EDITOR’S NOTE
SEASON OF CHANGE THIS TIME LAST YEAR,
my husband and I were planning Sunday drives and chicken and champagne picnics, in addition to any other form of safe entertainment we could cook up. The city was two months into pandemic lockdowns with no end in sight, everything had gone virtual and everyone was baking sourdough bread. Cut to a year later and, we’re vaccinated, New Orleans (along with the rest of the world) is loosening restrictions and instead of filling a picnic basket, I’m packing a suitcase for a trip to (finally) visit family and friends. Giddy up, y’all. Life is returning to some semblance of normal and it’s just in time for summer. At home, this of course means finally inviting loved ones back into our houses for parties — to celebrate every occassion or none at all — and as houseguests when they visit from far-flung locales. If you are anything like me, you’re thinking it’s time for a top to bottom deep clean, décor refresh and replace and repair assessment of items that got a lot more use over the past year due to us all being home so much. In the past that would seem daunting, but I’m relishing it and so many things, because they are symbols of the end of the pandemic. This issue of course has everything you need to know to get your home ready for prime time. That said, there are a few things I hope to see stick around once pre-pandemic life is restored. Sunday drives and chicken and champagne picnics top the list. Cheers!
IN MEMORIAM Pamela Marquis, a longtime contributor to New Orleans Homes, died unexpectedly on May 4. A devoted gardener, Pamela’s’ gardening column and other contributions to New Orleans Homes kept readers in the know not only with trends and tips, but also the expertise, advice and news of and about respected New Orleans and Louisiana leaders in gardening, landscape design, botany and agriculture. We loved working with Pamela and will miss her smart, funny, sweet missives and her contributions to the magazine. Pamela leaves behind a loving daughter and son in-law, Eve Crawford Peyton and Robert Peyton — both of whom are also contributors to Renaissance Publishing’s digital and print publications — and three beloved grandchildren. She dotted upon her family and our hearts go out to them as they navigate the loss of this strong and loving presence in their lives. We too will miss her presence in our lives and in the pages of New Orleans Homes.

Nascent Venture Hattie Collins launches interior decorating firm Hattie Collins, owner of the erstwhile Hattie Sparks boutique, recently forayed into the world of decorating. Though the boutique — which specialized in women’s clothing, unique jewelry and gift items, accent pieces and art — is now closed, it served as the perfect launch pad for this new venture. With a master’s degree in art history from Tulane University, Collins has long been fascinated with interiors. The ability to style or merchandise a room, and a keen eye for vintage and antique pieces, perfectly positions Collins in this new role. She also spent the last decade collaborating and building strong relationships with independent designers, craftsmen and artists — close connections that are invaluable for curating spaces that reflect relaxed-yet-refined style. Collins’ design philosophy centers around a fluidity to interior spaces where elements should be able to change without altering the room’s visual cohesion. Since inception, Hattie Sparks has been tapped for projects in Montana, Alabama, Florida, Texas, Washington, D.C and more. hattiesparks.com
TRAHAN ARCHITECTS MENTORS JAVIER CASTELLON Trahan Architects, a global architecture firm with offices in New Orleans and New York, and Son of a Saint, a nonprofit organization that exists to transform the lives of fatherless boys, have announced that Javier Castellon has joined the firm as a mentee of founder and CEO, Trey Trahan, and his entire staff. Castellon joined the firm in January and will be learning the ins and outs of architecture until he goes to college in the fall to study the field. GET ORGANIZED
MOUNT A large, blank wall near the pool is a handy place for storage. Gather outdoor-grade hooks with non-damaging adhesive on the back. Attach them to the wall and hang a cargo net on each of the hooks. Store floats, toys, pool noodles and more safely behind the net. Make sure it’s loose enough for easy access to fun pool accessories.
Curated Cabana Pool house prep for summer safety and fun Ah, the pool house. It gives swimmers a place to freshen up and enjoy a snack or drink. Plus, guests aren’t tramping through the house in dripping swimsuits. But with all of the use — toys, floats, pool equipment, wet towels and wetter swim suits — the pool space is often disorganized and potentially dangerous. Consider a few options keep gear organized for safety and to maximize lazy and playful pool days.
RINSE A pool house can be a shady lounge with a bar area or a full outdoor kitchen. But one of the most popular and useful things to have is a bathroom, and a beautiful shower can complement any pool house. This one is sleek and modern. If you are looking to create a relaxing staycation, an organized pool house can make any hot day feel like a summer getaway.

DRY Towel racks make poolside organization a breeze. This one blends effortlessly into outdoor or pool house décor and can handle multiple towels. Pro-tip: Hang a wine rack and place clean, dry rolled up towels where the wine bottles would go.

