barra’s life, and as it turns out, in his gumbo pot, too. The Youngsville-based food entrepreneur’s holy trinity mix — that’s bell pepper, celery and onion, for those unbaptized in the wild ways of traditional Louisiana cooking — “comes back to life, just like you chopped them yourself,” as he likes to explain at the many markets and cooking demonstrations he attends throughout Acadiana. Barra’s C’est Tout (French for “that’s all” and pronounced “say-too”) is jars of chopped and air-dried trinity mix that when added to water, stock or right into the gumbo pot, flowers with a savory, aromatic edge that fills the room and conjures memories of family gatherings and holidays past; of hot Saturday nights with the Tigers on the tube; of pots full of hot food and arms full of warm embraces; of invitations signed, sealed and delivered with a simple “y’all come.” “I’m not a chef, I’m a Cajun cook,” says the Lafayette native and veteran of the private security industry. “No degree. No culinary institute. Just the joy of being in the kitchen and years of making delicious food with my family.” Barra grew up one of six in a large Roman Catholic family. Summers were spent at his grandmother’s home in New Orleans’ 9th Ward where he was usually at her side in the kitchen watching and learning. “The smell of cut onions immediately brings me back to her house,” Barra says. “My mom taught us all how to cook, but my grandma really introduced Creole cooking. She was always working with rice and what we now know as the holy trinity. When adding garlic, it’s holy trinity ‘wit da Pope.’” Barra, now 57, refers to himself as his brand’s “Chief Chopping Officer.” Years ago he used to make large batches of beef jerky to donate to the local men’s shelter and give to the neighbors. In late 2016, he had a particularly expansive largesse of vegetables in his pantry and began experimenting with cutting and air drying them like he had his thin strips of beef. “I was raised in a ‘cook what you catch and kill,’ family, a ‘never throw anything out family,’ so I thought there was something that could be done with these vegetables,” he says After six months of experimenting he walked into a meeting with a marketing agency and walked out with their confidence. “That put a little grease in my gear.” It also put his product into stores. More than 50 retail outlets, mostly mom-and-pops, carry C’est Tout products, and a handful of restaurants are cooking with it in their jambalaya and etouffee now, too. “With the pandemic, I think people are spending more time in their kitchens and wanting to expand what they can cook themselves for their families,” Barra says. As long as it is stored inside and kept dry, C’est Tout can last for years. He’s produced more than 6,000 jars to date, all while maintaining his full-time job.
What has been the biggest challenge as a food entrepreneur during COVID-19? The inability to do cooking demonstrations in stores and at farmers markets. It has been good to see that more people are cooking at home though and trying new things. You’re a problemsolver and you don’t like to waste anything. What’s behind that ethos? Waste not, want not. Growing up with six kids taught us that we all needed to do our part to get the most from all things. With two older brothers, I don’t think I got my own brand new pair of jeans until I bought them myself!
“I never planned on being an entrepreneur,” Barra explains. “This is a hobby business for now, but it’s growing.” Barra lives in Acadiana with his wife Monique, two yellow labs and two rabbits. He served in Desert Storm and has lived all over the country working in private security for Home Depot and Procter & Gamble. He has investigated the Russian mafia, arsons in Brooklyn and gangs in Los Angeles and when he finally returned to Louisiana, he decided he wanted to give back to the warm home he never stopped loving. “This product has really humbled me in so many ways,” Barra says. “I really appreciate Louisiana so much more now.” While he’s negotiating a deal with a larger food retailer to expand his business further, Barra uses C’est Tout for his weekly Bible studies. Every Thursday night he cooks for a group of men from his church. Duck gumbo is a favorite. This is a new kind of family, one building memories, too, and around a pot of Louisiana food all the same. “I try to let things happen as they happen — trust God,” Barra says. “It’s hard to explain, but I’m happy to share something that helps people make fewer runs to the grocery, that helps people in the kitchen to make delicious food for the people they love.” n
When not working, what do you love to do? Fishing the Basin and in Vermilion Bay. While I don’t get a ton of opportunity, duck hunting has been a big part of my outdoor adventures. For Yankees out there, what is it about Cajun and Creole cooking that makes it special? To me, it’s more than just mixing ingredients. It’s about the group you are with when preparing and eating. When I am preparing dinner for my men’s group, I am usually not quite finished cooking when everyone shows up. Everyone gathers in the kitchen and just catches up on life; great conversations happen.

