Thomas J. Quinlan, I I I

Welcome Dear Friends of RENEW: Welcome to our 40th anniversary gala! Each year our gala brings together people who support RENEW’s mission. This anniversary gala is especially significant: it is an opportunity to celebrate all that we have accomplished in 40 years and to look forward to the impact we can have in the years to come. RENEW International has successfully transformed Catholic parishes and motivated Catholic men and women throughout the world to connect faith and life. By supporting this gala, you enable us to continue our mission in new and innovative ways. This year your participation will help us to launch a baptism-parent preparation program—the first in a new series of programs—aimed at engaging young adults and young families in the Catholic faith. Tonight, we honor five dedicated Catholics who demonstrate commitment to their faith through their service to the Church and world: Les Quick, Tom Quinlan, Sr. Suzanne Golas, Sr. Donna Ciangio and Catherine Martin. Our honorees strive to live their faith in their everyday lives—with their families, in the workplace and the broader community. We have much to celebrate: our own history, a promising future, the exemplary lives of our honorees, and your support. Thank you for your generosity. May God bless you and your families abundantly! With gratitude and warmest regards,

Sr. Theresa Rickard, O.P. President and Executive Director

Thomas Quinlan, III

Les Quick co-founded Massey Quick (now Massey Quick Simon) in 2004. He began his career in 1975 as the fourth employee of Quick and Reilly Inc., the first New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) member to offer discount stock brokerage to the investing public. During his 28 years with the firm, Les had many roles and was a key member of the management team that built the firm’s branch network. He also was the company liaison in 1983 when it went public and became listed on the New York Stock Exchange. Charitable giving plays a big role in Mr. Quick’s life. Currently, he is Chairman of the Board for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Hudson, Essex and Union Counties. He also serves on the boards of the Bishop’s Finance Council for the Diocese of Metuchen and the Finance Council for Our Lady of Perpetual Help. “It’s important to give back,” Les says. Les lives in Bernardsville, NJ with his wife, Eileen. They have four adult children (Christopher and Elizabeth, Ryan, Kelsey, and Maura).

Thomas Quinlan is the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of LSC Communications, a global leader in traditional and digital print, printrelated services and office products that serves the needs of publishers, merchandisers and retailers, with over 20,000 employees with operations in Europe, Canada and Mexico. Tom is active in supporting organizations that focus on literacy, health and development and is a Director for the National Merit Scholarship Corporation and on the Board of Trustees for Pace University. In 2011, Mr. Quinlan received AJC’s National Human Relations Award, which honors professional and philanthropic leadership. Mr. Quinlan holds an MBA in Finance from St. John’s University, which recognized him with its Outstanding Alumni Achievement Medal in 2010, and a Bachelor of Science in Finance and Business Administration from Pace University, which conferred upon him an Honorary Doctorate in Commercial Science and presented him with its 46th Leaders in Management Award in 2009.

Msgr. Thomas A. Kleissler Award Sister Donna Ciangio, OP Sr. Donna Ciangio is all about helping organizations work better—especially if the organization is a Catholic parish. Donna is director of Church Leadership Consultation, which promotes parish vitality and pastoral direction, leadership development, and faith formation. While at RENEW, Donna worked in nearly 100 dioceses in the United States and other countries, including Canada, Scotland, England, Ireland, Cameroon, South Africa, Sri Lanka, El Salvador, India, and the Philippines. Donna also serves on the Board of Trustees of Caldwell University and the Center for Ministry Development and is chairperson of the North American Forum for Small Christian Communities. Donna served at RENEW from 1981 to 1993.

Catherine Martin, Ph.D. Catherine Martin is a retired professor of theology at the College of St. Elizabeth, Morristown, New Jersey. She is an educator, author, and presenter on theology and spirituality. An experienced administrator in religious and educational institutions, Cathy has a passion for parish ministry. After her time at RENEW, she married and then ministered at St. Raphael Parish, Livingston, New Jersey, for over twenty years before going into full-time college academic life. Over the past thirty-five years, she has facilitated discernment processes for church groups and other organizations throughout New Jersey. She also has traveled to several dioceses as a certified trainer of pastoral leaders for the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Building Intercultural Competencies program. Her current key interests are circus spirituality and small faith communities. Cathy was RENEW’s original co-director from 1978 to 1981.

Sister Suzanne Golas, CSJP Sr. Suzanne Golas was the first paid employee of RENEW and championed the social justice efforts of the original RENEW process. Suzanne has served in leadership of her congregation and is an NGO (non-governmental organization) representative at the United Nations. She is the “founding mother” of WATERSPIRIT, an ecology and spirituality ministry that helps people deepen their consciousness of the sacredness and interdependence of all creation with a focus on the role of water as critical in sustaining life. She continues to serve as its director. Suzanne was at RENEW from 1978 to 1980.

RE NE W International ’s Co-founders

Msgr. Thomas A. Kleissler and Msgr. Thomas P. Ivory “The wind blows where it wills,” Jesus says in the Gospel of John, “and you hear the sound of it, but you do not know whence it comes or whither it goes; so it is with every one who is born of the Spirit.” That imagery certainly applies to the beginnings of RENEW International, and to the two priests who founded the ministry in the afterglow of the Second Vatican Council—Monsignors Thomas A. Kleissler and Thomas Ivory. Neither of those young priests set out to establish a ministry that would touch thousands of Catholic men, women, and children around the globe. But things happened. The first thing was that the archbishop of Newark, Most Rev. Peter Gerety, asked Father Kleissler— three times—if he would take on the responsibility of establishing a diocesan office for parishcouncil development. In response to the third request, Father Kleissler proposed that the archbishop instead should consider a three-year archdiocese-wide plan of formation that would enable lay people to take on the ministries and responsibilities that the Vatican Council had called for. Archbishop Gerety did not hestitate, and the result was the Office of Pastoral Renewal with Father Kleisser at the helm. In 1976, as this office was about the business of establishing parish councils and launching the renewal process in 250 parishes, Father Kleissler compared notes with Father Ivory, who was director of the archdiocesan Office of Religious Education. The priests found that they shared the dream of a program for the whole archdiocese to renew the Church by forming lay people in leadership and inspiring a spiritual awakening in whole parishes. Fathers Kleissler and Ivory and a team of volunteers transformed this dream into the process to be known as RENEW whose goals were to teach and witness to the Word of God, develop and build small faith-sharing communities, and to form lay Catholics in social justice and Gospel-based action. Under Father Kleissler’s direct supervision the original five-season RENEW process impacted most of the parishes in Newark and quickly spread not only beyond the archdiocese but far beyond the United States.

Monsignors Kleissler and Ivory were presented

Forty years and dozens of faith-sharing programs with Apostolic Blessings by Newark Archbishop later, the dream shared by two young priests Cardinal Joseph Tobin at RENEW’s Symposium on continues to touch hearts and souls around Parish Renewal named in their honor. The Cardinal also presented each of them with a framed letter of the world.