COVER STORE Fashionable and functional, a cabinet can be the one thing that keeps everything in its place. This teak cabinet can store dry towels, toys and more and will add high style to your pool house.
Keeping things casual and low maintenance can’t be done without a durable rug. A sisal rug is just the ticket. It’s composed of natural fibers and earth tones, making it perfect for wet feet and high traffic.
ARTIST PROFILE
NATE SHEAFFER NATE SHEAFFER BEGAN AN ART CAREER THAT HAS SPANNED
nearly 40 years by blowing glass while in college at the University of North Carolina. By the time he graduated in 1986 with a degree in German, working with glass had led to an enduring passion for neon and to Sheaffer’s first neon business. “When I started blowing glass ... I was drawn to the light,” says Sheaffer. “That fueled me to become a neon glass blower. Every inch of a neon sign is bent by a human being. I was drawn to the handmade nature of it.” Sheaffer’s experience includes crafting his own original sculpture, producing commercial signage and even manufacturing and wholesaling neon tubing. Along the way, he has collected hundreds of pieces of vintage neon, much of which he refurbishes and sells. While many of his early works were abstract, he describes his latest original pieces as “exotic” and “kinetic.” A work entitled “Light The Woods with Sound,” exhibited at a park in Raleigh, North Carolina, consisted of hundreds of vibrant neon coils programmed to original digital compositions and audience input via musical instruments. Locally, a smaller outdoor installation of 24 neon units was at the Lafitte Greenway last fall. Sheaffer patterned his current Raleigh studio on God’s Own Junk-

yard, a “kaleidoscopic” warehouse of neon north of London, and now the artist, who splits his time between Raleigh and New Orleans, has brought a similar environment — Big Sexy Neon — to the revitalized Oretha Castle Haley corridor. Colorful neon radiates through the windows across the front of the space (originally a five and dime, more recently the home of Zeitgeist Arts Center and now a hip destination with an industrial SoHo feel) that Sheaffer and partner Dianna Knost are busily completing for its spring opening. Inside the remodeled circa-1905 building that will serve as a gallery, rentable event venue and coffee shop, a glowing white neon piece against one wall announces “This Must Be The Place.” Knost’s curatorial eye and creative spirit, known from her former shop, A.K.A. Stella Gray, complements Sheaffer’s stable of work, which ranges from edgy to ethereal and the two have collaborated on multiple works. The coffee shop, La Vie En Rose, run by Kirby Jones and previously housed at the CAC, is intended to make the studio as much of a gathering place as an art space. — BY LEE CUTRONE Big Sexy Neon, nate@bigsexyneon.work

BRUNCH BUNCH
Melanie’s mellow (or not) Michelada
IN MAY, I HIT THE 10-MONTH MARK of a year-long alcohol-free challenge. (It’s going well, I don’t miss booze and I feel great, thanks for asking!) I like to celebrate these milestones with treats and rewards, including creating alcohol-free versions of my favorite cocktails. One that has become a staple of my repertoire, both because it is easy to make and because you can also often get one out at a bar or restaurant is a Michelada. If you aren’t familiar, think of it as a Bloody Mary made with Mexican lager instead of vodka. I absolutely love having a Bloody Mary or Michelada at brunch, so virgin versions have been a welcome option.
22 SUMMER 2021
There are of course as many variations for a Michelada as there are for its vodka-infused counterpart. I like to use Zing Zang Bloody Mary mix with my favorite non-alcoholic beer, because I love the taste. Also see: I am lazy. But you can go as simple as adding a splash of tomato juice and lime juice to your beer or as elaborate as mixing up your special, time-honed Bloody recipe. The world is your lime wedge! Rather than spending a lot of time on finding or developing a whizbang Bloody recipe, I focused my energy on garnishing it beyond what’s likely considered decent or sane because, snacks! Here’s my Michelada recipe in both non-alc and full proof versions. I recommend sipping it on the porch or patio, out by the pool or with breakfast or brunch. OK, really anywhere at any time is good. Oh, and I’ve offered an alternative to N/A beer if you aren’t a beer lover. Cheers! Goodness To-Go Perfect for picnics and potlucks, food blogger Timothy Pakron’s pasta salad is so tasty you’ll forget it’s vegan PRODUCED BY MARGARET ZAINEY ROUX