Beading Rhythms Big Chief Demond Melancon explores history, passes the art and attributes of beading to the next generation of New Orleans Mardi Gras Indians BY JOHN R. KEMP
N
ew Orleans is a gumbo of people of all different nationalities and races and all those people show a lot of love to each other,” says artist and Mardi Gras Indian Big Chief Demond Melancon. “I’m part of that gumbo.” Melancon, who resides with his wife Alicia in the city’s Bywater neighborhood, is a prominent “contemporary bead artist” and Big Chief of the Lower 9th Ward Young Seminole Hunters Mardi Gras tribe. His beaded portraits and exquisite Mardi Gras Indian costumes called suits — all made with thousands of tiny colored beads — are mystical symbols of an African American Creole culture that courses through the city’s veins and historic
14 LOUISIANA LIFE JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2021
neighborhoods like the rhythmic motions of the Mississippi. To him, they are spiritual connections to the African diaspora and to elders who keep those traditions alive. Born and raised in the city’s Lower 9th Ward, Melancon has come a long way in recent decades. His intricately composed and sewed beaded Mardi Gras suits and portraits, depicting greats such as Louis Armstrong, Aretha Franklin and Professor Longhair, have gained him international acclaim with exhibitions at major museums in New Orleans, New York, Chicago, Miami and, most impressively, at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. In addition, a 2019 documentary about Melancon’s work premiered at New York’s prestigious Tribeca Film Festival and the Berlin International Film Festival. Last October the Joan Mitchell Foundation awarded Melancon a fourmonth artist residency at the foundation’s national center in New Orleans. The 42-year-old Melancon, who studies the works of Italian Renaissance and Dutch masters as well as African American artists, says his bead art has given him purpose, a recognized place in the city’s art world, a sense of self-reliance and broken barriers. He now passes these attributes on to younger generations in his tribe.

Melancon’s evolution as a bead artist and Mardi Gras Indian is uniquely New Orleans. When he was 10, his mother took him to see his first Mardi Gras Indians, including the late Allison “Tootie” Montana. On returning home, the young Melancon told his mother that’s what he wanted to do. When he was 14, Mardi Gras Indian Chiefs Ferdinand Bigard and Keith “Keito” Jones taught him the intricate beadwork and Mardi Gras Indian traditions. He later recorded tribal dances and taught himself the “Bamboula,” an AfroCaribbean drumbeat and dance that arrived in New Orleans in the early 19th century with émigrés fleeing the Haitian revolution. In 1993 Melancon joined the Seminole Hunters Tribe as a “spy boy” and in 2013 elders named him Big Chief of his own tribe, the Young Seminole Hunters in the Lower 9th Ward, who now dance the Bamboula while chanting to the rhythms of “Ooh Nah Nae.” The 19th -origins of the Mardi Gras Indians are a bit cloudy. Some say they adopted the Indian dress as a tribute to local Native Americans who gave refuge to runaway slaves, while others believe it grew out of the mingling of Native Americans, enslaved Africans and free Creoles-of-color at Congo Square in New Orleans.
Whichever is correct, the tradition thrives with each new generation. Not all Mardi Gras Indian costumes are the same, however. While many feature Native American images, Melancon, a follower of the pan-African Rastafarian religious sect, fills his with intricately beaded portraits of historic African warriors and leaders, such as Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie. Rastafarianism, Melancon explains, is an Afro-centric, Bible-based religion popular among descendants of enslaved Africans in the Caribbean and the Americas, including New Orleans. To them, Selassie was divine. They also believe God, whom they call “Jah,” came down to earth as Jesus Christ. Melancon featured “Jah” in his 2020 Mardi Gras suit “Jah Defender” with beaded portraits of Selassie and, among others, a Nyabinghi warrior on horseback. “Getting linked with these people has made me who I am,” he says, pointing to images of Selassie, Jamaican musician Bob Marley and others tattooed on his arms. With those symbols guiding him and the sounds of Big Chief Monk Boudreaux’s “Lightning and Thunder” and Fela Kuti’s African beat filling his studio, Melancon creates his artwork in what seems a continuous rhythmic motion. It’s like a dance, he says, with the sounds of the needle moving in and out of the canvas like a drumbeat. “When I’m beading and doing my suits,” Melancon says. “It’s like I’m holding hands with God.” Because of COVID-19, Melancon says he will not parade this Mardi Gras. n

