end Fashion Quarterly was not a well-planned venture. It was a spontaneous idea, that germinated over wine and a conversation about shoes. Why in the world would anyone think that Bend needed a fashion magazine? That Central Oregon is big enough to have its own fashion magazine? That people would find it interesting, inspiring and readable? During this admittedly short creative process (about two months), I realized that innovators have always navigated the space between art and commerce. That style is about your attitude, your clothes, your energy, how you take care of yourself. Some may think I'm crazy, but sometimes you just have to follow the muse and try to make it happen. In Bend Fashion Quarterly, we discovered people who love fashion and deeply care about their community and have a preeference for "shopping local." The lovely models in these pages all have stories of their own that they were willing to share with us. We found some were reclaiming their lives, establishing their own form of beauty and style. They simply look fabulous on these pages, but these photos barely capture their intrinsic beauty. Along the way, we discovered that this magazine has the potential to dig deeper than the original vision. We've created a series on "happiness" by Maeve Perle, more BadAss survivors and their unique styles by Jennifer Riker, designers of clothes, hats, shoes and purses and will profile local athletes and outdoor heroes who inspire us. We hope you'll find this magazine part of your happiness quotient: a go to place for finding and selecting your unique style, a resource for featuring the great things both women and men are doing in our communities, a niche for motivation and a showcase of design and creativity. Please take note of our founding sponsors, our advisors and our contributors featured throughout the magazine...these are our champions who helped develop the concept and financed our successful kickstarter campaign. Whether you are male or female, our intent is for you to walk away armed with insights to captivate your style. Pamela Hulse Andrews ~ BFQ Founder

hen it comes to new ideas, Desperado Boutique is always planning the next big move. After 19 years in the industry, owner Joanne Sunnarborg decided it was time for some rebranding, and you will be so excited about the result! Desperado has shifted into high-end, eclectic fashion that reaches out to a broad range of fashionistas, while still sticking to Western roots. Probably most well known for their signature cowboy boots, shoes have always been in the spotlight at Desperado. But what if that spotlight could be even bigger? Shoes &… is the name of the new Desperado shoe store that opened its doors in October. From designer names, including Freebird by Steve Madden, Charles David and Old Gringo, to of course cowboy boots, the shoe store has an extensive collection of shoes and accessories. “We are truly excited to be opening a shoe and accessory store in the Old Mill District. It’s what our customers are asking for. It’s filling a niche of fashionable footwear and accessories that will be chic and comfortable,” says Sunnarborg. Shoes &… is located right next to Desperado on the Old Mill District’s North end. The new shoe store has its own entrance on Powerhouse Drive, but is accessible from Desperado by a doorway between the two stores. “They are definitely two separate stores, but we want people to be able to easily access our shoes and accessories to go with a new outfit or be able to pick out clothes to match that great new pair of heels,” says Sunnarborg. The new store opens up so many opportunities to both the staff and the customer. “We are very lucky to live in a community that loves to shop local. Bend’s economy may be tourist based, but our core demographic is from right here in Central Oregon,” says Sunnarborg. Heels, boots, sandals, scarves, jewelry and so much more are readily available at the new boutique. Desperado gets a steady round of applause for their rebranding success! www.desperadoboutique.com

The Felt Hat
The felt, wide-brimmed hat has made a comeback over the past few years and has finally landed in Bend. Boutiques all over town are now stuffed with hats in beautiful shades of black, burgundy and grey. The best part? Felt hats have no gender. Depending on the length of the brim, they can flatter both men and women. If you want the hat, wear the hat. 18 Bend FASHION Quarterly•Winter 2015

Rose Gold Jewelry
We haven’t seen velvet be this popular since the 90s, but let me tell you how excited I am that it is back! Jackets, tops, skirts, and, my personal favorite, pants are all subject to the velvet trend. These beautiful jackets from Desperado have me swooning.
My verdict: plain gold is out and rose gold is in. This summer was filled with beautiful rose gold rings earrings and bracelets. The pink blonde hue is huge right now in hair color. (See various celebrities like Blake Lively, Cara Delevingne and Sienna Miller for reference). Rose gold has that unique pink-hue that is just as luxurious as original gold. Look out gold, a new metal is rising in the winter trend ranks.

