A Word From Our President
W
elcome to the 60th Annual Excellence in Journalism Awards Gala. Tonight, we celebrate 60 years of the Press Club of New Orleans. Since 1957, journalists and public relations professionals in the city have come together in the spirit of fellowship. We sincerely thank you for being here tonight. Your participation is what makes the Press Club work. This evening is my final night as the President of the Press Club of New Orleans. I’m happy to say, I leave behind an organization that has never been healthier or more vibrant. The PCNO is on sound financial footing, and tonight, for the first time ever, we’ll hand out three $2,500 college scholarships. As soon as next year, we expect to increase those even more. Our revamped Silver Scribe competition, which now includes multiple seminars for prospective young journalists, is a growing success. Plus, these Press Club Awards have never been more competitive. In the last three years, we’ve had more total entries in the Press Club Awards than at any time in the 60-year history of our organization. If you’re nominated for an award tonight, be proud. The competition was strong in every category. In addition to handing out awards tonight, we’ll honor two amazing journalists with Lifetime Achievement Awards: Renette Dejoie-Hall and Clancy DuBos. Renette and Clancy embody everything we try to be as journalists; they were easy, unanimous votes by the Press Club Board. After tonight, I turn the reigns over to Melanie Spencer of Renaissance Publishing. I have no doubt she will do a great job leading the Press Club forward. David Baker and the rest of the Press Club Board are unbelievably dedicated, hard-working, and just fun to be around. We hope you feel that spirit tonight. Again, thanks for being here. Enjoy your evening. Doug Mouton President, Press Club of New Orleans 2016-18

He’s also won an Emmy, an Edward R Murrow Award and more than a dozen first place awards from the Press Club of New Orleans. about us
I
n 1957, nearly 100 journalists and public relations professionals gathered in modest quarters in the 200 block of Camp Street to organize the Press Club of New Orleans. The goal of the group was to promote and improve the field of journalism and its related professions through professional development. Today, Press Club activities include the professional, the educational and the social. The club’s 300-plus members represent every level of their fields. We meet to help our colleagues in communications keep up with the latest inside information. Our goal is to ensure members reach their career potential through professional development, and to simply enjoy good times with peers. These are just a few of the reasons to join The Press Club of New Orleans. b Oa r d o f D i r e c t o r s , 2 017-18 OFFICERS

C
lancy DuBos is the political editor of Gambit. He began his journalism career in May 1973 as a teenager at The Times-Picayune and has worked for decades in New Orleans print and television media. He served as a political analyst for WDSU-TV and WVUETV, and has been at WWL-TV for nearly 11 years. He served as president of the Press Club of New Orleans and as president of the Gridiron Club in the 1980s. Clancy and his wife Margo bought Gambit in 1991 and built it into one of the country’s most well-respected alt-weekly papers, employing dozens of New Orleans journalists over the years. He has won awards for his work from the Louisiana Press Association, the Association of A lternative Newsweeklies and the Associated Press Association of Louisiana and Mississippi. Earlier this year, the DuBoses sold Gambit to Georges Media Group, but he continues to write his weekly “Politics” column for the paper, and his “Clancy’s Commentary” runs on WWL-TV every Tuesday night. A proud graduate of Holy Cross High School, UNO and Loyola Law School, Clancy was instrumental in getting Holy Cross rebuilt after Hurricane Katrina and the federal floods. In his spare time, Clancy enjoys hunting, fishing and spending time with Margo and their sons, Brandin and Will.

s both a native of New Orleans and third-generation publishing professional, Renette Dejoie-Hall has spent her life connecting communities to news that matters to them. “For me, this is more than just a career, it is my family’s legacy.” After earning a Bachelors degree from Boston College in 1976, Hall returned to Louisiana and to The Louisiana Weekly – a weekly newspaper founded by her grandfather (Constant Charles Dejoie Sr.) during the post-World War I Era in 1925 as a portal through which African Americans could express and share news important to their communities, and as a means to combat racial injustice in New Orleans and beyond. She started her career with the paper as a newspaper girl with a weekly route at the age of 8. She’s also been an office clerk, typesetter, darkroom developer, graphic designer, layout designer and salesperson. She explored other industries, subsequently beginning a career in radio where she worked as a sales professional for a Black-owned radio conglomerat. Hall eventually returned to the family business in 1997. Today, she is the paper’s president and publisher. She has been a member of the Louisiana Press Association (LPA) board since 2008 and has served on its Executive Committee for the past four years. Hall is also a member of the National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA), National Newspaper Association (NNA), Louisiana Black Publishers Association (LPBA) and the Associated Press. She is also a member of the Board of Directors at WYES New Orleans and the Dillard University Ray Charles Program in African-American Material Culture in addition to being a donor to several charitable organizations and working with not-for-profit organizations and initiatives to assist with community rebuilding in post-Katrina New Orleans. More than 90 years after its inception, Hall continues to build on her family’s legacy. Her efforts have earned her numerous honors from the New Orleans Association of Black Journalists, the National Rainbow/ PUSH organization, CityBusiness The Childhood Family and Learning Foundation and the LPA. The front-page stories of the paper have been recognized by peer publications such as The Bay State Banner in Boston – all of which are reflections of a commitment to continue serving the New Orleans Metro Area as well as state, national and international readers by bringing them stories of interest and concern to Blacks and minority communities around the globe. She was married to James C. Hall for 36 years until his untimely death in 2016. She is a mother of three: Brandon and Christopher, who represent the fourth generation of the family at The Louisiana Weekly; and Lauren. She is also the grandmother of Carter, Austin and Sydney.