I
n work and in life, artist Rebecca Rebouché is enthralled by the beauty of the natural world. Trees, birds, butterflies and other flora and fauna dominate the whimsical language of her symbolic paintings. They also surround her rural Northshore house. “I call it the treehouse,” she says, of the three-story, rustic-modern structure. “It’s very vertical, like a box on stilts.” The house was originally built by the late artist David Abel and his wife in the 1970s. Through a friend of her mother, Rebouché found the property in 2010. “I felt I had this duty to this artist I never met to shepherd this home into the future,” says Rebouché, who splits her time between New Orleans and the Northshore. “It was in disrepair. It was beautiful and inspirational and wonderful, but it felt like it was crumbling beneath me. My goal was to one day give it the care it deserved.” In 2018, Rebouché hired Cicada Architecture, a young New Orleans firm, with whom she shared a common vision for the project: to save the house, but also add on to it in such a way that highlighted and respected the “clean, modern, minimalist, natural house in the woods” aesthetic of the artist who built it. That called for keeping the pine floors, exposed wood ceilings and beam work of the original 1,200square foot house, while renovating it with new siding, plumbing and baths, as well as a new kitchen and roof. “We kept the bones but reinforced the existing framework, updated everything else and strengthened it up to code,” says Rebouché. The renovation also included a striking 400-squarefoot addition consisting of a new first-floor master suite on one side and a new deck on the other. Along

with her desire to honor the original homeowners’ intent, Rebouché’s commitment to simplified, sustainable living informed every step of the redesign. “I wanted longevity and low maintenance and quality materials that would work with the elements of the environment instead of against it,” she says. Environmentally friendly decisions were made at every turn. The addition is wrapped in honey-hued Cumaru (Brazilian Teak), a sustainable hardwood suited to moist environments. The base of the kitchen island, the kitchen shelves, the dining room ceiling and a built-in bookshelf are all crafted of wide wooden floorboards reclaimed from a shed on the property that had to be torn down. All of the windows are double paned as well as operable so they can be opened during temperate weather. The kitchen’s vintage cast iron sink is a repurposed find that Rebouché stumbled upon while walking through the woods; its refrigerator is a smaller, more energy efficient model than the one it replaced. “It’s not about the cost of a refrigerator,” says Rebouché. “It’s about the cost on the environment.” Indoor-outdoor living is the heartbeat of the house. New windows increase the prevailing emphasis on natural light (Rebouché often works a full day without turning on a single light switch) and further accentuate the landscape. with thick wooden treads, now features rectangular windows strategically placed at different angles and heights so that the views are seen from a variety of perspectives. “The windows are almost like frames for paintings of the surrounding environment,” says Rebouché. “And the stairs are a design element that allow light to pass through them.” While windows bring the outdoors in, multiple outdoor living spaces bring the indoors out. A firstfloor deck, a private deck with an outdoor shower off the master suite, and a roof terrace, where the artist enjoys painting en plein air, were all part of the renovation. Despite the private setting of the house, Rebouché likes to entertain, especially outside, and has hosted such events as outdoor movies, “a bluegrass pickin’ party” and a mini festival where friends camped in tents and Airstream trailers.

Having moved out of the house during the 18-month project, the artist says she returned to the finished space last spring with fresh eyes. “After the renovation I didn’t want to fill it back up with things I had,” she says. Inspired by the architecture of the house and by trips to South Africa and Mexico, she wanted to create an interior in harmony with the outside world. Furnishings are sparse, colors are warm and there are sleek accents of black. Through a partnership with Anthropologie, images from Rebouché’s colorful paintings have appeared on apparel and home goods, but only a few of her works are displayed in the house. A mural covers the wall behind the guest room bed and a vine that looks as if it came to life from one of her canvases climbs the wall of the master bath.
(As of November 2020, the wallpaper mural is available on rebeccarebouche.com.) For Rebouché, sustainability means living in a purposeful, organized way that reduces clutter. She added closets, drawers and cabinets with the renovation, but also shops for fresh foods, and avoids plastics and other unnecessary packaging and waste. The minimalist environment has in turn given her open space to fill with her prolific creativity. “In the design process, I leaned what is considered the norm for kitchens and baths and how they are used, and I got to know myself better and what I wanted,” she says. “I resisted modern pressures to put more. Simple is beautiful.” n