PICNIC PASTA SALAD WITH OREGANO DILL DRESSING Serves 6-8 Dressing 1 ½ cups vegan mayo ½ cup finely chopped fresh oregano ½ cup finely chopped fresh dill 3 tablespoons fresh lemon juice 2 tablespoons white wine vinegar 2 tablespoons nutritional yeast 1 garlic clove, minced ½ teaspoon sugar ½ teaspoon sea salt ½ teaspoon freshly cracked black pepper dash cayenne pepper
Salad 1 pound bowtie pasta 3 cups bite-size pieces broccolini (about one bunch) 2 cups bite-size pieces peeled carrots ½ cup frozen peas 1 small red bell pepper, chopped 1 large cucumber, peeled and chopped ½ cup diced red onion 2 cups cherry or grape tomatoes, halved ½ cup high-quality pitted green olives, sliced sea salt and freshly cracked black pepper chopped fresh oregano and dill, for garnish
1. In a bowl, whisk together mayo, oregano, dill, lemon juice, white wine vinegar, nutritional yeast, minced garlic, sugar, sea salt, black pepper and cayenne pepper. 2. Fill a large bowl with ice and a little water to make an ice bath for vegetables. This will shock them, lock in color, and retain crunch, while also cooling down the pasta for the dressing. 3. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add pasta and cook for about 7 minutes. Try a piece. When it feels close to being done, needing about one more minute, toss in broccolini, carrots and peas. Drain and transfer to ice bath. 4. Once cooled, transfer pasta and vegetables back to colander and drain thoroughly. Excess water will dilute dressing. 5. In a large bowl, toss dressing, drained pasta and vegetable mixture, bell pepper, cucumber, red onion, tomatoes and olives. Mix well. Season with salt and black pepper to taste. Garnish with fresh dill and oregano.
About the Chef Despite his Mississippi upbringing, New Orleans always felt like home to food blogger and recipe developer Timothy. Pakron. He moved permanently to New Orleans after publishing his first cookbook, “Mississippi Vegan,” and continues to adapt classic recipes and concoct new ones while serving as a full-time butterfly gardener. FOR THE GARDEN
ZEN AND NOW Robin Tanner’s projects remain steeped in art and push conceptual boundaries
LOCAL LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT ROBIN TANNER
doesn’t have a formal resume or a detailed curriculum vitae but his extraordinary work can be found throughout the city. Much of it beautifies the New Orleans Botanical Garden in City Park. “Robin Tanner’s landscape designs engage our visitors and allows them to appreciate his work as an art form,” says Paul Soniat, director of the gardens. “He sees his designs in its entirety not as pieces and parts, but as a whole landscape.” Tanner is acknowledged as an expert in Japanese-garden design and he was part of the team who designed the New Orleans Japanese Garden. He’s also responsible for the Helis Foundation Enrique Alférez Sculpture Garden and his most recent work is The Chapel of the Rain, a gift from The Garden Study Club of New Orleans. He’s also known for his many residential and commercial projects throughout the city. “I like to think what I do is landscape architecture,” he says. “I also approach the work as an art form and use plant material to put together the piece. I am not a decorator.” Tanner loves being outside keeping beautiful landscapes beautiful and aspiring to make other spaces beautiful too.
26 SUMMER 2021
1 Always determine how the space will be used. If you are going to use the space for sitting and relaxing, then plant a good shade tree.
2 Next, you want to think about the organization of the space and let the design express itself through the space.
3 Finally, use plant material that works for our environment and climate. And keep in mind planting plants in the right sunlight.
His major influences come from Mirei Shigemori, who had a major impact on the development of Japanese landscape architecture in the 20th century and Lancelot “Capability “ Brown, the foremost English master of garden design, whose works were characterized by their natural, unplanned appearance. Tanner is currently working on a project for the Tasmania-based Museum of Old and New Art in the 9th Ward. It is a community center with programs in fashion, music, culinary arts and gardening. “It’s a fantastic school and an interesting project,” he says. A potential dream project in his future is a site that would involve a cave. “It would be conceptual,” he says. “It would be like a Japanese stroll garden with connecting pathways allowing you to discover a new garden scene at each turn. Or maybe it would be more like a labyrinth and it would culminate in a bench in the back of the cave so instead of a medieval labyrinth where at the end you would find God, here you’d end in the earth and find whatever mystery is there.” – BY PAMELA MARQUIS

