{residential design} Kitchen & Bath This course challenges students to use planning requirements to create universal and accessible designs. Construction, electrical, and basic plumbing are taught with emphasis on these applications within residential kitchens and baths. Industry relevant nomenclature and product information are used to create technical and custom aesthetic solutions.

Residential Environments This studio course explores various types of residential dwellings as they relate to different inhabitants. Project work applies the programming and design development phases of the residential design process to include information gathering, needs analysis, concept and spatial development, and FF&E selections based on research and suitability.

Advanced 3D Digital Design & Presentation This elective course focuses on the advanced study of the use of CAD with modeling systems for the purpose of interior design presentations. Studio projects transform CAD floor plans and models into 3-D software programs, adding lighting and materials to create photo-realistic renderings.

Interior Design Internship Internship is a monitored program for senior-level students to work part-time within the interior design industry. Field experience is an opportunity for students to apply and advance their knowledge, skills and professionalism under the supervision of a qualified mentor.

This Tuscan inspired kitchen with a modern twist is the perfect place to escape the troubles of the day. The warm and inviting colors and textures offer a cozy feeling, while room for knick-knacks and other personal collections offer the base for an eclectic touch. A comfortable triangle has been imagined between the refrigerator, sink and range offering a fluid and trouble free space to work in. Layers upon layers of decorative lighting illuminate this space, from the toekick to the open shelving to the cabinetry. Under cabinet task lighting is added to make preparation tasks easier. The whole room is centered about a large linear hanging fixture supplied in a crisp white to coincide with the ceiling. A romantic chandelier completes the seating area and wall washers hit the dividing columns at striking angles.

Group Project:

Master Bath

This master bath was created as a team project with the help of Katelyn Baughman and Andrea Chala. The bath was designed for an elderly couple looking for an open concept space with easily accessible storage. The tasks for the design were split among all members equally. The overall layout was a collaborative effort, as was the product specifications. Renee created an itemized furniture plan, as well as a mechanical plan with lighting and electrical information. Andrea assisted with the plan creations and produced a detailed elevation of the tub area.

The ultimate goal for this home was to create a modern and open environment with easy flow from room to room. Based on suggestions made by the homeowners, the bedrooms stayed together in one section of the house with a fourth added in the garage space after being insulated and brought up to grade. The walls in this home that once made this family feel separated have been replaced with moveable screens and functional dividers. Complementary colored accents created some fun in the space and striped cabinetry in the kitchen added a touch of sophisticated playfulness. Numerous windows were added to let in the natural light and to add to the curb appeal of the home. No-VOC paint and flooring materials were used and compact fluorescent lamps were installed where feasible. Heavy draperies were installed on the larger windows to provide extra insulation when needed.

By utilizing the Room Planner program available through the La-Z-Boy Screen Test system, space planning was made easy. Once the basic room dimensions were set the program opened to a full catalog of La-Z-Boy products with the ability to drop them into the room at scale. These floor plans are created for the In-Home Design service offered by the company and give the consumer more information about placement, clearances and arrangement options. The three-dimensional version is a helpful tool for visualization.

Design Experience Learned the process of furniture construction, including frame and cushion components. Studied anthropometrics to ensure the correct furniture was selected for each consumer. Assisted Designer with the In-Home Design process, fabric selection and space planning. Used color theory to help create the consumer’s desired atmosphere.

Sales Experience Gained the ability to speak confidently and passionately with consumers regarding the product. Learned about different modality types found in consumers, including visual, auditory, and kinesthetic. Studied different selling techniques that often aide the consumer in making a final decision.

{commercial design} Commercial Environments In this advanced course, the design of an upscale, global, corporate interior reflects the comprehensive synthesis of problem identification, research, programming, preliminary design, design development, and construction documents. Problem solving centers on the creative and technical aspects involved in the universal design of commercial environments including space planning with code compliance, way-finding techniques, and specifying corporate furnishings, finishes and materials.

Interior Detailing & Systems This senior level studio is a study of the materials and fabrication techniques used in the design and construction of interiors and how these details are communicated three-dimensionally and in construction documents. Content includes interior construction detailing of ceilings, walls, flooring, and millwork. Project solutions will consider the integration of building technology such as mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and other relevant systems.

Habitude is a social media company comprised mostly of people in their twenties and thirties and as such the character of their work space has a modern, quirky atmosphere. A mixture of classic office furniture arranged in a playful manner offers a place where creative juices can really begin to flow. Traditional pathways are nearly nonexistent, which results in a very open feel throughout the entire space. The energetic vibe given off by the Habitude family is reflected perfectly in their work space. The fun colors and soft sturdy fabrics pair perfectly with modern industrial elements to create an enjoyable and engaging environment for employees and clients alike.

The entire space is saturated in a complementary color palette, with an exposed ceiling that offers an intricate and industrial view. Large ceiling panels are hung sporadically in each area to show wayfinding and department areas. A glass front to the conference and break rooms makes the space seem bigger and allow for outside light to penetrate.

{specialized design} Computer Aided Design 3 Students successfully completing this course will be able to use Computer-Aided Design software to assist them in their three-dimensional project development. Students will gain a comprehensive understanding of the integration of computer technology into the design process and an introduction to BIM (Building Information Modeling) technology.

Specialty Design This senior level studio course covers the physical and psychological factors that impact hospitality environments. Students are expected to graphically demonstrate original and viable solutions. Research on human factors, codes, and lighting are combined with product mix and multi-sensory aspects of design to influence perceived value to the customer.

Interior Design Thesis I & II Thesis I: In this senior level course, students use crtitical thinking through research, writing, discussion, and problem-solving. Emphasis is on the identification of a design problem that could be better met through more responsible design. Students choose a research topic with instructor approval. Thesis II: In this senior level studio course, students develop a viable and visual solution for the project typically researched in Thesis I. Solutions incorporate environmentally sound, cost effective, and responsible design methods to influence an audience using creative delivery methods.

Ivories is a modern piano bar and night club featuring live piano music, as well as a bar and dining type atmosphere. Inspiration was derived from pop artist Andy Warhol, and as such, bright and playful colors are found in every area. The mezzanine catwalk is reminiscent of the tail of a music note, and the shape of the two full service bars follows suit. In lieu of booths, modular sofas and love seats are used to create endless possibilities for seating arrangements

Thank You...

The past three and a half years have been an amazing journey for me. I have grown into someone that I never thought I could be and I would have never gotten here without the tremendous amount of help I received from the wonderful people in my life. I would like to personally thank my instructors at the Illinois Institute of Art, especially Suzann Nordstrom, whose excitement and passion helped me to stay positive, even on my darkest days. I would also like to thank my family and friends, who were all very understanding of my fifteen hour days and always pushed me to do my best. Finally, I want to thank my best friend and soul mate. Without your love and support, I would not be here.