PJ MORTON
Grammy-winning recording artist, keyboardist for Maroon 5 and New Orleans native PJ Morton released his new album, “Gospel According to PJ,” in August. He said people often asked him if he would do a gospel album, in part because his father is Bishop Paul Morton. Recently, he worked on several songs for a separate project. The songs were not used, but Morton didn’t want to see them go to waste, so he used them to start “Gospel According to PJ.” Much of the recording was done after the COVID-19 pandemic began, which necessitated Morton’s collaborations with around 20 other artists to be done virtually. He said being in the room with other musicians is ideal, but added that the virtual recordings made scheduling easier. Pre-pandemic, the other artists would be touring and promoting their own work, so it would have been much harder to secure their participation. In a very dark year around the world, Morton said gospel music can provide comfort to people. “There’s no genre that does love, hope and light like gospel music,” Morton said. The album also features interludes where Morton talks to his father. The idea came after Morton had already recorded the songs for the album. He said the conversations provide connective thematic material that smooths the transition between songs. They’re also tribute to the impact Bishop Morton had on PJ’s life. “How did I arrive here?” Mortan said. “There’s no way to tell that story without my father and his influence on me.” BY FRITZ ESKER

Diners often don’t consider how food reaches the plate. But Mosquito Supper Club Founder and Chef Melissa Martin wants people to think about that and to support restaurants who buy from local shrimpers and fishermen. Located in New Orleans’ Uptown neighborhood, the restaurant offers a prix fixe menu of Cajun cooking with farmto-table ingredients. The latter is a point of pride and importance to Martin, who grew up in Chauvin. “When you eat at Mosquito Supper Club, you will know we’ve gone out of our way to make sure you’re getting the best quality ingredients,” Martin said.
Even Martin’s cookbook, “Mosquito Supper Club: Cajun Recipes from a Disappearing Bayou,” isn’t just a list of recipes. In it, Martin also spends time paying tribute to her “muses” as she calls them — the women in her family who shaped her as a chef — writing extensively about each ingredient. “When you sit down to a bowl of gumbo, you need to understand all the elements,” Martin said. “I want people to know where the ingredients came from and how they got here.” Running the business side of a restaurant often means training others to cook the food and trusting them with those responsibilities. But Martin still finds joy in cooking. “Whenever I’m actually getting to cook,” Martin said. “That is when I am the most peaceful.” BY FRITZ ESKER

Sometimes an entrepreneur has a great idea for a business, but doesn’t know how to implement it. They may not know how to best get their message out, how to manage employees or any other number of logistical concerns. That’s where Kevin Wilkins and his growth consulting company Trepwise enters the picture. Wilkins moved to New Orleans in 2010 with his wife, a Crescent City native. They wanted to be a part of the city’s rebuilding economy post-Hurricane Katrina. The company he founded focuses on maximizing businesses’ potential. Its name is a combination of the word “trep,” short for entrepreneur, and his wife’s maiden name “Wise.” He said they focus on people, planning and process with their clients. “You need the right people in the right chairs doing the right jobs in the right way,” Wilkins said. “The best ideas poorly implemented get you nothing.” Trepwise also helps its clients create a sustainable work culture. If companies are getting a lot of stuff done and making money, they still may not be successful long term if employees are burning out or unhappy in their work. Wilkins said Trepwise’s mission isn’t just good for individual entrepreneurs; it’s good for the New Orleans community as a whole. “I don’t just want to do well as an organization; I want to do good work as an organization,” Wilkins said. Herman Fuselier of Opelousas worked as a sports writer for the Tuscaloosa News and enjoyed traveling the country covering Alabama sports. But he missed his early years in radio. While pitching a Louisiana radio show to WUAL on the University of Alabama campus, Fuselier related how he attended zydeco great Clifton Chenier’s wake in Opelousas. The station manager’s eyes grew large at Fuselier’s story. “I might have gotten the job because of that,” Fuselier said. “People are fascinated with Louisiana.” Coupled with being homesick, the epiphany brought Fuselier home. “Looking back at Tuscaloosa, it made me appreciate Louisiana a lot more. I saw what I was missing.” Fuselier returned to Acadiana but kept broadcasting “Bayou Boogie” in Tuscaloosa and on KRVS in Lafayette. Fuselier has also worked as feature writer and editor at Lafayette’s Daily Advertiser newspaper and contributes to music publications such as OffBeat. He has interviewed practically every living zydeco and Cajun musician through his jobs and as guest host at Festivals Acadiens et Créole and the New Orleans Jazz Festival. Twice, Fuselier has covered the Grammys. Though his work has taken him nationwide, Fuselier happily calls Opelousas home. He currently works as executive director of the St. Landry ParishTourist Commission, in which he promotes the parish known for the birthing of zydeco and swamp pop. He hopes to bring his musical expertise to develop a music heritage trail throughout St. Landry and surrounding parishes. In mid-March, Bob Thames was seated at his desk at Great Raft Brewing in Shreveport, staring at a bottle of bourbon. Specifically, the bottle was his treasured Old Weller Bourbon 107 Antique, or “Weller Antique,” as it is known to collectors. Thames’ role at the brewery is to maintain relationships with restaurant and bar owners, managers and waitstaff. Prior to the pandemic, most bar managers in Shreveport talked to Thames about upcoming beer releases, promotions and tastings. As Louisiana’s COVID-19 numbers climbed, those conversations turned to temporary closures, PPP loans and layoffs. “I was looking at my bottle of Weller Antique, and I just said to myself: ‘I’m gonna use this to do a little bit of good’,” Thames said. He figured he could raffle off the bourbon in a creative way and raise a few hundred dollars for out-of-work
bartenders. He stuffed the Bourbon into a mostly-empty box of Kleenex, snapped a photo and posted the picture to Facebook with a message: “I’d like to raffle off this box of tissue and its contents.” “In my wildest dreams, I was thinking that I may raise $500,” Thames said. The post went live on the afternoon of Tuesday, March 14. By Wednesday evening Thames had received hundreds of mobile payments totaling more than $2,000, and his Facebook inbox held dozens of messages from supporters looking to donate raffle prizes. Thames spent April and May conducting raffles, contacting out-ofwork bartenders and waitresses, and crisscrossing town handing out $100 bills and PPE. Raffle benefactors ranged from the tattooed barkeep at a contemporary eatery to a single mom waitressing at Buffalo Wild Wings. He met them in parking lots, at the brewery or outside of their home. He frequently met someone for the first time while dropping off a $100 bill. When the fundraiser ended in June, Thames had distributed more than $27,000. BY CHRIS JAY