HOME GROWN
Garlic
A timeless and medicinal flavoring BY PAMELA MARQUIS
1 USE Cultivated for the distinct flavor of its bulb, garlic is a robust and frequently used ingredient in almost everyone’s kitchen. Additionally, it has many medicinal applications, especially for regulating blood pressure.
2 LEARN Garlic is in the same family as onions, chives, shallots and leeks. It is one of the oldest food flavorings. Archaeological records show that garlic was used even in Neolithic times.
3 GROW To grow successfully, be sure to add a lot of organic matter, such as compost or well-aged manure, to your soil. Separate the garlic bulb into individual cloves. Then plant the cloves about an inch deep. The fatter end should be at the bottom of the hole. Your garlic is ready to harvest once their leaves turn brown.
4 ROAST Roasting garlic is one of the most delicious ways to enjoy it. This process mellows the pungency of the bulb and releases natural sugars, giving it a rich caramel flavour.
5 LAGNIAPPE But don’t forget about garlic scapes — the first tender green shoots. Scapes add a delicate garlic flavor to salads, soups and sauces. Once you’ve tried these delicacies, they will become a favorite addition to your culinary arsenal.

BRIGHT IDEAS
classical, to Victorian architecture, to bungalows, and finally to midcentury modern. I grew up in a midcentury home that my parents built. In the beginning, we didn’t have air conditioning, so from a young age I was comfortable using fans and the porch to beat the heat. Shutters were included on most of New Orleans’s earliest homes. They were solid or louvered shutters of great quality and style. They also served as built-in hurricane protection, and still do. As Hurricane Katrina approached, we closed our shutters to protect us from the storm. Closing the shutters is a wonderful (and free) way to provide shade and coolness. Plus, you can paint shutters in myriad hues to add a festive, fun pop of color to your home. My shutters were inspired by a trip to Cuba, where I discovered the most impeccable shade of sky blue. Ceiling fans are used for circulation. With the advent of electricity, many homeowners invested in ceiling fans, which arrived in the late 19th century. Transom windows over doors were also used to further ventilate rooms. Today, the iconic Southern fans and transom windows are still used for moving stale air and providing a light wind. I’ve never bought a new fan, but for those who prefer new, I advocate a four-blade Hunter fan, which lasts forever. I always am sure to invest in vintage fans. Historic ceiling fans come in a variety of colors and are great quality. Usually I opt for a flat black fan with wood blades, though I also invested in a cerulean blue fan with a yellow stripe on each blade.
STAYING COOL Peter Patout reveals what we can learn from historic homes DENIZEN OF THE FRENCH QUARTER, PETER PATOUT KNOWS classical Southern homes. As both an architecture historian and licensed historic property realtor, Patout says there’s much to be gleaned from the structures of old New Orleans houses. Going back to the early roots of the city, new inhabitants embraced design elements that were beautiful and practical; that embraced gracious living while cooling down the house. With summer upon us, Patout shares here how historic home design can inspire us, particularly in staying cool during the sizzling summer months.
New Orleans homes of the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries were designed in response to climate. The earliest vernacular homes were designed in what became known as French Creole Louisiana architecture. Then, it evolved into neo-
30 SUMMER 2021
Balconies and porches add charm, while serving as wonderful places to visit and catch a breeze off of the Mississippi. European immigrants first built homes sans balconies and porches, but quickly learned that the weather was a challenge. They added balconies and porches to the early architecture of the area, providing eyebrows for the homes so the sun doesn’t hit the main part of the houses. Balconies and porches also provide outdoor rooms for sleeping and entertaining al fresco. This tradition has carried on in some fashion throughout our time. Plant aromatic gardens filled with confederate jasmine and antique roses. In the 18th and 19th centuries, they would consciously plant big gardens to combat foul odors. Settlers brought gorgeous flowers indigenous to Asia and Europe, such as Souvenir de la Malmaison roses, and planted them in Creole gardens. With the humidity, malodorous smells can still waft through our neighborhoods. I suggest planting roses, jasmine and gardenia because they’re romantic and nostalgic. Predestined Jennifer and Lee McMillan celebrate their Art Deco dream home on Audubon Boulevard
BY EVA FEDDERLY
F
Right: In the living room, Eclectic Homes suggested a high gloss emerald green paint for the ceiling to compliment the reupholstered Louis the XVI arm chairs and the yellow and blue wallpaper with chimerical blossoms. “I never would have thought to do that, it’s such a showstopper. The dark green color, ties it all together,” Jennifer McMillan said.
PHOTOGRAPHY BY SARA ESSEX BRADLEY
rom the beginning, it was meant to be. Jennifer Farris flew home from her New York City apartment for some New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival jams and jubilee. During the visit, her friend Ansley Marshall introduced Jennifer to her future husband, Lee McMillan III. “Two weeks later, we ended up walking down the aisle together,” Jennifer laughed, noting that they were serendipitously in the same wedding party. “I was good friends with the bride and he was friends with the groom.” Jennifer and Lee McMillan got hitched, moved to Manhattan’s Upper East Side, and had two beautiful children, daughter Randall, 9, and son John, 5. In 2019, the family of four moved back to New Orleans. During the height of the pandemic, the McMillans wanted to buy a home. They were floating between long-term Airbnb rentals and needed to feel settled. They also wanted the perfect nest. The McMillans’ friend who had played Cupid at JazzFest, became the family’s real estate agent. “She gave us each other and our dream house,” Jennifer said. In June 2020, Marshall discovered a blighted Art Deco property built in 1920 behind Tulane University. Originally built with red brick, the previous owner and developer had wrapped the home in white stucco, and maintained the original iron work and windows. “The home was basically just a shell,” Jennifer remembered. “But it had its original marble fireplace and an exquisite pool with hand painted Israe-
li tiles. The backyard felt like walking into hotel in Palm Springs. It was us.” Jennifer, a third generation New Orleanian, grew up around midcentury modern antiques, her mother Patti Farris’ favorite. Lee, whose family has also lived in New Orleans for multiple generations, was raised in the company of English and French antiques in the family’s Uptown home. “Our travels and places we lived and grew up shaped how we wanted our new home to feel,” Jennifer says. “Because of our life in New York, Tokyo, and our travels, we gravitate towards modern architecture and floor plans, things that are more unusual.” With the family’s eclectic mix of midcentury modern furniture, Murano glass and vintage finds from Palm Beach staple Circa Who, Jennifer turned to Eclectic Home’s mom-daughter design duo to freshen up her family’s new home. Jennifer’s mother has long been a patron of Eclectic Home and Jennifer had already purchased a handful of furniture pieces from the Oak Street showroom. It was a no-brainer. In June 2020, Eclectic Home designers Penny Francis and daughter Casi St. Julian launched the McMillans’ project. The designers took care to edit the family’s heirlooms and pieces they picked up along their travels. “Some items did not make the cut, others were repurposed or refinished,” Francis said. They recovered several antique and midcentury chairs and paired them with new custom upholstery with bold prints and rich hues. And Francis challenged Jennifer to embrace color and bold design. “Every home I’ve done has always been grey or taupe. Everything is always subdued,” Jennifer said. “When I started working with Penny, I
told her to push me out of comfort zone.” When entering the home on Audubon Boulevard, an original terrazzo staircase greets guests upon arrival. The home is atypical in that the mother-in-law suite rests on the first floor, accompanied by the family room, a playroom, laundry and gym. A casual dining room and bar lead out onto the pool area, equipped with navy-and-white-striped umbrellas and bright white chaise lounge chairs accompanied by a slide-out cocktail table, perfect for a cool glass of afternoon rosé. The second floor of the McMillan home is dedicated to more formal entertaining. The living room boasts a pair of Louis XVI armchairs, which Eclectic Home reupholstered. They used a rich cerulean ZAK+FOX fabric from the Fantasma collection on the back of the chairs and a green cotIn the McMillans’ formal living room, the couple chose their chandelier, sofa, and throw pillows from Eclectic Home and sconces from Jade NOLA. They went vintage when choosing their coffee table and art. A butler’s pantry also features luscious leafy green wallpaper from Cole & Sons through Eclectic Home. A vintage chair and an antique art work stand in the hallway. “It feels authentic to who we are,” Jennifer said.
The family congregates at the large kitchen island with custom-made barstools from Eclectic Home. The local design is balanced with vintage art they picked up while living in Japan. The three light fixtures are Kelly Wearstler through Ferguson Showroom. “We have the best of all of these worlds in one Art Deco home,” Jennifer McMillan said.