I
Function Makes the Form 22 Bend FASHION Quarterly•Winter 2015
just moved to Bend which, like any outdoorsy or adventurous person would think, is awesome, though I have yet to figure out Bend fashion. As a new resident, I’ve been paying extra close attention to fads and attempting to earn the title of a Bendite for myself. Do I have to have a water bottle that keeps cold for 24 hours to prove that I’m from Bend? Is a sunset depiction of the Cascades on my trucker hat the best way to blend in? Do I need to be really knowledgeable about beer to convince people of my residency? Clearly, finding characteristics
that all Bendites share has been rather challenging. In fact, I have come to find that there is much more diversity than correlation in Bend trends. Which, when you think about it, is very understandable. How many different things are there to do in Bend? Truthfully, no one could list them all in one sitting. We’ve got a plethora of winter activities, water hobbies, endless trails and everything in between that resides in Bend. So in reality, what makes Bend fashion is the wide variation of adventurers in this dynamic city. Each unique and audacious individual wears whatever it is that works best for his or her specific endeavors; it’s the function that makes the form. Whether you’re fresh out of yoga and spiced up your workout clothes after class, have a wet swimsuit dampening your top layers because you just got off the Deschutes or are wearing your barn boots in the grocery store because you went horseback riding this morning, it’s all acceptable. That’s what Bend is. It’s athletic gear and running shoes because you’re about to jog Pilot Butte four times. It’s helmet hair and dirt on your face because you took a spill on your mountain bike earlier. It’s a giant backpack and bags under your eyes because you woke up in the middle of the night to catch the sunrise at the top of the South Sister. That’s Bend, and it’s the Bendites and all their assorted pastimes that make it so incredibly diverse and fabulously fashionable. 23 Bend FASHION Quarterly•Winter 2015

ichael Sterling Bryant, wildlife artist, was born and raised in Oregon. Compelled to make something with his own hands at a young age, he carved a beautiful lamp out of juniper for his brother’s wedding and thus discovered a talent for wood carving. He ventured into creating rustic furniture and then continued on in pursuing a new passion for abstract wildlife shapes within his art. The woods that Mike 24 Bend FASHION Quarterly•Winter 2015
STORY BY TORI YOUNGBAUER PHOTOS BY STEVE TRITTEN hand selects are just as rare and beautiful as his carvings. “These things interact in an organic form. Their beauty lies within their lines and motions,” says Bryant. “From raw log, I start with an idea. I follow my intuition and the wood speaks to me.” Bryant has won countless awards all over the country and has gotten commissions from a long list of celebrities. Bryant’s work has now expanded to a beautiful line of handmade,
wooden sunglasses that are just as exceptionally beautiful as his artwork. Each pair is made from a different wood which makes each piece incredibly unique. The ebony and maple glasses for example are carved out of a single piece of wood. There are frames available that can be used for prescription lenses as well. The glasses are currently available at The Wooden Jewel. Michael owns The Wooden Jewel with his wife Denise Bryant, and
opened their doors in 2013 in the Sunriver Village shopping area. They decided that after years of traveling to art shows and long days on the road that they could combine their experience and talents in one place and stay close to home. n this issue you’ll read about Joanne’s new shoe store, Shoes &...by Desperado, recently opened next door to her boutique clothing store. It doesn’t take a second look to see Joanne knows fashion. At first glance you see a slim blonde dressed to the nines wearing an outstanding pair of custom cowboy boots or making a statement with a classic blazer and a hand-stitched pair of jeans. Sunnarborg says with a smile, “I started to pay attention to fashion in the first grade, but the most important thing I’ve learned over the years is making sure a person is comfortable in what they are wearing.” It’s that later philosophy she gives credit to her business success. As the owner and proprietor of Desperado in the Old Mill District, Sunnarborg is celebrating the boutique’s 19th anniversary. Surviving a challenging economy is no small feat. “I don’t pretend this has been an easy journey,” Sunnarborg shrugs. “Boutiques don’t sell products people have to have so I appreciate every customer who walks through my door. Any little thing I can do to help that customer have a good experience is what keeps them coming back.” Desperado spent its first 11 years in two locations in Portland’s historic upscale Pearl District. It started as a high-end western lifestyle boutique but has rebranded to offer clothes, boots, jewelry and gifts that fit the Central Oregon lifestyle. “I would describe the new Desperado as a mix of bohemian charm with the latest on trend fashion for women and men,” says Sunnarborg. “I’ve expanded our price point too. We still carry many of our high end lines, but if it’s a $39 shirt at Desperado, it’s going to look great and be well made. I’m going to stand behind it.” Desperado in the Old Mill District www.desperadoboutique.com, 541-749-9980

