Welcome Dear Friends of RENEW, Welcome to the 18th annual RENEW gala! Each year this event brings together men and women who support RENEW’s mission to help parishes become beacons of welcome to all people and centers of missionary activity that reaches far beyond the church grounds. The gala is our largest fundraiser of the year. It is the key to our ability to serve parishes and individual Catholic men and women, no matter their financial status. Your contribution to this gala, as well as your support throughout the year, means that RENEW can reach urban and rural areas throughout the United States, parishes in developing countries in Africa and Latin America, and Catholic communities on military bases at home and abroad. It also allows us to develop innovative pastoral resources for small faith-sharing groups, in multiple languages, using print and digital formats that are accessible to all. Tonight we honor four dedicated Catholics—Dave and Sue Janazzo from New Providence, NJ; Tony Coelho from Doylestown, PA and Msgr. Ed Ciuba from Upper Saddle River, NJ—for the commitment to the faith that they demonstrate through service to others. Each of them in his or her own unique way has made the world a better place. On behalf of RENEW’s Board of Trustees and staff, thank you for your generosity. It is because of you that we can bring new energy and zeal to rebuilding the Church. May God bless you and your families abundantly! With gratitude and warmest regards,

Sr. Theresa Rickard, O.P. President and Executive Director

Spirit of RENEW Award Sue and Dave Janazzo

Both Sue and Dave Janazzo come from loving, faithful ItalianAmerican families. Sue was raised in Hazlet, NJ. and Dave in Forestville, Conn. As Sue says, “The two of us, growing up, lived parallel lives about 100 miles apart.” Dave and Sue (Valesi) married in 1990, having met in Monmouth County where Dave was an engineer at Bell Labs and Sue was a hairdresser. Early on in their marriage, they came to see and value the importance of parish life to their family and their own spirituality. Today, the Janazzos are seriously engaged members of Our Lady of Peace Parish in New Providence, NJ. The Eucharist holds a special prominence for them. Both Sue and Dave are lectors ad Eucharistic ministers to the homebound. Sue is an altar server, cooks for a local rectory, and has at times cooked for the Dominican Nuns Cloister in Summit, NJ. Dave is involved with The Academy of Our Lady of Peace (preschool through grade 8) and is past grand knight of Knights of Columbus Council 783. At Our Lady of Peace Parish he is currently the coordinator of the RENEW process, Be My Witness: Formation for the New Evangelization . He is also coordinating RENEW’s pilgrimage to Italy, which will take place in 2018 as RENEW celebrates 40 years of ministry throughout the world. Dave worked as an engineer at AT&T for about 15 years, then as an analyst at Merrill Lynch, and he now works in corporate finance in New York. Sue is a “professional” volunteer, having served in many capacities over the years—in schools, the community, and church. A woman of strong faith, her generous gifts of time and talent set a fine example for her family and for others. Dave and Sue are proud of their daughters, Nicole, a graduate of DeSales University, and Samantha, a graduate of The Catholic University of America. Both daughters are involved in parish youth ministry, World Youth Day, and other volunteer opportunities. As a family, the Janazzos enjoy wine, entertaining, and travel. They have taken several trips throughout Italy, Sicily, and Malta. Samantha studied in Italy for one year, which resulted in a memorable family pilgrimage to Rome, Assisi, Siena, Florence, Venice, and Milan. Sue and Dave can often be found on the golf course in search of the perfect swing.