“My favorite room is the bedroom,” Jennifer said. “The contrasting wallpaper matches the drapery… and there’s a beautiful soaking tub in our ensuite bathroom.” The couple opted to buy local with their leafy pale yellow wallpaper prints from Jade NOLA, as well as their Eclectic Home Art Deco-style light fixture, grey chaise lounge, and bedside table. The linens are John Robshaw. A clawfoot soaking tub stands in the master bath with a colorful Slim Aarons print and vintage Murano glass chandelier from Palm Beach staple Circa Who overhead. In the powder room, the McMillans opted for Cole & Sons wallpaper and a custom-made sink, both from Eclectic Home.
Facing page: Jennifer opted for a classic navy blue and white theme at the pool, which reminds the family of a Palm Beach hotel. The downstairs kitchenette that leads out onto the pool, includes appliances from Ferguson Showroom, a West Elm table and chairs, and custom cabinetry from local H&A Cabinetry. On the third floor of the home is daughter Randall’s bedroom. Some of the best features are the two whimsical hanging chairs from Serena & Lily. “We carved out a reading area with ceiling-suspended woven chairs, as well as a desk for studying. The end walls of the room feature an amazing wallcovering by Thibaut that inspired the entire color palette. The end result is a happy, layered space,” said Penny Francis of Eclectic Home. ton velvet fabric for the seats. To add high drama, the team painted the ceiling a high-gloss dark emerald shade, which highlights the wallpaper with chimerical blossoms. Also included is Jennifer’s mother’s midcentury club chairs in a whitewashed frame with a button back. “Neighbors see this room from the street. They tell me they love my wallpaper.” Jennifer said. Also on the second floor is their son John’s room and the master suite. The master suite is Jennifer’s favorite room in the house. “The contrasting wallpaper matches the drapery. There’s a beautiful soaking tub in our ensuite bathroom,” Jennifer said. The bathroom also has a Slim Aarons photo and a Murano chandelier Jennifer bought while visiting Palm Beach. “It feels like an escape, like a beautiful hotel room.” The McMillans’ daughter reigns over the third floor, a long and narrow attic space anchored with stairs in the middle. It’s one of the most magical rooms in the house. Floating in the center is a custom-made little girl’s bed, which they’ve dubbed “Lady Fingers.” Deep dormer windows allow light to flood the bedroom. The window spaces are accented with
hand-painted pink scalloped trim. “On the other side of the space, we carved out a reading area with ceiling-suspended woven chairs as well as a desk for studying,” Francis said. “The end walls of the rooms feature an amazing wallcovering by Thibaut that inspired the entire color palette. The end result is a happy, layered space.” The designer said the McMillans were involved in the design process every step of the way. Francis added, “They trusted us and the process and we delivered what we believe is a true reflection of their personalities and how they live.” On Christmas Eve 2020, the McMillan dream home was ready. “We hosted Christmas Eve for my whole family,” said Jennifer, who’s the oldest of six girls. Her mother had wanted to host the previous year, but Jennifer said it didn’t feel right. “Now we have a family tradition,” Jennifer said. “And everyone ended up in the pool and hot tub. It was perfect. It was just meant to be.”

NOWHERE TO GO BUT UP Shelly Pecot’s elevated pool and deck blend modernist design, creative engineering and contemporary art By Lee Cutrone Photography by Sara Essex Bradley
W
hen Shelly Pecot bought her Uptown house four years ago, she knew she wanted to add a pool and outdoor living space, but she didn’t want to lose the much-needed and well-utilized parking area that occupied most of the space behind the house. Pecot and her two daughters, both of whom live in New Orleans, gather often and love to entertain so there are often multiple cars. Working with architect Tracie Ashe, partner of studioWTA, and Will Erickson of Yazoo Restorations, Pecot found the answer in “high design.” “One of the most important parts of the project was creating an outdoor living space; it really needed to be connected to the living area, so a raised design was the most appropriate,” says Ashe. “It would meet all of their goals.” The solution suited Pecot and the house. Having lived in Asia for 20 years, she was used to living in high rise environments and the circa 1920 craftsman-style house had already gone through an update with modern elements. The family room and kitchen were renovated a year before Pecot bought the house. “The house starts traditional and becomes modern in the family room and kitchen,” says Pecot, who splits her time between New Orleans and Colorado. “It was an easy transition to keep that going to the pool area. We wanted it to feel cohesive. There is so much art in the home. We also wanted to carry that outside.” The Spanish cedar deck includes a pergola that provides dappled shade, atmospheric globe pendants, sleek concrete walls, a dining area, a minimalist fountain, and hidden LED lighting. Four painterly Op-Art style aluminum sculptures by Pard Morrison (installed on bespoke shelves), from Arthur Roger Gallery, as well as a contemporary figural sculpture by George Dunbar, are mounted above the rear of the pool. The design also incorporates a nod to the house’s 1920s origins: navy blue, Art Deco fan-patterned tiles surface the bottom of the shallow tanning ledge at one end of the pool. Because the engineering was as important as the look of the proj-