ulu’s Boutique was established in 2002 in downtown Bend. It started out as a small boutique on Minnesota Avenue in one of the historic buildings from the 1920s. Beautiful brick walls, hardwood floors and eclectic interior design help make Lulu’s Boutique visually pleasing to the eye and act as a great backdrop to the fabulous mix of clothes you will find there. In 2008 Patti Orsatti took a leap of faith and bought Lulu’s. She loved shopping for clothes and she has been successful in her other business careers so she combined her business sense and love of shopping into the ownership of Lulu’s. Since 2008 Patti has expanded Lulu’s three times and has tripled the size of the store. She says, “I’ve been able to expand because of my awesome customers, great staff and of course some fantastic clothing lines that I’ve found in travels to the fashion markets.” Patti has an eye for what people like and is truly passionate about bringing great style and reasonably priced fashion to Bend. It’s clearly exceptional and Jennifer adds that it’s also very affordable. “I opened the store because I have always loved fashion and shopping in Downtown Bend” says Jennifer. “I wanted to offer a more affordable and still unique shopping experience for other budget conscious women. This November, we opened our second shop in Sisters, wanting to bring a unique and affordable shopping experience to Sisters as well. “Bringing you carefully chosen styles of clothing, scarves, hats, shoes and jewelry, at surprisingly affordable prices, is our passion,” says Jennifer. “Discover why discerning woman of all ages find our modern twist on romantic, bohemian, vintage and European inspirations and exceptional service a truly “faveurable experience!” Located in Downtown Bend by historic Drake Park and Bend Burger Co. Anderson, event co-producer. “It’s so exciting to see students bringing new life and creativity to all the stuff we are so accustomed to getting rid of.” Past year’s audience members have seen models clad in everything from old blue tarps, empty paella rice bags, gift cards, and even speaker wires and car upholstery. Rooted in a love of fashion, an appreciation of art and a passion for the planet, this fundraiser features an eclectic, wearable art runway show (featuring both trash fashion and re-fashioned garments), a live and silent auction, a gallery style marketplace (where contributing local artists sell and showcase their work) and local food and drink. Part of the inspired and creative show includes a Business Challenge where local businesses create a garment from their refuge and compete, by an audience-decided vote, to win the coveted Trash Trophy. Rubbish Renewed is currently accepting runway submissions for the 2016 show. For submission information and other event information, go to www.rubbishrenewed.com. THE BLOODY MARY BY BENDISTILLERY
. w o n s Aprés
O
nce called the world’s most complex cocktail, the origin of the Bloody Mary is not entirely certain but, like so many cocktails from the 1920s, seems to include Harry’s New York Bar in Paris, Prohibition and Ernest Hemmingway. Originally called A Bucket of Blood, the drink was refined as it spread to Prohibition-era America, becoming known along the way as a Red Snapper and Red Hammer then finally the Bloody Mary around 1946. This is the name that stuck. Hemingway’s contribution seems to have been to popularize it as a morning-after remedy – his instructions called for it to be made by the pitcher. “Any smaller amount is worthless,” he reportedly said. Despite any dispute over the details of its beginnings, the Bloody Mary is now an indispensable part of the modern cocktail landscape. It is certainly one of the most modified drinks, ranging from simply tomato, pepper and vodka to variations calling for complex spice mixes to interpretations sporting tomatillo peppers in place of the classic tomato. As with any classic cocktail, you are best served taking your inspiration from the original. You can travel to the Hemingway Bar at The Ritz Hotel in Paris to get an original Red Snapper or, if the flight to Paris is inconvenient, you can whip up your own. Our recommendation is to stay close to the original but with a local update (this is Bend after all). Crater Lake Pepper Vodka from Bendistillery is the perfect base for a Bloody Mary. It is made with five different peppers offering both heat and flavor. The Demetri’s Spice Blend is a Seattle-made mix that provides the black pepper and Worchester. Couple with fresh tomato juice and you have a Bloody Mary that Hemmingway would order by the pitcher.
Crater Lake Bloody Mary
• •
from the Bendistillery Tasting Room 2 oz. Crater Lake Pepper Vodka, 4 oz. tomato juice, ½ oz. Demetri’s Bloody Mary Spice Blend, ½ fresh lemon squeezed. Combine ingredients over ice in a cocktail shaker. Shake thoroughly and strain into an ice-filled, celery salt-rimmed glass. Garnish with abandon – celery stalk, lemon wheel, olive, pickled asparagus spear – etc.