NATHALIE ROY How do you teach kids about the ancient world in an immersive, hands-on way? Nathalie Roy, a teacher at Glasgow Middle School, does just that with her Roman Technology class. Some of Roy’s projects for this class have included building sundials, catapults and mini kilns. Like any STEM class, the COVID-19 pandemic has dramatically altered the way Roy handles the material. Every day, she teaches a set of children who are physically in the classroom with her and another group that’s learning virtually. She now cannot assign anything that doesn’t fit into a kit the kids can take home. It’s a challenge, but not an insurmountable one. “I had to think of it as an engineer would,” Roy said. “I had to ask myself ‘What are my constraints?’” Roy, who is in her 27th year of teaching, came to her Roman Technology class by way of being a Latin teacher. When schools emphasized integrating STEM into different disciplines, she asked herself “How can I bring STEM into a Latin class?” The end result has been a big hit with students. She now teaches three sections of Roman Technology, and she loves it. “I’m a student at heart,” Roy said. “This has allowed me to continue my study of the classical world and share it with my students.” Teaching can be a difficult, mentally and emotionally demanding profession even in a year without 2020’s gauntlet of setbacks and challenges. Roy said she has carried on because of her love of her students and of learning itself. She said if teachers let their students see how much they care, the job becomes easier. “When a child knows that you care about them, they’re more willing to do something they might otherwise not do,” Roy said. “We need people who care.” BY FRITZ ESKER

JOHN M. BARRY It may not seem natural that a Rhode Island native would develop such close ties to Louisiana and its vanishing coastline, but that is what happened for John M. Barry, author of the award-winning “Rising Tide: The Great Mississippi Flood of 1927 and How It Changed America” and recent recipient of the 21st annual Louisiana Writer Award. Barry first visited New Orleans for Mardi Gras as a young man and thought he’d like the city more outside of carnival. He returned at another time, and fell in love with it. While Barry has now spent decades living near the Mississippi River, he said the river is a topic that should interest all Americans. “It’s such a mythic force in American culture and our history that if you have the slightest interest in either, you have to be interested in the Mississippi River,” Barry said. Barry is passionate about coastal restoration and environmental causes. He served on both the Southeast Louisiana Flood Protection Authority-East and the Louisiana Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority. He said the state faces three major challenges: the technical problem, the money problem and the rising sea level problem. He said scientists can solve the technical problem and have made great strides in that regard. But he said Louisiana will need $85 billion more to implement the Coastal Master Plan entirely. Barry, who has written about a book on the Spanish Flu pandemic and several articles in both The New York Times and The Washington Post on COVID-19, said the current pandemic will leave governments even more cash-strapped. However, Barry, a former football coach, believes that just because the challenge is daunting doesn’t mean it’s impossible. “As a football coach, I don’t believe I ever went into a game if I didn’t think I was going to win it,” Barry said.” BY FRITZ ESKER