ect, getting the design right would take time and patience. According to Erickson, the better part of a year was spent on planning alone. “A lot of the plan is not typical of residential stuff,” says Erickson. “It’s more commercial. The best description I can think of is a boutique hotel swimming pool.” Thirty-foot pilings and geofoam, a material used in highways, provide a stable foundation for the pool and a host of creative details — from a grout-free deck surface that allows for drainage to a
water-cooling element that counters the effects of the pool’s full sun exposure — were worked into the final plan. A commercial company was hired to pour the concrete. Shelly’s vision of an oasis also meant that the design would incorporate a multitude of indoor and outdoor amenities. and a pizza oven. Nearby, is a slender pool shower. The project was completed in October of 2020 and has been a welcome addition for the entire family during the many at-home days of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. “I love the kitchen,” says Pecot, who enjoys cooking. “The pizza oven is my favorite thing I own, I think. It’s been perfect during COVID. The pool is heated and cooled, so we were swimming in December. And there’s a chiller because so much sun hits the pool. I wanted a nice crisp feel in summer. And there’s an outdoor weatherproof TV for Saints games and other fun things.”

Below the deck on the ground level accessed by a spiral staircase are a cabana bathroom and the most surprising feature of all, an aquarium-style window with a mermaid’s eye view of the pool, on one wall of the carport. The existing covered parking area, which now doubles as another hangout spot, was finished with corrugated perforated metal and tape lighting. “Because of the nature of the construction, it was a substantial project to do for a pool and an outdoor living space,” says Ashe. “The gravity of the project merited that extra attention to detail.” “It was complicated to build,” adds Pecot. “But it was well worth it.”

Down to Details A River Ridge home that reflects the personality of its owners at every turn By Misty Milioto Photography by Sara Essex Bradley

A
newly remodeled, 12,300-square-foot home in River Ridge not only exemplifies the New Orleans aesthetic, but it also showcases the homeowners’ travels with acute attention to detail. “This home really shouts unique creativity and complete originality,” says Nicole Ruppel Jones, kitchen and bath designer and remodeler at Legends Interiors. “Just like the streets of New Orleans, every room you enter tells a different story. From glass sculptures to ceramics to canvas art, local artists have a place to showcase their best. New Orleans is vibrant and alive. When entering this home, you are immediately introduced to layers of colors and textures that keep your eyes wanting more.” Jones, who is originally from River Ridge and has been an interior designer for 16 years, first began working on this home 10 years ago — after Hurricane Katrina — with her then co-worker and owner of Interiors & Extras, Nancy Hirsch Lassen. From there, she continued to work with the homeowners to bring their vision to fruition. That vision included blending different styles to have a cohesive look. “We achieved this by creating a comfortable and welcoming space with interesting features, and blending contemporary aspects with warm and fuzzy accents,” Jones says. “It really is the best of both worlds. The home is filled with unique accessories and art that are due to spark up any conversation. Throughout the space you will find evidence of their travels, interesting fabrics, exotic stones, mixed metals, colorful custom rugs, unique light fixtures and so much more.” The main house, which includes five bedrooms, five full baths, one powder room, a theater room, a workout room and a study — and the pool house, which has a two bedrooms, two full baths, a full kitchen, a living room and dining room — have intricate features throughout. Jones was instrumental in choosing everything from the jewel-toned color palette to the fabrics and building materials. Some of the standout materials include an Enchanted Tree copper foyer chandelier from South Africa, an amethyst slab stone inlay in the French white oak floors and a custom back-slanted marble sink in one of the powder rooms. Other special finishes include Connemara green marble countertops, Alexandrita quartzite countertops, a custom maple staircase with Jacobean stain and champagne-gold spindles, and an antique mirrored wall with finials in the dining room. Jones also sourced silk and capiz shell custom drapery with lucite hardware, a 10-foot solid walnut dining table, a metal sculpture table base for the breakfast area and metallic rattan chairs for the dining room. In addition, Jones designed several custom pieces for the home. MYNEWORLEANS.COM

These items include a leopard print bench in the breakfast area, a green marble sink in one of the powder rooms and bird-motif ottomans. When Jones first approaches a design project, she typically starts with an inspiration piece. Whether it is a homeowner’s favorite Moroccan vase from their travels or a wall-covering pattern, the inspiration piece starts the conversation. Jones then spends time getting to know her clients, their life routines and how they use their home. From there, she can gauge the scope of the work. “These clients are well traveled and live life to the fullest,” she says. “I think their home is a representation of all they have soaked in along the way.” A self-described color and texture girl with a design style that borders on Bohemian with a touch of moody glam, Jones took inspiration from different pieces throughout the home. For example, she designed the dining room around a buffet piece from Spain with a metallic fuchsia paint finish dressed up with satin brass. Her design aesthetic shines through with playful color splashes at every turn, yet

the home remains sophisticated where needed. “The inspiration in this home is endless,” Jones says. “It really is a designer’s dream to be able to work in [it].” A designer’s dream it may be, but that’s not to say that she didn’t encounter challenges along the way. “You never know what you will really be presented with until you start taking things apart,” Jones says. “I would have to say that the kitchen was probably the biggest challenge. We needed a focal point, more wall space and an open concept leading into the living room.” In order to achieve these goals, the renovation team flipped the kitchen by closing in three exterior windows to allow for ample wall space and storage, and busting through the concrete slab to reroute the gas and water lines to different locations. The focal point became the showstopper waterfall-edge Alexandrita quartzite countertops. “This stone has swirls and rivers of turquoise, brassy oranges, soft shades of green, dusty rose and so much more,” Jones says. “We pulled in all the other colors from this slab of stone. We also sourced a Galley 48-inch custom workstation sink for ultimate functionality, accompanied by high-end appliances [Wolfe, Miele and Sharp], custom lighting, designer fabrics, a custom brushed-copper hood and handmade raku backsplash tile.” Meanwhile, the expansive outdoor space came to life with the help of oversized copper gas fire pits, broken turquoise glass and custom Barcode glass tile from Canada. The outdoor furniture came from Janus et Cie, Dedon and The Phillips Collection, while a rug by Liora Manné finishes the space. MYNEWORLEANS.COM