eing an entrepreneur was always in my blood, even before I knew there was a word for it. From early dawn paper routes to selling the most Girl Scout goodies, as a child intuitively I knew having my own business could lead to a life with fewer constraints and more choices. But there can be a price for being enterprising and a lone ranger in the world of commerce. Sometimes you lose. I would say monetarily I’ve lost more than I’ve gained, but I wouldn’t give up any of my business experiences. The strength and insight I now have is priceless – it has made me bold and irrefutably brave. After licking our wounds over the breakup of a family/business partnership, my husband Jay Riker and I decided it was time to go forth and thrive again. Finding opportunities comes out of recognizing a need. What I experienced in the Bend community was a lack of fashion forward women’s clothing stores that had an accessible price point and an environment that felt genuinely welcoming. 39 Bend FASHION Quarterly•Winter 2015
Badass Women
P
utting my big girl panties on and diving once again into the unknown, we launched Brave Collective—a modern day mercantile for all women. The name came easily—Brave. It’s how I felt and needed to be and ultimately what I recognized is what all women are when they allow themselves. Brave is not a description often used or shouted loud enough. We women carry with us many other names and feelings—shame, guilt, insecurity and possibly the worst—unworthiness. The dictionary defines brave as possessing courageous endurance. Before the doors opened I knew that Brave Collective wasn’t going to be about clothes but about the women who wear them. What I love most about my work is I get the privilege of hearing women’s stories. Women have the unique ability to quickly connect— especially in a safe environment. We can allow ourselves to be vulnerable and openly share our wounds and wishes. This is part of our healing dance and how we learn and support each other. Wound tight within these stories I hear a pattern of courageous endurance, undeniable bravery and grief. What is grief? It’s something most people don’t want to acknowledge and often carry in silence. It’s as common as a cold but as isolating as leprosy. I’ve never known a person, who has lived a full life, who has not experienced grief in some way—at some level. This deep sorrow may come quietly as a subtle disappointment or hard and heavy as a crippling disease, a childhood abuse or a sudden death. Whatever form it takes, grief is a ball and chain that can either bury us or lift us to the light of intense connection and understanding. It’s sometimes the very catalyst that creates the deepest change for self-awareness, enlightenment and ironically joy. These stories of grief and enduring courage, as well as the women who tell them are worth sharing—these women are Bend’s Badass Brave. To read more about these amazing women of Bend and others please go to www. ShopBraveCollective.com. To nominate a courageous woman in your life please email ShopBraveCollective@gmail.com.