JENN GARNAND In the fight against COVID-19, nurses around the world have been on the front lines, selflessly risking their own health and care for others. This year, the Louisiana State Nurses Association chose to honor Jenn Garnand as its 2020 Louisiana Registered Nurse of the Year. Garnand decided to become a nurse shortly after Hurricane Katrina, when she suffered the miscarriage of her first child. “I remember feeling so vulnerable and defeated, but at the the same time looking up to these strong individuals who worked hard, advocated for me as their patient and quietly inspired me to change my life without even knowing the impact they were having at the time,” Garnand said. She graduated from the Charity School of Nursing in May of 2011. She has spent her entire career connected to emergency medicine in some capacity: staff nurse, charge nurse, preceptor, clinical educator, mentor, flight nurse, chief flight nurse and operations coordinator. She is about to start a new journey as the director of oncology at University Medical Center in New Orleans. Throughout her career in all of her different capacities, Garland has been driven by empathy for her patients. “You can always choose kindness,” Garnand said. “The fast-paced environment (in a hospital) can often lend to the mindless completion of tasks, but patients are human beings with real feelings and needs. The easiest thing we can do as a fellow human is greet them with a smile and a caring concern that eases their fears and insecurities in a vulnerable condition.” Garnand said 2020 has been a challenging year for nurses, but an enlightening one. “Witnessing the sheer resiliency of my colleagues has made me a better person and a better nurse,” Garnand said. “I will never forget the way nurses came together for each other and the world.” BY FRITZ ESKER

BATON ROUGE Baton Rouge , or the Capital City, owns some of the best riverfront property along the world’s third largest river, the Mississippi. Since 1984, Blake G. Arata Jr. has been representing injured individuals for personal injury and wrongful death involving railroad accidents, maritime personal injury, and severe truck and vehicular accidents. he world of soups includes everything from the precious and esoteric to the homey and comforting, from thin and intense consommés to thick and hearty concoctions that blur the boundary between soups and stews. I love them all, but my preference runs to the latter, particularly this time of year, when substantial, full-flavored food is what we all crave. With some good crusty bread, any of this month’s recipes can make a meal. Those of us who love to make soup have certain techniques and ingredients that we prefer, some mainstream, some quirky. As do many others, I use some type of stock in most soups. I like the flavor, body and savoriness that stock brings to a soup. There was a time
WA S H and roughly chop turnip greens. Combine greens, garlic and chicken stock in a large pot. Bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer, covered, until greens are tender, about 30 minutes. Puree with an immersion blender or, if using a standard blender, puree and return to the pot. Season to taste with salt, black pepper and cayenne. COO K orzo in salted, boiling water according to package directions until al dente. Drain and add to turnip greens. Adjust seasonings. Serve soup drizzled with olive oil and sprinkled with grated cheese. Makes 4 servings.
when I always made my own stock, but these days I mostly rely on a good commercial product, although if there’s a ham bone or turkey carcass in the house, I’m not going to let it go to waste. Soup recipes really lend themselves to substitution and experimentation. For example, the turnip greens and orzo soup could be made with another type of greens, such as mustard; vegetable or ham stock could replace the chicken stock, and another type of small pasta could take the place of orzo. The golden potato soup can be made with white potatoes, if that is what you have, although it will no longer be golden. Another type of winter squash can be substituted in the butternut squash soup. Split pea soup benefits from the addition of ham, but it’s not essential. Likewise, you don’t have to use smoked sausage in the lentil soup. Texture is another element that is mostly a matter of taste. Two of the recipes call for pureeing the soup; the others do not, but that is not written in stone. Any of these soups can be turned into a puree, if desired. Likewise, any of them can be served in a chunkier style. In that case, the vegetables should be cut smaller than specified in the recipes. For some ingredients (turnip greens, potatoes and butternut squash) I’ve given the amounts in pounds because of size variations. A bunch of turnip greens is not always the same and potatoes and butternut squash vary greatly in size. It took a butternut squash that weighed a little over three pounds to yield two pounds of squash for the soup. n

BUTTERNUT SQUASH SOUP WITH OR ANGE CRE AM
1½ pounds Gold potatoes 2 tablespoons butter 6 cups chicken stock 2 slices thick-cut bacon coarse salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste ¼ cup chopped scallions, green part only
2 pounds butternut squash, cubed or sliced 4 tablespoons butter 4 cups chicken stock coarse salt, white pepper and nutmeg to taste ½ cup heavy cream 1 teaspoon finely grated orange zest

Add split peas, stock, water and bay leaf. B R ING to a boil, then reduce heat, cover and simmer, stirring occasionally, until peas are tender, about 1 hour. Season to taste with salt and black pepper. Add cubed ham. Makes 6 to 8 servings.