WHY USE THE BBB?
W
hen you need work done on your home, there’s a lot on your mind. It’s a costly venture inside your house (an already expensive endeavor), so you likely feel a strong pressure to get it right. Hiring the wrong contractor can lead to financial and emotional hassle. But many of us are not home repair experts. It helps to have a resource to use like the Better Business Bureau. The BBB measures businesses by what it calls its Standards for Trust. These eight principles include the following: build trust, advertise honestly, tell the truth, be transparent, honor promises, be responsive, safeguard privacy and embody integrity. For a business to receive accreditation from the BBB, they must maintain a good public track record and a B or better rating. If businesses do not uphold their commitment to these standards, their accreditation is revoked. “[Accredited businesses] have a positive track record and made a commitment to high ethical standards of doing business. They recognize the necessity of trust and self-regulation to build our economy,” said Michael Cook, president and CEO of the BBB serving Southeast Louisiana. For consumers looking to use the BBB, their first step should be to visit bbb.org. There, they can find information on accredited and non-accredited businesses alike. There will be a BBB rating, complaint history and customer reviews. The Get a Quote function allows users to quickly and easily contact multiple accredited businesses at once. “When applicable, get everything in writing, check references, get multiple price quotes, and verify licenses and insurance,” said Cook. Cook said the BBB provides a fuller picture for customers than other consumer review websites. If one person had a bad experience with the company, that quote can be front and center on some sites even if it is not indicative of the business’ overall body of work. “Many times, the information is one-sided without the businesses giving their side or a remedy,” Cook said. “People trust the BBB because the information it provides is substantiated, objective and local.” The latter point has always been important to the BBB’s mission for its 100 plus years of existence. Their goal is not to serve as an advocate for businesses or consumers, said Cook, but to be neutral, “a mutually respected intermediary to promote trustworthy business practices, resolve disputes, and provide information to assist consumers in making wise buying decisions.” – BY FRITZ ESKER

HOME RENEWAL
LANDSCAPING 101 A crash course on keeping your lawn and garden in tip top shape year round
WHEN YOU OWN A HOME, YOUR LAWN AND
yard are your responsibility. If you don’t think to take care of these spaces, it won’t get done. Most people remember to do things like mow lawns because it’s an obvious task. If you look out the window and see shin-high grass, anyone will know you need to cut the lawn. But some issues are more subtle and might avoid casual notice. What are some of the things that slip past homeowners? “The biggest thing people forget to do is add fertilizer,” said Josh Caldcleugh, account manager for Mullin, a company that provides landscape architecture services. Why is fertilizer so important? Lawns and plants need healthy soil to survive. Soil will lose important nutrients as time goes by, so you need to replace those nutrients. Fertilizer is the best way to do that. Think of your fertilizer as equally important to your lawns and plants as sunshine and water. Caldcleugh recommended adding fertilizer to grass at the beginning of spring and near the end of fall. Re-mulching should also be done twice a year (Caldcleugh recommended doing it at the beginning of spring and the beginning of winter). It helps keep the soil moist and slow down weed growth. Slowing down weed growth will save you the time and physical

toil of needing to yank them out yourself. In local neighborhoods like Uptown and the Garden District, there are lots of large trees to provide ample shade. While this makes the neighborhood look good and keeps people cooler during the lengthy, sweltering New Orleans summers, it can make growing grass under all that shade a challenge. Caldcleugh suggested finding specific types of grass that thrive in the shade like monkey grass (a.k.a. liriope) or Asian jasmine. It’s also a good idea to cut back plants as they grow. Pruning improves a plant’s overall health by allowing more light and air to circulate within the plant. However, if you prune at the wrong time, you might damage the plant. Not all plants and situations are equal, so if you have questions about specific plants, talk to an expert at a local plant store or in the garden section of a Home Depot. This is also true of fertilizer as different plants and shrubs may have different needs. To give a few examples, it is best to prune azaleas within three weeks of their blooming time in the spring. Camellias are best to prune in the spring once you feel the threat of a freeze has passed (in New Orleans, the onset of spring weather can vary some from year to year). – BY FRITZ ESKER
LANDSCAPING TOOLS EVERY HOMEOWNER SHOULD HAVE So you’re ready to do some gardening and landscaping at home. What do you need to accomplish your goals as easily as possible? Caldcleugh shared his thoughts on what tools homeowners will want to keep handy for their yards and gardens. Spade - It’s great for digging and transplanting larger plants, plus it works well at creating garden bed and lawn edges, trenching and dividing shrubs. Gloves - Protect your hands from cuts, scrapes, splinters, blisters, callouses and dirt while you work with a sturdy pair of work gloves. “A full day of gardening can really do a number on your bare hands,” Caldcleugh said. Garden Hoe - This versatile tool is great for cultivating soil. It’s useful for prepping beds for new plantings and excellent at removing weeds from beds. Hand Shears/Loppers - These can be used for trimming, shaping and removing dead growth from plants and shrubs. Loppers are especially useful for larger branches. Hand Trowel - This tool is essential for planting, transplanting and potting small plants.