ristin walked into Brave beaming with enthusiasm and good-old American spunk that you can’t help but pay attention to. Within the first 10 minutes of meeting her we’ve become friends, and she shares with me her dream of playing professional golf on the LPGA tour. This giant aspiration to play golf professionally started when she was 17 in Chico, California. But just as she was beginning to set records at local courses one of life’s blows struck. While in college Kristin was diagnosed with cervical cancer. She left school, as well as golf, to heal but the thought of playing pro persisted. On her journey to becoming a professional player, Kristin has had other setbacks including financial where she spent nights sleeping in her car and eating peanuts from club snack bars. She continues to work hard mastering her skills on and off the course. Whether she’s trying out for a golf reality TV show or being a spokesperson for local businesses, Kristin wants to share her passion for the game and hopefully inspire others to not give up on their dreams—no matter what life throws their way. f you go to a spin class at Excel Fitness you may get lucky and have Kim Hamlet as your instructor. She’s a master at getting out of her class what they came for— sweat. The braces on her spinning legs might give you a clue that there’s more going on with her, but most likely you’d be focused on her amazing smile. In her 40’s, Kim was diagnosed with Primary Lateral Sclerosis (PLS) which is a cousin to ALS. The doctors predicted within four years she would be wheelchair bound. Ten years later, although it has become increasingly difficult, Kim is still walking. “I have to keep moving and eating healthy,” Kim tells me. She wants to share this insight and inspire others with similar disabilities to do the same and to be careful not to always accept what the medical community might tell them. Kim works out every day and she knows it’s what has made the difference. She surrounds herself with loving people whether at the gym or through her work as an esthetician. Her business is called Skin Deep and is located at Roots Salon in Bend. Kim is looking into alternative experimental treatment not covered through insurance. ometimes you meet a person and they have that star quality. It’s indefinable. They glow, they glisten and they make you feel you are in the presence of someone who’s had many lives—that’s Bo. Many people in the community know Bo as one of the pastors at Westside Church and that a few months ago she lost her husband of 30 years to ALS. What they may not know is that she has taken her grief to lead others out of theirs. As a prolific writer she has written several books on the topic that can be found on Amazon and that her most recent is called When Holidays Hurt. Bo shares her wisdom with me that there is a joy and sorrow dance in learning to live through grief. “Suffering tends to make us scrappy,” Bo says. “To thrive again is through the working out of it—that’s the win.” To learn more about Bo and subscribe to her blog go to www.BoStern.com If you’re a single mother and would like a complimentary copy of her book please contact her. 43 Bend FASHION Quarterly•Winter 2015

How to Get Your Happy On–Spa Time
HAPPINESS BY MAEVE PERLE PHOTOGRAPHY BY RYAN MURRAY & TORI YOUNGBAUER
H
ow does self-love and taking care of ourselves contribute to our happiness and well-being? Simply put, spas revive and heal our senses; the plush surroundings, the fragrant creams and oils, the gently soothing music, the caring touch of the therapist all serve to lull us into serene tranquility. Indeed, the benefits of a healthy spa ritual go beyond the realm of just a sensual experience. The positive memories we associate with this investment in our overall health and wellness stay with us for much longer than the fleeting happiness associated with, say, a bar of chocolate or a glass of wine. The psychological payback of gifting ourselves this sacred time, allows us to abandon technology and work/family demands in favor of floating into the realm of reflection, introspection and mindfulness. Our overextended lives and monkey-minds are instantly soothed into a sense of detachment from the outside world and feelings of calm, contentment abound. This mindfulness has been shown to bring about that elusive sense of inner peace and true contentment we all chase. Physically, massage and other touch therapies have been shown to regulate hormones, reduce stress, boost immune system, foster sounder sleep and help us relax and unwind — so it comes as no surprise that we can add that this in turn brings about the delicious emotions of pleasure and happiness. To make sure you are happy and gain the maximum pleasure from your treatment, first figure out what would benefit you most. If you are searching for: 46 Bend FASHION Quarterly•Winter 2015

lan your day in advance. Set aside enough time to truly rejuvenate yourself. Phones should be unplugged and kids/interruptions planned for, if you need a babysitter to ensure you have peace and quiet, do it. Shop beforehand. We have wonderful, natural and healthy home treatments in Central Oregon. Arrange to have some downtime around the treatments. Where’s that book you wanted to read? Can you build in a meditation practice or do a relaxation yoga class beforehand? Strive to re-create a serene spa ambience. Lay on luxurious extras such as soft robes, candles, aromatherapy bubble bath and tranquil music. Be sure to indulge in a piece of chocolate or a glass of champagne, this is your day after all. Make sure to look at what treatment should go first. Your manicure should come after a sugar body scrub. Treatments like baths, body scrubs or facial masks are easy and relaxing home treatments you can do by yourself, along with manicures and pedicures, maybe leave the more technical stuff for another day. As in all health practices, stay hydrated and try to eat nutritionally balanced meals. On medication? Always check with your health specialist if you are unsure.

all and make a reservation, ask for an email confirming it. Ask for cancellation policy. Discuss any health challenges you have with the reservationist. This will help the therapist plan for any contraindications well in advance. • Specify whether you want a male or female therapist, • Budget for 15-20 percent extra for a tip- it’s expected. • Arrive early. • It’s easier for therapists to work around no underwear, but if you are not comfortable, leave them on. • Never refer to your therapist as a masseuse, they are therapists. • Leave self-consciousness behind, the therapists are schooled and practiced in anatomy, they have seen hundreds of imperfect bodies before. • Don’t shave your legs if the treatment involves salt. • Be honest and kindly assertive with anyone who tries to up sell you products you don’t want or cannot afford. • Plan to be quiet and turn off your cell phone. • Don’t feel the need to talk to the therapist during your treatment. Silence is golden in a spa.