Pour off rendered fat. Add onion and garlic and simmer until onion is softened, about 5 minutes. A DD lentils, chicken stock and water, bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer until lentils are tender, about 25-30 minutes. Stir in spinach and season to taste with salt and pepper. y mother always sewed my Mardi Gras costumes growing up, leaving room for turtlenecks and T-shirts should the weather turn cold. One never knows what Louisiana winters will bring. The weekend could prove warm and mild, our faces basking in spring sunshine as we face the parades, eager for our bounty, and then, like a petulant child jealous of our fun, a cold front could turn Tuesday into a festivity of misery.

Such was the case when I rode in the Krewe of Highland Parade in the Highland Historical District of Shreveport two years ago, shivering on the back of a convertible with hand warmers and layers of blankets. The night before showered tiny droplets of rain on Saturday’s Krewe of Gemini parade, but warm enough not to deter watchers from gathering their lot. What followed the night’s spring sprinkles was a brutal blast of winter’s wrath the following morning.
This year the Krewe of Highland celebrates its 26th anniversary. The status of the pandemic will of course determine how, and if, the krewe celebrates.

But that didn’t stop the residents of the historic Highland neighborhood from coming out to the three-mile parade. And it certainly didn’t curtail my throwing requirements. After all, it’s Mardi Gras. We have our duties to perform. This year presents new problems for the Krewe of Highland, one that usurps the weather. As of press time, founder and organizer Matthew Linn had no idea what the future held for the krewe’s quirky Friday night ball and Sunday parade due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. “We’re trying to make it happen with the city, but we want it to be safe,” he explained. “One thing about the Krewe of Highland is we can throw a party together quickly and we can do that for a parade as well.” Highland’s a laid-back group, Linn insisted, with members “with lives” who don’t meet regularly throughout the year. After the holidays, however, they bolt into action. Ideas for 2021 included a true masked ball, Linn said. Past Grand Bals — they partied at St. Mary Medical Center in 2020 with North Louisiana’s Ochsner CEO Chuck Daigle as grand marshall — required masks of all members who would remove them during the evening or fail to wear them in the first place. This lack of Carnival etiquette irritated Linn so this year he’s was happy to impose safety — and Carnival — standards on unmasked members, who would be escorted out. The parade plan was a reverse Sunday event, where floats park on a median in the middle of a street and participants drive up and down yelling for throws. Highland hires high school and college marching bands each year to parade but they would instead install them along the route to perform stationary. HUMBLE ORIGINS
Twenty-six years ago, after moving back home to Shreveport, Linn thought the Highland Historic District of Shreveport deserved a parade. So, he started one. Simple as that. The Highland Area Partnership agreed, a small budget was created and friends and family joined to help. The first parade rolled with about 30 attendees that included festive wagons, a party barge and a decorated lawnmower. Over the years, the route expanded to three miles with more than 100 entries, plus krewes within the Krewe sporting names like Krewe of BBQ, Krewe of Spam and the Blanc et Noir Marching Society, all throwing unusual throws, from hot dogs to rubber chickens. Last year’s parade garnered 140 floats to 11,000 eager parade-watchers. “Lots of luck and friends and family and people who show up,” Linn said of its success. “It took on a life of its own.” Unfortunately, life can be fickle, throwing harsh weather and COVID our way. And Mardi Gras must evolve with the changes. This year, the krewe’s 26th anniversary, participants will see more homemade, family-style floats Linn said. If it’s not canceled, of course. “I’m fine with that,” he said, adding that the public’s safety must take center stage. n

