PRESIDENT’S LETTER

Greetings! On behalf of the Press Club of New Orleans, I want to welcome you all to our 58th Annual Excellence in Journalism Awards Gala. Kevin Mumphrey is a producer, videographer and editor at Channel 13, St. Tammany Parish Public School System’s educational television channel. For more than 17 years, Mumphrey worked at WGNO-TV as a news photographer, leaving for a three-year stint in Chicago with the sports department at CLTV, Chicago’s 24-hour news station. He has served on the Press Club of New Orleans board of directors since 2009 and as President of the club for the past three years.

As I complete my third and final term as president, I am proud of our many great achievements. We have a new website, new logo and we’ve updated to a manageable membership database system. We’ve enhanced our social media presence, including the Press Club Facebook and Twitter. And lastly, our constantly growing membership, along with maintaining our current members and the recordshattering number of entries into this year’s awards contest, are just a few goals that I am delighted we’ve reached. Without our hardworking board members, none of this would be possible. In the past three years, our fundraising efforts have taken a major step forward. We are, once again, awarding two $2,500 scholarships to college students interested in the Mass Communications fields of Journalism, Broadcasting

and Public Relations. And our goal should be to increase this going forward. As I hand over the gavel to our next president, Doug Mouton of WWLTV, I am confident that he will continue to guide this organization in the right direction – bringing in innovative ideas and planning new events for our members to enjoy. Congratulations to all finalists and winners tonight, as well as the Lifetime Achievement recipients and the scholarship winners. Thank you for your continued support and participation in the Press Club of New Orleans as I close out my time served as president. I’ll still be around and hope to see you at future events! All the Best, Kevin Mumphrey President, Press Club of New Orleans 2013-16

ABOUT US

Like us on Facebook at facebook.com/pressclubnola and follow us on Twitter at @PressClubNOLA. Please use #nolapressclubawards to discuss tonight’s event.

In 1957, nearly 100 journalists and public relations professionals gathered in modest quarters in the 200 block of Camp Street to organize the Press Club of New Orleans. The goal of the group was to promote and improve the field of journalism and its related professions through professional development.

We meet to help our colleagues in communications keep up with the latest inside information. Our goal is to ensure members reach their career potential through professional development, and to simply enjoy good times with peers. These are just a few of the reasons to join The Press Club of New Orleans.

Today, Press Club activities include the professional, the educational and the social. The club’s 300-plus members represent every level of their fields.

MASTER OF CEREMONIES

Zach Strief New Orleans Saints Offensive Tackle

Zach Strief is entering his 11th season in the NFL, all of which he has spent with the New Orleans Saints. He was a key member of the 2009 Super Bowl Championship team, and has served as a team captain for the past four years. In addition, he’s the Saints representative to the NFL’s Players Association.

Strief was an honor student and a three-sport star at Milford High School, in suburban Cincinnati. Strief is still active in Milford, organizing and running youth camps through his Big Dream Foundation. He’s the second player in Milford history to have his jersey number retired.

Since coming to New Orleans a decade ago, Zach Strief has been extremely involved in the New Orleans community, taking part in a wide variety of charitable events.

Strief graduated with a degree in communication studies and sociology from Northwestern University in Chicago, where he was also a two-time All-Big Ten offensive lineman.

The Saints drafted him in the seventh round of the 2006 NFL Draft. Strief was in Sean Payton’s first draft class in New Orleans. He took over as the starting right tackle at the beginning of the 2011 season and has been an offensive leader since. He’s played in 140 games as a Saint, ranking in the top 20 for most games played in the history of the franchise.

LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

Errol Laborde Renaissance Publishing

Errol Laborde holds a doctorate in political science from the University of New Orleans, and he is the Editor in Chief at Renaissance Publishing. He serves as Editor and Associate Publisher of New Orleans Magazine and Editor and Publisher of Louisiana Life Magazine. In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, Renaissance Publishing was born – its name appropriately chosen in the midst of the city’s disaster with hopes of rebirth. “Being part of starting a new company after Katrina was both frightening and exhilarating,” said Laborde. “The odds were totally against us, not only because of Katrina, but because of the turmoil in the magazine industry - somehow we made it and we are still growing.”

With experience in both print and television news, Laborde is also a producer and a regular panelist on Informed Sources, a weekly news discussion program broadcast on public television station WYESTV, Channel 12. Informed Sources airs every Friday at 7 p.m., and repeats Fridays at 11:30 p.m. Marcia Kavanaugh is the moderator. In 2013, Laborde’s Streetcar column received national recognition winning First place in the Columns category at the awards presentation of the City and Regional Magazine Association (CRMA). Laborde is also a three-time winner of the Alex Waller Award, the highest award given in print journalism by the New Orleans Press Club. Considering his immense love for New Orleans’

history, it’s no surprise that Laborde has written several books on the city’s most famous celebration. His most recent books are, “Mardi Gras: Chronicles of the New Orleans Carnival”; “Krewe: The Early Carnival from Comus to Zulu”; and “Marched the Day God, a history of the Rex organization”. “To understand Mardi Gras is to learn a lot about New Orleans,” Laborde said. “I am still not sure, though, what to think about king cake flavored vodka.”

LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

Bill Capo WWL TV

A New Orleans native, WWL-TV’s Bill Capo has been attracted to television news reporting since before he was “old enough to ride the streetcar alone.” When he was just seven years old, Capo began making daily treks to a local television station to watch all aspects of news gathering, reporting and editing firsthand - all of which was still in film-only form. At the age of 17, he took his first job working as a courier by day and as a studio camera operator by night. After receiving his Bachelor of Arts in communications from Loyola University in 1975, Capo took several reporting jobs in the Southeast before coming to WWL-TV in 1980. In his years with WWL-TV, Capo has covered everything from papal and presidential visits to cat-in-the-tree stories. He is also wellknown for his rides aboard Hurricane Hunter airplanes.

Although, Capo said that he, “absolutely cannot pick a story to call (his) favorite.” Since 1985, Capo has been the Eyewitness News Action Reporter. Aside from cutting red tape, Capo says he often brings together people who need support and those willing to give it. “Many times, New Orleanians ‘make’ the Action Report. You will not find more generous people anywhere,” said Capo. Capo offers help to Southeast Louisianans, whether they are fighting city hall, facing organ transplants or experiencing financial emergencies. In fact, his telephone hotline receives an average of 8,000 calls per year with people looking for help regarding all types of consumer problems. “I’ve seen it all,” said Capo. “From people whose bank accounts were drained when a bank failed to destroy misprinted checks, to a sportfishing yacht that turned out to be leaky rubber raft.”

Capo adds, “Being able to make a positive influence on so many people’s lives really makes my job fun.” Capo’s Action Reports air on the 5 p.m., 6 p.m., and 10 p.m. editions of Eyewitness News. “My work has taken me to a lot of places around the country and the world,” said Capo. “I can’t think of anyplace I’d rather live than in New Orleans.”