Finding a Personal Trainer by DAVID CLEWETT PHOTOGRAPHY BY TORI YOUNGBAUER

ant to get fit and stay fit? Find a personal trainer to stay focused and serious about reaching fitness goals. A trainer will help design workouts catered to your needs, set achievable and realistic goals and provide positive feedback and coaching. A quality trainer pushes their clients past their comfort level and provides guidance, education, a reason to keep showing up and helps track progress while offering encouragement. There are many criteria to consider before making a commitment. Personal trainers should have certification from a reputable fitness organization or a degree in an exercise or fitness field. They should cater to their clients’ personal needs and learning preferences and be able to offer success stories and client referrals to show success in their area of expertise. Enthusiasm is vital for personal trainers as they need to be passionate in representing the lifestyle that the client is looking to achieve. Bend residents are always on the move and health and fitness are a priority. Fortunately, there are many skilled and qualified personal trainers in Bend and each one has a particular specialty so that people of any fitness level can find the perfect trainer for their needs and goals. Rehabilitation, high intensity training, weight loss, sports training and other unique training accommodations are available. 50 Bend FASHION Quarterly•Winter 2015
JAMES ENGUM & JENNIFER SCHAAF
J
JAMES ENGUM ames Engum is the co-owner, program manager and a lead trainer at Horizon Line in Bend. Horizon Line is a personal training studio that encourages its clients to train hard, eat smart and play often. At Horizon Line you only strength train once per week which corresponds with the way the human body responds to stress. Since gym culture can be off-putting Horizon Line puts a priority on approachability. Their only requirement is that clients have the desire to improve. Balancing workout programs with individual needs that complement each client’s personal life is their ultimate goal. “Anyone who has identified a deficiency in their physical experience” should consider hiring a personal trainer, according to Engum. “If you find that you lack the strength, flexibility, power or stamina that you need in order to truly enjoy your physical life and you don’t know what to do about it on your own, you should get some help from a professional,” he said. A personal trainer like Engum and Horizon Line is ideal for the Bend lifestyle because for them it is all about efficiency. “Our program is only once-per-week for 30 minutes and we 51 Bend FASHION Quarterly•Winter 2015
can provide all the strength development you need. That frees up a substantial amount of time to pursue the active lifestyle that Bend living provides,” Engum said. Horizon Line specializes in High Intensity Training which puts an emphasis on the intensity of effort over the duration or frequency. “At present, this is our one and only service and we approach it with precision. We use very advanced techniques, which require a lot of attention to detail, focus and mindfulness,” Engum said. Jeremy Boethin has trained at Horizon Line for over five years and has seen tremendous success. “When I first heard of High Intensity Training I was skeptical because it seemed too good to be true! I could build strength in ONE, 30-minute session per week? After my first month I was hooked and after five years I am still shocked at the simplicity of the training and the maximum benefit I get,” he said. For Engum, the best part of being a personal trainer is helping “people forge themselves into a stronger, healthier, happier and more effective version of themselves. I love being witness when someone has a breakthrough and discovers a new level of potential,” he said. www.horizonlinebend.com info@horizonlinebend.com