President’s Award Tony Coelho

Anthony Lee (Tony) Coelho was born in Los Banos, California. His parents, Otto and Alice Branco Coelho, were children of Portuguese immigrants. Tony attended public schools and graduated from Loyola University in Los Angeles in 1964. After President John F. Kennedy was assassinated, Tony abandoned his plan to study law, believing that the priesthood encapsulated Kennedy’s vision of public service. But he learned on his 22nd birthday that blackouts he had been experiencing were caused by epilepsy. At the time, epileptics were barred from the priesthood. A Jesuit acquaintance introduced Tony to Bob Hope, for whom Tony did odd jobs. Hope suggested, “It’s obvious that you have this burn to help people. If that’s your bag, why don’t you go work for a member of Congress?” Tony sent his résumé and a letter of introduction to his hometown’s representative, Bernie Sisk, and soon began working as a staffer, handling agriculture policy. In June 1967, he married Phyllis Butler, a legislative aide. The couple raised two daughters, Nicole and Kristen. Tony worked in Sisk’s office for 14 years and in 1978, when Sisk announced his retirement, he had already chosen Tony to run as his successor. Tony’s opponent described him as “a very sick man” and asked during a campaign speech, “What would you think if Coelho went to the White House to argue a critical issue for you and he had a seizure?” Asked by the press for a response, Tony quipped, “A lot of people have gone to the White House and had fits. At least I’d have an excuse.” Tony won the election, 60 to 40 percent. According to the Los Angeles Times, Tony was the first Portuguese-American to serve in Congress. The most significant legislation Tony sponsored was the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 which provides a national mandate to end discrimination against individuals with disabilities.Tony’s passion for this legislation stemmed from his own experience and from witnessing discrimination against other epileptics. The act was signed into law in July 1990. On June 15, 1989, his 47th birthday, Tony delivered his farewell address to the House. He led the American mission to the 1998 Exposition in Lisbon, Portugal and served as chairman of the Board of Directors of the Epilepsy Foundation. Tony speaks of his “ministry in public service.” “When I left Congress,” he has said, “I did not leave ministry.” He continues to counsel young people with disabilities who are at risk of suicide; he serves on many boards; and, most recently, he created The Center for Persons with Disabilities at Loyola Marymount in Los Angeles. “I believe that if you impact one life you will be blessed,” he has said. “I have lived by this principle, and I know it to be true.”

Msgr. Thomas A. Kleissler Award Msgr. Ed Ciuba

A love of priesthood, respect for the people to whom he ministers, a life immersed in Sacred Scripture, an interest in learning, and a passion for Mother Earth, are all earmarks of the spirituality of Msgr. Edward Ciuba, who prefers to be called “Father Ed.

A native of Elizabeth, NJ, Father Ed attended Don Bosco Prep in Ramsey, NJ., before entering the seminary at Darlington. He was sent for his priestly formation to the North American College in Rome and was ordained in 1959. He then received a licentiate in sacred theology from the Gregorian University in Rome. After a year as a parish priest at St. Ann’s Church in Jersey City, he returned to Rome and earned a licentiate in Sacred Scripture from the Pontifical Biblical Institute. He completed a final year of study at the Ecole Biblique in Jerusalem (1963). For twenty-two years, Father Ed was a professor and then rector of Immaculate Conception Seminary (Darlington). He administered the seminary move to the campus of Seton Hall University in South Orange in 1985-86. As a young professor, his weekend assignment was Our Lady of Mercy Parish, Park Ridge, where he met Fr. Tom Kleissler, co-founder of RENEW. Fr. Tom asked him to attend a Cursillo weekend with four laymen from the parish. “This experience changed my life and vision of Church, God, and the important role of lay people in the Church,” says Fr. Ed. Over time, Fr. Ed became more aware of the progress being made by science in relation to the origins of the universe and the inter-connectedness of creation. Fr. Ed’s concern was not only how to understand science but, also how to credibly present the Scriptures, especially the biblical accounts of creation, in the light of new scientific discoveries. Assignment as pastor of Notre Dame Parish in North Caldwell, NJ after twenty-two years of seminary teaching offered Fr. Ed the opportunity to make the fruits of his studies relevant to his parishioners. Small faith-sharing groups provided ideal contexts for discussion of important topics such as the relationship of religion and science; the sacredness of Mother Earth; the importance of contemplation, and a broadened understanding of the Eucharist in light of the inter-connectedness of creation. After twenty-two years, Fr. Ed retired and moved to Presentation Parish in Upper Saddle River where he is an integral part of parish life. He is an active member of the St. Francis Ministry, which focuses on the environment, and he meets weekly with the Men’s 6 a.m. Prayer Group. In 2016, Father Ed wrote RENEW’S faith-sharing book entitled Creation at the Crossroads: A Small-Group Resource on Pope Francis’ Laudato Si’ ( On Care for Our Common Home ). He offers talks and workshops on the environment and Creation at the Crossroads . Sought after as a speaker on topics related to the Scriptures and Christian discipleship, this retired priest is not retired in the traditional sense, but is truly re-cycled and ever ready to proclaim the Good News.
