The Mission of

RENEW International RENEW International fosters spiritual renewal in the Catholic tradition by empowering individuals and communities to encounter God in everyday life, deepen and share faith, and connect faith with action.

Welcome Dear Friends of RENEW, Welcome to our 14th annual RENEW gala! According to a Swahili proverb from Eastern Africa, Life is the best gift; the rest is extra . Central to the African worldview and to the Gospel is the value of life itself. Tonight we celebrate the gift of life that we find in Christ through our Catholic faith community in the United States, in Africa, and throughout the globe. Tonight we honor three individuals—Mike Catanzaro, Lisa Meehan, and Fr. Joe Healey—who give witness to their faith in their families, parishes, workplaces, and small communities for the sake of the Church and the world. We are grateful that they said yes to our invitation to be honored for their commitment to Christ demonstrated by their faith-based actions in service to others, especially those who are poor or otherwise in need. In the name of our Board of Trustees and RENEW’s staff I thank each of you who contributed generously to this gala event for the support of our ministry, especially enabling us to serve all parishes who desire to renew faith and build the Church, regardless of their economic situation. Your contribution makes it possible for us to fulfill our mission not only in the inner-city and rural areas of the United States but also in the developing world, notably in Latin America and Africa. Thanks to your donation we are able to continue to create new and innovative pastoral programs that meet the needs of today’s Church. With gratitude and warmest regards,

President’s Award Michael Catanzaro Michael J. Catanzaro was raised in Hudson County, New Jersey, and now lives with his wife, Nellie, in Milltown, New Jersey. They are members of Our Lady of Lourdes Church, where Michael served as a lector for many years. Michael is a retired executive from the Bank of New York where he was vice president of the Personal Trust Division, specializing in the administration of trusts and estates and the development of new business. In 1980, he was elected to the Board of Directors of the George Link Jr. Foundation, where he served as vice president and secretary. In addition, since 1999, he has been a controlling trustee, secretary, and treasurer of the George Link Jr. Charitable Trust. He has served on the boards of trustees of the Turner Company, Naples, Florida; St. Peter’s Preparatory School, Jersey City; the Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Foundation; and the Garden State Arts Center Foundation. He has been a consultant to the Charles Lawrence Keith and Clara Miller Foundation, and a member of the advisory boards of the Veterans Corporation, Alexandria, Virginia, and Changing Our World, Inc., in New York City. Michael is a graduate of St. Peter’s College, Jersey City. His post-graduate studies were at New York University and Seton Hall University. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, 1951-1953. Michael said he is “astonished” and “delighted” to receive the President’s Award from RENEW International. He said he is happy he can contribute to RENEW’s mission because he is concerned about bringing more Catholics, particularly in the United States, back to the Church.

Concerning her selection to receive the Spirit of RENEW Award, Lisa said, “It’s humbling… It is also inspiring: it makes me see the importance of doing service and the impact it has. “Being honored by RENEW makes you see your Christian faith through new lenses… It makes me think about other ways to share faith and love. “I feel blessed; I have a lot to be thankful for. I realize I’m a steward of these blessings. I need to use them to bring about positive change.” Lisa lives in Solebury, Pennsylvania, with her husband, Grey, their nine-yearold daughter, and two dogs.