RUTH ANN CLARKE uth Ann Clarke is the owner of Functional Fitness Personal Training and Yoga Therapy LLC in Bend and has over 15 years of experience in the field of fitness and wellness in Central Oregon. She is an American Council on Exercise (ACE) Certified Medical Exercise Specialist and designs clinical and rehab programs for individuals following treatment or rehabilitation for injuries or documented diseases. As an ACE certified personal trainer she brings experience, knowledge, professionalism and passion to her clients. She has a degree in exercise science and received her 200-hour yoga certification through Rolf Gates. Clarke offers a variety of services including personal consultations and physical assessments, post and pre-surgery and rehab training, sports conditioning and injury prevention, individual, partner, group and corporate training and yoga therapy. According to Clarke, it is beneficial for someone to have a personal trainer if they “need motivation to get moving to ensure they have an optimum physical quality of life. It is especially beneficial for someone who has not had physical activity as a part of their life, has been away from it for a while, is recovering from any injury, or is starting a new sport or endeavor.”
52 Bend FASHION Quarterly•Winter 2015
Gloria Davis has been a client at Functional Fitness Personal Training and Yoga Therapy LLC for eight years since she moved to Bend and made a commitment to improve her fitness level. She is approaching 70 and credits Clarke with her overall health and fitness. “She is very tuned into her clients—what they need, their strengths and weaknesses. I always feel better, stronger and healthier when I leave a session with Ruth Ann! She is a skilled personal trainer and yoga instructor and working with her all these years has been life changing for me,” Davis said. Jane Leach began training ten years ago when Clarke became her group personal trainer. “Ruth Ann is one of the most positive and encouraging people I know. She loves her work and takes the time to familiarize herself with your physical issues, your history of exercise and what you want to gain from your time with her,” Leach said. For Clarke, the best part of being a personal trainer is the “opportunity to meet amazing people and see their joy when they realize they can do so much more than they ever thought possible. I don’t look at it as going to work; I believe if you find your passion and can turn it into your work, it is not work.” www.raclarkefitness.com, ruthann@raclarkefitness.com

SHANNON SEGERSTROM hannon Segerstrom is a native Bendite and owner of inMotion Training Studio in Bend. She has been in the fitness industry for over 18 years in many roles. She holds a bachelors in science in health promotion and is a NASM Certified Personal Trainer, Titleist Performance Institute Golf Fitness Instructor, CrossFit Certified, dotFit Nutrition and Supplement Specialist and a NASM Corrective Exercise Instructor. inMotion Training Studio is committed to changing people’s lives by helping them adopt a more healthy and fit lifestyle so they look and feel their best. Their goal is creating a positive and enjoyable training environment to maximize success. The company believes that fitness and wellness should be a part of everyday life and that it improves quality of life. They specialize in weight loss for the general population, nutrition and weight loss challenges, rehabilitation or injury prevention and golf fitness. When Bill Murphy’s gym membership fee doubled his golf pro referred him to Segerstrom. He was immediately impressed by “how reasonable her fee was, how flexible her schedule and her knowledge about the anatomy and muscles.” Murphy said that she gives him a continually changing exercise routine and that he “always feels better after her workout. I am a great fan!” Since so many people have full time jobs, families and other commitments, Segerstrom believes that a personal trainer can help people get back on track. inMotion helps their clients reach goals by “shaking things up to keep your body guessing and helping find creative ways to make exercise a fun part of your life and to constantly get out of your comfort zone,” Segerstrom said. She believes anyone and everyone should have a personal trainer to help with motivation, accountability and safety. “Whether you are an athlete, mom, want to lose 20 to 50 pounds, have injuries or are realizing you aren’t as in shape or have lost balance, there is always a fit for you.” She pointed out that expenses deter many people, but that small studios and group training helps with the costs while achieving great results. Many people join a gym only to lose focus a short while later or find the gym intimidating or boring and repetitive. Jodie Hueske began training with Segerstrom nine years ago in a small workout class for women and continues to train at inMotion. “I love working out at inMotion,” she said. “Circuit training keeps things interesting— you never get bored because you don’t know what’s coming next. And Shannon and her trainers are excellent.” For Segerstrom, the best part of being a personal trainer and owning her facility is, “making a profound impact on our client’s lives. I get to have fun and love what I do. Helping people rid themselves of the ‘old them’ is the best reward a trainer could ask for. It is a joy to share in the lives and journeys of those willing to work hard for what they need.” shannon@inmotionbend.com