The Path of History Historic and charming Natchez, Mississippi is a dream stop for history buffs and nature lovers alike BY CHERÉ COEN

here’s so much on the horizon for Natchez this year. Dunleith, the historic plantation with its sprawling estate and cozy fine dining restaurant, opens this spring after a long renovation. The historic home built in 1885 was acquired by the J Collection hotels and resorts of New Orleans and will return in all its glory. But that’s not all the company is planning for 2021. “Filmmakers Tate Taylor and John Norris, known for their work on films like ‘The Help’ and ‘Ma,’ are putting their creative skills to use through a new outlet: hospitality,” said Carlyn Topkin, vice president of the Lou Hammond Group, who conducts public relations for Natchez. “The The Natchez team is taking over an old restauTrace, original rant space and railroad depot to section just include a new restaurant, amphinorth of Natchez, theater, a concrete bluff trail, a Mississippi brick patio and outdoor public restrooms and would incorporate the existing street side plaza. Visitors may take in black history sites such as the Forks of the Road Slave Market and the Museum of African American History and Culture, which honors the town’s African American contributions in art, foodways and culture. Natchez was established in 1716, when Europeans arrived to settle along the dramatic bluff above the river. Over time, the town has been influenced by the French, British and Spanish. Because it was a Southern port surrounded by plantations, numerous Africans were brought in as slaves; the Fork of the Road was once the second busiest slave trafficking marketplace in the Deep South. To learn about the city’s African American history, start at the Museum of African American History and Culture, then head over to the William Johnson House, home to a freeman of color and barber in pre-Civil War days who documented

his life in a rare journal for its time. The Proud to Take a Stand monument recognizes young civil rights activists, containing more than 400 names, including those forced into the Mississippi State Penitentiary at Parchman in October 1965. EAT
There are numerous great restaurants to choose from in Natchez but on a recent trip we landed in town on a Sunday afternoon, when most eateries are closed. Magnolia Grill served us no problem and we enjoyed one of the finest burgers in Mississippi. The Maytag Blue Cheese Samburger char-grills 8 ounces of ground beef and tops it with blue cheese and a secret seasoning. Magnolia Grill rests on the shores of the Mississippi River in Natchez’s “Under-the-Hill,” once a ruthless area for steamboat traffic beneath the bluff on which the city rests. Be sure to nab a table that fronts the river where sunsets are spectacular. STAY
In addition to Dunleith opening this spring, there are many — and we mean many — historic bed and breakfasts to choose from in this antebellum town. Hotels run the gamut, from chain hotels downtown and on U.S. Hwy. 61 to boutique establishments such as the Natchez Grand Hotel facing the Mississippi. s Hurricane Laura bore down on the southwestern Louisiana coast, Kendrick Johnson of Lafayette fielded a call that would change the pattern of his daily life for weeks — and ultimately help Calcasieu Parish take important first steps to recover from the devastating Category 4 hit. The 36-year-old Lake Charles native works for Nabors Offshore as a field safety coordinator on oil-and-gas platforms. Johnson’s skills would soon be put to a different use: coordinating donations and outside aid as a volunteer in the wake of Laura. Johnson said he became involved in relief efforts before the storm hit, helping a friend in New Orleans get donated money to Lake Charles residents struggling to cover evacuation expenses. The same friend contacted Johnson after the storm, knowing he could get further donations directly into the hands of those in need. Johnson remembers rushing into a Lafayette store for supplies, including thousands of dollars’ worth of infant formula, and heading to decimated Lake Charles. Thus began a regular trek for Johnson and his 59-year-old father, as each day they took a pickup loaded with food, water, cleaning supplies and other items from Lafayette to Lake Charles. They patched up the roof of Johnson’s parents’ home and surveyed the substantial damage to Johnson’s father’s two rental properties — and then got to work helping others. The father-son duo teamed with a small group of Johnson’s friends to set up a makeshift staging area at a restaurant — and quickly became a critical force in helping residents begin to rebuild their lives. The grassroots relief effort, dubbed Forever Calcasieu, was among the first to provide supplies and aid in Lake Charles, as larger groups had yet to arrive. “We couldn’t wait for government help or these big organizations,” Johnson said. In the meantime, Johnson was called back to work, but told his bosses he could not return to the rig with his family and hometown reeling from the storm. “My community needs help,” he said. The group played a central role in early stages of the area’s recovery, Johnson said. He and others

used their networks and social media to coordinate “18-wheeler after 18-wheeler” of supplies headed to the Lake Charles area. The group installed a lockbox on a storage area at the restaurant staging ground and gave the combination to volunteers so they could access tarps, chainsaws and other supplies. As of mid-October, the group had raised $42,000 to give help directly to those in need, he said. Johnson said he did not intend to volunteer for nearly a month straight, but the need was great. “We were like, ‘If we quit, who’s gonna help? There’s no one. There’s literally no one. All we have is us,’” he said. As the area continues to recover from hurricanes Laura and Delta, which followed a similar track, Johnson said he’s been impressed at how even those impacted by the storms want to help others. “A lot of people want to help the community but they’re dealing with their own storm effects,” he said, “That’s what struck me.” n
