Extended Project Qualification (EPQ)

AQA What is an EPQ?

The EPQ is a project completed by students to supplement their threeA Levels. It is completed independently and is assessed as much onthe process of completing the project as the end product.

Under the guidance of a supervisor, students identify, design and deliver an individual project in the shape of either a formal, structuredpiece of writing of 5000 words, or creation of an ‘artefact’ combined with a 1000 word report. The opportunities for an ‘artefact’ based project are endless and could include creating a website, making a model, producing a film, composing a piece of music or designing ascientific experiment.

An important part of this qualification is the production of a presentation following the completion of the project itself, where students will reflect on the process they have been through and theskills they have acquired.

What do universities say about EPQ?

The EPQ prepares students for the rigours of undergraduate study through developing vital skills of independent research and decision-making, and is accordingly valued by universities. It is useful for university interviews, including Oxbridge, giving students an opportunity to display passion and initiativebeyond their main programme of study.

In recognition of the valuable nature of the EPQ the UCAS points awarded are worth half the points for a full A Level, e.g. an A* grade at A Level is worth 56 UCAS Points and an A* grade in an EPQ is worth 28 points. Universities may use the EPQ to make decisions between similar candidates and particularly on results day it may influence a decision if an offer is marginally missed. An increasing range of universities will make dualoffers for students taking the EPQ qualification (e.g. AAA or AAB if an A/A* is achieved in the EPQ).

Whilst universities recognise the value of the EPQ, they will still make offers based on three A Level grades. It is, therefore, very important that undertaking an EPQ does not impact on a student’s ability to achieve thebest possible grades in their chosen three A Levels. A decision to undertake an EPQ has to be taken on an individual basis.

Skills developed through the EPQ

Students are supported by the provision of sessions on necessary skills such as researching, referencing, critical thinking, time management and presenting, abilities which could make a true difference to the calibre of work students are able to produce when they reach university. The aim is to foster early the kindof independent learning so sought after by higher education establishments the world over.
