renee fang selected works 2020-2021

hello there! My name is Renee Fang and I am currently a second year student at the University of Waterloo School of Architecture. I am an ambitious and dependable person and am always up for new challenges and learning experiences. As a student, I am intrigued in exploring the connections between visual art and human expression, specifically how it shapes the built environment. I’d love to expand my architectural skills through working at a firm and be able to contribute my skills. The following works demonstrates my current achievements as an architecture student and as an artist. I am looking forward to new opportunities, and if you have any inquiries, feel free to contact me anytime! r34fang@uwaterloo.ca +1 (647) 468-6411 Markham, ON

October 7, 2021 To Whom it May Concern: Re: Reference Letter for Renee Fang I write this letter as a reference for Ms. Renee Fang, in my capacity as Co-Founder of Cumming & Partners, a law firm based in Toronto, Ontario. It is my distinct pleasure to recommend Renee as a potential employee. I strongly support her ambition to contribute to, and learn from your team. Renee worked with our firm as a full-time Administrative Assistant in the summer of 2019. I worked directly with Renee and was impressed with her intelligence, her ability to work as part of an effective team and collaborate with others in a high pressure and fast-paced environment. Specifically, Renee provided administrative support to ensure efficient operation of the firm. One of her primary tasks was to take charge of transferring closed client files to an online server to create space and to assist in the firm’s efforts to transition to a paperless office. During her time at Cumming & Partners, Renee was consistently engaged, articulate and open minded, showing her professionalism and strong work ethic, in addition to her willingness to absorb new concepts and further develop her own skill-set. Renee is a fast learner, extremely hard-working and accepts any challenge that arises. At the firm, she demonstrated her ability to complete high quality work while maintaining efficient time management skills, as she completed her tasks well in advance. One of Renee’s most admirable qualities was her generosity, regularly offering assistance to others without being asked. She earned the respect of her colleagues in a very short time, and was well-liked by them as well. Renee has expressed a keen interest in architecture and I believe that the professional experience she gained at Cumming & Partners will serve her well as she embarks upon her career. The Partners at the firm support Renee’s endeavors to become a professional working architect and we have no hesitation recommending her. I am confident that Renee will thrive in the professional workspace and prove herself to be a valuable asset with her enthusiastic nature and strong attention to detail. Should you have any inquiries about Renee, I would be pleased to speak with you at your convenience. For your reference, my cell phone is 917-538-4308 and my email address is igoes@canada-usa.com. Sincerely,

Ian J. Goés Co-Founder Barrister & Solicitor, ON Attorney-at-Law, NY

Situated close to the Distillery District and other notable spaces in Downtown Toronto, this canopy is designed to be an extension of the historic space and a place that offers flexible opportunities for small businesses to bring new life into the community. As both a day and night market, more shading is added to the lower western, lower eastern, and higher southern facades to protect its users from sunset and sunrise glare and to limit summer sun. Accordingly, the more northern extrusions are also higher to let in more sunlight throughout the year. Natural ventilation was also taken into consideration, with larger openings on the northwestern and south-eastern facades and smaller openings to allow for cross-ventilation. To further establish its connection to the distillery district, a southern opening was established as well.

Part of the living history that is Historic Unionville, unit 147A has been transformed into a residence, studio, and art gallery for two local artists who love the unique charm of the town. To maintain the building’s connection to Historic Unionville, the wood design of the facade, choice in cladding, and reuse of the doors was used to make the building consistent with the aesthetics of neighbouring buildings and to pay homage to the building’s former design. By doing this, both the building’s inhabitants and members of the community can feel further connected to each other and the site’s history despite the building’s redesign. Biophilia is also used through the implementation of many plants and creation of a lot of diffuse light in the building’s interior to create a space to be free and creative.

for the kids!

“53 Water Street North in Kitchener is a 16 story apartment block, one of the most typical products of a generation of highdensity housing built in the period following the Second World War. It was among the first towers in downtown Kitchener, one of about half a dozen built between 1958 and 1973.” For the kids! is an environmentally friendly, adaptive-reuse project. The driving force of the design is kids and so all seven units, in addition to the common area, are made to be stimulating and fun. The demographic is families of three to six, with young children. Because children like to roam freely throughout their surroundings, it is important to consider that they will climb, push, pull, and touch all of the furnishings within their reach. As a result, this design includes play platforms, reading areas, and hiding nooks to promote safe play and education. Multi-functional furniture was also incorporated, as it can be used for storage as well as a safe space for young children. In addition to play, for the kids! applies sustainable design strategies as well to help reduce the negative impacts of the construction industry.

Located in Downtown Toronto, Surround Studios combines the traditional function of a traditional library with a music education center. The library portion of the buidling specializes in providing musical education for people of all ages and the studio acts as an outlet to reflect this. This studio library uses both reclaimed/ recycled material and mass timber. The cladding is also recycled brick and mortar, to match the aesthetic of the nearby music buildings. In terms of mass timber, it will be used for columns, partitions, and various furniture installations throughout the interior. The use of mass timber also has biophilic benefits: the exposure to natural elements is known to improve human well-being. The warmth and quality of exposed wood lends itself to the overall design of the room and saves money on additional finishes. The environmental benefit is that wood is a carbon sequestering fuel that is 100 percent renewable and the embodied energy of lightweight building construction, such as timber frames, are typically lower than that of heavyweight construction. Mass timber that is sustainably sourced will help reduce the building’s overall carbon footprint. Additionally, wood is effective at sound absorption in general because it is porous and has a lot of air spaces to absorb sound.
