Internship Report

Year in Review

Executive Summary The Career Center was centralized as a one stop shop for internships and jobs in fall 2016. Since its launch, students from all majors have received career and internship assistance from a dedicated team of advisors. Centralized career services also gave industry representatives a streamlined process for posting internships, jobs and recruiting students at Columbia.

2

Moving forward The Career Center faces some challenges and opportunities:

In the 2017-2018 academic year, the internship program began gaining momentum. In collaboration with the Provost’s Office and Academic Affairs, the internship program transformed from thirtytwo department course-codes into three courses managed by the Career Center and the Business and Entrepreneurship Department. In addition, the Career Center team developed consistent standards for vetting and approving internships, improved the internship site evaluation process, and implemented policies and procedures that ensured approved internships would be valuable career-related experiences.

PARTICIPATION Only 8% of the current student population are participating in academic internships. Given this statistic, the Career Center will be focusing on increasing internships and developing relationships with industry partners who encourage students to participate in academic internships.

AWARENESS Students are likely participating in experiences that would qualify for credit by the College without opting into the internship program. The Career Center staff, along with our partners in Academic Advising will work to increase awareness of the various internship options.

One of the biggest accomplishments over the past two years has been the development of three new course options for students participating in an academic internship. In fall 2017, a three-credit internship course, titled Professionalism and Creativity, was introduced. The class is an online professionalism course that connects the on-site work done at the internship with coursework completed at Columbia. Participating students synthesize their internship experience, connect with a cohort of interns, create and update professional materials and develop a plan to take the next step in their careers.

SUPPORT Assistance is needed from faculty and college partners to encourage students to participate in internships for credit and connect to the Career Center.

TRENDS 75% of internships are unpaid. Promoting paid internships to students and encouraging industry partners to pay their interns will be a priority for the Career Center.

In addition, a one-credit internship course was developed to allow undergraduates to fit an academic internship into their schedule that would be tracked and supported by the Career Center staff. For full-time students enrolled in less than sixteen credits, this is a perfect option to maximize the value of their tuition.

SCHOLARSHIP FUNDS The high percentage of unpaid internships shows the critical need to expand the Columbia Internship Award, and the value it can bring to students. Increasing the funding and awareness of the scholarship would help serve more students.

The zero-credit course is similar to the one-credit course in that it adds the internship experience to the student’s transcript and is graded as a pass/fail course. This course is available to all undergraduate, graduate, and international students. The course is completely tuition-free and does not add any additional costs to the student. This is an attractive option for international students and students participating in a summer internship, who would not have taken their internship for credit previously due to the cost of tuition.

Even with the above challenges ahead of us, the Career Center staff is a professional and hardworking team poised to meet the challenges head-on and ensure that Columbia students are career ready upon graduation. By building and maintaining a strong and successful internship program, we will continue to help our students build solid career paths for their future and enhance the reputation of Columbia in the creative and media arts industries.

In the 2017-2018 academic year, there were 693 internships with 599 unique students participating. This is an 18% increase (587 internships) from the 20162017 academic year. While this growth is encouraging, we still have a steep hill to climb to increase participation in the internship program to ensure students get the most out of their Columbia education.