MORRI STEWART orri Stewart is an ACE Certified personal trainer and owner of Energize Fitness in Bend. She regularly pursues continued education and attends training seminars to increase her knowledge. She has been involved in the fitness industry for over 25 years and is certified through LeMond RevMaster Group Cycling Advanced Training as a cycling instructor. “My philosophy is that there should never be a dull moment! Let’s make the experience of creating functional, well-maintained bodies, into an experience which makes what used to be ‘work’ in your workout, evolve into fun, invigorating and productive, achievable goals,” Stewart said. Energize Fitness specializes in unique and individual program design to assist clients in making healthy lifestyle choices and living life to the fullest. They believe that endurance, multi-sport and functional training in conjunction with cardiovascular maintenance and balance work establishes a strong and healthy body and mind. Stewart approaches each client as a unique individual and begins with an initial fitness assessment of cardio respiratory, strength, endurance and flexibility. She sets realistic but challenging goals then works closely with clients while maintaining consistent dialogue throughout workouts and in maintaining healthy lifestyle choices. The majority of Stewart’s clients do not go to the gym every day for their workout but instead get their exercise by enjoying the outdoor sports opportunities in Central Oregon. She explains that her job is to “enhance their performance, whether they are climbing a mountain 54 Bend FASHION Quarterly•Winter 2015
or chasing after their grandchildren.” She works toward this goal by providing a full body workout of every muscle group along with balance and a mind-body connection at each workout. A typical session with Stewart at Energize Fitness involves small circuits where she engages clients in both upper body and lower body strength training. She encourages multitasking and functional training by, “working multiple muscle groups to mimic what we do outside of the gym.” Each of her sessions are “based on a foundation of knowledge about each client’s strengths and weaknesses. I assess their short and long term goals when we first meet and revisit those all the time. I do a thorough assessment of their body with strength, flexibility and endurance testing and make note of prior injuries and medication. When necessary, I get permission to contact their doctor if I come across aphysical diagnosis with which I am unfamiliar,” Stewart said. Aileen Hastings is a client at Energize Fitness and says that “Morri is one of the most accepting, patient, motivational and encouraging people I know. She took a challenging situation with me and my physical issues and made the impossible become possible. I have reached my personal, life-long health, wellness and fitness goals. I am forever grateful for being able to train with her and call her my friend.” For 25 years Stewart has made fitness an integral part of her life and says that she gets “so much more from my client’s successes, spirit and friendship than they can ever imagine. And yes, I tell them that!” www.energizewithmorri.com

magine having your own personal chef. Choosing your selection of proteins, carbohydrates and vegetables along with the portions that create your own individual meal. Good food that tastes good and is good for you. And it all starts at just $5.99 a meal. Nourish Meal Prep is founder Meredith Telfer’s dream job. “My inspiration was myself. As a body building competitor I realized how important nourishment is and prepared my own meals and took them to work at the hospital. Other people saw the meals I prepared and wanted me to make some for them...business people wanting to spend time doing other things than preparing healthy meals. “As a single mom I wanted to spend my time with my daugher, taking her to gymnastics, following a busy schedule; I always knew there were containers at home with ready to eat good meals.” After being a partner in a Seattle restaurant, owning a local coffee shop and then losing a job in the healthcare industry due to restructuring, Telfer decided it was time to put a plan in place for preparing

nourishing meals. She opened her kitchen in February of 2015 and has been going strong ever since. A savvy website helps clients select and order their meals and the kitchen facility with ample space for preparation and delivery, is available for customers who want to pick up their meals. Nourish delivers meals all over Bend as well as Seattle, Kirkland, Portland, Eugene and Salem. “I feel like I’m really blessed in Bend that people are healthy and they get it and they want time to play and not spend time cooking nourishing meals,” says Telfer. “I won’t freeze the food, we make it fresh and we send it fresh. I’m really picky about the food. Customers can select from a variety of portions and if they need help with their diet I can refer them to a nutritionist.” Nourish is licensed with the agriculture department and all the food is gluten and peanut free. It’s locally sourced with no added preservatives or salt. Nourish Meal Prep 62080 Dean Swift Rd., Ste. 120, Bend 541-728-3771 www.nourishmealprep.com
How it Works (You can find all of this and more on the website) 1. Select your meals Create custom meals from our meal maker menu, pick from one of our meal programs or do a little of both.
2. Nourish prepares your order Once your order is received we will shop, cook and prep your meals in our gluten-free commercial facility. We shop for the food once the order is placed. This allows us to offer fresh, hand-selected food, eliminating waste and keeping costs down. Next, your food is steamed, grilled, boiled or broiled with no added fat, sugar or heavy sauces to keep it healthy and tasting great. Your food is then weighted, measured and packaged individually for you! 3. Pick-up your order or have it delivered We have designated pick-up/ delivery days.