ASK THE EXPERTS
Villi Vici
NEW LIFE Color, shape and texture are back in a big way and here’s how the pros are using it THE HOME DESIGN AND DÉCOR INDUSTRIES ARE GETTING
a lot of attention this year as homeowners — having experienced an all new way of life — are more interested in the colors, shapes and textures that they see and feel more often than ever. With the arrival of summer, another seasonal shift brings new looks and new life to different areas of the home, both indoor and outdoor. Over the last year, the monotony of home, exacerbated by monotone walls and neutral palettes, has made homeowners weary of the same old same old. Experts this season emphasize that whites and neutrals are out, and color is in in a big way. “Color is back, and I am so happy for it,” says Nicole Ruppel Jones, interior designer at Legend Interiors. “Tropical patterned fabrics are very in, along with bright, bold colors, modern geometrics and animal prints. Yellows, greens, corals and pinks were noted by several designers as the trending colors this season. Abstract artist Abigail Reller is seeing more demand for bold color in art as people are gradually branching out from soft French blue, white, and gold commissions. Reller has begun introducing neon into her work and is loving the results. “Clients are wanting to step outside of their comfort zones and incorporate lively art,” she says. “My recommendation is to combine earth tones with pops of fluorescent or neon colors — I’m loving that this sum-

mer and can’t get enough.” For people on the fence about incorporating bright colors, she recommends easing into it with bright picture frames, candles or small art pieces. As a designer, Jones is seeing homeowners incorporate color by using their plants, and succulents are a popular choice. “Plants are in fact their own art little art pieces,” she says. “All green gardens have become super interesting — you can layer lime greens, evergreens, and Kelly greens to create a tailored look that has a little oomph.” Designer Grace Kaynor, who co-owns home furnishings store Sotre, agrees that using house plants indoors is both important for design and to cleanse the air. “I am doing a lot of living walls these days and even incorporating them into traditional décor, mixing them with antiques,” she says. Dried plants are also trending, according to Kaynor, with rattan and raffia making a big comeback in furniture, complementing the reemergence of jewel and earth tones. In addition to rattan and raffia, wicker is returning as a popular material for both indoor and outdoor furniture, according to Nina Borrouso, owner of Furnish. She comments that the rustic farmhouse look is starting to fade as consumers begin looking for quality workmanship over the unfinished or repurposed styles that the rustic farmhouse look is known for. With fabrics and upholstery, adding texture and warmth are key for
Vikki Leftwich, interior designer and owner of Villa Vici. She notes more homeowners turning the home into a place to entertain family and friends, a lasting effect of the last year’s events. “After a year of being in our homes, our clients are wanting to bring the outdoors in and the indoors out,” she says. “Performance fabrics are indispensable on upholstery and we are seeing luxurious, durable fabrics produced by all of our vendors for indoor and outdoor use.” Summer puts an emphasis on the outdoors, which has been a respite for solitude and for gathering for many homeowners over the last year. Your outdoor space should be an extension of your interior living space and maintain the same level of comfort and luxury, according to Leftwich. “We use a lot of modular seating in outdoor spaces,” she says. “A loungy sectional can be reconfigured to create an intimate seating space for cocktails. Teak and woven rope create beautiful frames for plush cushions upholstered in performance fabrics adding sophistication and style to outdoor seating.” Penny Francis, principal designer and owner of Eclectic Home says to think about the outdoors the same way you do the indoors. She recommends carving out space wherever you have it for dining, entertaining and relaxing. Whether you’re by a glistening pool or merely in the corner of the garden, a carefully considered exterior space can transport you along with a good book and a glass of wine or the company of a loved one. According to our experts, the outdoors is no place to skimp on comfort — make sure you acquire outdoor furnishings that won’t send you back indoors and to the sofa. Another tip for the outdoors is to explore new looks and environments that interest you. A client of Grace Kaynor recently had the idea of bring-
ing Japanese and Asian elements into her outdoor space by creating a Japanese garden. Global inspiration works for both the outdoors and indoors — Penny Francis likes to add decorative items that reflect a client’s travels. She also enjoys a nod to nostalgia, mixing rustic with vintage for an evolved look. “Adding a few new pieces to the mix of vintage has a luxurious appeal,” she says. SEASONAL DÉCOR MUST-DOS
We asked each of our experts for at least one must-do when it comes to freshening up your décor, tips that don’t require a heavy-handed approach but deliver impactful results. Here’s how they responded. For Penny Francis, fresh flowers and plants are a must, and a fresh coat of paint adds wonders to a space while layered lighting creates various moods. Grace Kaynor recommends freshening up your bed with a new coverlet and shams as a consistent spirit lifter. She also recommends a decorative candle for brightening the mood. According to Nina Borrouso, a couple of under-attended spaces are the coffee table and bookshelves — these are easy places to rearrange or change out items. Nicole Ruppel Jones says to add a touch of white to your color palette to freshen up a space immediately. Another fun tip is to refocus your focal point by rearranging furniture and accessories. For their must-do, Vikki Leftwich and Abigail Reller share a penchant for art, which adds personality and interest to a room while awarding a free pass to be bold. - BY KELCY WILBURN
